St. Peter Regulatus
He was a Franciscan reformer born in Valladolid, Spain into a wealthy family. In his convent he lived a life of prayer and poverty. Thirty-six years after his death his body was found untouched by nature.

First reading: Daniel 13:1-9,15-17,19-30,33-62 (Shorter Reading: Daniel 13:41-62)
Susanna was condemned to death. She cried out as loud as she could, ‘Eternal God, you know all secrets and everything before it happens; you know that they have given false evidence against me. And now have I to die, innocent as I am of everything their malice has invented against me?’ The Lord heard her cry and, as she was being led away to die, he roused the holy spirit residing in a young boy named Daniel who began to shout, ‘I am innocent of this woman’s death!’ At which all the people turned to him and asked, ‘What do you mean by these words?’ Standing in the middle of the crowd he replied, ‘Are you so stupid, sons of Israel, as to condemn a daughter of Israel unheard, and without troubling to find out the truth? Go back to the scene of the trial: these men have given false evidence against her.’ All the people hurried back, and the elders said to Daniel, ‘Come and sit with us and tell us what you mean, since God has given you the gifts that elders have.’ Daniel said, ‘Keep the men well apart from each other for I want to question them.’ When the men had been separated, Daniel had one of them brought to him. ‘You have grown old in wickedness,’ he said ‘and now the sins of your earlier days have overtaken you, you with your unjust judgements, your condemnation of the innocent, your acquittal of guilty men, when the Lord has said, “You must not put the innocent and the just to death.” Now then, since you saw her so clearly, tell me what tree you saw them lying under?’ He replied, ‘Under a mastic tree.’ Daniel said, ‘True enough! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God has already received your sentence from him and will slash you in half.’ He dismissed the man, ordered the other to be brought and said to him, ‘Spawn of Canaan, not of Judah, beauty has seduced you, lust has led your heart astray! This is how you have been behaving with the daughters of Israel and they were too frightened to resist; but here is a daughter of Judah who could not stomach your wickedness! Now then, tell me what tree you surprised them under?’ He replied, ‘Under a holm oak.’ Daniel said, ‘True enough! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God is waiting, with a sword to drive home and split you, and destroy the pair of you.’ Then the whole assembly shouted, blessing God, the saviour of those who trust in him. And they turned on the two elders whom Daniel had convicted of false evidence out of their own mouths. As prescribed in the Law of Moses, they sentenced them to the same punishment as they had intended to inflict on their neighbour. They put them to death; the life of an innocent woman was spared that day.

Gospel: John 8:1-11
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; and making her stand there in full view of everybody, they said to Jesus, ‘Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, and Moses has ordered us in the Law to condemn women like this to death by stoning. What have you to say?’ They asked him this as a test, looking for something to use against him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. As they persisted with their question, he looked up and said, ‘If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.’ Then he bent down and wrote on the ground again. When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained standing there. He looked up and said, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ ‘No one, sir’ she replied. ‘Neither do I condemn you,’ said Jesus ‘go away, and do not sin any more.’
Prayer over the Offerings
Grant, we pray, O Lord, that, preparing to celebrate the holy mysteries, we may bring before you as the fruit of bodily penance a joyful purity of heart. Through Christ our Lord.
Communion Antiphon
Has no one condemned you, woman? No one, Lord. Neither shall I condemn you. From now on, sin no more.
Prayer after Communion
Strengthened by the blessing of your Sacraments, we pray, O Lord, that through them we may constantly be cleansed of our faults and, by following Christ, hasten our steps upward toward you. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The stories in the fist reading and the gospel of today presents us with women who were condemned. The first, Susanna was innocent but condemned to die and the second was caught in the act of adultery and condemned to die. In the eyes of their judges they were to die while nothing was mentioned about the men. Both are rescued by the saving power of God from the hands of human Judges. The hypocrisy of humanity has made us to condemn others for offences we are also guilty of but may have not been exposed. Jesus teaches us today that if God should look at our guilt no one would survive. Let us cease passing judgement on others but instead pray, love and help others to grow, that we may share in such opportunities of grace when our moments of failure comes.

Sainte Gladys
Elle appartient à la lignée des reines des petits royaumes du pays des Galles. Sa fidélité conjugale laissa longtemps à désirer. Quand elle devint veuve, elle se fit ermite pour expier ses fautes et passa sa vie dans la solitude.

Première lecture (Ez 37, 12-14)

Deuxième lecture (Rm 8, 8-11)
Frères, ceux qui sont sous l’emprise de la chair ne peuvent pas plaire à Dieu. Or, vous, vous n’êtes pas sous l’emprise de la chair, mais sous celle de l’Esprit, puisque l’Esprit de Dieu habite en vous. Celui qui n’a pas l’Esprit du Christ ne lui appartient pas. Mais si le Christ est en vous, le corps, il est vrai, reste marqué par la mort à cause du péché, mais l’Esprit vous fait vivre, puisque vous êtes devenus des justes. Et si l’Esprit de celui qui a ressuscité Jésus d’entre les morts habite en vous, celui qui a ressuscité Jésus, le Christ, d’entre les morts donnera aussi la vie à vos corps mortels par son Esprit qui habite en vous. – Parole du Seigneur.

Évangile (Jn 11, 1-45)
En ce temps-là, il y avait quelqu’un de malade, Lazare, de Béthanie, le village de Marie et de Marthe, sa sœur. Or Marie était celle qui répandit du parfum sur le Seigneur et lui essuya les pieds avec ses cheveux. C’était son frère Lazare qui était malade. Donc, les deux sœurs envoyèrent dire à Jésus : « Seigneur, celui que tu aimes est malade. » En apprenant cela, Jésus dit : « Cette maladie ne conduit pas à la mort, elle est pour la gloire de Dieu, afin que par elle le Fils de Dieu soit glorifié. » Jésus aimait Marthe et sa sœur, ainsi que Lazare. Quand il apprit que celui-ci était malade, il demeura deux jours encore à l’endroit où il se trouvait. Puis, après cela, il dit aux disciples : « Revenons en Judée. » Les disciples lui dirent : « Rabbi, tout récemment, les Juifs, là-bas, cherchaient à te lapider, et tu y retournes ? » Jésus répondit : « N’y a-t-il pas douze heures dans une journée ? Celui qui marche pendant le jour ne trébuche pas, parce qu’il voit la lumière de ce monde ; mais celui qui marche pendant la nuit trébuche, parce que la lumière n’est pas en lui. » Après ces paroles, il ajouta : « Lazare, notre ami, s’est endormi ; mais je vais aller le tirer de ce sommeil. » Les disciples lui dirent alors : « Seigneur, s’il s’est endormi, il sera sauvé. » Jésus avait parlé de la mort ; eux pensaient qu’il parlait du repos du sommeil. Alors il leur dit ouvertement : « Lazare est mort, et je me réjouis de n’avoir pas été là, à cause de vous, pour que vous croyiez. Mais allons auprès de lui ! » Thomas, appelé Didyme (c’est-à-dire Jumeau), dit aux autres disciples : « Allons-y, nous aussi, pour mourir avec lui ! » À son arrivée, Jésus trouva Lazare au tombeau depuis quatre jours déjà. Comme Béthanie était tout près de Jérusalem – à une distance de quinze stades (c’est-à-dire une demi-heure de marche environ) –, beaucoup de Juifs étaient venus réconforter Marthe et Marie au sujet de leur frère. Lorsque Marthe apprit l’arrivée de Jésus, elle partit à sa rencontre, tandis que Marie restait assise à la maison. Marthe dit à Jésus : « Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort. Mais maintenant encore, je le sais, tout ce que tu demanderas à Dieu, Dieu te l’accordera. » Jésus lui dit : « Ton frère ressuscitera. » Marthe reprit : « Je sais qu’il ressuscitera à la résurrection, au dernier jour. » Jésus lui dit : « Moi, je suis la résurrection et la vie. Celui qui croit en moi, même s’il meurt, vivra ; quiconque vit et croit en moi ne mourra jamais. Crois-tu cela ? » Elle répondit : « Oui, Seigneur, je le crois : tu es le Christ, le Fils de Dieu, tu es celui qui vient dans le monde. » Ayant dit cela, elle partit appeler sa sœur Marie, et lui dit tout bas : « Le Maître est là, il t’appelle. » Marie, dès qu’elle l’entendit, se leva rapidement et alla rejoindre Jésus. Il n’était pas encore entré dans le village, mais il se trouvait toujours à l’endroit où Marthe l’avait rencontré. Les Juifs qui étaient à la maison avec Marie et la réconfortaient, la voyant se lever et sortir si vite, la suivirent ; ils pensaient qu’elle allait au tombeau pour y pleurer. Marie arriva à l’endroit où se trouvait Jésus. Dès qu’elle le vit, elle se jeta à ses pieds et lui dit : « Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort. » Quand il vit qu’elle pleurait, et que les Juifs venus avec elle pleuraient aussi, Jésus, en son esprit, fut saisi d’émotion, il fut bouleversé, et il demanda : « Où l’avez-vous déposé ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Seigneur, viens, et vois. » Alors Jésus se mit à pleurer. Les Juifs disaient : « Voyez comme il l’aimait ! » Mais certains d’entre eux dirent : « Lui qui a ouvert les yeux de l’aveugle, ne pouvait-il pas empêcher Lazare de mourir ? » Jésus, repris par l’émotion, arriva au tombeau. C’était une grotte fermée par une pierre. Jésus dit : « Enlevez la pierre. » Marthe, la sœur du défunt, lui dit : « Seigneur, il sent déjà ; c’est le quatrième jour qu’il est là. » Alors Jésus dit à Marthe : « Ne te l’ai-je pas dit ? Si tu crois, tu verras la gloire de Dieu. » On enleva donc la pierre. Alors Jésus leva les yeux au ciel et dit : « Père, je te rends grâce parce que tu m’as exaucé. Je le savais bien, moi, que tu m’exauces toujours ; mais je le dis à cause de la foule qui m’entoure, afin qu’ils croient que c’est toi qui m’as envoyé. » Après cela, il cria d’une voix forte : « Lazare, viens dehors ! » Et le mort sortit, les pieds et les mains liés par des bandelettes, le visage enveloppé d’un suaire. Jésus leur dit : « Déliez-le, et laissez-le aller. » Beaucoup de Juifs, qui étaient venus auprès de Marie et avaient donc vu ce que Jésus avait fait, crurent en lui. – Acclamons la Parole de Dieu.

Nous t’offrons, Seigneur, le sacrifice de paix, et nous en attendons la grâce : délivre-nous de nos fautes et dirige toi-même nos cœurs incertains. Par Jésus Christ.

Second reading: Romans 8:8-11
People who are interested only in unspiritual things can never be pleasing to God. Your interests, however, are not in the unspiritual, but in the spiritual, since the Spirit of God has made his home in you. In fact, unless you possessed the Spirit of Christ you would not belong to him. Though your body may be dead it is because of sin, but if Christ is in you then your spirit is life itself because you have been justified; and if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to your own mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you.

Gospel: John 11:1-45+
There was a man named Lazarus who lived in the village of Bethany with the two sisters, Mary and Martha, and he was ill. It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair. The sisters sent this message to Jesus, ‘Lord, the man you love is ill.’ On receiving the message, Jesus said, ‘This sickness will end not in death but in God’s glory, and through it the Son of God will be glorified.’ Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, yet when he heard that Lazarus was ill he stayed where he was for two more days before saying to the disciples, ‘Let us go to Judaea.’ The disciples said, ‘Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews wanted to stone you; are you going back again?’ Jesus replied: ‘Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man can walk in the daytime without stumbling because he has the light of this world to see by; but if he walks at night he stumbles, because there is no light to guide him.’ He said that and then added, ‘Our friend Lazarus is resting, I am going to wake him.’ The disciples said to him, ‘Lord, if he is able to rest he is sure to get better.’ The phrase Jesus used referred to the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by ‘rest’ he meant ‘sleep’, so Jesus put it plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead; and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.’ Then Thomas – known as the Twin – said to the other disciples, ‘Let us go too, and die with him.’ On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already. Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to sympathise with them over their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus had come she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house. Martha said to Jesus, ‘If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.’ ‘Your brother’ said Jesus to her ‘will rise again.’ Martha said, ‘I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’ Jesus said: ‘I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ she said ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.’ When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, ‘The Master is here and wants to see you.’ Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him. Jesus had not yet come into the village; he was still at the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were in the house sympathising with Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there. Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who followed her, Jesus said in great distress, with a sigh that came straight from the heart, ‘Where have you put him?’ They said, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept; and the Jews said, ‘See how much he loved him!’ But there were some who remarked, ‘He opened the eyes of the blind man, could he not have prevented this man’s death?’ Still sighing, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening. Jesus said, ‘Take the stone away.’ Martha said to him, ‘Lord, by now he will smell; this is the fourth day.’ Jesus replied, ‘Have I not told you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?’ So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: ‘Father, I thank you for hearing my prayer. I knew indeed that you always hear me, but I speak for the sake of all these who stand round me, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.’ When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, here! Come out!’ The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with bands of stuff and a cloth round his face. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, let him go free.’ Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and had seen what he did believed in him.

Hear us, almighty God, and, having instilled in your servants the teachings of the Christian faith, graciously purify them by the working of this sacrifice. Through Christ our Lord.

Everyone who lives and believes in me will not die for ever, says the Lord.

We pray, almighty God, that we may always be counted among the members of Christ, in whose Body and Blood we have communion. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
Jesus today continues to manifest his glory even when it seems that all human odds are against him. The raising of the dead and decaying man Lazarus was a turning point for so many Jews who were yet to be convinced about Jesus’ messianic mandate. With God all things are possible, if we profess our faith in Him. Are there situations where people have told you everything is humanly impossible? Just know that when it is humanly impossible, it is still divinely possible. It is important to trust in God and to accept His will in our life. Martha never expected Jesus to raise Lazarus, but simply believed that Lazarus would never have died if Jesus came. Many things die in our lives when we do not invite Jesus on time. It is never too late to repent. The time is now.

Saint Gontran
Il se convertit après plusieurs crimes, pleura ses péchés pendant le reste de sa vie, racheta ses fautes par ses grandes libéralités envers les pauvres, qui le surnommèrent « le bon Gontran ». Vers la fin de sa vie, il entra au monastère Saint Marcel de Châlon sur Saône. Peu après sa mort, il fut proclamé saint par son peuple.

Les flots de la mort m’étreignaient, les torrents infernaux me happaient ; dans mon angoisse, j’appelai le Seigneur. Lui qui me retire du gouffre des eaux, il m’a libéré, car il m’aime.

1ère lecture : Jr 11, 18-20

En ce temps-là, Jésus enseignait au temple de Jérusalem. Dans la foule, on avait entendu ses paroles, et les uns disaient : « C’est vraiment lui, le Prophète annoncé ! » D’autres disaient: « C’est lui le Christ ! » Mais d’autres encore demandaient: « Le Christ peut-il venir de Galilée? L’Écriture ne dit-elle pas que c’est de la descendance de David et de Bethléem, le village de David, que vient le Christ ? » C’est ainsi que la foule se divisa à cause de lui. Quelques-uns d’entre eux voulaient l’arrêter, mais personne ne mit la main sur lui. Les gardes revinrent auprès des grands prêtres et des pharisiens, qui leur demandèrent: « Pourquoi ne l’avez-vous pas amené ? » Les gardes répondirent: « Jamais un homme n’a parlé de la sorte ! » Les pharisiens leur répliquèrent: « Alors, vous aussi, vous vous êtes laissé égarer? Parmi les chefs du peuple et les pharisiens, y en a-t-il un seul qui ait cru en lui? Quant à cette foule qui ne sait rien de la Loi, ce sont des maudits ! » Nicodème, l’un d’entre eux, celui qui était allé précédemment trouver Jésus, leur dit: « Notre Loi permet-elle de juger un homme sans l’entendre d’abord pour savoir ce qu’il a fait ? » Ils lui répondirent: « Serais- tu, toi aussi, de Galilée? Cherche bien, et tu verras que jamais aucun prophète ne surgit de Galilée ! » Puis ils s’en allèrent chacun chez soi.

Some would have liked to arrest him, but no one actually laid hands on him. Meditation
We see a practical manifestation of how God chooses the weak to shame the strong. In a funny turn of events, the police sent to enforce the law came back to proclaim the glory of God to the Pharisees who in their spiritual blindness and jealousy have failed to acknowledge. In their desperation to stop Jesus from doing good, they have seen a rising number of people teaching and revealing to them the divinity and messianic nature of Jesus. No matter how persecutors try to stop the word of God from being proclaimed, they end up convincing more people of what they seek to cover up. We should stand strong in the midst of temptations and persecution, so that the glory of God may be revealed through our strength.

En ce temps-là, Jésus parcourait la Galilée: il ne voulait pas parcourir la Judée car les Juifs cherchaient à le tuer. La fête juive des Tentes était proche. Lorsque ses frères furent montés à Jérusalem pour la fête, il y monta lui aussi, non pas ostensiblement, mais en secret. On était déjà au milieu de la semaine de la fête quand Jésus monta au Temple ; et là il enseignait. Quelques habitants de Jérusalem disaient alors: « N’est-ce pas celui qu’on cherche à tuer? Le voilà qui parle ouvertement, et personne ne lui dit rien! Nos chefs auraient-ils vraiment reconnu que c’est lui le Christ? Mais lui, nous savons d’où il est. Or, le Christ, quand il viendra, personne ne saura d’où il est. » Jésus, qui enseignait dans le Temple, s’écria: « Vous me connaissez? Et vous savez d’où je suis? Je ne suis pas venu de moi-même: mais il est véridique, Celui qui m’a envoyé, lui que vous ne connaissez pas. Moi, je le connais parce que je viens d’auprès de lui, et c’est lui qui m’a envoyé.» On cherchait à l’arrêter, mais personne ne mit la main sur lui parce que son heure n’était pas encore venue.

St John of Egypt (304 – 394)
A hermit in a cave, he lived a very strict life of prayer and manual work. People visited him, since he was able to perform miracles, heal the sick and read people’s hearts. He died in 394, at the age of 90.

Let us see if what he says is true, let us observe what kind of end he himself will have. If the virtuous man is God’s son, God will take his part and rescue him from the clutches of his enemies. Let us test him with cruelty and with torture, and thus explore this gentleness of his and put his endurance to the proof. Let us condemn him to a shameful death since he will be looked after – we have his word for it.’ This is the way they reason, but they are misled, their malice makes them blind. They do not know the hidden things of God, they have no hope that holiness will be rewarded, they can see no reward for blameless souls.

Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, ‘Isn’t this the man they want to kill? And here he is, speaking freely, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authorities have made up their minds that he is the Christ? Yet we all know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one will know where he comes from.’ Then, as Jesus taught in the Temple, he cried out: ‘Yes, you know me and you know where I came from. Yet I have not come of myself: no, there is one who sent me and I really come from him, and you do not know him,

Meditation
Even though Jesus was facing growing pressure to deny the truth about His existence, he did not flinch a bit. He insisted on His divine mandate as messiah. Even while He knew that He was about to be arrested and prosecuted by the Jews, He still did not bother. We are faced today with growing denial of the Word of God. This comes mainly in the form of anti-Christian messages that seek to dismiss the message of Jesus as baseless and unrealistic. Christians are ashamed to even mention the name of Jesus since the world makes us believe it is offensive to call this Holy Name. Jesus while on earth was going about doing good, we should not be pressured to deny a good man because the world is tormented by His goodness.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait aux Juifs: « Si c’est moi qui me rends témoignage, mon témoignage n’est pas vrai; c’est un autre qui me rend témoignage, et je sais que le témoignage qu’il me rend est vrai. Vous avez envoyé une délégation auprès de Jean le Baptiste, et il a rendu témoignage à la vérité. Moi, ce n’est pas d’un homme que je reçois le témoignage, mais je parle ainsi pour que vous soyez sauvés. Jean était la lampe qui brûle et qui brille, et vous avez voulu vous réjouir un moment à sa lumière. Mais j’ai pour moi un témoignage plus grand que celui de Jean: ce sont les œuvres que le Père m’a donné d’accomplir; les œuvres mêmes que je fais témoignent que le Père m’a envoyé. Et le Père qui m’a envoyé, lui, m’a rendu témoignage. Vous n’avez jamais entendu sa voix, vous n’avez jamais vu sa face, et vous ne laissez pas sa parole demeurer en vous, puisque vous ne croyez pas en celui que le Père a envoyé. Vous scrutez les Écritures parce que vous pensez y trouver la vie éternelle; or, ce sont les Écritures qui me rendent témoignage, et vous ne voulez pas venir à moi pour avoir la vie! La gloire, je ne la reçois pas des hommes; d’ailleurs je vous connais: vous n’avez pas en vous l’amour de Dieu. She was born in England in 1555. For hosting fugitive priests, she was arrested, imprisoned by authorities and condemned to be pressed to death on March 25, 1586. She was stretched out on the ground with a sharp rock on her back and crushed under a door overladen with unbearable weights.

I have come in the name of my Father and you refuse to accept me; if someone else comes in his own name you will accept him. How can you believe, since you look to one another for approval and are not concerned with the approval that comes from the one God? Do not imagine that I am going to accuse you before the Father: you place your hopes on Moses, and Moses will be your accuser. If you really believed him you would believe me too, since it was I that he was writing about; but if you refuse to believe what he wrote, how can you believe what I say?’

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that what we offer in sacrifice may cleanse us in our frailty from every evil and always grant us your protection. Through Christ our Lord.

May this Sacrament we have received purify us, we pray, O Lord, and grant your servants freedom from all blame, that those bound by a guilty conscience may glory in the fullness of heavenly remedy. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Jesus in the gospel expresses great disappointment with the people whom he has come to save. His rejection by the Jews and their reluctance to believe even though He worked signs and wonders amongst them struck him. Looking at our world and Christianity today he may even feel more disappointed. We live in a world that seeks magic and wonders and not true love and unity. We live in a world that seeks money and not the suffering of Jesus. The world tends to refuse Jesus despite everything he does. However we as Christians need to accept and fulfil the word of God that we may attain heaven on earth.

O God, who willed that your Word should take on the reality of human flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary, grant, we pray, that we, who confess our Redeemer to be God and man, may merit to become partakers even in his divine nature. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Isaiah 7:10-14,8:10
The Lord spoke to Ahaz and said, ‘Ask the Lord your God for a sign for yourself coming either from the depths of Sheol or from the heights above.’ ‘No,’ Ahaz answered ‘I will not put the Lord to the test.’ Then he said: Listen now, House of David: are you not satisfied with trying the patience of men without trying the patience of my God, too? The Lord himself, therefore, will give you a sign. It is this: the maiden is with child and will soon give birth to a son whom she will call Immanuel, a name which means ‘God is with us.’

- You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear. You do not ask for holocaust and victim. Instead, here am I.

Second reading: Hebrews 10:4-10
Bulls’ blood and goats’ blood are useless for taking away sins, and this is what Christ said, on coming into the world: You who wanted no sacrifice or oblation, prepared a body for me. You took no pleasure in holocausts or sacrifices for sin; then I said, just as I was commanded in the scroll of the book, ‘God, here I am! I am coming to obey your will.’ Notice that he says first: You did not want what the Law lays down as the things to be offered, that is: the sacrifices, the oblations, the holocausts and the sacrifices for sin, and you took no pleasure in them; and then he says: Here I am! I am coming to obey your will. He is abolishing the first sort to replace it with the second. And this will was for us to be made holy by the offering of his body made once and for all by Jesus Christ.

Gospel: Luke 1:26-38
The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. He went in and said to her, ‘Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’ She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, ‘Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God’s favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?’ ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you’ the angel answered ‘and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. And so the child will be holy and will be called Son of God. Know this too: your kinswoman Elizabeth has, in her old age, herself conceived a son, and she whom people called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible to God.’ ‘I am the handmaid of the Lord,’ said Mary ‘let what you have said be done to me.’ And the angel left her.
Prayer over the Offerings
Be pleased, almighty God, to accept your Church’s offering, so that she, who is aware that her beginnings lie in the Incarnation of your Only Begotten Son, may rejoice to celebrate his mysteries on this Solemnity. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Communion Antiphon: Is 7: 14
Behold, a Virgin shall conceive and bear a son; and his name will be called Emmanuel.
Prayer after Communion
Confirm in our minds the mysteries of the true faith, we pray, O Lord, so that, confessing that he who was conceived of the Virgin Mary is true God and true man, we may, through the saving power of his Resurrection, merit to attain eternal joy. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
If God were to send an angel to visit you, what announcement will the angel declare onto you? Mary today was ready and willing to receive this announcement from God. She was not bothered but she opened up her life to be used by God to bring salvation to the world. We who celebrate Mary’s humility and acceptance today, how willing are we to do God’s will? Will God find us ready to be used to bring His salvation to the ends of the earth? Sadly, this may not be the case of many who call themselves Christians. Let us make ourselves ready for the Lord, that the world may see His glory in us.
