Saint Joseph the Worker

The feast of St. Joseph the Worker was established by Pope Pius XII in 1955 in order to Christianize the concept of labor and give to all workmen a model and a protector

Collect
O God, restorer and lover of innocence, direct the hearts of your servants towards yourself, that those you have set free from the darkness of unbelief may never stray from the light of your truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 15:1-6
Some men came down from Judaea and taught the brothers, ‘Unless you have yourselves circumcised in the tradition of Moses you cannot be saved.’ This led to disagreement, and after Paul and Barnabas had had a long argument with these men it was arranged that Paul and Barnabas and others of the Church should go up to Jerusalem and discuss the problem with the apostles and elders. All the members of the Church saw them off, and as they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria they told how the pagans had been converted, and this news was received with the greatest satisfaction by the brothers. When they arrived in Jerusalem they were welcomed by the Church and by the apostles and elders, and gave an account of all that God had done with them. But certain members of the Pharisees’ party who had become believers objected, insisting that the pagans should be circumcised and instructed to keep the Law of Moses. The apostles and elders met to look into the matter.

Jerusalem is built as a city strongly compact. It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord.
For Israel’s law it is, there to praise the Lord’s name. There were set the thrones of judgement of the house of David.

Gospel : John 15:1-8
Jesus said: ‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that bears no fruit he cuts away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes to make it bear even more. You are pruned already, by means of the word that I have spoken to you. Make your home in me, as I make mine in you. As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself, but must remain part of the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in plenty; for cut off from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is like a branch that has been thrown away – he withers; these branches are collected and thrown on the fire, and they are burnt. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask what you will and you shall get it. It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit, and then you will be my disciples.’

Grant, we pray, O Lord, that we may always find delight in these paschal mysteries, so that the renewal constantly at work within us may be the cause of our unending joy. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
Hear, O Lord, our prayers, that this most holy exchange, by which you have redeemed us, may bring your help in this present life and ensure for us eternal gladness. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Those who are familiar with agriculture know the intimate relationship that exists between a plant and its branches. It is such that the branch cannot survive without the rest of the plant. Jesus uses this same idea with specific reference to the vine and the branches to tell us how close we ought to be to him. The highest thing that cuts us off from him is sin. So if we want to remain united with Jesus, the vine, we must avoid sin in all its forms. Sin brings death, especially mortal sin, because it cuts us off from our source of life. Each moment we find ourselves going against any of the commandments, let us know that we are cutting ourselves off from the vine and by cutting ourselves off from him, we can do nothing. But as weak human beings, we find it difficult to live without sin. Therefore, we must return to the vine each time we fall via the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In this way, we re-graft ourselves to the vine and prevent the risk of being burnt away with the dry branches. Let us pray for the grace to remain faithful to him.

Saint Catherine of Siena
(1347 – 1380)
White
Born in Siena, she entered Third Order of the Dominicans. She is remembered for her burning love of God and neighbour and contributions to doctrine. In 1970 Pope Paul VI declared her a Doctor of the Church.

Here is a wise virgin, from among the number of the prudent, who went forth with lighted lamp to meet Christ, alleluia.

O God, who set Saint Catherine of Siena on fire with divine love in her contemplation of the Lord’s Passion and her service of your Church, grant, through her intercession, that your people, participating in the mystery of Christ, may ever exult in the revelation of his glory. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 14:5-18
Eventually with the connivance of the authorities a move was made by pagans as well as Jews to make attacks on the apostles and to stone them. When the apostles came to hear of this, they went off for safety to Lycaonia where, in the towns of Lystra and Derbe and in the surrounding country, they preached the Good News. A man sat there who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled from birth; and as he listened to Paul preaching, he managed to catch his eye. Seeing that the man had the faith to be cured, Paul said in a loud voice, ‘Get to your feet – stand up’, and the cripple jumped up and began to walk. When the crowd saw what Paul had done they shouted in the language of Lycaonia, ‘These people are gods who have come down to us disguised as men.’ They addressed Barnabas as Zeus, and since Paul was the principal speaker they called him Hermes. The priests of Zeus-outside-the-Gate, proposing that all the people should offer sacrifice with them, brought garlanded oxen to the gates. When the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening they tore their clothes, and rushed into the crowd, shouting, ‘Friends, what do you think you are doing? We are only human beings like you. We have come with good news to make you turn from these empty idols to the living God who made heaven and earth and the sea and all that these hold. In the past he allowed each nation to go its own way; but even then he did not leave you without evidence of himself in the good things he does for you: he sends you rain from heaven, he makes your crops grow when they should, he gives you food and makes you happy.’ Even this speech, however, was scarcely enough to stop the crowd offering them sacrifice.

Accept, O Lord, the saving sacrifice we offer in commemoration of Saint Catherine,

If we walk in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of his Son Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin, alleluia.

May the heavenly table at which we have been fed, O Lord, confer eternal life upon us, as even in this world it nourished the life of Saint Catherine. Through Christ our Lord.
Mediation
And anybody who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I shall love him and show myself to him.” These words are John’s definition of God. God is love. Consequently, love brings us to union with God and our neighbour. God’s love and my love must point in the same direction if we are to be one. Love is not just a feeling; it is a decision. To make this decision means to “cut away,” to get rid of whatever is blocking my way of loving God and my neighbour. What is stopping my surrender to God’s will? What is blocking my being one with him? Is there anything in my life preventing me from making this decision to love God right now? If so, removing this block is what we are to be concerned about.

First reading: Acts 9:26-31
When Saul got to Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him: they could not believe he was really a disciple. Barnabas, however, took charge of him, introduced him to the apostles, and explained how the Lord had appeared to Saul and spoken to him on his journey, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. Saul now started to go round with them in Jerusalem, preaching fearlessly in the name of the Lord. But after he had spoken to the Hellenists, and argued with them, they became determined to kill him. When the brothers knew, they took him to Caesarea, and sent him off from there to Tarsus. The churches throughout Judaea, Galilee and Samaria were now left in peace, building themselves up, living in the fear of the Lord, and filled with the consolation of the Holy Spirit.

My dear people, if we cannot be condemned by our own conscience, we need not be afraid in God’s presence, and whatever we ask him, we shall receive, because we keep his commandments and live the kind of life that he wants. Graciously be present to your people, we pray, O Lord, and lead those you have imbued with heavenly mysteries to pass from former ways to newness of life. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
One does not need a degree in Agriculture to understand that a branch that is not attached to the tree withers. When a branch withers it is only good to be cast into the fire. So it is with us when we fail to attach ourselves with Christ. The leading slogan in this modern age is «Freedom», not freedom in the sense of absence from coercion but in the sense of promotion of licentiousness. Many people shirk inhibition of any kind. The call to responsibility is regarded as a call to restriction. «Do what you want if you can,» becomes the principle of the age. The not so surprising thing is that those who engage in this kind of unhinged lifestyle wither slowly. Many of them are racked by substance abuse. Many are down with life-threatening addictions and irrational fears of various kinds. The overbearing feeling in the midst of the whole licentious lifestyle is meaninglessness. This is the plight of those branches that refuse to attach themselves to the Eternal Vine, Jesus Christ.

Saint Cletus
White
St. Cletus was the third bishop of Rome. He sat twelve years, from 76 to 89. He was buried near St. Linus, on the Vatican, and his relics still remain in that church.

First reading : Acts 13:26-33
Paul stood up in the synagogue at Antioch in Pisidia, held up a hand for silence and began to speak: ‘My brothers, sons of Abraham’s race, and all you who fear God, this message of salvation is meant for you. What the people of Jerusalem and their rulers did, though they did not realise it, was in fact to fulfil the prophecies read on every sabbath. Though they found nothing to justify his death, they condemned him and asked Pilate to have him executed. When they had carried out everything that Scripture foretells about him they took him down from the tree and buried him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and it is these same companions of his who are now his witnesses before our people. ‘We have come here to tell you the Good News. It was to our ancestors that God made the promise but it is to us, their children, that he has fulfilled it, by raising Jesus from the dead. As Scripture says in the second psalm: You are my son: today I have become your father.’

Keep safe, O Lord, we pray, those whom you have saved by your kindness, that, redeemed by the Passion of your Son, they may rejoice in his Resurrection. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
“Do not let your hearts be troubled.” These words of Jesus are not a suggestion but a command – for his disciples and all of us. Jesus gave these words to us on the night before he died for our salvation. His disciples would see him arrested, mocked, tortured, crucified, and killed. How could their hearts not be troubled? Jesus is saying that when overwhelmed with tremendous grief, our faith pierces through grief and transforms grief. Faith helps us to gaze into the promised eternity. Faith enabled Paul and Barnabas to embrace the hardship of evangelisation: the anxiety of unknown places and unknown peoples, physical dangers, and mental exhaustion. We are to view all of our earthly sufferings through the eyes of faith. Faith, not naïve optimism, preserves our hearts from being overwhelmed by earthly suffering.

He was a cousin of Barnabas and accompanied the apostle Paul on his first missionary journey; later he followed him to Rome. He is credited with founding the Church in Alexandria.

O God, who raised up Saint Mark, your Evangelist, and endowed him with the grace to preach the Gospel, grant, we pray, that we may so profit from his teaching as to follow faithfully in the footsteps of Christ. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 1 Peter 5:5-14
All wrap yourselves in humility to be servants of each other, because God refuses the proud and will always favour the humble. Bow down, then, before the power of God now, and he will raise you up on the appointed day; unload all your worries on to him, since he is looking after you. Be calm but vigilant, because your enemy the devil is prowling round like a roaring lion, looking for someone to eat. Gospel : Mark 16:15-20
Jesus showed himself to the Eleven, and said to them: ‘Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation. He who believes and is baptised will be saved; he who does not believe will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils; they will have the gift of tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and be unharmed should they drink deadly poison; they will lay their hands on the sick, who will recover.’ And so the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven: there at the right hand of God he took his place, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that accompanied it.

As we venerate the glory of Saint Mark, we offer you, Lord, the sacrifice of praise and humbly beseech you, that your Church may always persevere in the preaching of the Gospel. Through Christ our Lord.

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that what we have received from your holy altar may sanctify us and make us strong in the faith of the Gospel which Saint Mark proclaimed. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The significance of St Mark’s Day cannot be separated from the important mission Christ entrusted to all who have placed their trust in Him. This mission is for us to preach the Good News to all people all around the world. We cannot deny this mission, nor can we ignore it, for it is this mission that has been entrusted to all of us who have been baptised in the Name of our Lord. And it continues even today, as we still need to proclaim the word of God’s salvation to all the people. Had the Apostles kept the Good News to themselves, there would have been no Church. Today we are called to be the mouthpiece and witnesses of Christ to all the nations. Today’s Responsorial Psalm reminds me, «I will sing forever of your love, O Lord.»

Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Priest, Martyr
White
He was born in Sigmaringen in Germany. He joined the Capuchin Friars at the age of 35 and led a harsh life of prayer and vigils. He was murdered by a Calvinist mob at Seewis on 24 April 1622.

O God, life of the faithful, glory of the humble, blessedness of the just, listen kindly to the prayers of those who call on you, that they who thirst for what you generously promise may always have their fill of your plenty. First reading : Acts 12:24-13:5
The word of God continued to spread and to gain followers. Barnabas and Saul completed their task and came back from Jerusalem, bringing John Mark with them. In the church at Antioch the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and keeping a fast, the Holy Spirit said, ‘I want Barnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have called them.’ So it was that after fasting and prayer they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So these two, sent on their mission by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there sailed to Cyprus. They landed at Salamis and proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; John acted as their assistant.

If anyone hears my words and does not keep them faithfully, it is not I who shall condemn him, since I have come not to condemn the world, but to save the world. He who rejects me and refuses my words has his judge already: the word itself that I have spoken will be his judge on the last day. For what I have spoken does not come from myself; no, what I was to say, what I had to speak, was commanded by the Father who sent me, and I know that his commands mean eternal life. It is impossible to see without light. Our eyes need to be aided by the light to see. Jesus declares himself in the Gospel of today as the light. Just as the physical light is to our eyes, so is Jesus to our faith. Without Jesus, our faith is lacking because it is not well-lighted by the light himself—even those who claim to believe in him. Believing in Jesus entails living in obedience to his commandments and walking in His ways. He has come as the light to the world. Light is something that shines out for others to see. In some cases, light directs the footsteps of the wanderer. So our Christian life should be able to shine out for others to see and be directed towards Jesus. Light and darkness are mutual exclusives. When we walk in the light of Christ, we should be able to reflect that light for others to see. If we do not follow the light of Christ, then we walk in darkness. Then, darkness and the deeds of darkness have no room to operate. May the light of Christ shine on us all today and always.
