Née dans une famille de Brabant en Belgique, elle dut affronter le mariage forcé. Traînée par ses parents devant l’autel, elle répondit au chevalier Simon « Non, pas du tout » au moment de l’échange de consentements.

Par le baptême, vous avez été mis au tombeau avec le Christ, avec lui vous avez été ressuscités, parce que vous avez crus en la force de Dieu qui a ressuscité le Christ d’entre les morts, alléluia.

Dieu qui renouvelle par le baptême ceux qui croient en toi, protégé leur naissance dans la Christ: défends les contre les assauts du mal pour qu’ils répondent fidèlement à ta grâce. Par Jésus
1ère lecture : Act 9, 31-42
En ces jours-là, l’Église était en paix dans toute la Judée, la Galilée et la Samarie ; elle se construisait et elle marchait dans la crainte du Seigneur; réconfortée par l’Esprit Saint, elle se multipliait. Or, il arriva que Pierre, parcourant tout le pays, se rendit aussi chez les fidèles qui habitaient Lod. Il y trouva un homme du nom d’Énéas, alité depuis huit ans parce qu’il était paralysé. Pierre lui dit : « Énéas, Jésus Christ te guérit, lève-toi et fais ton lit toi-même. » Et aussitôt il se leva. Alors tous les habitants de Lod et de la plaine de Sarone purent le voir, et ils se convertirent en se tournant vers le Seigneur. Il y avait aussi à Jaffa une femme disciple du Seigneur nommée Tabitha, ce qui se traduit: Dorcas (c’est-à-dire: Gazelle). Elle était riche des bonnes œuvres et des aumônes qu’elle faisait. Or, il arriva en ces jours-là qu’elle tomba malade et qu’elle mourut. Après la toilette funèbre, on la déposa dans la chambre haute. Comme Lod est près de Jaffa, les disciples, apprenant que Pierre s’y trouvait, lui envoyèrent deux hommes avec cet appel: « Viens chez nous sans tarder. » Pierre se mit en route avec eux. À son arrivée on le fit monter à la chambre haute. Toutes les veuves en larmes s’approchèrent de lui ; elles lui montraient les tuniques et les manteaux confectionnés par Dorcas quand celle-ci était avec elles. Pierre mit tout le monde dehors; il se mit à genoux et pria ; puis il se tourna vers le corps, et il dit : « Tabitha, lève-toi !» Elle ouvrit les yeux et, voyant Pierre, elle se redressa et s’assit. Pierre, lui donnant la main, la fit lever. Puis il appela les fidèles et les veuves et la leur présenta vivante. La chose fut connue dans toute la ville de Jaffa, et beaucoup crurent au Seigneur.

Évangile : Jean 6, 60-69
En ce temps-là, Jésus avait donné un enseignement dans la synagogue de Capharnaüm. Beaucoup de ses disciples, qui avaient entendu, déclarèrent: « Cette parole est rude ! Qui peut l’entendre ? » Jésus savait en lui-même que ses disciples récriminaient à son sujet. Il leur dit: « Cela vous scandalise ? Et quand vous verrez le Fils de l’homme monter là où il était auparavant! C’est l’esprit qui fait vivre, la chair n’est capable de rien. Les paroles que je vous ai dites sont esprit et elles sont vie. Mais il y en a parmi vous qui ne croient pas. » Jésus savait en effet depuis le commencement quels étaient ceux qui ne croyaient pas, et qui était celui qui le livrerait. Il ajouta: « Voilà pourquoi je vous ai dit que personne ne peut venir à moi retournèrent et cessèrent de l’accompagner. Alors Jésus dit aux Douze : « Voulez-vous partir, vous aussi ? » Simon-Pierre lui répondit: « Seigneur, à qui irions-nous? Tu as les paroles de la vie éternelle. Quant à nous, nous croyons, et nous savons que tu es le Saint de Dieu. ».
Prière sur les offrandes
Reçois avec bonté Seigneur, les offrandes de ton Peuple : garde le sous ta protection, pour qu’il ne perde aucun des bien que tu lui donne, et découvre ceux qui demeure toujours. Par Jésus.

Jésus priait ainsi : « pour ceux qui croiront en moi, je te demande Père qu’ils soient un en nous afin que le monde reconnaît que tu m’as envoyé», alléluia.

Ne cesse pas de protégé avec amour, Seigneur, ceux que tu as sauvé : la passion de ton Fils les rachetés qu’ils mettent leur joie dans sa résurrection. Lui qui…
Méditation
Dans l’Evangile de ce matin, Jésus nous donne deux informations précieuses : il est l’envoyé du Père et son propre Père est Celui qui amène les hommes vers Lui. De ce fait, la foi n’est pas une initiative purement humaine : elle est proposée et gérée par le Père. Cette attraction se fait à travers la connaissance de Jésus à travers l’écoute quotidienne de la Parole de Dieu et la participation à l’Eucharistie. Il nous donne son corps et son sang pour que nous soyons purifiés de tout ce que pourrait encore entraver notre être avec Lui. C’est en Lui que nous trouvons le Pain pour la route qui mène au Père.

Violet
La noble Perpétue venait d’être mère ; Félicité l’esclave, allait enfanter en prison. Toutes deux étaient chrétiennes. Tandis que Félicité gémissait dans les douleurs de l’enfantement, son geôlier lui dit : ‘’Si tu te plains déjà maintenant, que sera-ce quand tu seras exposée aux bêtes ? Il eût donc bien mieux valu sacrifier aux dieux !’’ Félicité rétorqua : ‘’Aujourd’hui, c’est moi qui souffre ; demain, un Autre en moi souffrira pour moi, parce que je souffrirai pour Lui.’’ Le supplice des deux femmes et de trois autres chrétiens eut lieu dans l’amphithéâtre de Carthage, le 7 mars 203.

Nous t’en supplions humblement, Seigneur : à mesure qu’approche le jour où nous fêterons notre salut, accorde-nous une plus grande générosité pour nous préparer à célébrer le mystère pascal. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Jérémie 7, 23-28
Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Voici l’ordre que j’ai donné à vos pères :« Écoutez ma voix :je serai votre Dieu, et vous, vous serez mon peuple ;vous suivrez tous les chemins que je vous prescris, afin que vous soyez heureux. »Mais ils n’ont pas écouté, ils n’ont pas prêté l’oreille, ils ont suivi les mauvais penchants de leur cœur endurci ;ils ont tourné leur dos et non leur visage. Depuis le jour où vos pères sont sortis du pays d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour, j’ai envoyé vers vous, inlassablement, tous mes serviteurs les prophètes. Entrez, inclinez-vous, prosternez-vous, adorons le Seigneur qui nous a faits. Oui, il est notre Dieu; nous sommes le peuple qu’il conduit.
Aujourd’hui écouterez-vous sa parole ? « Ne fermez pas votre cœur comme au désert, comme au jour de tentation et de défi, où vos pères m’ont tenté et provoqué. »

Évangile : Luc 11, 14-23
En ce temps-là, Jésus expulsait un démon qui rendait un homme muet. Lorsque le démon fut sorti, le muet se mit à parler, et les foules furent dans l’admiration. Mais certains d’entre eux dirent: « C’est par Béelzéboul, le chef des démons, qu’il expulse les démons.» D’autres, pour le mettre à l’épreuve, cherchaient à obtenir de lui un signe venant du ciel. Jésus, connaissant leurs pensées, leur dit :« Tout royaume divisé contre lui-même devient désert, ses maisons s’écroulent les unes sur les autres. Si Satan, lui aussi, est divisé contre lui-même, comment son royaume tiendra-t-il ? Vous dites en effet que c’est par Béelzéboul que j’expulse les démons. Mais si c’est par Béelzéboul que moi, je les expulse, vos disciples, par qui les expulsent-ils ? Dès lors, ils seront eux-mêmes vos juges. En revanche, si c’est par le doigt de Dieu que j’expulse les démons, c’est donc que le règne de Dieu est venu jusqu’à vous. Quand l’homme fort, et bien armé, garde son palais, tout ce qui lui appartient est en sécurité. Mais si un plus fort survient et triomphe de lui, il lui enlève son armement, auquel il se fiait, et il distribue tout ce dont il l’a dépouillé. Celui qui n’est pas avec moi est contre moi; celui qui ne rassemble pas avec moi disperse» .
Prière sur les offrandes
Pour que nos offrandes soient recevables, Seigneur, purifie-nous de toute atteinte du péché: ne permets pas que de fausses richesses nous retiennent quand tu veux nous mener à la vérité tout entière. Par Jésus.

Tu as ordonné, Seigneur, de garder fidèlement tes préceptes; puissions-nous avancer au droit chemin selon tes commandements.
Prière après la communion
Seigneur, que ton secours ne manque jamais à ceux que tu as nourris de tes sacrements, afin que nous puissions dans ces mystères et par toute notre vie, recueillir les fruits de ta rédemption. Par Jésus.
Méditation
L’incrédulité n’est pas que ce refus de croire que Jésus est l’Envoyé de Dieu venu nous sauver, par lequel brillent certaines personnes de la foule, témoin de ses haut-faits. Elle est aussi le refus d’écouter le Seigneur Dieu dont a fait montre le peuple d’Israël auquel le prophète Jérémie fut entre autres envoyé. Si croire en Dieu c’est l’écouter, et vice-versa, croire en Lui c’est croire aussi en celui qu’il a envoyé dans le monde, Jésus Christ. Il est le plus fort venu dépouiller l’homme fort, Satan, et détruire dans nos vies toutes ses œuvres dont le péché est la première. Ne soyons qu’avec lui, pour rassembler et non disperser.

Née à Corbie, en Picardie, elle est le fruit de l’intercession de saint Nicolas. En effet, ses parents se désolant de ne pas avoir d’enfants prièrent ce saint. Lorsqu’ils reçurent cette petite fille, ils lui donnèrent le nom de Nicole, devenu aussi, en diminutif familier, Colette.

Seigneur, tu nous accordes ce temps de Carême pour nous former à la vie avec le Christ et nous alimenter de ta parole ; que notre effort de pénitence nous obtienne la fidélité à te servir et le goût de te prier d’un même cœur. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Dt 4, 1.5-9
Moïse disait au peuple: « Maintenant, Israël, écoute les décrets et les ordonnances que je vous enseigne pour que vous les mettiez en pratique. Amen, je vous le dis: Avant que le ciel et la terre disparaissent, pas un seul iota, pas un seul trait ne disparaîtra de la Loi jusqu’à ce que tout se réalise. Donc, celui qui rejettera un seul de ces plus petits commandements, et qui enseignera aux hommes à faire ainsi, sera déclaré le plus petit dans le royaume des Cieux. Méditation
Y a-t-il une loi aussi juste que celle que le Seigneur Dieu a donnée au peuple d’Israël ? Le monde, dans ses équilibres, tient sur elle, de sorte que la vie sur terre ne serait que meilleure et très harmonieuse, si nous la respections tous. Elle est d’autant parfaite qu’un seul iota n’y disparaîtra, avant que s’accomplisse ce que disent la Torah et les Prophètes. Tout cela, Jésus n’est pas venu l’abolir ou le détruire, mais l’accomplir, c’est-à-dire le mener à la plénitude. Car c’est bien lui qui nous révèle la Loi de Dieu dans son sens plénier, à savoir : l’amour. Ainsi, la loi de l’amour peut-elle prendre le pas dans nos vies sur l’amour de la Loi, tel qu’il voulut le révéler à ses frères juifs.

Se distinguant par sa sagesse et l’intégrité de sa vie, il seconda les efforts du pape saint Victor pour faire célébrer en Asie la fête de Pâques un dimanche et non pas au jour anniversaire du 14 nisan. Il s’appuyait sur le fait que Pâques n’est pas la commémoration de la Résurrection.

Je t’appelle, mon Dieu, toi qui peux me répondre : écoute-moi ! Entends ce que je dis ! Garde-moi comme la prunelle de l’œil ; sois mon abri, protège-moi.

Ne nous prive pas de ta grâce, Dieu fidèle : qu’elle nous consacre à ton service et nous assiste toujours. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Dn 3, 25.34-43
En ces jours- là, Azarias, debout, priait ainsi ; au milieu du feu, ouvrant la bouche, il dit : À cause de ton nom, ne nous livre pas pour toujours et ne romps pas ton alliance. Ne nous retire pas ta miséricorde, à cause d’Abraham, ton ami, d’Isaac, ton serviteur, et d’Israël que tu as consacré. Tu as dit que tu rendrais leur descendance aussi nombreuse que les astres du ciel, que le sable au rivage des mers. Or nous voici, ô Maître, le moins nombreux de tous les peuples, humiliés aujourd’hui sur toute la terre, à cause de nos péchés. Il n’est plus, en ce temps, ni prince ni chef ni prophète, plus d’holocauste ni de sacrifice, plus d’oblation ni d’offrande d’encens, plus de lieu où t’offrir nos prémices pour obtenir ta miséricorde. Mais, avec nos cœurs brisés, nos esprits humiliés, reçois-nous, comme un holocauste de béliers, de taureaux, d’agneaux gras par milliers. Que notre sacrifice, en ce jour, trouve grâce devant toi, car il n’est pas de honte pour qui espère en toi. Et maintenant, de tout cœur, nous te suivons, nous te craignons et nous cherchons ta face. Ne nous laisse pas dans la honte, agis envers nous selon ton indulgence et l’abondance de ta miséricorde. Délivre- nous en renouvelant tes merveilles, glorifie ton nom, Seigneur.

Évangile : Mt 18, 21-35
En ce temps- là, Pierre s’approcha de Jésus pour lui demander : « Seigneur, lorsque mon frère commettra des fautes contre moi, combien de fois dois-je lui pardonner ? Jusqu’à sept fois ? » Jésus lui répondit : « Je ne te dis pas jusqu’à sept fois, mais jusqu’à 70 fois sept fois. Ainsi, le royaume des Cieux est comparable à un roi qui voulut régler ses comptes avec ses serviteurs. Il commençait, quand on lui amena quelqu’un qui lui devait dix mille talents (c’est-à-dire soixante millions de pièces d’argent). Comme cet homme n’avait pas de quoi rembourser, le maître ordonna de le vendre, avec sa femme, ses enfants et tous ses biens, en remboursement de sa dette. Alors, tombant à ses pieds, le serviteur demeurait prosterné et disait: “Prends patience envers moi, et je te rembourserai tout.” Saisi de compassion, le maître de ce serviteur le laissa partir et lui remit sa dette. Mais, en sortant, ce serviteur trouva un de ses compagnons qui lui devait cent pièces d’argent. Il se jeta sur lui pour l’étrangler, en disant : “Rembourse ta dette !” Alors, tombant à ses pieds, son compagnon le suppliait: “Prends patience envers moi, et je te rembourserai.” Mais l’autre refusa et le fit jeter en prison jusqu’à ce qu’il ait remboursé ce qu’il devait. Ses compagnons, voyant cela, furent profondément attristés et allèrent raconter à leur maître tout ce qui s’était passé. Alors celui-ci le fit appeler et lui dit : “Serviteur mauvais ! je t’avais remis toute cette dette parce que tu m’avais supplié. Ne devais-tu pas, à ton tour, avoir pitié de ton compagnon, comme moi-même j’avais eu pitié de toi ?” Dans sa colère, son maître le livra aux bourreaux jusqu’à ce qu’il eût remboursé tout ce qu’il devait. C’est ainsi que mon Père du ciel vous traitera, si chacun de vous ne pardonne pas à son frère du fond du cœur. »

Nous t’en prions, Dieu tout-puissant : que ce sacrifice offert pour notre salut nous guérisse de toute faiblesse et attire sur nous ta puissance. Par Jésus.

Méditation
La leçon de la parabole du débiteur impitoyable est claire et répond à suffisance à la question de la délimitation du pardon à offrir au frère ou à la sœur fautive : il faut toujours tout pardonner, quelle que soit la dette ou la faute de l’autre, puisque Dieu lui-même nous remet toutes nos lourdes dettes, comme ce roi de la parabole. Le rapport ô combien disproportionné de la dette dûe et de celle réclamée par ce débiteur impitoyable devrait d’ailleurs nous convaincre que nous avons d’autant à pardonner les autres que Dieu nous pardonne aussi et beaucoup plus encore que nous ne leur reprochons. C’est en raison de cette grande miséricorde de Dieu que Azarias peut prier le Seigneur de pardonner les péchés de son peuple. Et si comme lui nous faisions, mieux que garder rancune ou accuser les fautes des autres, prier pour le pardon des péchés de tous ?

When the reckoning began, they brought him a man who owed ten thousand talents; but he had no means of paying, so his master gave orders that he should be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, to meet the debt. At this, the servant threw himself down at his master’s feet. “Give me time” he said “and I will pay the whole sum.” And the servant’s master felt so sorry for him that he let him go and cancelled the debt. Now as this servant went out, he happened to meet a fellow servant who owed him one hundred denarii; and he seized him by the throat and began to throttle him. “Pay what you owe me” he said. His fellow servant fell at his feet and implored him, saying, “Give me time and I will pay you.” But the other would not agree; on the contrary, he had him thrown into prison till he should pay the debt. His fellow servants were deeply distressed when they saw what had happened, and they went to their master and reported the whole affair to him. Then the master sent for him. “You wicked servant,” he said “I cancelled all that debt of yours when you appealed to me. Were you not bound, then, to have pity on your fellow servant just as I had pity on you?” And in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers till he should pay all his debt. And that is how my heavenly Father will deal with you unless you each forgive your brother from your heart.’

Meditation
The mercy of God is limitless. He always fills us with his blessings, even though sometimes we do not deserve them because our behaviour deviates from his sovereign will. If this is the case, we are invited into the Matthean pericope today to exert ourselves in forgiving our brothers and sisters since we receive forgiveness from God. Unfortunately, we also sometimes behave like ruthless debtor, thinking we are the only ones who benefit from God’s forgiveness and not others. We hardly forgive ourselves when we offend our fellow brethren consciously or unconsciously. But let us know that we will benefit from God’s forgiveness as we will always forgive our brothers. May the God of infinite goodness transform our hearts of stone into hearts of flesh, rich in love and forgiveness.

Saint Casimir
(1458 – 1484)
Purple
He was the second son of King Casimir IV of Poland. He assiduously cultivated the Christian virtues, especially chastity and generosity to the poor. He died of tuberculosis on 4 March 1484.

Naaman, army commander to the king of Aram, was a man who enjoyed his master’s respect and favour, since through him the Lord had granted victory to the Aramaeans. But the man was a leper. Now on one of their raids, the Aramaeans had carried off from the land of Israel a little girl who had become a servant of Naaman’s wife. ‘She said to her mistress, ‘If only my master would approach the prophet of Samaria. He would cure him of his leprosy.’ Naaman went and told his master. ‘This and this’ he reported ‘is what the girl from the land of Israel said.’ ‘Go by all means,’ said the king of Aram ‘I will send a letter to the king of Israel.’ So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten festal robes. Meditation
In the Gospel, the people today do not believe in Jesus because they are aware of his family’s history. In the verses that came before this one, the people were praising him for the great words that he had said. In later attempts, they targeted him because they were familiar with his father. The same crowd that had been praising Jesus before he used a parable to correct them turned around and tried to kill him. Do you disregard the truth simply because of who is expressing it? The words of Jesus may sting, but they are nonetheless the truth that leads to everlasting life.

Second reading: 1 Corinthians 1:22-25
While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom, here are we preaching a crucified Christ; to the Jews an obstacle that they cannot get over, to the pagans madness, but to those who have been called, whether they are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is the power and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

Gospel: John 2:13-25
Just before the Jewish Passover Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and in the Temple he found people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting at their counters there. Making a whip out of some cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well, scattered the money-changers’ coins, knocked their tables over and said to the pigeon-sellers, ‘Take all this out of here and stop turning my Father’s house into a market.’ Then his disciples remembered the words of scripture: Zeal for your house will devour me. The Jews intervened and said, ‘What sign can you show us to justify what you have done?’ Jesus answered, ‘Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews replied, ‘It has taken forty-six years to build this sanctuary: are you going to raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the words he had said. During his stay in Jerusalem for the Passover many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he gave, but Jesus knew them all and did not trust himself to them; he never needed evidence about any man; he could tell what a man had in him.

Meditation
The temple is the place of the presence of God and the bond of the regular encounter with Him. From this perspective, we build beautiful Churches with the tabernacles that mark his permanent presence. Regrettably, some transform their churches into markets, people eating and leaving dirt while keeping their homes neat in the neighbourhood or village. The true temple of God to maintain is our heart. We must always work that it is not defiled by sin, for it is the abode of God. We have to free our bodies from all pride and arrogance and give God first place. If we ignore God in our lives, so will it be the same with our brethren. May the Lord help us purify our hearts so that they are worthy to welcome him and constitute his true home.

Saint Chad
(-672)
Purple
Chad was born in Northumbria, one of four brothers, all of whom became priests. He was educated under St Aidan and partly in Ireland. Chad was outstanding for his humility and simplicity of life. He died of the plague on 2 March 672.

The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in mercy. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures.

The tax collectors and the sinners were all seeking the company of Jesus to hear what he had to say, and the Pharisees and the scribes complained. ‘This man’ they said ‘welcomes sinners and eats with them.’ So he spoke this parable to them: ‘A man had two sons. The younger said to his father, “Father, let me have the share of the estate that would come to me.” So the father divided the property between them. A few days later, the younger son got together everything he had and left for a distant country where he squandered his money on a life of debauchery. ‘When he had spent it all, that country experienced a severe famine, and now he began to feel the pinch, so he hired himself out to one of the local inhabitants who put him on his farm to feed the pigs. And he would willingly have filled his belly with the husks the pigs were eating but no one offered him anything. Then he came to his senses and said, “How many of my father’s paid servants have more food than they want, and here am I dying of hunger! May the ears of your mercy be open, O Lord, to the prayers of those who call upon you; and that you may grant what they desire, have them ask what is pleasing to you. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The story of the lost son shows us that God is a loving, merciful Father who always forgives his children. Our God loves and forgives even those who have done the worst sins, as long as they admit them, do penance, and ask God to forgive them through the sacrament of reconciliation. He will be delighted to have us there. It would also be important that, after being forgiven, we decide not to make the same mistakes again. This is what the wayward son did when he realised he had gone wrong. We also shouldn’t act like some Scribes and Pharisees of Jesus’s time, which the older son symbolises in this story. They think they are holy and don’t need to change, and they don’t understand that Christ must go to sinners to save them. May God give us the humility of the lost son so that we can admit our mistakes and move towards God’s forgiveness, which sets us free.

The earliest life of St David dates from five centuries after his death in 589. He became abbot and bishop at Mynyw. He is credited with a monastic rule and also with a Penitentiary.

First reading : Genesis 37:3-4,12-13,17-28
Israel loved Joseph more than all his other sons, for he was the son of his old age, and he had a coat with long sleeves made for him. But his brothers, seeing how his father loved him more than all his other sons, came to hate him so much that they could not say a civil word to him. His brothers went to pasture their father’s flock at Shechem. Then Israel said to Joseph, ‘Are not your brothers with the flock at Shechem? Come, I am going to send you to them.’ So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan. They saw him in the distance, and before he reached them they made a plot among themselves to put him to death. ‘Here comes the man of dreams’ they said to one another. ‘Come on, let us kill him and throw him into some well; we can say that a wild beast devoured him. They then sat down to eat. Looking up they saw a group of Ishmaelites who were coming from Gilead, their camels laden with gum, tragacanth, balsam and resin, which they were taking down into Egypt. Then Judah said to his brothers, ‘What do we gain by killing our brother and covering up his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, but let us not do any harm to him. After all, he is our brother, and our own flesh.’ His brothers agreed. Now some Midianite merchants were passing, and they drew Joseph up out of the well. They sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty silver pieces, and these men took Joseph to Egypt.

When vintage time drew near he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his servants, thrashed one, killed another and stoned a third. Next he sent some more servants, this time a larger number, and they dealt with them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them. “They will respect my son” he said. But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, “This is the heir. Come on, let us kill him and take over his inheritance.” So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?’ They answered, ‘He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will deliver the produce to him when the season arrives.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the Scriptures: It was the stone rejected by the builders That became the keystone. This was the Lord’s doing and it is wonderful to see?’ I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.’ When they heard his parables, the chief priests and the Scribes realized he was speaking about them, but though they would have liked to arrest him they were afraid of the crowds, who looked on him as a prophet.

Meditation
A young man came home after receiving an inferior grade on the final school day. When he saw his parents sitting at the table, he threw the report card at them and asked, «Now tell me, Dad, who is to blame, my teachers or heredity?» He did this as quickly as possible. Jesus is directing our focus today to the topic of the results. Because the tenant farmers could not achieve satisfactory results with the farm, they resorted to violent conflict and the taking of lives. Are you getting positive outcomes from your efforts, or are they turning you into a more nasty and aggressive person? It doesn’t matter how often you fail; you are not a failure until you start blaming others. Let us cling to the God of successful outcomes before he takes away our chance to try again.

Auguste Chapdelaine est un prêtre-missionnaire catholique, né à La Rochelle-Normande (Manche) le 6 janvier 1814 et mort en Chine, dans la Province du Kouang-si (Guangxi) en 1856. Il a été béatifié le 27 mai 1900 par le pape Léon XIII et canonisé le Ier octobre 2000 par le pape Jean-Paul II, parmi les 120 chrétiens morts en Chine entre les XVI et XXe siècles.

Scrute-moi, mon Dieu, et tu connaîtras mon cœur. Vois si le mal ne fait pas en moi son chemin et conduis-moi sur le chemin d’éternité.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui aimes l’innocence et la fais recouvrer, oriente vers toi le cœur de tes fidèles, pour que, dociles à ton Esprit, ils soient fermes dans la foi et vraiment efficaces. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Jr 17, 5-10
Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Maudit soit l’homme qui met sa foi dans un mortel, qui s’appuie sur un être de chair, tandis que son cœur se détourne du Seigneur. Il sera comme un buisson sur une terre désolée, il ne verra pas venir le bonheur. Il aura pour demeure les lieux arides du désert, une terre salée, inhabitable. Béni soit l’homme qui met sa foi dans le Seigneur, dont le Seigneur est la confiance. Il sera comme un arbre, planté près des eaux, qui pousse, vers le courant, ses racines. Il ne craint pas quand vient la chaleur: son feuillage reste vert. L’année de la sécheresse, il est sans inquiétude : il ne manque pas de porter du fruit. Rien n’est plus faux que le cœur de l’homme, il est incurable. Qui peut le connaître ? Moi, le Seigneur, qui pénètre les cœurs et qui scrute les reins, afin de rendre à chacun selon sa conduite, selon le fruit de ses actes.

R/ Heureux est l’homme qui met sa foi dans le Seigneur.
Heureux est l’homme qui n’entre pas au conseil des méchants, qui ne suit pas le chemin des pécheurs, ne siège pas avec ceux qui ricanent, mais se plaît dans la loi du Seigneur et murmure sa loi jour et nuit !
Il est comme un arbre planté près d’un ruisseau, qui donne du fruit en son temps, et jamais son feuillage ne meurt ; tout ce qu’il entreprend réussira, tel n’est pas le sort des méchants.
Mais ils sont comme la paille balayée par le vent : au jugement, les méchants ne se lèveront pas, ni les pécheurs au rassemblement des justes. Le Seigneur connaît le chemin des justes, mais le chemin des méchants se perdra.

Évangile : Lc 16, 19-31
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait aux pharisiens : « Il y avait un homme riche, vêtu de pourpre et de lin fin, qui faisait chaque jour des festins somptueux. Devant son portail gisait un pauvre nommé Lazare, qui était couvert d’ulcères. Il aurait bien voulu se rassasier de ce qui tombait de la table du riche ; mais les chiens, eux, venaient lécher ses ulcères. Or le pauvre mourut, et les anges l’emportèrent auprès d’Abraham. Le riche mourut aussi, et on l’enterra. Au séjour des morts, il était en proie à la torture; levant les yeux, il vit Abraham de loin et Lazare tout près de lui. Alors il cria : “Père Abraham, prends pitié de moi et envoie Lazare tremper le bout de son doigt dans l’eau pour me rafraîchir la langue, car je souffre terriblement dans cette fournaise. – Mon enfant, répondit Abraham, rappelle- toi: tu as reçu le bonheur pendant ta vie, et Lazare, le malheur pendant la sienne. Maintenant, lui, il trouve ici la consolation, et toi, la souffrance. Et en plus de tout cela, un grand abîme a été établi entre vous et nous, pour que ceux qui voudraient passer vers vous ne le puissent pas, et que, de là- bas non plus, on ne traverse pas vers nous.” Le riche répliqua : “Eh bien! père, je te prie d’envoyer Lazare dans la maison de mon père. En effet, j’ai cinq frères : qu’il leur porte son témoignage, de peur qu’eux aussi ne viennent dans ce lieu de torture !” Abraham lui dit: “Ils ont Moïse et les Prophètes: qu’ils les écoutent! – Non, père Abraham, dit- il, mais si quelqu’un de chez les morts vient les trouver, ils se convertiront.” Abraham répondit: “S’ils n’écoutent pas Moïse ni les Prophètes, quelqu’un pourra bien ressusciter d’entre les morts : ils ne seront pas convaincus.” »

Par cette Eucharistie, Seigneur, sanctifie nos œuvres de pénitence, pour que l’entraînement du carême aboutisse à la vraie conversion du cœur. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Bien-aimés de Dieu, la parabole de Lazare et du riche que Luc nous présente en ce jour nous indique clairement que c’est la qualité de vie que nous menons chaque jour qui définira notre destination finale après la vie présente. Ainsi, si nous sommes méchants, avares, insensibles aux besoins de notre entourage, et installés dans l’opulence, nous pouvons certes être heureux en ce monde, mais vivre malheureux pour l’éternité. D’où la nécessité pour nous de vivre dans l’humilité, la simplicité et la crainte de Dieu pour recevoir en héritage la vie éternelle.
