Jésuite de la deuxième génération, ce Toscan (1542-1621) fut un brillant professeur à Louvain, puis au Collège Romain, où il fut le père spirituel de Louis de Gonzague. A une époque où la controverse avec les protestants battait son plein, il mit ses dons de polémiste au service de l’Église et du pape.

1ère lecture : 1 Timothée 3, 14-16
Bien-aimé, je t’écris avec l’espoir d’aller te voir bientôt. Mais au cas où je tarderais, je veux que tu saches comment il faut se comporter dans la maison de Dieu, c’est-à-dire la communauté, l’Église du Dieu vivant, elle qui est le pilier et le soutien de la vérité. Assurément, il est grand, le mystère de notre religion : c’est le Christ, manifesté dans la chair, justifié dans l’Esprit, apparu aux anges, proclamé dans les nations, cru dans le monde, enlevé dans la gloire !

Noblesse et beauté dans ses actions : à jamais se maintiendra sa justice. De ses merveilles il a laissé un mémorial ; le Seigneur est tendresse et pitié.
Il a donné des vivres à ses fidèles, gardant toujours mémoire de son alliance. Il a montré sa force à son peuple, lui donnant le domaine des nations.

Evangile : Lc 7, 31-35
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à la foule : « À qui donc vais-je comparer les gens de cette génération ? À qui ressemblent-ils ? Ils ressemblent à des gamins assis sur la place, qui s’interpellent en disant : “Nous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n’avez pas dansé. Nous avons chanté des lamentations, et vous n’avez pas pleuré.” Jean le Baptiste est venu, en effet ; il ne mange pas de pain, il ne boit pas de vin, et vous dites : “C’est un possédé !” Le Fils de l’homme est venu ; il mange et il boit, et vous dites : “Voilà un glouton et un ivrogne, un ami des publicains et des pécheurs.” Mais, par tous ses enfants, la sagesse de Dieu a été reconnue juste. »

Sois favorable à nos prières, Seigneur, et reçois avec bonté nos offrandes. Que les dons apportés par chacun à la gloire de ton nom servent au salut de tous. Par Jésus.

Prière après la communion
Que la grâce de cette communion, Seigneur, saisisse nos esprits et nos corps, Afin que son influence, et non pas notre sentiment, domine toujours en nous. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Il est grand le mystère de la foi. Cette expression, nous l’entendons prononcer par le prêtre à chaque Eucharistie. Et nous répondons « c’est le Christ, manifesté dans la chair, justifié dans l’Esprit, apparu aux anges, proclamé dans les nations, cru dans le monde, enlevé dans la gloire ! » Mais avons-nous véritablement conscience des implications de notre réponse à cette anamnèse ? Le psalmiste nous aide à comprendre ceci : « Grandes sont les œuvres du Seigneur ; tous ceux qui les aiment s’en instruisent ». Or, bien souvent au lieu de s’instruire devant le mystère de Dieu dans notre vie, nous sommes plutôt des pleurnichards, des éternels insatisfaits. Notre identité de peuple mis à part pour la sainteté doit être calqué sur le mystère de la vie du Christ. Méditons y.

He was born in Montepulciano, in Tuscany, and became a Jesuit. He wrote two catechisms and some devotional commentaries on the Psalms and on the Seven Last Words.

First reading : 1 Timothy 3:14-16
At the moment of writing to you, I am hoping that I may be with you soon; but in case I should be delayed, I wanted you to know how people ought to behave in God’s family – that is, in the Church of the living God, which upholds the truth and keeps it safe. Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is very deep indeed: He was made visible in the flesh, attested by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed to the pagans, believed in by the world, taken up in glory.

Gospel: Luke 7:31-35
Jesus said to the people: ‘What description can I find for the men of this generation? What are they like? Meditation
In today’s Gospel scene, I am at a loss at which role I would most like to play in this intricate scenery: the children shouting, an observer at the marketplace, John the Baptist, the Son of Man, a glutton, a drunkard, a tax collector, and a sinner. Alternatively, I may desire to take the role of inanimate elements like things in the marketplace – pipes, dirges, bread, or wine. God Almighty, who created me in your image and likeness, I surrender my will to you and seek the wisdom to do only your divine will. Amen.

Pope Saint Cornelius and Saint Cyprian,
Bishop, Martyrs (- 253)

Cornelius was made bishop of the church in Rome in the year 251. He fought against the Novatian schismatics, and established his authority with the aid of Cyprian. The emperor Gallus sent him into exile, and he died at Civitavecchia in June 253. He is buried in Rome.
Entrance Antiphon
The souls of the Saints are rejoicing in heaven, the Saints who followed the footsteps of Christ, and since for love of him they shed their blood, they now exult with Christ for ever.
Collect
O God, who gave Saints Cornelius and Cyprian to your people as diligent shepherds and valiant Martyrs, grant that through their intercession we may be strengthened in faith and constancy and spend ourselves without reserve for the unity of the Church. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: 1 Timothy 3:1-13
Here is a saying that you can rely on: To want to be a presiding elder is to want to do a noble work. That is why the president must have an impeccable character. He must not have been married more than once, and he must be temperate, discreet and courteous, hospitable and a good teacher; not a heavy drinker, nor hot-tempered, but kind and peaceable. He must not be a lover of money. He must be a man who manages his own family well and brings his children up to obey him and be well-behaved: how can any man who does not understand how to manage his own family have responsibility for the church of God? He should not be a new convert, in case pride might turn his head and then he might be condemned as the devil was condemned. It is also necessary that people outside the Church should speak well of him, so that he never gets a bad reputation and falls into the devil’s trap. In the same way, deacons must be respectable men whose word can be trusted, moderate in the amount of wine they drink and with no squalid greed for money. They must be conscientious believers in the mystery of the faith. They are to be examined first, and only admitted to serve as deacons if there is nothing against them. In the same way, the women must be respectable, not gossips but sober and quite reliable. Deacons must not have been married more than once, and must be men who manage their children and families well. Those of them who carry out their duties well as deacons will earn a high standing for themselves and be rewarded with great assurance in their work for the faith in Christ Jesus.

Gospel: Luke 7:11-17
Jesus went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a great number of people. And a considerable number of the townspeople were with her. When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her. ‘Do not cry’ he said. Then he went up and put his hand on the bier and the bearers stood still, and he said, ‘Young man, I tell you to get up.’ And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Everyone was filled with awe and praised God saying, ‘A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people.’ And this opinion of him spread throughout Judaea and all over the countryside.
Prayer over the Offerings
Receive, we pray, O Lord, the offerings of your people in honour of the passion of your holy Martyrs Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, and may the gifts that gave them courage under persecution make us, too, steadfast in all trials. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
‘Do not cry’ says Jesus. I am thrilled to witness the flourishing of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy in the Small Christian Communities (SCC). I express gratitude to God for the miracles unfolding in the Small Christian Communities (SCCs) and Gospel Sharing Units, where many brothers and sisters have encountered others in tears, each with their unique struggles. Following the example of Jesus, they have been able to console and comfort others by concretely wiping away the tears of their crying brothers and sisters. To God alone be the glory!!

saint cyprien, eveque, martyr

Elu en 251, le pape Corneille meurt en exil à Civitavecchia en 253. Dans la lutte qu’il eut à mener contre Novatien, antipape dont le rigorisme refusait la réconciliation des apostats, il fut soutenu par son ami, l’évêque de Carthage. Celui-ci n’était autre que Cyprien (vers 210-258). Ancien avocat, converti du paganisme, il avait été élu évêque en 249.

Les épreuves affluent sur les justes, mais chaque fois le Seigneur les délivre ; il veille sur chacun de leurs os, pas un ne sera brisé.
Prière d’ouverture
Seigneur, tu as donné à ton peuple, dans les saints Corneille et Cyprien, des pasteurs dévoués et d’invincibles martyrs ; à leur prière, fortifie notre courage et notre foi, et accorde-nous de travailler avec empressement pour l’unité de l’Église. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : 1Tm 3, 1-13
Voici une parole digne de foi : si quelqu’un aspire à la responsabilité d’une communauté, c’est une belle tâche qu’il désire. Le responsable doit être irréprochable, époux d’une seule femme, un homme sobre, raisonnable, équilibré, accueillant, capable d’enseigner, ni buveur ni brutal mais bienveillant, ni querelleur ni cupide. Il faut qu’il dirige bien les gens de sa propre maison, qu’il obtienne de ses enfants l’obéissance et se fasse respecter. Car si quelqu’un ne sait pas diriger sa propre maison, comment pourrait-il prendre en charge une Église de Dieu ? Il ne doit pas être un nouveau converti ; sinon, aveuglé par l’orgueil, il pourrait tomber sous la même condamnation que le diable. Il faut aussi que les gens du dehors portent sur lui un bon témoignage, pour qu’il échappe au mépris des hommes et au piège du diable. Les diacres, eux aussi, doivent être dignes de respect, n’avoir qu’une parole, ne pas s’adonner à la boisson, refuser les profits malhonnêtes, garder le mystère de la foi dans une conscience pure. On les mettra d’abord à l’épreuve ; ensuite, s’il n’y a rien à leur reprocher, ils serviront comme diacres. Les femmes, elles aussi, doivent être dignes de respect, ne pas être médisantes, mais sobres et fidèles en tout. Que le diacre soit l’époux d’une seule femme, qu’il mène bien ses enfants et sa propre famille. Les diacres qui remplissent bien leur ministère obtiennent ainsi une position estimable et beaucoup d’assurance grâce à leur foi au Christ Jésus.

Acclamez le Seigneur, terre entière, servez le Seigneur dans l’allégresse, venez à lui avec des chants de joie!

Évangile : Lc 7, 11-17
En ce temps-là, Jésus se rendit dans une ville appelée Naïm. Ses disciples faisaient route avec lui, ainsi qu’une grande foule. Il arriva près de la porte de la ville au moment où l’on emportait un mort pour l’enterrer; c’était un fils unique, et sa mère était veuve. Une foule importante de la ville accompagnait cette femme. Voyant celle-ci, le Seigneur fut saisi de compassion pour elle et lui dit: « Ne pleure pas. » Il s’approcha et toucha le cercueil ; les porteurs s’arrêtèrent, et Jésus dit : « Jeune homme, je te l’ordonne, lève-toi. » Alors le mort se redressa et se mit à parler. Et Jésus le rendit à sa mère. La crainte s’empara de tous, et ils rendaient gloire à Dieu en disant : « Un grand prophète s’est levé parmi nous, et Dieu a visité son peuple. » Et cette parole sur Jésus se répandit dans la Judée entière et dans toute la région.
Prière sur les offrandes
Accepte, nous t’en prions, Seigneur, l’offrande que ton peuple te présente pour célébrer la passion de tes martyrs; qu’elle nous obtienne d’être fermes dans l’adversité, comme elle rendit courageux dans la persécution les saints Corneille et Cyprien. Par Jésus.

Le Fils de l’homme n’est pas venu pour être servi, mais pour servir et donner sa vie en rançon pour la multitude.
Prière après la communion
Par le sacrement que nous avons reçu de toi, Seigneur, accorde-nous cette grâce : puissions-nous, à l’exemple des saints Corneille et Cyprien, être forts de la force de ton Esprit, afin de rendre témoignage à la vérité de l’Évangile. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Ce qui ferait plaisir à Dieu est que les membres du peuple chrétien soient capables d’accompagner par leur présence ceux qui sont dans la peine. Si la mort est une réalité existentielle, elle a besoin d’être bien accompagnée afin qu’elle ne laisse pas les vivants dans un désarroi interminable. Il est certes clair qu’il est compréhensible que dans un monde où l’individualisme et l’indifférence sont grandissantes, il nous arrive d’oublier l’exigence de la compassion chrétienne. Jésus vient nous rappeler qu’en tant que chrétien, nous devons sentir le besoin les uns les autres. Et selon nos capacités offrir à celui qui souffre ce qui pourrait conduire tout le peuple à rendre gloire à Dieu. Jésus ressuscite le mort. N’avons-nous pas selon nos responsabilités de quoi donner à nos sœurs et frères dans le besoin ? Que la lumière de cette Eucharistie nous donne la claire vision de ce qu’on doit faire et la force de l’accomplir.

The Seven Sorrows (or Dolors) are events in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary which are a popular devotion .The Mass today focuses on Mary’s compassion and what she suffered during the first Passiontide.
Entrance Antiphon : Lk 2: 34-35
Simeon said to Mary: Behold, this child is destined for the ruin and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign of contradiction; and your own soul a sword will pierce.
Collect
O God, who willed that, when your Son was lifted high on the Ccoss, his Mother should stand close by and share his suffering, grant that your Church, participating with the Virgin Mary in the Passion of Christ, may merit a share in his resurrection. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 1 Timothy 2:1-8
My advice is that, first of all, there should be prayers offered for everyone – petitions, intercessions and thanksgiving – and especially for kings and others in authority, so that we may be able to live religious and reverent lives in peace and quiet. To do this is right, and will please God our saviour: he wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. For there is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and mankind, himself a man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for them all. He is the evidence of this, sent at the appointed time, and I have been named a herald and apostle of it and – I am telling the truth and no lie – a teacher of the faith and the truth to the pagans. In every place, then, I want the men to lift their hands up reverently in prayer, with no anger or argument.

Receive, O merciful God, to the praise of your name the prayers and sacrificial offerings which we bring to you as we venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom you graciously gave to us as a most devoted Mother when she stood by the Cross of Jesus. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

Rejoice when you share in the sufferings of Christ, that you may also rejoice exultantly when his glory is revealed.
Prayer after Communion
Having received the Sacrament of eternal redemption, we humbly ask, O Lord, that, honouring how the Blessed Virgin Mary suffered with her Son, we may complete in ourselves for the Church’s sake what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
When Jesus tells John, “This is your mother,” I recognise the need to reassess my relationship with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, as well as with my own Mother, as Jesus has also entrusted Her to me. Specifically, I contemplate making my recitation of the Rosary more meaningful by delving deeper into meditation of its mysteries. I am reminded of a reading where Our Lady, in one of her apparitions, told Saint Dominic de Guzman: “I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the Advocates of the Rosary shall have for Intercessors the entire Celestial Court during their life and at the hour of death.”
