Saint Philip Neri (1515 – 1595)
Psalter: Week II

He was born in Florence in 1515. At the age of eighteen he went to Rome, and earned his living as a tutor. He undertook much-needed charitable work among the young men of the city, and started a brotherhood to help the sick poor and pilgrims.

Grant, almighty and merciful God, that we may in truth receive a share in the Resurrection of Christ your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 16:22-34
The crowd joined in and showed their hostility to Paul and Silas, so the magistrates had them stripped and ordered them to be flogged. They were given many lashes and then thrown into prison, and the gaoler was told to keep a close watch on them. So, following his instructions, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. Late that night Paul and Silas were praying and singing God’s praises, while the other prisoners listened. Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison to its foundations. All the doors flew open and the chains fell from all the prisoners. When the gaoler woke and saw the doors wide open he drew his sword and was about to commit suicide, presuming that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, ‘Don’t do yourself any harm; we are all here.’ The gaoler called for lights, then rushed in, threw himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas, and escorted them out, saying, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ They told him, ‘Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, and your household too.’ Then they preached the word of the Lord to him and to all his family. Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised then and there with all his household. Afterwards he took them home and gave them a meal, and the whole family celebrated their conversion to belief in God.

Meditation
The account of Paul and Silas highlights the transformative power of prayers and praises directed to God. Their fervent prayers and songs of praise ascended to heaven, leading to the miraculous opening of the prison gates by the power of God. Those who entrust their lives to the Lord need not fear, knowing that He is capable of delivering them from any form of imprisonment. As Christians, confident that Christ never abandons His own, we should emulate the attitude of Paul and Silas each day. Turning to Christ in times of trouble, and seeking His intervention, becomes a vital practice. Like Paul and Silas, we are called to render our praises to God at all times.

1ère lecture : Act 16, 11-15
Avec Paul, de Troas nous avons gagné le large et filé tout droit sur l’île de Samothrace puis, le lendemain, sur Néapolis, et ensuite sur Philippes, qui est une cité du premier district de Macédoine et une colonie romaine. Nous avons passé un certain temps dans cette ville et, le jour du sabbat, nous en avons franchi la porte pour rejoindre le bord de la rivière, où nous pensions trouver un lieu de prière. Nous nous sommes assis, et nous avons parlé aux femmes qui s’étaient réunies. L’une d’elles nommée Lydie, une négociante en étoffes de pourpre, originaire de la ville de Thyatire, et qui adorait le Dieu unique, écoutait. Le Seigneur lui ouvrit l’esprit pour la rendre attentive à ce que disait Paul. Quand elle fut baptisée, elle et tous les gens de sa maison, elle nous adressa cette invitation : « Si vous avez reconnu ma foi au Seigneur, venez donc dans ma maison pour y demeurer. » C’est ainsi qu’elle nous a forcé la main.

Méditation
La première lecture nous montre comment Lydie force la main des apôtres en les invitant dans sa demeure. L’écoute de la Bonne Nouvelle l’ayant fascinée, elle pense ainsi se mettre au service du Seigneur. Nous sommes tous appelés à comprendre que l’écoute de la parole de Dieu est une motivation dans la participation active à l’œuvre évangélisatrice.

First reading : Acts 16:11-15
Sailing from Troas we made a straight run for Samothrace; the next day for Neapolis, and from there for Philippi, a Roman colony and the principal city of that particular district of Macedonia. After a few days in this city we went along the river outside the gates as it was the sabbath and this was a customary place for prayer. We sat down and preached to the women who had come to the meeting. One of these women was called Lydia, a devout woman from the town of Thyatira who was in the purple-dye trade. She listened to us, and the Lord opened her heart to accept what Paul was saying. After she and her household had been baptised she sent us an invitation: ‘If you really think me a true believer in the Lord,’ she said ‘come and stay with us’; and she would take no refusal.

Meditation
In the first reading, Lydia, a devout woman and trader, extends hospitality to the messengers of the Good News. This message brings so much joy to her home that she accepts baptism for herself and her entire household. Lydia hears the Word of God and allows her heart to be touched by it, and she becomes a fervent follower of Christ. Reflecting on Lydia’s response, we should ask ourselves: “How do I react when the Word of God touches me?” “Do I make a firm resolution to change my way of life and become a more devout servant of the Lord, or do I continuously postpone my conversion?” Let us ask God for the grace to act promptly when we hear His Word, drawing closer to Him each day.

Grant, almighty God, that we may celebrate with heartfelt devotion, these days of joy which we keep in honour of the risen Lord, and that what we relive in remembrance, we may always hold to in what we do. First reading : Acts 15:1-2,22-29
Some men came down from Judaea and taught the brothers, ‘Unless you have yourselves circumcised in the tradition of Moses you cannot be saved.’ This led to disagreement, and after Paul and Barnabas had had a long argument with these men it was arranged that Paul and Barnabas and others of the church should go up to Jerusalem and discuss the problem with the apostles and elders. Then the apostles and elders decided to choose delegates to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; the whole church concurred with this. They chose Judas known as Barsabbas and Silas, both leading men in the brotherhood, and gave them this letter to take with them: ‘The apostles and elders, your brothers, send greetings to the brothers of pagan birth in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia. We hear that some of our members have disturbed you with their demands and have unsettled your minds. They acted without any authority from us; and so we have decided unanimously to elect delegates and to send them to you with Barnabas and Paul, men we highly respect who have dedicated their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accordingly we are sending you Judas and Silas, who will confirm by word of mouth what we have written in this letter. It has been decided by the Holy Spirit and by ourselves not to saddle you with any burden beyond these essentials: you are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols; from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from fornication. Second reading : Apocalypse 21:10-14, 22-23

The walls of it were of a great height, and had twelve gates; at each of the twelve gates there was an angel, and over the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel; on the east there were three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. The city walls stood on twelve foundation stones, each one of which bore the name of one of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. I saw that there was no temple in the city since the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb were themselves the temple, and the city did not need the sun or the moon for light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and the Lamb was a lighted torch for it.

Meditation
After Christ’s ascension into heaven, the church began to encounter multiple crises due to her growth. As she expanded to other nations, problems of customs and traditions inevitably arose. However, these crises have never succeeded to destroy the church. At any given point in her history, she has navigated through whatever crises have arisen and found solutions to remedy them. This resilience is attributed to the presence of the Advocate the Lord promised to send to be her guide. Christ did not abandon His church. Through the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, He is always with us, not only helping us remember what He taught us but also providing His assistance in times of trials and tribulations. Let us seek the grace to be always receptive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Dieu tout-puissant, accorde-nous, en ces jours de fête, de célébrer avec ferveur le Christ ressuscité: Que le mystère de Pâques dont nous faisons mémoire reste présent dans notre vie et la transforme. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Act 15, 1-2.22-29
En ces jours-là, des gens, venus de Judée à Antioche, enseignaient les frères en disant : « Si vous n’acceptez pas la circoncision selon la coutume qui vient de Moïse, vous ne pouvez pas être sauvés. » Cela provoqua un affrontement ainsi qu’une vive discussion engagée par Paul et Barnabé contre ces gens-là. Alors on décida que Paul et Barnabé, avec quelques autres frères, monteraient à Jérusalem auprès des Apôtres et des Anciens pour discuter de cette question. Les Apôtres et les Anciens décidèrent avec toute l’Église de choisir parmi eux des hommes qu’ils enverraient à Antioche avec Paul et Barnabé. C’étaient des hommes qui avaient de l’autorité parmi les frères: Jude, appelé aussi Barsabbas, et Silas. Voici ce qu’ils écrivirent de leur main: « Les Apôtres et les Anciens, vos frères, aux frères issus des nations, qui résident à Antioche, en Syrie et en Cilicie, salut ! Attendu que certains des nôtres, comme nous l’avons appris, sont allés, sans aucun mandat de notre part, tenir des propos qui ont jeté chez vous le trouble et le désarroi, nous avons pris la décision, à l’unanimité, de choisir des hommes que nous envoyons chez vous, avec nos frères bien-aimés Barnabé et Paul, eux qui ont fait don de leur vie pour le nom de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ. Nous vous envoyons donc Jude et Silas, qui vous confirmeront de vive voix ce qui suit: L’Esprit Saint et nous-mêmes avons décidé de ne pas faire peser sur vous d’autres obligations que celles-ci, qui s’imposent : vous abstenir des viandes offertes en sacrifice aux idoles, du sang, des viandes non saignées et des unions illégitimes. Vous agirez bien, si vous vous gardez de tout cela. Bon courage ! »

2ème lecture : Ap 21, 10-14. 22-23
Moi, Jean, j’ai vu un ange. En esprit, il m’emporta sur une grande et haute montagne ; il me montra la Ville sainte, Jérusalem, qui descendait du ciel, d’auprès de Dieu : elle avait en elle la gloire de Dieu ; son éclat était celui d’une pierre très précieuse, comme le jaspe cristallin. Elle avait une grande et haute muraille, avec douze portes et, sur ces portes, douze anges ; des noms y étaient inscrits : ceux des douze tribus des fils d’Israël. Il y avait trois portes à l’orient, trois au nord, trois au midi, et trois à l’occident. La muraille de la ville reposait sur douze fondations portant les douze noms des douze Apôtres de l’Agneau. Dans la ville, je n’ai pas vu de sanctuaire, car son sanctuaire, c’est le Seigneur Dieu, Souverain de l’univers, et l’Agneau. La ville n’a pas besoin du soleil ni de la lune pour l’éclairer, car la gloire de Dieu l’illumine : son luminaire, c’est l’Agneau.

Évangile : Jean 14, 23-29
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Si quelqu’un m’aime, il gardera ma parole; mon Père l’aimera, nous viendrons vers lui et, chez lui, nous nous ferons une demeure. Celui qui ne m’aime pas ne garde pas mes paroles. Or, la parole que vous entendez n’est pas de moi : elle est du Père, qui m’a envoyé. Je vous parle ainsi, tant que je demeure avec vous ; mais le Défenseur, l’Esprit Saint que le Père enverra en mon nom, lui, vous enseignera tout, et il vous fera souvenir de tout ce que je vous ai dit. Je vous laisse la paix, je vous donne ma paix ; ce n’est pas à la manière du monde que je vous la donne. Que votre cœur ne soit pas bouleversé ni effrayé. Vous avez entendu ce que je vous ai dit: Je m’en vais, et je reviens vers vous. Si vous m’aimiez, vous seriez dans la joie puisque je pars vers le Père, car le Père est plus grand que moi. Que nos prières montent vers toi, Seigneur, avec ces offrandes pour le sacrifice ; Dans ta bonté purifie-nous, et nous correspondrons davantage aux sacrements de ton amour. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Dans l’évangile Jésus rappelle l’exigence du vécu de l’amour qui se trouve au centre de la trilogie Amour – Parole de Dieu – Joie. Le vécu de l’amour nous rapproche des exigences de la Parole de Dieu; et vivre de sous le spectre de la du Seigneur nous plonge dans l’euphorie de la joie.

1ère lecture : Act 16, 1-10
En ces jours-là, Paul, qui avait quitté Antioche avec Silas, arriva ensuite à Derbé, puis à Lystres. Il y avait là un disciple nommé Timothée ; sa mère était une Juive devenue croyante, mais son père était grec. À Lystres et à Iconium, les frères lui rendaient un bon témoignage. Paul désirait l’emmener ; il le prit avec lui et le fit circoncire à cause des Juifs de la région, car ils savaient tous que son père était grec. Dans les villes où Paul et ses compagnons passaient, ils transmettaient les décisions prises par les Apôtres et les Anciens de Jérusalem, pour qu’elles entrent en vigueur. Les Églises s’affermissaient dans la foie le nombre de leurs membres augmentait chaque jour. Paul et ses compagnons traversèrent la Phrygie et le pays des Galates, car le Saint-Esprit les avait empêchés de dire la Parole dans la province d’Asie. Arrivés en Mysie, ils essayèrent d’atteindre la Bithynie, mais l’Esprit de Jésus s’y opposa. Ils longèrent alors la Mysie et descendirent jusqu’à Troas. Pendant la nuit, Paul eut une vision: un Macédonien lui apparut, debout, qui lui faisait cette demande : « Passe en Macédoine et viens à notre secours. » À la suite de cette vision de Paul, nous avons aussitôt cherché à partir pour la Macédoine, car nous en avons déduit que Dieu nous appelait à y porter la Bonne Nouvelle.

La grâce qui jaillit de la vie chrétienne ne nous extirpe pas de des contrariétés que nous pouvons rencontrer en ce monde. La vie chrétienne est une vie à la suite du Christ. A la suite de notre Seigneur, nous rencontrons donc la haine, les insultes, la méchanceté la colère et toute autres contrariétés que lui-même a rencontré.

First reading : Acts 16:1-10
From Cilicia Paul went to Derbe, and then on to Lystra. Here there was a disciple called Timothy, whose mother was a Jewess who had become a believer; but his father was a Greek. The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of Timothy, and Paul, who wanted to have him as a travelling companion, had him circumcised. This was on account of the Jews in the locality where everyone knew his father was a Greek. As they visited one town after another, they passed on the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem, with instructions to respect them. So the Churches grew strong in the faith, as well as growing daily in numbers. They travelled through Phrygia and the Galatian country, having been told by the Holy Spirit not to preach the word in Asia. When they reached the frontier of Mysia they thought to cross it into Bithynia, but as the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them, they went through Mysia and came down to Troas. One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and appealed to him in these words, ‘Come across to Macedonia and help us.’ Once he had seen this vision we lost no time in arranging a passage to Macedonia, convinced that God had called us to bring them the Good News.

Meditation
“A servant is not greater than his master”. In society today, the traditional servant-master relationship is still very much alive. It may not be in the ancient sense where masters owned slaves, who were at their service. This employer-employee relationship has not stopped, it has merely changed form. This is evident in various fields where individuals either have a boss or are bosses to others. The success of this professional relationship depends on the quality of the interactions between both parties. Do those in a servant role show respect to their masters and render their services with love? How do those in positions of responsibility treat those who work under their authority? Is it with love, compassion, and fairness, or is there mistreatment and even abuse? Let us seek the grace to emulate the servant leadership of Jesus, who came to serve rather than to be served, thus fostering a workplace environment that is characterised by service and love.

He became a priest in the 1720s and worked tirelessly in Rome on behalf of homeless women, the sick, prisoners and workers, becoming a very popular confessor. Owing to his selfless desire to assist the needy and downtrodden, he eventually succumbed to illness and died on May 23, 1764.

First reading : Acts 15:22-31
The apostles and elders decided to choose delegates to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; the whole Church concurred with this. They chose Judas known as Barsabbas and Silas, both leading men in the brotherhood, and gave them this letter to take with them: ‘The apostles and elders, your brothers, send greetings to the brothers of pagan birth in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia. We hear that some of our members have disturbed you with their demands and have unsettled your minds. They acted without any authority from us; and so we have decided unanimously to elect delegates and to send them to you with Barnabas and Paul, men we highly respect who have dedicated their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accordingly we are sending you Judas and Silas, who will confirm by word of mouth what we have written in this letter. It has been decided by the Holy Spirit and by ourselves not to saddle you with any burden beyond these essentials: you are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols; from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what is right. Farewell.’ The party left and went down to Antioch, where they summoned the whole community and delivered the letter. The community read it and were delighted with the encouragement it gave them.

Meditation
The core of all Jesus’ teachings is embedded in the principle of love, as He instructs us today to love one another. When we look at our society, with its alarming rates of killing, kidnapping, conflicts, and other social ills, we cannot help but wonder, “Where is the love?” The world would undoubtedly be a better place if Christians could wholeheartedly embrace this commandment of love. If I truly love you, I will not speak ill of you. True love requires that we, who occupy positions of responsibility, refrain from embezzling public funds meant for the good of all. The root cause of all the social ills our society is suffering from lies in the absence of love. Love puts the interests of others first and operates without selfish motives. As a Christian, do I actively strive every day not to demonstrate our commitment to the commandment of love, not just in words but through our actions?

1ère lecture : Act 15, 22-31
En ces jours-là, les Apôtres et les Anciens décidèrent avec toute l’Église de choisir parmi eux des hommes qu’ils enverraient à Antioche avec Paul et Barnabé. C’étaient des hommes qui avaient de l’autorité parmi les frères : Jude, appelé aussi Barsabbas, et Silas. Voici ce qu’ils écrivirent de leur main : « Les Apôtres et les Anciens, vos frères, aux frères issus des nations, qui résident à Antioche, en Syrie et en Cilicie, salut ! Attendu que certains des nôtres, comme nous l’avons appris, sont allés, sans aucun mandat de notre part, tenir des propos qui ont jeté chez vous le trouble et le désarroi, nous avons pris la décision, à l’unanimité, de choisir des hommes que nous envoyons chez vous, avec nos frères bien-aimés Barnabé et Paul, eux qui ont fait don de leur vie pour le nom de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ. Nous vous envoyons donc Jude et Silas, qui vous confirmeront de vive voix ce qui suit : L’Esprit Saint et nous-mêmes avons décidé de ne pas faire peser sur vous d’autres obligations que celles-ci, qui s’imposent : vous abstenir des viandes offertes en sacrifice aux idoles, du sang, des viandes non saignées et des unions illégitimes. Méditation
Jésus nous fait comprendre que le plus grand amour est de donner sa vie pour ceux qu’on aime. Ceux qui sont capables de mettre de côtés leurs intérêts égoïstes, de faire fi d’eux-mêmes pour penser aux autres, ceux-là deviennent les préférés de Dieu. En effet ils deviennent ses amis parce qu’ils font ce que le seigneur recommande.

First reading : Acts 15:7-21
After the discussion had gone on a long time, Peter stood up and addressed the apostles and the elders. ‘My brothers,’ he said ‘you know perfectly well that in the early days God made his choice among you: the pagans were to learn the Good News from me and so become believers. In fact God, who can read everyone’s heart, showed his approval of them by giving the Holy Spirit to them just as he had to us. God made no distinction between them and us, since he purified their hearts by faith. It would only provoke God’s anger now, surely, if you imposed on the disciples the very burden that neither we nor our ancestors were strong enough to support? Remember, we believe that we are saved in the same way as they are: through the grace of the Lord Jesus.’ This silenced the entire assembly, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul describing the signs and wonders God had worked through them among the pagans. When they had finished it was James who spoke. ‘My brothers,’ he said ‘listen to me. Simeon has described how God first arranged to enlist a people for his name out of the pagans. This is entirely in harmony with the words of the prophets, since the scriptures say: After that I shall return and rebuild the fallen House of David; I shall rebuild it from its ruins and restore it. Then the rest of mankind, all the pagans who are consecrated to my name, will look for the Lord, says the Lord who made this known so long ago. ‘I rule, then, that instead of making things more difficult for pagans who turn to God, we send them a letter telling them merely to abstain from anything polluted by idols, from fornication, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. For Moses has always had his preachers in every town, and is read aloud in the synagogues every sabbath.’

Meditation
Joy is a universal desire, yet the ways people pursue it, or the places they search for it, vary from person to person. Some seek joy in alcohol, drugs, sex, luxury cars, houses, and more. Unfortunately, the “joy” derived from these pursuits is never sufficient to satiates the heart’s thirst. The more one seeks joy in alcohol, the more one drinks, leading to an alcohol dependency and a realisation that the emptiness that led to the alcohol abuse still persists. This pattern applies to all the other avenues mentioned above. Jesus stands as the only source of true joy. He is the only one in whom our joy can find fulfillment. The only path to complete and lasting joy is to seek the joy Christ bring us. That is why He says: “I have told you this so that my own joy may be in you and your joy be complete”. Let us earnestly seek the grace to be filled with the joy of Christ, transforming us into wholly joyful children of God.
