Saint Edmund (d.869)
Psalter: Week I
Green
He was king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of East Anglia. Edmund was captured and killed by the Danish Great Heathen Army, which invaded England in 869, and the tradition is that he died the death of a Christian martyr.

First reading : 1 Maccabees 2:15-29
The commissioners of King Antiochus who were enforcing the apostasy came to the town of Modein to make them sacrifice. Many Israelites gathered round them, but Mattathias and his sons drew apart. The king’s commissioners then addressed Mattathias as follows, ‘You are a respected leader, a great man in this town; you have sons and brothers to support you. Be the first to step forward and conform to the king’s decree, as all the nations have done, and the leaders of Judah and the survivors in Jerusalem; you and your sons shall be reckoned among the Friends of the King, you and your sons shall be honoured with gold and silver and many presents.’ Raising his voice, Mattathias retorted, ‘Even if every nation living in the king’s dominions obeys him, each forsaking its ancestral religion to conform to his decrees, I, my sons and my brothers will still follow the covenant of our ancestors. Heaven preserve us from forsaking the Law and its observances. As for the king’s orders, we will not follow them: we will not swerve from our own religion either to right or to left.’ As he finished speaking, a Jew came forward in the sight of all to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modein as the royal edict required. When Mattathias saw this, he was fired with zeal; stirred to the depth of his being, he gave vent to his legitimate anger, threw himself on the man and slaughtered him on the altar. At the same time he killed the king’s commissioner who was there to enforce the sacrifice, and tore down the altar. In his zeal for the Law he acted as Phinehas did against Zimri son of Salu. Then Mattathias went through the town, shouting at the top of his voice, ‘Let everyone who has a fervour for the Law and takes his stand on the covenant come out and follow me.’ Then he fled with his sons into the hills, leaving all their possessions behind in the town. At this, many who were concerned for virtue and justice went down to the desert and stayed there.

As Jesus drew near Jerusalem and came in sight of the city he shed tears over it and said, ‘If you in your turn had only understood on this day the message of peace! Yes, a time is coming when your enemies will raise fortifications all round you, when they will encircle you and hem you in on every side; they will dash you and the children inside your walls to the ground; they will leave not one stone standing on another within you – and all because you did not recognise your opportunity when God offered it!’

Meditation
Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem, expressing profound sorrow and lamentation as He foresees the impending destruction that would befall Jerusalem and its inhabitants due to their failure to recognise the time of their divine visitation. His tears unveil the depth of love and compassion He held for the people, yearning for them to embrace the path to peace and salvation. Despite being the centre of religious life and devotion, the inhabitants of Jerusalem remain oblivious to the opportunity for reconciliation and redemption that stood before them. Jesus’ weeping over Jerusalem highlights the crucial importance of recognising moments of grace and divine presence. The city’s preoccupation with rituals and routines caused them to overlook the very presence of God among them. This poignant scene prompts reflection on our own lives. How often do we become entangled in life’s routines, missing the moments of grace and the presence of God in our lives? How frequently do we overlook opportunities for reconciliation, hindering the deepening of our relationship with God and others?

1ère lecture : 1 M 2, 15-29
En ces jours-là, les hommes envoyés par le roi Antiocos pour contraindre les gens à l’apostasie arrivèrent dans la ville de Modine pour y organiser des sacrifices. Beaucoup en Israël allèrent à eux; Mattathias et ses fils vinrent à la réunion. Les envoyés du roi prirent la parole pour dire à Mattathias : « Tu es un chef honoré et puissant dans cette ville, soutenu par des fils et des frères. Avance donc le premier, et exécute l’ordre du roi, comme l’ont fait toutes les nations, les hommes de Juda et ceux qui sont restés à Jérusalem. Alors, toi et tes fils, vous serez les amis du roi. Toi et tes fils, vous serez comblés d’argent, d’or et de cadeaux nombreux.» Mattathias répondit d’une voix forte : « Toutes les nations qui appartiennent aux États du roi peuvent bien lui obéir en rejetant chacune la religion de ses pères, et se conformer à ses commandements ; mais moi, mes fils et mes frères, nous suivrons l’Alliance de nos pères. Que le Ciel nous préserve d’abandonner la Loi et ses préceptes ! Nous n’obéirons pas aux ordres du roi, nous ne dévierons pas de notre religion, ni à droite ni à gauche. » Dès qu’il eut fini de prononcer ces paroles, un Juif s’avança en présence de tout le monde pour offrir le sacrifice, selon l’ordre du roi, sur cet autel de Modine. À cette vue, Mattathias s’enflamma d’indignation et frémit jusqu’au fond de lui-même; il laissa monter en lui une légitime colère, courut à l’homme et l’égorgea sur l’autel. Quant à l’envoyé du roi, qui voulait contraindre à offrir le sacrifice, Mattathias le tua à l’instant même, et il renversa l’autel. Il s’enflamma d’ardeur pour la Loi comme jadis Pinhas contre Zimri. Alors Mattathias se mit à crier d’une voix forte à travers la ville : « Ceux qui sont enflammés d’une ardeur jalouse pour la Loi et qui soutiennent l’Alliance, qu’ils sortent tous de la ville à ma suite. » Il s’enfuit dans la montagne avec ses fils, en abandonnant tout ce qu’ils avaient dans la ville. Alors, beaucoup de ceux qui recherchaient la justice et la Loi s’en allèrent vivre au désert.
Psaume : 49 (50), 1-2, 5-6, 14-15
R/ Offre à Dieu le sacrifice d’action de grâce.
Le Dieu des dieux, le Seigneur, parle et convoque la terre du soleil levant jusqu’au soleil couchant. De Sion, belle entre toutes, Dieu resplendit.
« Assemblez, devant moi, mes fidèles, eux qui scellent d’un sacrifice mon alliance. Et les cieux proclament sa justice : oui, le juge, c’est Dieu !

En ce temps-là, lorsque Jésus fut près de Jérusalem, voyant la ville, il pleura sur elle, en disant : « Ah ! si toi aussi, tu avais reconnu en ce jour ce qui donne la paix ! Mais maintenant cela est resté caché à tes yeux. Oui, viendront pour toi des jours où tes ennemis construiront des ouvrages de siège contre toi, t’encercleront et te presseront de tous côtés ; ils t’anéantiront, toi et tes enfants qui sont chez toi, et ils ne laisseront pas chez toi pierre sur pierre, parce que tu n’as pas reconnue moment où Dieu te visitait. »

Méditation :
Jésus pleure sur Jérusalem et prophétise sa destruction. Le chagrin de Jésus pour Jérusalem montre Son amour pour Son peuple et Sa préoccupation pour leur destin spirituel. Méditons sur la compassion de Jésus. Il désire ardemment que les gens reconnaissent le chemin de la paix et de la réconciliation, mais souvent, ils ne le voient pas. En pleurant sur Jérusalem, Jésus nous rappelle l’importance de répondre à Son appel à la paix et à la repentance. Prenons à cœur Son avertissement et cherchons la paix spirituelle et la réconciliation avec Dieu. Que nos cœurs soient ouverts à la grâce de la repentance et de la paix offerte par Jésus.

There were seven brothers who were arrested with their mother. The king tried to force them to taste pig’s flesh, which the Law forbids, by torturing them with whips and scourges. But the mother was especially admirable and worthy of honourable remembrance, for she watched the death of seven sons in the course of a single day, and endured it resolutely because of her hopes in the Lord. Indeed she encouraged each of them in the language of their ancestors; filled with noble conviction, she reinforced her womanly argument with manly courage, saying to them, ‘I do not know how you appeared in my womb; it was not I who endowed you with breath and life, I had not the shaping of your every part. It is the creator of the world, ordaining the process of man’s birth and presiding over the origin of all things, who in his mercy will most surely give you back both breath and life, seeing that you now despise your own existence for the sake of his laws.’ Antiochus thought he was being ridiculed, suspecting insult in the tone of her voice; and as the youngest was still alive he appealed to him not with mere words but with promises on oath to make him both rich and happy if he would abandon the traditions of his ancestors; he would make him his Friend and entrust him with public office. The young man took no notice at all, and so the king then appealed to the mother, urging her to advise the youth to save his life. After a great deal of urging on his part she agreed to try persuasion on her son. Bending over him, she fooled the cruel tyrant with these words, uttered in the language of their ancestors, ‘My son, have pity on me; I carried you nine months in my womb and suckled you three years, fed you and reared you to the age you are now (and cherished you). I implore you, my child, observe heaven and earth, consider all that is in them, and acknowledge that God made them out of what did not exist, and that mankind comes into being in the same way. Do not fear this executioner, but prove yourself worthy of your brothers, and make death welcome, so that in the day of mercy I may receive you back in your brothers’ company.’ She had scarcely ended when the young man said, ‘What are you all waiting for? I will not comply with the king’s ordinance; I obey the ordinance of the Law given to our ancestors through Moses. As for you, sir, who have contrived every kind of evil against the Hebrews, you will certainly not escape the hands of God.’

While the people were listening, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and they imagined that the kingdom of God was going to show itself then and there. Accordingly he said, ‘A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be appointed king and afterwards return. He summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds. “Do business with these” he told them “until I get back.” But his compatriots detested him and sent a delegation to follow him with this message, “We do not want this man to be our king.” ‘Now on his return, having received his appointment as king, he sent for those servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made. The first came in and said, “Sir, your one pound has brought in ten.” “Well done, my good servant!” he replied “Since you have proved yourself faithful in a very small thing, you shall have the government of ten cities.” Then came the second and said, “Sir, your one pound has made five.” To this one also he said, “And you shall be in charge of five cities.” Next came the other and said, “Sir, here is your pound. I put it away safely in a piece of linen because I was afraid of you; for you are an exacting man: you pick up what you have not put down and reap what you have not sown.” “You wicked servant!” he said “Out of your own mouth I condemn you. So you knew I was an exacting man, picking up what I have not put down and reaping what I have not sown? Then why did you not put my money in the bank? Meditation
The parable in today’s Gospel teaches us a lesson on the prudent use of our time, talents, and resources in the Kingdom of God. It emphasises the need to actively engage and multiply the gifts God bestows upon us. He discourages us from burying them in the ground. Each of us has received various gifts from God, including the gift of life, intelligence, faith, and more. These gifts should not be hoarded but employed in the service of God to build his Kingdom. Investing in the Kingdom of God takes various forms. We can volunteer our time to assist others, and contribute financially to charitable causes. We can offer prayers for those in need, and share our faith with others. Regardless of how modest our gifts may appear, they hold the potential to make a significant impact in the Kingdom of God. Let us pray for the courage and conviction to invest our time, talents, and resources in the advancement of God’s Kingdom.

En ces jours-là, sept frères avaient été arrêtés avec leur mère. A coups de fouet et de nerf de bœuf, le roi Antiocos voulut les contraindre à manger du porc, viande interdite. Leur mère fut particulièrement admirable et digne d’une illustre mémoire : voyant mourir ses sept fils dans l’espace d’un seul jour, elle le supporta vaillamment parce qu’elle avait mis son espérance dans le Seigneur. Elle exhortait chacun d’eux dans la langue de ses pères ; cette femme héroïque leur parlait avec un courage viril : « Je suis incapable de dire comment vous vous êtes formés dans mes entrailles. Ce n’est pas moi qui vous ai donné l’esprit et la vie, qui ai organisé les éléments dont chacun de vous est composé. C’est le Créateur du monde qui façonne l’enfant à l’origine, qui préside à l’origine de toute chose. Et c’est lui qui, dans sa miséricorde, vous rendra l’esprit et la vie, parce que, pour l’amour de ses lois, vous méprisez maintenant votre propre existence. » Antiocos s’imagina qu’on le méprisait, et soupçonna que ce discours contenait des insultes. Il se mit à exhorter le plus jeune, le dernier survivant. Bien plus, il lui promettait avec serment de le rendre à la fois riche et très heureux s’il abandonnait les usages de ses pères : il en ferait son ami et lui confierait des fonctions publiques. Comme le jeune homme n’écoutait pas, le roi appela la mère, et il l’exhortait à conseiller l’adolescent pour le sauver. Au bout de ces longues exhortations, elle consentit à persuader son fils. Elle se pencha vers lui, et lui parla dans la langue de ses pères, trompant ainsi le cruel tyran : « Mon fils, aie pitié de moi: je t’ai porté neuf mois dans mon sein, je t’ai allaité pendant trois ans, je t’ai nourri et élevé jusqu’à l’âge où tu es parvenu, j’ai pris soin de toi. Je t’en conjure, mon enfant, regarde le ciel et la terre avec tout ce qu’ils contiennent : sache que Dieu a fait tout cela de rien, et que la race des hommes est née de la même manière. Ne crains pas ce bourreau, montre-toi digne de tes frères et accepte la mort, afin que je te retrouve avec eux au jour de la miséricorde. » Lorsqu’elle eut fini de parler, le jeune homme déclara: « Qu’attendez-vous ? Je n’obéis pas à l’ordre du roi, mais j’écoute l’ordre de la Loi donnée à nos pères par Moïse. Et toi qui as inventé toutes sortes de mauvais traitements contre les Hébreux, tu n’échapperas pas à la main de Dieu. »

En ce temps-là, comme on l’écoutait, Jésus ajouta une parabole : il était près de Jérusalem et ses auditeurs pensaient que le royaume de Dieu allait se manifester à l’instant même. Voici donc ce qu’il dit : « Un homme de la noblesse partit dans un pays lointain pour se faire donner la royauté et revenir ensuite. Il appela dix de ses serviteurs, et remit à chacun une somme de la valeur d’une mine ; puis il leur dit : “Pendant mon voyage, faites de bonnes affaires. Mais ses concitoyens le détestaient, et ils envoyèrent derrière lui une délégation chargée de dire : “Nous ne voulons pas que cet homme règne sur nous. Quand il fut de retour après avoir reçu la royauté, il fit convoquer les serviteurs auxquels il avait remis l’argent, afin de savoir ce que leurs affaires avaient rapporté. Le premier se présenta et dit : “Seigneur, la somme que tu m’avais remise a été multipliée par dix. Le roi lui déclara : “Très bien, bon serviteur ! Puisque tu as été fidèle en si peu de chose, reçois l’autorité sur dix villes.” Le second vint dire : “La somme que tu m’avais remise, Seigneur, a été multipliée par cinq. A celui-là encore, le roi dit : “Toi, de même, sois à la tête de cinq villes. Le dernier vint dire : “Seigneur, voici la somme que tu m’avais remise ; je l’ai gardée enveloppée dans un linge. En effet, j’avais peur de toi, car tu es un homme exigeant, tu retires ce que tu n’as pas mis en dépôt, tu moissonnes ce que tu n’as pas semé.” Le roi lui déclara : “Je vais te juger sur tes paroles, serviteur mauvais : tu savais que je suis un homme exigeant, que je retire ce que je n’ai pas mis en dépôt, que je moissonne ce que je n’ai pas semé ; alors pourquoi n’as-tu pas mis mon argent à la banque? À mon arrivée, je l’aurais repris avec les intérêts.” Et le roi dit à ceux qui étaient là : “Retirez-lui cette somme et donnez-la à celui qui a dix fois plus.” On lui dit: “Seigneur, il a dix fois plus ! – Je vous le déclare : on donnera à celui qui a ; mais celui qui n’a rien se verra enlever même ce qu’il a. Quant à mes ennemis, ceux qui n’ont pas voulu que je règne sur eux, amenez-les ici et égorgez-les devant moi.” » Après avoir ainsi parlé, Jésus partit en avant pour monter à Jérusalem.

Les talents dans cette parabole ne se limitent pas à des compétences financières, mais incluent également nos capacités et notre temps. Jésus nous appelle à être des administrateurs fidèles de tout ce que Dieu nous a donné. Méditons sur notre responsabilité envers les dons de Dieu. Sommes-nous bons et fidèles dans leur utilisation, ou les enterrons-nous par crainte ou négligence ? En investissant nos dons dans le service de Dieu et des autres, nous participons à la croissance du royaume divin. Soyons des gestionnaires fidèles et diligents des talents que Dieu nous a confiés, pour Sa gloire et le bien de tous.

The Basilica of St Peter, today known as the Vatican Basilica is the seat of Catholicity and built over the tomb of St Peter the first Pope. Over Paul’s grave is built another magnificent Catholic Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls.

First reading : 2 Maccabees 6:18-31
Eleazar, one of the foremost teachers of the Law, a man already advanced in years and of most noble appearance, was being forced to open his mouth wide to swallow pig’s flesh. But he, resolving to die with honour rather than to live disgraced, went to the block of his own accord, spitting the stuff out, the plain duty of anyone with the courage to reject what it is not lawful to taste, even from a natural tenderness for his own life. Those in charge of the impious banquet, because of their long-standing friendship with him, took him aside and privately urged him to have meat brought of a kind he could properly use, prepared by himself, and only pretend to eat the portions of sacrificial meat as prescribed by the king; this action would enable him to escape death, by availing himself of an act of kindness prompted by their long friendship. But having taken a noble decision worthy of his years and the dignity of his great age and the well earned distinction of his grey hairs, worthy too of his impeccable conduct from boyhood, and above all of the holy legislation established by God himself, he publicly stated his convictions, telling them to send him at once to Hades. ‘Such pretence’ he said ‘does not square with our time of life; many young people would suppose that Eleazar at the age of ninety had conformed to the foreigners’ way of life, and because I had played this part for the sake of a paltry brief spell of life might themselves be led astray on my account; I should only bring defilement and disgrace on my old age. Even though for the moment I avoid execution by man, I can never, living or dead, elude the grasp of the Almighty. Therefore if I am man enough to quit this life here and now I shall prove myself worthy of my old age, and I shall have left the young a noble example of how to make a good death, eagerly and generously, for the venerable and holy laws.’ With these words he went straight to the block. His escorts, so recently well disposed towards him, turned against him after this declaration, which they regarded as sheer madness. Just before he died under the blows, he groaned aloud and said, ‘The Lord whose knowledge is holy sees clearly that, though I might have escaped death, whatever agonies of body I now endure under this bludgeoning, in my soul I am glad to suffer, because of the awe which he inspires in me.’ This was how he died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a record of virtue not only for the young but for the great majority of the nation.

Gospel : Luke 19:1-10
Jesus entered Jericho and was going through the town when a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance: he was one of the senior tax collectors and a wealthy man. He was anxious to see what kind of man Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way. When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him: ‘Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry, because I must stay at your house today.’ And he hurried down and welcomed him joyfully. They all complained when they saw what was happening. ‘He has gone to stay at a sinner’s house’ they said. But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, ‘Look, sir, I am going to give half my property to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody I will pay him back four times the amount.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek out and save what was lost.’

Meditation
Zacchaeus serves as a compelling example of someone who experiences God’s merciful love. Even though Zacchaeus is a sinner, Jesus still extends love towards him, prompting the sinful man to repent of his sins and change his life. This passage teaches us about the profound nature of God’s merciful love, which reaches everyone, even sinners and outcasts. God desires that everyone, regardless of their past, should experience His salvation. The passage emphasises the universal call to experience God’s merciful love. Despite our sinful nature, Jesus loves us unconditionally and seeks to forgive our sins and give us a new lease of life. Like Zacchaeus, if we are willing to open our hearts to Jesus, we can undergo remarkable transformation. Jesus stands ever ready to renew us and empower us to lead lives of holiness and righteousness.

Depuis la fin du 14e siècle, les papes célèbrent à Saint-Pierre la plupart de leurs liturgies solennelles. Rebâtie au 16e siècle, notamment par Michel-Ange, la plus vaste église de la chrétienté fut consacrée en 1626. Le premier et le deuxième concile du Vatican y tinrent leurs sessions.

1ère lecture : 2 M 6, 18-31
En ces jours-là, Éléazar était l’un des scribes les plus éminents. C’était un homme très âgé, et de très belle allure. On voulut l’obliger à manger du porc en lui ouvrant la bouche de force. Préférant avoir une mort prestigieuse plutôt qu’une vie abjecte, il marchait de son plein gré vers l’instrument du supplice, après avoir recraché cette viande, comme on doit le faire quand on a le courage de rejeter ce qu’il n’est pas permis de manger, même par amour de la vie. Ceux qui étaient chargés de ce repas sacrilège le connaissaient de longue date. Ils le prirent à part et lui conseillèrent de faire apporter des viandes dont l’usage était permis, et qu’il aurait préparées lui-même. Il n’aurait qu’à faire semblant de manger les chairs de la victime pour obéir au roi ; en agissant ainsi, il échapperait à la mort et serait traité avec humanité grâce à la vieille amitié qu’il avait pour eux. Mais il fit un beau raisonnement, bien digne de son âge, du rang que lui donnait sa vieillesse, du respect que lui valaient ses cheveux blancs, de sa conduite irréprochable depuis l’enfance, et surtout digne de la législation sainte établie par Dieu. Il s’exprima en conséquence, demandant qu’on l’envoyât sans tarder au séjour des morts : « Une telle comédie est indigne de mon âge. Car beaucoup de jeunes gens croiraient qu’Eléazar, à 90 ans, adopte la manière de vivre des étrangers. À cause de cette comédie, par ma faute, ils se laisseraient égarer eux aussi ; et moi, pour un misérable reste de vie, j’attirerais sur ma vieillesse la honte et le déshonneur. Même si j’évite, pour le moment, le châtiment qui vient des hommes, je n’échapperai pas, vivant ou mort, aux mains du Tout-Puissant. C’est pourquoi, en quittant aujourd’hui la vie avec courage, je me montrerai digne de ma vieillesse et, en choisissant de mourir avec détermination et noblesse pour nos vénérables et saintes lois, j’aurai laissé aux jeunes gens le noble exemple d’une belle mort. » Sur ces mots, il alla tout droit au supplice. Pour ceux qui le conduisaient, ces propos étaient de la folie ; c’est pourquoi ils passèrent subitement de la bienveillance à l’hostilité. Quant à lui, au moment de mourir sous les coups, il dit en gémissant : « Le Seigneur, dans sa science sainte, le voit bien : alors que je pouvais échapper à la mort, j’endure sous le fouet des douleurs qui font souffrir mon corps ; mais dans mon âme je les supporte avec joie, parce que je crains Dieu. » Telle fut la mort de cet homme. Il laissa ainsi, non seulement à la jeunesse mais à l’ensemble de son peuple, un exemple de noblesse et un mémorial de vertu.

Évangile : Luc 19, 1-10
En ce temps-là, entré dans la ville de Jéricho, Jésus la traversait. Or, il y avait un homme du nom de Zachée ; il était le chef des collecteurs d’impôts, et c’était quelqu’un de riche. Il cherchait à voir qui était Jésus, mais il ne le pouvait pas à cause de la foule, car il était de petite taille. Il courut donc en avant et grimpa sur un sycomore pour voir Jésus qui allait passer par là. Arrivé à cet endroit, Jésus leva les yeux et lui dit : « Zachée, descends vite : aujourd’hui il faut que j’aille demeurer dans ta maison. » Vite, il descendit et reçut Jésus avec joie. Voyant cela, tous récriminaient: « Il est allé loger chez un homme qui est un pécheur. » Zachée, debout, s’adressa au Seigneur : « Voici, Seigneur : je fais don aux pauvres de la moitié de mes biens, et si j’ai fait du tort à quelqu’un, je vais lui rendre quatre fois plus. » Alors Jésus dit à son sujet : « Aujourd’hui, le salut est arrivé pour cette maison, car lui aussi est un fils d’Abraham. En effet, le Fils de l’homme est venu chercher et sauver ce qui était perdu. »

Permets, Seigneur notre Dieu, que l’offrande placée sous ton regard nous obtienne la grâce de vivre pour toi et nous donne l’éternité bienheureuse. Par Jésus.

Nous venons de communier, Seigneur, au don sacré du corps et du sang de ton Fils, et nous te prions humblement : Que cette eucharistie offerte en mémoire de lui, comme il nous a dit de le faire, augmente en nous la charité. Par Jésus.
Méditation :
Nous trouvons l’histoire de Zachée, le collecteur d’impôts qui rencontre Jésus. Zachée était un homme riche, mais il avait soif de rencontrer Jésus. Il monta dans un arbre pour voir Jésus passer. Cette recherche active de la présence de Dieu nous rappelle l’importance de désirer ardemment une relation avec le Christ. Méditons sur notre propre désir de rencontrer Jésus. Cherchons-nous activement Sa présence et Son enseignement dans nos vies, même si cela signifie surmonter des obstacles ? La réponse de Jésus à Zachée montre que Dieu accueille chaleureusement ceux qui cherchent à se rapprocher de Lui. Que notre désir de rencontrer Jésus nous pousse à vivre une vie de repentance et de générosité, car Sa grâce transforme nos cœurs et nos actions.

Sainte elisabeth de hongrie

Mariée à quatorze au duc Louis IV de Thuringe, et mère de trois enfants, Elisabeth (1207-1231) est veuve à vingt ans. Elle subit alors d’incroyables humiliations qu’elle supporte avec douceur. Devenue tertiaire franciscaine, elle se donne avec amour au service des pauvres et meurt à vingt-quatre ans. Figure de sainte très populaire, elle fut canonisée quatre ans après sa mort.

À ceux qui l’ont servi dans leurs frères, le Seigneur dit : « Venez, les bénis de mon Père. J’étais malade et vous m’avez visité… Vraiment, je vous le dis, chaque fois que vous l’avez fait à l’un de ces petits qui sont mes frères, c’est à moi que vous l’avez fait. »
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as donné à sainte Élisabeth de Hongrie de reconnaître et de vénérer le Christ dans les pauvres, accorde-nous de servir avec une inépuisable charité ceux qui sont dans le besoin et l’affliction. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : 1 M 1, 10-15.41-43.54-57. 62-64
En ces jours-là, de la descendance des successeurs d’Alexandre le Grand surgit un homme de péché, Antiocos Epiphane, fils du roi Antiocos le Grand. Il avait séjourné à Rome comme otage, et il devint roi en l’année 137 de l’empire grec. À cette époque, surgirent en Israël des hommes infidèles à la Loi et ils séduisirent beaucoup de gens, car ils disaient : « Allons, faisons alliance avec les nations qui nous entourent. En effet, depuis que nous avons rompu avec elles, il nous est arrivé beaucoup de malheurs. » Ce langage parut judicieux, et quelques-uns, dans le peuple, s’empressèrent d’aller trouver le roi. Celui-ci leur permit d’adopter les usages des nations. Ils construisirent un gymnase à Jérusalem, selon la coutume des nations ; ils effacèrent les traces de leur circoncision, renièrent l’Alliance sainte, s’associèrent aux gens des nations, et se vendirent pour faire le mal. Le roi Antiocos prescrivit à tous les habitants de son royaume de ne faire désormais qu’un seul peuple, et d’abandonner leurs coutumes particulières. Toutes les nations païennes se conformèrent à cet ordre. En Israël, beaucoup suivirent volontiers la religion du roi, offrirent des sacrifices aux idoles, et profanèrent le sabbat. Le quinzième jour du neuvième mois, en l’année 145, Antiocos éleva sur l’autel des sacrifices l’abomination de la désolation, et, dans les villes de Juda autour de Jérusalem, ses partisans élevèrent des autels païens. Ils brûlèrent de l’encens aux portes des maisons et sur les places. Tous les livres de la Loi qu’ils découvraient, ils les jetaient au feu après les avoir lacérés. Si l’on découvrait chez quelqu’un un livre de l’Alliance, si quelqu’un se conformait à la Loi, le décret du roi le faisait mettre à mort. Cependant, beaucoup en Israël résistèrent et eurent le courage de ne manger aucun aliment impur. Ils acceptèrent de mourir pour ne pas être souillés par ce qu’ils mangeaient et pour ne pas profaner l’Alliance sainte ; et de fait, ils moururent. C’est ainsi que s’abattit sur Israël une grande colère.

Face aux impies, la fureur me prend, car ils abandonnent ta loi. Les pièges de l’impie m’environnent, je n’oublie pas ta loi.
Rachète-moi de l’oppression des hommes, que j’observe tes préceptes. Ceux qui poursuivent le mal s’approchent, ils s’éloignent de ta loi.
Le salut s’éloigne des impies qui ne cherchent pas tes commandements. J’ai vu les renégats : ils me répugnent, car ils ignorent ta promesse.

Évangile : Luc 18, 35-43
Alors que Jésus approchait de Jéricho, un aveugle mendiait, assis au bord de la route. Entendant la foule passer devant lui, il s’informa de ce qu’il y avait. On lui apprit que c’était Jésus le Nazaréen qui passait. Il s’écria: « Jésus, fils de David, prends pitié de moi ! » Ceux qui marchaient en tête le rabrouaient pour le faire taire. Mais lui criait de plus belle: « Fils de David, prends pitié de moi ! » Jésus s’arrêta et il ordonna qu’on le lui amène. Quand il se fut approché, Jésus lui demanda : « Que veux-tu que je fasse pour toi ? » Il répondit : « Seigneur, que je retrouve la vue. » Et Jésus lui dit : « Retrouve la vue ! Ta foi t’a sauvé. » À l’instant même, il retrouva la vue, et il suivait Jésus en rendant gloire à Dieu. Et tout le peuple, voyant cela, adressa une louange à Dieu.

Accueille, Seigneur, les présents de ton peuple ; et tandis que nous rappelons l’amour infini de ton Fils, fais que nous sachions, à l’exemple des saints, t »aimer et aimer notre prochain d’un cœur plus généreux. Par Jésus.

Toi qui nous as fortifiés par cette communion, Seigneur, aide-nous à suivre l’exemple de sainte Elisabeth, dans l’amour qu’elle sut témoigner, et la charité dont elle fit preuve envers ton peuple. Par Jésus.
Méditation : Jésus guérit un aveugle qui avait une foi inébranlable. L’aveugle de Jéricho, malgré son infirmité, a clairement reconnu Jésus comme le Fils de David, le Messie, et a crié à Lui avec foi. Méditons sur la foi de l’aveugle. Sa persévérance et sa conviction nous rappellent que la foi peut nous guider même dans les moments les plus sombres. Lorsque nous rencontrons des défis ou des obstacles, ayons la foi de l’aveugle de Jéricho. Croyons en la puissance de Jésus pour nous guider et nous guérir, sachant que notre foi peut déplacer des montagnes. Que cette méditation nous inspire à crier à Jésus avec une foi audacieuse, car Il est notre lumière dans l’obscurité.

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (1207 – 1231)

She was a daughter of the King of Hungary. She was given in marriage and she had three children. She frequently meditated on heavenly things and when her husband died she embraced poverty and built a hospice in which she cared for the sick herself.

I am like a growing olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the mercy of God, for ever and ever.

O God, by whose gift Saint Elizabeth of Hungary recognized and revered Christ in the poor, grant, through her intercession, that we may serve with unfailing charity the needy and those afflicted. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 1 Maccabees 1:10-15,41-43,54-57,62-64
There grew a sinful offshoot, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus; once a hostage in Rome, he became king in the one hundred and thirty-seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks. It was then that there emerged from Israel a set of renegades who led many people astray. ‘Come,’ they said ‘let us reach an understanding with the pagans surrounding us, for since we separated ourselves from them many misfortunes have overtaken us.’ This proposal proved acceptable, and a number of the people eagerly approached the king, who authorised them to practise the pagan observances. So they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem, such as the pagans have, disguised their circumcision, and abandoned the holy covenant, submitting to the heathen rule as willing slaves of impiety. Then the king issued a proclamation to his whole kingdom that all were to become a single people, each renouncing his particular customs. All the pagans conformed to the king’s decree, and many Israelites chose to accept his religion, sacrificing to idols and profaning the sabbath. The king erected the abomination of desolation above the altar; and altars were built in the surrounding towns of Judah and incense offered at the doors of houses and in the streets. Any books of the Law that came to light were torn up and burned. Whenever anyone was discovered possessing a copy of the covenant or practising the Law, the king’s decree sentenced him to death. Yet there were many in Israel who stood firm and found the courage to refuse unclean food. They chose death rather than contamination by such fare or profanation of the holy covenant, and they were executed. It was a dreadful wrath that visited Israel.

As Jesus drew near to Jericho there was a blind man sitting at the side of the road begging. When he heard the crowd going past he asked what it was all about, and they told him that Jesus the Nazarene was passing by. So he called out, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.’ The people in front scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he shouted all the louder, ‘Son of David, have pity on me.’ Jesus stopped and ordered them to bring the man to him, and when he came up, asked him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ ‘Sir,’ he replied ‘let me see again.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you.’ And instantly his sight returned and he followed him praising God, and all the people who saw it gave praise to God for what had happened.

We bring the offerings of our devotion to be consecrated by you, O Lord, in commemoration of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, for by the consolation you give us in this life you show that we should not lose hope of what is promised for eternity. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
Renewed, O Lord, at the wellsprings of salvation, we humbly entreat you that through the intercession of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, holding more closely day by day to Christ, we may merit to be co-heirs in his Kingdom of grace. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
The poignant words of the blind man, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me,” find a responsive chord in Jesus’s compassionate heart, prompting Him to stop and engage with the man. Inquiring about the blind man’s desire, He receives the plea, “Let me see again.” Jesus, always ready to heal those who approach Him in faith, restores the blind man’s sight, who then immediately becomes His follower. This incident reaffirms Jesus’ willingness to heal those who come to Him in faith. He does not discriminate based on wealth, health, righteousness, or sinfulness. When we come to Jesus with our needs, we can be assured that He will hear our cries and extend mercy to us. Additionally, this passage imparts a valuable lesson on the importance of perseverance. Despite the discouragement fom the crowd, the blind man persists in calling out to Jesus, and his tenacity is rewarded with healing. Let us pray for the gift of perseverance in prayers, allowing us to experience Jesus’ healing and merciful love.

Que résonnent la mer et sa richesse, le monde et tous ses habitants ; que les fleuves battent des mains, que les montagnes chantent leur joie.
Acclamez le Seigneur, car il vient pour gouverner la terre, pour gouverner le monde avec justice et les peuples avec droiture !
2ème lecture : 2 Th 3, 7-12
Frères, vous savez bien, vous, ce qu’il faut faire pour nous imiter. Nous n’avons pas vécu parmi vous de façon désordonnée ; et le pain que nous avons mangé, nous ne l’avons pas reçu gratuitement. Au contraire, dans la peine et la fatigue, nuit et jour, nous avons travaillé pour n’être à la charge d’aucun d’entre vous. Bien sûr, nous avons le droit d’être à charge, mais nous avons voulu être pour vous un modèle à imiter. Et quand nous étions chez vous, nous vous donnions cet ordre : si quelqu’un ne veut pas travailler, qu’il ne mange pas non plus. Or, nous apprenons que certains d’entre vous mènent une vie déréglée, affairés sans rien faire. À ceux-là, nous adressons dans le Seigneur Jésus Christ cet ordre et cet appel : qu’ils travaillent dans le calme pour manger le pain qu’ils auront gagné.

Évangile : Lc 21, 5-19
En ce temps-là, comme certains disciples de Jésus parlaient du Temple, des belles pierres et des ex-voto qui le décoraient, Jésus leur déclara : « Ce que vous contemplez, des jours viendront où il n’en restera pas pierre sur pierre : tout sera détruit. » Ils lui demandèrent : « Maître, quand cela arrivera-t-il ? Et quel sera le signe que cela est sur le point d’arriver?» Jésus répondit : « Prenez garde de ne pas vous laisser égarer, car beaucoup viendront sous mon nom, et diront : ‘C’est moi’, ou encore : ‘Le moment est tout proche.’ Ne marchez pas derrière eux ! Quand vous entendrez parler de guerres et de désordres, ne soyez pas terrifiés : il faut que cela arrive d’abord, mais ce ne sera pas aussitôt la fin. » Alors Jésus ajouta : « On se dressera nation contre nation, royaume contre royaume. Il y aura de grands tremblements de terre et, en divers lieux, des famines et des épidémies ; des phénomènes effrayants surviendront, et de grands signes venus du ciel. Mais avant tout cela, on portera la main sur vous et l’on vous persécutera ; on vous livrera aux synagogues et aux prisons, on vous fera comparaître devant des rois et des gouverneurs, à cause de mon nom. Cela vous amènera à rendre témoignage. Mettez-vous donc dans l’esprit que vous n’avez pas à vous préoccuper de votre défense. C’est moi qui vous donnerai un langage et une sagesse à laquelle tous vos adversaires ne pourront ni résister ni s’opposer. Vous serez livrés même par vos parents, vos frères, votre famille et vos amis, et ils feront mettre à mort certains d’entre vous. Vous serez détestés de tous, à cause de mon nom. Mais pas un cheveu de votre tête ne sera perdu. C’est par votre persévérance que vous garderez votre vie.»
Prière sur les offrandes
Permet, Seigneur notre Dieu, que l’offrande placée sous ton regard nous obtienne la grâce de vivre pour toi et nous donne l’éternité bienheureuse. Par Jésus.

Être proche de Dieu, mettre en lui mon espoir, c’est là tout mon bonheur.
Prière après la communion
Nous venons de communier, Seigneur, au don sacré du corps et du sang de ton Fils, et nous te prions humblement: Que cette eucharistie offerte en mémoire de lui, comme il nous a dit de le faire, augmente en nous la charité. Par Jésus.
Méditation:
Jésus parle de la persécution des croyants et des difficultés à venir. Jésus nous avertit que dans notre cheminement de foi, nous pourrions affronter des épreuves, des persécutions et des oppositions. Méditons sur notre résilience spirituelle. Dans les moments de difficulté, gardons notre foi enracinée dans la confiance en Dieu. Nos épreuves peuvent devenir des occasions de témoigner de Sa grâce. En restant fidèles à Jésus malgré les défis, nous recevons l’assurance que Dieu veille sur nous. Sa promesse de persévérer jusqu’à la fin nous guide dans l’espérance et la paix. Que notre foi demeure inébranlable, sachant que Dieu est notre refuge en toute circonstance.

First reading : Malachi 3:19-20
The day is coming now, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and the evil-doers will be like stubble. The day that is coming is going to burn them up, says the Lord of Hosts, leaving them neither root nor stalk. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will shine out with healing in its rays.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 97(98):5-9

Second reading : 2 Thessalonians 3:7-12
You know how you are supposed to imitate us: now we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we ever have our meals at anyone’s table without paying for them; no, we worked night and day, slaving and straining, so as not to be a burden on any of you. This was not because we had no right to be, but in order to make ourselves an example for you to follow. We gave you a rule when we were with you: do not let anyone have any food if he refuses to do any work. Now we hear that there are some of you who are living in idleness, doing no work themselves but interfering with everyone else’s. In the Lord Jesus Christ, we order and call on people of this kind to go on quietly working and earning the food that they eat.

Gospel : Luke 21:5-19
When some were talking about the Temple, remarking how it was adorned with fine stonework and votive offerings, Jesus said, ‘All these things you are staring at now – the time will come when not a single stone will be left on another: everything will be destroyed.’ And they put to him this question: ‘Master,’ they said ‘when will this happen, then, and what sign will there be that this is about to take place?’ ‘Take care not to be deceived,’ he said ‘because many will come using my name and saying, “I am he” and, “The time is near at hand.” Refuse to join them. And when you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened, for this is something that must happen but the end is not so soon.’ Then he said to them, ‘Nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes and plagues and famines here and there; there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. ‘But before all this happens, men will seize you and persecute you; they will hand you over to the synagogues and to imprisonment, and bring you before kings and governors because of my name – and that will be your opportunity to bear witness. Keep this carefully in mind: you are not to prepare your defence, because I myself shall give you an eloquence and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to resist or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relations and friends; and some of you will be put to death. You will be hated by all men on account of my name, but not a hair of your head will be lost. Your endurance will win you your lives.’
Prayer over the Offerings
Grant, O Lord, we pray, that what we offer in the sight of your majesty may obtain for us the grace of being devoted to you and gain us the prize of everlasting happiness. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
We have partaken of the gifts of this sacred mystery, humbly imploring, O Lord, that what your Son commanded us to do in memory of him may bring us growth in charity. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Some say that persecution serves as the best fertiliser for Christianity. Tertullian, one of the prominent Early Church Fathers of the second century, put it this way: “The blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church.” In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus forewarns his disciples about the persecution that they will encounter. He says that this persecution, challenging at it may be, provides an opportunity for them to testify to their faith. This persecution will come from both within and outside the Church. When faced with persecution, the disciples can share their faith with others and show the world Christ’s love. Essentially, Jesus assures them that they will find salvation through perseverance in the face of persecution. Let us pray for the strength to endure persecution, remaining faithful witnesses to Christ, even while suffering.
