Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Ps 24: 1-3
To you, I lift up my soul, O my God. In you, I have trusted; let me not be put to shame. Nor let my enemies exult over me; and let none who hope in you be put to shame.
Collect
Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds at his coming, so that, gathered at his right hand, they may be worthy to possess the heavenly kingdom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Isaiah 63: 16-17, 64: 1, 3-8
You, Lord, yourself are our Father, “Our Redeemer” is your ancient name. Why, Lord, leave us to stray from your ways and harden our hearts against fearing you? Return, for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance. Oh, that you would tear the heavens open and come down! – at your Presence the mountains would melt. No ear has heard, no eye has seen any god but you act like this for those who trust him. You guide those who act with integrity and keep your ways in mind. Jesus said to his disciples: “Be on your guard, stay awake, because you never know when the time will come. It is like a man travelling abroad: he has gone from home, and left his servants in charge, each with his own task; and he has told the doorkeeper to stay awake. So stay awake, because you do not know when the master of the house is coming, evening, midnight, cockcrow, dawn; if he comes unexpectedly, he must not find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake!”

Accept, we pray, O Lord, these offerings we make, gathered from among your gifts to us, and may what you grant us to celebrate devoutly here below gain for us the prize of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord.

May these mysteries, O Lord, in which we have participated, profit us, we pray, for even now, as we walk amid passing things, you teach us by them to love the things of heaven and hold fast to what endures. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
We are invited today, dear brothers and sisters, to be attentive as we await the coming of our saviour Jesus Christ. The Gospel is clear on this: “keep watch, for you do not know the moment”. This moment is that of the coming of the master, the son of man. Advent is principally the time to keep watch for the coming of Christ. His coming in the flesh at Christmas, his coming in glory at the end of time, and especially his coming in our daily activities and in our brothers and sisters. This time of waiting can be applied to all Christian life, for the Lord visits us daily. But are we vigilant to his visits? We need concrete preparation before meeting the Lord, and only God can help us to keep watch in prayers as we await his coming. God’s time is now!

Donne à tes fidèles, Dieu tout-puissant, d’aller avec courage sur les chemins de la justice à la rencontre du Seigneur, pour qu’ils soient appelés, lors du jugement, à entrer en possession du royaume des cieux. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Is 63, 16b-17.19b ; 64, 2b-7
C’est toi, Seigneur, notre père ; « Notre-rédempteur-depuis-toujours », tel est ton nom. Pourquoi, Seigneur, nous laisses-tu errer hors de tes chemins ? Pourquoi laisser nos cœurs s’endurcir et ne plus te craindre ? Reviens, à cause de tes serviteurs, des tribus de ton héritage. Ah ! Si tu déchirais les cieux, si tu descendais, les montagnes seraient ébranlées devant ta face. Voici que tu es descendu : les montagnes furent ébranlées devant ta face. Jamais on n’a entendu, jamais on n’a ouï dire, nul œil n’a jamais vu un autre dieu que toi agir ainsi pour celui qui l’attend. 1ère lecture : 1 Co 1, 3-9

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Prenez garde, restez éveillés : car vous ne savez pas quand ce sera le moment. C’est comme un homme parti en voyage: en quittant sa maison, il a donné tout pouvoir à ses serviteurs, fixé à chacun son travail, et demandé au portier de veiller. Veillez donc, car vous ne savez pas quand vient le maître de la maison, le soir ou à minuit, au chant du coq ou le matin; s’il arrive à l’improviste, il ne faudrait pas qu’il vous trouve endormis. Ce que je vous dis là, je le dis à tous : Veillez ! »

Seigneur, nous ne pourrons jamais t’offrir que les biens venus de toi : accepte ceux que nous t’apportons; et puisque c’est toi qui nous donnes maintenant de célébrer l’eucharistie, fais qu’elle soit pour nous le gage du salut éternel. Par Jésus.

Prière après la communion
Fais fructifier en nous, Seigneur, l’eucharistie qui nous a rassemblés: c’est par elle que tu formes dès maintenant, à travers la vie de ce monde, l’amour dont nous t’aimerons éternellement. Par Jésus.
Méditation
En entrant dans l’Avent, nous attendons la venue de l’Enfant Jésus à Noël ; Et puisque l’Avent suppose une attitude d’attente, Jésus en cette circonstance nous invite à une attente vigilante. « Prenez garde, restez éveillés : car vous ne savez pas quand ce sera le moment ». Jésus nous demande de nous concentrer sur le temps présent et veiller. Conscient de ce qu’est notre monde actuel, la prière du prophète Isaïe dans la première lecture qui est la supplication d’un peuple humilié, écrasé, dispersé : « Reviens, Seigneur, pour l’amour de tes serviteurs ». D’ailleurs, le Psaume responsorial nous encourage davantage : Dieu, fais-nous revenir ; que ton visage s’éclaire, et nous serons sauvés (Ps 79) ! C’est important pour nous qui vivons dans un monde où le désespoir est plus mortel que jamais. C’est là que nous sommes envoyés comme messagers de l’espérance, vertu par excellence pour le temps de l’Avent. Quand tout semble désespéré, rallumons en nous le feu de l’espérance.

SAINT Bibiana
Her parents were martyred in the persecution of Julian the Apostate, and Bibiana and her sister Demetria were turned over to a woman named Rufina who tried to force her into prostitution. Upon her continued refusal, Bibiana was imprisoned in a mad house, and then flogged to death.

First reading: Daniel 7:15-27
I, Daniel, was deeply disturbed and the visions that passed through my head alarmed me. So I approached one of those who were standing by and asked him to tell me the truth about all this. And in reply he revealed to me what these things meant. “These four great beasts are four kings who will rise from the earth. Those who are granted sovereignty are the saints of the Most High, and the kingdom will be theirs for ever, for ever and ever.” Then I asked to know the truth about the fourth beast, different from all the rest, very terrifying, with iron teeth and bronze claws, eating, crushing and trampling underfoot what remained; and the truth about the ten horns on its head – and why the other horn sprouted and the three original horns fell, and why this horn had eyes and a mouth that was full of boasts, and why it made a greater show than the other horns. This was the horn I had watched making war on the saints and proving the stronger, until the coming of the one of great age who gave judgement in favour of the saints of the Most High, when the time came for the saints to take over the kingdom. This is what he said: “The fourth beast is to be a fourth kingdom on earth, different from all other kingdoms. It will devour the whole earth, trample it underfoot and crush it. As for the ten horns: from this kingdom will rise ten kings, and another after them; this one will be different from the previous ones and will bring down three kings; he is going to speak words against the Most High, and harass the saints of the Most High. He will consider changing seasons and the Law, and the saints will be put into his power for a time, two times, and half a time. But a court will be held and his power will be stripped from him, consumed, and utterly destroyed. And sovereignty and kingship, and the splendours of all the kingdoms under heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Most High. His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty and every empire will serve and obey him.”

Meditation
Jesus speaks to us today about the end of time and warns us against things that can deviate our attention from life in the Spirit. Waiting might be long and tiredness might crop in at any time. So, faced with the diverse demands of the flesh, we might allow ourselves to be led by the evil one into a life of debauchery, drunkenness and the worries or cares of this passing life. What can we do in order to avoid being trapped in this life style? How do we make sure that the day of the Lord does not take us by surprise? Jesus’ response is very clear: Stay awake and pray at all times. Dearly beloved, we are invited to live our Christian identity in a dignifying manner through discernment and prayer.

1ère lecture : Dn 7, 15-27
Moi, Daniel, j’avais l’esprit angoissé, car les visions que j’avais me bouleversaient. Je m’approchai de l’un de ceux qui entouraient le Trône, et je l’interrogeai sur la vérité de tout cela. Il me répondit et me révéla l’interprétation : « Ces bêtes énormes, au nombre de quatre, ce sont quatre rois qui surgiront de la terre. Mais ce sont les saints du Très-Haut qui recevront la royauté et la posséderont pour toute l’éternité. » Puis je l’interrogeai sur la quatrième bête, qui était différente de toutes les autres, cette bête terriblement puissante, avec ses dents de fer et ses griffes de bronze, qui dévorait, déchiquetait et piétinait tout ce qui restait. Je l’interrogeai sur les dix cornes de sa tête, et sur cette corne qui lui avait poussé en faisant tomber les trois autres devant elle – cette corne qui avait des yeux, et une bouche qui tenait des propos délirants – cette corne qui était plus imposante que les autres. Je l’avais vue faire la guerre aux saints et l’emporter sur eux, jusqu’à la venue du Vieillard qui avait prononcé le jugement en faveur des saints du Très-Haut, et le temps était arrivé où les saints avaient pris possession de la royauté. À ces questions, il me fut répondu : « La quatrième bête, c’est un quatrième royaume sur la terre, qui sera différent de tous les royaumes. Il dévorera toute la terre, la piétinera et l’écrasera. Les dix cornes, ce sont dix rois qui surgiront de ce royaume-là. Un autre roi surgira ensuite ; il sera différent des précédents, et il renversera trois rois. Il prononcera des paroles hostiles au Très-Haut, il persécutera les saints du Très-Haut, et il entreprendra de changer la date des fêtes et la Loi. Les saints seront livrés à son pouvoir pendant un temps, des temps, et la moitié d’un temps. Puis le tribunal siégera, et la domination sera enlevée à ce royaume, qui sera détruit et totalement anéanti. La royauté, la domination et la puissance de tous les royaumes de la terre, sont données au peuple des saints du Très-Haut. Sa royauté est une royauté éternelle, et tous les empires le serviront et lui obéiront. »

Méditation
Veiller c’est attendre, attendre une visite et une présence qui nous rend différent positivement et joyeux. Jésus est le modèle de veille et de vigilance. Comme le veilleur qui attend l’aurore, notre être attend et désire cette rencontre. Jésus a vécu dans l’attente de l’événement de la croix, qui est un événement de salut, de joie ; l’événement de la victoire de Dieu sur le mal, de la victoire du bien sur le péché, de la victoire de la lumière sur les ténèbres.
Pour véritablement veiller, Jésus enseigne et recommande la vie de la prière. Car la prière fait grandir et rend intense la relation avec Dieu. C’est par la prière que Jésus révèle aux disciples que Dieu est père. La vie de la prière est un acte d’amour, une expression de l’affection filiale au Dieu Père qui nous aime. Pour Jésus, prier c’est écouter Dieu et faire sa volonté. La prière nous tient éveillés et sans elle, nous sommes tentés par l’indifférence, la distraction et la somnolence.

Blessed Clementine Anuarite
Nengepeta Anuarite was born in Zaire in 1939. In 1955 she joined the Religious Institute of the “Holy Family”. In 1964 she, and the whole community, were kidnapped by the Simba rebels. Anuarite was killed on 1 December 1964 having refused to be the wife of the Colonel.

The second beast I saw was different, like a bear, raised up on one of its sides, with three ribs in its mouth, between its teeth. “Up!” Came the command. “Eat quantities of flesh!” After this I looked, and saw another beast, like a leopard, and with four bird’s wings on its flanks; it had four heads, and power was given to it. Next I saw another vision in the visions of the night: I saw a fourth beast, fearful, terrifying, very strong; it had great iron teeth, and it ate, crushed and trampled underfoot what remained. It was different from the previous beasts and had ten horns. While I was looking at these horns, I saw another horn sprouting among them, a little one; three of the original horns were pulled out by the roots to make way for it; and in this horn I saw eyes like human eyes, and a mouth that was full of boasts. As I watched: Thrones were set in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, the hair of his head as pure as wool. His throne was a blaze of flames, its wheels were a burning fire. A stream of fire poured out, issuing from his presence. A thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. A court was held and the books were opened. The great things the horn was saying were still ringing in my ears, and as I watched, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and committed to the flames. The other beasts were deprived of their power, but received a lease of life for a season and a time. I gazed into the visions of the night. And I saw, coming on the clouds of heaven, one like a son of man. He came to the one of great age and was led into his presence. On him was conferred sovereignty, glory and kingship, and men of all peoples, nations and languages became his servants. His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty which shall never pass away, nor will his empire ever be destroyed.

Meditation
The parable in today’s Gospel exhorts us to use our human capacities to discern signs from God in our lives. Just as we are capable of determining the coming of a new season, we should be able as well to read and understand the signs of God in our lives. God does speak to us in mysterious language. He reveals his Word to us in human language that we are able to understand. This too is an aspect of the mystery of the incarnation of his son. The Gospel invites us today to be attentive to our human experiences. Through them, God addresses his unchangeable word to us, irrespective of our different states of being. May God grant us the grace to listen and put this Word to practice. May He give us the spirit to abide to this word incarnate – Jesus CHRIST.

Daniel prit la parole et dit : « Au cours de la nuit, dans ma vision, je regardais. Les quatre vents du ciel soulevaient la grande mer. Quatre bêtes énormes sortirent de la mer, chacune différente des autres. La première ressemblait à un lion, et elle avait des ailes d’aigle. Tandis que je la regardais, ses ailes lui furent arrachées, et elle fut soulevée de terre et dressée sur ses pieds, comme un homme, et un cœur d’homme lui fut donné. La deuxième bête ressemblait à un ours ; elle était à moitié debout, et elle avait trois côtes d’animal dans la gueule, entre les dents. On lui dit : “Lève-toi, dévore beaucoup de viande !” Je continuais à regarder : je vis une autre bête, qui ressemblait à une panthère; et elle avait quatre ailes d’oiseau sur le dos ; elle avait aussi quatre têtes. La domination lui fut donnée. Puis, au cours de la nuit, je regardais encore; je vis une quatrième bête, terrible, effrayante, extraordinairement puissante ; elle avait des dents de fer énormes ; elle dévorait, déchiquetait et piétinait tout ce qui restait. Elle était différente des trois autres bêtes, et elle avait dix cornes. Comme je considérais ces cornes, il en poussa une autre, plus petite, au milieu ; trois des premières cornes furent arrachées devant celle-ci. Et cette corne avait des yeux comme des yeux d’homme, et une bouche qui tenait des propos délirants. Je continuai à regarder : des trônes furent disposés, et un Vieillard prit place ; son habit était blanc comme la neige, et les cheveux de sa tête, comme de la laine immaculée; son trône était fait de flammes de feu, avec des roues de feu ardent. Un fleuve de feu coulait, qui jaillissait devant lui. Des milliers de milliers le servaient, des myriades de myriades se tenaient devant lui. Le tribunal prit place et l’on ouvrit des livres. Je regardais, j’entendais les propos délirants que vomissait la corne. Je regardais, et la bête fut tuée, son cadavre fut jeté au feu. Quant aux autres bêtes, la domination leur fut retirée, mais une prolongation de vie leur fut donnée, pour une période et un temps déterminés. Je regardais, au cours des visions de la nuit, et je voyais venir, avec les nuées du ciel, comme un Fils d’homme ; il parvint jusqu’au Vieillard, et on le fit avancer devant lui. Et il lui fut donné domination, gloire et royauté ; tous les peuples, toutes les nations et les gens de toutes langues le servirent. Sa domination est une domination éternelle, qui ne passera pas et sa royauté, une royauté qui ne sera pas détruite. »

Méditation
Jésus parlait à ses disciples de sa venue. Le chemin sera long jusqu’à la fin des temps. Il en précise les signes qui affoleront les nations : guerres, catastrophes naturelles et cosmiques, persécutions, chute de Jérusalem. Par la petite parabole du figuier, il se veut rassurant. C’est là une interpellation qui doit nous aider discerner les signes de la venue du Règne. En Bon pédagogue, Jésus dit en peu de mots ce que doit être l’attitude du disciple. Sa parole allie clarté et fermeté, deux qualités essentielles à la foi : clarté au service du discernement dont nous devons faire preuve, fermeté visant l’ardeur de la foi dont nous devons témoigner. En affirmant que ses paroles ne passeront pas, Jésus rassure et dit la confiance qu’il met en ses disciples, alors que sa Passion est proche. Pour tenir dans la foi, pour vivre en chrétien, entre le « déjà là » du salut et le « pas encore » du Royaume, il nous faut aussi la patience nourrit par la Parole. Que l’Esprit Saint affermisse notre foi, qu’il soutienne notre persévérance et notre vigilance dans l’attente du Seigneur.

Saint Andrew, Apostle
Feast
He was born in Bethsaida, in Galilee, and worked as a fisherman. He became one of the first to follow Jesus and introduced his brother, Simon Peter, to him. He became patron saint of Scotland because according to legend some of his bones were brought and buried at the place where the town of St Andrew’s now stands.
Entrance Antiphon: Mt 4: 18-19
Beside the Sea of Galilee, the Lord saw two brothers, Peter and Andrew, and he said to them: Come after me and I will make you fishers of men.

We humbly implore your majesty, O Lord, that, just as the blessed Apostle Andrew was for your Church a preacher and pastor, so he may be for us a constant intercessor before you. First reading: Romans 10:9-18
If your lips confess that Jesus is Lord and if you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved. By believing from the heart you are made righteous; by confessing with your lips you are saved. When scripture says: those who believe in him will have no cause for shame, it makes no distinction between Jew and Greek: all belong to the same Lord who is rich enough, however many ask his help, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But they will not ask his help unless they believe in him, and they will not believe in him unless they have heard of him, and they will not hear of him unless they get a preacher, and they will never have a preacher unless one is sent, but as scripture says: The footsteps of those who bring good news are a welcome sound. Not everyone, of course, listens to the Good News. As Isaiah says: Lord, how many believed what we proclaimed? So faith comes from what is preached, and what is preached comes from the word of Christ. Let me put the question: is it possible that they did not hear? Indeed they did; in the words of the psalm, their voice has gone out through all the earth, and their message to the ends of the world.

Meditation
From natural fishing (fish) to spiritual fishing (souls), Peter and Andrew, James and his brother John, freely made, at the request of the Lord Jesus, a crucial passage for the rest of their lives. “Immediately, leaving their nets, they followed him.” By turning their backs on their past and accepting to follow the Master of the harvest without detour, these men immediately pass from an ordinary life to an extraordinary life. Yes, every vocation is truly a mystery! That is why it is difficult to pinpoint the criteria for missionary recruitment in the Gospels. If we are attentive, we simply notice that God calls us at his own time as we are, but he invites us to be as he wants us. Only God knows why he needs us! It is not we who have chosen him; it is the other way round. Let us pray for all vocations so that they may have God Himself as their source and foundation.

SAINT André, Apôtre
Fete
André, pêcheur de Bethsaïde, était disciple de Jean Baptiste. Éclairé par le témoignage de son maître, il reconnaît en Jésus le Messie et fait partager sa découverte à son frère Simon-Pierre. Il quitte tout pour suivre son nouveau maître qui le choisira pour en faire l’un des Douze. Il aura la joie de sceller son témoignage en mourant crucifié comme son Seigneur. Il est le patron de l’Église de Constantinople.

1ère lecture : Daniel 5, 1-6.13-14. 16-17.23-28
En ces jours-là, le roi Balthazar donna un somptueux festin pour les grands du royaume au nombre de mille, et il se mit à boire du vin en leur présence. Excité par le vin, il fit apporter les vases d’or et d’argent que son père Nabucodonosor avait enlevés au temple de Jérusalem ; il voulait y boire, avec ses grands, ses épouses et ses concubines. On apporta donc les vases d’or enlevés du Temple, de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem, et le roi, ses grands, ses épouses et ses concubines s’en servirent pour boire. Après avoir bu, ils entonnèrent la louange de leurs dieux d’or et d’argent, de bronze et de fer, de bois et de pierre. Soudain on vit apparaître, en face du candélabre, les doigts d’une main d’homme qui se mirent à écrire sur la paroi de la salle du banquet royal. Lorsque le roi vit cette main qui écrivait, il changea de couleur, son esprit se troubla, il fut pris de tremblement, et ses genoux s’entrechoquèrent. On fit venir Daniel devant le roi et le roi lui dit:
« Es-tu bien Daniel, l’un de ces déportés amenés de Juda par le roi mon père ? J’ai entendu dire qu’un esprit des dieux réside en toi, et qu’on trouve chez toi une clairvoyance, une intelligence et une sagesse extraordinaires. J’ai entendu dire aussi que tu es capable de donner des interprétations et de résoudre des questions difficiles. Si tu es capable de lire cette inscription et de me l’interpréter, tu seras revêtu de pourpre, tu porteras un collier d’or et tu seras le troisième personnage du royaume. » Daniel répondit au roi : « Garde tes cadeaux, et offre à d’autres tes présents ! Moi, je lirai au roi l’inscription et je lui en donnerai l’interprétation. Tu t’es élevé contre le Seigneur du ciel ; tu t’es fait apporter les vases de sa Maison et vous y avez bu du vin, toi, les grands de ton royaume, tes épouses et tes concubines ; vous avez entonné la louange de vos dieux d’or et d’argent, de bronze et de fer, de bois et de pierre, ces dieux qui ne voient pas, qui n’entendent pas, qui ne savent rien. Mais tu n’as pas rendu gloire au Dieu qui tient dans sa main ton souffle et tous tes chemins. C’est pourquoi il a envoyé cette main et fait tracer cette inscription. En voici le texte : Mené, Mené, Teqèl, Ou-Pharsine. Et voici l’interprétation de ces mots : Mené (c’est-à-dire “compté”) : Dieu a compté les jours de ton règne et y a mis fin ; Teqèl (c’est-à-dire “pesé”) : tu as été pesé dans la balance et tu as été trouvé trop léger ; Ou-Pharsine (c’est-à-dire “partagé”) : ton royaume a été partagé et donné aux Mèdes et aux Perses. »

Méditation
Le nom de Jésus a marqué l’histoire du salut comme celle de l’humanité. On parle souvent du Jésus de la Foi et du Jésus de l’histoire. Mais il s’agit de la même personne. En effet, appartenir à Jésus ou même dire du bien de Lui dans le temps c’était s’attirer de gros ennuis. Conscient de cela, Jésus mets ses disciples en garde et les invite au courage, à la persévérance dans la mission. Il rassure les uns et les autres de sa présence continuelle même dans l’épreuve ou la persécution. Pourquoi avons-nous peur de souffrir au nom de notre foi en Jésus-Christ ? Pourquoi doutons-nous que Dieu assurera toujours notre défense ? Le plus beau témoignage qu’on puisse rendre au Christ demeure le martyre. A l’exemple de Saint Saturnin et ses compagnons prouvons notre attachement au Christ Jésus.

SAINT Saturnin
et ses compagnons
L’histoire de saint Saturnin a partie liée avec celle de Datif, Félix, Marie, Thélice, Ampèle, Emérite, Rogatien, Victoire, Hilarion et bien d’autres encore. Martyrs à Carthage pendant qu’ils célébraient les saints mystères, quelques uns parmi eux furent mis à mort après de cruelles tortures ; d’autres furent jetés en prison et moururent sous les coups, la faim, la pesanteur des chaines et l’insalubrité des lieux.

1ère lecture : Daniel 2, 31-45
En ces jours-là, Daniel dit à Nabucodonosor : « Ô roi, voici ta vision: une énorme statue se dressait devant toi, une grande statue, extrêmement brillante et d’un aspect terrifiant. Elle avait la tête en or fin ; la poitrine et les bras, en argent; le ventre et les cuisses, en bronze ; ses jambes étaient en fer, et ses pieds, en partie de fer, en partie d’argile. Tu étais en train de regarder : soudain une pierre se détacha d’une montagne, sans qu’on y ait touché; elle vint frapper les pieds de fer et d’argile de la statue et les pulvérisa. Alors, furent pulvérisés tout ensemble le fer et l’argile, le bronze, l’argent et l’or ; ils devinrent comme la paille qui s’envole en été au moment du battage : ils furent emportés par le vent sans laisser de traces. Quant à la pierre qui avait frappé la statue elle devint un énorme rocher qui remplit toute la terre. Voici le songe ; et maintenant, en présence du roi, nous allons en donner l’interprétation. C’est à toi, le roi des rois, que le Dieu du ciel a donné royauté, puissance, force et gloire. C’est à toi qu’il a remis les enfants des hommes, les bêtes des champs et les oiseaux du ciel, quelle que soit leur demeure ; c’est toi qu’il a rendu maître de toute chose : la tête d’or, c’est toi. Après toi s’élèvera un autre royaume, inférieur au tien, ensuite un troisième royaume, un royaume de bronze qui dominera la terre entière. Il y aura encore un quatrième royaume, dur comme le fer. De même que le fer brise et écrase tout, de même, il pulvérisera et brisera tous les royaumes. Tu as vu les pieds qui étaient en partie d’argile et en partie de fer : en effet, ce royaume sera divisé ; il aura en lui la force du fer, comme tu as vu du fer mêlé à l’argile. Ces pieds en partie de fer et en partie d’argile signifient que le royaume sera en partie fort et en partie faible. Tu as vu le fer associé à l’argile parce que les royaumes s’uniront par des mariages ; mais ils ne tiendront pas ensemble, de même que le fer n’adhère pas à l’argile. Or, au temps de ces rois, le Dieu du ciel suscitera un royaume qui ne sera jamais détruit et dont la royauté ne passera pas à un autre peuple. Ce dernier royaume pulvérisera et anéantira tous les autres, mais lui-même subsistera à jamais. C’est ainsi que tu as vu une pierre se détacher de la montagne sans qu’on y ait touché, et pulvériser le fer, le bronze, l’argile, l’argent et l’or. Le grand Dieu a fait connaître au roi ce qui doit ensuite advenir. Le songe disait vrai, l’interprétation est digne de foi. »

En ce temps-là, comme certains parlaient du Temple, des belles pierres et des ex-voto qui le décoraient, Jésus leur déclara : « Ce que vous contemplez, des jours viendront où il n’en restera pas pierre sur pierre : tout sera détruit. » Ils lui demandèrent : « Maître, quand cela arrivera-t-il ? Et quel sera le signe que cela est sur le point d’arriver ? » Jésus répondit : « Prenez garde de ne pas vous laisser égarer, car beaucoup viendront sous mon nom, et diront : “C’est moi”, ou encore : “Le moment est tout proche. Ne marchez pas derrière eux! Quand vous entendrez parler de guerres et de désordres, ne soyez pas terrifiés : il faut que cela arrive d’abord, mais ce ne sera pas aussitôt la fin. » Alors Jésus ajouta : « On se dressera nation contre nation, royaume contre royaume. Il y aura de grands tremblements de terre et, en divers lieux, des famines et des épidémies ; des phénomènes effrayants surviendront, et de grands signes venus du ciel. »

Méditation
Cet extrait du troisième Evangile traite de la ruine du Temple de Jérusalem : un bijou architectural ; un chef-d’œuvre dont était jaloux tous les fils d’Israël. Mais, Jésus annonce éphémère la finitude du Temple qui, bien que fait de mains d’hommes, était admirablement contemplé. Cette révélation future de Jésus est effroyable et fait paniquer au point où ses interlocuteurs demandent des signes précurseurs. Comme toujours, Jésus garde le secret sur cette question. Néanmoins il nous invite au discernement : « prenez garde de ne pas vous égarer… ». Tous ceux qui parlent de Dieu ne sont pas forcément à son service. Demandons au seigneur d’ouvrir nos yeux de la foi pour que nous sachions le reconnaitre en tout temps et partout sans jamais le confondre.

SAINT Saturninus
St. Saturninus was bishop of Toulouse and Martyr. He converted a great number of idolaters by his preaching and miracles. This is all the account we have of him till the time of his holy martyrdom. The martyrdom of this saint probably happened m the reign of Valerian in 257.

King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for his noblemen; a thousand of them attended, and he drank wine in company with this thousand. As he sipped his wine, Belshazzar gave orders for the gold and silver vessels to be brought which his father Nebuchadnezzar had looted from the sanctuary in Jerusalem, so that the king, his noblemen, his wives and his singing women could drink out of them. The gold and silver vessels looted from the sanctuary of the Temple of God in Jerusalem were brought in, and the king, his noblemen, his wives and his singing women drank out of them. They drank their wine and praised their gods of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone. Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared, and began to write on the plaster of the palace wall, directly behind the lamp-stand; and the king could see the hand as it wrote. The king turned pale with alarm: his thigh-joints went slack and his knees began to knock. Daniel was brought into the king’s presence; the king said to Daniel, “Are you the Daniel who was one of the Judean exiles brought by my father the king from Judah? I am told that the spirit of God Most Holy lives in you, and that you are known for your perception, intelligence and marvellous wisdom. As I am told that you are able to give interpretations and to unravel difficult problems, if you can read the writing and tell me what it means, you shall be dressed in purple, and have a chain of gold put round your neck, and be third in rank in the kingdom.” Then Daniel spoke up in the presence of the king. “Keep your gifts for yourself,” he said, “and give your rewards to others. I will read the writing to the king without them, and tell him what it means. You have defied the Lord of heaven, you have had the vessels from his Temple brought to you, and you, your noblemen, your wives and your singing women have drunk your wine out of them. You have praised gods of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone, which cannot either see, hear or understand; but you have given no glory to the God who holds your breath and all your fortunes in his hands. That is why he has sent the hand which, by itself, has written these words. The writing reads: Mene, Mene, Tekel and Parsin. Jesus said to his disciples: “Men will seize you and persecute you; they will hand you over to the synagogues and to imprisonment, and bring you before kings and governors because of my name – and that will be your opportunity to bear witness. Keep this carefully in mind: you are not to prepare your defence, because I myself shall give you an eloquence and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to resist or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relations and friends; and some of you will be put to death. You will be hated by all men on account of my name, but not a hair of your head will be lost. Your endurance will win you your lives.”

Meditation
The name of Jesus resounds in the history of salvation as well as that of all humanity. We often speak of the Jesus of faith and the Jesus of history. But they are the same person. Indeed, to belong to Jesus or even to speak well of Him in the past was to get into big trouble. Aware of this, Jesus warns his disciples and invites them to courage and to persevere in mission. He reassures them that he is always there, even in times of trial and persecution. Why are we afraid to suffer for the sake of our faith in Jesus Christ? Why do we doubt that God will always defend us? The most beautiful witnessing we can bear to Christ is martyrdom. Following the example of Saint Saturnin and his companions, let us show prove of our attachment to Christ Jesus.
