Il eut 11 ans de pontificat. L’histoire a retenu la visite que lui rendit saint Polycarpe en vue de fixer avec lui la fête de Pâques. Ils ne purent cependant pas s’accorder en raison de la différence de leurs traditions d’appartenance.

Que notre seule fierté soit la croix de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ. En lui, nous avons le salut, la vie et la résurrection, par lui, nous sommes sauvés et délivrés.
Prière d’ouverture
Tu nous appelles, Dieu notre Père, à célébrer ce soir la très sainte Cène où ton Fils unique, avant de se livrer lui-même à la mort, a voulu remettre à son Église le sacrifice nouveau de l´Alliance éternelle ; Fais que nous recevions de ce repas qui est le sacrement de son amour, la charité et la vie. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Exode 12, 1-8.11-14
En ces jours-là, dans le pays d’Égypte, le Seigneur dit à Moïse et à son frère Aaron : « Ce mois-ci sera pour vous le premier des mois, il marquera pour vous le commencement de l’année. Parlez ainsi à toute la communauté d’Israël : le dix de ce mois, que l’on prenne un agneau par famille, un agneau par maison. Si la maisonnée est trop peu nombreuse pour un agneau, elle le prendra avec son voisin le plus proche, selon le nombre des personnes. Vous choisirez l’agneau d’après ce que chacun peut manger. Ce sera une bête sans défaut, un mâle, de l’année. Vous prendrez un agneau ou un chevreau. Vous le garderez jusqu’au quatorzième jour du mois. Dans toute l’assemblée de la communauté d’Israël, on l’immolera au coucher du soleil. On prendra du sang, que l’on mettra sur les deux montants et sur le linteau des maisons où on le mangera. On mangera sa chair cette nuit-là, on la mangera rôtie au feu, avec des pains sans levain et des herbes amères. Vous mangerez ainsi: la ceinture aux reins, les sandales aux pieds, le bâton à la main. Vous mangerez en toute hâte : c’est la Pâque du Seigneur. Je traverserai le pays d’Égypte, cette nuit-là ; je frapperai tout premier-né au pays d’Égypte, depuis les hommes jusqu’au bétail. Contre tous les dieux de l’Égypte j’exercerai mes jugements: Je suis le Seigneur. Le sang sera pour vous un signe, sur les maisons où vous serez. Je verrai le sang, et je passerai : vous ne serez pas atteints par le fléau dont je frapperai le pays d’Égypte. Ce jour-là sera pour vous un mémorial. Vous en ferez pour le Seigneur une fête de pèlerinage. C’est un décret perpétuel : d’âge en âge vous la fêterez. »

R/ La coupe de bénédiction est communion au sang du Christ.
Comment rendrai-je au Seigneur tout le bien qu’il m’a fait ? J’élèverai la coupe du salut, j’invoquerai le nom du Seigneur.
Il en coûte au Seigneur de voir mourir les siens ! Ne suis-je pas, Seigneur, ton serviteur, moi, dont tu brisas les chaînes ?
Je t’offrirai le sacrifice d’action de grâce, j’invoquerai le nom du Seigneur. Je tiendrai mes promesses au Seigneur, oui, devant tout son peuple.
2ème lecture : 1 Co 11, 23-26
Frères, moi, Paul, j’ai moi-même reçu ce qui vient du Seigneur, et je vous l’ai transmis : la nuit où il était livré, le Seigneur Jésus prit du pain puis, ayant rendu grâce, il le rompit, et dit : « Ceci est mon corps, qui est pour vous. Faites cela en mémoire de moi. » Après le repas, il fit de même avec la coupe, en disant: « Cette coupe est la nouvelle Alliance en mon sang. Chaque fois que vous en boirez, faites cela en mémoire de moi. » Ainsi donc, chaque fois que vous mangez ce pain et que vous buvez cette coupe, vous proclamez la mort du Seigneur, jusqu’à ce qu’il vienne.

Évangile : Jean 13, 1-15
Avant la fête de la Pâque, sachant que l’heure était venue pour lui de passer de ce monde à son Père, Jésus, ayant aimé les siens qui étaient dans le monde, les aima jusqu’au bout. Au cours du repas, alors que le diable a déjà mis dans le cœur de Judas, fils de Simon l’Iscariote, l’intention de le livrer, Jésus, sachant que le Père a tout remis entre ses mains, qu’il est sorti de Dieu et qu’il s’en va vers Dieu, se lève de table, dépose son vêtement, et prend un linge qu’il se noue à la ceinture ; puis il verse de l’eau dans un bassin. Alors il se mit à laver les pieds des disciples et à les essuyer avec le linge qu’il avait à la ceinture. Il arrive donc à Simon-Pierre, qui lui dit : « C’est toi, Seigneur, qui me laves les pieds ?» Jésus lui répondit : « Ce que je veux faire, tu ne le sais pas maintenant ; plus tard tu comprendras. » Pierre lui dit : « Tu ne me laveras pas les pieds ; non, jamais ! » Jésus lui répondit: « Si je ne te lave pas, tu n’auras pas de part avec moi. » Simon-Pierre lui dit : « Alors, Seigneur, pas seulement les pieds, mais aussi les mains et la tête ! » Jésus lui dit : « Quand on vient de prendre un bain, on n’a pas besoin de se laver, sinon les pieds : on est pur tout entier. Vous-mêmes, vous êtes purs, mais non pas tous. » Il savait bien qui allait le livrer; et c’est pourquoi il disait : « Vous n’êtes pas tous purs. » Quand il leur eut lavé les pieds, il reprit son vêtement, se remit à table et leur dit: « Comprenez-vous ce que je viens de faire pour vous ? Vous m’appelez “Maître” et “Seigneur”, et vous avez raison, car vraiment je le suis. Si donc moi, le Seigneur et le Maître, je vous ai lavé les pieds, vous aussi, vous devez vous laver les pieds les uns aux autres. C’est un exemple que je vous ai donné afin que vous fassiez, vous aussi, comme j’ai fait pour vous. ».
Prière sur les offrandes
Seigneur, accorde-nous la grâce de vraiment participer à cette eucharistie ; Car chaque fois qu´est célébré ce sacrifice en mémorial, c´est l´œuvre de notre Rédemption qui s´accomplit. Par Jésus.

Méditation
« Comprenez-vous ce que je viens de faire pour vous ? » Nous célébrons l’institution de l’Eucharistie et du sacerdoce. C’est la miséricorde et l’amour de Dieu qu’il appelle parmi nos enfants certains au sacerdoce. Être prêtre, c’est être intendant des mystères du Christ. Qui sommes-nous pour que le Christ descende entre nos mains nues ? Priez pour vos prêtres afin qu’ils soient fidèles à la mission divine.

She was born in 1844 to a destitute family in Lourdes, in France. On 11 February 1858 she received the first of a series of visions of the Mother of God which led to Lourdes becoming a place of pilgrimage and healing. In 1866 she became a nun at Nevers, where she died on 16 April 1879.

Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, ‘Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the passover?’ ‘Go to so-and-so in the city’ he replied ‘and say to him, “The Master says: My time is near. Meditation
The name Judas is immediately associated with betrayal, prompting contemplation on the darkness that can lurk even within the closest circles. Judas agrees to betray his master for thirty pieces of silver, showcasing a willingness to exchange the priceless for the mundane and the sacred for the temporal. Judas’ act was not a sudden betrayal but a gradual culmination of darkness slowly taking root within him—a poignant reminder to be vigilant against the subtle temptations that can lead us astray from God’s path. While we may distance ourselves, saying, “Thank God I am not like Judas,” it seems essential to reflect on how often we, like Judas, compromise our values for fleeting gains. In our pursuit of various forms of silver, do we inadvertently betray the precious gift of our faith? Let us reflect on the price of our betrayals—moments when we choose the allure of silver over the enduring riches of God’s grace. May we choose loyalty and service, rejecting the allure of betrayal, and walk as true disciples towards the light of Easter.

Meditation
During the intimate Passover meal with his chosen twelve, Jesus’ words shatter the air: “I tell you most solemnly, one of you will betray me.” On the one hand, Judas’ betrayal serves as a stark reminder that even in the most sacred spaces, darkness can creep in. It speaks to the human capacity for deception and the ongoing struggle between good and evil within ourselves. It prompts us to reflect: have we ever betrayed someone’s trust, even in a small way? Do we recognise the potential for betrayal within our hearts? In contrast to Judas, the other disciples, though confused and troubled, choose to remain with Jesus. Their presence serves as a reminder that true discipleship involves staying close to Christ, even in moments of uncertainty. This prompts us to consider: are we willing to stand by Jesus, even when it is a difficult or unpopular thing to do? Lent offers us a sacred time to evaluate our discipleship. It is an opportunity to draw closer to Jesus, allowing His teachings and example to shape our lives and guide us in navigating the complexities of our human nature.

1ère lecture : Is 49, 1-6
Écoutez-moi, îles lointaines ! Peuples éloignés, soyez attentifs ! J’étais encore dans le sein maternel quand le Seigneur m’a appelé ; j’étais encore dans les entrailles de ma mère quand il a prononcé mon nom. Il a fait de ma bouche une épée tranchante, il m’a protégé par l’ombre de sa main ; il a fait de moi une flèche acérée, il m’a caché dans son carquois. Évangile : Jn 13, 21-33.36-38
En ce temps-là, au cours du repas que Jésus prenait avec ses disciples, il fut bouleversé en son esprit, et il rendit ce témoignage : « Amen, amen, je vous le dis : l’un de vous me livrera. » Les disciples se regardaient les uns les autres avec embarras, ne sachant pas de qui Jésus parlait. Il y avait à table, appuyé contre Jésus, l’un de ses disciples, celui que Jésus aimait. Simon-Pierre lui fait signe de demander à Jésus de qui il veut parler. Le disciple se penche donc sur la poitrine de Jésus et lui dit: « Seigneur, qui est-ce ? » Jésus lui répond: « C’est celui à qui je donnerai la bouchée que je vais tremper dans le plat. » Il trempe la bouchée, et la donne à Judas, fils de Simon l’Iscariote. Et, quand Judas eut pris la bouchée, Satan entra en lui. Jésus lui dit alors : « Ce que tu fais, fais-le vite. » Mais aucun des convives ne comprit pourquoi il lui avait dit cela. Comme Judas tenait la bourse commune, certains pensèrent que Jésus voulait lui dire d’acheter ce qu’il fallait pour la fête, ou de donner quelque chose aux pauvres. Judas prit donc la bouchée, et sortit aussitôt. Or il faisait nuit. Quand il fut sorti, Jésus déclara : « Maintenant le Fils de l’homme est glorifié, et Dieu est glorifié en lui. Si Dieu est glorifié en lui, Dieu aussi le glorifiera; et il le glorifiera bientôt. Petits enfants, c’est pour peu de temps encore que je suis avec vous. Vous me chercherez, et, comme je l’ai dit aux Juifs : “Là où je vais, vous ne pouvez pas aller”, je vous le dis maintenant à vous aussi. » Simon-Pierre lui dit : « Seigneur, où vas-tu? » Jésus lui répondit : « Là où je vais, tu ne peux pas me suivre maintenant; tu me suivras plus tard. » Pierre lui dit: « Seigneur, pourquoi ne puis-je pas te suivre à présent ? Je donnerai ma vie pour toi ! » Jésus réplique : « Tu donneras ta vie pour moi ? Amen, amen, je te le dis: le coq ne chantera pas avant que tu m’aies renié trois fois. »
Prière sur les offrandes
Regarde avec amour, Seigneur, le sacrifice offert par ta famille ; toi qui nous donnes déjà de participer à tes sacrements, accorde-nous encore la grâce de parvenir aux biens dont ils sont le signe. Par Jésus.

Dieu n’a pas refusé son propre Fils, il l’a livré pour nous tous : en nous le donnant, il nous a tout donné.
Prière après la communion
Tu nous as nourris, Seigneur, de ton Eucharistie, et nous en appelons à ta miséricorde : par le sacrement, qui déjà nous donne ta force, rends-nous participants de la vie éternelle. Par Jésus.
Méditation
« L’un de vous me livrera. » La mort prochaine du Christ est sa glorification, et Dieu est glorifié en lui. Voilà quelque chose d’assez absurde. Mais la mort annoncée du Christ est la victoire du bien sur le mal, de la lumière sur les ténèbres. Tel est le chemin humainement inverse dans lequel nous sommes engagés. Sais-tu que c’est dans tes petites morts que surgit la vie ?

Saint Lydwine is the patroness of sickness. She was born in Holland. She experienced mystical gifts, including supernatural visions of heaven, hell, purgatory, apparitions of Christ, and the stigmata. She was canonized Pope Leo XIII in 1890.

First reading : Isaiah 42:1-7
Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout aloud, or make his voice heard in the streets. He does not break the crushed reed, nor quench the wavering flame. Faithfully he brings true justice; he will neither waver, nor be crushed until true justice is established on earth, for the islands are awaiting his law. Thus says God, the Lord, he who created the heavens and spread them out, who gave shape to the earth and what comes from it, who gave breath to its people and life to the creatures that move in it: ‘I, the Lord, have called you to serve the cause of right; I have taken you by the hand and formed you; I have appointed you as covenant of the people and light of the nations, ‘to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison, and those who live in darkness from the dungeon.’

Gospel : John 12:1-11
Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom he had raised from the dead. They gave a dinner for him there; Martha waited on them and Lazarus was among those at table. Mary brought in a pound of very costly ointment, pure nard, and with it anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her hair; the house was full of the scent of the ointment. Then Judas Iscariot – one of his disciples, the man who was to betray him – said, ‘Why wasn’t this ointment sold for three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor?’ He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he was in charge of the common fund and used to help himself to the contributions. So Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone; she had to keep this scent for the day of my burial. You have the poor with you always, you will not always have me.’ Meanwhile a large number of Jews heard that he was there and came not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead. Then the chief priests decided to kill Lazarus as well, since it was on his account that many of the Jews were leaving them and believing in Jesus.

Visit your people, O Lord, we pray, and with ever-watchful love, look upon the hearts dedicated to you by means of these sacred mysteries, so that under your protection, we may keep safe this remedy of eternal salvation, which by your mercy we have received. Through Christ our Lord.

May your protection, O Lord, we pray, defend the humble and keep ever safe those who trust in your mercy, that they may celebrate the paschal festivities not only with bodily observance but above all with purity of mind. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The woman’s act of anointing the Lord with costly perfume is a profound expression of her love and understanding of Jesus’ imminent sacrifice. Choosing the most expensive gift available, she goes beyond mere luxury. The perfume she pours out becomes a symbol of her heart, devotion, and recognition of Jesus’ divinity and the purpose of His earthly journey. Her gesture stands as an extravagant act of love poured out at Jesus’ feet. Through his actions, Jesus exemplifies the depth of God’s love for His people. He shows kindness to children, strangers, and even sinners, demonstrating his mission to save. By accepting the woman’s costly gift, Jesus reveals God’s love for rebels, emphasising the extraordinary nature of His love. Mary’s action foreshadows how Jesus’ body will be anointed in the tomb. The scent filling the house symbolises the spreading of the good news to people of all ages, illustrating that, just as the smell permeates the space, Jesus’ body cannot be confined in a tomb. It becomes a powerful symbol of the transformative and liberating impact of Jesus’ resurrection.
