Saint Anicetus
White
Anicetus was a Syrian from Emesa. He became pope about 155. He actively opposed Marcionism and Gnosticism.

Be present to your family, O Lord, we pray, and graciously ensure those you have endowed with the grace of faith, an eternal share in the Resurrection of your Only Begotten Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 8:1-8
That day a bitter persecution started against the Church in Jerusalem, and everyone except the apostles fled to the country districts of Judaea and Samaria. There were some devout people, however, who buried Stephen and made great mourning for him. Saul then worked for the total destruction of the Church; he went from house to house arresting both men and women and sending them to prison. Those who had escaped went from place to place preaching the Good News. One of them was Philip who went to a Samaritan town and proclaimed the Christ to them. The people united in welcoming the message Philip preached, either because they had heard of the miracles he worked or because they saw them for themselves. There were, for example, unclean spirits that came shrieking out of many who were possessed, and several paralytics and cripples were cured. As a result there was great rejoicing in that town.

Meditation
Jesus is our Bread of Life because first, He offers Himself as our spiritual food, producing God’s very life within us. Second, He promises unbroken friendship and freedom from the fear of being removed from God. Third, He offers us the hope of sharing in His resurrection. Faith is the most essential requirement for those who want to follow Him. Faith is the appropriate response that shows our acceptance of Jesus as the Bread of Life. Trusting in the message of Jesus is rewarding. There are many cures for so many ailments in Samaria because of faith.

Saint Bernadette Soubirous
(1844 – 1879)
White
She was born in 1844 to a destitute family in Lourdes, in France. On 11 February 1858 she received the first of a series of visions of the Mother of God which led to Lourdes becoming a place of pilgrimage and healing. In 1866 she became a nun at Nevers, where she died on 16 April 1879.

Meditation
Signs and wonders highly attract human beings. Many people watch them with lots of pleasure. Because of this, the devil has placed the greatest temptation on the way of Christians around that. Someone needs to have the power to perform some strange things, such as laying his hands on people and they fall, foretelling the future, healing a few illnesses, and he will record the most fantastic following. No wonder Jesus refuses in today’s Gospel to bow to the people’s demand for a miracle. « What sign will you give to show us that we should believe in you?» Like Jesus in the Gospel, the Catholic Church is very slow to perform signs and wonders. The devil is at work. Jesus had warned that many would come claiming to be from him, but they were wolves in sheepskin. Let us pray for the grace to believe in God even without signs.

Saint Paternus
White
He is the first saint of the 5th century. He followed his father’s path by becoming a hermit in Wales. He was known for his preaching, charity and mortifications.

First reading : Acts 6:8-15
Stephen was filled with grace and power and began to work miracles and great signs among the people. But then certain people came forward to debate with Stephen, some from Cyrene and Alexandria who were members of the synagogue called the Synagogue of Freedmen, and others from Cilicia and Asia. They found they could not get the better of him because of his wisdom, and because it was the Spirit that prompted what he said. So they procured some men to say, ‘We heard him using blasphemous language against Moses and against God.’ Having in this way turned the people against him as well as the elders and Scribes, they took Stephen by surprise, and arrested him and brought him before the Sanhedrin. There they put up false witnesses to say, ‘This man is always making speeches against this Holy Place and the Law. We have heard him say that Jesus the Nazarene is going to destroy this Place and alter the traditions that Moses handed down to us.’ The members of the Sanhedrin all looked intently at Stephen, and his face appeared to them like the face of an angel.

After Jesus had fed the five thousand, his disciples saw him walking on the water. Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves. Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten. When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats and crossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus. When they found him on the other side, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ Jesus answered: ‘I tell you most solemnly, you are not looking for me because you have seen the signs but because you had all the bread you wanted to eat. Do not work for food that cannot last, but work for food that endures to eternal life, the kind of food the Son of Man is offering you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.’ Then they said to him, ‘What must we do if we are to do the works that God wants?’ Jesus gave them this answer, ‘This is working for God: you must believe in the one he has sent.’

Grant us, we pray, almighty God, that the true divinity of your Only Begotten Son, which we firmly profess with Saint Athanasius, may, through this Sacrament, ever give us life and protection. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
“…you are not looking for me because you have seen the signs but because you had all the bread you wanted to eat…”. Jesus is inviting us to strive for higher realities. He insists: “Do not work for food that cannot last, but work for food that endures to eternal life…” The invitation to strive for higher realities is constant in practically all religions. Christianity captures this in the Sermon on the Mount: “Seek first the Kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given you besides” (Matt 6:33). We are constantly advised to desire and work for things that truly count. This is part of the genuine wisdom throughout human history. Plato urged his disciples to love the “eternal ideas” and to reject mere shadows. In decadent times people prefer only entertainment and light literature. In the Church, we should weep when preachers use the pulpit only to entertain, gauging the “success” of the homily by the number of times the people laugh. “Work for food…that endures to eternal life.”

The disciples told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised Jesus at the breaking of bread. They were still talking about all this when Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you!’ In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said, ‘Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts rising in your hearts? Look at my hands and feet; yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have.’ And as he said this he showed them his hands and feet. Their joy was so great that they still could not believe it, and they stood there dumbfounded; so he said to them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’ And they offered him a piece of grilled fish, which he took and ate before their eyes. Then he told them, ‘This is what I meant when I said, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms has to be fulfilled.’ He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, ‘So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. Meditation
The Emmaus disciples recount their encounter with the Risen One and how they recognised him while sharing bread with the rest of their companions, the community, when Jesus arrives again, greeting them and promising them PEACE. The disciples were consequently troubled and perplexed by Jesus’ terrible death and «rumoured» resurrection. His gift, which overcame all of these difficulties, was PEACE. Peace dispels doubt and drives anxiety away. Today, Jesus offers us this serenity: the peace that knows no boundaries, the joy that knows no fear. A person who has found inner peace has already risen with Christ. The previous doubts and worries vanish because Jesus «opened their minds» so they could grasp the Scriptures and how much they knew about Him. So, one by one, the Spirit of the Risen Jesus enlightens their companions’ brains and hearts and converts them – like Peter – into powerful witnesses of the Good News.

Saint Martin I (- 655)
Pope, Martyr

He was born in Todi in Umbria and elected Pope in 649. He called a synod to combat the Monothelite heresy concerning the nature of Christ. He died on in 655.
Entrance Antiphon
O chosen people, proclaim the mighty works of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light, alleluia.
Collect
Set aside, O Lord, the bond of sentence written for us by the law of sin, which in the Paschal Mystery you cancelled through the Resurrection of Christ your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 6:1-7
About this time, when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenists made a complaint against the Hebrews: in the daily distribution their own widows were being overlooked. So the Twelve called a full meeting of the disciples and addressed them, ‘It would not be right for us to neglect the word of God so as to give out food; you, brothers, must select from among yourselves seven men of good reputation, filled with the Spirit and with wisdom; we will hand over this duty to them, and continue to devote ourselves to prayer and to the service of the word.’ The whole assembly approved of this proposal and elected Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, together with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. The word of the Lord continued to spread: the number of disciples in Jerusalem was greatly increased, and a large group of priests made their submission to the faith.

Gospel : John 6:16-21
In the evening the disciples went down to the shore of the lake and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the lake. It was getting dark by now and Jesus had still not rejoined them. The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough. They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the lake and coming towards the boat. This frightened them, but he said, ‘It is I. Do not be afraid.’ They were for taking him into the boat, but in no time it reached the shore at the place they were making for.

Sanctify graciously these gifts, O Lord, we pray, and, accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice, make of us an eternal offering to you. Through Christ our Lord.

We have partaken of the gifts of this sacred mystery, humbly imploring, O Lord, that what your Son commanded us to do in memory of him may bring us growth in charity. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The disciples were scared when they saw Jesus walking on water approaching them. They thought he was a ghost. They soon discovered that their master was also the master of nature. As the master of nature, he controls all of nature’s troubles, including the storm at sea when the disciples rowed the boat. «It is I. Do not be afraid,» he said, and the sea calmed down. When the Twelve became terrified after watching Jesus walk on the water, Jesus comforted them with these words. He was practically saying to them, «Trust me!» We must walk with unwavering trust in the Church and this world. Invite Jesus into your boat, and any difficulty you think you have, no matter how bad it appears, will vanish for good, just like the storm that plagued the disciples. If you can hear his voice amid life’s storms and respond appropriately, you will find peace that the world cannot provide. When foreign and internal crises endanger our communities, the readings today give us hope. In difficult times, Jesus is with us. Nothing is too complicated for us to master with him!

Saint Zeno of Verona
(d. 371)
White
Zeno, a native of North Africa, was appointed bishop of Verona (Northern Italy) in 362. He preached much against Arianism and fostered the growth of missionary activity in his area. He died in 371.

Here is a wise virgin, from among the number of the prudent, who went forth with lighted lamp to meet Christ, alleluia.

O God, who set Saint Catherine of Siena on fire with divine love in her contemplation of the Lord’s Passion and her service of your Church, grant, through her intercession, that your people, participating in the mystery of Christ, may ever exult in the revelation of his glory. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 5:34-42
One member of the Sanhedrin, a Pharisee called Gamaliel, who was a doctor of the Law and respected by the whole people, stood up and asked to have the apostles taken outside for a time. Then he addressed the Sanhedrin, ‘Men of Israel, be careful how you deal with these people. There was Theudas who became notorious not so long ago. He claimed to be someone important, and he even collected about four hundred followers; but when he was killed, all his followers scattered and that was the end of them. And then there was Judas the Galilean, at the time of the census, who attracted crowds of supporters; but he got killed too, and all his followers dispersed. What I suggest, therefore, is that you leave these men alone and let them go. If this enterprise, this movement of theirs, is of human origin it will break up of its own accord; but if it does in fact come from God you will not only be unable to destroy them, but you might find yourselves fighting against God.’ His advice was accepted; and they had the apostles called in, gave orders for them to be flogged, warned them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them. And so they left the presence of the Sanhedrin glad to have had the honour of suffering humiliation for the sake of the name. They preached every day both in the Temple and in private houses, and their proclamation of the Good News of Christ Jesus was never interrupted.

Gospel : John 6:1-15
Jesus went off to the other side of the Sea of Galilee – or of Tiberias – and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he gave by curing the sick. Jesus climbed the hillside, and sat down there with his disciples. It was shortly before the Jewish feast of Passover. Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, ‘Where can we buy some bread for these people to eat?’ He only said this to test Philip; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do. Philip answered, ‘Two hundred denarii would only buy enough to give them a small piece each.’ One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said, ‘There is a small boy here with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that between so many?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Make the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass there, and as many as five thousand men sat down. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all who were sitting ready; he then did the same with the fish, giving out as much as was wanted. When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, ‘Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing gets wasted.’ So they picked them up, and filled twelve hampers with scraps left over from the meal of five barley loaves. The people, seeing this sign that he had given, said, ‘This really is the prophet who is to come into the world.’ Jesus, who could see they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, escaped back to the hills by himself.

May the heavenly table at which we have been fed, O Lord, confer eternal life upon us, as even in this world it nourished the life of Saint Catherine. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The people in our Gospel yearn for God’s word of life, which may nurture them spiritually. They, too, are hungry for material nourishment. The miracle of satisfying both hungers is predicated on the people’s earnest desire to listen to Christ, the charity of the small boy in offering his five loaves and two fish, and the generosity of Christ in offering the people’s hunger to God. «Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness,» Jesus stated in Matthew 6:33, «and all other things shall be added unto you.» In today’s Gospel, the people who came to listen to Jesus did just that: they came not to eat but to hear Jesus’ wisdom. When nighttime arrived, Jesus realised they were famished. They didn’t go to him whining about hunger; he knew and decided to feed them. We were told that t<hey ate and were satisfied – 5,000 men, not including women and children. This is what occurs to those who honestly seek Christ’s face. He anticipates our needs before we do. He will always provide for us as long as we seek him, follow him, walk in his footsteps, and learn from him. He will never let us go hungry or thirsty.
