St Catherine was very outspoken at the time of the persecutions of Christians. She even protested openly to the emperor Maxentius who had her arrested, tortured on the wheel and decapitated in 305. St Catherine’s courage is a great challenge to all African Christians in their struggle for justice and peace.

Stir up the will of your faithful, we pray, O Lord, that, striving more eagerly to bring your divine work to fruitful completion, they may receive in greater measure the healing remedies your kindness bestows. First reading : Daniel 2:31-45
Daniel said to Nebuchadnezzar, ‘You have had a vision, O king; this is what you saw: a statue, a great statue of extreme brightness, stood before you, terrible to see. The head of this statue was of fine gold, its chest and arms were of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, its legs of iron, its feet part iron, part earthenware. While you were gazing, a stone broke away, untouched by any hand, and struck the statue, struck its feet of iron and earthenware and shattered them. And then, iron and earthenware, bronze, silver, gold all broke into small pieces as fine as chaff on the threshing-floor in summer. The wind blew them away, leaving not a trace behind. And the stone that had struck the statue grew into a great mountain, filling the whole earth. This was the dream; now we will explain to the king what it means. ‘You, O king, king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given sovereignty, power, strength and glory – the sons of men, the beasts of the field, the birds of heaven, wherever they live, he has entrusted to your rule, making you king of them all – you are the golden head. And after you another kingdom will rise, not so great as you, and then a third, of bronze, which will rule the whole world. There will be a fourth kingdom, hard as iron, as iron that shatters and crushes all. Like iron that breaks everything to pieces, it will crush and break all the earlier kingdoms. The feet you saw, part earthenware, part iron, are a kingdom which will be split in two, but which will retain something of the strength of iron, just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together. The feet were part iron, part earthenware: the kingdom will be partly strong and partly weak. And just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together, so the two will be mixed together in the seed of man; but they will not hold together any more than iron will blend with earthenware. In the time of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, and this kingdom will not pass into the hands of another race: it will shatter and absorb all the previous kingdoms, and itself last for ever – just as you saw the stone untouched by hand break from the mountain and shatter iron, bronze, earthenware, silver and gold. The great God has shown the king what is to take place. The dream is true, the interpretation exact.’

When some were talking about the Temple, remarking how it was adorned with fine stonework and votive offerings, Jesus said, ‘All these things you are staring at now – the time will come when not a single stone will be left on another: everything will be destroyed.’ And they put to him this question: ‘Master,’ they said ‘when will this happen, then, and what sign will there be that this is about to take place?’ ‘Take care not to be deceived,’ he said ‘because many will come using my name and saying, “I am he” and, “The time is near at hand.” Refuse to join them. And when you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened, for this is something that must happen but the end is not so soon.’ Then he said to them, ‘Nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes and plagues and famines here and there; there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.’

Meditation
Jesus’ warnings about the end times are not intended to instill fear in us but rather to prepare us for them. His desire is for us to be ready for whatever may come. Rather than a source of fear, the end times signify a period of new beginnings. As the old world passes away, a new world emerges, one charactrised by peace, justice, and love. However, to partake in this new world, we must be ready. This readiness involves cleansing ourselves of sins and turning towards God. Living holy and righteous lives becomes integral to this readiness. To prepare for the end times, consistent prayer, regular Bible reading, attendance at Mass, frequent confession of sins, and the pursuit of a holy and righteous life, are crucial. Engaging in these practices ensures our preparedness for the transformative period ahead. Through these actions, we will be ready to enter the new world that God is preparing for us.

1ère lecture : Daniel 2, 31-45
En ces jours-là, Daniel dit à Nabucodonosor : « Ô roi, voici ta vision: une énorme statue se dressait devant toi, une grande statue, extrêmement brillante et d’un aspect terrifiant. Elle avait la tête en or fin ; la poitrine et les bras, en argent; le ventre et les cuisses, en bronze ; ses jambes étaient en fer, et ses pieds, en partie de fer, en partie d’argile. Tu étais en train de regarder : soudain une pierre se détacha d’une montagne, sans qu’on y ait touché; elle vint frapper les pieds de fer et d’argile de la statue et les pulvérisa. Alors, furent pulvérisés tout ensemble le fer et l’argile, le bronze, l’argent et l’or ; ils devinrent comme la paille qui s’envole en été au moment du battage : ils furent emportés par le vent sans laisser de traces. Quant à la pierre qui avait frappé la statue elle devint un énorme rocher qui remplit toute la terre. Voici le songe ; et maintenant, en présence du roi, nous allons en donner l’interprétation. C’est à toi, le roi des rois, que le Dieu du ciel a donné royauté, puissance, force et gloire. C’est à toi qu’il a remis les enfants des hommes, les bêtes des champs et les oiseaux du ciel, quelle que soit leur demeure ; c’est toi qu’il a rendu maître de toute chose : la tête d’or, c’est toi. Après toi s’élèvera un autre royaume, inférieur au tien, ensuite un troisième royaume, un royaume de bronze qui dominera la terre entière. Il y aura encore un quatrième royaume, dur comme le fer. De même que le fer brise et écrase tout, de même, il pulvérisera et brisera tous les royaumes. Tu as vu les pieds qui étaient en partie d’argile et en partie de fer : en effet, ce royaume sera divisé ; il aura en lui la force du fer, comme tu as vu du fer mêlé à l’argile. Ces pieds en partie de fer et en partie d’argile signifient que le royaume sera en partie fort et en partie faible. Tu as vu le fer associé à l’argile parce que les royaumes s’uniront par des mariages ; mais ils ne tiendront pas ensemble, de même que le fer n’adhère pas à l’argile. Or, au temps de ces rois, le Dieu du ciel suscitera un royaume qui ne sera jamais détruit et dont la royauté ne passera pas à un autre peuple. Ce dernier royaume pulvérisera et anéantira tous les autres, mais lui-même subsistera à jamais. C’est ainsi que tu as vu une pierre se détacher de la montagne sans qu’on y ait touché, et pulvériser le fer, le bronze, l’argile, l’argent et l’or. Le grand Dieu a fait connaître au roi ce qui doit ensuite advenir. Le songe disait vrai, l’interprétation est digne de foi. »

En ce temps-là, comme certains parlaient du Temple, des belles pierres et des ex-voto qui le décoraient, Jésus leur déclara : « Ce que vous contemplez, des jours viendront où il n’en restera pas pierre sur pierre : tout sera détruit. » Ils lui demandèrent : « Maître, quand cela arrivera-t-il ? Et quel sera le signe que cela est sur le point d’arriver ? » Jésus répondit : « Prenez garde de ne pas vous laisser égarer, car beaucoup viendront sous mon nom, et diront : “C’est moi”, ou encore : “Le moment est tout proche. Ne marchez pas derrière eux! Quand vous entendrez parler de guerres et de désordres, ne soyez pas terrifiés : il faut que cela arrive d’abord, mais ce ne sera pas aussitôt la fin. » Alors Jésus ajouta : « On se dressera nation contre nation, royaume contre royaume. Il y aura de grands tremblements de terre et, en divers lieux, des famines et des épidémies ; des phénomènes effrayants surviendront, et de grands signes venus du ciel. »

Méditation :
Jésus prophétise sur les événements à venir, y compris les troubles et les catastrophes. Il nous rappelle que le monde peut être rempli de tumulte et d’incertitude. Les bouleversements peuvent sembler effrayants, mais Il nous encourage à ne pas être troublés. Méditons sur notre réponse à l’incertitude de la vie. Au milieu des tempêtes, gardons notre foi enracinée dans l’espérance et la confiance en Dieu. En nous préparant spirituellement et en nous appuyant sur la foi, nous pouvons trouver la paix intérieure même lorsque le monde extérieur est en tumulte. Que cette méditation nous rappelle que, malgré les défis, la grâce de Dieu est notre ancre solide.

Andrew Dung Lac was born in Vietnam in 1785. He became a Catholic priest. He was beheaded on December 21, 1839 in Hanoi, Vietnam, for the offense of being a priest. Many martyrs died at the hands of religious persecutors following Andrew’s death. We remember them all today.

O God, source and origin of all fatherhood, who kept the Martyrs Saint Andrew Dũng-Lac and his companions faithful to the Cross of your Son, even to the shedding of their blood, grant, through their intercession, that, spreading your love among our brothers and sisters, we may be your children both in name and in truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Daniel 1:1-6,8-20
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched on Jerusalem and besieged it. The Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hands, with some of the furnishings of the Temple of God. He took them away to the land of Shinar, and stored the sacred vessels in the treasury of his own gods. The king ordered Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to select from the Israelites a certain number of boys of either royal or noble descent; they had to be without any physical defect, of good appearance, trained in every kind of wisdom, well-informed, quick at learning, suitable for service in the palace of the king. Ashpenaz himself was to teach them the language and literature of the Chaldaeans. The king assigned them a daily allowance of food and wine from his own royal table. They were to receive an education lasting for three years, after which they were expected to be fit for the king’s society. Among them were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, who were Judaeans. Daniel, who was most anxious not to defile himself with the food and wine from the royal table, begged the chief eunuch to spare him this defilement; and by the grace of God Daniel met goodwill and sympathy on the part of the chief eunuch. But he warned Daniel, ‘I am afraid of my lord the king: he has assigned you food and drink, and if he sees you looking thinner in the face than the other boys of your age, my head will be in danger with the king because of you.’ At this Daniel turned to the guard whom the chief eunuch had assigned to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. He said, ‘Please allow your servants a ten days’ trial, during which we are given only vegetables to eat and water to drink. You can then compare our looks with those of the boys who eat the king’s food; go by what you see, and treat your servants accordingly.’ The man agreed to do what they asked and put them on ten days’ trial. When the ten days were over they looked and were in better health than any of the boys who had eaten their allowance from the royal table; so the guard withdrew their allowance of food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them vegetables. And God favoured these four boys with knowledge and intelligence in everything connected with literature, and in wisdom; while Daniel had the gift of interpreting every kind of vision and dream. When the period stipulated by the king for the boys’ training was over, the chief eunuch presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. The king conversed with them, and among all the boys found none to equal Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. So they became members of the king’s court, and on whatever point of wisdom or information he might question them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.

Renewed by the one Bread as we commemorate the holy Martyrs, we humbly beseech you, O Lord, that, abiding as one in your love, we may merit by endurance an eternal prize. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The widow in today’s Gospel passage serves as a good example of generosity, offering everything she has despite its minimal quantity. Fearlessly, she gives her all to God, exemplifying a spirit of selflessnes. This portrayal urges us to embrace generosity in various aspects of our lives by sharing our time, talents, and resources with others. The call to be generous extends beyond individual acts of kindness. It encompasses freely giving to those in need without expecting anything in return. Additionally, contributing generously to the Church supports her mission of evangelisation and service. Generosity becomes a visible sign of our love for God and our neighbour. When we are generous, we show our trust in God’s providence and our willingness to share our blessings with others.

Seigneur Dieu, source et origine de toute paternité, tu as donné aux saint martyrs André et ses compagnons la grâce d’être fidèles à la croix de ton Fils jusqu’à l’effusion de leur sang ; accorde-nous, par leur intercession, de propager ton amour parmi nos frères, afin de pouvoir être appelés fils de Dieu et de l’être vraiment. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Daniel 1, 1-6.8-20
La troisième année du règne de Joakim, roi de Juda, Nabucodonosor, roi de Babylone, arriva devant Jérusalem et l’assiégea. Le Seigneur livra entre ses mains Joakim, roi de Juda, ainsi qu’une partie des objets de la maison de Dieu. Il les emporta au pays de Babylone, et les déposa dans le trésor de ses dieux. Le roi ordonna à Ashpénaz, chef de ses eunuques de faire venir quelques jeunes Israélites de race royale ou de famille noble. Ils devaient être sans défaut corporel, de belle figure, exercés à la sagesse, instruits et intelligents, pleins de vigueur, pour se tenir à la cour du roi et apprendre l’écriture et la langue des Chaldéens. Le roi leur assignait pour chaque jour une portion des mets royaux et du vin de sa table. Ils devaient être formés pendant trois ans, et ensuite ils entreraient au service du roi. Parmi eux se trouvaient Daniel, Ananias, Misaël et Azarias,qui étaient de la tribu de Juda. Daniel eut à cœur de ne pas se souiller avec les mets du roi et le vin de sa table, il supplia le chef des eunuques de lui épargner cette souillure. Dieu permit à Daniel de trouver auprès de celui-ci faveur et bienveillance. Mais il répondit à Daniel: « J’ai peur de mon Seigneur le roi, qui a fixé votre nourriture et votre boisson; s’il vous voit le visage plus défait qu’aux jeunes gens de votre âge, c’est moi qui, à cause de vous, risquerai ma tête devant le roi. » Or, le chef des eunuques avait confié Daniel, Ananias, Azarias et Misaël à un intendant. Daniel lui dit : « Fais donc pendant dix jours un essai avec tes serviteurs : qu’on nous donne des légumes à manger et de l’eau à boire. Tu pourras comparer notre mine avec celle des jeunes gens qui mangent les mets du roi et tu agiras avec tes serviteurs suivant ce que tu auras constaté. » L’intendant consentit à leur demande et les mit à l’essai pendant dix jours. Au bout de dix jours, ils avaient plus belle mine et meilleure santé que tous les jeunes gens qui mangeaient des mets du roi. L’intendant supprima définitivement leurs mets et leur ration de vin et leur fit donner des légumes. À ces quatre jeunes gens, Dieu accorda science et habileté en matière d’écriture et de sagesse. Daniel, en outre, savait interpréter les visions et les songes. Au terme fixé par le roi Nabucodonosor pour qu’on lui amenât tous les jeunes gens, le chef des eunuques les conduisit devant lui. Le roi s’entretint avec eux et pas un seul n’était comparable à Daniel, Ananias, Misaël et Azarias. Ils entrèrent donc au service du roi. Sur toutes les questions demandant sagesse et intelligence que le roi leur posait il les trouvait dix fois supérieurs à tous les magiciens et mages de tout son royaume.

En ce temps-là, comme Jésus enseignait dans le Temple, levant les yeux, il vit les gens riches qui mettaient leurs offrandes dans le Trésor. Il vit aussi une veuve misérable y mettre deux petites pièces de monnaie. Alors il déclara : « En vérité, je vous le dis : cette pauvre veuve a mis plus que tous les autres. Car tous ceux-là, pour faire leur offrande ont pris sur leur superflu mais elle, elle a pris sur son indigence : elle a mis tout ce qu’elle avait pour vivre. »

Reçois, Père très saint, les offrandes que nous te présentons en célébrant les saints martyrs du Vietnam, pour qu’au milieu des difficultés de notre vie nous puissions être trouvés toujours fidèles et nous offrir à toi en sacrifice qui te plaise. Par Jésus.

Heureux ceux qui sont persécutés pour la justice, car le Royaume des cieux est à eux.
Prière après la communion
Nourris et fortifiés par un même pain en la fête de tes saints martyrs André et ses compagnons, nous te supplions, Seigneur : garde-nous unis dans ton amour, afin que nous obtenions la récompense éternelle, promise à ceux qui souffrent pour toi. Par Jésus.
Méditation :
Jésus observe une veuve qui donne deux petites pièces de monnaie dans le trésor du temple. La générosité de la veuve est un exemple d’amour désintéressé. Elle donne tout ce qu’elle a, même si cela semble insignifiant. Méditons sur la valeur de notre générosité. Il ne s’agit pas de la quantité, mais de l’intention du cœur. Dieu voit nos offrandes avec amour et reconnaissance. La veuve nous enseigne que chaque acte de générosité compte aux yeux de Dieu. Sachons donner avec un cœur ouvert, sachant que notre petite contribution peut faire une grande différence pour ceux dans le besoin et plaire à Dieu.

Dieu éternel, tu as voulu fonder toutes choses en ton Fils bien-aimé, le Roi de l’univers; Fais que toute la création, libérée de la servitude, reconnaisse ta puissance et te glorifie sans fin. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : 2 Samuel 5, 1-3
En ces jours-là, toutes les tribus d’Israël vinrent trouver David à Hébron et lui dirent : « Vois ! Nous sommes de tes os et de ta chair. Dans le passé déjà, quand Saül était notre roi, c’est toi qui menais Israël en campagne et le ramenais, et le Seigneur t’a dit: ‘Tu seras le berger d’Israël mon peuple, tu seras le chef d’Israël.’» Ainsi, tous les anciens d’Israël vinrent trouver le roi à Hébron. Le roi David fit alliance avec eux, à Hébron, devant le Seigneur. Ils donnèrent l’onction à David pour le faire roi sur Israël.
Psaume 121 (122), 1-2, 3-4, 5-6
R/ Dans la joie, nous irons à la maison du Seigneur. (cf. Ps 121, 1)
Quelle joie quand on m’a dit: « Nous irons à la maison du Seigneur!» Maintenant notre marche prend fin devant tes portes, Jérusalem !
Jérusalem, te voici dans tes murs : ville où tout ensemble ne fait qu’un! C’est là que montent les tribus, les tribus du Seigneur, là qu’Israël doit rendre grâce au nom du Seigneur.
C’est là le siège du droit, le siège de la maison de David. Appelez le bonheur sur Jérusalem : « Paix à ceux qui t’aiment ! »
2ème lecture : Col 1, 12-20
Frères, rendez grâce à Dieu le Père, qui vous a rendus capables d’avoir part à l’héritage des saints, dans la lumière. Nous arrachant au pouvoir des ténèbres, il nous a placés dans le Royaume de son Fils bien-aimé : en lui nous avons la rédemption, le pardon des péchés. Il est l’image du Dieu invisible, le premier-né, avant toute créature: en lui, tout fut créé, dans le ciel et sur la terre. Les êtres visibles et invisibles, Puissances, Principautés, Souverainetés,Dominations, tout est créé par lui et pour lui. Il est avant toute chose, et tout subsiste en lui. En ce temps-là, on venait de crucifier Jésus, et le peuple restait là à observer. Les chefs tournaient Jésus en dérision et disaient : « Il en a sauvé d’autres : qu’il se sauve lui-même, s’il est le Messie de Dieu, l’Élu ! » Les soldats aussi se moquaient de lui ; s’approchant, ils lui présentaient de la boisson vinaigrée, en disant: « Si tu es le roi des Juifs, sauve-toi toi-même ! » Il y avait aussi une inscription au-dessus de lui: « Celui-ci est le roi des Juifs. » L’un des malfaiteurs suspendus en croix l’injuriait : « N’es-tu pas le Christ? Sauve-toi toi-même, et nous aussi ! » Mais l’autre lui fit de vifs reproches : « Tu ne crains donc pas Dieu ! Tu es pourtant un condamné, toi aussi ! Et puis, pour nous, c’est juste : après ce que nous avons fait, nous avons ce que nous méritons. Méditation :
Jésus est crucifié entre deux malfaiteurs. La repentance d’un des malfaiteurs est un puissant exemple de la grâce de Dieu. En dépit de ses péchés, il reconnaît Jésus comme le Messie et implore Son pardon. Méditons sur la miséricorde infinie de Jésus. Même au moment de Sa propre souffrance, Il offre le salut à ceux qui se tournent vers Lui avec un cœur contrit. Le repentir sincère ouvre la porte au pardon divin. Sachons chercher humblement le pardon de Dieu et reconnaître la grâce offerte par Jésus, même dans nos moments les plus sombres.

Meditation
Jesus is our Saviour and King, who reigns over with authority in heaven and on earth. In today’s Gospel, we see Jesus hanging on the cross, surrounded by criminals, enduring mockery and ridicule from those around him. Despite this mistreatment, He remains calm and composed, fully aware of His kingship which is characterised by mercy and love even towards the people who treat him like a criminal. Unlike earthly rulers, who demand obedience through fear, Jesus wins our hearts through his love and sacrifice. On the cross, He reveals the essence of His kingship, which is one of service. He shows us that a king serves, leading his people, not with an iron fist, but with a heart full of love. This revelation of Jesus’ kingship is good news for all of us as it signifies that we have a king who loves us and desires the best for us. In response, we are called to emulate Him by serving others with love and humility, becoming kings and queens of mercy and compassion.

Honorée à Rome depuis le 5e siècle comme vierge et martyre, Cécile serait la fondatrice de la basilique du Transtévère qui porte son nom. Au 15e siècle, la sainte a été choisie comme patronne des musiciens à cause d’une phrase contenue dans le récit légendaire de sa Passion, qui est un poème en l’honneur de la virginité chrétienne : ‘’Pendant que retentissaient les instruments de musique de ses noces, Cécile chantait en son cœur pour le Seigneur.’’

Sainte Cécile a combattu jusqu’à la mort pour être fidèle à son Dieu; elle n’a pas craint les menaces des impies : elle était fondée sur le roc.

1ère lecture : 1 M 6, 1-13
Lecture du premier livre des Martyrs d’Israël En ces jours-là, le roi Antiocos parcourait le haut pays. Il apprit alors qu’il y avait en Perse une ville, Élymaïs, fameuse par ses richesses, son argent et son or; son temple, extrêmement riche, contenait des casques en or, des cuirasses et des armes, laissés là par Alexandre, fils de Philippe et roi de Macédoine, qui régna le premier sur les Grecs. Antiocos arriva, et il tenta de prendre la ville et de la piller, mais il n’y réussit pas, parce que les habitants avaient été informés de son projet. Ils lui résistèrent et livrèrent bataille, si bien qu’il prit la fuite et battit en retraite, accablé de chagrin, pour retourner à Babylone. Il était encore en Perse quand on vint lui annoncer la déroute des troupes qui avaient pénétré en Judée ; Lysias, en particulier, qui avait été envoyé avec un important matériel, avait fait demi-tour devant les Juifs ;ceux-ci s’étaient renforcés grâce aux armes, au matériel et au butin saisis sur les troupes qu’ils avaient battues ; ils avaient renversé l’Abomination qu’Antiocos avait élevée à Jérusalem sur l’autel ; enfin, ils avaient reconstruit comme auparavant de hautes murailles autour du sanctuaire et autour de la ville royale de Bethsour. Quand le roi apprit ces nouvelles, il fut saisi de frayeur et profondément ébranlé. Il s’écroula sur son lit et tomba malade sous le coup du chagrin, parce que les événements n’avaient pas répondu à son attente. Il resta ainsi pendant plusieurs jours, car son profond chagrin se renouvelait sans cesse. Lorsqu’il se rendit compte qu’il allait mourir, il appela tous ses amis et leur dit : « Le sommeil s’est éloigné de mes yeux ; l’inquiétude accable mon cœur, et je me dis : À quelle profonde détresse en suis-je arrivé ? Dans quel abîme suis-je plongé maintenant ? J’étais bon et aimé au temps de ma puissance. En ce temps-là, quelques sadducéens– ceux qui soutiennent qu’il n’y a pas de résurrection – s’approchèrent de Jésus et l’interrogèrent : « Maître, Moïse nous a prescrit : Si un homme a un frère qui meurt en laissant une épouse mais pas d’enfant, il doit épouser la veuve pour susciter une descendance à son frère. Or, il y avait sept frères : le premier se maria et mourut sans enfant ; de même le deuxième, puis le troisième épousèrent la veuve, et ainsi tous les sept : ils moururent sans laisser d’enfants. Finalement la femme mourut aussi. Eh bien, à la résurrection, cette femme-là, duquel d’entre eux sera-t-elle l’épouse, puisque les sept l’ont eue pour épouse ? » Jésus leur répondit : « Les enfants de ce monde prennent femme et mari. Mais ceux qui ont été jugés dignes d’avoir part au monde à venir et à la résurrection d’entre les morts ne prennent ni femme ni mari, car ils ne peuvent plus mourir : ils sont semblables aux anges, ils sont enfants de Dieu et enfants de la résurrection. Méditation :
Jésus aborde la question du mariage après la résurrection. Il nous enseigne que la vie éternelle transcende nos compréhensions terrestres. Le mariage, qui est sacré sur terre, prend une nouvelle signification dans la présence de Dieu. Méditons sur la grandeur et la profondeur du plan de Dieu pour notre vie éternelle. Au-delà de nos limites humaines, Il nous offre une réalité céleste où l’amour et la communion sont parfaits. En méditant sur ces paroles de Jésus, renforçons notre foi en la vie éternelle, où nous serons unis à Dieu d’une manière que nous ne pouvons pas encore comprendre. Cherchons à vivre avec espérance, sachant que notre avenir est entre les mains du Créateur qui nous aime infiniment.

Devotion to St Cecilia, in whose honour a basilica was constructed in Rome in the fifth century, has spread far and wide because of the Passion of Saint Cecilia, which holds her up as a perfect example of a Christian woman, who embraced virginity and suffered martyrdom for the love of Christ.

Behold, now she follows the Lamb who was crucified for us, powerful in virginity, modesty her offering, a sacrifice on the altar of chastity.

O God, who gladden us each year with the feast day of your handmaid Saint Cecilia, grant, we pray, that what has been devoutly handed down concerning her may offer us examples to imitate and proclaim the wonders worked in his servants by Christ your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 1 Maccabees 6:1-13
King Antiochus was making his way across the upper provinces; he had heard that in Persia there was a city called Elymais, renowned for its riches, its silver and gold, and its very wealthy temple containing golden armour, breastplates and weapons, left there by Alexander son of Philip, the king of Macedon, the first to reign over the Greeks. He therefore went and attempted to take the city and pillage it, but without success, since the citizens learnt of his intention, and offered him a stiff resistance, whereupon he turned about and retreated, disconsolate, in the direction of Babylon. But while he was still in Persia news reached him that the armies that had invaded the land of Judah had been defeated, and that Lysias in particular had advanced in massive strength, only to be forced to turn and flee before the Jews; these had been strengthened by the acquisition of arms, supplies and abundant spoils from the armies they had cut to pieces; they had overthrown the abomination he had erected over the altar in Jerusalem, and had encircled the sanctuary with high walls as in the past, and had fortified Bethzur, one of his cities. When the king heard this news he was amazed and profoundly shaken; he threw himself on his bed and fell into a lethargy from acute disappointment, because things had not turned out for him as he had planned. And there he remained for many days, subject to deep and recurrent fits of melancholy, until he understood that he was dying. Then summoning all his Friends, he said to them, ‘Sleep evades my eyes, and my heart is cowed by anxiety. I have been asking myself how I could have come to such a pitch of distress, so great a flood as that which now engulfs me – I who was so generous and well-loved in my heyday. But now I remember the wrong I did in Jerusalem when I seized all the vessels of silver and gold there, and ordered the extermination of the inhabitants of Judah for no reason at all. This, I am convinced, is why these misfortunes have overtaken me, and why I am dying of melancholy in a foreign land.’

Some Sadducees – those who say that there is no resurrection – approached Jesus and they put this question to him, ‘Master, we have it from Moses in writing, that if a man’s married brother dies childless, the man must marry the widow to raise up children for his brother. Well then, there were seven brothers. The first, having married a wife, died childless. The second and then the third married the widow. And the same with all seven, they died leaving no children. Finally the woman herself died. Now, at the resurrection, to which of them will she be wife since she had been married to all seven?’ Jesus replied, ‘The children of this world take wives and husbands, but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the dead do not marry because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of the resurrection they are sons of God. And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all men are in fact alive.’ Some scribes then spoke up. ‘Well put, Master’ they said – because they would not dare to ask him any more questions.

O God, who bestowed on Saint Cecilia a crown among the Saints for her twofold triumph of virginity and martyrdom, grant, we pray, through the power of this Sacrament, that, bravely overcoming every evil, we may attain the glory of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
In today’s Gospel, the Sadducees approach Jesus not seeking wisdom but attempting to trap Him in a seemingly insoluble dilemma. However, Jesus, in His divine wisdom, responds to their question by addressing the nature of the Resurrection and the life to come. The exchange between Jesus and the Sadducees imparts two crucial lessons. Firstly, Jesus teaches us about the reality of the Resurrection, emphasising that life does not end with physical death. This teaching, central to our Christian faith, instills hope in the face of death. Secondly, the exchange reveals God’s infinite wisdom and sovereignty. He shows that human understanding is limited, urging us to trust in His plan of salvation for us, even when we cannot fully comprehend it. In life, we often encounter complex questions and challenges similar to the complex scenario the Sadducees are presenting to Jesus. We must remember that God’s wisdom and providence surpass our human limitations in these moments. While we may lack all the answers, we can place our trust in God’s plan and promise of eternal life.

As we venerate the glorious memory of the most holy Virgin Mary, grant, we pray, O Lord, through her intercession, that we, too, may merit to receive from the fullness of your grace. First reading : 1 Maccabees 4:36-37,52-59
Judas and his brothers said, ‘Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purify the sanctuary and dedicate it.’ So they marshalled the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion. On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year one hundred and forty-eight, they rose at dawn and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of holocausts which they had made. The altar was dedicated, to the sound of zithers, harps and cymbals, at the same time of year and on the same day on which the pagans had originally profaned it. The whole people fell prostrate in adoration, praising to the skies him who had made them so successful. For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyfully offering holocausts, communion sacrifices and thanksgivings. They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, repaired the gates and the storerooms and fitted them with doors. There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, and the reproach of the pagans was lifted from them. Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of the dedication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.

Gospel : Luke 19:45-48
Jesus went into the Temple and began driving out those who were selling. ‘According to scripture,’ he said ‘my house will be a house of prayer. But you have turned it into a robbers’ den.’ He taught in the Temple every day. The chief priests and the scribes, with the support of the leading citizens, tried to do away with him, but they did not see how they could carry this out because the people as a whole hung on his words.

As we receive this heavenly Sacrament, we beseech, O Lord, your mercy, that we, who rejoice in commemorating the Blessed Virgin Mary, may by imitating her serve worthily the mystery of our redemption. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of Mary, which invites reflection on the Mary’s early life and her dedication to the Lord in the Temple. In the Gospel, Jesus enters the Temple and cleanses it, emphasising the sanctity of this sacred space for worship and communion with God. Although not directly related to Mary’s presentation, we can still draw a beautiful connection from it in the Gospel. Just as Jesus is passionate about the Temple’s sanctity and wants it to be a place of worship and communion with God, Mary’s presentation in the Temple is dedicating her to God’s service. Her parents, Joachim and Anne, offer her to God, just as we should offer ourselves to God in our lives. Mary’s life serves as a living example of dedication and service to the Lord. She uniquely carries God in her womb, making her a “house of God.” On this Feast of the Presentation of Mary, let us emulate her example of total dedication to the Lord. May we cleanse our hearts, removing obstacles hindering us from fully embracing God’s will. Inspired by Mary’s resounding “yes” to God’s plan, let us respond with a heart full of faith and love, committing ourselves wholeheartedly to the Lord.

L’Église célèbre aujourd’hui l’offrande intérieure qui fit de Marie, pour toujours, l’humble et fidèle ‘’servante du Seigneur’’. D’après un évangile apocryphe, cette offrande aurait pris une forme extérieure : Marie aurait été présentée, dès son enfance, au Temple de Jérusalem.

Nous te saluons, Mère très sainte: tu as mis au monde le Roi qui gouverne le ciel et la terre pour les siècles sans fin.
Prière d’ouverture
Puisque nous célébrons la mémoire de la très sainte Vierge Marie, accorde- nous, Seigneur, par son intercession, le bonheur de vivre dès maintenant en ta présence et d’avoir part un jour à la plénitude de ta grâce. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : 1 M 4, 36-37. 52-59
En ces jours-là, Judas et ses frères déclarèrent : « Voilà nos ennemis écrasés, montons purifier le Lieu saint et en faire la dédicace. » Toute l’armée se rassembla, et ils montèrent à la montagne de Sion. Le vingt-cinquième jour du neuvième mois, de grand matin, les prêtres offrirent le sacrifice prescrit par la Loi sur le nouvel autel qu’ils avaient construit. On fit la dédicace de l’autel au chant des hymnes, au son des cithares, des harpes et des cymbales. C’était juste l’anniversaire du jour où les païens l’avaient profané. Le peuple entier se prosterna la face contre terre pour adorer, puis ils bénirent le Ciel qui avait fait aboutir leur effort. Pendant huit jours, ils célébrèrent la dédicace de l’autel, en offrant, dans l’allégresse, des holocaustes, des sacrifices de communion et d’action de grâce. Ils ornèrent la façade du Temple de couronnes d’or et de boucliers, ils en restaurèrent les entrées et les salles et y replacèrent des portes. Il y eut une grande allégresse dans le peuple, et l’humiliation infligée par les païens fut effacée. Judas Maccabée décida, avec ses frères et toute l’assemblée d’Israël, que l’anniversaire de la dédicace de l’autel serait célébré pendant huit jours chaque année à cette date, dans la joie et l’allégresse.

En ce temps-là, entré dans le Temple, Jésus se mit à en expulser les vendeurs. Il leur déclarait : « Il est écrit : Ma maison sera une maison de prière. Or vous, vous en avez fait une caverne de bandits. » Et il était chaque jour dans le Temple pour enseigner. Les grands prêtres et les scribes, ainsi que les notables, cherchaient à le faire mourir, mais ils ne trouvaient pas ce qu’ils pourraient faire ; en effet, le peuple tout entier, suspendu à ses lèvres, l’écoutait.
Prière sur les offrandes
Dans son amour pour les hommes, que ton Fils unique vienne à notre secours, Seigneur : puisque sa naissance n’a pas altéré mais a consacré la virginité de sa mère, qu’il nous délivre aujourd’hui de nos péchés et te rende agréable cette offrande. Lui qui.

Prière après la communion
En communiant à la nourriture du ciel, nous implorons ta bonté, Seigneur : puisque nous avons la joie de faire mémoire de la Vierge Marie, rends-nous capables d’accueillir comme elle le mystère de notre rédemption. Par Jésus.
Méditation :
Jésus chasse les marchands du temple, purifiant ce lieu sacré de la corruption. L’action de Jésus souligne l’importance de la sainteté dans la maison de Dieu. Le temple était destiné à être un lieu de prière et de révérence. Méditons sur la pureté de nos cœurs. Sommes-nous disposés à chasser toute forme de corruption spirituelle de nos vies pour rendre notre être intérieur plus accueillant à la présence de Dieu ? En suivant l’exemple de Jésus, cherchons à purifier nos cœurs, à cultiver la prière et à vivre dans la révérence envers Dieu. Que notre vie intérieure soit un lieu saint où Dieu trouve Son repos.
