Saint Maurice and the Theban Legion
(d. 287)

Green
Maurice was a native of Egypt. He was conscripted into the Roman army. The emperor ordered his soldiers to offer sacrifice to the Roman gods but the Theban Legion, headed by Maurice, refused. Their allegiance to Christ earned them the crown of martyrdom in the year 287.

O God, who founded all the commands of your sacred Law upon love of you and of our neighbour, grant that, by keeping your precepts, we may merit to attain eternal life. First reading : Ezra 1:1-6
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to fulfil the word of the Lord that was spoken through Jeremiah, the Lord roused the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to issue a proclamation and to have it publicly displayed throughout his kingdom: ‘Thus speaks Cyrus king of Persia, “The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; he has ordered me to build him a Temple in Jerusalem, in Judah. So take care how you hear; for anyone who has will be given more; from anyone who has not, even what he thinks he has will be taken away.’

Meditation
“So take care how you hear”, says Jesus. This admonition prompts my thoughts toward the Use of Time. If I lived to be 70 years old, that is a total of about 25,600 days, and each day has 24 hours or 1,440 minutes! In contemplating this, I reflect on how many of these precious minutes I dedicate to listening to God and, equally important, how engaged I am in the act of listening.

1ère lecture : Am 8,4-7
Écoutez ceci, vous qui écrasez le malheureux pour anéantir les humbles du pays, car vous dites : « Quand donc la fête de la nouvelle lune sera-t-elle passée, pour que nous puissions vendre notre blé ? Quand donc le sabbat sera-t-il fini, pour que nous puissions écouler notre froment ? Nous allons diminuer les mesures, augmenter les prix et fausser les balances. Nous pourrons acheter le faible pour un peu d’argent, le malheureux pour une paire de sandales. Nous vendrons jusqu’aux déchets du froment ! » Le Seigneur le jure par la Fierté de Jacob : Non, jamais je n’oublierai aucun de leurs méfaits.

Des étrangers se sont levés Qui est semblable au Seigneur notre Dieu ? Lui, il siège là-haut. Mais il abaisse son regard vers le ciel et vers la terre.
De la poussière il relève le faible, il retire le pauvre de la cendre pour qu’il siège parmi les princes, parmi les princes de son peuple.
2ème lecture : 1 Tm 2,1-8
J’encourage, avant tout, à faire des demandes, des prières, des intercessions et des actions de grâce pour tous les hommes, pour les chefs d’État et tous ceux qui exercent l’autorité, afin que nous puissions mener notre vie dans la tranquillité et le calme, en toute piété et dignité. Cette prière est bonne et agréable à Dieu notre Sauveur, car il veut que tous les hommes soient sauvés et parviennent à la pleine connaissance de la vérité. En effet, il n’y a qu’un seul Dieu ; il n’y a aussi qu’un seul médiateur entre Dieu et les hommes : un homme, le Christ Jésus, qui s’est donné lui-même en rançon pour tous. Aux temps fixés, il a rendu ce témoignage, pour lequel j’ai reçu la charge de messager et d’apôtre – je dis vrai, je ne mens pas – moi qui enseigne aux nations la foi et la vérité. Je voudrais donc qu’en tout lieu les hommes prient en élevant les mains, saintement, sans colère ni dispute.

Alléluia. Alléluia! Par l’annonce de l’Évangile, Dieu nous appelle à partager la gloire de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ. Alléluia! (cf. 2 Th 2, 14)
Évangile : Lc 16,1-13
Jésus disait encore aux disciples : « Un homme riche avait un gérant qui lui fut dénoncé comme dilapidant ses biens. Il le convoqua et lui dit : “Qu’est-ce que j’apprends à ton sujet ? Rends-moi les comptes de ta gestion, car tu ne peux plus être mon gérant.” Le gérant se dit en lui-même : “Que vais-je faire, puisque mon maître me retire la gestion ? Travailler la terre ? Je n’en ai pas la force. Mendier ? J’aurais honte. Je sais ce que je vais faire, pour qu’une fois renvoyé de ma gérance, des gens m’accueillent chez eux.” Il fit alors venir, un par un, ceux qui avaient des dettes envers son maître. Il demanda au premier : “Combien dois-tu à mon maître ?” Il répondit : “Cent barils d’huile.” Le gérant lui dit : “Voici ton reçu ; vite, assieds-toi et écris cinquante.” Puis il demanda à un autre : “Et toi, combien dois-tu ?” Il répondit : “Cent sacs de blé.” Le gérant lui dit : “Voici ton reçu, écris quatre-vingts.” Le maître fit l’éloge de ce gérant malhonnête car il avait agi avec habileté ; en effet, les fils de ce monde sont plus habiles entre eux que les fils de la lumière. Eh bien moi, je vous le dis : Faites-vous des amis avec l’argent malhonnête, afin que, le jour où il ne sera plus là, ces amis vous accueillent dans les demeures éternelles. Celui qui est digne de confiance dans la moindre chose est digne de confiance aussi dans une grande. Celui qui est malhonnête dans la moindre chose est malhonnête aussi dans une grande. Si donc vous n’avez pas été dignes de confiance pour l’argent malhonnête, qui vous confiera le bien véritable ? Et si, pour ce qui est à autrui, vous n’avez pas été dignes de confiance, ce qui vous revient, qui vous le donnera ? Aucun domestique ne peut servir deux maîtres : ou bien il haïra l’un et aimera l’autre, ou bien il s’attachera à l’un et méprisera l’autre. Vous ne pouvez pas servir à la fois Dieu et l’argent. »

Reçois favorablement, Seigneur, les offrandes de ton peuple, Pour qu’il obtienne dans le mystère eucharistique les biens auxquels il croit de tout son cœur. Par Jésus.

Seigneur, que ton aide accompagne toujours ceux que tu as nourris de tes sacrements, afin qu’ils puissent, dans ces mystères et par toute leur vie, recueillir les fruits de la rédemption. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Peut-on posséder des biens matériels sans pour autant être injuste, malhonnête ? Triste est de constater que l’expérience empirique semble pencher vers une réponse affirmative. Et ce parce que nous ne savons pas être des vrais gérants des biens de la création. Nous nous arrogeons facilement le titre de propriétaire et faisons donc du gaspillage. Là encore, quand Il nous arrive d’être Interpelé, nous cachons notre cupidité par un crime plus grand. Nous pouvons passer d’une mauvaise gestion à un détournement de denier public ; de la tricherie à la corruption. Il aurait suffi que le mauvais gérant reconnaisse son tord et demande pardon et les choses se serait passé autrement. La dureté de l’ouverture des cœurs à la présence de Dieu nécessite que nous prenions du temps pour prier les uns pour les autres. Comme nous le demande Paul, prions encore plus pour tous les gestionnaires des biens temporels.

Then by lowering the bushel, raising the shekel, by swindling and tampering with the scales, we can buy up the poor for money, and the needy for a pair of sandals, and get a price even for the sweepings of the wheat.’ The Lord swears it by the pride of Jacob, ‘Never will I forget a single thing you have done.’

From the dust he lifts up the lowly, from the dungheap he raises the poor to set him in the company of princes, yes, with the princes of his people.
Second reading : 1 Timothy 2:1-8
My advice is that, first of all, there should be prayers offered for everyone – petitions, intercessions and thanksgiving – and especially for kings and others in authority, so that we may be able to live religious and reverent lives in peace and quiet. To do this is right, and will please God our saviour: he wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. For there is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and mankind, himself a man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for them all. He is the evidence of this, sent at the appointed time, and I have been named a herald and apostle of it and – I am telling the truth and no lie – a teacher of the faith and the truth to the pagans. In every place, then, I want the men to lift their hands up reverently in prayer, with no anger or argument.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘There was a rich man and he had a steward denounced to him for being wasteful with his property. He called for the man and said, “What is this I hear about you? Draw me up an account of your stewardship because you are not to be my steward any longer.” Then the steward said to himself, “Now that my master is taking the stewardship from me, what am I to do? Dig? I am not strong enough. Go begging? I should be too ashamed. Ah, I know what I will do to make sure that when I am dismissed from office there will be some to welcome me into their homes.” Then he called his master’s debtors one by one. To the first he said, “How much do you owe my master?” “One hundred measures of oil” was the reply. The steward said, “Here, take your bond; sit down straight away and write fifty.” To another he said, “And you, sir, how much do you owe?” “One hundred measures of wheat” was the reply. The steward said, “Here, take your bond and write eighty.” ‘The master praised the dishonest steward for his astuteness. For the children of this world are more astute in dealing with their own kind than are the children of light. ‘And so I tell you this: use money, tainted as it is, to win you friends, and thus make sure that when it fails you, they will welcome you into the tents of eternity. The man who can be trusted in little things can be trusted in great; the man who is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in great. If then you cannot be trusted with money, that tainted thing, who will trust you with genuine riches? And if you cannot be trusted with what is not yours, who will give you what is your very own? ‘No servant can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.’

Meditation
Lord Jesus, I confess that often I have sought to hear the Good News on behalf of others — for my child, wife, husband, friend — rather than for myself first. In doing so, I may have missed the specific message you have for me in every Bible Encounter. Grant me a true listening ear so that I may hear You more clearly. Help me to recognise your will for my life in every situation.

Religieux de la chartreuse de Londres, il refusa de reconnaître Henri VIII comme seul chef spirituel de l’Eglise d’Angleterre. En 1537, il fut condamné, avec huit autres moines, chartreux comme lui, à l’exécution la plus longue : être trainé sur une claie à travers la ville, de la prison à la potence à moitié étranglé mais respirant encore pour être à nouveau traîné sur une claie de la potence au billot. Enfin, avoir la tête tranchée et être équarri comme un bœuf à l’abattoir.

Le Seigneur est le salut des justes, leur abri au temps de l’angoisse.
Prière d’ouverture
Que la prière des martyrs saint André Kim et Compagnons nous reco,,ande auprès de toi, Seigneur ; qu’elle nous obtienne le courage de rendre témoignage à ta vérité. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : 1 Tm 6, 13-16
Bien-aimé, en présence de Dieu qui donne vie à tous les êtres, et en présence du Christ Jésus qui a témoigné devant Ponce Pilate par une belle affirmation, voici ce que je t’ordonne : garde le commandement du Seigneur, en demeurant sans tache, irréprochable jusqu’à la Manifestation de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ. Celui qui le fera paraître aux temps fixés, c’est Dieu, Souverain unique et bienheureux, Roi des rois et Seigneur des seigneurs ; lui seul possède l’immortalité, habite une lumière inaccessible ; aucun homme ne l’a jamais vu, et nul ne peut le voir. Il en tomba enfin dans la bonne terre, elle poussa et elle donna du fruit au centuple.» Disant cela, il éleva la voix : « Celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, qu’il entende!» Ses disciples lui demandaient ce que signifiait cette parabole. Il leur déclara: « À vous il est donné de connaître les mystères du royaume de Dieu, mais les autres n’ont que les paraboles. Ainsi, comme il est écrit : Ils regardent sans regarder, ils entendent sans comprendre. Voici ce que signifie la parabole. La semence, c’est la parole de Dieu. Il y a ceux qui sont au bord du chemin : ceux-là ont entendu ; puis le diable survient et il enlève de leur cœur la Parole, pour les empêcher de croire et d’être sauvés. Il y a ceux qui sont dans les pierres : lorsqu’ils entendent, ils accueillent la Parole avec joie ; mais ils n’ont pas de racines, ils croient pour un moment et, au moment de l’épreuve, ils abandonnent. Ce qui est tombé dans les ronces, ce sont les gens qui ont entendu, mais qui sont étouffés, chemin faisant, par les soucis, la richesse et les plaisirs de la vie, et ne parviennent pas à maturité. Et ce qui est tombé dans la bonne terre, ce sont les gens qui ont entendu la Parole dans un cœur bon et généreux, qui la retiennent et portent du fruit par leur persévérance. »

Accepte, nous t’en prions, Seigneur, l’offrande que ton peuple te présente pour célébrer tes martyrs saint André Kim et compagnons : qu’elle nous obtienne d’etre fermes dans l’adversité comme elle les a rendus courageux dans la persécution. Par Jésus.

Méditation
La foule qui se rassemble autour de Jésus est hétérogène, cosmopolite. Cela reflète à la fois le caractère universel de la Parole de Dieu, mais aussi la diversité des peuples appelé à être des terres d’accueil de cette Bonne Nouvelle. Force est de voir que l’enthousiasme de l’accueil de la Parole par des peuples ne résistent pas toujours à l’épreuve des soucis et des tentations de l’ennemi. Face aux diverses pressions de notre époque, il n’est pas rare de voir que l’Homme est tenté de tronquer la Parole de Dieu par souci de ce monde. Prions pour que nous soyons et restons des terres d’accueil favorable à l’épanouissement de la Parole de Dieu

17th century Korea fought to stop Christianity by executions. Andrew Kim Taegon, the first Korean priest, who secretly trained in Macao, was executed in 1846. A lay apostle, St Paul Chong Hasang, and many others perished at the same time.
Entrance Antiphon
The blood of the holy Martyrs was poured out for Christ upon the earth; therefore they have gained everlasting rewards.
Collect
O God, who have been pleased to increase your adopted children in all the world, and who made the blood of the Martyrs Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gǒn and his companions a most fruitful seed of Christians, grant that we may be defended by their help and profit always from their example. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

As he sowed, some fell on the edge of the path and was trampled on; and the birds of the air ate it up. Some seed fell on rock, and when it came up it withered away, having no moisture. Some seed fell amongst thorns and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some seed fell into rich soil and grew and produced its crop a hundredfold.’ Saying this he cried, ‘Listen, anyone who has ears to hear!’ His disciples asked him what this parable might mean, and he said, ‘The mysteries of the kingdom of God are revealed to you; for the rest there are only parables, so that they may see but not perceive, listen but not understand. ‘This, then, is what the parable means: the seed is the word of God. Those on the edge of the path are people who have heard it, and then the devil comes and carries away the word from their hearts in case they should believe and be saved. Those on the rock are people who, when they first hear it, welcome the word with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of trial they give up. As for the part that fell into thorns, this is people who have heard, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life and do not reach maturity. As for the part in the rich soil, this is people with a noble and generous heart who have heard the word and take it to themselves and yield a harvest through their perseverance.’

Look with favour, almighty God, on the offerings of your people and, through the intercession of the blessed Martyrs, grant that we ourselves may become a sacrifice acceptable to you for the salvation of all the world. Through Christ our Lord.

Nourished with the food of the valiant as we celebrate the blessed Martyrs, we humbly ask you, O Lord, that, clinging faithfully to Christ, we may labour in the Church for the salvation of all. Through Christ our Lord.

I pray Jesus to open my eyes, allowing me to discern the type of person I am, so that I may make the necessary improvement in my way of loving Jesus
