Annonciation du Seigneur
« Dieu a tant aimé le monde qu’il a donné son Fils unique pour que quiconque croit en lui ait la vie éternelle, et pour que le monde soit sauvé par lui » (Jn 3,16). Voilà pourquoi le Verbe s’est fait chair. Le Fils de Dieu s’est fait homme pour que les hommes puissent devenir enfants de Dieu. Mais Dieu n’impose pas ses dons ; il nous respecte ; il nous demande de croire en son amour et d’accueillir librement ses dons, comme des signes de cet amour sauveur. A l’heure même où va se réaliser le mystère de l’Incarnation, Il attend le consentement de celle qu’il a choisie pour être la Mère de son Fils. La foi d’une humble Vierge accueille le Sauveur du monde. Pour accueillir le salut gratuit que Jésus apporte, chacun de nous doit imiter la foi de Marie.

Soyez dans la joie, vous qui cherchez Dieu. Cherchez le Seigneur et sa force, sans vous lasser, recherchez son visage.
Prière d’ouverture
Nous t’adressons, Seigneur, cette humble prière: que tes serviteurs se purifient dans la pénitence et s’appliquent à faire ce qui est bon; donne-leur de rester dociles à ta volonté et d’arriver sans encombre aux fêtes de Pâques. Par Jésus Christ.
Lectures de la messe
Première lecture (Is 7, 10-14)
En ces jours-là, le Seigneur parla ainsi au roi Acaz : « Demande pour toi un signe de la part du Seigneur ton Dieu, au fond du séjour des morts ou sur les sommets, là-haut. » Acaz répondit : « Non, je n’en demanderai pas, je ne mettrai pas le Seigneur à l’épreuve. » Isaïe dit alors : « Écoutez, maison de David ! Il ne vous suffit donc pas de fatiguer les hommes : il faut encore que vous fatiguiez mon Dieu ! C’est pourquoi le Seigneur lui-même vous donnera un signe : Voici que la vierge est enceinte, elle enfantera un fils, qu’elle appellera Emmanuel, car Dieu est avec nous. » – Parole du Seigneur.
Psaume (Ps 39 (40), 7-8a, 8b-9, 10,11)
R/ Me voici, Seigneur, je viens faire ta volonté. (cf. Ps 39, 8a.9a)
Tu ne voulais ni offrande ni sacrifice, tu as ouvert mes oreilles ; tu ne demandais ni holocauste ni victime, alors j’ai dit : « Voici, je viens. « Dans le livre, est écrit pour moi ce que tu veux que je fasse. Mon Dieu, voilà ce que j’aime : ta loi me tient aux entrailles. » J’annonce la justice dans la grande assemblée ; vois, je ne retiens pas mes lèvres, Seigneur, tu le sais. Je n’ai pas enfoui ta justice au fond de mon cœur, je n’ai pas caché ta fidélité, ton salut ; j’ai dit ton amour et ta vérité à la grande assemblée.
Deuxième lecture (He 10, 4-10)
Frères, il est impossible que du sang de taureaux et de boucs enlève les péchés. Aussi, en entrant dans le monde, le Christ dit : Tu n’as voulu ni sacrifice ni offrande, mais tu m’as formé un corps. Tu n’as pas agréé les holocaustes ni les sacrifices pour le péché ; alors, j’ai dit : Me voici, je suis venu, mon Dieu, pour faire ta volonté, ainsi qu’il est écrit de moi dans le Livre. Le Christ commence donc par dire : Tu n’as pas voulu ni agréé les sacrifices et les offrandes, les holocaustes et les sacrifices pour le péché, ceux que la Loi prescrit d’offrir. Puis il déclare : Me voici, je suis venu pour faire ta volonté. Ainsi, il supprime le premier état de choses pour établir le second. Et c’est grâce à cette volonté que nous sommes sanctifiés, par l’offrande que Jésus Christ a faite de son corps, une fois pour toutes. – Parole du Seigneur.

Évangile (Lc 1, 26-38)
En ce temps-là, l’ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, appelée Nazareth, à une jeune fille vierge, accordée en mariage à un homme de la maison de David, appelé Joseph ; et le nom de la jeune fille était Marie. L’ange entra chez elle et dit : « Je te salue, Comblée-de-grâce, le Seigneur est avec toi. » À cette parole, elle fut toute bouleversée, et elle se demandait ce que pouvait signifier cette salutation. L’ange lui dit alors : « Sois sans crainte, Marie, car tu as trouvé grâce auprès de Dieu. Voici que tu vas concevoir et enfanter un fils ; tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus. Il sera grand, il sera appelé Fils du Très-Haut ; le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David son père ; il régnera pour toujours sur la maison de Jacob, et son règne n’aura pas de fin. » Marie dit à l’ange : « Comment cela va-t-il se faire, puisque je ne connais pas d’homme ? » L’ange lui répondit : « L’Esprit Saint viendra sur toi, et la puissance du Très-Haut te prendra sous son ombre ; c’est pourquoi celui qui va naître sera saint, il sera appelé Fils de Dieu. Or voici que, dans sa vieillesse, Élisabeth, ta parente, a conçu, elle aussi, un fils et en est à son sixième mois, alors qu’on l’appelait la femme stérile. Car rien n’est impossible à Dieu. » Marie dit alors : « Voici la servante du Seigneur ; que tout m’advienne selon ta parole. » Alors l’ange la quitta. – Acclamons la Parole de Dieu.

Sainte Catherine de Suède
Elle appartenait à la famille royale de Suède, par sa mère, sainte Brigitte et par son père Ulf Gudmarson. Elevée dans un couvent, elle en sort pour épouser sagement le noble que l’on lui destine, Edgar Lydersson, qui est un invalide et qu’elle soigna avec grand dévouement.

«Vous tous qui avez soif, venez, voici de l’eau ! dit le Seigneur. Même si vous n’avez pas d’argent, venez et buvez avec joie.»
Prière d’ouverture :
Donne à tes fidèles, Seigneur, en ce temps de pénitence, une vraie générosité à te servir ; qu’ils se disposent ainsi à recevoir dans un cœur purifié l’annonce du mystère pascal et à transmettre au monde la joyeuse nouvelle du salut. Par Jésus Christ.

En ces jours- là, au cours d’une vision reçue du Seigneur, l’homme me fit revenir à l’entrée de la Maison, et voici : sous le seuil de la Maison, de l’eau jaillissait vers l’orient, puisque la façade de la Maison était du côté de l’orient. L’eau descendait de dessous le côté droit de la Maison, au sud de l’autel. L’homme me fit sortir par la porte du nord et me fit faire le tour par l’extérieur, jusqu’à la porte qui fait face à l’orient, et là encore l’eau coulait du côté droit. L’homme s’éloigna vers l’orient, un cordeau à la main, et il mesura une distance de mille coudées; alors il me fit traverser l’eau: j’en avais jusqu’aux chevilles. En tout lieu où parviendra le torrent, tous les animaux pourront vivre et foisonner. Le poisson sera très abondant, car cette eau assainit tout ce qu’elle pénètre, et la vie apparaît en tout lieu où arrive le torrent. Au bord du torrent, sur les deux rives, toutes sortes d’arbres fruitiers pousseront; leur feuillage ne se flétrira pas et leurs fruits ne manqueront pas. Chaque mois ils porteront des fruits nouveaux, car cette eau vient du sanctuaire. Les fruits seront une nourriture, et les feuilles un remède.»

- Dieu est pour nous refuge et force, secours dans la détresse, toujours offert. Nous serons sans crainte si la terre est secouée, si les montagnes s’effondrent au creux de la mer.
- Le Fleuve, ses bras réjouissent la ville de Dieu, la plus sainte des demeures du Très- Haut. Dieu s’y tient : elle est inébranlable; quand renaît le matin, Dieu la secourt.
- Il est avec nous, le Seigneur de l’univers; citadelle pour nous, le Dieu de Jacob! Venez et voyez les actes du Seigneur, il détruit la guerre jusqu’au bout du monde.

Evangile : Jn 5, 1-16
À l’occasion d’une fête juive, Jésus monta à Jérusalem. Or, à Jérusalem, près de la porte des Brebis, il existe une piscine qu’on appelle en hébreu Bethzatha. Elle a cinq colonnades, sous lesquelles étaient couchés une foule de malades, aveugles, boiteux et impotents. Il y avait là un homme qui était malade depuis trente-huit ans. Jésus, le voyant couché là, et apprenant qu’il était dans cet état depuis longtemps, lui dit : « Veux- tu être guéri ? » Le malade lui répondit : « Seigneur, je n’ai personne pour me plonger dans la piscine au moment où l’eau bouillonne; et pendant que j’y vais, un autre descend avant moi. » Jésus lui dit: « Lève- toi, prends ton brancard, et marche. » Et aussitôt l’homme fut guéri. Il prit son brancard : il marchait ! Or, ce jour-là était un jour de sabbat. Les Juifs dirent donc à cet homme que Jésus avait remis sur pied: « C’est le sabbat ! Il ne t’est pas permis de porter ton brancard. » Il leur répliqua: « Celui qui m’a guéri, c’est lui qui m’a dit : “Prends ton brancard, et marche !” » Ils l’interrogèrent : « Quel est l’homme qui t’a dit: “Prends ton brancard, et marche” ? » Mais celui qui avait été rétabli ne savait pas qui c’était; en effet, Jésus s’était éloigné, car il y avait foule à cet endroit. Plus tard, Jésus le retrouve dans le Temple et lui dit : « Te voilà guéri. Ne pèche plus, il pourrait t’arriver quelque chose de pire. » L’homme partit annoncer aux Juifs que c’était Jésus qui l’avait guéri. Et ceux-ci persécutaient Jésus parce qu’il avait fait cela le jour du sabbat.

Nous te présentons, Seigneur, des biens que toi-même nous as donnés : qu’ils te disent notre reconnaissance devant tout ce que ta création nous propose pour assurer notre vie sur la terre ; qu’ils deviennent aussi le remède qui nous guérira et nous fera vivre éternellement. Par Jésus.

Mon berger, c’est le Seigneur : je ne manque de rien ; sur de frais pâturages, il me laisse reposer. Il me mène auprès des eaux tranquilles et me fait revivre.

Gospel: John 5:1-3,5-16
There was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now at the Sheep Pool in Jerusalem there is a building, called Bethzatha in Hebrew, consisting of five porticos; and under these were crowds of sick people – blind, lame, paralysed – waiting for the water to move. One man there had an illness which had lasted thirty-eight years, and when Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had been in this condition for a long time, he said, ‘Do you want to be well again?’ ‘Sir,’ replied the sick man ‘I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is disturbed; and while I am still on the way, someone else gets there before me.’ Jesus said, ‘Get up, pick up your sleeping-mat and walk.’ The man was cured at once, and he picked up his mat and walked away. Now that day happened to be the sabbath, so the Jews said to the man who had been cured, ‘It is the sabbath; you are not allowed to carry your sleeping-mat.’ He replied, ‘But the man who cured me told me, “Pick up your mat and walk.”’ They asked, ‘Who is the man who said to you, “Pick up your mat and walk”?’ The man had no idea who it was, since Jesus had disappeared into the crowd that filled the place. After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said, ‘Now you are well again, be sure not to sin any more, or something worse may happen to you.’ The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had cured him. It was because he did things like this on the sabbath that the Jews began to persecute Jesus.

We offer to you, O Lord, these gifts which you yourself have bestowed; may they attest to your care as Creator for this our mortal life, and effect in us the healing that brings us immortality. Through Christ our Lord.

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose, near restful waters he leads me.
Prayer after Communion
Purify our minds, O Lord, we pray, and renew them with this heavenly Sacrament, that we may find help for our bodies now and likewise in times to come. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Most often we are more concerned with our physical appearance than our spiritual appearance. The man in the gospel who had been sick for thirty eight years had been waiting for a physical healing until he met Jesus. Jesus healed this man and let him know that his ailment was more spiritual than physical. It is just like a man who is infected with HIV virus resulting from an act of fornication. This man is more concerned about the cure to his ailment that repentance from his sins. Which means, if he is cured he will return to his sinning way. Many who are struck with sicknesses pray to regain health not because they want to amend their sinful life but because they wish return to the wayward living. True healing comes in the spirit and not in the body. Once the soul is clean, the body is sanctified.

Saint Victorien
Hunéric, roi des Vandales d’Afrique, demanda à Victorien, le gouverneur de Carthage d’emprisonner les chrétiens qui n’embrasseraient pas l’arianisme, à commencer par lui-même. Il refusa. La réponse de Hunéric fut de le mettre à mort ainsi que 4 riches commerçants : deux frères de la ville d’Aquarège et deux autres marchands nommés Frumence. Ils souffrirent les plus cruelles tortures pour avoir confessé avec constance la foi catholique et reçurent la couronne de gloire.
Saint Turibo de Mogrovejo, évêque
Turibo (vers 1538-1606) était encore laïc quand le roi d’Espagne l’envoya réorganiser l’Eglise du Pérou. Archevêque de Lima à quarante deux ans, il s’efforce de réparer les erreurs et les injustices commises par les conquérants vis-à-vis des Indiens. Il se heurte à la résistance des gouverneurs eux-mêmes ; mais ses adversaires ne peuvent venir à bout de sa patience inébranlable et de sa douce fermeté. Quand il meurt, une réforme profonde était déjà accomplie.

Ainsi parle le Seigneur: Oui, je vais créer un ciel nouveau et une terre nouvelle, on ne se rappellera plus le passé, il ne reviendra plus à l’esprit. Exultez sans fin, réjouissez-vous de ce que je vais créer. Car je crée une Jérusalem de joie, un peuple d’allégresse. Je trouverai mon allégresse en Jérusalem, ma joie en mon peuple. On n’y entendra plus de cris ni de pleurs. On n’y verra plus de nouveau-né emporté en quelques jours, ni d’homme qui ne parvienne pas au bout de sa vieillesse ; le plus jeune mourra centenaire, mourir avant cent ans sera une malédiction. On bâtira des maisons et on y restera, on plantera des vignes et on pourra en manger les fruits.

Evangile : Jn 4, 43-54
Jésus, après ces deux jours chez les Samaritains, partit pour la Galilée. (Lui-même avait attesté qu’un prophète n’est pas honoré dans son propre pays.) Il arriva donc en Galilée ; les Galiléens lui firent bon accueil, car ils avaient vu tout ce qu’il avait fait à Jérusalem pendant la fête de la Pâque, puisqu’ils étaient allés eux aussi à cette fête. Ainsi donc Jésus revint à Cana en Galilée, où il avait changé l’eau en vin. Or, il y avait un fonctionnaire royal, dont le fils était malade à Capharnaüm. Ayant appris que Jésus arrivait de Judée en Galilée, il alla le trouver ; il lui demandait de descendre à Capharnaüm pour guérir son fils qui était mourant. Jésus lui dit : « Vous ne pourrez donc pas croire à moins d’avoir vu des signes et des prodiges ? » Le fonctionnaire royal lui dit : « Seigneur, descends, avant que mon enfant ne meure ! » Jésus lui répond : «Va, ton fils est vivant. » L’homme crut à la parole que Jésus lui avait dite et il partit. Pendant qu’il descendait, ses serviteurs arrivèrent à sa rencontre et lui dirent que son enfant était vivant. Il voulut savoir à quelle heure il s’était trouvé mieux. Ils lui dirent : « C’est hier, au début de l’après-midi, que la fièvre l’a quitté. » Le père se rendit compte que c’était justement l’heure où Jésus lui avait dit : « Ton fils est vivant. » Alors il crut, avec tous les gens de sa maison. Tel est le second signe que Jésus accomplit lorsqu’il revint de Judée en Galilée.

De l’offrande qui t’est consacrée, Seigneur, nous attendons des fruits du salut : débarrasse-nous de tout ce qui doit mourir, renouvelle-nous constamment de ta propre vie. Par Jésus.

St Turibius of Mongrovejo
(1538 – 1606)
He was born in Spain in about 1538 and studied law at the University of Salamanca. He was named bishop of Lima in 1580. He was full of apostolic zeal. He died in Lima on 23 March 1606.

Thus says the Lord: Now I create new heavens and a new earth, and the past will not be remembered, and will come no more to men’s minds. Jesus left Samaria for Galilee. He himself had declared that there is no respect for a prophet in his own country, but on his arrival the Galileans received him well, having seen all that he had done at Jerusalem during the festival which they too had attended. He went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. Now there was a court official there whose son was ill at Capernaum and, hearing that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judaea, he went and asked him to come and cure his son as he was at the point of death. Jesus said, ‘So you will not believe unless you see signs and portents!’ ‘Sir,’ answered the official ‘come down before my child dies.’ ‘Go home,’ said Jesus ‘your son will live.’ The man believed what Jesus had said and started on his way; and while he was still on the journey back his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive. He asked them when the boy had begun to recover. ‘The fever left him yesterday’ they said ‘at the seventh hour.’ The father realised that this was exactly the time when Jesus had said, ‘Your son will live’; and he and all his household believed. This was the second sign given by Jesus, on his return from Judaea to Galilee.
Prayer over the Offerings
May we receive O Lord, we pray, the effects of this offering dedicated to you, so that we may be cleansed from old earthly ways and be renewed by growth in heavenly life. Through Christ our Lord.

In a sharp contrast from the reception Jesus received in Nazareth His home town, the Galileans were out to welcome Him as a town hero, because of the miracle he performed there during a wedding. Jesus was concerned about this reception and it made him question their faith as being dependent on signs. The court official today professes deep faith in Jesus. He was certain Jesus was the answer and no other. Jesus seeing the faith in him, asked him to go home, ‘your son will live’. When we have faith, we do not need the presence of the ‘Man of God’ to be healed. God is everywhere and he knows the innermost yearning of our hearts. When Jesus is your only answer without doubt, you can be assured of your redemption without delay.

St Turibius of Mongrovejo
(1538 – 1606)
He was born in Spain in about 1538 and studied law at the University of Salamanca. He was named bishop of Lima in 1580. He was full of apostolic zeal. He died in Lima on 23 March 1606.

Elle faisait partie de ces nobles dames romaines admiratrices de saint Jérôme. Admirative, elle écoutait les leçons d’Ecriture Sainte qu’il donnait à Rome. Devenue veuve, elle distribua ses biens aux pauvres et entra dans un monastère romain dont elle devint la supérieure. Saint Jérôme lui consacrera une lettre dithyrambique.

Je compte sur toi, Seigneur, tu vois ma misère et tu sais ma détresse, j’exulte et je me réjouis dans ton amour. (Ps 30, 7-8)

Lectures de la messe
Première lecture (1 S 16, 1b.6-7.10-13a)
En ces jours-là, le Seigneur dit à Samuel : « Prends une corne que tu rempliras d’huile, et pars ! Je t’envoie auprès de Jessé de Bethléem, car j’ai vu parmi ses fils mon roi. » Lorsqu’ils arrivèrent et que Samuel aperçut Éliab, il se dit : « Sûrement, c’est lui le messie, lui qui recevra l’onction du Seigneur ! » Mais le Seigneur dit à Samuel : « Ne considère pas son apparence ni sa haute taille, car je l’ai écarté. Dieu ne regarde pas comme les hommes : les hommes regardent l’apparence, mais le Seigneur regarde le cœur. » Jessé présenta ainsi à Samuel ses sept fils, et Samuel lui dit : « Le Seigneur n’a choisi aucun de ceux-là. » Alors Samuel dit à Jessé : « N’as-tu pas d’autres garçons ? » Jessé répondit : « Il reste encore le plus jeune, il est en train de garder le troupeau. » Alors Samuel dit à Jessé : « Envoie-le chercher : nous ne nous mettrons pas à table tant qu’il ne sera pas arrivé. » Jessé le fit donc venir : le garçon était roux, il avait de beaux yeux, il était beau. Le Seigneur dit alors : « Lève-toi, donne-lui l’onction : c’est lui ! » Samuel prit la corne pleine d’huile, et lui donna l’onction au milieu de ses frères. L’Esprit du Seigneur s’empara de David à partir de ce jour-là. – Parole du Seigneur.

Le Seigneur est mon berger : je ne manque de rien. Sur des prés d’herbe fraîche, il me fait reposer.

Si je traverse les ravins de la mort, je ne crains aucun mal, car tu es avec moi : ton bâton me guide et me rassure.

Deuxième lecture (Ep 5, 8-14)
Frères, autrefois, vous étiez ténèbres ; maintenant, dans le Seigneur, vous êtes lumière ; conduisez-vous comme des enfants de lumière – or la lumière a pour fruit tout ce qui est bonté, justice et vérité – et sachez reconnaître ce qui est capable de plaire au Seigneur. Ne prenez aucune part aux activités des ténèbres, elles ne produisent rien de bon ; démasquez-les plutôt. Ce que ces gens-là font en cachette, on a honte même d’en parler. Mais tout ce qui est démasqué est rendu manifeste par la lumière, et tout ce qui devient manifeste est lumière. C’est pourquoi l’on dit : Réveille-toi, ô toi qui dors, relève-toi d’entre les morts, et le Christ t’illuminera. – Parole du Seigneur.

Évangile (Jn 9, 1.6-9.13-17.34-38)
En ce temps-là, en sortant du Temple, Jésus vit sur son passage un homme aveugle de naissance. Il cracha à terre et, avec la salive, il fit de la boue ; puis il appliqua la boue sur les yeux de l’aveugle, et lui dit : « Va te laver à la piscine de Siloé » – ce nom se traduit : Envoyé. L’aveugle y alla donc, et il se lava ; quand il revint, il voyait. Ses voisins, et ceux qui l’avaient observé auparavant – car il était mendiant – dirent alors : « N’est-ce pas celui qui se tenait là pour mendier ? » Les uns disaient : « C’est lui. » Les autres disaient : « Pas du tout, c’est quelqu’un qui lui ressemble. » Mais lui disait : « C’est bien moi. » On l’amène aux pharisiens, lui, l’ancien aveugle. Or, c’était un jour de sabbat que Jésus avait fait de la boue et lui avait ouvert les yeux. À leur tour, les pharisiens lui demandaient comment il pouvait voir. Il leur répondit : « Il m’a mis de la boue sur les yeux, je me suis lavé, et je vois. » Parmi les pharisiens, certains disaient : « Cet homme-là n’est pas de Dieu, puisqu’il n’observe pas le repos du sabbat. » D’autres disaient : « Comment un homme pécheur peut-il accomplir des signes pareils ? » Ainsi donc ils étaient divisés. Alors ils s’adressent de nouveau à l’aveugle : « Et toi, que dis-tu de lui, puisqu’il t’a ouvert les yeux ? » Il dit : « C’est un prophète. » Ils répliquèrent : « Tu es tout entier dans le péché depuis ta naissance, et tu nous fais la leçon ? » Et ils le jetèrent dehors. Jésus apprit qu’ils l’avaient jeté dehors. Second reading: Ephesians 5:8-14

Try to discover what the Lord wants of you, having nothing to do with the futile works of darkness but exposing them by contrast. The things which are done in secret are things that people are ashamed even to speak of; but anything exposed by the light will be illuminated and anything illuminated turns into light. As Jesus went along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. His disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, for him to have been born blind?’ ‘Neither he nor his parents sinned,’ Jesus answered ‘he was born blind so that the works of God might be displayed in him. ‘As long as the day lasts I must carry out the work of the one who sent me; the night will soon be here when no one can work. As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world.’ Having said this, he spat on the ground, made a paste with the spittle, put this over the eyes of the blind man, and said to him, ‘Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam’ (a name that means ‘sent’). So the blind man went off and washed himself, and came away with his sight restored. His neighbours and people who earlier had seen him begging said, ‘Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?’ Some said, ‘Yes, it is the same one.’ Others said, ‘No, he only looks like him.’ The man himself said, ‘I am the man.’ So they said to him, ‘Then how do your eyes come to be open?’ ‘The man called Jesus’ he answered ‘made a paste, daubed my eyes with it and said to me, “Go and wash at Siloam”; so I went, and when I washed I could see.’ They asked, ‘Where is he?’ ‘I don’t know’ he answered. They brought the man who had been blind to the Pharisees. It had been a sabbath day when Jesus made the paste and opened the man’s eyes, so when the Pharisees asked him how he had come to see, he said, ‘He put a paste on my eyes, and I washed, and I can see.’ Then some of the Pharisees said, ‘This man cannot be from God: he does not keep the sabbath.’ Others said, ‘How could a sinner produce signs like this?’ And there was disagreement among them. So they spoke to the blind man again, ‘What have you to say about him yourself, now that he has opened your eyes?’ ‘He is a prophet’ replied the man. However, the Jews would not believe that the man had been blind and had gained his sight, without first sending for his parents and asking them, ‘Is this man really your son who you say was born blind? If so, how is it that he is now able to see?’ His parents answered, ‘We know he is our son and we know he was born blind, but we do not know how it is that he can see now, or who opened his eyes. He is old enough: let him speak for himself.’ His parents spoke like this out of fear of the Jews, who had already agreed to expel from the synagogue anyone who should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ. This was why his parents said, ‘He is old enough; ask him.’ So the Jews again sent for the man and said to him, ‘Give glory to God! For our part, we know that this man is a sinner.’ The man answered, ‘I don’t know if he is a sinner; I only know that I was blind and now I can see.’ They said to him, ‘What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?’ He replied, ‘I have told you once and you wouldn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it all again? Do you want to become his disciples too?’ At this they hurled abuse at him: ‘You can be his disciple,’ they said ‘we are disciples of Moses: we know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.’ The man replied, ‘Now here is an astonishing thing! He has opened my eyes, and you don’t know where he comes from! We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but God does listen to men who are devout and do his will. Ever since the world began it is unheard of for anyone to open the eyes of a man who was born blind; if this man were not from God, he couldn’t do a thing.’ ‘Are you trying to teach us,’ they replied ‘and you a sinner through and through, since you were born!’ And they drove him away. Jesus heard they had driven him away, and when he found him he said to him, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’ ‘Sir,’ the man replied ‘tell me who he is so that I may believe in him.’ Jesus said, ‘You are looking at him; he is speaking to you.’ The man said, ‘Lord, I believe’, and worshipped him. Jesus said: ‘It is for judgement that I have come into this world, so that those without sight may see and those with sight turn blind.’ Hearing this, some Pharisees who were present said to him, ‘We are not blind, surely?’ Jesus replied: ‘Blind? If you were, you would not be guilty, but since you say, “We see,” your guilt remains.’

Meditation
Jesus today heals a man born blind. As the gospel narrative goes on, we discover that there were a group of people who needed spiritual healing. Today the leaders of the synagogue chose to be blind to the glory of God. They where more like dictators concerned about their political powers than the welfare of people. This form of blindness exists in our world today. It comes in form of envy or jealousy. When one cannot be happy for the good things that happen to others, such a person will never know when good things come his or her way. When we share in the

Evangile : Lc 18, 9-14
En ce temps-là, à l’adresse de certains qui étaient convaincus d’être justes et qui méprisaient les autres, Jésus dit la parabole que voici : « Deux hommes montèrent au Temple pour prier. L’un était pharisien, et l’autre, publicain (c’est-à-dire un collecteur d’impôts). Le pharisien se tenait debout et priait en lui-même: “Mon Dieu, je te rends grâce parce que je ne suis pas comme les autres hommes – ils sont voleurs, injustes, adultères –, ou encore comme ce publicain. Gospel: Luke 18:9-14
Jesus spoke the following parable to some people who prided themselves on being virtuous and despised everyone else: ‘Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood there and said this prayer to himself, “I thank you, God, that I am not grasping, unjust, adulterous like the rest of mankind, and particularly that I am not like this tax collector here. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes on all I get.” The tax collector stood some distance away, not daring even to raise his eyes to heaven; but he beat his breast and said, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” This man, I tell you, went home again at rights with God; the other did not. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the man who humbles himself will be exalted.’

May we truly revere, O merciful God, these holy gifts, by which you ceaselessly nourish us, and may we always partake of them with abundant faith in our heart. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Jesus Christ in the gospel today, uses a parable to compare two spiritual personalities. One proud and the other humble. These personalities Jesus exposes can be applied to the attitudes of Christians today. Some people come to church thinking that they own the church and should be listened to. Some have assumed that they know and are more spiritually enlightened than anyone else and if they are not called on to lead prayers in an assembly then God will not listen. They have so much exulted themselves that they do not feel themselves as part of humanity. The psalmist will say, “a humble contrite heart, the Lord will not spurn”. When we humble ourselves before the Lord, He will exult us. The Lord needs our repentance.

Cuthbert fut d’abord évêque de Kindisfarne en Angleterre. Il rétablit le rite de la liturgie romaine dans son diocèse. Il préféra reprendre la vie monastique au monastère de Melrose, de tradition irlandaise, et s’en fut solitaire dans la paix de Dieu. Et c’est là que Saint Herbert, son meilleur ami, venait le rejoindre chaque année pendant plusieurs jours pour parler des choses de Dieu. Ils eurent la grâce de mourir à quelques jours l’un de l’autre et à la même heure.

1ère lecture : Os 14, 2-10
Ainsi parle le Seigneur: Reviens, Israël, au Seigneur ton Dieu; car tu t’es effondré par suite de tes fautes. Revenez au Seigneur en lui présentant ces paroles: « Enlève toutes les fautes, et accepte ce qui est bon. Au lieu de taureaux, nous t’offrons en sacrifice les paroles de nos lèvres. Puisque les Assyriens ne peuvent pas nous sauver, nous ne monterons plus sur des chevaux, et nous ne dirons plus à l’ouvrage de nos mains: “Tu es notre Dieu”, car de toi seul l’orphelin reçoit de la tendresse. » Voici la réponse du Seigneur: Je les guérirai de leur infidélité, je les aimerai d’un amour gratuit, car ma colère s’est détournée d’Israël. Je serai pour Israël comme la rosée, il fleurira comme le lis, il étendra ses racines comme les arbres du Liban. Ses jeunes pousses vont grandir, sa parure sera comme celle de l’olivier, son parfum, comme celui de la forêt du Liban. Ils reviendront s’asseoir à son ombre, ils feront revivre le froment, ils fleuriront comme la vigne, ils seront renommés comme le vin du Liban. Éphraïm ! Peux-tu me confondre avec les idoles? C’est moi qui te réponds et qui te regarde. Je suis comme le cyprès toujours vert, c’est moi qui te donne ton fruit. Qui donc est assez sage pour comprendre ces choses, assez pénétrant pour les saisir? Oui, les chemins du Seigneur sont droits: les justes y avancent, mais les pécheurs y trébuchent.

Evangile : Mc 12, 28b- 34
En ce temps- là, un scribe s’avança vers Jésus pour lui demander: « Quel est le premier de tous les commandements?» Jésus lui fit cette réponse: « Voici le premier: Écoute, Israël: le Seigneur notre Dieu est l’unique Seigneur. Tu aimeras le Seigneur ton Dieu de tout ton cœur, de toute ton âme, de tout ton esprit et de toute ta force. Et voici le second: Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même. Il n’y a pas de commandement plus grand que ceux- là.» Le scribe reprit: « Fort bien, Maître, tu as dit vrai: Dieu est l’Unique et il n’y en a pas d’autre que lui. L’aimer de tout son cœur, de toute son intelligence, de toute sa force, et aimer son prochain comme soi-même, vaut mieux que toute offrande d’holocaustes et de sacrifices.» Jésus, voyant qu’il avait fait une remarque judicieuse, lui dit: « Tu n’es pas loin du royaume de Dieu. » Et personne n’osait plus l’interroger.
