Meditation
In today’s gospel, Jesus begins by asking, “To what shall I compare this generation?” This question serves as a rebuke to the stubborn and immature attitude of the Jews who are resisting change. Their discontent is evident as nothing seems to satisfy them. John the Baptist, leading an austere life, is labeled a demoniac while Jesus, who partakes in eating and drinking, is accused of gluttony and drunkenness. This attitude is not unfamiliar in our contemporary world, where everyone desires things to align with their preferences. Nonetheless, the call is to authentically change for Christ by seeking His grace and embracing a love rooted in the person of Christ. Through this transformation, we can move beyond living solely for our desires to align our lives with Christ’s teachings and example.

Pope Saint Damasus I (304 – 384)

A Spaniard, he was born about 305. Joining the Roman clergy, he was elected Pope in 366, in calamitous times. He held many synods against heretics and schismatics. He promoted the cult of the martyrs. He died in 384.

Meditation
Jesus acclaims John the Baptist as the greatest among those born of a woman, yet, surprisingly refers to him as the least in the kingdom of heaven. Why such a stark contrast? Perhaps it stems from the fact that John did not experience the cross and the love of Jesus in the same way that even the least among Christians would. However, this does not imply superiority over Saint John, especially when we fail to acknowledge the love that God has shown us, replacing gratitude with criticism and complaints. A notable aspect of Saint John’s life was his humility, a quality notably scarce in our society today. Therefore, we are encouraged to embody and express our professed beliefs in a radically positive manner. Living out these values becomes imperative, reminding us of the humility exemplified by Saint John and encouraging us to appreciate the love God has bestowed upon us.

Saint Melchiades (d. 314)

Purple
Born in Africa, Melchiades was pope in Rome when the Church obtained its freedom after centuries of persecution. He ordered the construction of many churches and was the first pope to occupy the cathedral of St John Lateran. He was pope for only 3 years.
Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Hab 2: 3; 1 Cor 4: 5
The Lord will come and he will not delay. He will illumine what is hidden in darkness and reveal himself to all the nations.

Almighty God, who command us to prepare the way for Christ the Lord, grant in your kindness, we pray, that no infirmity may weary us as we long for the comforting presence of our heavenly physician. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Isaiah 40:25-31
‘To whom could you liken me and who could be my equal?’ says the Holy One. Lift your eyes and look. Who made these stars if not he who drills them like an army, calling each one by name? So mighty is his power, so great his strength, that not one fails to answer. How can you say, Jacob, how can you insist, Israel, ‘My destiny is hidden from the Lord, my rights are ignored by my God’? Meditation
In today’s gospel reading, Jesus discusses the concepts of “rest” and “yoke,” shedding light on the nature of these burdens and the freedom they entail. When he mentions “yoke,” He encompasses various forms of affliction, bondage, and obedience to the law. However, He transforms this notion, presenting it as freedom in submission to the will of God. Furthermore, the “rest” Jesus speaks of is an invitation that imparts meaning to the diverse burdens we carry. This invitation does not imply an absence of difficulties or trials in life; instead, it signifies that, with Jesus, we can face any challenge. He is ever present to assist, console, redirect, and guide us with His love. The “rest” offered by Jesus is a profound reassurance and support, enabling us to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and strength derived from our connection with Him.

Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin
(1474 – 1548)

He was born in 1474 in Mexico. As an adult he embraced Christianity and he and his wife were baptized. In 1531 the Mother of God appeared to him. Through the purity of his faith, his humility and his fervour, a church was built, in honour of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He devoted himself to the care of the sanctuary and the reception of pilgrims until his death in 1548.

Meditation
In the parable of the lost sheep, Jesus conveys the fundamental message that God values each individual, regardless of how far they may stray from Him. He emphasises that God never neglects any of His children, tirelessly seeking those who are lost due to sin because of His boundless love for them. While God’s love and pursuit are unwavering, the parable also calls us to reflect on our role in the community of believers. In the assembly of God’s children, it is crucial to be mindful of our behaviour, attitude, and words, ensuring that we do not become a stumbling block for others. We must not strive to be the reason why some people may leave the church due to our unruly conduct. Acknowledging that we have all fallen short and may have caused others to stumble in their faith, there is still an opportunity for redemption. By becoming truly committed Christians, we can still make amends and contribute positively to the unity and growth of the faith community.

The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Solemnity

The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is the doctrine that the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin, a grace that enabled Mary to give a “Yes” to becoming mother of the incarnate God, Jesus. The doctrine was formally defined as a doctrine of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1854.

I rejoice heartily in the Lord, in my God is the joy of my soul; for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation, and wrapped me in a mantle of justice, like a bride adorned with her jewels.

Meditation
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception, celebrated today, centres not on the conception of Jesus in His mother’s womb but on Mary’s conception within her mother, Saint Anne. Mary, having been conceived and born without original sin, is the focus of this feast. Although Luke’s account of the conception of Jesus is used in the Liturgy, the fact is that we only venerate Mary because of her Son. The Angel Gabriel initially describes her in these words: “Hail Mary, full of grace.” Mary’s life poses a challenge for us Christians, exemplifying virginity, purity, and courageous acceptance and embodiment of the good news.

Que le Dieu de la persévérance et du réconfort vous donne d’être d’accord les uns avec les autres selon le Christ Jésus. Ainsi, d’un même cœur, d’une seule voix, vous rendrez gloire à Dieu, le Père de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ. Accueillez-vous donc les uns les autres, comme le Christ vous a accueillis pour la gloire de Dieu. En ces jours-là, paraît Jean le Baptiste, qui proclame dans le désert de Judée : « Convertissez-vous, car le royaume des Cieux est tout proche. » Jean est celui que désignait la parole prononcée par le prophète Isaïe : Voix de celui qui crie dans le désert : Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, rendez droits ses sentiers Lui, Jean, portait un vêtement de poils de chameau, et une ceinture de cuir autour des reins ; il avait pour nourriture des sauterelles et du miel sauvage. Alors Jérusalem, toute la Judée et toute la région du Jourdain se rendaient auprès de lui, et ils étaient baptisés par lui dans le Jourdain en reconnaissant leurs péchés. Voyant beaucoup de pharisiens et de sadducéens se présenter à son baptême, il leur dit : « Engeance de vipères ! Qui vous a appris à fuir la colère qui vient ? Produisez donc un fruit digne de la conversion. N’allez pas dire en vous-mêmes : ‘Nous avons Abraham pour père’ ; car, je vous le dis : des pierres que voici, Dieu peut faire surgir des enfants à Abraham. Déjà la cognée se trouve à la racine des arbres : tout arbre qui ne produit pas de bons fruits va être coupé et jeté au feu. Moi, je vous baptise dans l’eau, en vue de la conversion. Mais celui qui vient derrière moi est plus fort que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de lui retirer ses sandales. Lui vous baptisera dans l’Esprit Saint et le feu. Il tient dans sa main la pelle à vanner, il va nettoyer son aire à battre le blé, et il amassera son grain dans le grenier ; quant à la paille, il la brûlera au feu qui ne s’éteint pas. »

Méditation
Toutes les lectures du deuxième dimanche de l’Avent tournent autour de cette idée: le Christ vient pour réaliser l’accord parfait. Et la figure de Jean-Baptiste évoque celle des grands prophètes de la première Alliance: il accomplit l’Ecriture en la vivant d’une manière très juste. Il n’a pas peur de toucher les causes profondes du désordre qui peut régner en chacun de ses interlocuteurs. Il annonce un jugement assez redoutable pour corriger les défaillances de ceux qui se croient justes. Cette figure authentique nous fait ressentir avec d’autant plus d’acuité le manque constant de vrais prophètes dans l’Eglise et dans le monde. Quelques grandes figures se détachent de la tiédeur ambiante, mais on les pressent, ce sont tous les fidèles qui sont appelés à devenir prophètes, là est l’urgence de la Bonne Nouvelle du Royaume qui vient.

S’il est difficile de discerner dans la légende de saint Nicolas la part de l’histoire, il reste qu’il fut évêque de Myre en Asie Mineure au moment de la crise arienne, au début du 4e siècle, et qu’il défendit la foi en la divinité de Jésus. Ce saint très populaire apparaît comme la bonté même.

Tu es proche, Seigneur : tous tes chemins sont droits. Dès l’origine, j’ai su que ton alliance était fondée pour toujours.
Prière d’ouverture
Déploie, Seigneur, ta puissance, soutiens-nous de ta force, afin que le salut retardé par nos fautes soit hâté par l’indulgence de ta grâce. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Is 30, 19-21.23-26
Ainsi parle le Seigneur, le Dieu saint d’Israël : Peuple de Sion, toi qui habites Jérusalem, tu ne pleureras jamais plus. À l’appel de ton cri, le Seigneur te fera grâce. Dès qu’il t’aura entendu, il te répondra. Le Seigneur te donnera du pain dans la détresse, et de l’eau dans l’épreuve. Celui qui t’instruit ne se dérobera plus et tes yeux le verront. Tes oreilles entendront derrière toi une parole : « Voici le chemin, prends-le!», et cela, que tu ailles à droite ou à gauche. Le Seigneur te donnera la pluie pour la semence que tu auras jetée en terre, et le pain que produira la terre sera riche et nourrissant. Ton bétail ira paître, ce jour-là, sur de vastes pâturages. Les bœufs et les ânes qui travaillent dans les champs mangeront un fourrage salé, étalé avec la pelle et la fourche. Sur toute haute montagne, sur toute colline élevée couleront des ruisseaux, au jour du grand massacre, quand tomberont les tours de défense. La lune brillera comme le soleil, le soleil brillera sept fois plus, – autant que sept jours de lumière – le jour où le Seigneur pansera les plaies de son peuple et guérira ses meurtrissures.

Il est bon de fêter notre Dieu, il est beau de chanter sa louange ! Le Seigneur rebâtit Jérusalem, il rassemble les déportés d’Israël.
Il guérit les cœurs brisés et soigne leurs blessures. Il compte le nombre des étoiles, il donne à chacune un nom.
Il est grand, il est fort, notre Maître: nul n’a mesuré son intelligence. Le Seigneur élève les humbles et rabaisse jusqu’à terre les impies.

Alléluia. Alléluia. Le Seigneur est notre juge, il nous donne des lois, le Seigneur est notre roi : c’est lui qui nous sauve. Alléluia. (Is 33, 22)
Évangile : Mt 9, 35 – 10, 1.5a.6-8
En ce temps-là, Jésus parcourait toutes les villes et tous les villages, enseignant dans leurs synagogues, proclamant l’Évangile du Royaume et guérissant toute maladie et toute infirmité. Voyant les foules, Jésus fut saisi de compassion envers elles parce qu’elles étaient désemparées et abattues comme des brebis sans berger. Il dit alors à ses disciples : «La moisson est abondante, mais les ouvriers sont peu nombreux. Priez donc le maître de la moisson d’envoyer des ouvriers pour sa moisson. » Alors Jésus appela ses douze disciples et leur donna le pouvoir d’expulser les esprits impurs et de guérir toute maladie et toute infirmité. Ces douze, Jésus les envoya en mission avec les instructions suivantes : « Allez vers les brebis perdues de la maison d’Israël. Sur votre route, proclamez que le royaume des Cieux est tout proche. Guérissez les malades, ressuscitez les morts, purifiez les lépreux, expulsez les démons. Vous avez reçu gratuitement: donnez gratuitement. »

Seigneur, nous ne pourrons jamais t’offrir que les biens venus de toi: accepte ceux que nous t’apportons; Et puisque c’est toi qui nous donnes maintenant de célébrer l’eucharistie, fais qu’elle soit pour nous le gage du salut éternel. Par Jésus, le Christ, notre Seigneur. Amen

Méditation
Comme cela simplifierait les comptes et les rapports entre les hommes! Il ne pourrait plus y avoir de misère sur terre, d’enfants mourant de faim! Encore faut-il savoir donner gratuitement, sans faire sentir à l’autre le poids de notre aide matérielle ou spirituelle. Combien de fois dans une journée sommes-nous capables de donner gratuitement, sans retour, avec la spontanéité d’un cœur d’enfant? C’est aussi un ordre de Jésus: faire fructifier les dons reçus, non pour soi en pur égoïste, mais pour les autres. Que celui qui a moins ne soit pas jaloux de celui qui possède davantage! Savoir accueillir avec simplicité le don du pauvre, comme celui du riche avec ce sourire d’enfant. Savoir écouter attentivement ce collègue ou ce voisin en difficulté. Efforçons de le faire sans rien attendre en retour. Jésus seul est notre récompense.

He is the patron saint of pawnbrokers, whose insignia of three golden balls represent the three purses of gold he is said to have given secretly to a poor man who could not afford dowries for his three daughters.

Jesus made a tour through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom and curing all kinds of diseases and sickness. And when he saw the crowds he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest.’ He summoned his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseases and sickness. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as follows: ‘Go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils. You received without charge, give without charge.’

Meditation
In our gospel reading, Jesus has been tirelessly making the rounds of different towns and villages, ministering to the people with love, pity, and compassion while His disciples keenly observe and learn from Him. Eventually, He bestows upon them authority over unclean spirits, empowering them to good works akin to His. Jesus is extending this same charge to us today. He emphasises that the spiritual gifts we have received from Him should be shared selflessly with others, without expecting any personal reward. Our attitude should reflect our preference of God over material gain. We are therefore called to share the gifts of God bestowed upon us, giving all glory to God, and to Him alone.

En ce jour-là, les sourds entendront les paroles du livre. Quant aux aveugles, sortant de l’obscurité et des ténèbres, leurs yeux verront. Les humbles se réjouiront de plus en plus dans le Seigneur, les pauvres gens exulteront à cause du Dieu Saint d’Israël. J’ai demandé une chose au Seigneur, la seule que je cherche : habiter la maison du Seigneur tous les jours de ma vie.
Mais j’en suis sûr, je verrai les bontés du Seigneur sur la terre des vivants. « Espère le Seigneur, sois fort et prends courage ; espère le Seigneur.»

Aveugles, nous le sommes, aussi longtemps que, cheminant ici-bas, nous ne Le connaissons pas tel qu’Il est dans sa gloire. Nous ne Le voyons pas et pourtant nous nous sentons irrésistiblement attirés vers Lui. La foi de notre baptême, la présence en nous de son Esprit, nous font crier vers Lui: «Aie pitié de nous !» Et il me touche les yeux. Et je vois juste assez pour mettre mes pas dans ses pas et le suivre sur la route qui monte à Jérusalem en chantant : Le seigneur est ma lumière et mon salut. Alors voici que de l’obscurité et des ténèbres d’un monde de mensonge et de violence, commence à poindre l’aurore. Le Christ n’est-il pas là qui chemine avec nous et nous entraîne, à travers sa Passion et sa Mort, dans l’intarissable source de lumière et de joie ? Aujourd’hui redire : « Jésus, aie pitié de moi ! » Mais pas seulement du bout des lèvres.
