St. Josephine Bakhita
(1869 – 1947)
She was born in Darfur (Sudan). She was kidnapped and sold as a slave. Rescued by an Italian family she became a Christian and joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity. She died in 1947.

Gospel : Mark 7:1-13
The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus, and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and the Jews in general, follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow; and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So these Pharisees and scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands?’ He answered, ‘It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of scripture: This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless, the doctrines they teach are only human regulations. You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions.’ And he said to them, ‘How ingeniously you get round the commandment of God in order to preserve your own tradition! For Moses said: Do your duty to your father and your mother, and, Anyone who curses father or mother must be put to death. But you say, “If a man says to his father or mother: Anything I have that I might have used to help you is Corban (that is, dedicated to God), then he is forbidden from that moment to do anything for his father or mother.” In this way you make God’s word null and void for the sake of your tradition which you have handed down. And you do many other things like this.’

O Lord, our God, who once established these created things to sustain us in our frailty, grant, we pray, that they may become for us now the Sacrament of eternal life. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
In today’s Gospel, Jesus confronted the Pharisees directly and told them that they were hypocrites. He referred to them as the people Isaiah spoke of when he said, “These people honour me with their lips but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrine the precepts of men.” With this Jesus makes it clear that we ought to make sure that the will of God takes hold of our lives and becomes the basis and foundation of everything. His will, His law, His precepts are our foundation rock. God has established his truth as the basis and foundation of everything, and it is this truth, not human precepts, that should guide our lives.

1ère lecture : 1 R 8, 1-7. 9-13
En ces jours-là, Salomon rassembla auprès de lui à Jérusalem les anciens d’Israël et tous les chefs des tribus, les chefs de famille des fils d’Israël, pour aller chercher l’arche de l’Alliance du Seigneur dans la Cité de David, c’est-à-dire à Sion. Tous les hommes d’Israël se rassemblèrent auprès du roi Salomon au septième mois, durant la fête des Tentes. Quand tous les anciens d’Israël furent arrivés, les prêtres se chargèrent de l’Arche. Ils emportèrent l’arche du Seigneur et la tente de la Rencontre avec tous les objets sacrés qui s’y trouvaient; ce sont les prêtres et les lévites qui les transportèrent. Le roi Salomon et, avec lui, toute la communauté d’Israël qu’il avait convoquée auprès de lui devant l’Arche offrirent en sacrifice des moutons et des bœufs: il y en avait un si grand nombre qu’on ne pouvait ni le compter ni l’évaluer. Puis les prêtres transportèrent l’Arche à sa place, dans la Chambre sainte que l’on appelle le Saint des Saints, sous les ailes des kéroubim. Ceux-ci, en effet, étendaient leurs ailes au-dessus de l’emplacement de l’Arche: ils protégeaient l’Arche et ses barres. Dans l’Arche, il n’y avait rien, sinon les deux tables de pierre que Moïse y avait placées au mont Horeb, quand le Seigneur avait conclu alliance avec les fils d’Israël, à leur sortie du pays d’Égypte. Quand les prêtres sortirent du sanctuaire, la nuée remplit la maison du Seigneur, et, à cause d’elle, les prêtres durent interrompre le service divin: la gloire du Seigneur remplissait la maison du Seigneur! Alors Salomon s’écria: « Le Seigneur déclare demeurer dans la nuée obscure. Et maintenant, je t’ai construit, Seigneur, une maison somptueuse, un lieu où tu habiteras éternellement. »

En ce temps-là, après la traversée, abordant à Génésareth Jésus et ses disciples accostèrent. Ils sortirent de la barque, et aussitôt les gens reconnurent Jésus: ils parcoururent toute la région, et se mirent à apporter les malades sur des brancards là où l’on apprenait que Jésus se trouvait. Et dans tous les endroits où il se rendait, dans les villages, les villes ou les campagnes, on déposait les infirmes sur les places. Ils le suppliaient de leur laisser toucher ne serait-ce que la frange de son manteau. Et tous ceux qui la touchèrent étaient sauvés.

Méditation
À travers la péricope de l’évangile selon Marc, nous découvrons Jésus en plein ministère apostolique de la prédication du Royaume des cieux (Mc 1, 15). Cette prédication s’accompagne des signes ou des miracles, lesquels ont pour finalité de susciter la foi des fidèles en Jésus, le Fils de Dieu (Jn 20, 30-31). Apprenant justement que Jésus accomplit des signes merveilleux, les gens accourent vers lui, avec des malades, pour chercher la guérison. Tous ceux qui le suppliaient et touchaient ne fut-ce que la frange de son manteau, étaient guéris. Oui, Jésus n’a pas changé. Il est éternellement puissant et continue d’agir. Allons à lui de tout cœur, cherchons-le et supplions-le, il changera notre situation.

He was a Briton who came to Ireland with Saint Patrick, his uncle. He was ordained in Ardagh. He is one of the earliest Irish saints and gave the religious veil to Saint Brigid.

First reading : 1 Kings 8:1-7, 9-13
Solomon called the elders of Israel together in Jerusalem to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord up from the Citadel of David, which is Zion. All the men of Israel assembled round King Solomon in the month of Ethanim, at the time of the feast (that is, the seventh month), and the priests took up the ark and the Tent of Meeting with all the sacred vessels that were in it. In the presence of the ark, King Solomon and all Israel sacrificed sheep and oxen, countless, innumerable. The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, in the Debir of the Temple, that is, in the Holy of Holies, under the cherubs’ wings. For there where the ark was placed the cherubs spread out their wings and sheltered the ark and its shafts. There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets Moses had placed in it at Horeb, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord had made with the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt; they are still there today. Now when the priests came out of the sanctuary, the cloud filled the Temple of the Lord, and because of the cloud the priests could no longer perform their duties: the glory of the Lord filled the Lord’s Temple. Then Solomon said: ‘The Lord has chosen to dwell in the thick cloud. Yes, I have built you a dwelling, a place for you to live in forever.’

Meditation
The dedication of the temple seals the promise of building God a place of rest. God accepted the dwelling and manifested His presence. Each of us has a duty to build God a befitting dwelling place, a temple that needs to be built with more than bricks. We must begin with the spiritual temple which is our hearts and lives. The temple of the Lord in Jerusalem served as a monument of great spiritual renewal and so a lot of work was put in to set it up. We must realize that we must necessarily put in some work and do so constantly if we must adorn our hearts to the point where the Lord will be pleased to make a dwelling in us.

1ère lecture : Is 6, 1-2a.3-8
L’année de la mort du roi Ozias, je vis le Seigneur qui siégeait sur un trône très élevé ; les pans de son manteau remplissaient le Temple. Des séraphins se tenaient au-dessus de lui. Ils se criaient l’un à l’autre : « Saint ! Saint ! Saint, le Seigneur de l’univers ! Toute la terre est remplie de sa gloire. » Les pivots des portes se mirent à trembler à la voix de celui qui criait, et le Temple se remplissait de fumée. Je dis alors : « Malheur à moi ! je suis perdu, car je suis un homme aux lèvres impures, j’habite au milieu d’un peuple aux lèvres impures : et mes yeux ont vu le Roi, le Seigneur de l’univers ! » L’un des séraphins vola vers moi, tenant un charbon brûlant qu’il avait pris avec des pinces sur l’autel. Il l’approcha de ma bouche et dit : « Ceci a touché tes lèvres, et maintenant ta faute est enlevée, ton péché est pardonné. » J’entendis alors la voix du Seigneur qui disait : « Qui enverrai-je ? qui sera notre messager ? » Et j’ai répondu : « Me voici : envoie-moi ! »
Psaume : Ps 137 (138), 1-2a, 2bc-3, 4-5, 7c-8
R/ Je te chante, Seigneur, en présence des anges. (cf. Ps 137, 1c)
1. De tout mon cœur, Seigneur, je te rends grâce : tu as entendu les paroles de ma bouche. Je te chante en présence des anges, vers ton temple sacré, je me prosterne.
2. Je rends grâce à ton nom pour ton amour et ta vérité, car tu élèves, au-dessus de tout, ton nom et ta parole. Le jour où tu répondis à mon appel, tu fis grandir en mon âme la force.
3. Tous les rois de la terre te rendent grâce quand ils entendent les paroles de ta bouche. Ils chantent les chemins du Seigneur : « Qu’elle est grande, la gloire du Seigneur ! »

2ème lecture : 1 Co 15, 1-11
Frères, je vous rappelle la Bonne Nouvelle que je vous ai annoncée ; cet Évangile, vous l’avez reçu ; c’est en lui que vous tenez bon, c’est par lui que vous serez sauvés si vous le gardez tel que je vous l’ai annoncé ; autrement, c’est pour rien que vous êtes devenus croyants. Avant tout, je vous ai transmis ceci, que j’ai moi-même reçu : le Christ est mort pour nos péchés conformément aux Écritures, et il fut mis au tombeau ; il est ressuscité le troisième jour conformément aux Écritures, il est apparu à Pierre, puis aux Douze ; ensuite il est apparu à plus de cinq cents frères à la fois – la plupart sont encore vivants, et quelques-uns sont endormis dans la mort –, ensuite il est apparu à Jacques, puis à tous les Apôtres. Et en tout dernier lieu, il est même apparu à l’avorton que je suis. Car moi, je suis le plus petit des Apôtres, je ne suis pas digne d’être appelé Apôtre, puisque j’ai persécuté l’Église de Dieu. Mais ce que je suis, je le suis par la grâce de Dieu, et sa grâce, venant en moi, n’a pas été stérile. Je me suis donné de la peine plus que tous les autres ; à vrai dire, ce n’est pas moi, c’est la grâce de Dieu avec moi. Bref, qu’il s’agisse de moi ou des autres, voilà ce que nous proclamons, voilà ce que vous croyez.

Évangile : Lc 5, 1-11
En ce temps-là, la foule se pressait autour de Jésus pour écouter la parole de Dieu, tandis qu’il se tenait au bord du lac de Génésareth. Il vit deux barques qui se trouvaient au bord du lac ; les pêcheurs en étaient descendus et lavaient leurs filets. Jésus monta dans une des barques qui appartenait à Simon, et lui demanda de s’écarter un peu du rivage. Puis il s’assit et, de la barque, il enseignait les foules. Quand il eut fini de parler, il dit à Simon : « Avance au large, et jetez vos filets pour la pêche. » Simon lui répondit : « Maître, nous avons peiné toute la nuit sans rien prendre ; mais, sur ta parole, je vais jeter les filets. » Et l’ayant fait, ils capturèrent une telle quantité de poissons que leurs filets allaient se déchirer. Ils firent signe à leurs compagnons de l’autre barque de venir les aider. Ceux-ci vinrent, et ils remplirent les deux barques, à tel point qu’elles enfonçaient. à cette vue, Simon-Pierre tomba aux genoux de Jésus, en disant : « Éloigne-toi de moi, Seigneur, car je suis un homme pécheur. » En effet, un grand effroi l’avait saisi, lui et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, devant la quantité de poissons qu’ils avaient pêchés ; et de même Jacques et Jean, fils de Zébédée, les associés de Simon. Jésus dit à Simon : « Sois sans crainte, désormais ce sont des hommes que tu prendras. » Alors ils ramenèrent les barques au rivage et, laissant tout, ils le suivirent.

Méditation
Chers frères et sœurs dans le Christ, l’évangile de ce jour nous donne de contempler l’épisode de la pêche miraculeuse qui appelle les Apôtres ou les prédicateurs de la Bonne Nouvelle à ne jamais se décourager face aux insuccès ou échecs rencontrés dans la mission. Dans notre mission reçue de l’Eglise, Jésus ne nous abandonne pas. Il est toujours à nos côtés et nous demande d’avancer aux larges. Il nous appelle par notre nom et nous associe à sa mission de salut. Désormais, il veut, à travers nous, nos paroles et notre témoignage, que les hommes soient sauvés. Soyons animés du courage, de la confiance et de l’élan missionnaire à l’exemple de saint Paul, le « plus petit des Apôtres ».

Second reading : 1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Gospel : Luke 5:1-11
Jesus was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressing round him listening to the word of God, when he caught sight of two boats close to the bank. The fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats – it was Simon’s – and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. Meditation
The Lord does not seek qualified people to do his work. Rather, he qualifies those he calls; hence the words, “Do not be afraid; from now on it is men you will catch.” In the life of Paul we see the doubt and fear of being unqualified, and the power of God to work with anyone and to build him up. Paul was built into a strong voice to take the Gospel to the gentiles. Isaiah had the same experience, as well as Simon Peter. God does not need us to be perfect for the job but he need us be determined to be faithful followers. Let us acknowledge our unworthiness, inadequacies AND SINFULNESS BEFORE God, and yet, pledge ourselves to His services.

She was martyred at Catania in Sicily during the persecution of Decius (250-253). She is mentioned in the Roman Canon of the Mass.

King Solomon went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, since that was the greatest of the high places – Solomon offered a thousand holocausts on that altar. God said, ‘Ask what you would like me to give you.’ Solomon replied, ‘You showed great kindness to your servant David, my father, when he lived his life before you in faithfulness and justice and integrity of heart; you have continued this great kindness to him by allowing a son of his to sit on his throne today. Meditation
Solomon’s request from God goes against what many of us would have asked for or even ask for now (good health, financial breakthrough, etc.) Solomon asked for the wisdom to know right from wrong: he was king, so what else could he have asked for? Knowing what is important in your life helps shape your prayer request. As king Solomon had all power as it were, but then knew he needed something no kingly power could command: God’s wisdom and help. Indeed, what will be the outcome of our lives if we do not give first place just to right judgement and proper consideration of right and wrong?

Meditation
Looking at the life of David, we see that he is just as ordinary as anyone, with sins and weaknesses. However, something stands out about David; he never denied his sinfulness, and he saw himself for who he was each time he was confronted for his sins. David was the man after God’s own heart for reasons of his doggedness to reconnect with God at all times. The righteous is not one who is incapable or falling from grace but he is the one who fights with all he has not to and to get up after a fall. We are called to constant repentance and eagerness to remain united with the Lord acknowledging our sinfulness and clinging to His grace and mercy.

1ère lecture : Si 47, 2-11
Dans le sacrifice de communion, on met à part la graisse des animaux offerts à Dieu ; ainsi David a été mis à part entre les fils d’Israël. Il a joué avec les lions comme si c’étaient des chevreaux, et avec les ours comme avec des agneaux. N’était-il pas tout jeune quand il a tué le géant et supprimé la honte de son peuple, lorsqu’il lança la pierre de sa fronde et abattit l’arrogance de Goliath ? Il invoqua le Seigneur Très-Haut qui a mis dans sa main la vigueur pour supprimer le puissant guerrier et pour exalter la force de son peuple. C’est pourquoi on lui a fait gloire des dizaines de milliers qu’il a tués : on l’a célébré en bénissant le Seigneur quand on lui a donné la glorieuse couronne royale. En effet, il a détruit les ennemis alentour, il a anéanti ses adversaires philistins, il a détruit leur force comme on le voit encore aujourd’hui. Dans tout ce qu’il a fait, il a célébré la louange du Saint, du Très-Haut, en proclamant sa gloire. De tout son cœur, il a chanté les psaumes, il a aimé son Créateur. Devant l’autel, il a placé des chantres, et leur voix rendit les mélodies plus douces ; chaque jour ils loueront Dieu par leurs chants. Il a donné de l’éclat aux fêtes, il a donné une parfaite splendeur aux solennités, pour que le saint nom du Seigneur soit célébré, et que les chants retentissent dans le sanctuaire dès le matin. Le Seigneur a enlevé les péchés de David, il a pour toujours exalté sa force, il a fondé sur lui l’Alliance avec sa dynastie, le trône de gloire d’Israël.

1. Notre Dieu a des chemins sans reproche, la parole du Seigneur est sans alliage, il est un bouclier pour qui s’abrite en lui. C’est le Dieu qui m’emplit de vaillance.

En ce temps-là, comme le nom de Jésus devenait célèbre, le roi Hérode en entendit parler. On disait: «C’est Jean, celui qui baptisait : il est ressuscité d’entre les morts, et voilà pourquoi des miracles se réalisent par lui.» Certains disaient: «C’est le prophète Élie.» D’autres disaient encore: «C’est un prophète comme ceux de jadis.» Hérode entendait ces propos et disait: «Celui que j’ai fait décapiter, Jean, le voilà ressuscité!» Car c’était lui, Hérode, qui avait donné l’ordre d’arrêter Jean et de l’enchaîner dans la prison, à cause d’Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe, que lui-même avait prise pour épouse. En effet, Jean lui disait: «Tu n’as pas le droit de prendre la femme de ton frère.» Hérodiade en voulait donc à Jean, et elle cherchait à le faire mourir. Mais elle n’y arrivait pas parce que Hérode avait peur de Jean : il savait que c’était un homme juste et saint, et il le protégeait; quand il l’avait entendu, il était très embarrassé; cependant il l’écoutait avec plaisir. Or, une occasion favorable se présenta quand, le jour de son anniversaire, Hérode fit un dîner pour ses dignitaires, pour les chefs de l’armée et pour les notables de la Galilée. La fille d’Hérodiade fit son entrée et dansa. Elle plut à Hérode et à ses convives. Le roi dit à la jeune fille: «Demande-moi ce que tu veux, et je te le donnerai.» Et il lui fit ce serment: «Tout ce que tu me demanderas, je te le donnerai, même si c’est la moitié de mon royaume.» Elle sortit alors pour dire à sa mère: «Qu’est-ce que je vais demander?» Hérodiade répondit: «La tête de Jean, celui qui baptise.» Aussitôt la jeune fille s’empressa de retourner auprès du roi, et lui fit cette demande : « Je veux que, tout de suite, tu me donnes sur un plat la tête de Jean le Baptiste.» Le roi fut vivement contrarié; mais à cause du serment et des convives, il ne voulut pas lui opposer un refus. Aussitôt il envoya un garde avec l’ordre d’apporter la tête de Jean. Le garde s’en alla décapiter Jean dans la prison. Il apporta la tête sur un plat, la donna à la jeune fille, et la jeune fille la donna à sa mère. Ayant appris cela, les disciples de Jean vinrent prendre son corps et le déposèrent dans un tombeau.

Méditation
Le livre de Ben-Sirac le Sage fait éloge du roi David qu’il souligne les hauts faits et la piété envers Dieu. David, au-delà de son péché (II S 11, 1-27), fut un modèle d’attachement au Seigneur, d’humilité et de piété envers Dieu ; un modèle que nous sommes appelés à imiter sur le chemin de la sainteté. L’évangile, tout en faisant mention de la renommée de Jésus, parle du martyre de Jean Baptiste. La leçon fondamentale est de savoir que celui-ci est mort à cause de sa mission prophétique dans la cour royale : celle de ne proclamer rien que la vérité. Jean-Baptiste n’a pas sacrifié la vérité, mais il est mort pour la vérité. Chrétiens, nous sommes des prophètes de notre temps. Soyons des prophètes courageux et capables d’annoncer la vérité.

Meditation
David, as his life comes to an end, speaks words of wisdom to his son, connecting him deeply to God and showing him the way to a life of success. He shows him the source of his strength if he must succeed his father and carry on his father’s legacy rightly. David not only teaches his son what he knows, but also gives him words that would guide him away from his father’s mistakes and regrets. For the African, a man’s last words or the wishes of a dying person are never taken lightly. This is important. What legacy are we building for our children? How well do we steer them away from the sins we committed, and what measures do we take to help them make the right choices in life?

Tu observeras ses décrets, ses commandements, ses ordonnances et ses édits, selon ce qui est écrit dans la loi de Moïse. Le règne de David sur Israël avait duré quarante ans: il avait régné sept ans à Hébron, et trente-trois ans à Jérusalem. Salomon prit possession du trône de David son père, et sa royauté fut solidement établie.

Prière après la communion
Nous avons été fortifiés, Seigneur, par le sacrement de notre Rédemption ; permets que cet aliment de salut éternel nous fasse progresser dans la vraie foi. Par Jésus.
Méditation
En s’adressant à son fils Salomon avant sa mort, le roi David, dans la première lecture, nous fait des recommandations capitales pour la vie. Il nous invite au courage et à la fidélité à la loi divine dans le contexte actuel, marqué par la crise d’identité et sociale. Dans l’évangile, Jésus appelle les Douze qu’il avait choisis et les envoie en mission, celle de révéler le visage miséricordieux de Dieu et de communiquer la joie de l’Evangile. Cette mission, c’est celle qu’il nous confie aujourd’hui. Elle se doit d’être partagée pour raison d’efficacité et va de pair avec la promotion intégrale de l’homme. Que chacun de nous en prenne conscience et se laisse guider par l’Esprit Saint pour son accomplissement.
