MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

From antiquity, Mary has been called “God-Bearer”. The word in Greek is “Theotokos”. The term was used as part of the popular piety of the early first millennium church.

O God, who through the fruitful virginity of Blessed Mary bestowed on the human race the grace of eternal salvation, grant, we pray, that we may experience the intercession of her, through whom we were found worthy to receive the author of life, our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
First Reading: Numbers 6:22-27
The Lord spoke to Moses and said, ‘Say this to Aaron and his sons: “This is how you are to bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them: May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord let his face shine on you and be gracious to you. Gospel: Luke 2:16-21
The shepherds hurried away to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen; it was exactly as they had been told. When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, the name the angel had given him before his conception.

Meditation
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, the World Day of Prayer for peace and the first day of the New Year 2024. Happy New Year! The theme of peace permeates the Christmas season, as seen in the liturgical texts and melodies. At his birth, angels were singing «Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace to people of Goodwill. Our newborn king, Jesus, is the «prince of peace.» Our Blessed Mother, whom we celebrate today, is the mother of God, the mother of the «prince of peace.» No wonder the Church calls her Queen of Peace. Peace is essential for our nation and world. As we begin this New Year, it is an appropriate time to dedicate ourselves to pursuing peace. Conflict and trouble are destroying many people. As Christians, we must pray for peace and always work hard to champion the cause of peace. Peace is the blessing we need from the Church, our governments, work areas, schools, and brothers and sisters from all walks of life. May God continue to bless us with His ‘Peace.’

Prière d’ouverture
Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que la Sainte Famille nous soit donnée en exemple; Accorde-nous la grâce de pratiquer, comme elle, les vertus familiales et d’être unis par les liens de ton amour, avant de nous retrouver pour l’éternité dans la joie de ta maison. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Gn 15, 1-6 ; 21, 1-3
En ces jours-là, la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Abram dans une vision : « Ne crains pas, Abram ! Je suis un bouclier pour toi. Ta récompense sera très grande. » Abram répondit : « Mon Seigneur Dieu, que pourrais-tu donc me donner ? Je m’en vais sans enfant, et l’héritier de ma maison, c’est Élièzer de Damas. » Abram dit encore : « Tu ne m’as pas donné de descendance, et c’est un de mes serviteurs qui sera mon héritier. » Alors cette parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Abram : « Ce n’est pas lui qui sera ton héritier, mais quelqu’un de ton sang. » Puis il le fit sortir et lui dit : « Regarde le ciel, et compte les étoiles, si tu le peux… » Et il déclara : « Telle sera ta descendance ! » Abram eut foi dans le Seigneur et le Seigneur estima qu’il était juste. R/ Le Seigneur, c’est lui notre Dieu ; il s’est toujours souvenu de son alliance. 104, 7a.8a
Rendez grâce au Seigneur, proclamez son nom, annoncez parmi les peuples ses hauts faits ; chantez et jouez pour lui, redites sans fin ses merveilles.
Glorifiez-vous de son nom très saint : joie pour les cœurs qui cherchent Dieu! Cherchez le Seigneur et sa puissance, recherchez sans trêve sa face.
Souvenez-vous des merveilles qu’il a faites, de ses prodiges, des jugements qu’il prononça, vous, la race d’Abraham son serviteur, les fils de Jacob, qu’il a choisis.
Il s’est toujours souvenu de son alliance, parole édictée pour mille générations : promesse faite à Abraham, garantie par serment à Isaac.
2ème lecture : Col 3, 12-21
Frères, puisque vous avez été choisis par Dieu, que vous êtes sanctifiés, aimés par lui, revêtez-vous de tendresse et de compassion, de bonté, d’humilité, de douceur et de patience. Supportez-vous les uns les autres, et pardonnez-vous mutuellement si vous avez des reproches à vous faire. Le Seigneur vous a pardonné: faites de même. Par-dessus tout cela, ayez l’amour, qui est le lien le plus parfait. Et que, dans vos cœurs, règne la paix du Christ à laquelle vous avez été appelés, vous qui formez un seul corps. Vivez dans l’action de grâce. Que la parole du Christ habite en vous dans toute sa richesse; instruisez-vous et reprenez-vous les uns les autres en toute sagesse ; par des psaumes, des hymnes et des chants inspirés, chantez à Dieu, dans vos cœurs, votre reconnaissance. Évangile: Lc 2, 22-40
Quand fut accompli le temps prescrit par la loi de Moïse pour la purification, les parents de Jésus l’amenèrent à Jérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur, selon ce qui est écrit dans la Loi : Tout premier-né de sexe masculin sera consacré au Seigneur. Ils venaient aussi offrir le sacrifice prescrit par la loi du Seigneur : un couple de tourterelles ou deux petites colombes. Or, il y avait à Jérusalem un homme appelé Syméon. C’était un homme juste et religieux, qui attendait la Consolation d’Israël, et l’Esprit Saint était sur lui. Il avait reçu de l’Esprit Saint l’annonce qu’il ne verrait pas la mort avant d’avoir vu le Christ, le Messie du Seigneur. Sous l’action de l’Esprit, Syméon vint au Temple. Au moment où les parents présentaient l’enfant Jésus pour se conformer au rite de la Loi qui le concernait, Syméon reçut l’enfant dans ses bras, et il bénit Dieu en disant : « Maintenant, ô Maître souverain, tu peux laisser ton serviteur s’en aller en paix, selon ta parole. Car mes yeux ont vu le salut que tu préparais à la face des peuples : lumière qui se révèle aux nations et donne gloire à ton peuple Israël. » Le père et la mère de l’enfant s’étonnaient de ce qui était dit de lui. Syméon les bénit, puis il dit à Marie sa mère : « Voici que cet enfant provoquera la chute et le relèvement de beaucoup en Israël. Il sera un signe de contradiction – et toi, ton âme sera traversée d’un glaive – : ainsi seront dévoilées les pensées qui viennent du cœur d’un grand nombre. » Il y avait aussi une femme prophète, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d’Aser. Elle était très avancée en âge ; après sept ans de mariage, demeurée veuve, elle était arrivée à l’âge de quatre-vingt-quatre ans. Elle ne s’éloignait pas du Temple, servant Dieu jour et nuit dans le jeûne et la prière. Survenant à cette heure même, elle proclamait les louanges de Dieu et parlait de l’enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient la délivrance de Jérusalem. Lorsqu’ils eurent achevé tout ce que prescrivait la loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent en Galilée, dans leur ville de Nazareth. L’enfant, lui, grandissait et se fortifiait, rempli de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.

En t’offrant, Seigneur, le sacrifice qui nous réconcilie avec toi, nous te supplions humblement: À la prière de la Vierge Marie, Mère de Dieu, et à la prière de saint Joseph, affermis nos familles dans ta grâce et la paix. Par Jésus.

Prière après la communion
Toi qui nous as fortifiés par cette communion, accorde à nos familles, Père très aimant, la grâce d’imiter la famille de ton Fils, et de goûter avec elle, après les difficultés de cette vie, le bonheur sans fin. Par Jésus.
Méditation
La foi est un dynamisme vital extraordinaire, une aventure dans le compagnonnage de l’invisible. Vivre de la foi c’est de ne pas estimer tout perdu, même quand ce que l’on a bâti s’écroule. Il s’agit non plus de désespérer, même quand la mort nous surprend sans que nous ayons vu se réaliser les promesses de Dieu. Abraham est le premier à avoir vécu intensément de foi. Nous sommes conviés à faire confiance en Dieu et travailler dans cette optique, sachant que les résultats ne relèvent pas de l’immédiateté, car Dieu est à l’œuvre. Comme architecte, Il fait le plan, Il bâtit et le réalise au jour le jour. En cette fête de la Sainte famille, il serait intéressant que « la foi », vertu théologale à travers laquelle le projet de Dieu s’accomplit, retentisse dans nos cœurs, dans tous les couples, dans les foyers. Le chemin de la foi est obscur, mais il est sûr. « Croire » implique la solidité, la fermeté. C’est « tenir fermement jusqu’au bout, même dans le doute, le découragement ou l’angoisse.

O God, who were pleased to give us the shining example of the Holy Family, graciously grant that we may imitate them in practising the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity, and so, in the joy of your house, delight one day in eternal rewards. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Genesis 15: 1-6, 21: 1-3
The word of the Lord was spoken to Abram in a vision, “Have no fear, Abram, I am your shield; your reward will be very great.” “My Lord,” Abram replied, “what do you intend to give me? I go childless…” Then Abram said, “See, you have given me no descendants; some man of my household will be my heir.” And then this word of the Lord was spoken to him, “He shall not be your heir; your heir shall be of your own flesh and blood.” Then taking him outside he said, “Look up to heaven and count the stars if you can. Such will be your descendants,” he told him. Abram put his faith in the Lord, who counted this as making him justified. The Lord dealt kindly with Sarah as he had said, and did what he had promised. Second reading: Colossians 3:12-21

When the day came for them to be purified as laid down by the Law of Moses, the parents of Jesus took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, – observing what stands written in the Law of the Lord: Every first-born male must be consecrated to the Lord – and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is said in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he looked forward to Israel’s comforting and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the Law required, he took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said: “Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, just as you promised; because my eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared for all the nations to see, a light to enlighten the pagans and the glory of your people Israel.” As the child’s father and mother stood there wondering at the things that were being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “You see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected – and a sword will pierce your own soul too – so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.” There was a prophetess also, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was well on in years. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayer. She came by just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem. When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. Meanwhile the child grew to maturity, and he was filled with wisdom; and God’s favour was with him.

We offer you, Lord, the sacrifice of conciliation, humbly asking that, through the intercession of the Virgin Mother of God and Saint Joseph, you may establish our families firmly in your grace and your peace. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
Bring those you refresh with this heavenly Sacrament, most merciful Father, to imitate constantly the example of the Holy Family, so that, after the trials of this world, we may share their company for ever. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Abraham, Sarah and Isaac… Joseph, Mary and Jesus… two families with wonderful destinations, great hope implanted in the heart and a solid faith! Two families that, like ours, have experienced moments of happiness and tenderness, as well as suffering and difficulties; two families animated by a strong confidence in God, in his love, in his covenant and his promise. Today, we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family and we are invited to confide our own families to the love of God. We must pray and give thanks to God for our families, for the moments of sharing and of helping each other. But we must also pray for families going through difficult moments, for divided families, for those separated from their families due to wars and crisis, for all orphans and all those who cannot experience family life and love. We have to present to God our family projects and dreams. Let us also offer to Christ, who came to join our humanity at Christmas, the life of our parish, that it may be a true family, open, hospitable, generous and dynamic, and that it may also witness to God whose presence and love lighten our New year.

SAINT Anysia
Martyr of Greece. She was a wealthy woman of Salonika, in Thessaly, who used her personal funds to aid the poor. A soldier accosted her in the street and tried to drag her to a pagan sacrifice. Anysia resisted and was killed when the soldier attacked her with his sword.

Meditation
We read today about the prophetess Anna who came by just at the moment of the presentation of Jesus in the Temple and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem. Through our baptism, we are made prophets too like Anna. Her life – never leaving the Temple – teaches us today that we must work to give authority and a solid content to the graces we have received from God. God wants us to be his messengers to our brothers and sisters. If our behaviour towards them is not worthy of love, how will God send us to witness to them? The authority of our Christian identity as prophets comes from God, but is made manifest through our lives as his servants.

Saint roger
Évêque de Cannes, il était mort quelques années plus tôt quand des gens vinrent piller la cathédrale pour emporter les reliques. Ils rapportèrent de leur expédition un coffre de reliques, le trône épiscopal, des vases sacrés et le corps de l’évêque Roger. L’année suivante, ils durent restituer les objets du vol, sauf le corps de l’évêque que son successeur ne considérait pas comme précieux. Les fidèles par contre voulurent rendre ce corps précieux en canonisant Roger et en composant un office.

Alors qu’un profond silence enveloppait toutes choses et que la nuit en était au milieu de son cours, ta Parole toute-puissante, Seigneur, est venue du ciel, ta demeure royale.

Évangile : Lc 2, 36-40
En ce temps-là, quand les parents de Jésus vinrent le présenter au Temple, il y avait aussi une femme prophète, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d’Aser. Elle était très avancée en âge ; après sept ans de mariage, demeurée veuve, elle était arrivée à l’âge de 84 ans. Elle ne s’éloignait pas du Temple, servant Dieu jour et nuit dans le jeûne et la prière. Survenant à cette heure même, elle proclamait les louanges de Dieu et parlait de l’enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient la délivrance de Jérusalem. Lorsqu’ils eurent achevé tout ce que prescrivait la loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent en Galilée, dans leur ville de Nazareth. L’enfant, lui, grandissait et se fortifiait, rempli de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.
Prière sur les offrandes
Reçois favorablement, Seigneur, les offrandes de ton peuple, pour qu’il obtienne dans le mystère eucharistique les biens auxquels il croit de tout son cœur. Par Jésus.
Antienne de la communion
Tous nous avons eu part à la plénitude du Christ : nous avons reçu grâce après grâce.
Prière après la communion
Quand nous allons communier, Seigneur, tu viens à notre rencontre; Produis en nos cœurs le fruit de ce sacrement, car seule ta grâce peut nous préparer à recevoir tes grâces. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Dieu avait juré par serment à Abraham de lui donner une descendance plu nombreuse que le sable au bord de la mer et les étoiles du ciel. Jésus est venu combler les attentes et les promesses de la première Alliance. Tous attendaient cette visite, la prophétesse Anne le révèle aussi comme celui que le peuple attendait. A Noel, Jésus vient accomplir et parfaire la loi ; avec lui nous avons la plénitude de grâce. Jésus est le fruit de l’amour de Dieu. Il est fils du Dieu Amour et c’est lui qui nous permet de connaître ce qui existe depuis le commencement. Il nous est donc impossible de taire ce que nous éprouvons à la nativité de Jésus. Saint Paul dira : « Malheur à moi si je n’annonce pas l’Evangile » (1 Co 9, 16). Anne dans l’Evangile annonce à sa manière la louange du Seigneur. La proximité de Dieu en l’enfant Jésus, nous libère de la solitude qui nous installe dans la convoitise, la concupiscence et de l’arrogance des richesses illusoires de la terre.
