The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist
John the Baptist is the only saint in the calendar (apart from St Joseph) who has two feasts to himself. One, in August, celebrates his death, and one, in June, celebrates his birth. And this is as it should be, for as Christ himself said, John was the greatest of the sons of men.
Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Ps 118: 46-47
I spoke, O Lord, of your decrees before kings, and was not confounded; I pondered your commands and loved them greatly.
Collect
O God, who willed that Saint John the Baptist should go ahead of your Son both in his birth and in his death, grant that, as he died a Martyr for truth and justice, we too may fight hard for the confession of what you teach. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8
You know yourselves, my brothers, that our visit to you has not proved ineffectual. We had, as you know, been given rough treatment and been grossly insulted at Philippi, and it was our God who gave us the courage to proclaim his Good News to you in the face of great opposition. We have not taken to preaching because we are deluded, or immoral, or trying to deceive anyone; it was God who decided that we were fit to be entrusted with the Good News, and when we are speaking, we are not trying to please men but God, who can read our inmost thoughts. You know very well, and we can swear it before God, that never at any time have our speeches been simply flattery, or a cover for trying to get money; nor have we ever looked for any special honour from men, either from you or anybody else, when we could have imposed ourselves on you with full weight, as apostles of Christ. Instead, we were unassuming. Like a mother feeding and looking after her own children, we felt so devoted and protective towards you, and had come to love you so much, that we were eager to hand over to you not only the Good News but our whole lives as well.

Gospel: Mark 6:17-29
Herod sent to have John arrested, and had him chained up in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife whom he had married. For John had told Herod, “It is against the law for you to have your brother’s wife.” As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kill him; but she was not able to, because Herod was afraid of John, knowing him to be a good and holy man, and gave him his protection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him. An opportunity came on Herod’s birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for his army officers and for the leading figures in Galilee. When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests; so the king said to the girl, “Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.” And he swore her an oath, “I will give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.” She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the Baptist.” The girl hurried straight back to the king and made her request, “I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head, here and now, on a dish.” The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he was reluctant to break his word to her. So the king at once sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John’s head. The man went off and beheaded him in prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When John’s disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Prayer over the Offerings
Through these offerings which we bring you, O Lord, grant that we may make straight your paths, as taught by that voice crying in the desert, Saint John the Baptist, who powerfully sealed his teaching by the shedding of his blood. Through Christ our Lord.
Communion Antiphon: Jn 3:27,30
John answered and said: He must increase; but I must decrease.
Prayer after Communion
Grant, O Lord, as we celebrate the heavenly birth of Saint John the Baptist, that we may revere, for what it signifies, the saving Sacrament we have received and, even more, may rejoice at its clear effects in us. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
John, the forerunner of Jesus, preceded his Lord even in death. Like Jesus, he was put to death by his powerful enemies who found his words too dangerous. This man, seemingly without power, without property, without freedom, possessed the power of truth. Today, human life is so undervalued that many, like John the Baptist, are killed for the slightest reason. We have had to contemplate, and we still contemplate today with bitterness, so much gratuitous violence in our world; may the sufferings of the victims move hearts and arouse souls of good will in their defence.

SAINT AUGUSTIN
Evêque et Docteur de l’Eglise
Augustin fut d’abord un rhéteur africain dissolu ; la prière de sa mère, Monique, obtint la grâce de sa conversion qui fit de lui un cœur brûlant de charité. Cette charité qui anima son labeur pastoral, notamment dans la lutte contre les hérésies, lui inspira la maxime fameuse ‘’Aime et fais ce que tu veux’’. Baptisé à Milan par saint Ambroise, Augustin devint l’aide, puis le successeur de l’évêque d’Hippone. La place d’Augustin dans l’histoire de l’Eglise tient surtout à son œuvre théologique qui lui a mérité le titre de ‘’Docteur de la grâce’

Dans son Eglise, le Seigneur a donné la parole à l’évêque saint Augustin ; il l’a rempli de l’esprit de sagesse et d’intelligence, il l’a revêtu de gloire.

1ère lecture : 1 Th 1, 1-5.8b-10
Paul, Sylvain et Timothée, à l’Église de Thessalonique qui est en Dieu le Père et dans le Seigneur Jésus Christ. À vous, la grâce et la paix. A tout moment, nous rendons grâce à Dieu au sujet de vous tous, en faisant mémoire de vous dans nos prières. Sans cesse, nous nous souvenons que votre foi est active, que votre charité se donne de la peine, que votre espérance tient bon en notre Seigneur Jésus Christ, en présence de Dieu notre Père. Nous le savons, frères bien-aimés de Dieu, vous avez été choisis par lui. En effet, notre annonce de l’Évangile n’a pas été, chez vous, simple parole, mais puissance, action de l’Esprit Saint, pleine certitude : vous savez comment nous nous sommes comportés chez vous pour votre bien. La nouvelle de votre foi en Dieu s’est si bien répandue partout que nous n’avons pas besoin d’en parler. En célébrant le mémorial de notre salut, nous te supplions, Seigneur: que le sacrement de ton amour soit pour nous le signe de l’unité et le lien de la charité. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Les personnes qui ont le plus irrité Jésus et lui ont fait prononcer des mots très durs, étaient des pharisiens, ceux qu’il appelait hypocrites, ceux qui s’intéressaient davantage à l’aspect extérieur qu’à la valeur intérieure. Comme il est facile d’utiliser la religion et le discours religieux pour dominer et manipuler les autres ! Nous en sommes sans cesse témoins. Plusieurs l’ont fait et le font encore. Puissions-nous en ce jour, demander au Seigneur la grâce de soigner notre vie intérieure et notre foi afin que nous n’ayons pas honte de les montrer aux yeux des autres.

SAINT Augustine of Hippo
He was born in Thagaste in Africa of a Berber family. He had a brilliant legal and academic career. At length, through the prayers of his mother, and the teaching of St Ambrose of Milan, he was converted back to Christianity. He wrote an enormous number of works. He was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Boniface VIII in 1308.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

Renew in your Church, we pray, O Lord, the spirit with which you endowed your Bishop Saint Augustine that, filled with the same spirit, we may thirst for you, the sole fount of true wisdom, and seek you, the author of heavenly love. Meditation
The only people who probably succeeded in upsetting Jesus and making him speak very harsh words were those he considered hypocrites, those who were more interested in outward appearance than in inner value. How easy it is to use religion and religious discourse to dominate and manipulate others! We see this over and over again. Many have done it and many more still do so. May we ask the Lord this day for the grace to care for our inner life and faith so that we are not ashamed to show it to others.

Qui a été son conseiller ? Qui lui a donné en premier, et mériterait de recevoir en retour ? Car tout est de lui, et par lui, et pour lui. À lui la gloire pour l’éternité ! Amen.

Méditation
Jésus avait du pain sur la planche, pour ainsi dire, alors qu’il tentait de dissuader ses disciples du moindre espoir qu’il utiliserait sa popularité à des fins politiques, la discussion se concentre sur des personnages célèbres du passé, dont le retour était censé annoncer l’intervention imminente de Dieu pour inaugurer la fin des temps. Quand Pierre identifie Jésus comme étant le Messie, il est félicité de s’être laissé inspirer par le Père céleste. Jésus révèle que la communauté de foi qu’il est en train de fonder résistera aux puissances de l’enfer. Toutefois, cette communauté aura besoin de leadership ; c’est à Pierre et à ses successeurs qu’il confie l’autorité de lier et de délier.

Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. Meditation
Jesus had his work cut out for him, so to speak, as he tried to dissuade his followers from the slightest hope that he would use his popularity for political purposes. The discussion focuses on famous figures from the past, whose return was supposed to herald God’s imminent intervention to usher in the end times. When Peter is led to identify Jesus as the Messiah, he is praised for being inspired by the heavenly Father. Jesus reveals that the community of faith he is founding will resist the powers of hell. However, this community will need leadership; it is to Peter and his successors that he entrusts the authority to bind and loose.

SAINT Césaire d’Arles,
Evêque
En 503, un ancien moine de Lérins, devenu prêtre, puis abbé d’un monastère proche d’Arles, fut élu évêque de cette cité. Césaire (vers 470-543) a été appelé le ‘’précepteur de la Gaule’’. Grand admirateur de saint Augustin, il fut un prédicateur infatigable, à la parole simple, brève et concrète.

Dieu, notre bouclier, regarde: vois le visage de ton Christ. Un jour passé dans ta maison en vaut pour moi plus que mille.

1ère lecture : Rt 2, 1-3.8-11 ; 4, 13-17
Noémi avait un parent du côté de son mari Élimélek ; c’était un riche propriétaire du même clan ; il s’appelait Booz. Ruth la Moabite dit à Noémi : « Laisse-moi aller glaner dans les champs, derrière celui aux yeux de qui je trouverai grâce. » Elle lui répondit : « Va, ma fille. » Ruth partit donc glaner dans les champs derrière les moissonneurs. Elle se trouva par bonheur dans la parcelle d’un champ appartenant à Booz, du clan d’Élimélek. Booz dit à Ruth: « Tu m’entends bien, n’est-ce pas, ma fille ? Ne va pas glaner dans un autre champ. Ne t’éloigne pas de celui-ci, mais attache-toi aux pas de mes servantes. Regarde dans quel champ on moissonne, et suis-les. N’ai-je pas interdit aux serviteurs de te molester ? Si tu as soif, va boire aux cruches ce que les serviteurs auront puisé. » Alors Ruth se prosterna face contre terre et lui dit : « Pourquoi ai-je trouvé grâce à tes yeux, pourquoi t’intéresser à moi, moi qui suis une étrangère ? » Booz lui répondit : « On m’a dit et répété tout ce que tu as fait pour ta belle-mère après la mort de ton mari, comment tu as quitté ton père, ta mère et le pays de ta parenté, pour te rendre chez un peuple que tu n’avais jamais connu de ta vie. » Booz prit Ruth comme épouse, elle devint sa femme et il s’unit à elle. Le Seigneur lui accorda de concevoir, et elle enfanta un fils. Les femmes de Bethléem dirent à Noémi: « Béni soit le Seigneur qui aujourd’hui ne t’a pas laissée sans quelqu’un pour te racheter ! Que son nom soit célébré en Israël ! Cet enfant te fera revivre, il sera l’appui de ta vieillesse : il est né de ta belle-fille qui t’aime, et qui vaut mieux pour toi que sept fils. » Noémi prit l’enfant, le mit sur son sein, et se chargea de l’élever. Les voisines lui donnèrent son nom. Elles disaient : « Il est né un fils à Noémi. » Et elles le nommèrent Obed. Ce fut le père de Jessé, qui fut le père de David.

Pour vous, ne vous faites pas donner le titre de Rabbi, car vous n’avez qu’un seul maître pour vous enseigner, et vous êtes tous frères. Ne donnez à personne sur terre le nom de père, car vous n’avez qu’un seul Père, celui qui est aux cieux. Ne vous faites pas non plus donner le titre de maîtres, car vous n’avez qu’un seul maître, le Christ. Le plus grand parmi vous sera votre serviteur. Qui s’élèvera sera abaissé, qui s’abaissera sera élevé. »

Dans cet incident, Jésus exhorte la foule à faire ce qu’enseignent les Pharisiens, qui cependant ne pratiquent pas ce qu’ils prêchent. M’arrive-t-il parfois de rejeter le message avec le messager? Être chrétien ne devrait pas sembler une charge pénible à porter. Jésus a dit, « mon joug est facile à porter, et mon fardeau, léger. » (Mt 11, 30) – Il était conscient des limites des gens. Lorsque je porte un jugement sur ce que j’estime être les échecs d’une autre personne, est-ce que je fais par-là preuve de la même compassion que Jésus ?

Blessed Dominic Barberi
Dominic Barberi was born near Viterbo, Italy, in 1792 and joined the Passionist Order. He worked as a missionary in England. Blessed Dominic was noted for the personal warmth of his approach to non-Catholics and for his zeal in preaching; he drew crowds in spite of his strong Italian accent. Blessed Dominic died at Reading in 1849.

Meditation
In the incident which today’s Gospel reports, we cannot overlook the fact that Jesus exhorts the crowd to do what the Pharisees teach, though the latter do not practice what they preach. Do I sometimes reject the message with the messenger? Being a Christian shouldn’t seem like an onerous encumbrance to bear. Jesus said, “My yoke is easy to bear, and my burden is light.” (Mt 11:30) – He was aware of people’s limitations. When I am tempted to pass judgment on what I believe to be another person’s failures, am I showing the same compassion as Jesus?

En 503, un ancien moine de Lérins, devenu prêtre, puis abbé d’un monastère proche d’Arles, fut élu évêque de cette cité. Césaire (vers 470-543) a été appelé le ‘’précepteur de la Gaule’’. Grand admirateur de saint Augustin, il fut un prédicateur infatigable, à la parole simple, brève et concrète.

À l’époque où gouvernaient les Juges, il y eut une famine dans le pays. Un homme de Bethléem de Juda émigra avec sa femme et ses deux fils pour s’établir dans la région appelée Champs-de-Moab. Élimélek, le mari de Noémi, mourut, et Noémi resta seule avec ses deux fils, Mahlone et Kilyone. Ceux-ci épousèrent deux Moabites; l’une s’appelait Orpa (c’est-à-dire : Volte- face) et l’autre, Ruth (c’est-à-dire : Compagne). Ils demeurèrent là une dizaine d’années. Mahlone et Kilyone moururent à leur tour, et Noémi resta privée de ses deux fils et de son mari. Alors, avec ses belles- filles, elle se prépara à quitter les Champs-de-Moabet à retourner chez elle, car elle avait appris que le Seigneur avait visité son peuple et lui donnait du pain. En cours de route, Orpa embrassa sa belle-mère et la quitta, mais Ruth restait attachée à ses pas. Noémi lui dit : « Tu vois, ta belle- sœur est retournée vers son peuple et vers ses dieux. Retourne, toi aussi, comme ta belle-sœur. » Ruth lui répondit : « Ne me force pas à t’abandonner et à m’éloigner de toi, car où tu iras, j’irai; où tu t’arrêteras, je m’arrêterai; ton peuple sera mon peuple, et ton Dieu sera mon Dieu. » Noémi revint donc des Champs-de-Moab avec sa belle-fille, Ruth la Moabite. Elles arrivèrent à Bethléem au début de la moisson de l’orge.

Méditation :
Les deux commandements énoncés dans l’Évangile de ce jour sont non seulement similaires, mais ils sont complémentaires et inséparables. Autrement dit, il est impossible d’aimer Dieu et de ne pas aimer notre prochain, et vice versa. Jésus dit que si l’on aime vraiment Dieu et le prochain, le reste de la loi viendra de lui-même. Il peut même y avoir des moments où un tel amour dépasse et remplace les exigences de certaines lois. Aucun acte, d’amour ne peut être un péché.

SAINT Barthélemy, Apôtre
Dans la liste des Douze figurant dans les évangiles synoptiques, Barthélemy vient après Philippe. L’évangile de Jean ne donne pas cette liste, mais il transmet les interventions de certains Apôtres, ce qui permet d’entrevoir leur personnalité ; c’est le cas pour André, Philippe, Thomas et Jude.

En ce temps-là, Philippe trouve Nathanaël et lui dit : « Celui dont il est écrit dans la loi de Moïse et chez les Prophètes, nous l’avons trouvé: c’est Jésus fils de Joseph, de Nazareth. » Nathanaël répliqua : « De Nazareth peut-il sortir quelque chose de bon ? » Philippe répond : « Viens, et vois.» Lorsque Jésus voit Nathanaël venir à lui, il déclare à son sujet : « Voici vraiment un Israélite : il n’y a pas de ruse en lui.» Nathanaël lui demande : « D’où me connais-tu? » Jésus lui répond: « Avant que Philippe t’appelle, quand tu étais sous le figuier, je t’ai vu. » Nathanaël lui dit : « Rabbi, c’est toi le Fils de Dieu ! C’est toi le roi d’Israël ! » Jésus reprend : « Je te dis que je t’ai vu sous le figuier, et c’est pour cela que tu crois ! Tu verras des choses plus grandes encore. » Et il ajoute : « Amen, amen, je vous le dis : vous verrez le ciel ouvert, et les anges de Dieu monter et descendre au-dessus du Fils de l’homme. »

Méditation
Le pape François rêve de voir en chaque chrétien, une personne qui partage la bonne nouvelle de l’amour salvifique de Dieu pour toute l’humanité. Cela peut sembler une tâche ardue, mais Philippe illustre très simplement comment y procéder. Suite à sa rencontre avec Jésus, son cœur a été touché, alors il partage sa découverte avec son ami. Face à l’objection de Nathanaël, il ne discute pas, mais dit spontanément : « Viens, et vois». Seigneur, mets-en moi ce feu et ce désir de te partager avec les autres, accorde-moi de toujours essayer d’être une bonne nouvelle pour ceux que je rencontre.

He was born at Cana and brought by the Apostle Philip to meet Jesus. Nothing further is known for certain. Eusebius speaks of him in India, but the Roman Martyrology has him martyred in Armenia, skinned alive according to the Persian custom. He is a patron saint of the sick.

Meditation
Pope Francis dreams of seeing in every Christian a person who shares the Good News of God’s saving love for all humanity. This may seem like a daunting task, but Philip illustrates very simply how to do it. After his encounter with Jesus, his heart has been touched, so he shares his discovery with his friend. When faced with Nathanael’s objection, he does not argue, but spontaneously says, “Come and see.” Lord, put in me this fire and desire to share you with others, grant me to always try to be Good News for those I meet.
