St. Ado
An archbishop and scholar, Ado was born in Sens and educated at the Benedictine abbey of Ferrieres. Ado reformed the clergy in Vienne and wrote the lives of St. Desiderius and St. Theuderis. He was an energetic man of wide sympathies and considerable influence. Ado died in 875.

May your grace, almighty God, always go before us and follow after, so that we, who await with heartfelt desire the coming of your Only Begotten Son, may receive your help both now and in the life to come. Meditation
Bearing witness is central to Christian life. A witness is a person who testifies to the truth of a given fact. Every Christian has to be a witness of Jesus; he has to show the world, through his words and actions, that Jesus is alive, that Jesus is Lord, that Jesus is the one by whom we can be saved. John the Baptist bore witness to Jesus; we must do the same. The call to bear witness to Jesus is addressed to all of us, regardless of our origin or status. Whether we are rich or poor, black or white, from one ethnic group or another, does not matter; what matters is whether we make Jesus known wherever we find ourselves

St. Maria of Brescia
She is the foundress of the Handmaids of Charity of Brescia, also called the Servants of Charity. In the cholera epidemic of 1836, she became well-known as she directed a home for girls and began another residence for deaf and mute young ladies. Maria died in Brescia and was canonized in 1954.

Meditation
Isaiah addressed his message to a people who had lost everything because of their unfaithfulness to God. It was a message of consolation and hope; God had punished them in his anger, but was going to restore and purify them in his love. The Gospel tells us that sinners who acknowledge God’s will and change their lives gain his favour. God’s love is greater than his anger. No matter how sinful your life is, he can purify you and give you a chance to start afresh. All he needs is your acknowledgement of his will. Do not be stubborn and resist God’s call. Go to him with your sins and weaknesses, and experience his love and mercy.

Veuve et fondatrice de deux Congrégations religieuses : les « Soeurs de Notre-Dame du Refuge du Mont Calvaire » et les « Soeurs Filles de Notre-Dame au Mont Calvaire », Virginie (Virginia) naquit le 2 avril 1587 à Gênes (Italie). Son père fut Doge de la République au cours des années 1621-1622, sa mère étant également issue d’une famille d’antique noblesse. Elle mourut le 15 décembre 1651 à l’âge de 64 ans.

C’est de lui qu’il est écrit : Voici que j’envoie mon messager en avant de toi, pour préparer le chemin devant toi. Méditation
Influencés par le matérialisme de notre époque, certains reconnaissent le plan de Dieu pour leur vie principalement en termes de richesses, de réalisations et de positions. Cette attitude est minimaliste parce que comparée à la gloire du ciel, la gloire terrestre n’est rien. En outre, on peut avoir la gloire terrestre et ne pas être digne de la félicité céleste. Et même, parfois les choses pour lesquelles nous prions et jeûnons (richesses, position) deviennent de véritables obstacles à notre salut et à la paix de la société ? La vie éternelle est donc le grand dessein de Dieu pour nous, et ce grand dessein sera accompli lorsque nous nous réveillerons du sommeil de la mort pour nous retrouver dans son royaume éternel. Si nous croyons vraiment et d’un cœur sans partage, le plan de Dieu s’accomplira dans nos vies. En refusant de croire en Jean-Baptiste, les pharisiens ont contrecarré le plan de Dieu pour eux. Aujourd’hui, il ne s’agit pas seulement d’un refus de croire, mais de croire aux mauvaises choses (la richesse, etc.), avoir des priorités mal placées ; courir après nos propres plans malavisés au nom du plan de Dieu. Lorsque nous agissons ainsi, nous finissons par contrecarrer le plan de Dieu pour notre salut.

St. John of the Cross,
Priest, Doctor
(1542 – 1591)
He was born in Spain in 1542. He spent some time as a Carmelite friar before, in 1568, Saint Teresa of Ávila persuaded him to pioneer the reform of the Carmelite order. He is considered one of the great mystics of the church. He was canonized in 1726 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1926.

May I never boast, except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

O God, who gave the Priest Saint John an outstanding dedication to perfect self-denial and love of the Cross, grant that, by imitating him closely at all times, we may come to contemplate eternally your glory. Meditation
Today God tells us: “I am the Lord, unrivalled: there is no other god besides me. Turn to me and be saved.” We have invented so many false gods: wealth, honour, position, power, work, social media, sex etc. None of these things can give us lasting happiness; to find fulfillment, we must turn to God. God manifests his saving power in Jesus, whose teaching and sacrifice on the cross liberate us from the bondage of sin and death and our attachment to the ephemeral things of this world, and give us eternal life. Happy are those who have no doubts about Jesus. Happy are those who turn to him; they shall have life, and life to the full.

St. Jean de la Croix,
prêtre et docteur
de l’Église
Carme ordonné prêtre en 1567, Jean de la Croix (1542-1591) rencontre et devient le collaborateur de Thérèse de Jésus, réformatrice du Carmel. Il est emprisonné par les carmes opposé à cette réforme. Dans son cachot, il compose son Cantique spirituel qui chante les joies de l’union à Dieu. Ses ouvrages, qui exposent les conditions et les signes de la contemplation véritable, lui ont mérité le titre de ‘’Docteur mystique’’.

- J’écoute : que dira le Seigneur Dieu ? Ce qu’il dit, c’est la paix pour son peuple et ses fidèles. Son salut est proche de ceux qui le craignent, et la gloire habitera notre terre.
- Amour et vérité se rencontrent, justice et paix s’embrassent ; la vérité germera de la terre et du ciel se penchera la justice.
- Le Seigneur donnera ses bienfaits, et notre terre donnera son fruit. La justice marchera devant lui, et ses pas traceront le chemin.

Puis il répondit aux envoyés : « Allez annoncer à Jean ce que vous avez vu et entendu : les aveugles retrouvent la vue, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont purifiés, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, les pauvres reçoivent la Bonne Nouvelle. Méditation
Dans la première lecture, le prophète Isaïe, à travers un oracle, annonce le salut. Ce salut sera apporté par le Messie. Pour y accéder, nous devons nous tourner vers lui, c’est-à-dire l’accueillir car, en dehors de lui, il n’y a pas de salut ou de victoire. Et nous aujourd’hui ? Nous préférons servir les dieux de ce monde, les grands maîtres porteurs d’illusions, qui sont incapables de nous apporter le véritable salut. Le véritable salut ne réside qu’en Dieu seul. Ce n’est que Jésus-Christ qui l’accomplit dans les miracles, les merveilles opérées, les guérisons ou les délivrances (Cf. Évangile). Accueillons le Messie qui vient, et nous serons sauvés.
