Deacon, Martyr (258) – Feast
Red
Laurence was one of the seven deacons of the Church of Rome and was executed on 10th August 258, four days after Sixtus II and his companions. He was probably a Spaniard from Toledo.
Entrance Antiphon
This is the blessed Lawrence who gave himself up for the treasure of the Church: for this he earned the suffering of martyrdom to ascend with joy to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Collect
O God, giver of that ardour of love for you by which Saint Lawrence was outstandingly faithful in service and glorious in martyrdom, grant that we may love what he loved and put into practice what he taught. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 2 Corinthians 9:6-10
Do not forget: thin sowing means thin reaping; the more you sow, the more you reap. Each one should give what he has decided in his own mind, not grudgingly or because he is made to, for God loves a cheerful giver. And there is no limit to the blessings which God can send you – he will make sure that you will always have all you need for yourselves in every possible circumstance, and still have something to spare for all sorts of good works. As Scripture says: He was free in almsgiving, and gave to the poor: his good deeds will never be forgotten. The one who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide you with all the seed you want and make the harvest of your good deeds a larger one.

Nourished by these sacred gifts, we humbly implore you, Lord, that the homage of dutiful service, which we render on the feast of Saint Lawrence, may bring us an increase of your saving grace. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
We are socialised in cultures which understand victory as an outcome of defeating others. We therefore struggle with Jesus’ message of victory through falling. A grain’s fall positions it on top of the soil which is what it requires for its growth. Its death positions it again in the soil which opens it up for the emergence of a new plant. This gives it a new identity and opportunity for growth and fruitfulness. Therefore, for something new to emerge and grow in us, something in us and about us has to give way and be submerged. We are all seekers of the Good. But for us to attain the ultimate Good which is God, our egos have to fall, decrease and give way to Godliness. When we empty and submerge ourselves into God and Godliness, we don’t get diminished. We rather get filled with the presence of God which raises us into new beings with new value systems and new sense of Victory. We lose ourselves into the eternal richness of the Life Giver. We become rich by sharing, reconciliatory by forgiving. We rise by raising others and we are exalted by falling prostrate. Are you ready to rise by falling?

Saint Dominic,
Priest (1170 – 1221)

He was born in Castile (part of modern Spain) and became a canon of the cathedral of Osma. In 1216 he founded the Order of Preachers, dedicated to saving souls by preaching and persuasion. Dominic died at Bologna on 6th August 1221.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

May Saint Dominic come to the help of your Church by his merits and teaching, O Lord, and may he, who was an outstanding preacher of your truth, be a devoted intercessor on our behalf. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Jeremiah 31:31-34
See, the days are coming – it is the Lord who speaks – when I will make a new covenant with the House of Israel (and the House of Judah), but not a covenant like the one I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant of mine, so I had to show them who was master. It is the Lord who speaks. No, this is the covenant I will make with the House of Israel when those days arrive – it is the Lord who speaks. Deep within them I will plant my Law, writing it on their hearts. Then I will be their God and they shall be my people. There will be no further need for neighbour to try to teach neighbour, or brother to say to brother, ‘Learn to know the Lord!’ No, they will all know me, the least no less than the greatest – it is the Lord who speaks – since I will forgive their iniquity and never call their sin to mind.

Meditation
What is the quality of my personal experience of the ‘Great I am?’ When my perception of how great I am is not founded on the Great I Am, I become an obstacle to deepening my relationship with God. The depth of my relationship with the God is not founded on the greatness that I attribute to myself. It is rather predicated on the extent to which I allow God’s revelatory intervention to illumine who I am. Yet, Peter is preoccupied with his self-created image of Jesus. While Jesus came to save the world through the Cross, Peter purports to save Jesus from the Cross. By delinking death from Jesus’ mission, Peter inadvertently usurps the role of the commissioner of the salvation mission. He thus re-enacts the temptation of Jesus by positioning his self-created image of Jesus above Christ’s original Mission. This is why Jesus calls him ‘Satan”. His self-created image of Christ was adversarial to Christ’s original mission. Do we project our unresolved identity crises and false understanding of self into our expectations of the Messiah?

Pope Saint Sixtus II

Sixtus was elected Pope in 257. Twelve months later, on 6th August, as he was celebrating Mass in the catacomb of St Calixtus, he was seized by the authorities and beheaded along with four of his deacons. He was buried in the same catacomb.

Meditation
What sets the Canaanite woman’s faith as unique is her deep awareness about Jesus as the true Master. The Canaanite woman is not fixated on the gravity of insult owing to being referred to as a dog. Suffering had brought her to grapple with the fundamental question of existence. Her deep encounter with Jesus had made her recognise the rare privilege of being in the presence of the Master of existence. With an attitude of abundant awe and deep humility, she bravely embraces the dog tag from Jesus the Master. After all, being tormented by demons had already reduced her daughter’s life into almost nothing. She is aware that Jesus is the Master from whom everything came into being; man and dog alike. Before Jesus we are nothing. Yet he still calls and justifies us. Even when life reduces us to near dog status, he has a way of restoring us into worthiness. Being counted worthy to partake at His Eucharistic table by far surpasses the question of the size of the bread in which we are to partake.

O God, who in the glorious Transfiguration of your Only Begotten Son, confirmed the mysteries of faith by the witness of the Fathers and wonderfully prefigured our full adoption to sonship, grant, we pray, to your servants, that, listening to the voice of your beloved Son, we may merit to become coheirs with him. Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter spoke to Jesus: ‘Rabbi,’ he said ‘it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ He did not know what to say; they were so frightened. And a cloud came, covering them in shadow; and there came a voice from the cloud, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him.’ Then suddenly, when they looked round, they saw no one with them any more but only Jesus. As they came down from the mountain he warned them to tell no one what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They observed the warning faithfully, though among themselves they discussed what ‘rising from the dead’ could mean.

May the heavenly nourishment we have received, O Lord, we pray, transform us into the likeness of your Son, whose radiant splendour you willed to make manifest in his glorious Transfiguration. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
Overwhelmed by the transfiguration spectacle, the three disciples sought for a perpetual extension of the transfiguration gratification. They were unaware of the deep personal sacrifices required to ‘come down’ and encounter the daily cost of adhering to God’s Laws and surrendering of the self to prophetic risks as represented by Moses and Elijah. We are living in a historical moment where people are clamouring for change without committing themselves to personal interior change. The Transfiguration experience cannot be reduced to an emotional gratification obtained from momentary spiritual encounters and external religiosity. It is rather an outcome of labourious efforts for interior transformation where ascending begins with self-emptying and ‘coming down’ from the mountain of pride. It demands for an inner disposition to listen and be disfigured into obedience by the voice of God’s Beloved Son. At the height of spiritual transfiguration, we are configured to Jesus.

The Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major

The Council of Ephesus in 431 formally proclaimed the mother of Jesus as the Mother of God, and the church (basilica) of St Mary Major on the Esquiline Hill in Rome was built shortly afterwards to celebrate her motherhood. This is the oldest church in the West that is dedicated to Our Lady.

At the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah in the fifth month of the fourth year, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, a Gibeonite, spoke as follows to Jeremiah in the Temple of the Lord in the presence of the priests and of all the people. ‘The Lord, the God of Israel, says this, “I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. In two years’ time I will bring back all the vessels of the Temple of the Lord which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon carried off from this place and took to Babylon. And I will also bring back Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who have gone to Babylon – it is the Lord who speaks. Yes, I am going to break the yoke of the king of Babylon.”’ The prophet Jeremiah then replied to the prophet Hananiah in front of the priests and all the people there in the Temple of the Lord. ‘I hope so’ the prophet Jeremiah said. ‘May the Lord do so. May he fulfil the words that you have prophesied and bring the vessels of the Temple of the Lord and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon. Listen carefully, however, to this word that I am now going to say for you and all the people to hear: From remote times, the prophets who preceded you and me prophesied war, famine and plague for many countries and for great kingdoms; but the prophet who prophesies peace can only be recognised as one truly sent by the Lord when his word comes true.’ The prophet Hananiah then took the yoke off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it. In front of all the people Hananiah then said, ‘The Lord says this, “This is how, two years hence, I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and take it off the necks of all the nations.”’ At this, the prophet Jeremiah went away. After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke which he had taken off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah the word of the Lord was addressed to Jeremiah, ‘Go to Hananiah and tell him this, “The Lord says this: You can break wooden yokes? Right, I will make them iron yokes instead! For the Lord Sabaoth, the God of Israel, says this: An iron yoke is what I now lay on the necks of all these nations to subject them to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. They will be subject to him; I have even given him the wild animals.”’ The prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, ‘Listen carefully, Hananiah: the Lord has not sent you; and thanks to you this people are now relying on what is false. Hence – the Lord says this, “I am going to throw you off the face of the earth: you are going to die this year since you have preached apostasy from the Lord.”’ The prophet Hananiah died the same year, in the seventh month.

When Jesus received the news of John the Baptist’s death he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves. But the people heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot. So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick. When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, ‘This is a lonely place, and the time has slipped by; so send the people away, and they can go to the villages to buy themselves some food.’ Jesus replied, ‘There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.’ But they answered ‘All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.’ ‘Bring them here to me’ he said. He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves handed them to his disciples who gave them to the crowds. They all ate as much as they wanted, and they collected the scraps remaining; twelve baskets full. Those who ate numbered about five thousand men, to say nothing of women and children.

Meditation
The people were so captivated by the presence of Jesus that they forgot to carry food deep into the desert. Seeing the burden of scarcity, the disciples wanted him to dismiss the crowd. Jesus however reminded them that “there is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.” Here, the empathetic presence of Jesus seeks to restore the attitude of other-centeredness. He endeavored to break the yoke of shifting responsibility in the midst of acute scarcity and the burden of hunger. Jesus unyokes himself from the perception of seeing others as a burden to be sent away. He identifies with the people by yoking himself with their burdens. His Agape-laden eyes pierce through the people to reveal the hidden treasure that they were. Beyond their burden, Jesus sees a treasure trove worth harnessing and sharing. From the two hearts of gratitude, an abundance of bread and fish were sourced and multiplied. In the presence of Jesus, the yoke of self-centeredness is broken and transformed into a miracle of self-giving where all ate and were satisfied. Do we hide behind evangelisation when we are faced with the urgency of concrete people’s needs?

Then you will learn that I, the Lord, am your God.”’ And so it came about: quails flew up in the evening, and they covered the camp; in the morning there was a coating of dew all round the camp. The things we have heard and understood, the things our fathers have told us, these we will not hide from their children but will tell them to the next generation:
the glories of the Lord and his might and the marvellous deeds he has done, Yet he commanded the clouds above and opened the gates of heaven. He rained down manna for their food, and gave them bread from heaven.
Mere men ate the bread of angels. He sent them abundance of food; So he brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won.
Second reading: Ephesians 4:17,20-24
I want to urge you in the name of the Lord, not to go on living the aimless kind of life that pagans live. Now that is hardly the way you have learnt from Christ, unless you failed to hear him properly when you were taught what the truth is in Jesus. You must give up your old way of life; you must put aside your old self, which gets corrupted by following illusory desires. Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution so that you can put on the new self that has been created in God’s way, in the goodness and holiness of the truth.

When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into boats and crossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus. When they found him on the other side, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ Jesus answered: ‘I tell you most solemnly, you are not looking for me because you have seen the signs but because you had all the bread you wanted to eat. Do not work for food that cannot last, but work for food that endures to eternal life, the kind of food the Son of Man is offering you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.’ Then they said to him, ‘What must we do if we are to do the works that God wants?’ Jesus gave them this answer, ‘This is working for God: you must believe in the one he has sent.’ So they said, ‘What sign will you give to show us that we should believe in you? What work will you do? Our fathers had manna to eat in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ Jesus answered: ‘I tell you most solemnly, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven, it is my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread; for the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ ‘Sir,’ they said ‘give us that bread always.’ Jesus answered: ‘I am the bread of life. Graciously sanctify these gifts, O Lord, we pray, and, accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice, make of us an eternal offering to you. Through Christ our Lord.

You have given us, O Lord, bread from heaven, endowed with all delights and sweetness in every taste.
Prayer after Communion
Accompany with constant protection, O Lord, those you renew with these heavenly gifts and, in your never-failing care for them, make them worthy of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
« Do not work for food that cannot last.” Jesus’ warning comes from the way the people he fed struggled to find him. He realised that they were looking for him not because they were spiritually hungry but because they ate and were filled physically. They were not looking for him because they had eaten and were spiritually satisfied, but because they ate the bread and were satisfied. Today’s Gospel continues to reveal Christ as the spiritual food that we should be concerned about. Why is this food given much weight? The first reason is its nature and its union with God. That food gets the first place because it gives life to the world. This life should be distinguished from the usual way of life. It is divine life that lasts forever: « He who comes to me will never be hungry; he who believes in me will never thirst.» So, it is an invitation to see the goodness of God and his union with us, in a way that makes our presence here on earth hopeful.
