Prière d’ouverture
Dieu tout-puissant, force de ceux qui espèrent en toi, sois favorable à nos appels: Puisque l’homme est fragile et que, sans toi, il ne peut rien, donne-nous toujours le secours de ta grâce. Ainsi nous pourrons, en observant tes commandements, vouloir et agir de manière à répondre à ton amour. Par Jésus, le Christ, notre Seigneur. Amen.
1ère lecture : 1 R 21, 1-16
En ce temps-là, Naboth, de la ville de Yizréel, possédait une vigne à côté du palais d’Acab, roi de Samarie. Acab dit un jour à Naboth : « Cède-moi ta vigne ; elle me servira de jardin potager, car elle est juste à côté de ma maison ; je te donnerai en échange une vigne meilleure, ou, si tu préfères, je te donnerai l’argent qu’elle vaut. » Naboth répondit à Acab : « Que le Seigneur me préserve de te céder l’héritage de mes pères ! » Acab retourna chez lui sombre et irrité, parce que Naboth lui avait dit : « Je ne te céderai pas l’héritage de mes pères.» Il se coucha sur son lit, tourna son visage vers le mur, et refusa de manger. Sa femme Jézabel vint lui dire : « Pourquoi es-tu de mauvaise humeur ? Pourquoi ne veux-tu pas manger?» Il répondit : « J’ai parlé à Naboth de Yizréel. Je lui ai dit : “Cède-moi ta vigne pour de l’argent, ou, si tu préfères, pour une autre vigne en échange.” Mais il a répondu : “Je ne te céderai pas ma vigne !” » Alors sa femme Jézabel lui dit: « Est-ce que tu es le roi d’Israël, oui ou non ? Lève-toi, mange, et retrouve ta bonne humeur : moi, je vais te donner la vigne de aboth. » Elle écrivit des lettres au nom d’Acab, elle les scella du sceau royal, et elle les adressa aux anciens et aux notables de la ville où habitait Naboth. Elle avait écrit dans ces lettres : « Proclamez un jeûne, faites comparaître Naboth devant le peuple. Placez en face de lui deux vauriens, qui témoigneront contre lui : “Tu as maudit Dieu et le roi !” Ensuite, faites-le sortir de la ville, lapidez-le, et qu’il meure ! » Les anciens et les notables qui habitaient la ville de Naboth firent ce que Jézabel avait ordonné dans ses lettres. Ils proclamèrent un jeûne et firent comparaître Naboth devant le peuple. Alors arrivèrent les deux individus qui se placèrent en face de lui et portèrent contre lui ce témoignage : « Naboth a maudit Dieu et le roi. » On fit sortir Naboth de la ville, on le lapida, et il mourut. Puis on envoya dire à Jézabel : « Naboth a été lapidé et il est mort. » Lorsque Jézabel en fut informée, elle dit à Acab : « Va, prends possession de la vigne de ce Naboth qui a refusé de la céder pour de l’argent, car il n’y a plus de Naboth : il est mort. » Quand Acab apprit que Naboth était mort, il se rendit à la vigne de Naboth et en prit possession.

Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis de ne pas riposter au méchant ; mais si quelqu’un te gifle sur la joue droite, tends-lui encore l’autre. Et si quelqu’un veut te poursuivre en justice et prendre ta tunique, laisse-lui encore ton manteau. Et si quelqu’un te réquisitionne pour faire mille pas, fais-en deux mille avec lui. À qui te demande, donne ; à qui veut t’emprunter, ne tourne pas le dos. »

Méditation
La venue du Royaume de Dieu exige un changement complet de notre façon habituelle de voir le monde parce qu’il est fondé sur l’amour et les actions de ceux qui y vivent doivent être motivées par cet amour, même lorsque la réaction normale pourrait être la vengeance ou la punition. Jésus fait référence à une vieille loi ‘’la loi du talion’’. Elle est citée dans l’Exode, le Lévitique et le Deutéronome. Les paroles de Jésus montrent à quel point son message est radical. Il introduit une loi entièrement nouvelle, fondée sur l’amour et la miséricorde. Le Seigneur donne sans retenue et attend de nous que nous fassions de même. Puissions-nous donc honnêtement nous tourner vers nos relations difficiles et en offrir l’amour et la bonté que nous recevons de Dieu au quotidien.

Naboth of Jezreel had a vineyard close by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria, and Ahab said to Naboth, ‘Give me your vineyard to be my vegetable garden, since it adjoins my house; I will give you a better vineyard for it or, if you prefer, I will give you its worth in money.’ But Naboth answered Ahab, ‘The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my ancestors!’ Ahab went home gloomy and out of temper at the words of Naboth of Jezreel, ‘I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.’ He lay down on his bed and turned his face away and refused to eat. His wife Jezebel came to him. ‘Why are you so dispirited’ she said ‘that you will not eat?’ He said, ‘I have been speaking to Naboth of Jezreel; I said: Give me your vineyard either for money or, if you prefer, for another vineyard in exchange. But he said, “I will not give you my vineyard.”’ Then his wife Jezebel said, ‘You make a fine king of Israel, and no mistake! Get up and eat; cheer up, and you will feel better; I will get you the vineyard of Naboth of Jezreel myself.’ So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, sending them to the elders and nobles who lived where Naboth lived. In the letters she wrote, ‘Proclaim a fast, and put Naboth in the forefront of the people. Confront him with a couple of scoundrels who will accuse him like this, “You have cursed God and the king” Then take him outside and stone him to death.’ The men of Naboth’s town, the elders and nobles who lived in his town, did what Jezebel ordered, what was written in the letters she had sent them. They proclaimed a fast and put Naboth in the forefront of the people. Then the two scoundrels came and stood in front of him and made their accusation, ‘Naboth has cursed God and the king.’ They led him outside the town and stoned him to death. They then sent word to Jezebel, ‘Naboth has been stoned to death.’ When Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, ‘Get up! Take possession of the vineyard which Naboth of Jezreel would not give you for money, for Naboth is no longer alive, he is dead.’ When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth of Jezreel and take possession of it.

Meditation
Once again, Jesus presents us with one of the radical changes to the old laws. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth was the order of the Mosaic Law. But Christ is here preaching against retaliation and embracing love. We are to avoid physical violence or damage. The essence of the show of love is to shame the opponent into a change of heart. We are to avoid litigation when we are accused and show compassion even when we are stretched beyond our limits in doing good. Giving to beggars and borrowers goes beyond the scope of non-resistance to evil but advocates kindness, generosity and an open attitude towards people.

Qu’il est bon de rendre grâce au Seigneur, de chanter pour ton nom, Dieu Très-Haut, d’annoncer dès le matin ton amour, ta fidélité, au long des nuits.
Le juste grandira comme un palmier, il poussera comme un cèdre du Liban ; planté dans les parvis du Seigneur, il grandira dans la maison de notre Dieu.
Vieillissant, il fructifie encore, il garde sa sève et sa verdeur pour annoncer : « Le Seigneur est droit ! Pas de ruse en Dieu, mon rocher ! »
2ème lecture : 2 Corinthiens 5, 6-10
Frères, nous gardons toujours confiance, tout en sachant que nous demeurons loin du Seigneur,
tant que nous demeurons dans ce corps ; en effet, nous cheminons dans la foi, non dans la claire vision.
Oui, nous avons confiance, et nous voudrions plutôt quitter la demeure de ce corps pour demeurer près du Seigneur. Mais de toute manière, que nous demeurions dans ce corps ou en dehors, notre ambition, c’est de plaire au Seigneur. Car il nous faudra tous apparaître à découvert devant le tribunal du Christ,
pour que chacun soit rétribué selon ce qu’il a fait, soit en bien soit en mal, pendant qu’il était dans son corps.

Evangile : Marc 4, 26-34
En ce temps-là, parlant à la foule, Jésus disait : « Il en est du règne de Dieu comme d’un homme qui jette en terre la semence : nuit et jour, qu’il dorme ou qu’il se lève, la semence germe et grandit, il ne sait comment. D’elle-même, la terre produit d’abord l’herbe, puis l’épi, enfin du blé plein l’épi. Et dès que le blé est mûr, il y met la faucille, puisque le temps de la moisson est arrivé. » Il disait encore : « À quoi allons-nous comparer le règne de Dieu ? Par quelle parabole pouvons-nous le représenter ? Il est comme une graine de moutarde : quand on la sème en terre, elle est la plus petite de toutes les semences. Mais quand on l’a semée, elle grandit et dépasse toutes les plantes potagères ; et elle étend de longues branches, si bien que les oiseaux du ciel peuvent faire leur nid à son ombre. » Par de nombreuses paraboles semblables, Jésus leur annonçait la Parole, dans la mesure où ils étaient capables de l’entendre. Il ne leur disait rien sans parabole, mais il expliquait tout à ses disciples en particulier.

Méditation
Le royaume de Dieu que nous décrit Jésus dans l’Evangile de ce dimanche a plusieurs facettes. Comme le diamant, il est difficile de l’expliquer brièvement et totalement. Mais de nombreux aspects nous en sont révélés. La nouvelle que le Royaume de Dieu est parmi nous est la principale nouvelle que Jésus nous a apportée. Preuve que notre Dieu n’est pas éloigné de nous. Au contraire, Il est au milieu de nous et actif dans nos vies quotidiennes. Notre tache consiste donc à semer et à faire confiance en sachant que chaque semence poussera à son rythme et que la récolte viendra au moment voulu par Dieu. Aide-nous Seigneur à toujours fixer notre regard sur toi car tu es le Maître d’œuvre et le responsable de la moisson.

Planted in the house of the Lord they will flourish in the courts of our God, still bearing fruit when they are old, still full of sap, still green, to proclaim that the Lord is just. In him, my rock, there is no wrong.
Second reading: 2 Corinthians 5:6-10
We are always full of confidence when we remember that to live in the body means to be exiled from the Lord, going as we do by faith and not by sight – we are full of confidence, I say, and actually want to be exiled from the body and make our home with the Lord. Whether we are living in the body or exiled from it, we are intent on pleasing him. For all the truth about us will be brought out in the law court of Christ, and each of us will get what he deserves for the things he did in the body, good or bad.

Gospel: Mark 4:26-34
Jesus said to the crowds: ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time: he starts to reap because the harvest has come.’ He also said, ‘What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.’ Using many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, so far as they were capable of understanding it. He would not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything to his disciples when they were alone.

Meditation
In today’s gospel, Christ uses two parables to describe the kingdom of God. The kingdom he invites us to is a simple and peaceful one. It is open to all who seek it with a sincere heart. The easiest way to enter into it is by sowing a seed of faith in Christ. This is the key. Hence, in the second parable, the mustard seed, the smallest seed, refers to our faith. “If you have faith like a grain of mustard seed…nothing will be impossible for you” (Mt 17, 20). This includes entering the kingdom of God. However, it is important to note that the authenticity of our faith must be tested (James 1:3; 1Peter 1:7). Faith grows, and when it does, it achieves great things. As it grows, it leads us to Christ and, consequently, to his kingdom. Our faith also draws others to Christ and his church, the visible sign of God’s kingdom on earth. As Christ says: “The birds of the air come to take shelter under its branches.” How does our faith draw others to Christ? When we demonstrate or bear a good testimony of our individual and collective faith, the result is excellent. Lives could be touched and transformed. A few persons might come to believe in God.

Canonisée en 1867, Germaine (vers 1579-1601) connut une vie difficile du fait de son physique répugnant. Orpheline de mère peu après sa naissance, la seule joie qu’elle éprouvait était celle de parler avec Dieu. Après sa mort, plusieurs miracles lui furent attribués.

Le Seigneur est ma lumière et mon salut, qui pourrais-je craindre? Le Seigneur est le rempart de ma vie, devant qui tremblerais-je ?
Prière d’ouverture
Seigneur, source de tout bien, réponds sans te lasser à notre appel: inspire-nous ce qui est juste, aide-nous à l’accomplir. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : 1 Rois 19, 19-21
En ces jours-là, Élie descendit de la montagne. Il trouva Élisée, fils de Shafath, en train de labourer. Il avait à labourer douze arpents, et il en était au douzième. Élie passa près de lui et jeta vers lui son manteau. Alors Élisée quitta ses bœufs, courut derrière Élie, et lui dit : « Laisse-moi embrasser mon père et ma mère, puis je te suivrai. » Élie répondit : « Va-t’en, retourne là-bas ! Je n’ai rien fait. » Alors Élisée s’en retourna ;
mais il prit la paire de bœufs pour les immoler, les fit cuire avec le bois de l’attelage, et les donna à manger aux gens. Puis il se leva, partit à la suite d’Élie et se mit à son service.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Vous avez encore appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne manqueras pas à tes serments, mais tu t’acquitteras de tes serments envers le Seigneur. Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis de ne pas jurer du tout, ni par le ciel, car c’est le trône de Dieu, ni par la terre, car elle est son marchepied, ni par Jérusalem, car elle est la Ville du grand Roi. Et ne jure pas non plus sur ta tête, parce que tu ne peux pas rendre un seul de tes cheveux blanc ou noir. Que votre parole soit “oui”, si c’est “oui”, “non”, si c’est “non”. Ce qui est en plus vient du Mauvais. »

Seigneur notre Dieu, nous voulons te servir ; regarde notre offrande : qu’elle soit agréable à tes yeux, et nous obtienne un accroissement de charité. Par Jésus.

Dieu qui veux notre guérison, agis en nous par cette Eucharistie : libère-nous de nos penchants mauvais, oriente notre vie vers le bien. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Jésus prend un enseignement de la tradition juive et nuance. Son argument se termine par un appel à des valeurs très estimées même si elles ne sont pas toujours mises en pratique: la simplicité dans nos relations, l’honnêteté envers l’autre, la transparence dans nos paroles. Il appelle à la sincérité, à la simplicité et au respect de ce que nous disons ou promettons. Nous cherchons au quotidien la justification devant les hommes, nous nous comparons les uns aux autres : « Cherchez d’abord le Royaume de Dieu » nous dit Jésus. Si nous avons seulement un peu de foi en la parole de Dieu créatrice, fructueuse et qui ne revient pas sans effets (Cf. Is 55, 11), nous trouverons le bonheur d’être comblés bien au delà de nos désirs.

Peter Snow a priest in Soissons, France and Ralph Grimston, his friend (a layman) where key figures in the English mission (1598). Both suffered dead for preaching the gospel. They were beatified in 1987.

Meditation
Jesus again presents to us the path to true worship and authentic righteousness. Swearing by anything negates God’s sanctity because everything in creation is from God and depends on God. Jesus Christ is God’s permanent yes, and we need to model our life to oppose hypocrisy and embrace ideal simplicity. The Ten Commandments say, «do not take the name of God in vain or bear false witness». This enjoins us always to speak the truth at all times. We pray that God’s grace will always lead us to speak the truth, which will set us free.

Méditation Dans l’Evangile du jour, Jésus nous apprend des compétences vraiment pratiques pour rester sur la bonne voie : éviter la pente glissante en tombant dans le péché. Les propos de Jésus ne sont pas à prendre à la lettre lorsqu’il demande d’arracher son œil ou couper sa main s’ils nous entraînent au péché. C’est terriblement exigeant, mais c’est cela la loi de l’Evangile, intérieure et pénétrant le cœur, différente de la loi des pharisiens, basée sur les apparences : « purifie l’intérieur de la coupe, afin que l’extérieur aussi devienne pur » (Mt 23, 26), reprochait vivement Jésus aux pharisiens. Il nous incrit donc tout simplement à l’école de la pureté du regard, de la chasteté de l’esprit, et de la pensée en nous donnant la recette destructrice du péché à la racine et vivre en enfants de Dieu.

Meditation
From the beginning, marriage was understood as a stable union in which the man and the woman become one body. The expression’ one body’ rightly expresses the kind of unity that is established. Unfortunately, the institution of marriage is suffering attacks from many fronts. The general train of thought is that people should be free to make choices even after the first choice, should this first choice fail. This has led to a situation where people are no longer very serious with the first choice as there are always possibilities for a second, third, forth and even fifth choice. But the question is, what are we looking for? The Catholic Church as ‘mater et magister’ has remained vehemently faithful to the teaching of Christ that anyone who divorces and marries another commits adultery and vice versa. This is to make clear that divorce is wrong. Let us also pray for those preparing to marry that God may help them to make the right choices.

Né à Lisbonne, Fernand fut d’abord chanoine régulier à Coïmbre. Il prit le nom d’Antoine quand il entra chez les Franciscains. D’abord retiré dans la solitude, il se voua ensuite à la prédication. Grâce à ses dons d’orateur et à la connaissance de l’Ecriture, son ministère fut fécond et justifie son titre de ‘’docteur évangélique’’.

Les sages brilleront comme la splendeur du firmament, et ceux qui sont des maîtres de justice pour la multitude resplendiront comme des étoiles, dans les siècles des siècles.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, tu as voulu que ton peuple trouve en saint Antoine de Padoue un grand prédicateur de l’Évangile et un défenseur des pauvres; permets qu’avec son aide, et fidèles à ses leçons de vie chrétienne, nous ressentions dans toutes nos épreuves le bienfait de ton secours. 1ère lecture : 1R 18, 41-46
En ces jours-là, le prophète Élie dit au roi Acab : « Monte, tu peux maintenant manger et boire, car j’entends le grondement de la pluie.» Acab monta pour aller manger et boire. Élie, de son côté, monta sur le sommet du Carmel, il se courba vers la terre et mit son visage entre ses genoux. Il dit à son serviteur : « Monte, et regarde du côté de la mer. » Le serviteur monta, regarda et dit : « Il n’y a rien. » Sept fois de suite, Élie lui dit : « Retourne. » La septième fois, le serviteur annonça: « Voilà un nuage qui monte de la mer, gros comme le poing. » Alors Élie dit au serviteur: « Va dire au roi Acab : “Attelle ton char et descends de la montagne, avant d’être arrêté par la pluie.”» Peu à peu, le ciel s’obscurcit de nuages, poussés par le vent, et il tomba une grosse pluie. Acab monta sur son char et partit pour la ville de Yizréel. La main du Seigneur s’empara du prophète; Élie retroussa son vêtement et courut en avant d’Acab jusqu’à l’entrée de la ville de Yizréel.

Tu visites la terre et tu l’abreuves, tu la combles de richesses ; les ruisseaux de Dieu regorgent ‘eau: tu prépares les moissons.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Je vous le dis : Si votre justice ne surpasse pas celle des scribes et des pharisiens, vous n’entrerez pas dans le royaume des Cieux. Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre, et si quelqu’un commet un meurtre, il devra passer en jugement. Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis : Tout homme qui se met en colère contre son frère devra passer en jugement. Si quelqu’un insulte son frère, il devra passer devant le tribunal. Si quelqu’un le traite de fou, il sera passible de la géhenne de feu. Donc, lorsque tu vas présenter ton offrande à l’autel, si, là, tu te souviens que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi, laisse ton offrande, là, devant l’autel, va d’abord te réconcilier avec ton frère, et ensuite viens présenter ton offrande. Mets-toi vite d’accord avec ton adversaire pendant que tu es en chemin avec lui, pour éviter que ton adversaire ne te livre au juge, le juge au garde, et qu’on ne te jette en prison. Amen, je te le dis: tu n’en sortiras pas avant d’avoir payé jusqu’au dernier sou. »

Déjà réconfortés par le pain du ciel, nous t’adressons, Seigneur, cette humble prière : en suivant les leçons de saint Antoine de Padoue, que nous demeurions dans l’action de grâce pour les dons que nous avons reçus. Par Jésus.
Méditation
La « justice » des scribes et des pharisiens concernait le respect de la Loi juive : ‘’ Faites ceci, ne faites pas cela’’. Mais Jésus demande à ses disciples de pratiquer une justice qui non seulement va plus loin, mais est différente à savoir : ‘Aimer Dieu et son prochain comme soi meme en manifestant cet amour de toutes les manières possibles. Jésus prend au sérieux ce commandement d’amour qu’il place avant « l’offrande » en invitant d’abord à se réconcilier avec l’autre. Une invitation pour nous en ce jour non seulement à aimer, mais à avoir des pensées aimantes. L’Esprit nous appelle à changer ; à devenir une personne plus attentionnée, plus aimable et plus clémente et plus juste.

Saint Antony of Padua

Saint Antony was first of all an Augustinian monk, and later a Franciscan. Illness prevented him going to Africa to preach. His sermons are full of gentleness, but he reproved the wicked with fearless severity – especially backsliding clergy and the oppressors of the weak.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

Almighty ever-living God, who gave Saint Anthony of Padua to your people as an outstanding preacher and an intercessor in their need, grant that, with his assistance, as we follow the teachings of the Christian life, we may know your help in every trial. Ahab mounted his chariot and made for Jezreel. The hand of the Lord was on Elijah, and tucking up his cloak he ran in front of Ahab as far as the outskirts of Jezreel.

Gospel : Matthew 5:20-26
Jesus said to his disciples, If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven. ‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are still on the way to the court with him, or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. I tell you solemnly, you will not get out till you have paid the last penny.’

Through Christ the teacher, O Lord, instruct those you feed with Christ, the living Bread, that on the feast day of Saint Antony of Padua, they may learn your truth and express it in works of charity. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Jesus is warning Christians to deviate from the fake life of those who hide under religious garb and are not close to purity. The righteousness required of us is to avoid anger against our neighbour. The law says, “thou shall not kill”, but anger against one’s neighbour, which is a prelude to murder, negates the show of love expected of a true Christian. Our emotions can be acknowledged but not translated to rage or killing. We need to reconcile with our neighbours to avoid being judged. Above all, we must reconcile with God.
