SAINT Alphonse-Marie de Liguori, Evêque et Docteur de l’Église
D’abord brillant avocat napolitain, Alphonse (1696-1787), devenu prêtre à trente ans, se voue à la prédication parmi les pauvres et fonde la congrégation du Très Saint Rédempteur, destinée à évangéliser les campagnes. Nommé évêque de Sainte-Agathe-des-Goths dans la région de Naples, il doit abandonner la direction de sa congrégation.

Adorons Dieu dans sa sainte demeure. Il fait habiter les siens tous ensemble dans sa maison, c’est lui qui donne force et puissance à son peuple.
Prière d’ouverture
Tu protèges, Seigneur, ceux qui comptent sur toi, sans toi rien n’est fort et rien n’est saint. Multiplie pour nous tes gestes de miséricorde afin que, sous ta conduite, en faisant un bon usage des biens qui passent, nous puissions déjà nous attacher à ceux qui demeurent. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Ex 33, 7-11 ; 34, 5b-9.28
En ces jours-là, à chaque étape, pendant la marche au désert, Moïse prenait la Tente et la plantait hors du camp, à bonne distance. On l’appelait: tente de la Rencontre, et quiconque voulait consulter le Seigneur devait sortir hors du camp pour gagner la tente de la Rencontre. Quand Moïse sortait pour aller à la Tente, tout le peuple se levait. Chacun se tenait à l’entrée de sa tente et suivait Moïse du regard jusqu’à ce qu’il soit entré. Au moment où Moïse entrait dans la Tente, la colonne de nuée descendait, se tenait à l’entrée de la Tente, et Dieu parlait avec Moïse. Tout le peuple voyait la colonne de nuée qui se tenait à l’entrée de la Tente, tous se levaient et se prosternaient, chacun devant sa tente. Le Seigneur parlait avec Moïse face à face, comme on parle d’homme à homme. Puis Moïse retournait dans le camp, mais son auxiliaire, le jeune Josué, fils de Noun, ne quittait pas l’intérieur de la Tente. Le Seigneur proclama lui-même son nom qui est : LE SEIGNEUR. Il passa devant Moïse et proclama: « LE SEIGNEUR, LE SEIGNEUR, Dieu tendre et miséricordieux, lent à la colère, plein d’amour et de vérité, qui garde sa fidélité jusqu’à la millième génération, supporte faute, transgression et péché, mais ne laisse rien passer, car il punit la faute des pères sur les fils et les petits-fils, jusqu’à la troisième et la quatrième génération. » Aussitôt Moïse s’inclina jusqu’à terre et se prosterna. Il dit : « S’il est vrai, mon Seigneur, que j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, daigne marcher au milieu de nous. Oui, c’est un peuple à la nuque raide ; mais tu pardonneras nos fautes et nos péchés, et tu feras de nous ton héritage. » Moïse demeura sur le Sinaï avec le Seigneur quarante jours et quarante nuits ; il ne mangea pas de pain et ne but pas d’eau. Sur les tables de pierre, il écrivit les paroles de l’Alliance, les Dix Paroles.
Psaume : 102 (103), 6-7, 10-11, 12-13
R/ Le Seigneur fait œuvre de justice,
Le Seigneur fait œuvre de justice, il défend le droit des opprimés. Il révèle ses desseins à Moïse, enfants d’Israël ses hauts faits.
Le Seigneur est tendresse et pitié, lent à la colère et plein d’amour ; il n’est pas pour toujours en procès, ne maintient pas sans fin ses reproches.
Il n’agit pas envers nous selon nos fautes, ne nous rend pas selon nos offenses. Comme le ciel domine la terre, fort est son amour pour qui le craint.
Aussi loin qu’est l’Orient de l’Occident, il met loin de nous nos péchés ; comme la tendresse du père pour ses fils, la tendresse du Seigneur pour qui le craint !

Évangile : Mt 13, 36-43
En ce temps-là, laissant les foules, Jésus vint à la maison. Ses disciples s’approchèrent et lui dirent : «Explique-nous clairement la parabole de l’ivraie dans le champ. » Il leur répondit : « Celui qui sème le bon grain, c’est le Fils de l’homme ; le champ, c’est le monde ; le bon grain, ce sont les fils du Royaume ; l’ivraie, ce sont les fils du Mauvais. L’ennemi qui l’a semée, c’est le diable; la moisson, c’est la fin du monde ; les moissonneurs, ce sont les anges. De même que l’on enlève l’ivraie pour la jeter au feu, ainsi en sera-t-il à la fin du monde. Le Fils de l’homme enverra ses anges, et ils enlèveront de son Royaume toutes les causes de chute et ceux qui font le mal; ils les jetteront dans la fournaise : là, il y aura des pleurs et des grincements de dents. Alors les justes resplendiront comme le soleil dans le royaume de leur Père. Celui qui a des oreilles, qu’il entende ! »

Accepte, Seigneur, ces offrandes prélevées pour toi sur tes propres largesses. Que ces mystères très saints, où ta grâce opère avec puissance, sanctifient notre vie de tous les jours et nous conduisent aux joies éternelles. Par Jésus.

Méditation
L’explication que Jésus donne à la parabole de l’ivraie en ce jour, nous invite à travailler à gagner le Ciel sur la terre en fructifiant les dons et les qualités que Dieu nous a donnés et semés en nous. Face à l’existence du mal qui ravage nos quotidiens de chrétien, et hante parfois nos jours et nos nuits au point de nous désorienter et de nous décourager, nous sommes appelés à vivre l’ordinaire de ce qui ne semble avoir aucune transcendance, sans attendre des situations extraordinaires qui n’arriveront peut-être jamais. Nous devons le faire en pensant à l’éternité et en aidant les autres à en faire autant!

SAINT Alphonsus Liguori
He was a Neapolitan lawyer who became a priest. He preached in the rural districts around Naples. His bishop asked him to establish an order of missionaries to work in the countryside, and the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists) was formally established in 1749. Alphonsus lived an exceptionally holy life.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

O God, who constantly raise up in your Church new examples of virtue, grant that we may follow so closely in the footsteps of the Bishop Saint Alphonsus in his zeal for souls as to attain the same rewards that are his in heaven. First reading: Exodus 33:7-11,34:5-9,28
Moses used to take the Tent and pitch it outside the camp, at some distance from the camp. He called it the Tent of Meeting. Anyone who had to consult the Lord would go out to the Tent of Meeting, outside the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the Tent, all the people would rise. Every man would stand at the door of his tent and watch Moses until he reached the Tent; the pillar of cloud would come down and station itself at the entrance to the Tent, and the Lord would speak with Moses. When they saw the pillar of cloud stationed at the entrance to the Tent, all the people would rise and bow low, each at the door of his tent. The Lord would speak with Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would turn back to the camp, but the young man who was his servant, Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the Tent. The Lord does deeds of justice, gives judgement for all who are oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses and his deeds to Israel’s sons.
The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. His wrath will come to an end; he will not be angry for ever.
He does not treat us according to our sins nor repay us according to our faults. For as the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who fear him.
As far as the east is from the west so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his sons, the Lord has pity on those who fear him.

The field is the world; the good seed is the subjects of the kingdom; the darnel, the subjects of the evil one; the enemy who sowed them, the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; the reapers are the angels. Well then, just as the darnel is gathered up and burnt in the fire, so it will be at the end of time. Prayer over the Offerings
Be pleased, O Lord, to enkindle our hearts with the celestial fire of your Spirit, just as you granted that Saint Alphonsus should celebrate these mysteries and by them offer himself to you as a holy sacrifice. Through Christ our Lord.

O God, who gave us Saint Alphonsus to be a faithful steward and preacher of this great mystery, grant that your faithful may receive it often and, receiving it, praise you without end. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The explanation that Jesus gives to the parable of the tares on this day invites us to work towards gaining Heaven while on earth by bearing fruits from the gifts and qualities that God has sown in us. In the face of evil that ravages our daily lives as Christians, and which sometimes haunts our days and nights to the point of disorienting and discouraging us, we are called to lead ordinary lives that, though seemingly void of all transcendence, recognise and valorise God’s presence in ordinary events, without necessarily awaiting any extraordinary situations that may never occur. We must think of eternity and help others to do same!

SAINT IGNACE DE LOYOLA
Pretre
Ignace est un Basque et un militaire. Une blessure brise sa carrière de soldat mais il découvre la prière et, dans la prière, le Seigneur Jésus. De son expérience spirituelle à Manrèse, il sort transformé. Les Exercices spirituels, fruit de cette expérience lui permettront de transformer les autres en vue d’en faire des apôtres qui évangéliseront le monde pour la plus grande gloire de Dieu. Le groupe de ses premiers compagnons prononce ses vœux à Montmartre, en 1534 ; c’est le germe de la Compagnie de Jésus, pépinière de missionnaires et d’éducateurs qui sèmeront la foi dans le monde.

Au nom de Jésus, que tout être vivant tombe à genoux, au ciel, sur terre et dans l’abîme, et que toute langue proclame : « Jésus Christ est le Seigneur, » pour la gloire de Dieu le Père.

1ère lecture : Ex 32, 15-24.30-34
En ces jours-là, Moïse redescendit de la montagne. Il portait les deux tables du Témoignage ; ces tables étaient écrites sur les deux faces; elles étaient l’œuvre de Dieu, et l’écriture, c’était l’écriture de Dieu, gravée sur ces tables. Josué entendit le bruit et le tumulte du peuple et dit à Moïse : « Bruit de bataille dans le camp. » Moïse répliqua : « Ces bruits, ce ne sont pas des chants de victoire ni de défaite ; ce que j’entends, ce sont des cantiques qui se répondent. » Comme il approchait du camp, il aperçut le veau et les danses. Il s’enflamma de colère, il jeta les tables qu’il portait, et les brisa au bas de la montagne. Il se saisit du veau qu’ils avaient fait, le brûla, le réduisit en poussière, qu’il répandit à la surface de l’eau. Et cette eau, il la fit boire aux fils d’Israël. Moïse dit à Aaron : « Qu’est-ce que ce peuple t’avait donc fait, pour que tu l’aies entraîné dans un si grand péché ? » Aaron répondit : « Que mon seigneur ne s’enflamme pas de colère! Tu sais bien que ce peuple est porté au mal ! C’est eux qui m’ont dit : “Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous. Car ce Moïse, l’homme qui nous a fait monter du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons pas ce qui lui est arrivé.” Je leur ai dit: “Ceux d’entre vous qui ont de l’or, qu’ils s’en dépouillent.” Ils me l’ont donné, je l’ai jeté au feu, et il en est sorti ce veau. » Le lendemain, Moïse dit au peuple : « Vous avez commis un grand péché. Maintenant, je vais monter vers le Seigneur. Peut-être obtiendrai-je la rémission de votre péché. » Moïse retourna vers le Seigneur et lui dit : « Hélas ! Ce peuple a commis un grand péché: ils se sont fait des dieux en or. Ah, si tu voulais enlever leur péché ! Ou alors, efface-moi de ton livre, celui que tu as écrit. » Le Seigneur répondit à Moïse : « Celui que j’effacerai de mon livre, c’est celui qui a péché contre moi. Va donc, conduis le peuple vers le lieu que je t’ai indiqué, et mon ange ira devant toi. Le jour où j’interviendrai, je les punirai de leur péché. »

À l’Horeb ils fabriquent un veau, ils adorent un objet en métal : ils échangeaient ce qui était leur gloire pour l’image d’un taureau, d’un ruminant.
Ils oubliaient le Dieu qui les sauvait, qui a fait des prodiges en Égypte, des miracles au pays de Cham, des actions terrifiantes sur la mer Rouge.
Dieu a décidé de les détruire. C’est alors que Moïse, son élu, surgit sur la brèche, devant lui, pour empêcher que sa fureur les extermine.

Le Père a voulu nous engendrer par sa parole de vérité, pour faire de nous comme les prémices de ses créatures. Alléluia. (Jc 1, 18)
Évangile : Mt 13, 31-35
En ce temps-là, Jésus proposa aux foules une autre parabole : « Le royaume des Cieux est comparable à une graine de moutarde qu’un homme a prise et qu’il a semée dans son champ. C’est la plus petite de toutes les semences, mais, quand elle a poussé, elle dépasse les autres plantes potagères et devient un arbre, si bien que les oiseaux du ciel viennent et font leurs nids dans ses branches.» Il leur dit une autre parabole : « Le royaume des Cieux est comparable au levain qu’une femme a pris et qu’elle a enfoui dans trois mesures de farine, jusqu’à ce que toute la pâte ait levé.» Tout cela, Jésus le dit aux foules en paraboles, et il ne leur disait rien sans parabole, accomplissant ainsi la parole du prophète : J’ouvrirai la bouche pour des paraboles, je publierai ce qui fut caché depuis la fondation du monde.

Que l’offrande présentée en la fête de saint Ignace te soit agréable, Seigneur: et que ces mystères, source de toute sainteté, nous sanctifient nous aussi dans la vérité. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Frères et sœurs, le royaume des cieux dont nous représentons les graines en tant que chrétiens, est appelé à grandir et devenir une demeure accueillant la création tout entière, comme l’arbre le fait pour les oiseaux. Ce chemin de croissance est parsemé de réussites, mais aussi d’erreurs, que nous ne devons pas hésiter à confesser pour nous réconcilier avec celui qui nous aime d’un amour éternel et inébranlable. Seigneur aide nous à faire grandir ton royaume et à nous convertir quand nous nous sommes égarés.

SAINT IGNATIUS LOYOLA
Ignatius was born in Loyola in the Spanish Basque country. Initially a soldier, he was wounded in the battle of Pamplona. With his companions, in 1540, they formed the Society of Jesus. Ignatius wrote the Spiritual Exercises, a systematic step-by-step retreat that can be followed by anyone – and has been followed by many, not all of them Catholics, ever since.

At the name of Jesus, every knee should bend of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Moses made his way back down the mountain with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, tablets inscribed on both sides, inscribed on the front and on the back. These tablets were the work of God, and the writing on them was God’s writing engraved on the tablets. Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting. “There is the sound of battle in the camp”, he told Moses. Moses answered him: “No song of victory is this sound, no wailing for defeat this sound; it is the sound of chanting that I hear.” As he approached the camp and saw the calf and the groups dancing, Moses’ anger blazed. He threw down the tablets he was holding and broke them at the foot of the mountain. He seized the calf they had made and burned it, grinding it into powder which he scattered on the water; and he made the sons of Israel drink it. To Aaron Moses said, “What has this people done to you, for you to bring such a great sin on them?” “Let not my lord’s anger blaze like this”, Aaron answered. “You know yourself how prone this people is to evil. They said to me, “Make us a god to go at our head; this Moses, the man who brought us up from Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” So I said to them, “Who has gold?” and they took it off and brought it to me. I threw it into the fire and out came this calf.” On the following day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a grave sin. But now I shall go up to the Lord: perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” And Moses returned to the Lord. “I am grieved,” he cried. “This people has committed a grave sin, making themselves a god of gold. And yet, if it pleased you to forgive this sin of theirs…! But if not, then blot me out from the book that you have written.” The Lord answered Moses, “It is the man who has sinned against me that I shall blot out from my book. Go now, lead the people to the place of which I told you. My angel shall go before you but, on the day of my visitation, I shall punish them for their sin.”

R/ O give thanks to the Lord for he is good.
They fashioned a calf at Horeb and worshipped an image of metal, exchanging the God who was their glory for the image of a bull that eats grass.
They forgot the God who was their saviour, who had done such great things in Egypt, such portents in the land of Ham, such marvels at the Red Sea.
For this he said he would destroy them, but Moses, the man he had chosen, stood in the breach before him, to turn back his anger from destruction.

Gospel: Matthew 13:31-35
Jesus put a parable before the crowds: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the biggest shrub of all and becomes a tree so that the birds of the air come and shelter in its branches.” He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour till it was leavened all through.” In all this Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables; indeed, he would never speak to them except in parables. This was to fulfil the prophecy: I will speak to you in parables and expound things hidden since the foundation of the world.

May these offerings we make to you as we celebrate Saint Ignatius be pleasing, Lord God, and grant that the sacred mysteries, which you have made the fount of all holiness, may sanctify us, too, in the truth. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
Brothers and sisters, the kingdom of heaven, whose seeds we represent as Christians, is called to grow and become a dwelling place for the whole of creation, as the tree does for the birds. This path of growth is strewn with successes, but also with mistakes, which we must not hesitate to confess in order to be reconciled with the one who loves us with an eternal and unshakeable love. Lord, help us to grow in your kingdom and to be converted when we have gone astray.

R/ De quel amour j’aime ta loi, Seigneur !
Mon partage, Seigneur, je l’ai dit, c’est d’observer tes paroles. Mon bonheur, c’est la loi de ta bouche, plus qu’un monceau d’or ou d’argent.
Que j’aie pour consolation ton amour selon tes promesses à ton serviteur ! Que vienne à moi ta tendresse, et je vivrai : ta loi fait mon plaisir.
Aussi j’aime tes volontés, plus que l’or le plus précieux. Je me règle sur chacun de tes préceptes, je hais tout chemin de mensonge.
Quelle merveille, tes exigences, aussi mon âme les garde ! Déchiffrer ta parole illumine et les simples comprennent.

Frères, nous le savons, quand les hommes aiment Dieu, lui-même fait tout contribuer à leur bien, puisqu’ils sont appelés selon le dessein de son amour. Ceux que, d’avance, il connaissait, il les a aussi destinés d’avance à être configurés à l’image de son Fils, pour que ce Fils soit le premier-né d’une multitude de frères. Ceux qu’il avait destinés d’avance, il les a aussi appelés ; ceux qu’il a appelés, il en a fait des justes ; et ceux qu’il a rendus justes, il leur a donné sa gloire.

Ayant trouvé une perle de grande valeur, il va vendre tout ce qu’il possède, et il achète la perle. Le royaume des Cieux est encore comparable à un filet que l’on jette dans la mer, et qui ramène toutes sortes de poissons. Quand il est plein, on le tire sur le rivage, on s’assied, on ramasse dans des paniers ce qui est bon, et on rejette ce qui ne vaut rien. Frères et sœurs, comme le disait sainte Thérèse de Jésus, appelée aussi Thérèse d’Avila, « Dieu seul suffit. » en effet, qui a trouvé le Seigneur a tout. C’est pourquoi on est prêt à tout abandonner pour le trouver, ou alors à tout vendre pour Lui. Le Seigneur est le seul bien pour lequel nous devons être prêts à tout quitter. Dès lors, nous sommes bien à plaindre si nous avons préféré à cette place incomparable l’argent, les richesses, les honneurs, le pouvoir, etc. en effet, tout cela ne vaut rien et nous fera être rejetés au jour du jugement. Seigneur, donnes nous de te chercher par-dessus toutes ses choses éphémères.

Meditation
Jesus brings to our knowledge the beauty of the kingdom of heaven. He compares it first with a treasure, then fine pearls and finally a dragnet that separates the good from the bad. The beauty of the kingdom of heaven gives one the desire to belong to it. These parables teach us that we should use any opportunity to inherit the kingdom of heaven. The one who sees what can lead him/her to heaven should hold it with greatness and sacrifice everything in other to have it. Let us be able to sell our pride, pleasures, wickedness and worldly possessions that block us from inheriting the kingdom of heaven.

SAINTES Marthe, MARIE ET
SAINT LAZARE.
Marthe vivait à Béthanie, avec son frère Lazare et sa sœur Marie. Jésus était leur ami, et Marthe l’accueillait avec d’autant plus d’empressement qu’elle reconnaissait en lui le Messie envoyé par Dieu à son peuple. A cette foi de Marthe une dimension manquait cependant. Certes la vraie foi est active, et le croyant doit accomplir la parole de Dieu en servant ses frères avec amour ; mais Dieu attend aussi du croyant qu’il écoute sa Parole pour mieux s’ouvrir à l’amour qu’elle lui révèle.

Jésus entra dans un village. Une femme appelée Marthe le requit dans sa maison.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, puisque ton Fils acceptait l’hospitalité que sainte Marthe lui offrait dans sa maison, apprends-nous, à son exemple, à servir le Christ en chacun de nos frères pour que tu nous reçoives dans la demeure des cieux. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Exode 24, 3-8
En ces jours-là, descendant du Sinaï, Moïse vint rapporter au peuple toutes les paroles du Seigneur et toutes ses ordonnances. Tout le peuple répondit d’une seule voix: « Toutes ces paroles que le Seigneur a dites, nous les mettrons en pratique. » Moïse écrivit toutes les paroles du Seigneur. Il se leva de bon matin et il bâtit un autel au pied de la montagne, et il dressa douze pierres pour les douze tribus d’Israël. Puis il chargea quelques jeunes garçons parmi les fils d’Israël d’offrir des holocaustes, et d’immoler au Seigneur des taureaux en sacrifice de paix. Moïse prit la moitié du sang et le mit dans des coupes ; puis il aspergea l’autel avec le reste du sang. Il prit le livre de l’Alliance et en fit la lecture au peuple. Celui-ci répondit: « Tout ce que le Seigneur a dit, nous le mettrons en pratique, nous y obéirons. » Moïse prit le sang, en aspergea le peuple, et dit: « Voici le sang de l’Alliance que, sur la base de toutes ces paroles, le Seigneur a conclu avec vous. »

Le Dieu des dieux, le Seigneur, parle et convoque la terre du soleil levant jusqu’au soleil couchant. De Sion, belle entre toutes, Dieu resplendit.

Or, pendant que les gens dormaient, son ennemi survint ; il sema de l’ivraie au milieu du blé et s’en alla. Quand la tige poussa et produisit l’épi, alors l’ivraie apparut aussi. Les serviteurs du maître vinrent lui dire : “Seigneur, n’est-ce pas du bon grain que tu as semé dans ton champ? D’où vient donc qu’il y a de l’ivraie ? ” Il leur dit: “C’est un ennemi qui a fait cela.” Les serviteurs lui disent: “ Veux-tu donc que nous allions l’enlever ? ” Il répond : “ Non, en enlevant l’ivraie, vous risquez d’arracher le blé en même temps. Frères et sœurs, le texte de la première lecture nous parle de l’engagement du peuple d’Israël à suivre les préceptes du Seigneur. Nous aussi, nous nous sommes engagés le jour de notre baptême à suivre fermement le Seigneur. Interrogeons-nous à présent pour savoir ce que nous avons fait des engagements de notre baptême. Les vivons-nous ? Ou alors sommes-nous restés sur le bord du chemin paralysés par la mauvaise herbe ? Seigneur de tendresse et d’amour, toi qui patiente malgré nos multitudes trahisons, relève nous et rend-nous digne de vivre en ta présence pour l’éternité le jour de ton avènement.

SAINTS MARTHA, MARY AND LAZARUS
Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus Martha was the sister of Mary of Bethany and Lazarus. In the West, her feast day comes a week after that of St Mary Magdalene because of the old and probably erroneous tradition that Mary Magdalene was the same person as Martha’s sister. Modern scholarship having made matters clearer, Martha, Mary and Lazarus have since 2021 been celebrated together on this day, which was formerly assigned to Martha alone.

Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to sympathise with them over their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus had come she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house. Martha said to Jesus, “If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.” “Your brother”, said Jesus, to her “will rise again.” Martha said, “I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said: “I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” “Yes, Lord,” she said, “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.”

Meditation
The first reading tells us about the commitment of the people of Israel to follow the Lord’s precepts. We too made a commitment on the day of our baptism to follow the Lord firmly. Let us now ask ourselves what we have done with our baptismal commitments. Are we living them? Or have we stood by the side of the road, paralysed by the weeds? Lord of tenderness and love, you who are patient in spite of our many betrayals, raise us up and make us worthy to live in your presence for eternity on the day of your coming.

1ère lecture : Exode 20, 1-17

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Écoutez ce que veut dire la parabole du semeur. Quand quelqu’un entend la parole du Royaume sans la comprendre, le Mauvais survient et s’empare de ce qui est semé dans son cœur : celui-là, c’est le terrain ensemencé au bord du chemin. Celui qui a reçu la semence sur un sol pierreux, c’est celui qui entend la Parole et la reçoit aussitôt avec joie; mais il n’a pas de racines en lui, il est l’homme d’un moment : quand vient la détresse ou la persécution à cause de la Parole, il trébuche aussitôt. Celui qui a reçu la semence dans les ronces, c’est celui qui entend la Parole ; mais le souci du monde et la séduction de la richesse étouffent la Parole, qui ne donne pas de fruit. Celui qui a reçu la semence dans la bonne terre, c’est celui qui entend la Parole et la comprend : il porte du fruit à raison de cent, ou soixante, ou trente pour un. »

Dans l’unique et parfait sacrifice de la croix, tu as porté à leur achèvement, Seigneur, les sacrifices de l’ancienne loi. Reçois cette offrande des mains de tes fidèles et daigne la sanctifier comme tu as béni les présents d’Abel, que les dons offerts par chacun pour te glorifier servent au salut de tous. Par Jésus.

Le Seigneur a mis le comble à son amour en nous laissant le mémorial de ses merveilles, à ses amis, il a donné le signe d’un repas qui leur rappelle à jamais son alliance.

Méditation
Frères et sœurs, en ce jour, le seigneur nous donne ses commandements. Il nous les donnes pour que nous menions une vie harmonieuse avec lui, ainsi qu’avec notre prochain. Toutefois, seule une bonne compréhension de ces commandements nous aidera à porter les fruits que seuls ceux qui vivent la parole peuvent porter. L’arrivé à ce stade est parsemée par de nombreuses luttes. Luttes contre le démon, contre les soucis du monde et contre l’enthousiasme d’un instant. Seigneur ouvre-nous à la compréhension et au vécu de ta parole.

Victor, an African by birth, was elected pope in 189. During his pontificate, which lasted until 198, he settled the controversy over the date of Easter. After much consultation and discussion, the decision was taken to celebrate it on Sunday throughout the Church. He was the first pope from Africa.

R/ Lord, you have the message of eternal life.
The law of the Lord is perfect, it revives the soul. The rule of the Lord is to be trusted, it gives wisdom to the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right, they gladden the heart. The command of the Lord is clear, it gives light to the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is holy, abiding for ever. The decrees of the Lord are truth and all of them just.
They are more to be desired than gold, than the purest of gold and sweeter are they than honey, than honey from the comb.

Gospel: Matthew 13:18-23
Jesus said to his disciples: “You are to hear the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom without understanding, the evil one comes and carries off what was sown in his heart: this is the man who received the seed on the edge of the path. The one who received it on patches of rock is the man who hears the word and welcomes it at once with joy. But he has no root in him, he does not last; let some trial come, or some persecution on account of the word, and he falls away at once. The one who received the seed in thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this world and the lure of riches choke the word and so he produces nothing. And the one who received the seed in rich soil is the man who hears the word and understands it; he is the one who yields a harvest and produces now a hundredfold, now sixty, now thirty.”
Prayer over the Offerings
O God, who in the one perfect sacrifice brought to completion varied offerings of the law, accept, we pray, this sacrifice from your faithful servants and make it holy, as you blessed the gifts of Abel, so that what each has offered to the honour of your majesty may benefit the salvation of all. Through Christ our Lord.

The Lord, the gracious, the merciful, has made a memorial of his wonders; he gives food to those who fear him.
Prayer after Communion
Graciously be present to your people, we pray, O Lord, and lead those you have imbued with heavenly mysteries to pass from former ways to newness of life. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Brothers and sisters, on this day the Lord gives us his commandments. He gives them to us so that we may live a harmonious life with him and with our neighbour, not to lay a burden upon us. However, only a proper understanding of these commandments will help us to bear the fruit that only those who live by the word can bear. Getting to this point entails struggling with many obstacles; struggles against the devil, against the cares of the world and against the enthusiasm of the moment. Lord, open us to the understanding and living of your word.
