Saint Birinus
Psalter: Week I
Purple
Saint Birinus was sent to England as a missionary by Pope Honorius I about the year 634. He died about 650 and the main Church of the West Saxons which he had established at Dorchester-on-Thames was later moved to Winchester, as were the relics of Saint Birinus.

But the lowly will rejoice in the Lord even more and the poorest exult in the Holy One of Israel; for tyrants shall be no more, and scoffers vanish, and all be destroyed who are disposed to do evil: those who gossip to incriminate others, those who try at the gate to trip the arbitrator and get the upright man’s case dismissed for groundless reasons. Therefore the Lord speaks, the God of the House of Jacob, Abraham’s redeemer: No longer shall Jacob be ashamed, no more shall his face grow pale, for he shall see what my hands have done in his midst, he shall hold my name holy. They will hallow the Holy One of Jacob, stand in awe of the God of Israel. Erring spirits will learn wisdom and murmurers accept instruction.

Meditation
In today’s gospel scene, two blind men are depicted fervently pursuing Jesus. This raises the question of why Jesus, known for compassion and immediate healing of various afflictions, would allow two men to chase after Him. Despite the potential obstacles, such as stumbling over stones, the blind men persistently pursue Him until they receive their healing. Similarly, we are called to deepen our faith in God and exhibit persistence in presenting our prayers before Him, despite emotional, physical, or psychological obstacles involved. These hindrances may include sin in the heart; carnal motives, and more.

He was born of a Christian family in Damascus in the second half of the seventh century. He wrote many theological treatises in a dangerously clear and accessible style. Sometimes known as “the last of the Church Fathers,” he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1883.

Meditation
In this gospel passage, Jesus begins by saying: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.” He emphasises that entry into His kingdom is reserved for those who do God’s will, warning against morally corrupt prophets and miracle workers, who will face rejection. He further illustrates with a comparison between two kinds of builders – one who builds upon solid rock, and another who builds on sand. He commends the builder using solid rock, symbolising Jesus and His teachings. This what we are called to emulate, extending beyond mere listening to active and positive actions.

Méditation
Crier vers le Seigneur, s’adresser à lui vibrants de foi et d’espérance, faire sienne la prière des psaumes, désirer cette merveilleuse intimité avec Dieu, n’est-ce pas le cœur de notre vie chrétienne? Et pourtant, comme l’Evangile nous met en garde contre l’illusion! Car la seule chose qui importe, ce n’est pas de dire, mais de faire, de vivre ce que nous disons, et de le dire afin de le vivre plus profondément. Cherchons-nous à connaître, faisons-nous et aimons-nous la Volonté de Dieu, quitte à sacrifier la nôtre? Lequel des deux personnes sommes-nous: l’insensé ou le prévoyant? Celui qui crie «Seigneur !» et s’arrête là, ou celui dont l’écoute de la parole de Dieu le conduit à entrer dans le projet de Dieu, à bâtir jour après jour sa vie sur le Roc, le Christ. Reconnaissons que nous sommes parfois l’un et l’autre à la fois. A certaines heures, nous le cherchons et faisons sa volonté, à d’autres pas ! Demandons-lui de rendre nos cœurs libres, attachés à sa seule volonté.

Saint François xavier,

Prêtre en 1537, François (1506-1552), premier missionnaire jésuite, partit pour Goa en 1541. En une douzaine d’années, il parcourut près de cent mille kilomètres pour évangéliser l’Inde, Ceylan, les Moluques et le Japon. Il meurt au seuil de la Chine, dont l’accès lui est refusé. Il est le patron des missions.

Comme il est beau de voir courir sur les montagnes le messager qui annonce la paix, le messager de la Bonne Nouvelle, qui annonce le salut.
Prière d’ouverture
Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que la prédication de saint François Xavier appelle à toi de nombreux peuples d’Orient ; accorde à tous les baptisés le même zèle pour la foi et fais que ton Église se réjouisse d’avoir, partout dans le monde, de nouveaux enfants. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Isaïe 25, 6-10a
En ce jour- là, le Seigneur de l’univers préparera pour tous les peuples, sur sa montagne, un festin de viandes grasses et de vins capiteux, un festin de viandes succulentes et de vins décantés. Sur cette montagne, il fera disparaître le voile de deuil qui enveloppe tous les peuples et le linceul qui couvre toutes les nations. Il fera disparaître la mort pour toujours. Le Seigneur Dieu essuiera les larmes sur tous les visages, et par toute la terre il effacera l’humiliation de son peuple. Le Seigneur a parlé. Et ce jour- là, on dira : « Voici notre Dieu, en lui nous espérions, et il nous a sauvés ; c’est lui le Seigneur, en lui nous espérions; exultons, réjouissons-nous : il nous a sauvés ! » Car la main du Seigneur reposera sur cette montagne.

Évangile : Mt 15, 29-37
En ce temps- là, Jésus arriva près de la mer de Galilée. Il gravit la montagne et là, il s’assit. De grandes foules s’approchèrent de lui, avec des boiteux, des aveugles, des estropiés, des muets, et beaucoup d’autres encore ; on les déposa à ses pieds et il les guérit. Alors la foule était dans l’admiration en voyant des muets qui parlaient, des estropiés rétablis, des boiteux qui marchaient, des aveugles qui voyaient ; et ils rendirent gloire au Dieu d’Israël. Jésus appela ses disciples et leur dit : « Je suis saisi de compassion pour cette foule, car depuis trois jours déjà ils restent auprès de moi, et n’ont rien à manger. Je ne veux pas les renvoyer à jeun, ils pourraient défaillir en chemin. » Les disciples lui disent : « Où trouverons-nous dans un désert assez de pain pour rassasier une telle foule ? » Jésus leur demanda : « Combien de pains avez-vous ? » Ils dirent : « Sept, et quelques petits poissons. » Alors il ordonna à la foule de s’asseoir par terre. Il prit les sept pains et les poissons ; rendant grâce, il les rompit, et il les donnait aux disciples, et les disciples aux foules. Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés.
Prière sur les offrandes
Accepte les offrandes que nous t’apportons, Seigneur, en la fête de saint François Xavier : il fut entraîné vers les terres lointaines par sa passion pour le salut des hommes ; puissions-nous, à notre tour, nous comporter en témoins de l’Évangile, pour nous hâter vers toi avec un grand nombre de frères. Que cette eucharistie, Seigneur, allume en nous ce foyer d’amour où saint François se consumait pour le salut des âmes ; plus fidèles à notre vocation, nous pourrons obtenir avec lui le salaire promis aux bons ouvriers. Par Jésus.
Méditation
C’est un cri qui nous rassemble aujourd’hui. Un cri qui jaillit du cœur de Jésus : « J’ai pitié de la foule ». Il nous enseigne beaucoup sur l’amour clairvoyant et efficace du Seigneur. Non seulement nous sommes invités à tourner notre regard vers le dernier avènement du Seigneur, mais aussi et surtout à nous préparer dès maintenant. Il connaît le cœur de chacun : ses richesses, ses blessures, sa faim, sa soif. Il nous demande simplement notre modeste participation (sept pains et quelques poissons) et de prendre place. Oui, c’est aujourd’hui que s’accomplit la parole d’Isaïe : « Voici notre Dieu, en lui nous espérons, il nous a sauvés ».

Saint Francis Xavier (1506 – 1552)

White
He was born in Spain, 1506 and ordained priest in 1537. In 1541 the Pope sent him as part of a mission to India, and he spent the rest of his life in the East. He died of fever and exhaustion on the Chinese island of Shangchwan in 1552.

I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will tell of your name to my kin.
Collect
O God, who through the preaching of Saint Francis Xavier won many peoples to yourself, grant that the hearts of the faithful may burn with the same zeal for the faith and that Holy Church may everywhere rejoice in an abundance of offspring. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: 1 Corinthians 9:16-19,22-23
I do not boast of preaching the gospel, since it is a duty which has been laid on me; I should be punished if I did not preach it! Meditation
In today’s gospel, Jesus reveals Himself to His eleven apostles and commissions them to go out to the whole world, and proclaim the good news to all creation, instructing them on the characteristics of a true believer. Following His ascension to His Father in heaven, they promptly swing into action. As believers of this age and time, are we genuinely convinced of our Christian faith? Without this conviction, our impact on this our generation will be limited. We must firmly believe that God can use us for His mighty works. However, obedience to the principles of the kingdom is crucial, and we must adhere to them promptly. Therefore, it is essential to remember that our ability to make positive exploits lies in God’s providence and whatever we may achieve is for His glory.

En réponse à nos appels, Seigneur, accorde ton secours à ceux qui luttent et qui peinent : que la présence au milieu de nous de celui qui doit venir, ton Fils bien-aimé, nous redonne courage et nous préserve de la dégradation du péché. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Is 11, 1-10
En ce jour-là, un rameau sortira de la souche de Jessé, père de David, un rejeton jaillira de ses racines. Sur lui reposera l’esprit du Seigneur : esprit de sagesse et de discernement, esprit de conseil et de force, esprit de connaissance et de crainte du Seigneur – qui lui inspirera la crainte du Seigneur. Il ne jugera pas sur l’apparence ; il ne se prononcera pas sur des rumeurs. Il jugera les petits avec justice ; avec droiture, il se prononcera en faveur des humbles du pays. Du bâton de sa parole, il frappera le pays ; du souffle de ses lèvres, il fera mourir le méchant. La justice est la ceinture de ses hanches ; la fidélité est la ceinture de ses reins. Méditation
Dans l’évangile d’aujourd’hui, Jésus rend grâce à son Père parce qu’il se manifeste aux hommes et d’abord aux tout-petits. Toute la Bible nous dit que ce sont eux, les préférés de Dieu. Souvenez-vous de David, oublié derrière son troupeau de moutons, qui va utiliser sa fronde et surtout sa confiance en Dieu pour abattre le puissant Goliath et sauver ainsi son peuple. La deuxième partie de l’évangile est une bénédiction: heureux les yeux qui voient ce que vous voyez! En lisant quotidiennement la parole de Dieu qui nous est proposée, nous découvrons comment Jésus révèle la bonté de Dieu travers sa vie et ses paroles. C’est un vrai bonheur, puisque Dieu s’est fait homme pour nous montrer son amour. Dieu veut notre vie et fera tout pour la faire grandir et fructifier. A nous d’être attentifs à sa présence dans sa parole et dans nos vies.

First reading: Isaiah 11:1-10

Meditation
Upon careful consideration of Jesus’ words in today’s gospel, there seems to be an element of confusion. He says: “I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children.” It is essential to take these words literally because Jesus intends to convey that He reveals Himself to those with open and humble hearts, possessing a childlike simplicity. Conversely, He does not reveal Himself to those who are proud and arrogant. The lesson for Christians today lies in cultivating childlike simplicity, characterised by unwavering faith in God in all matters, recognising God as their Father. Moreover, it is imperative to emulate Christ in all our interactions.

1ère lecture : Is 2, 1-5
Le prophète Isaïe a reçu cette révélation au sujet de Juda et de Jérusalem : Il arrivera dans l’avenir que la montagne du temple du Seigneur sera placée à la tête des montagnes et dominera les collines. Toutes les nations afflueront vers elle, des peuples nombreux se mettront en marche, et ils diront : « Venez, montons à la montagne du Seigneur, au temple du Dieu de Jacob. Dieu nous appelle à lever les yeux en ce temps de l’Avent. Lever les yeux vers le terme de notre vie : prendre place au festin dans le Royaumes des Cieux. Appel à l’espérance et à l’action à travers la foi du centurion. Dans l’existence du chrétien la priorité appartient à la foi mais l’essentiel est d’espérer de cette espérance qui nous pousse à agir. Oser s’approcher de Jésus, pas pour nous lamenter, mais pour lui dire que notre foi et notre espérance reposent en lui. L’inviter à entrer, lui qui désire prendre chair au cœur de notre vie pour nous guérir et nous sauver. Remettre entre ses mains notre petite foi bien malade pour qu’il la fasse grandir. Oui, il vient quand nous l’appelons. Non pour nous juger, mais pour nous guider par sa Parole qui est Chemin, Vérité et Vie.

Meditation
In today’s Gospel, a Roman centurion approaches Jesus, seeking a cure for his servant. Astonishingly, Jesus responds, “I will come and cure him.” This response leaves the Pharisees shocked, as they consider the centurion a gentile, akin to a dog, a contemptible animal. Moreover, any Jew entering a gentile’s house is deemed religiously unclean. Despite this, the centurion simply asks Jesus just to utter a word, believing it will bring healing to his servant. This episode underscores the centurion’s unwavering faith and trust in the power of God, and his genuine care and concern for his sick servant. He prioritises his servant’s wellbeing over religious conventions. This serves as a reminder for us not to despise anyone on any grounds whatsoever, as God’s love extends to all.

Meditation
The Gospel reading invites us to reflect on the themes of watchfulness and preparation. Jesus speaks of the days of Noah when people were living their lives without any anticipation of the flood that was to come. They were caught unprepared. Similarly, He warns us to be vigilant as we do not know the day or hour of His return. Advent, a season of waiting and preparation, reminds us of Christ’s promise to return. As we prepare to celebrate Christ’s birth during Advent, we should also bear in mind His imminent return. This season calls us to watch for signs of His presence in our lives and to be ready to meet Him whenever He comes. Given the busy natures of our lives, it is easy to become distracted and lose focus of what truly matters. Advent invites us to slow down, reassess our priorities and rekindle our relationship with God. It provides an opportunity to seek reconciliation, forgiveness, and living with hope and expectation. In Advent, let us be prepared to celebrate Christ’s birth and anticipate His glorious return. May we live with hope, faith, and love, as we await His coming so that when He knocks at the door of our hearts, we may open it with joy.
