1ère lecture : 1 R 11, 4-13
Salomon vieillissait; ses femmes le détournèrent vers d’autres dieux, et son cœur n’était plus tout entier au Seigneur, comme l’avait été celui de son père David. Salomon prit part au culte d’Astarté, la déesse des Sidoniens, et à celui de Milcom, l’horrible idole des Ammonites. Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux du Seigneur, et il ne lui obéit pas aussi parfaitement que son père David. Il construisit alors, sur la montagne à l’est de Jérusalem, un lieu sacré pour Camosh, l’horrible idole de Moab, et un autre pour Milcom, l’horrible idole des Ammonites. Il en fit d’autres pour permettre à toutes ses femmes étrangères de brûler de l’encens et d’offrir des sacrifices à leurs dieux. Le Seigneur s’irrita contre Salomon parce qu’il s’était détourné du Seigneur Dieu d’Israël. Pourtant, celui-ci lui était apparu deux fois, et lui avait défendu de suivre d’autres dieux; mais Salomon avait désobéi. Le Seigneur lui déclara: « Puisque tu t’es conduit de cette manière, puisque tu n’as pas gardé mon alliance ni observé mes décrets, je vais t’enlever le royaume et le donner à l’un de tes serviteurs. Seulement, à cause de ton père David, je ne ferai pas cela durant ta vie; c’est de la main de ton fils que j’enlèverai le royaume. Et encore, je ne lui enlèverai pas tout, je laisserai une tribu à ton fils, à cause de mon serviteur David et de Jérusalem, la ville que j’ai choisie. »

Heureux qui pratique la justice, qui observe le droit en tout temps! Souviens-toi de moi, Seigneur, dans ta bienveillance pour ton peuple.
Avec nos pères, nous avons péché, nous avons failli et renié. Ils vont se mêler aux païens, ils apprennent leur manière d’agir.
Alors ils servent leurs idoles, et pour eux c’est un piège: ils offrent leurs fils et leurs filles en sacrifice aux démons.
De telles pratiques les souillent; ils se prostituent par de telles actions. Et le Seigneur prend feu contre son peuple: ses héritiers lui font horreur.

Évangile : Mc 7, 24-30
En ce temps-là, Jésus partit et se rendit dans le territoire de Tyr. Il était entré dans une maison, et il ne voulait pas qu’on le sache, mais il ne put rester inaperçu: une femme entendit aussitôt parler de lui; elle avait une petite fille possédée par un esprit impur; elle vint se jeter à ses pieds. Cette femme était païenne, syro-phénicienne de naissance, et elle lui demandait d’expulser le démon hors de sa fille. Il lui disait: « Laisse d’abord les enfants se rassasier, car il n’est pas bien de prendre le pain des enfants et de le jeter aux petits chiens. » Mais elle lui répliqua: « Seigneur, les petits chiens, sous la table, mangent bien les miettes des petits enfants ! » Alors il lui dit: « À cause de cette parole, va: le démon est sorti de ta fille. » Elle rentra à la maison, et elle trouva l’enfant étendue sur le lit: le démon était sorti d’elle.

Seigneur notre Dieu, tu as voulu choisir dans ta création le pain et le vin qui refont chaque jour nos forces: Fais qu’ils deviennent aussi pour nous le sacrement de la vie éternelle. Par Jésus.

Proclamons l’amour du Seigneur, ses merveilles pour les hommes: Il a rassasié ceux qui avaient faim, et désaltéré ceux qui avaient soif.
Prière après la communion
Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que nous partagions un même pain et que nous buvions à la même coupe: Accorde-nous de vivre tellement unis dans le Christ que nous portions du fruit pour le salut du monde. Par Jésus.
Méditation
La rencontre de Jésus et la syro-phénicienne nous montre la puissance de la bonne prière. Jésus fait face à la demande d’une païenne qui lui demande la guérison pour sa fille. Or, les païens et les juifs au temps de Jésus n’entretenaient pas des bonnes relations. Dans ce contexte social, ni la femme païenne ni sa fille ne pouvait bénéficier d’une quelconque faveur venant d’un juif. La réponse de Jésus à la demande de cette femme, même si elle peut nous choquer, vise justement à planter ce décor et à mettre à l’épreuve la foi de cette femme. Teste qu’elle va passer en trouvant des mots justes qui vont émouvoir le cœur de Jésus. Finalement, elle obtiendra de Lui ce qu’elle demandait : la santé de sa fille. Nous aussi, au-delà de notre indignité, si nous trouvons des mots justes pour nos prières, Dieu répondra toujours favorablement à nos attentes.

The fame of Solomon having reached the queen of Sheba, she came to test him with difficult questions. On coming to Solomon, she opened her mind freely to him; and Solomon had an answer for all her questions, not one of them was too obscure for the king to expound. When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon, the palace he had built, the food at his table, the accommodation for his officials, the organisation of his staff and the way they were dressed, his cup-bearers, and the holocausts he offered in the Temple of the Lord, it left her breathless, and she said to the king, ‘What I heard in my own country about you and your wisdom was true, then! Until I came and saw it with my own eyes I could not believe what they told me, but clearly they told me less than half: for wisdom and prosperity you surpass the report I heard. How happy your wives are! How happy are these servants of yours who wait on you always and hear your wisdom! Blessed be the Lord your God who has granted you his favour, setting you on the throne of Israel! Gospel : Mark 7:14-23
Jesus called the people to him and said, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that goes into a man from outside can make him unclean; it is the things that come out of a man that make him unclean. If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen to this.’ When he had gone back into the house, away from the crowd, his disciples questioned him about the parable. He said to them, ‘Do you not understand either? Can you not see that whatever goes into a man from outside cannot make him unclean, because it does not go into his heart but through his stomach and passes out into the sewer?’ (Thus he pronounced all foods clean.) And he went on, ‘It is what comes out of a man that makes him unclean. For it is from within, from men’s hearts, that evil intentions emerge: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within and make a man unclean.’

Meditation
In today’s Gospel reading, we hear Jesus overturning some commonly held understandings and traditions. His disciples even questioned him to make sure they understood his words correctly. Jesus reiterates that all food is clean and “nothing that goes into a man from outside can make him unclean.” One way to approach this reading might be to examine a change in our understanding. Is there something in our lives that resonate with this Gospel passage? Perhaps we have had an experience lately where we discover that something that we have known to be true, wise and/or common practice is surprisingly turned upside down and proven false or irrelevant. It takes effort, energy (and grace) to handle change well, but it can be even more complicated when it goes against a long-standing tradition or hits us suddenly. Sometimes, we can even begin to question what is true among our other commonly held beliefs and practices. Jesus teaches us, “For it is from within, from men’s hearts, that evil intentions emerge: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within and make a man unclean.” He seems to be warning us and highlighting the slippery slope of evil that can come from our hearts being in the wrong place.

En ces jours-là, la reine de Saba avait entendu parler de la renommée de Salomon, qui faisait honneur au nom du Seigneur. Elle vint donc pour le mettre à l’épreuve en lui proposant des énigmes. Elle arriva à Jérusalem avec une escorte imposante: des chameaux chargés d’aromates et d’une énorme quantité d’or et de pierres précieuses. Quand elle fut parvenue auprès de Salomon, elle lui exposa les questions qu’elle avait préparées, mais Salomon trouva réponse à tout et ne fut arrêté par aucune difficulté. Lorsque la reine de Saba vit toute la sagesse de Salomon, le palais qu’il avait construit, les plats servis à sa table, le logement de ses officiers, la tenue du service et l’habillement des serviteurs, ses sommeliers, les holocaustes qu’il offrait à la maison du Seigneur, elle en eut le souffle coupé, et elle dit au roi: « Ce que j’ai entendu dire dans mon pays sur toi et sur ta sagesse, c’était donc vrai! Je ne voulais pas croire ce qu’on disait, avant de venir et de voir de mes yeux; mais voilà qu’on ne m’en avait pas appris la moitié! Tu surpasses en sagesse et en magnificence la renommée qui était venue jusqu’à moi. Heureux tes gens, heureux tes serviteurs que voici, eux qui se tiennent continuellement devant toi et qui entendent ta sagesse! Béni soit le Seigneur ton Dieu, qui t’a montré sa bienveillance en te plaçant sur le trône d’Israël. Parce que le Seigneur aime Israël pour toujours, il t’a établi roi pour exercer le droit et la justice. » Elle fit présent au roi de cent vingt lingots d’or, d’une grande quantité d’aromates et de pierres précieuses; il n’est plus jamais venu une quantité d’aromates pareille à celle que la reine de Saba avait donnée au roi Salomon.

Ne comprenez-vous pas que tout ce qui entre dans l’homme, en venant du dehors, ne peut pas le rendre impur, parce que cela n’entre pas dans son cœur, mais dans son ventre, pour être éliminé ? » C’est ainsi que Jésus déclarait purs tous les aliments. Il leur dit encore: « Ce qui sort de l’homme, c’est cela qui le rend impur. Car c’est du dedans, du cœur de l’homme, que sortent les pensées perverses: inconduites, vols, meurtres, adultères, cupidités, méchancetés, fraude, débauche, envie, diffamation, orgueil et démesure. Tout ce mal vient du dedans, et rend l’homme impur. »

Méditation
Dans l’Evangile de ce jour, Jésus poursuivant son enseignement sur les pratiques religieuses qui honorent Dieu revient sur le cas des interdits alimentaires. Selon lui, les pharisiens sont dans l’erreur en pensant que le respect scrupuleux des interdits alimentaires à lui seul, sans être accompagné d’une vie juste, suffirait à donner le salut. Pour Jésus, les aliments qui sont des éléments extérieurs à l’homme ne sauraient le rendre impur. Mais c’est plutôt le trop plein de son cœur, lorsqu’il est mauvais ou impur, qui peut conduire l’homme à la damnation éternelle.

The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus, and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and the Jews in general, follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow; and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So these Pharisees and scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands?’ He answered, ‘It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of scripture: This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless, the doctrines they teach are only human regulations. You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions.’ And he said to them, ‘How ingeniously you get round the commandment of God in order to preserve your own tradition! For Moses said: Do your duty to your father and your mother, and, Anyone who curses father or mother must be put to death. But you say, “If a man says to his father or mother: Anything I have that I might have used to help you is Corban (that is, dedicated to God), then he is forbidden from that moment to do anything for his father or mother.” In this way you make God’s word null and void for the sake of your tradition which you have handed down. Meditation
Sometimes, we judge the merits of a tradition based on outward appearances. If it appears holy, then it must be. The Pharisees took part in a religious tradition of the washing of hands. This was not a matter of personal hygiene but an elaborate religious ritual full of symbolism. It consisted of thoroughly and vigorously washing hands up to the elbows while offering prayers and blessings as a religious ritual. This tradition made the Pharisees think themselves pure and others not. “Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders …?” I want us to note that apart from the authority and teaching of Jesus, any kind of religious practice cannot be acceptable to God, no matter how beautiful or popular. (Mt 28:18-20; Jn 14:6; Eph 1:22, 23). Worship in God’s eyes is not those acts which appeal to the eyes or flesh with glitter and pomp. It is simple, trusting hearts, yielding to his Son and expressing the soul’s adoration for him.

Saint Paul Miki et ses compagnons, martyrs

Paul Miki et ses vingt-cinq compagnons sont les premiers martyrs canonisés d’Extrême-Orient. Ils furent mis en croix et percés à coup de lance, à Nagasaki, en 1597. Ils moururent en chantant, scellant de leur sang leur annonce de l’Evangile. Parmi eux, il y avait trois jésuites japonais, dont Paul Miki, et six franciscains espagnols. Tous les autres étaient laïcs.

Que tes yeux soient ouverts nuit et jour sur cette Maison, sur ce lieu dont tu as dit: “C’est ici que sera mon nom.” Écoute donc la prière que ton serviteur fera en ce lieu. En ce temps-là, les pharisiens et quelques scribes, venus de Jérusalem, se réunissent auprès de Jésus, et voient quelques-uns de ses disciples prendre leur repas avec des mains impures, c’est-à-dire non lavées. – Les pharisiens en effet, comme tous les Juifs, se lavent toujours soigneusement les mains avant de manger, par attachement à la tradition des anciens; et au retour du marché, ils ne mangent pas avant de s’être aspergés d’eau, et ils sont attachés encore par tradition à beaucoup d’autres pratiques : lavage de coupes, de carafes et de plats. Alors les pharisiens et les scribes demandèrent à Jésus: « Pourquoi tes disciples ne suivent-ils pas la tradition des anciens? Ils prennent leurs repas avec des mains impures. » Jésus leur répondit : « Isaïe a bien prophétisé à votre sujet, hypocrites, ainsi qu’il est écrit: Ce peuple m’honore des lèvres, mais son cœur est loin de moi. C’est en vain qu’ils me rendent un culte; les doctrines qu’ils enseignent ne sont que des préceptes humains. Vous aussi, vous laissez de côté le commandement de Dieu, pour vous attacher à la tradition des hommes. » Il leur disait encore: « Vous rejetez bel et bien le commandement de Dieu pour établir votre tradition. En effet, Moïse a dit : Honore ton père et ta mère. Et encore : Celui qui maudit son père ou sa mère sera mis à mort. Mais vous, vous dites : Supposons qu’un homme déclare à son père ou à sa mère: “Les ressources qui m’auraient permis de t’aider sont korbane, c’est-à-dire don réservé à Dieu”, alors vous ne l’autorisez plus à faire quoi que ce soit pour son père ou sa mère; vous annulez ainsi la parole de Dieu par la tradition que vous transmettez. Et vous faites beaucoup de choses du même genre. »

Méditation:
l’Evangile de Marc de ce jour ouvre le débat sur la vraie religion, celle qui plait à Dieu. En effet, les responsables religieux de son temps accordaient beaucoup d’importance à des pratiques qui relevaient de la religion extérieure, au détriment de la recherche de la pureté du cœur, gage de la religion intérieure, celle-là même qui selon Jésus est agréable à son Père. Si Jésus condamne la première, c’est qu’elle constitue un refuge pour les hypocrites qui par des pratiques extérieures cherchent à plaire aux hommes plutôt qu’à Dieu; quand ils ne recherchent pas tout simplement leurs intérêts égoïstes. Pour Jésus, la religion qui plait à Dieu, la vraie, c’est le culte rendu par un cœur pur qui aime et craint Dieu. Celui qui la pratique s’arrange à établir une adéquation entre ses dispositions intérieures et ses pratiques religieuses externes.

Agathe, dont le nom évoque la bonté, était une jeune fille qui avait consacré sa virginité au Christ. Elle reçut de Dieu la force de verser son sang pour Celui qu’elle aimait. C’était en 251, à Catane en Sicile, durant la persécution de Dèce.

Sainte Agathe a combattu jusqu’à la mort pour être fidèle à son Dieu; elle n’a pas craint les menaces des impies : elle était fondée sur le roc.
Prière d’ouverture
Que sainte Agathe implore pour nous ton pardon, Seigneur, Elle qui sut également te plaire par la consécration de sa virginité et par son courage dans le martyre. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : 1 R 8, 1-7. 9-13
En ces jours-là, Salomon rassembla auprès de lui à Jérusalem les anciens d’Israël et tous les chefs des tribus, les chefs de famille des fils d’Israël, pour aller chercher l’arche de l’Alliance du Seigneur dans la Cité de David, c’est-à-dire à Sion. Tous les hommes d’Israël se rassemblèrent auprès du roi Salomon au septième mois, durant la fête des Tentes. Quand tous les anciens d’Israël furent arrivés, les prêtres se chargèrent de l’Arche. Ils emportèrent l’arche du Seigneur et la tente de la Rencontre avec tous les objets sacrés qui s’y trouvaient; ce sont les prêtres et les lévites qui les transportèrent. Le roi Salomon et, avec lui, toute la communauté d’Israël qu’il avait convoquée auprès de lui devant l’Arche offrirent en sacrifice des moutons et des bœufs: il y en avait un si grand nombre qu’on ne pouvait ni le compter ni l’évaluer. Puis les prêtres transportèrent l’Arche à sa place, dans la Chambre sainte que l’on appelle le Saint des Saints, sous les ailes des kéroubim. Ceux-ci, en effet, étendaient leurs ailes au-dessus de l’emplacement de l’Arche: ils protégeaient l’Arche et ses barres. Dans l’Arche, il n’y avait rien, sinon les deux tables de pierre que Moïse y avait placées au mont Horeb, quand le Seigneur avait conclu alliance avec les fils d’Israël, à leur sortie du pays d’Égypte. Quand les prêtres sortirent du sanctuaire, la nuée remplit la maison du Seigneur, et, à cause d’elle, les prêtres durent interrompre le service divin: la gloire du Seigneur remplissait la maison du Seigneur! Alors Salomon s’écria: « Le Seigneur déclare demeurer dans la nuée obscure. Et maintenant, je t’ai construit, Seigneur, une maison somptueuse, un lieu où tu habiteras éternellement. »

En ce temps-là, après la traversée, abordant à Génésareth Jésus et ses disciples accostèrent. Ils sortirent de la barque, et aussitôt les gens reconnurent Jésus: ils parcoururent toute la région, et se mirent à apporter les malades sur des brancards là où l’on apprenait que Jésus se trouvait. Et dans tous les endroits où il se rendait, dans les villages, les villes ou les campagnes, on déposait les infirmes sur les places. Ils le suppliaient de leur laisser toucher ne serait-ce que la frange de son manteau. Et tous ceux qui la touchèrent étaient sauvés.

Méditation
l’Evangile de Marc de ce jour nous parle de Jésus et de ses disciples à Génésareth. A leur arrivée, ils sont envahis par une foule immense des gens qui avaient tout genre de besoins et qui voyaient en Jésus le détenteur de la solution à leurs problèmes. Pour chacune de ces personnes, il ne fallait en aucun cas manquer l’opportunité que leur offrait la visite de Jésus dans leur région pour voir toutes leurs misères humaines trouver une solution. C’est donc poussées par une foi sincère que tous ces gens viennent à Jésus. Nous également, nous devons nous laisser guider par notre foi pour Lui présenter nos misères quotidiennes, ainsi que celles de nos frères et sœurs.

She was martyred at Catania in Sicily, probably during the persecution of Decius (250-253). Devotion to her was widespread in the Church in the earliest times and she is mentioned in the Roman Canon of the Mass.

First reading : 1 Kings 8:1-7, 9-13
Solomon called the elders of Israel together in Jerusalem to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord up from the Citadel of David, which is Zion. All the men of Israel assembled round King Solomon in the month of Ethanim, at the time of the feast (that is, the seventh month), and the priests took up the ark and the Tent of Meeting with all the sacred vessels that were in it. In the presence of the ark, King Solomon and all Israel sacrificed sheep and oxen, countless, innumerable. The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, in the Debir of the Temple, that is, in the Holy of Holies, under the cherubs’ wings. For there where the ark was placed the cherubs spread out their wings and sheltered the ark and its shafts. There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets Moses had placed in it at Horeb, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord had made with the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt; they are still there today. Now when the priests came out of the sanctuary, the cloud filled the Temple of the Lord, and because of the cloud the priests could no longer perform their duties: the glory of the Lord filled the Lord’s Temple. Then Solomon said: ‘The Lord has chosen to dwell in the thick cloud. Yes, I have built you a dwelling, a place for you to live in forever.’

Meditation
Today we have a beautiful passage summarising what Jesus came to do for the people. It indicates the tremendous hunger of the people to be healed and made whole by Jesus. The people recognise him immediately and go everywhere, bringing along those needing healing. Jesus, in turn, was visiting towns and villages. The sick, strong in their faith, only asked to be allowed to touch the edges of his garment, and everyone who touched him was well again. Come then to Jesus and be satisfied.

That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils. The whole town came crowding round the door, and he cured many who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another; he also cast out many devils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was. In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house, and went off to a lonely place and prayed there. Simon and his companions set out in search of him, and when they found him they said, ‘Everybody is looking for you.’ He answered, ‘Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came.’ And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out devils.

Meditation
The Gospel teaches us that God has not abandoned us. Peter is one of Jesus’ closest friends. His mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever while her son-in-law was preaching with Jesus the Lord. When Jesus knew of her sickness, the Gospel tells us, “He went to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her, and she began to wait on them”. Jesus deliberately takes time to go to Peter’s house; it is time to send the sickness away; it is time to lift this burden off the shoulder of Peter and his family. Jesus does not visit our home only to leave us the same way He met us. Jesus feels our pain and is eager to bring us respite. The Lord needs another Peter who would bring Him not only into an individual’s home but to the community as well. Peter could not help his people until he brought the Lord home; when we too feel helpless and hopeless in the face of all the trouble pressing hard on us, let us do one thing; invite the Lord into our personal life and home, that is the magical little change that brings healing to the community and the world.

Il est bon de fêter notre Dieu, il est beau de chanter sa louange: il guérit les cœurs brisés et soigne leurs blessures.
Il compte le nombre des étoiles, il donne à chacune un nom ; il est grand, il est fort, notre Maître : nul n’a mesuré son intelligence.
Le Seigneur élève les humbles et rabaisse jusqu’à terre les impies. Entonnez pour le Seigneur l’action de grâce, jouez pour notre Dieu sur la cithare !
2ème lecture : 1 Co 9, 16-19.22-23
Frères, annoncer l’Évangile, ce n’est pas là pour moi un motif de fierté, c’est une nécessité qui s’impose à moi. Malheur à moi si je n’annonçais pas l’Évangile ! Certes, si je le fais de moi-même, je mérite une récompense. Mais je ne le fais pas de moi-même, c’est une mission qui m’est confiée Alors quel est mon mérite? C’est d’annoncer l’Évangile sans rechercher aucun avantage matériel, et sans faire valoir mes droits de prédicateur de l’Évangile. Oui, libre à l’égard de tous, je me suis fait l’esclave de tous afin d’en gagner le plus grand nombre possible. Avec les faibles, j’ai été faible, pour gagner les faibles. Je me suis fait tout à tous pour en sauver à tout prix quelques-uns. Et tout cela, je le fais à cause de l’Évangile, pour y avoir part, moi aussi.

elle avait de la fièvre. Aussitôt, on parla à Jésus de la malade. Jésus s’approcha, la saisit par la main et la fit lever. La fièvre la quitta, et elle les servait. Le soir venu, après le coucher du soleil, on lui amenait tous ceux qui étaient atteints d’un mal ou possédés par des démons.
La ville entière se pressait à la porte. Il guérit beaucoup de gens atteints de toutes sortes de maladies, et il expulsa beaucoup de démons ; il empêchait les démons de parler, parce qu’ils savaient, eux, qui il était. Le lendemain, Jésus se leva, bien avant l’aube. Il sortit et se rendit dans un endroit désert, et là il priait. Simon et ceux qui étaient avec lui partirent à sa recherche Ils le trouvent et lui disent : « Tout le monde te cherche. » Jésus leur dit: « Allons ailleurs, dans les villages voisins, afin que là aussi je proclame l’Évangile ; car c’est pour cela que je suis sorti.» Et il parcourut toute la Galilée, proclamant l’Évangile dans leurs synagogues, et expulsant les démons.

Jésus vient parmi nous et nous guérit. Par la grâce du baptême, il nous a régénérés et guéris ; par sa miséricorde, il renouvelle chaque jour notre existence. Nous sommes des hommes sauvés, et nous le sommes pour être autant de signes du Christ auprès de nos frères et sœurs. La belle-mère de Pierre est, pour chacun de nous, l’exemple de toute personne qui, ayant été guérie par le Christ, choisit de le servir. Les foules se mettent à chercher Jésus, attirées par les paroles qu’il prononce, par les signes qu’il fait. C’est la charité qui les attire. Pour être de véritables témoins, capables d’annoncer le Christ, il nous faut ancrer notre vie dans la prière et la contemplation. Jésus se retire pour prier seul dans un endroit désert : il nous indique la voie principale que nous devons suivre, si nous voulons être ses vrais disciples.

God said, ‘Ask what you would like me to give you.’ Solomon replied, ‘You showed great kindness to your servant David, my father, when he lived his life before you in faithfulness and justice and integrity of heart; you have continued this great kindness to him by allowing a son of his to sit on his throne today. Now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in succession to David my father. But I am a very young man, unskilled in leadership. Your servant finds himself in the midst of this people of yours that you have chosen, a people so many its number cannot be counted or reckoned. Give your servant a heart to understand how to discern between good and evil, for who could govern this people of yours that is so great?’ It pleased the Lord that Solomon should have asked for this. ‘Since you have asked for this’ the Lord said ‘and not asked for long life for yourself or riches or the lives of your enemies, but have asked for a discerning judgement for yourself, here and now I do what you ask. Gospel: Mark 6:30-34
The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him all they had done and taught. Then he said to them, ‘You must come away to some lonely place all by yourselves and rest for a while’; for there were so many coming and going that the apostles had no time even to eat. So they went off in a boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves. But people saw them going, and many could guess where; and from every town they all hurried to the place on foot and reached it before them. So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.
Prayer over the Offerings
O Lord, we bring to your altar these offerings of our service: be pleased to receive them, we pray, and transform them into the Sacrament of our redemption. Through Christ our Lord.

Nourished by these redeeming gifts, we pray, O Lord, that through this help to eternal salvation true faith may ever increase. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
There is a happy report from the mission, but Jesus makes the disciples realise that there is no rest when the people of God are hungry for his word. This could have been a real time of temptation as the apostles began to glory in their new-found power and the resultant fame and popularity, obeyed even by demons. Wow! And we also see the balance in Jesus’ life. He was available to all those in need, the poor, the sick, and the outcasts. However, there was a limit to his availability, prayer time, and going away to some lonely place. A real shepherd! Pope Francis says pastors should know the ‘smell of the sheep’. It means they should know the people’s needs, frustrations, poverty, hopes and dreams. They should know and accept people at their worst. Sheep don’t smell good! Today, the Church reaches out to the messiness and injustices of society. It is not just a place for the elite of God but also for ordinary sinful people trying to do their best for their families, students, parishioners and themselves.
