FRIDAY 13 FEBRUARY

SAINT CATHERINE OF RICCI
Psalter I | GREEN

She was an Italian Catholic nun, born in Florence, and later known as a mystic and saint. Her early life included a period at the Convent of Monticelli, where she was cared for by her aunt, a nun. She later entered the Dominican Order, taking the name Catherine and dedicating her life to religious service.

Entrance Antiphon: Ps 94: 6-7
O come, let us worship God and bow low before the God who made us, for he is the Lord our God.

Collect
Keep your family safe, O Lord, with unfailing care, that, relying solely on the hope of heavenly grace, they may be defended always by your protection. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

First reading: 1 Kings 11:29-32; 12:19
Jeroboam left Jerusalem, and the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite met him on the road. The two were alone in the area, and the prophet was wearing a new cloak. Ahijah took off his new cloak, tore it into twelve pieces, and said to Jeroboam: “Take ten pieces for yourself; the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will tear away the kingdom from Solomon’s grasp and will give you ten of the tribes. One tribe shall remain to him for the sake of David my servant, and of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.'” Israel went into rebellion against David’s house to this day.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 81:10-11ab, 12-13, 14-15
R/ I am the Lord, your God: hear my voice.

  1. There shall be no strange god among you nor shall you worship any alien god. I, the Lord, am your God who led you forth from the land of Egypt.”
  2. My people heard not my voice, and Israel obeyed me not; So I gave them up to the hardness of their hearts; they walked according to their own counsels.”
  3. If only my people would hear me, and Israel walk in my ways, Quickly would I humble their enemies; against their foes I would turn my hand.”

Gospel Acclamation: Acts 16:14b
Alleluia, alleluia. Open our hearts, O Lord, to listen to the words of your Son. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel: Mark 7:31-37
Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”) And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Prayer over the Offerings
O Lord, our God, who once established these created things to sustain us in our frailty, grant, we pray, that they may become for us now the Sacrament of eternal life. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon: Cf. Ps 106: 8-9
Let them thank the Lord for his mercy, his wonders for the children of men, for he satisfies the thirsty soul, and the hungry he fills with good things.

Prayer after Communion
O God, who have willed that we be partakers in the one Bread and the one Chalice, grant us, we pray, so to live that, made one in Christ, we may joyfully bear fruit for the salvation of the world. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
“I am the Lord your God; hear my voice.” A prominent theme in the Old Testament is idolatry. God is always warning the Israelites not to worship other gods, but to remain faithful to him and serve him alone. An idol must not be a carved statue to which we offer sacrifices; it is anything or anybody to which we attach more importance than to God. When television and social media leave us with no time to pray, when the love of wealth and positions makes us ready to oppress and destroy others, when our desire for alcohol and sex is so strong that we want to satisfy it at all costs, these things become idols; they make us turn away from God. Like the deaf and dumb man in the Gospel, we become closed; we are incapable of hearing God’s voice and doing his will. Let us turn back to God today and ask Jesus to open us to his grace. May he open our ears, that we may listen to his Word; may he open our hearts, that we may allow him to dwell in us and take the first place in our lives; may he open our mouths, that we may proclaim his Word and help others to turn away from their own idols.

THURSDAY 12 FEBRUARY

SAINT FEBRONIA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR
Psalter I | GREEN

She was a nun at Nisibis (modern-day Nusaybin, Turkey). She suffered persecution under Diocletian, who offered her freedom if she renounced her faith and married his nephew, Lysimachus, who had been leaning towards conversion to Christianity. Febronia refused and was tortured, suffered mutilation and death. Lysimachus, witnessing her suffering, converted.

First reading: 1 Kings 11:4-13
When Solomon was old his wives had turned his heart to strange gods, and his heart was not entirely with the Lord, his God, as the heart of his father David had been. By adoring Astarte, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom, the idol of the Ammonites, Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not follow him unreservedly as his father David had done. Solomon then built a high place to Chemosh, the idol of Moab, and to Molech, the idol of the Ammonites, on the hill opposite Jerusalem. He did the same for all his foreign wives who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods. The Lord, therefore, became angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice (for though the Lord had forbidden him this very act of following strange gods, Solomon had not obeyed him). So the Lord said to Solomon: “Since this is what you want, and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes which I enjoined on you, I will deprive you of the kingdom and give it to your servant. I will not do this during your lifetime, however, for the sake of your father David; it is your son whom I will deprive. Nor will I take away the whole kingdom. I will leave your son one tribe for the sake of my servant David and of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 106:3-4, 35-36, 37 and 40
R/ Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people.

  1. Blessed are they who observe what is right, who do always what is just. Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people; visit us with your saving help.
  2. But they mingled with the nations and learned their works. They served their idols, which became a snare for them.
  3. They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons. And the Lord grew angry with his people, and abhorred his inheritance.

Gospel Acclamation: James 1:21bc
Alleluia, alleluia. Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel: Mark 7:24-30
Jesus went to the district of Tyre. He entered a house and wanted no one to know about it, but he could not escape notice. Soon a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him. She came and fell at his feet. The woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth, and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, “Let the children be fed first. For it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She replied and said to him, “Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.” Then he said to her, “For saying this, you may go. The demon has gone out of your daughter.” When the woman went home, she found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.

Meditation
“Blessed are they who observe what is right.” God always gives us the choice to either follow him or turn away from him, and our choice comes with consequences. If we choose to serve him then he will be with us and bless us; but if we choose to reject him, then he abandons us and we meet with disaster. As long as King Solomon obeyed God, God blessed him; he was the wisest, richest and most powerful king of his time. But when he abandoned God and gave in to idolatry, he lost God’s blessing. Human life is a series of choices, and ultimately, the choice we have to make every day is between good and evil. The story of Solomon teaches us that the choice of good over evil is not made once and for all; it is a choice that we have to renew every day in order to remain on the right path. The pagan woman in the Gospel chose to come to Jesus because she had in faith in his ability to heal her daughter. Let us choose Jesus like her, and more importantly, let us remain with Jesus, not just sometimes, but throughout our lives.

JEUDI 12 FÉVRIER

SAINT FELIX
(Vert)

WEDNESDAY 11 FEBRUARY

OUR LADY OF LOURDES
Psalter I | GREEN//WHITE

In 1858 the immaculate Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, near Lourdes in France, in the cavern called “de Massabielle.” Through this poor, fourteen-year-old girl, Mary calls on sinners to change their lives. She has inspired in the Church a great love of prayer and good works, especially in the service of the poor and the sick.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.

First reading: 1 Kings 10:1-10
The queen of Sheba, having heard of Solomon’s fame, came to test him with subtle questions. She arrived in Jerusalem with a very numerous retinue, and with camels bearing spices, a large amount of gold, and precious stones. She came to Solomon and questioned him on every subject in which she was interested. King Solomon explained everything she asked about, and there remained nothing hidden from him that he could not explain to her. When the queen of Sheba witnessed Solomon’s great wisdom, the palace he had built, the food at his table, the seating of his ministers, the attendance and garb of his waiters, his banquet service, and the burnt offerings he offered in the temple of the Lord, she was breathless. “The report I heard in my country about your deeds and your wisdom is true,” she told the king. “Though I did not believe the report until I came and saw with my own eyes, I have discovered that they were not telling me the half. Your wisdom and prosperity surpass the report I heard. Blessed are your men, blessed these servants of yours, who stand before you always and listen to your wisdom. Blessed be the Lord, your God, whom it has pleased to place you on the throne of Israel. In his enduring love for Israel, the Lord has made you king to carry out judgment and justice.” Then she gave the king one hundred and twenty gold talents, a very large quantity of spices, and precious stones. Never again did anyone bring such an abundance of spices as the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 37:5-6, 30-31, 39-40
R/ The mouth of the just murmurs wisdom.

  1. Commit to the Lord your way; trust in him, and he will act. He will make justice dawn for you like the light; bright as the noonday shall be your vindication.
  2. The mouth of the just man tells of wisdom and his tongue utters what is right. The law of his God is in his heart, and his steps do not falter.
  3. The salvation of the just is from the Lord; he is their refuge in time of distress. And the Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.

Gospel Acclamation: John 17:17b, 17a
Alleluia, alleluia. Your word, O Lord, is truth: consecrate us in the truth. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel: Mark 7:14-23
Jesus summoned the crowd again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.” When he got home away from the crowd his disciples questioned him about the parable. He said to them, “Are even you likewise without understanding? Do you not realize that everything that goes into a person from outside cannot defile, since it enters not the heart but the stomach and passes out into the latrine?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) “But what comes out of the man, that is what defiles him. From within the man, from his heart, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.”

Meditation
“But what comes out of the man, that is what defiles him.” Yesterday, Jesus asked us to purify our traditions; today, he is asking us to purify our hearts. The heart refers to our character, our thoughts, our intentions – in short, that which determines who we are and motivates our actions. If our thoughts and intentions are characterised by envy, anger, lust, pride, greed and other similar vices, they will lead us to acts such as adultery, fornication, gossip, slander, bribery, corruption, and every other thing that is displeasing to God. But if we are motivated by the love of God and the desire to do his will, then piety, humility, honesty, chastity, gentleness and compassion will characterise our way of life. King Solomon was declared to be a blessing to his people by the queen of Sheba because he loved God and obeyed his will. Let us follow his example and allow the love of God and neighbour to dwell in our hearts and inspire all our actions. As St. Augustine advises, “Love, and do what you will…. Let the root of love be in you: nothing can spring from it but good.”
