Elle rejoignit sainte Claire au couvent de saint Damien à Assise. Elle lui succéda, en donnant l’exemple d’une constante régularité et d’une stricte pauvreté.

Prière d’ouverture
Donne à ta famille, Seigneur, de progresser en faisant toujours ce qui est bon ; assure-lui le nécessaire en cette vie pour la conduire aux biens du Royaume. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Jr 18, 18-20
Mes ennemis ont dit : « Allons, montons un complot contre Jérémie. La loi ne va pas disparaître par manque de prêtre, ni le conseil, par manque de sage, ni la parole, par manque de prophète. Allons, attaquons-le par notre langue, ne faisons pas attention à toutes ses paroles. » Mais toi, Seigneur, fais attention à moi, écoute ce que disent mes adversaires. Comment peut-on rendre le mal pour le bien ? Ils ont creusé une fosse pour me perdre. Souviens-toi que je me suis tenu en ta présence pour te parler en leur faveur, pour détourner d’eux ta colère.

Évangile : Mt 20, 17-28

Le Fils de l’homme sera livré aux grands prêtres et aux scribes, ils le condamneront à mort et le livreront aux nations païennes pour qu’elles se moquent de lui, le flagellent et le crucifient ; le troisième jour, il ressuscitera. » Alors la mère des fils de Zébédée s’approcha de Jésus avec ses fils Jacques et Jean, et elle se prosterna pour lui faire une demande. Jésus lui dit : « Que veux-tu ? » Elle répondit : « Ordonne que mes deux fils que voici siègent, l’un à ta droite et l’autre à ta gauche, dans ton Royaume. » Jésus répondit : « Vous ne savez pas ce que vous demandez. Pouvez-vous boire la coupe que je vais boire ? » Ils lui disent : « Nous le pouvons. » Il leur dit : « Ma coupe, vous la boirez ; quant à siéger à ma droite et à ma gauche, ce n’est pas à moi de l’accorder ; il y a ceux pour qui cela est préparé par mon Père. » Les dix autres, qui avaient entendu, s’indignèrent contre les deux frères. Jésus les appela et dit : « Vous le savez : les chefs des nations les commandent en maîtres, et les grands font sentir leur pouvoir. Regarde avec bonté, Seigneur, les dons que nous te présentons; et par ceux que tu nous feras en échange, dégage-nous de nos péchés pour nous rendre libres en toi. Par Jésus.

Prière après la communion
Dans cette communion, Seigneur, tu as voulu nous donner un gage de notre immortalité : permets donc qu’elle nous ouvre les portes de ton Royaume. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Les honneurs et les premières places, voilà ce que Jésus reproche aux scribes et aux pharisiens. Toutefois, la famille Zébédée est lente à comprendre ces observations et veut la première place dans son Royaume. Certes, elle est prête à porter sa croix ; mais Jésus l’invite à éviter les premières places et à se centrer sur l’essentiel. Imiter ce que dans quelques jours lui-même va poser comme acte nouveau et essentiel qui montre la voie qui fera de nous des fils de Dieu et ses disciples. Dans ce sens, Il invite tout chrétien à se laisser séduire par la marque du Disciple : la croix. C’est par elle que le chrétien arrivera à vivre une relation sincère et véritable avec les autres ; non pas comme les chefs des nations, mais dans l’humilité, le service et le don de sa vie pour les autres. Que jamais la Croix du Christ ne s’éloigne de nous et de notre vie !

Meditation
The request made on behalf of James and John reflects the depth of fallen human state, wherein the greatest good appears to be that which serves the self, that is, honour, position, glory, and prestige. It is the perception that dominates the pagan world and its powerful rulers and seems to be dominating our Christian community today. The kingdom brought by Jesus defines greatness in an entirely opposite way, in terms of servanthood. This way is foreign to the world and to our human nature. Yet it is the way of Jesus, and it is, thus, the way of His disciples. The disciples are to be marked by the humility, servanthood, and obedience to death that characterised Jesus, in the knowledge that to suffer with Him may mean to drink the cup that He drank before ultimately reigning with Him. Proper Christian ethics is summarised by “to serve is to reign” (servire est regnare).

Meditation
Jesus faults the scribes and Pharisees particularly for their desire to impress others and their love of prestige and position. Such dangers also threaten Christians and Jesus warns us. Christians are to avoid titles that set them apart from, and above, others in the community of faith, not because the titles are unacceptable, but because of the assumption of superiority and elitism that so often go with them. The conduct of a Christian is to be characterised by the virtues of service and humility. Christians of every era and circumstance, especially those in leadership, must learn that true greatness consists in service and that self-humbling is the path to exaltation. Only by such a radical departure from the values and priorities of the world will Christians in authority be the disciples of the one Teacher and Lord.

Prière d’ouverture
Accorde à tes fidèles, Seigneur, de s’appliquer de toute leur âme à la préparation de pâques : que le renoncement imposé à notre corps porte en chacun de nous des fruits spirituels. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Ez 18, 21-28
Ainsi parle le Seigneur Dieu: Si le méchant se détourne de tous les péchés qu’il a commis, s’il observe tous mes décrets, s’il pratique le droit et la justice, c’est certain, il vivra, il ne mourra pas. On ne se souviendra d’aucun des crimes qu’il a commis, il vivra à cause de la justice qu’il a pratiquée. Prendrais- je donc plaisir à la mort du méchant – oracle du Seigneur Dieu –, et non pas plutôt à ce qu’il se détourne de sa conduite et qu’il vive ? Mais le juste, s’il se détourne de sa justice et fait le mal en imitant toutes les abominations du méchant, il le ferait et il vivrait ? Toute la justice qu’il avait pratiquée, on ne s’en souviendra plus : à cause de son infidélité et de son péché, il mourra! Et pourtant vous dites: « La conduite du Seigneur n’est pas la bonne. » Écoutez donc, fils d’Israël : est-ce ma conduite qui n’est pas la bonne ? N’est-ce pas plutôt la vôtre ? Si le juste se détourne de sa justice, commet le mal, et meurt dans cet état, c’est à cause de son mal qu’il mourra. Si le méchant se détourne de sa méchanceté pour pratiquer le droit et la justice, il sauvera sa vie. Il a ouvert les yeux et s’est détourné de ses crimes. C’est certain, il vivra, il ne mourra pas.

Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens: Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre, et si quelqu’un commet un meurtre, il devra passer en jugement. Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis: Tout homme qui se met en colère contre son frère devra passer en jugement. Si quelqu’un insulte son frère, il devra passer devant le tribunal. Si quelqu’un le traite de fou, il sera passible de la géhenne de feu. Donc, lorsque tu vas présenter ton offrande à l’autel, si, là, tu te souviens que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi, laisse ton offrande, là, devant l’autel, va d’abord te réconcilier avec ton frère, et ensuite viens présenter ton offrande. Mets-toi vite d’accord avec ton adversaire pendant que tu es en chemin avec lui, pour éviter que ton adversaire ne te livre au juge, le juge au garde, et qu’on ne te jette en prison. Amen, je te le dis : tu n’en sortiras pas avant d’avoir payé jusqu’au dernier sou. »

De ce repas dont tu nous as nourris, Seigneur, nous attendons un renouveau : qu’il arrache nos cœurs à leur vieillissement pour nous faire communier au mystère du salut. Par Jésus.
Méditation
« Prendrais- je donc plaisir à la mort du méchant – oracle du Seigneur Dieu –, et non pas plutôt à ce qu’il se détourne de sa conduite et qu’il vive ? ». Le peuple de Dieu se trouve en exil suite à sa déportation à Babylone par les armées de Nabuchodonosor en 597 avant Jésus-Christ. Cette situation amène la question du mal subi par l’homme et de savoir qui en est l’auteur ! Dieu serait-il auteur de nos malheurs ou encore Dieu punit-il le méchant et récompense le juste ? En effet, Dieu rappelle qu’il ne prend pas plaisir à la mort du méchant mais il veut qu’il se convertisse et qu’il vive. Dieu nous aime toujours au-delà de nos égarements. Tout comme Israël qui affirme que la conduite du Seigneur est étrange, nous aussi, au milieu de nos épreuves, nous avons souvent tendance à faire un procès à Dieu en des termes du genre : qu’ai-je fait Seigneur pour mériter ce sort ? Ou encore Seigneur pourquoi c’est à moi que tout cela arrive ? Sachons toujours garder confiance en Dieu et revenons à Lui car il nous attend sans cesse.

He was born near Clonenagh, Ireland. He was first a hermit and later joined the monastery of Tallaght. He was a co-author of a martyrology written in 790. He died on 11 March 824.

First reading : Ezekiel 18:21-28

Am I likely to take pleasure in the death of a wicked man – it is the Lord who speaks – and not prefer to see him renounce his wickedness and live? ‘But if the upright man renounces his integrity, commits sin, copies the wicked man and practises every kind of filth, is he to live? All the integrity he has practised shall be forgotten from then on; but this is because he himself has broken faith and committed sin, and for this he shall die. But you object, “What the Lord does is unjust.” Listen, you House of Israel: is what I do unjust? Is it not what you do that is unjust? When the upright man renounces his integrity to commit sin and dies because of this, he dies because of the evil that he himself has committed. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are still on the way to the court with him, or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. I tell you solemnly, you will not get out till you have paid the last penny.’

Meditation
Christian life requires much more than external conformity to regulations. This is why a person is held accountable for his/her angry thoughts, not merely for external acts of violence against others. Therefore, Jesus calls us to a wholehearted trust and obedience to the heavenly Father that radiates God’s love to the world. Jesus penetrates to the spirit of the commandment. Since the spring of a person’s conduct is the heart, or inner person, the transforming power of the kingdom must be especially experienced there. The worship and service of God cannot be performed as long as anger infects the soul. Thus, the recipient of the grace of the kingdom is one who initiates and seeks reconciliation, both with members of the Christian community and with adversaries.
