1ère lecture : Jc 1, 12-18
Heureux l’homme qui supporte l’épreuve avec persévérance, car, sa valeur une fois vérifiée, il recevra la couronne de la vie promise à ceux qui aiment Dieu. Dans l’épreuve de la tentation, que personne ne dise: « Ma tentation vient de Dieu. » Dieu, en effet, ne peut être tenté de faire le mal, et lui-même ne tente personne. Chacun est tenté par sa propre convoitise qui l’entraîne et le séduit. Puis la convoitise conçoit et enfante le péché, et le péché, arrivé à son terme, engendre la mort. Ne vous y trompez pas, mes frères bien-aimés, les présents les meilleurs, les dons parfaits, proviennent tous d’en haut, ils descendent d’auprès du Père des lumières, lui qui n’est pas, comme les astres, sujet au mouvement périodique ni aux éclipses. Il a voulu nous engendrer par sa parole de vérité, pour faire de nous comme les prémices de toutes ses créatures.

Prenez garde au levain des pharisiens et au levain d’Hérode ! » Mais ils discutaient entre eux sur ce manque de pains. Jésus s’en rend compte et leur dit: « Pourquoi discutez-vous sur ce manque de pains ? Vous ne saisissez pas ? Vous ne comprenez pas encore? Vous avez le cœur endurci ? Vous avez des yeux et vous ne voyez pas, vous avez des oreilles et vous n’entendez pas ! Vous ne vous rappelez pas? Quand j’ai rompu les cinq pains pour cinq mille personnes, combien avez-vous ramassé de paniers pleins de morceaux ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Douze. – Et quand j’en ai rompu sept pour quatre mille, combien avez-vous rempli de corbeilles en ramassant les morceaux ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Sept. » Il leur disait: « Vous ne comprenez pas encore?»

Méditation
Bien-aimés de Dieu, dans l’extrait de l’évangile de ce jour, la lenteur des disciples à croire en Jésus est mise en lumière. En effet, Jésus s’étonne de constater que malgré les signes accomplis devant leurs yeux, les disciples n’ont pas encore atteint une foi convaincue en leur Maître. Ils tardent à comprendre que Jésus est la solution à tous leurs problèmes et qu’avec lui, ils n’ont plus à s’inquiéter. Ils doivent seulement croire.

Meditation
There’s something incredibly human and heartbreaking about Jesus sighing. We groan when we realise that nothing we say or do makes sense to people around us. We sigh as unimaginable grief wells up inside us. God sighs when he sees in us weak faith and willful opposition to truth, which hinders the Spirit from entering our hearts. The Pharisees’ desire for a sign revealed their lack of confidence in Jesus since they had already decided he was working with Beelzebul (Mk 3:22). Jesus goes without satisfying them because he knew their minds were wholly locked and that no indication would persuade them differently. True faith requires no signs; it simply believes, trusts, and loves—the type of faith James encourages us to embrace in his message today.

Jacques, serviteur de Dieu et du Seigneur Jésus Christ, aux douze tribus de la Diaspora, salut! Considérez comme une joie extrême, mes frères, de buter sur toute sorte d’épreuves. Vous le savez, une telle vérification de votre foi produit l’endurance, et l’endurance doit s’accompagner d’une action parfaite, pour que vous soyez parfaits et intègres, sans que rien ne vous manque. Mais si l’un de vous manque de sagesse, qu’il la demande à Dieu, lui qui donne à tous sans réserve et sans faire de reproches : elle lui sera donnée. Mais qu’il demande avec foi, sans la moindre hésitation, car celui qui hésite ressemble aux vagues de la mer que le vent agite et soulève. Qu’il ne s’imagine pas, cet homme-là, qu’il recevra du Seigneur quoi que ce soit, s’il est partagé, instable dans toute sa conduite. Que le frère d’humble condition tire sa fierté d’être élevé, et le riche, d’être humilié, car il passera comme l’herbe en fleur. En effet, le soleil s’est levé, ainsi que le vent brûlant, il a desséché l’herbe, sa fleur est tombée, la beauté de son aspect a disparu; de même, le riche se flétrira dans toutes ses entreprises.

Méditation
Saint Marc dans son évangile de ce jour nous présente Jésus aux prises avec les pharisiens ses adversaires. Ceux-ci, dans leur effort pour le faire tomber, lui demande un signe. Cette attitude qui en réalité trahit leur incrédulité va beaucoup décevoir Jésus. D’où sa décision de partir de là, sans faire de miracle.

Ainsi, moi-même, en toute circonstance, je tâche de m’adapter à tout le monde, sans chercher mon intérêt personnel, mais celui de la multitude des hommes, pour qu’ils soient sauvés. Imitez-moi, comme moi aussi j’imite le Christ.

En ce temps-là, un lépreux vint auprès de Jésus ; il le supplia et, tombant à ses genoux, lui dit : « Si tu le veux, tu peux me purifier.» Saisi de compassion, Jésus étendit la main, le toucha et lui dit : « Je le veux, sois purifié. » À l’instant même, la lèpre le quitta et il fut purifié. Avec fermeté, Jésus le renvoya aussitôt en lui disant : « Attention, ne dis rien à personne, mais va te montrer au prêtre, et donne pour ta purification ce que Moïse a prescrit dans la Loi : cela sera pour les gens un témo gnage. » Une fois parti, cet homme se mit à proclamer et à répandre la nouvelle, de sorte que Jésus ne pouvait plus entrer ouvertement dans une ville, mais restait à l’écart, dans des endroits déserts. De partout cependant on venait à lui.

Médiation
Le geste affectueux de Jésus qui s’approche des lépreux, les réconfortant et les guérissant, a sa pleine et mystérieuse expression dans la Passion : martyrisé et défiguré par la sueur de sang, par la flagellation, par le couronnement d’épines, par la crucifixion, lui, abandonné par la population oublieuse de ses bienfaits, dans la Passion, s’identifie avec les lépreux, devient l’image et le symbole de ceux-ci, comme en avait eu l’intuition le prophète Isaïe, contemplant le mystère du serviteur de Yahvé : Il n’a ni éclat ni prestance… méprisé, objet de l’abandon des hommes… pareil à celui dont on détourne la face… Et nous, nous l’avons considéré comme puni, frappé par Dieu et humilié (Isaïe 53.2-4). Mais c’est précisément des plaies du corps martyrisé de Jésus et de la puissance de sa résurrection que jaillissent la vie et l’espérance pour tous les hommes frappés du mal et des infirmités.

The man must be taken to Aaron, the priest, or to one of the priests who are his sons. ‘The man is leprous: he is unclean. The priest must declare him unclean; he is suffering from leprosy of the head. A man infected with leprosy must wear his clothing torn and his hair disordered; he must shield his upper lip and cry, “Unclean, unclean.” As long as the disease lasts he must be unclean; and therefore he must live apart: he must live outside the camp.’

Gospel: Mark 1:40-45
A leper came to Jesus and pleaded on his knees: ‘If you want to’ he said ‘you can cure me.’ Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him. ‘Of course I want to!’ he said. ‘Be cured!’ And the leprosy left him at once and he was cured. Jesus immediately sent him away and sternly ordered him, ‘Mind you say nothing to anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your healing prescribed by Moses as evidence of your recovery.’ The man went away, but then started talking about it freely and telling the story everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer go openly into any town, but had to stay outside in places where nobody lived. Even so, people from all around would come to him.

Meditation
Jesus cures a man afflicted with leprosy (a term referring to any repulsive skin disease). A leper comes to Jesus and begs to be cured. Moved with compassion, Jesus touches the “untouchable” and heals him. He then sends him to a priest to be reinstated into the community. Leprosy, a contagious skin disease suspected by the contemporaries of Jesus, had very little tolerance in Israel. In Mark, we manifest the formidable freedom and the force of Jesus concerning this disease. The patient advances towards Jesus and expresses his faith remarkably: “If you want to…you can cure me..” The distress of man moves Jesus. Jesus touches the leprous one and says to him: “Of course, I want to!” Jesus is the one who seizes our infirmities, cures them and reintroduces us within our social framework.

Sœur de S. Benoît, Scholastique (vers 480-547) se consacra à Dieu comme son frère, en devenant moniale. Saint Grégoire le Grand a raconté le dernier entretien de ces deux contemplatifs, entretien qu’un orage, obtenu par la prière de Scholastique, força Benoît à prolonger toute la nuit. ‘’Plus grande était sa puissance, dit S. Grégoire, parce que son amour était plus grand’’.

Vigilante et fidèle, sainte Scholastique a gardé sa lampe allumée pour sortir à la rencontre du Christ.

1ère lecture : 1 R 12, 26-32 ; 13, 33-34
En ces jours-là, devenu roi des dix tribus d’Israël, Jéroboam se dit: « Maintenant, le royaume risque fort de se rallier de nouveau à la maison de David. Si le peuple continue de monter à Jérusalem pour offrir des sacrifices dans la maison du Seigneur, le cœur de ce peuple reviendra vers son souverain, Roboam, roi de Juda, et l’on me tuera. » Après avoir tenu conseil, Jéroboam fit fabriquer deux veaux en or, et il déclara au peuple: « Voilà trop longtemps que vous montez à Jérusalem! Israël, voici tes dieux, qui t’ont fait monter du pays d’Égypte.» Il plaça l’un des deux veaux à Béthel, l’autre à Dane, et ce fut un grand péché. Le peuple conduisit en procession celui qui allait à Dane. Jéroboam y établit un temple à la manière des lieux sacrés. Il institua des prêtres pris n’importe où, et qui n’étaient pas des descendants de Lévi. Jéroboam célébra la fête le quinzième jour du huitième mois, fête pareille à celle que l’on célébrait en Juda, et il monta à l’autel. Il fit de même à Béthel en offrant des sacrifices aux veaux qu’il avait fabriqués; il établit à Béthel les prêtres des lieux sacrés qu’il avait institués. Jéroboam persévéra dans sa mauvaise conduite; il continua d’instituer n’importe qui comme prêtres des lieux sacrés: il donnait l’investiture à tous ceux qui le désiraient, pour en faire des prêtres des lieux sacrés. Tout cela fit tomber dans le péché la maison de Jéroboam, entraîna sa ruine et provoqua sa disparition de la surface de la terre.

R/ Souviens-toi de nous, Seigneur, dans ta bienveillance pour ton peuple.
Avec nos pères, nous avons péché, nous avons failli et renié. En Égypte, nos pères ont méconnu tes miracles, oublié l’abondance de tes grâces.
À l’Horeb ils fabriquent un veau, ils adorent un objet en métal: ils échangeaient ce qui était leur gloire pour l’image d’un taureau, d’un ruminant.
Ils oublient le Dieu qui les sauve, qui a fait des prodiges en Égypte, des miracles au pays de Cham, des actions terrifiantes sur la mer Rouge.

Alléluia, alléluia! L’homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais de toute parole qui sort de la bouche de Dieu. Alléluia. (cf. Jc 1, 21bc)
Évangile : Mc 8, 1-10
En ces jours-là, comme il y avait de nouveau une grande foule, et que les gens n’avaient rien à manger, Jésus appelle à lui ses disciples et leur dit: « J’ai de la compassion pour cette foule, car depuis trois jours déjà ils restent auprès de moi, et n’ont rien à manger. Si je les renvoie chez eux à jeun, ils vont défaillir en chemin, et certains d’entre eux sont venus de loin. » Ses disciples lui répondirent: « Où donc pourra-t-on trouver du pain pour les rassasier ici, dans le désert? » Il leur demanda : « Combien de pains avez-vous ? » Ils lui dirent: « Sept. » Alors il ordonna à la foule de s’asseoir par terre. Puis, prenant les sept pains et rendant grâce, il les rompit, et il les donnait à ses disciples pour que ceux-ci les distribuent ; et ils les distribuèrent à la foule. Ils avaient aussi quelques petits poissons, que Jésus bénit et fit aussi distribuer. Les gens mangèrent et furent rassasiés. On ramassa les morceaux qui restaient: cela faisait sept corbeilles. Or, ils étaient environ quatre mille. Puis Jésus les renvoya. Aussitôt, montant dans la barque avec ses disciples, il alla dans la région de Dalmanoutha.

Méditation
Le miracle de la multiplication des pains que Marc nous présente dans l’évangile de ce matin dévoile la compassion de Jésus pour la misère de son peuple. Après avoir abreuvé, par sa Parole, la faim et la soif de la foule qui le suivait, Jésus va prendre sur lui d’apaiser leur faim de la nourriture physique. Ce passage nous apprend que la compassion de Dieu appelle toujours un apport de notre générosité humaine, comme en témoignent les sept pains et quelques poissons apportés par les disciples et que Jésus transforme en nourriture pour la multitude.

She was born in Nursia in about 480, the twin sister of St Benedict. She was dedicated to God from an early age and followed her brother to Cassino, where she died in about 547.

First reading: 1 Kings 12:26-32,13:33-34
Jeroboam thought to himself, ‘As things are, the kingdom will revert to the House of David. If this people continues to go up to the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices, the people’s heart will turn back again to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will put me to death.’ So the king thought this over and then made two golden calves; he said to the people, ‘You have been going up to Jerusalem long enough. Here are your gods, Israel; these brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’ He set up one in Bethel and the people went in procession all the way to Dan in front of the other. He set up the temple of the high places and appointed priests from ordinary families, who were not of the sons of Levi. Jeroboam also instituted a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth of the month, like the feast that was kept in Judah, and he went up to the altar. That was how he behaved in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made; and at Bethel he put the priests of the high places he had established. Jeroboam did not give up his wicked ways but went on appointing priests for the high places from the common people. He consecrated as priests of the high places any who wished to be. Such conduct made the House of Jeroboam a sinful House, and caused its ruin and extinction from the face of the earth.

Our sin is the sin of our fathers; we have done wrong, our deeds have been evil. Our fathers when they were in Egypt paid no heed to your wonderful deeds.
They fashioned a calf at Horeb and worshipped an image of metal, exchanging the God who was their glory for the image of a bull that eats grass.
They forgot the God who was their saviour, who had done such great things in Egypt, such portents in the land of Ham, such marvels at the Red Sea.

Gospel : Mark 8:1-10
A great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat. So Jesus called his disciples to him and said to them, ‘I feel sorry for all these people; they have been with me for three days now and have nothing to eat. If I send them off home hungry they will collapse on the way; some have come a great distance.’ His disciples replied, ‘Where could anyone get bread to feed these people in a deserted place like this?’ He asked them, ‘How many loaves have you?’ ‘Seven’ they said. Then he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them among the crowd. They had a few small fish as well, and over these he said a blessing and ordered them to be distributed also. They ate as much as they wanted, and they collected seven basketfuls of the scraps left over. Now there had been about four thousand people. He sent them away and immediately, getting into the boat with his disciples, went to the region of Dalmanutha.

Meditation
Today’s well-known narrative of Jesus feeding a multitude of thousands with seven loaves of bread and a few fish exemplifies Jesus’ reliability. He not only saw the hunger and misery his disciples were going through, but he also took action. He doubled the scant resources to feed his people. He quenched their hunger and gave them the energy they needed to get home safely. We might pause to consider our capacity to TRUST that God would provide for us entirely. When did God bless me with strength and nourishment? It’s wonderful to feel cared for, powerful, and fed. It is now our responsibility to feed the hungry both physically and spiritually.

He shall keep one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.’ And Israel has been separated from the House of David until the present day.

Returning from the district of Tyre, Jesus went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, right through the Decapolis region. And they brought him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they asked him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, put his fingers into the man’s ears and touched his tongue with spittle. Then looking up to heaven he sighed; and he said to him, ‘Ephphatha’, that is, ‘Be opened.’ And his ears were opened, and the ligament of his tongue was loosened and he spoke clearly. And Jesus ordered them to tell no one about it, but the more he insisted, the more widely they published it. Their admiration was unbounded. ‘He has done all things well,’ they said ‘he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.’

Meditation
Jesus pulls a deaf and dumb man away, inserts his fingers into his ears, spits on his tongue, looks up to heaven, and prays; holy gestures. The man’s ears immediately open, his tongue loosens, and he can talk clearly. The adoration is limitless. «He has done all things well, » they remarked, «he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.» This is healing, or the recovery from a physical condition. We’re getting close to the end of this Gospel. What Jesus did to this guy is intended to happen to all his followers, even his closest disciples. We must have our ears expanded to hear and comprehend the complete message of Jesus. We must talk frankly about what we have heard and learned after we have heard and understood. For the disciple, hearing and speaking are inextricably linked.

Salomon avait fait de Jéroboam un inspecteur des corvées. Un jour que Jéroboam était sorti de Jérusalem, il fut arrêté en chemin par le prophète Ahias de Silo; celui-ci portait un manteau neuf, et tous deux étaient seuls dans la campagne. Ahias prit le manteau neuf qu’il portait et le déchira en douze morceaux. Puis il dit à Jéroboam: « Prends pour toi dix morceaux, car ainsi parle le Seigneur, Dieu d’Israël: Voici que je vais déchirer le royaume en l’arrachant à Salomon, et je te donnerai dix tribus. Il lui restera une tribu, à cause de mon serviteur David, et de Jérusalem, la ville que je me suis choisie parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël. » Les dix tribus d’Israël rejetèrent la maison de David, et cette situation dure encore aujourd’hui où ceci est écrit.

Évangile : Mc 7, 31-37
En ce temps-là, Jésus quitta le territoire de Tyr; passant par Sidon, il prit la direction de la mer de Galilée et alla en plein territoire de la Décapole. Des gens lui amènent un sourd qui avait aussi de la difficulté à parler, et supplient Jésus de poser la main sur lui. Jésus l’emmena à l’écart, loin de la foule, lui mit les doigts dans les oreilles, et, avec sa salive, lui toucha la langue. Puis, les yeux levés au ciel, il soupira et lui dit: « Effata ! », c’est-à-dire : « Ouvre-toi ! » Ses oreilles s’ouvrirent; sa langue se délia, et il parlait correctement. Alors Jésus leur ordonna de n’en rien dire à personne; mais plus il leur donnait cet ordre, plus ceux-ci le proclamaient. Extrêmement frappés, ils disaient: « Il a bien fait toutes choses: il fait entendre les sourds et parler les muets.»

Méditation
Dans l’Evangile de ce jour, nous pouvons voir Jésus qui continue ses oeuvres de bienfaisances. A son arrivée dans le territoire de la Décapole, des gens lui emmènent un sourd-muet, quelqu’un à la situation déplorable. La vie de cet homme en effet était plongée dans l’obscurité et le silence jusqu’à ce qu’il fasse la rencontre de Jésus, qui va totalement transformer sa vie en lui faisant retrouver l’usage de ses yeux et de sa langue. Les foules comprirent alors qu’avec Jésus, rien n’est impossible car à travers lui, c’est la main de Dieu qui est à l’œuvre dans la création.

She was born in Darfur (Sudan). She was kidnapped and sold as a slave. Rescued by an Italian family she became a Christian and joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity. She died in 1947.

When Solomon grew old his wives swayed his heart to other gods; and his heart was not wholly with the Lord his God as his father David’s had been. Solomon became a follower of Astarte, the goddess of the Sidonians, and of Milcom, the Ammonite abomination. He did what was displeasing to the Lord, and was not a wholehearted follower of the Lord, as his father David had been. Then it was that Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the god of Moab on the mountain to the east of Jerusalem, and to Milcom the god of the Ammonites. He did the same for all his foreign wives, who offered incense and sacrifice to their gods. The Lord was angry with Solomon because his heart had turned from the Lord the God of Israel who had twice appeared to him and who had then forbidden him to follow other gods; but he did not carry out the Lord’s order. The Lord therefore said to Solomon, ‘Since you behave like this and do not keep my covenant or the laws I laid down for you, I will most surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your servants. For your father David’s sake, however, I will not do this during your lifetime, but will tear it out of your son’s hands. Even so, I will not tear the whole kingdom from him. For the sake of my servant David, and for the sake of Jerusalem which I have chosen, I will leave your son one tribe.’

They are happy who do what is right, who at all times do what is just. O Lord, remember me out of the love you have for your people.
But instead they mingled with the nations and learned to act as they did. They worshipped the idols of the nations and these became a snare to entrap them.
They even offered their own sons and their daughters in sacrifice to demons, till his anger blazed against his people; he was filled with horror at his chosen ones.

Alleluia, alleluia! The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. Alleluia!
Gospel : Mark 7:24-30
Jesus left Gennesaret and set out for the territory of Tyre. There he went into a house and did not want anyone to know he was there, but he could not pass unrecognised. A woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him straightaway and came and fell at his feet. Now the woman was a pagan, by birth a Syrophoenician, and she begged him to cast the devil out of her daughter. And he said to her, ‘The children should be fed first, because it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.’ But she spoke up: ‘Ah yes, sir,’ she replied ‘but the house-dogs under the table can eat the children’s scraps.’ And he said to her, ‘For saying this, you may go home happy: the devil has gone out of your daughter.’ So she went off to her home and found the child lying on the bed and the devil gone.

Meditation
Jesus’ reputation runs fast, and he had just made Pharisees think of their traditions in terms of mercy and love. Now he faces an even greater dilemma; a Gentile woman came looking for mercy. Jesus gives the desperate mother a response that would crush the hopes of any ordinary plea. His response seems so unnecessarily harsh that one wonders if Jesus’ compassion has faded into racism. Wild dogs were considered a nuisance and dangerous to life, particularly to unattended little children. So there appears to be no hope for this woman. But Jesus’ response wasn’t born out of hatred or racism. Jesus tests her to show her and us the fullness of God’s mercy and love. The determined woman gives an answer that rivals any wise saying in Scripture. She understands the heart of God better than those who were more than willing to let their sick people suffer for the sake of their traditions. The woman appealed to the heart of Jesus and found the mercy of God. Come to Jesus and be satisfied.
