Mary queen and mother,
SAINT John Kemble
Pope Pius XII, in the Marian Year, 1954, instituted the Feast of the Queenship of Mary. The formal declaration of Mary’s Queenship was exactly one-hundred years since the definition of Mary’s Immaculate Conception. Mary’s queenship is a share in Jesus’ kingship. In the fourth century Saint Ephrem called Mary “Lady” and “Queen.” The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption, and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast.

Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff in his hand and touched the meat and unleavened cakes. Fire sprang from the rock and consumed the meat and unleavened cakes, and the angel of the Lord vanished before his eyes. Then Gideon knew this was the angel of the Lord, and he said, “Alas, my Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!” the Lord answered him, “Peace be with you; have no fear; you will not die.” Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it The-Lord-is-Peace.

I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace, peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts.
Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven.
The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps.

Jesus gazed at them. “For men,” he told them, “this is impossible; for God everything is possible.” Then Peter spoke. “What about us?” he said to him. “We have left everything and followed you. As we observe this Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we bring you our offerings, O Lord, praying to be given strength by the humanity of Christ, who offered himself to you on the Cross as the unblemished oblation. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

Having received this heavenly Sacrament, we humbly pray, O Lord, that we, who reverently celebrate the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may merit to be partakers at your eternal banquet. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The rich have more difficulty entering the Kingdom of Heaven than those who have little because the former tend to rely on their wealth and not on God. We are very inclined to putting our security in what we have; we value what is human more than what is divine. This also applies to our spiritual wealth. If we rely on our prayers and good works to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, we may be in for a big surprise. They will not get us to first place! We are saved by God’s grace given to us because God is good, not because we have some goodness of our own, independent of God.

Let your wish be granted.” And from that moment her daughter was well again.

Meditation
What an extraordinary story! While the woman remains firm, it is Jesus who seems to change his mind. First he ignores her, she insists, he rebuffs her in a hurtful way. But then this is only to make known her extraordinary faith. What faith! She is a woman who could not be more foreign, she is from a tribe hostile to the Jews. Despite the snubs, she is tenacious and persists in her request to heal her daughter. She defies the narrowness of a tradition that limited God’s mercy to the chosen few, and she is generously rewarded. The crowd and the apostles learned that day that the Lord came for all, Jews and non-Jews alike. How often do I judge people too quickly?

Saint Helena
She was a native of Bithynia, who married the then Roman general Constantius I. She converted to Christianity and performed many acts of charity, including building churches in Rome and in the Holy Land.

Meditation
This is not an easy text to hear in these times when marriage is so fragile, when people recoil from the lifelong commitment of marriage, and when divorce rates are rising everywhere. Yet it is clear that Jesus stands for a committed marriage and is against divorce. May we, together with Pope Francis, consider those living through difficult situations and further integrate them “into Christian communities in the variety of ways possible, while avoiding any occasion of scandal… (so that they may come) not only to realize that they belong to the Church as the body of Christ, but also… have a joyful and fruitful experience in it.” (Amoris Laetitia no. 299)

Saint Clare of Montefalco
Saint Clare of Montefalco (1268 – 1308), also called Saint Clare of the Cross, was an Augustinian nun and abbess. Before becoming a nun, St. Clare was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis (Secular).She was canonized by Pope Leo XIII on December 8, 1881.

As soon as the bearers of the ark reached the Jordan and the feet of the priests who carried it touched the waters (the Jordan overflows the whole length of its banks throughout the harvest season) the upper waters stood still and made one heap over a wide space – from Adam to the fortress of Zarethan – while those flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah, that is, the Salt Sea, stopped running altogether. The people crossed opposite Jericho. The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood still on dry ground in mid-Jordan, and all Israel continued to cross dry-shod till the whole nation had finished its crossing of the river.

At this, the servant threw himself down at his master’s feet. “Give me time,” he said, “and I will pay the whole sum.” And the servant’s master felt so sorry for him that he let him go and cancelled the debt. Now as this servant went out, he happened to meet a fellow servant who owed him one hundred denarii; and he seized him by the throat and began to throttle him. “Pay what you owe me”, he said. His fellow servant fell at his feet and implored him, saying, “Give me time and I will pay you.” But the other would not agree; on the contrary, he had him thrown into prison till he should pay the debt. His fellow servants were deeply distressed when they saw what had happened, and they went to their master and reported the whole affair to him. Then the master sent for him. “You wicked servant!” he said. “I cancelled all that debt of yours when you appealed to me. Were you not bound, then, to have pity on your fellow servant just as I had pity on you?” And in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers till he should pay all his debt. And that is how my heavenly Father will deal with you unless you each forgive your brother from your heart.” Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and he left Galilee and came into the part of Judaea which is on the far side of the Jordan.

Meditation
Forgiveness is always a complicated process that requires time and reflection. Yet it is an obligation that Jesus considers essential for his disciples, and he never misses an opportunity to stress its importance. Here, he tells Peter, and us, that there is no limit to the number of times we must forgive. He reminds us that we can only receive forgiveness if we are able to give it to others. The heart that thinks only in terms of right and wrong, deaf to the calls of mercy, is a heart that does not understand forgiveness when it is offered. May we be able to dispose our hearts both to give and to receive forgiveness.

SAINT Stephen of Hungary
He was the son of a pagan father and a Christian mother. He worked hard for the conversion of his country to Christianity, setting up both episcopal sees and monasteries. He was crowned the first King of Hungary in 1001.

Meditation
Correcting others when they are wrong is never easy, and in these days of relativism and individualism, we tend to see this practice as obsolete or counterproductive. Even in the days when the gospels were written, it was considered a complex operation that had to be carried out with care and love in order to achieve its objectives. Yet we need to remember that we are responsible for each other. If we are called to correct others, let us never forget to preserve their dignity.

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Solemnity
The commemoration of the death of the Blessed Virgin is known as the Assumption because of the tradition that her body did not decay but that she was raised up, body and soul, into heaven.
Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Rev 12: 1
A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon beneath her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

The sanctuary of God in heaven opened and the ark of the covenant could be seen inside it. Then came flashes of lightning, peals of thunder and an earthquake, and violent hail. Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, adorned with the sun, standing on the moon, and with the twelve stars on her head for a crown. She was pregnant, and in labour, crying aloud in the pangs of childbirth. Then a second sign appeared in the sky, a huge red dragon which had seven heads and ten horns, and each of the seven heads crowned with a coronet. Its tail dragged a third of the stars from the sky and dropped them to the earth, and the dragon stopped in front of the woman as she was having the child, so that he could eat it as soon as it was born from its mother. The woman brought a male child into the world, the son who was to rule all the nations with an iron sceptre, and the child was taken straight up to God and to his throne, while the woman escaped into the desert, where God had made a place of safety ready, for her to be looked after in the twelve hundred and sixty days. Then I heard a voice shout from heaven, “Victory and power and empire for ever have been won by our God, and all authority for his Christ, now that the persecutor, who accused our brothers day and night before our God, has been brought down.”

The daughters of kings are among your loved ones. On your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir. Listen, O daughter, give ear to my words: forget your own people and your father’s house.
So will the king desire your beauty: He is your lord, pay homage to him. They are escorted amid gladness and joy; they pass within the palace of the king.
Second reading: 1 Corinthians 15:20-26
Christ has been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep. Death came through one man and in the same way the resurrection of the dead has come through one man. Just as all men die in Adam, so all men will be brought to life in Christ; but all of them in their proper order: Christ as the first-fruits and then, after the coming of Christ, those who belong to him. After that will come the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, having done away with every sovereignty, authority and power. For he must be king until he has put all his enemies under his feet and the last of the enemies to be destroyed is death, for everything is to be put under his feet.

Gospel: Luke 1:39-56
Mary set out and went as quickly as she could to a town in the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, “Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in God my saviour; because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid. Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name, and his mercy reaches from age to age for those who fear him. He has shown the power of his arm, he has routed the proud of heart. He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things, the rich sent empty away. He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful of his mercy – according to the promise he made to our ancestors – of his mercy to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.” Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back home.
Prayer over the Offerings
May this oblation, our tribute of homage, rise up to you, O Lord, and, through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, whom you assumed into heaven, may our hearts, aflame with the fire of love, constantly long for you. Through Christ our Lord.

All generations will call me blessed, for he who is mighty has done great things for me.
Prayer after Communion
Having received the Sacrament of salvation, we ask you to grant, O Lord, that, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom you assumed into heaven, we may be brought to the glory of the resurrection. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Today, on the Feast of the Assumption, we join Mary in thanking God for the many wonders he has done in her and for us. We sing the Magnificat with her and share her joy as she looks on her life as the Lord’s humble servant. So let us also examine our lives and the beauty of God’s faithful presence; let us also remember that we will share Mary’s destiny if and only if, like Mary, we submit ourselves with docility to God’s will.
