St. Antony, Abbot
(251 – 356)
St Antony is the originator of the monastic life. He was born in Egypt: when his parents died, he listened to the words of the Gospel and gave all his belongings to the poor. He lived to be over a hundred years old, and died in 356.
Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Ps 91: 13-14
The just will flourish like the palm tree, and grow like a Lebanon cedar, planted in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God.
Collect
O God, who brought the Abbot Saint Anthony to serve you by a wondrous way of life in the desert, grant, through his intercession, that, denying ourselves, we may always love you above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 1 Samuel 15:16-23
Samuel said to Saul, ‘Stop! Let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.’ Saul said, ‘Tell me.’ Samuel continued, ‘Small as you may be in your own eyes, are you not head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord has anointed you king over Israel. The Lord sent you on a mission and said to you, “Go, put these sinners, the Amalekites, under the ban and make war on them until they are exterminated.” Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you fall on the booty and do what is displeasing to the Lord?’ Saul replied to Samuel, ‘But I did obey the voice of the Lord. I went on the mission which the Lord gave me; I brought back Agag king of the Amalekites; I put the Amalekites under the ban. From the booty the people took the best sheep and oxen of what was under the ban to sacrifice them to the Lord your God in Gilgal.’ But Samuel replied: ‘Is the pleasure of the Lord in holocausts and sacrifices or in obedience to the voice of the Lord? Yes, obedience is better than sacrifice, submissiveness better than the fat of rams. Rebellion is a sin of sorcery, presumption a crime of teraphim. ‘Since you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.’

R/ I will show God’s salvation to the upright.
1. ‘I find no fault with your sacrifices, your offerings are always before me. I do not ask more bullocks from your farms, nor goats from among your herds.
2. ‘But how can you recite my commandments and take my covenant on your lips, you who despise my law and throw my words to the winds,
3. ‘You do this, and should I keep silence? Do you think that I am like you? A sacrifice of thanksgiving honours me and I will show God’s salvation to the upright.’

Gospel : Mark 2:18-22
One day when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and said to him, ‘Why is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’ Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom’s attendants would never think of fasting while the bridegroom is still with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they could not think of fasting. But the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them, and then, on that day, they will fast. No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak; if he does, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse. And nobody puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins too. No! New wine, fresh skins!’
Prayer over the Offerings
May these offerings of our service, placed on your altar in commemoration of Saint Anthony, be acceptable to you, O Lord, we pray, and grant that, released from earthly attachments, we may have our riches in you alone. Through Christ our Lord.

If you would be perfect, go, sell what you have, give to the poor, and follow me, says the Lord.
Prayer after Communion
Nourished for our healing by your Sacraments, O Lord, may we escape every snare of the enemy unharmed, just as by your grace Saint Anthony won glorious victories over the powers of darkness. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
While John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, the disciples of Jesus are accused of not fasting. Bothered about the situation, some people bring it to Jesus. Using the imagery of the wedding feast, Jesus defends the conduct of His disciples. While these remain two different ways of practicing religion, the motive for fasting or not fasting remains a key question. The time would come when His disciples, too, will fast. At times we can be quick to evaluate others and make allusions regarding their conducts. It is important to hear them and make an effort to see reality from their standpoint as well.

1ère lecture : Is 62, 1-5
Pour la cause de Sion, je ne me tairai pas, et pour Jérusalem, je n’aurai de cesse que sa justice ne paraisse dans la clarté, et son salut comme une torche qui brûle. Et les nations verront ta justice ; tous les rois verront ta gloire. On te nommera d’un nom nouveau que la bouche du Seigneur dictera. Tu seras une couronne brillante dans la main du Seigneur, un diadème royal entre les doigts de ton Dieu. On ne te dira plus : « Délaissée ! » À ton pays, nul ne dira : « Désolation ! » Toi, tu seras appelée « Ma Préférence », cette terre se nommera « L’Épousée ». 2ème lecture : 1 Co 12, 4-11
Frères, les dons de la grâce sont variés, mais c’est le même Esprit. Les services sont variés, mais c’est le même Seigneur. Les activités sont variées, mais c’est le même Dieu qui agit en tout et en tous. À chacun est donnée la manifestation de l’Esprit en vue du bien. À celui-ci est donnée, par l’Esprit, une parole de sagesse ; à un autre, une parole de connaissance, selon le même Esprit ; un autre reçoit, dans le même Esprit, un don de foi ; un autre encore, dans l’unique Esprit, des dons de guérison ; à un autre est donné d’opérer des miracles, à un autre de prophétiser, à un autre de discerner les inspirations ; à l’un, de parler diverses langues mystérieuses ; à l’autre, de les interpréter. Mais celui qui agit en tout cela, c’est l’unique et même Esprit : il distribue ses dons, comme il le veut, à chacun en particulier.

Évangile : Jn 2, 1-11
En ce temps-là, il y eut un mariage à Cana de Galilée. La mère de Jésus était là. Jésus aussi avait été invité au mariage avec ses disciples. Or, on manqua de vin. La mère de Jésus lui dit : « Ils n’ont pas de vin. » Jésus lui répond : « Femme, que me veux-tu ? Mon heure n’est pas encore venue. » Sa mère dit à ceux qui servaient : « Tout ce qu’il vous dira, faites-le. » Or, il y avait là six jarres de pierre pour les purifications rituelles des Juifs ; chacune contenait deux à trois mesures, (c’est-à-dire environ cent litres). Jésus dit à ceux qui servaient : « Remplissez d’eau les jarres. » Et ils les remplirent jusqu’au bord. Il leur dit : « Maintenant, puisez, et portez-en au maître du repas. » Ils lui en portèrent. Et celui-ci goûta l’eau changée en vin. Il ne savait pas d’où venait ce vin, mais ceux qui servaient le savaient bien, eux qui avaient puisé l’eau. Alors le maître du repas appelle le marié et lui dit : « Tout le monde sert le bon vin en premier et, lorsque les gens ont bien bu, on apporte le moins bon. Mais toi, tu as gardé le bon vin jusqu’à maintenant. » Tel fut le commencement des signes que Jésus accomplit. C’était à Cana de Galilée. Il manifesta sa gloire, et ses disciples crurent en lui.
Prière sur les offrandes
Seigneur, accorde-nous la grâce de vraiment participer à cette eucharistie; Car chaque fois qu’est célébré ce sacrifice en mémorial, c’est l’ouvre de notre Rédemption qui s’accomplit. Par Jésus.

Pour moi, Seigneur, tu as dressé la table, et ma coupe me remplit de joie.
Prière après la communion
Pénètre-nous, Seigneur, de ton esprit de charité, Afin que soient unis par ton amour ceux que tu as nourris d’un même pain. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Le « bon vin gardé jusqu’à maintenant » que donne Jésus à Cana, pour la joie de tous, ne serait-ce pas l’unité des chrétiens ? Ce signe du début du ministère de Jésus rejoint celui qu’il donnera avant sa passion : « Qu’ils soient un afin que le monde croie que tu m’as envoyé. » L’amour fait l’unité dans la diversité. En changeant l’eau en vin, Jésus substitue à l’ancienne alliance devenue caduque le nectar de l’alliance nouvelle répandue dans le cœur des amoureux. Cette alliance qu’il scelle dans son sang, lorsqu’est venue l’heure de la croix. Avec à nouveau la présence de sa mère Marie, qui s’efface à Cana, et qui, au Calvaire, recueille Jean, le prototype du disciple à venir.
Ainsi Dieu en son Fils manifeste-t-il sa gloire, épiphanie lumineuse d’une union inaltérable. Dieu est Dieu, l’homme reste l’homme. Différents, mais complémentaires, puisque le Seigneur a voulu « avoir besoin » de l’humanité pour exprimer l’ampleur de son amour. C’est désormais l’Église que le Christ épouse en un lien indéfectible. Cette Église qu’il désire une, unifiée dans la diversité.

Second reading : 1 Corinthians 12:4-11
There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit; there are all sorts of service to be done, but always to the same Lord; working in all sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same God who is working in all of them. The particular way in which the Spirit is given to each person is for a good purpose. One may have the gift of preaching with wisdom given him by the Spirit; another may have the gift of preaching instruction given him by the same Spirit; and another the gift of faith given by the same Spirit; another again the gift of healing, through this one Spirit; one, the power of miracles; another, prophecy; another the gift of recognising spirits; another the gift of tongues and another the ability to interpret them. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who distributes different gifts to different people just as he chooses.

Gospel : John 2:1-11
There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited. When they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the wedding was all finished, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ Jesus said ‘Woman, why turn to me? My hour has not come yet.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among the Jews: each could hold twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’, and they filled them to the brim. ‘Draw some out now’ he told them ‘and take it to the steward.’ They did this; the steward tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. Having no idea where it came from – only the servants who had drawn the water knew – the steward called the bridegroom and said, ‘People generally serve the best wine first, and keep the cheaper sort till the guests have had plenty to drink; but you have kept the best wine till now.’ This was the first of the signs given by Jesus: it was given at Cana in Galilee. He let his glory be seen, and his disciples believed in him.

Grant us, O Lord, we pray, that we may participate worthily in these mysteries, for whenever the memorial of this sacrifice is celebrated the work of our redemption is accomplished. Through Christ our Lord.

Pour on us, O Lord, the Spirit of your love, and in your kindness make those you have nourished by this one heavenly Bread one in mind and heart. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
At the instance of His mother, Jesus intervenes in a situation that would have ordinarily caused a huge social embarrassment to the couple. By changing water into wine, he offered the wedding guests a brand of wine better than what the couple had offered initially. Rightly, He does all things well (cf. Mark 7:37). In doing the supernatural, Jesus points to the inauguration of His reign (cf. Amos 9:12-15). He demonstrates that God governs creation; he understands our needs and is interested in our joy and happiness; He walks with us even in the embarrassing moments of life, and has His time and His hour of glory. As Mary presented the situation to Jesus, allowing Him to do His will, in the same way we must never forget to turn to Jesus and to accept His will whatever it may be.

St. Ita
(c.475 – 570)
She was born in County Limerick, at a place now called Killeedy after her. She was known for her sanctity and for her gift of prophecy and was held in veneration by a large number of saints, both men and women.

Upon a lofty throne, I saw a man seated, whom a host of angels adore, singing in unison: Behold him, the name of whose empire is eternal.

Now some of the she-donkeys of Saul’s father Kish had strayed, so Kish said to Saul, ‘My son, take one of the servants with you and be off; go and look for the she-donkeys.’ They passed through the highlands of Ephraim and passed through the land of Shalishah, but did not find them; they passed through the land of Shaalim, they were not there; they passed through the land of Benjamin, but did not find them. When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, ‘That is the man of whom I told you; he shall rule my people.’ Saul accosted Samuel in the gateway and said, ‘Tell me, please, where the seer’s house is?’ Samuel replied to Saul, ‘I am the seer. Samuel took a phial of oil and poured it on Saul’s head; then he kissed him, saying, ‘Has not the Lord anointed you prince over his people Israel? You are the man who must rule the Lord’s people, and who must save them from the power of the enemies surrounding them.’

When Jesus was at dinner in his house, a number of tax collectors and sinners were also sitting at the table with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many of them among his followers. When the scribes of the Pharisee party saw him eating with sinners and tax collectors, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ When Jesus heard this he said to them, ‘It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. I did not come to call the virtuous, but sinners.’

Meditation
Jesus continues to fail the expectations of the scribes and pharisees. He does not stop at choosing a tax collector for a disciple, but goes ahead to dine with tax collectors and sinners. Surprised by grace, Levi abandons his profession, his source of livelihood and takes to an uncharted territory. It was sufficient for him that grace found him and surely grace would see him through. On the other hand, the scribes and pharisees, at the sight of the new world, the new order being established by Christ, are disgusted and prefer to continue seeing events through the prism of the old order. In spite of our sins, Christ is still interested in us and when we are called, we have the task of reaching out to others that they too may know Christ’s mercy.

St. Remi, évêque
Évêque de Reims pendant soixante-quinze ans, Remi (436-vers 530) intervint de façon décisive, en union avec la reine Clotilde, dans la conversion de Clovis au catholicisme. Le baptême du roi des Francs et de son armée par Remi (496) est à l’origine du rôle que joua la France dans l’histoire de l’Église et qui la fit appeler ‘’la fille aînée de l’Église’’.

Portons notre regard vers l’homme à qui le ciel est donné pour trône; la foule des anges l’adore en chantant d’une seule voix: «Voici Celui dont le pouvoir subsiste pour les siècles ».

1ère lecture : 1 S 9, 1-4.10c.17-19 ; 10, 1
Il y avait dans la tribu de Benjamin un homme appelé Kish. C’était un homme de valeur. Il avait un fils appelé Saül, qui était jeune et beau. Aucun fils d’Israël n’était plus beau que lui, et il dépassait tout le monde de plus d’une tête. Les ânesses appartenant à Kish, père de Saül, s’étaient égarées. Kish dit à son fils Saül: « Prends donc avec toi l’un des serviteurs, et pars à la recherche des ânesses.» Ils traversèrent la montagne d’Éphraïm, ils traversèrent le pays de Shalisha sans les trouver; ils traversèrent le pays de Shaalim: elles n’y étaient pas; ils traversèrent le pays de Benjamin sans les trouver. Alors ils allèrent à la ville où se trouvait l’homme de Dieu. Quand Samuel aperçut Saül, le Seigneur l’avertit: « Voilà l’homme dont je t’ai parlé; c’est lui qui exercera le pouvoir sur mon peuple.» Saül aborda Samuel à l’entrée de la ville et lui dit: « Indique-moi, je t’en prie, où est la maison du voyant.» Samuel répondit à Saül: « C’est moi le voyant. Monte devant moi au lieu sacré. Vous mangerez aujourd’hui avec moi. Demain matin, je te laisserai partir et je te renseignerai sur tout ce qui te préoccupe.» Le lendemain, Samuel prit la fiole d’huile et la répandit sur la tête de Saül; puis il l’embrassa et lui dit: « N’est-ce pas le Seigneur qui te donne l’onction comme chef sur son héritage ? »

R/ Seigneur, le roi se réjouit de ta force.
1. Seigneur, le roi se réjouit de ta force; quelle allégresse lui donne ta victoire ! Tu as répondu au désir de son cœur, tu n’as pas rejeté le souhait de ses lèvres.
2. Tu lui destines bénédictions et bienfaits, tu mets sur sa tête une couronne d’or. La vie qu’il t’a demandée, tu la lui donnes, de longs jours, des années sans fin.
3. Par ta victoire, grandit son éclat: tu le revêts de splendeur et de gloire. Tu mets en lui ta bénédiction pour toujours: ta présence l’emplit de joie !

Évangile : Mc 2, 13-17
En ce temps-là, Jésus sortit de nouveau le long de la mer; toute la foule venait à lui, et il les enseignait. En passant, il aperçut Lévi, fils d’Alphée, assis au bureau des impôts. Il lui dit: « Suis-moi.» L’homme se leva et le suivit. Comme Jésus était à table dans la maison de Lévi, beaucoup de publicains (c’est-à-dire des collecteurs d’impôts) et beaucoup de pécheurs vinrent prendre place avec Jésus et ses disciples, car ils étaient nombreux à le suivre. Les scribes du groupe des pharisiens, voyant qu’il mangeait avec les pécheurs et les publicains, disaient à ses disciples: « Comment ! Il mange avec les publicains et les pécheurs!» Jésus, qui avait entendu, leur déclara: « Ce ne sont pas les gens bien portants qui ont besoin du médecin, mais les malades. Je ne suis pas venu appeler des justes, mais des pécheurs. »

Daigne accepter, Seigneur, l’offrande de ton peuple: Qu’elle contribue à le sanctifier et lui obtienne ce qu’il demande avec confiance. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Jésus vient à notre rencontre, là où nous sommes, là où nous en sommes. Comme Lévi, nous sommes assis, pris dans nos occupations, liés par notre mal-être intérieur, retenus par nos enfermements. Et c’est justement là qu’il frappe à notre porte. C’est bien à nous qu’il s’adresse quand il dit « suis-moi ». C’est bien de chacun de nous qu’il veut avoir besoin. C’est bien nous qu’il veut mettre en route, debout. N’ayons pas peur de lui, ni de nous-mêmes. Réjouissons-nous de son appel. Même si tous les hommes ne sont pas guéris, nous sommes néanmoins tous invités à recevoir le salut, à accueillir le don de Dieu dans nos vies, à entrer dans la transformation profonde qu’implique l’accueil de ce don. Osons vivre cet accueil dans la confiance en celui qui a lui-même assumé la vulnérabilité de notre condition d’homme.
