St. Catherine de Ricci (1522 – 1589)

Catherine was born Alexandrina in 1522 in Florence, Italy. Catherine entered a convent at Prat in Tuscany and became known for her great sanctity. She is known for her “Ecstasy of the Passion, which she experienced from noon on Thursday till four o’clock on Friday.

R/     O Lord, you have been our refuge from one generation to the next.

 

1.      Before the mountains were born or the earth or the world brought forth, you are God, without beginning or end.

Gospel : Mark 8:1-10

A great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat. If I send them off home hungry they will collapse on the way; some have come a great distance.’ His disciples replied, ‘Where could anyone get bread to feed these people in a deserted place like this?’ He asked them, ‘How many loaves have you?’ ‘Seven’ they said. Then he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them among the crowd. They had a few small fish as well, and over these he said a blessing and ordered them to be distributed also. They ate as much as they wanted, and they collected seven baskets full of the scraps left over. Now there had been about four thousand people. He sent them away and immediately, getting into the boat with his disciples, went to the region of Dalmanutha.

Meditation

Despair: Where can we find enough food to feed these people? Sometimes we all get to this point when it is logically impossible to do anything. Remaining here cuts any possibility of progress.

Hope: what do you have? This is what the Load always asks of us when things appear bleak. He needs you to bring up something.

Faith: Seven loaves. For every situation, there is always something we have left, something you discover within you. It is this thing that the Lord takes from our situation and makes great.

St. Buonfiglio Monaldo.

Buonfiglio is one of the several Florentine founders of the Servite Order (Servants of Mary) who took up a life of solitude and prayer. These founders were canonised in 1887 by Pope Leo XIII.

He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, put his fingers into the man’s ears and touched his tongue with spittle. Then looking up to heaven he sighed; and he said to him, ‘Ephphatha’, that is, ‘Be opened.’ And his ears were opened, and the ligament of his tongue was loosened and he spoke clearly. And Jesus ordered them to tell no one about it, but the more he insisted, the more widely they published it. Their admiration was unbounded. ‘He has done all things well,’ they said, ‘he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.’

Meditation

Jesus does a remarkable thing:;he takes the man away from the crowd. It is, in almost all cases, important to find ourselves with the Lord, we must be away from the crowd. The faith of others is good for us, but our personal experience serves us better in strengthening the faith we have received. Decapolis was a gentile dominated territory. The Israelites saw the world of faith in two ways: the chosen people, and the gentiles. The mission of Jesus affects both worlds, giving each a chance to feel the presence of God.

Saint Félix

Il fut sacré archevêque de Bourges par Saint Germain de Paris vers 568. Pendant sept ans environ il gouverna très saintement son Eglise. Avec les autres métropolitains du royaume de Bourgogne, il prit part au quatrième concile de Paris et signa les lettres synodales destinées à Aegidius, archevêque de Reims, et au roi Sigebert. Grégoire de Tours fait son éloge lorsqu’il raconte qu’après sa mort, sur la dalle qui recouvrait son tombeau, un aveugle recouvra la vue.  Par ce signe, le peuple reconnut qu’aveuglé jusqu’ici par les séductions du monde, il n’avait pas mérité de reconnaître combien Félix depuis son vivant avait été l’ami de Dieu.

Première lecture : Génèse 3, 1-8

Le serpent était le plus rusé de tous les animaux des champs que le Seigneur Dieu avait faits.

Il dit à la femme : « Alors, Dieu vous a vraiment dit : “Vous ne mangerez d’aucun arbre du jardin” » La femme répondit au serpent : « Nous mangeons les fruits des arbres du jardin. Mais, pour le fruit de l’arbre qui est au milieu du jardin, Dieu a dit : “Vous n’en mangerez pas, vous n’y toucherez pas, sinon vous mourrez.” » Le serpent dit à la femme :« Pas du tout ! Vous ne mourrez pas ! Mais Dieu sait que, le jour où vous en mangerez, vos yeux s’ouvriront, et vous serez comme des dieux, connaissant le bien et le mal. » La femme s’aperçut que le fruit de l’arbre devait être savoureux, qu’il était agréable à regarder et qu’il était désirable, cet arbre, puisqu’il donnait l’intelligence. Elle prit de son fruit, et en mangea. Elle en donna aussi à son mari, et il en mangea. Alors leurs yeux à tous deux s’ouvrirent et ils se rendirent compte qu’ils étaient nus. Ils attachèrent les unes aux autres des feuilles de figuier, et ils s’en firent des pagnes. Ils entendirent la voix du Seigneur Dieu qui se promenait dans le jardin à la brise du jour. L’homme et sa femme allèrent se cacher aux regards du Seigneur Dieu parmi les arbres du jardin.

Évangile : Marc 7, 31-37

En ce temps-là, Jésus quitta le territoire de Tyr ; passant par Sidon, il prit la direction de la mer de Galilée et alla en plein territoire de la Décapole. Des gens lui amènent un sourd qui avait aussi de la difficulté à parler, et supplient Jésus de poser la main sur lui. Jésus l’emmena à l’écart, loin de la foule, lui mit les doigts dans les oreilles, et, avec sa salive, lui toucha la langue. Puis, les yeux levés au ciel, il soupira et lui dit: « Effata ! », c’est-à-dire : « Ouvre-toi!» Ses oreilles s’ouvrirent ; sa langue se délia, et il parlait correctement. Alors Jésus leur ordonna de n’en rien dire à personne;  mais plus il leur donnait cet ordre, plus ceux-ci le proclamaient. Extrêmement frappés, ils disaient :« Il a bien fait toutes choses : il fait entendre les sourds et parler les muets.

Seigneur notre Dieu, tu as voulu choisir dans ta création le pain et le vin qui refont chaque jour nos forces: Fais qu’ils deviennent aussi pour nous le sacrement de la vie éternelle. Par Jésus.

Méditation

Dans la première lecture tirée du livre de la genèse, il est question de la désobéissance d’Adam et Eve qui, sous l’influence de l’esprit du mal se détournent de la volonté de Dieu. A partir de ce moment, l’humanité est plongée dans le péché qui l’éloigne de son créateur. En effet, le péché créé entre nous et le Dieu un fossé qui s’agrandit davantage au fur et à mesure que nous y demeurons. Face à Dieu qui vient à notre rencontre, l’attitude à tenir ne doit pas être la fuite, mais plutôt aller aussi à sa rencontre. Car, le Seigneur dans son immense amour vient à la rencontre de l’homme pour le relever et lui redonner la dignité d’enfant de Dieu. De ce fait, l’épisode de la guérison du sourd-muet en plein territoire de la décapole relaté dans l’Evangile témoigne de l’amour sans limite de Dieu pour son peuple que nous sommes.

Now the woman was a pagan, by birth a Syrophoenician, and she begged him to cast the devil out of her daughter. And he said to her, ‘The children should be fed first, because it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.’ But she spoke up: ‘Ah yes, sir,’ she replied, ‘but the house-dogs under the table can eat the children’s scraps.’ And he said to her, ‘For saying this, you may go home happy: the devil has gone out of your daughter.’ So she went off to her home and found the child lying on the bed and the devil gone.’

Meditation

We learn from this woman’s humility. In some cases, we stoop to conquer. However, this passage serves as a way of opening Jesus’ mission to the gentile world. Being the case, we then see that Jesus’s words to the woman indicate something else. It is most often the case that when we need certain favours from God, we suddenly find ourselves in conditions that we might not perceive to be God’s work. For example, a man seeking to rid himself of impatience, suddenly finds himself having to lead a group of young people.

Notre Dame de Lourdes

Le message de Lourdes, qui est appel à la conversion et à la prière, fait écho à celui de Jésus dans l’Evangile. A la fin de ses apparitions à Bernadette (1858), Marie se nomme ‘’l’Immaculée Conception’’, pour souligner que tout, en elle, est un don de l’Amour qui l’a gratuitement choisi. Par la voix de l’humble bergère, elle nous invite à prier avec une confiance inlassable, afin de nous ouvrir comme elle à l’Amour qui veut nous sauver. Les guérisons que le Seigneur accorde aux pèlerins, à la prière de sa mère, sont le signe de cette volonté de salut. Il s’agit moins d’admirer ces miracles que d’être des témoins fidèles de l’amour qui s’y révèle.

Lecture du livre de la Genèse Le Seigneur Dieu dit : « Il n’est pas bon que l’homme soit seul.

Je vais lui faire une aide qui lui correspondra. » Avec de la terre, le Seigneur Dieu modela toutes les bêtes des champs et tous les oiseaux du ciel, et il les amena vers l’homme pour voir quels noms il leur donnerait. C’étaient des êtres vivants, et l’homme donna un nom à chacun. L’homme donna donc leurs noms à tous les animaux, aux oiseaux du ciel et à toutes les bêtes des champs. Mais il ne trouva aucune aide qui lui corresponde. Alors le Seigneur Dieu fit tomber sur lui un sommeil mystérieux, et l’homme s’endormit. Le Seigneur Dieu prit une de ses côtes, puis il referma la chair à sa place. Avec la côte qu’il avait prise à l’homme, il façonna une femme et il l’amena vers l’homme. L’homme dit alors: « Cette fois-ci, voilà l’os de mes os et la chair de ma chair ! On l’appellera femme – Ishsha –, elle qui fut tirée de l’homme – Ish. » À cause de cela, l’homme quittera son père et sa mère, il s’attachera à sa femme, et tous deux ne feront plus qu’un. Tous les deux, l’homme et sa femme, étaient nus, et ils n’en éprouvaient aucune honte l’un devant l’autre.

R/ Heureux qui craint le Seigneur ! (127, 1a)

 

1.  Heureux qui craint le Seigneur et marche selon ses voies ! Tu te nourriras du travail de tes mains : Heureux es-tu ! À toi, le bonheur !

2.    Ta femme sera dans ta maison comme une vigne généreuse, et tes fils, autour de la table, comme des plants d’olivier.

3.  Voilà comment sera béni l’homme qui craint le Seigneur. De Sion, que le Seigneur te bénisse ! Tu verras le bonheur de Jérusalem tous les jours de ta vie.

Évangile : Marc 7, 24-30

En ce temps-là, Jésus partit et se rendit dans le territoire de Tyr. Il était entré dans une maison, et il ne voulait pas qu’on le sache, mais il ne put rester inaperçu: une femme entendit aussitôt parler de lui ; elle avait une petite fille possédée par un esprit impur; elle vint se jeter à ses pieds. Cette femme était païenne, syro-phénicienne de naissance, et elle lui demandait d’expulser le démon hors de sa fille. Il lui disait : « Laisse d’abord les enfants se rassasier, car il n’est pas bien de prendre le pain des enfants et de le jeter aux petits chiens. » Mais elle lui répliqua : « Seigneur, les petits chiens, sous la table, mangent bien les miettes des petits enfants ! » Alors il lui dit: « À cause de cette parole, va : le démon est sorti de ta fille. » Elle rentra à la maison, et elle trouva l’enfant étendue sur le lit : le démon était sorti d’elle.

Méditation

« L’homme quittera son père et sa mère, il s’attachera à sa femme, et tous deux ne feront plus qu’un. » Par ces mots le Seigneur nous révèle l’indissolubilité du mariage ainsi que l’unité et la fidélité qui doit régner entre les conjoints. La femme est faite pour l’homme et l’homme pour la femme. L’appel nous est donc lancé de revoir nos relations affectives dans notre société où de plus en plus est prôné le mariage homosexuel. Dans l’Evangile, avec la guérison de la fille de la femme syro-phénicienne, Jésus démontre qu’il n’est pas seulement le messie attendu par Israël, mais bien plus. Il est le sauveur de tous les peuples, de tout homme qui croit en sa parole, qui met en lui sa foi, son espérance..
