Cela se réalise si vous restez solidement fondés dans la foi, sans vous détourner de l’espérance que vous avez reçue en écoutant l’Évangile proclamé à toute créature sous le ciel. Seigneur de la Loi
Les lois sont faites mais les juges doivent interpréter comment les lois doivent être appliquées. Cela signifie que la loi en elle-même n’est pas suffisante et la seule façon de l’appliquer est de comprendre ce qu’elle cherche à réaliser. La loi est froide lorsqu’elle est appliquée dans le vide. Faisant appel aux pharisiens pour considérer ce qui est au cœur de la loi : l’amour de Dieu et du prochain (Rom 13 :8 -10), Jésus l’illustre en citant l’exemple de David. Là où il y a de l’amour, il n’est pas nécessaire de multiplier les règles. La multiplication des règles n’est nécessaire que lorsque les gens, consumés par l’égoïsme et la cupidité, doivent être forcés d’agir avec préoccupation. Mais quand nous agissons pour le bien d’un autre, alors la loi a été accomplie.

Au 4e siècle, à l’époque de la persécution de Dioclétien, alors qu’elle se rendait au puits pour y chercher de l’eau, elle croisa un cortège de moines et de vierges arrêtés et conduits par la police à Alexandrie en vue d’être mis à mort. Proférant plusieurs injures contre les dieux, elle se fit introduire de manière forcée dans le cortège alors que les policiers la repoussaient. Elle eut la tête tranchée.

Il est aussi la tête du corps, la tête de l’Église : c’est lui le commencement, le premier-né d’entre les morts, afin qu’il ait en tout la primauté. Car Dieu a jugé bon qu’habite en lui toute plénitude et que tout, par le Christ, lui soit enfin réconcilié, faisant la paix par le sang de sa Croix, la paix pour tous les êtres sur la terre et dans le ciel.

L’Appel au Renouveau
Pour faire partie du nouveau, nous devons laisser aller l’ancien. Nous avons l’habitude de prendre les enseignements du Christ et de les intégrer dans notre monde familier, croyant que le but du Christ est de bénir notre ancienne façon de vivre. Nos vieilles habitudes, les lois faites par l’homme, les coutumes et les pratiques nous maintiennent en esclavage. Accepter les voies de Jésus signifie que nous devons abandonner nos anciennes voies et pratiques familières et accepter la liberté qu’Il nous donne. Le vin nouveau et le drap neuf représentent la bonne nouvelle que Jésus est venu partager avec nous. Rappelons-nous que le tissu neuf que Jésus donne n’est pas un matériau pour raccommodage.

Born in Macedonia, she became a missionary in India. Teresa had an encounter, which she heard Christ tell her, “Come be my light.” She formed the Missionaries of Charity, who set up hospitals and homes for the dying. In 1979 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. Mother Teresa died in 1997 and was beatified in 2002.

Meditation
The claim of the scribes and Pharisees in today’s Gospel prompts me to recognise that in numerous situations, my ego has the potential to shape my perspective, allowing me to see only what I prefer or choose to see. I acknowledge how my selfishness, fueled by negative thinking, can distort my perception of sacred events, leading me to perceive the proverbial “glass of water as half empty” or deem ‘this student’s progress from 7% to 20% as hopeless.’ Good Jesus, I implore you to give me a positive mindset at all times. Remind me that with You by my side, every situation can be transformed for the better, and help me to overcome the tendency to focus on negativity.

À cette vue, Simon-Pierre tomba aux genoux de Jésus, en disant : « Éloigne-toi de moi, Seigneur, car je suis un homme pécheur. » En effet, un grand effroi l’avait saisi, lui et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, devant la quantité de poissons qu’ils avaient pêchés; et de même Jacques et Jean, fils de Zébédée, les associés de Simon. Parce que tu le dis…
Quand nous entendons la voix de Dieu et qu’elle est complètement contraire à ce que nous voulons ou pensons, et est à peine en notre faveur, sommes-nous capables de dire : «Parce que Tu le dis», et de poursuivre malgré tout ? Ce sont des paroles de foi et de confiance. La seule garantie est qu’Il l’a dit, et Sa parole est vraie. Pierre n’a aucune assurance qu’il fera une prise ; au contraire, il est sûr que s’il rejette le filet, ce sera une entreprise perdue. La seule raison pour laquelle il fait ce qu’il fait, c’est qu’il fait confiance à Jésus. Si quelqu’un d’autre le disait, il n’agirait pas, mais puisque c’est Jésus, il ne peut pas dire non. Nous devons également arriver à un point de confiance.

Meditation
The reassurance from Jesus, “Do not be afraid,” serves as a soothing balm for my nerves. I have been told that this command, urging us not to be afraid, appears well over 300 times in the Scriptures. If I were to actively seek them out, I could potentially discover at least one phrase every day in the Bible to read, providing a constant source of solace to quell my fears and alleviate stress and fatigue. Admittedly, I am not sure I have uncovered all these reassuring commands in the Bible yet!

En ce temps-là, Jésus quitta la synagogue de Capharnaüm et entra dans la maison de Simon. Or, la belle-mère de Simon était oppressée par une forte fièvre, et on demanda à Jésus de faire quelque chose pour elle. Il se pencha sur elle, menaça la fièvre, et la fièvre la quitta. À l’instant même, la femme se leva et elle les servait. Au coucher du soleil, tous ceux qui avaient des malades atteints de diverses infirmités les lui amenèrent. Et Jésus, imposant les mains à chacun d’eux, les guérissait. Et même des démons sortaient de beaucoup d’entre eux en criant : « C’est toi le Fils de Dieu!» Mais Jésus les menaçait et leur interdisait de parler parce qu’ils savaient, eux, que le Christ, c’était lui. Quand il fit jour, Jésus sortit et s’en alla dans un endroit désert. Les foules le cherchaient ; elles arrivèrent jusqu’à lui, et elles le retenaient pour l’empêcher de les quitter. Mais il leur dit : « Aux autres villes aussi, il faut que j’annonce la Bonne Nouvelle du règne de Dieu, car c’est pour cela que j’ai été envoyé. » Et il proclamait l’Évangile dans les synagogues du pays des Juifs.

Au coucher du soleil
«Faîtes du foin pendant que le soleil brille,» dit le proverbe. Et qu’en est-il au coucher du soleil ? Le lever du soleil de la vie est le moment où tout semble bien se passer ; nous sommes énergiques et en bonne santé. Le coucher du soleil nous trouve souvent faibles et à bout de ressources. Au coucher du soleil, nous venons à Jésus ; non seulement nous-mêmes, mais nous portons avec nous tous ceux dont le «soleil» a disparu dans leur vie. Le coucher du soleil de la vie représente nos ennuis, maladies et douleurs. Nous venons à Jésus pour la force et la guérison quand nous sommes secs, faibles, malades et fatigués. Jésus nous montre quoi faire au lever du soleil (verset 42). Pour nous donner de la lumière pour la journée, laissons le «Fils» se lever en nous dans la prière. N’oubliez pas, le pouvoir de guérison de Jésus est toujours présent de nos jours.

He was elected Pope on 3 September 590, the first monk to be elected to this office. He wrote extensively on pastoral care, spirituality, and morals, and designated himself “servant of the servants of God.” He died on 12 March 604.

O God, who care for your people with gentleness and rule them in love, through the intercession of Pope Saint Gregory, endow, we pray, with a spirit of wisdom those to whom you have given authority to govern, that the flourishing of a holy flock may become the eternal joy of the shepherds. First reading : Colossians 1:1-8
From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy to the saints in Colossae, our faithful brothers in Christ: Grace and peace to you from God our Father. We have never failed to remember you in our prayers and to give thanks for you to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, ever since we heard about your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you show towards all the saints because of the hope, which is stored up for you in heaven. It is only recently that you heard of this, when it was announced in the message of the truth. The Good News which has reached you is spreading all over the world and producing the same results as it has among you ever since the day when you heard about God’s grace and understood what this really is. Epaphras, who taught you, is one of our closest fellow workers and a faithful deputy for us as Christ’s servant, and it was he who told us all about your love in the Spirit.

Gospel : Luke 4:38-44
Leaving the synagogue, Jesus went to Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever and they asked him to do something for her. Leaning over her he rebuked the fever and it left her. And she immediately got up and began to wait on them. At sunset all those who had friends suffering from diseases of one kind or another brought them to him, and laying his hands on each he cured them. Devils too came out of many people, howling, ‘You are the Son of God.’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ. When daylight came he left the house and made his way to a lonely place. The crowds went to look for him, and when they had caught up with him they wanted to prevent him leaving them, but he answered, ‘I must proclaim the Good News of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do.’ And he continued his preaching in the synagogues of Judaea.
Prayer over the Offerings
Grant our supplication, we pray, O Lord, that this sacrifice we present in celebration of Saint Gregory may be for our good, since through its offering you have loosed the offences of all the world. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
“We have never failed to remember you in our prayers.” What a joy, what happiness it brings to hear that someone has been praying for me! Reflecting on this, I find myself contemplating whether I have always prayed for the well-being of others, particularly those with whom I do not agree. Moreover, when I meet people who tell me: “Please greet your wife, children, those in your household for me,” have I ever remembered or cared to deliver such heartfelt messages upon returning home?

1ère lecture : 1 Th 5, 1-6.9-11
Pour ce qui est des temps et des moments de la venue du Seigneur, vous n’avez pas besoin, frères, que je vous en parle dans ma lettre. Vous savez très bien que le jour du Seigneur vient comme un voleur dans la nuit. Quand les gens diront : « Quelle paix ! Quelle tranquillité ! », c’est alors que, tout à coup, la catastrophe s’abattra sur eux, comme les douleurs sur la femme enceinte : ils ne pourront pas y échapper. Mais vous, frères, comme vous n’êtes pas dans les ténèbres, ce jour ne vous surprendra pas comme un voleur. En effet, vous êtes tous des fils de la lumière, des fils du jour ; nous n’appartenons pas à la nuit et aux ténèbres. Alors, ne restons pas endormis comme les autres, mais soyons vigilants et restons sobres. Car Dieu ne nous a pas destinés à subir la colère, mais à entrer en possession du salut par notre Seigneur Jésus Christ, mort pour nous afin de nous faire vivre avec lui, que nous soyons en train de veiller ou de dormir. Ainsi, réconfortez-vous mutuellement et édifiez-vous l’un l’autre, comme vous le faites déjà.

R/ J’en suis sûr, je verrai les bontés du Seigneur sur la terre des vivants.
Le Seigneur est ma lumière et mon salut ; de qui aurais-je crainte ? Le Seigneur est le rempart de ma vie; devant qui tremblerais-je ?
J’ai demandé une chose au Seigneur, la seule que je cherche : habiter la maison du Seigneur tous les jours de ma vie, pour admirer le Seigneur dans sa beauté et m’attacher à son temple.
J’en suis sûr, je verrai les bontés du Seigneur sur la terre des vivants, « Espère le Seigneur, sois fort et prends courage ; espère le Seigneur. »

En ce temps-là, Jésus descendit à Capharnaüm, ville de Galilée, et il y enseignait, le jour du sabbat. On était frappé par son enseignement car sa parole était pleine d’autorité. Or, il y avait dans la synagogue un homme possédé par l’esprit d’un démon impur, qui se mit à crier d’une voix forte : « Ah ! Que nous veux-tu, Jésus de Nazareth ? Es-tu venu pour nous perdre ? Je sais qui tu es : tu es le Saint de Dieu. » Jésus le menaça: « Silence ! Sors de cet homme. » Alors le démon projeta l’homme en plein milieu et sortit de lui sans lui faire aucun mal. Tous furent saisis d’effroi et ils se disaient entre eux : « Quelle est cette parole ? Il commande avec autorité et puissance aux esprits impurs, et ils sortent ! » Et la réputation de Jésus se propageait dans toute la région.

Paroles d’autorité
Il y a un dicton qui dit que les paroles sont bon marché, mais ce n’est pas le cas avec Jésus. Jésus démontre non seulement par Ses enseignements mais aussi par sa capacité à chasser les démons par Sa parole, que les mots sont puissants. Il n’utilise pas seulement des mots ; Il Est le Verbe par lequel le monde a été créé. Les mots sont puissants, mais ils perdent leur puissance lorsqu’ils ne sont pas soutenus par des actions ou en conformité avec le comportement de l’auteur ; ils perdent leur puissance lorsqu’ils manquent de vérité en eux. Lorsque nos paroles se connectent avec l’Auteur de la vie, qui est le Chemin, la Vérité et la Vie (Jean 14:6), elles manifestent la puissance qui réside dans nos langues. Dieu a créé par la puissance de Sa Parole ; nous pouvons également créer par la puissance de nos mots.

He was born in Montréal on 3 April 1758 and ordained priest in 1783. In the face of persecution he took shelter with the Eudist Fathers in Paris. He was executed in 1792 together with almost 200 other priests. He was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 17 October 1926.

It is when people are saying, ‘How quiet and peaceful it is’ that the worst suddenly happens, as suddenly as labour pains come on a pregnant woman; and there will be no way for anybody to evade it. But it is not as if you live in the dark, my brothers, for that Day to overtake you like a thief. No, you are all sons of light and sons of the day: we do not belong to the night or to darkness, so we should not go on sleeping, as everyone else does, but stay wide awake and sober. God never meant us to experience the Retribution, but to win salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that, alive or dead, we should still live united to him. So give encouragement to each other, and keep strengthening one another, as you do already.

In the synagogue there was a man who was possessed by the spirit of an unclean devil, and it shouted at the top of its voice, ‘Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus said sharply, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the devil, throwing the man down in front of everyone, went out of him without hurting him at all. Astonishment seized them and they were all saying to one another, ‘What teaching! He gives orders to unclean spirits with authority and power and they come out.’ And reports of him went all through the surrounding countryside.

Meditation
“I know who you are: the Holy One of God.” This affirmation has the potential to lead me astray! Pausing for a moment, I ask myself: Who is making this declaration about Jesus in this particular context? I am confronted with a disheartening reality: in the past, and even now, I am still often carried away by just anyone who makes open declarations for Jesus! I follow without heeding Jesus’ warning that ‘not everyone who shouts “Lord! Lord!” is genuinely on the path to Heaven!’ Upon revisiting Paul’s words in the First Reading: “Give encouragement to each other, and keep strengthening one another,’’ I am tempted to ponder whether all the ‘reports of Him (Jesus)’ that ‘went all through the surrounding countryside,’ are all positive and encouraging. Reflecting on my conduct as a follower of Christ, I question whether it has consistently uplifted and encouraged God’s other children.

Saint Giles was a seventh century Athenian of noble birth. His piety and learning made him an object of such admiration. He spent many years in solitude with God. He founded a monastery with an excellent discipline therein. St. Giles died in about the year 724.

Jesus came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up to read and they handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll he found the place where it is written: The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour. He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to speak to them, ‘This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen.’ And he won the approval of all, and they were astonished by the gracious words that came from his lips. They said, ‘This is Joseph’s son, surely?’ But he replied, ‘No doubt you will quote me the saying, “Physician, heal yourself” and tell me, “We have heard all that happened in Capernaum, do the same here in your own countryside.”’ And he went on, ‘I tell you solemnly, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country. ‘There were many widows in Israel, I can assure you, in Elijah’s day, when heaven remained shut for three years and six months and a great famine raged throughout the land, but Elijah was not sent to any one of these: he was sent to a widow at Zarephath, a Sidonian town. And in the prophet Elisha’s time there were many lepers in Israel, but none of these was cured, except the Syrian, Naaman.’ When they heard this everyone in the synagogue was enraged. They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of the town; and they took him up to the brow of the hill their town was built on, intending to throw him down the cliff, but he slipped through the crowd and walked away.

Meditation
This profound Gospel has resonated with me now for many years. If this were to unfold as a theatrical play, I wonder which of the actors I would love to be. Would it be the scroll, from which Jesus reads? Or the assistant graciously handing the scroll to Jesus? Or one of the individuals in the synagogue, who is fixing his eyes on Jesus with admiration, only to later join the crowd in fury, leading Jesus to the brow of the hill with the intent to stone Him? Alternatively, I might act the role of Jesus, fearlessly speaking the truth as it is, and confronting the impending storm. Lord Jesus, guide me to steadfastly stand by Your side, regardless of how many may oppose the profound truths You proclaim for our spiritual growth.
