Born in France in 1831, Joseph Gerard joined the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and later was sent to South Africa. He worked among the Zulu in Natal for ten years before being sent to the Basuto, in today’s Lesotho: he was known as “the Apostle of the Basuto”.

Men of Galilee, why gaze in wonder at the heavens? This Jesus whom you saw ascending into heaven will return as you saw him go, alleluia.

Gladden us with holy joys, almighty God, and make us rejoice with devout thanksgiving, for the Ascension of Christ your Son is our exaltation, and, where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to follow in hope. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 1:1-11
In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was taken up to heaven. He had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he had continued to appear to them and tell them about the kingdom of God. When he had been at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. What you have heard me speak about: John baptised with water but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.’ Now having met together, they asked him, ‘Lord, has the time come? Are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth.’ As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. They were still staring into the sky when suddenly two men in white were standing near them and they said, ‘Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking into the sky? Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, this same Jesus will come back in the same way as you have seen him go there.’

Second Reading : Ephesians 1:17-23
May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a spirit of wisdom and perception of what is revealed, to bring you to full knowledge of him. May he enlighten the eyes of your mind so that you can see what hope his call holds for you, what rich glories he has promised the saints will inherit and how infinitely great is the power that he has exercised for us believers. This you can tell from the strength of his power at work in Christ, when he used it to raise him from the dead and to make him sit at his right hand, in heaven, far above every Sovereignty, Authority, Power, or Domination, or any other name that can be named not only in this age but also in the age to come. He has put all things under his feet and made him, as the ruler of everything, the head of the Church; which is his body, the fullness of him who fills the whole creation.

Gospel : Luke 24:46-53
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to this. ‘And now I am sending down to you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city then, until you are clothed with the power from on high.’ Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy; and they were continually in the Temple praising God.

We offer sacrifice now in supplication, O Lord, to honour the wondrous Ascension of your Son: grant, we pray, that through this most holy exchange, we too, may rise up to the heavenly realms. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
Almighty ever-living God, who allow those on earth to celebrate divine mysteries, grant, we pray, that Christian hope may draw us onward to where our nature is united with you. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, forty days after his resurrection. This event is recited in the Apostle’s Creed: “He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.” The ascension serves as a beacon of hope for us, signifying that as members of His body, we too shall follow the Head to the place He has prepared for us. This hope should provide solace for us, especially during times we feel tempted to abandon the pursuit of eternal life. The Lord, however, does not call us to idleness, or to merely gaze in the sky, as seen with His disciples. Instead, we are called to be ambassadors of Christ in our homes, offices, and businesses. May God the Father grant us the grace to be found worthy to ascend to Him when our earthly journey ends.

1ère lecture : Act 17, 15.22 – 18, 1
En ces jours-là, ceux qui escortaient Paule conduisirent jusqu’à Athènes. Puis ils s’en retournèrent, porteurs d’un message, avec l’ordre, pour Silas et Timothée, de rejoindre Paul le plus tôt possible Alors Paul, debout au milieu de l’Aréopage, fit ce discours: « Athéniens, je peux observer que vous êtes, en toutes choses, des hommes particulièrement religieux. En effet, en me promenant et en observant vos monuments sacrés, j’ai même trouvé un autel avec cette inscription : “Au dieu inconnu.” Or, ce que vous vénérez sans le connaître, voilà ce que, moi, je viens vous annoncer. Le Dieu qui a fait le monde et tout ce qu’il contient, lui qui est Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, n’habite pas des sanctuaires faits de main d’homme ; il n’est pas non plus servi par des mains humaines, comme s’il avait besoin de quoi que ce soit, lui qui donne à tous la vie, le souffle et tout le nécessaire. Cependant quelques hommes s’attachèrent à lui et devinrent croyants. Parmi eux, il y avait Denys, membre de l’Aréopage, et une femme nommée Damaris, ainsi que d’autres avec eux. Après cela, Paul s’éloigna d’Athènes et se rendit à Corinthe.

Méditation
Une vérité se dégage du discours de saint Paul à Athènes : la connaissance de Dieu est progressive. Les athéniens l’adoraient sans le nommer, et donc sans le connaitre véritablement, jusqu’à ce que l’apôtre vienne le leur annoncer. C’est donc dans cette logique que Jésus annonce aux apôtres que l’Esprit Saint viendra pour leur apprendre ce que jusque là ils n’avaient pas pu porter. Nous devons ainsi nous mettre à l’écoute et à la disposition de l’Esprit Saint qui vient nous apprendre toutes choses nouvelles.

Saint Augustine of Canterbury (- 605)

Augustine was consecrated archbishop of the English, and then returned to Canterbury to set up his see. The mission prospered, and he founded two more sees, at London and at Rochester in Kent. Augustine died at Canterbury on 26 May 605.

Paul’s escort took him as far as Athens, and went back with instructions for Silas and Timothy to rejoin Paul as soon as they could. So Paul stood before the whole Council of the Areopagus and made this speech: ‘Men of Athens, I have seen for myself how extremely scrupulous you are in all religious matters, because I noticed, as I strolled round admiring your sacred monuments, that you had an altar inscribed: To An Unknown God. Well, the God whom I proclaim is in fact the one whom you already worship without knowing it. ‘Since the God who made the world and everything in it is himself Lord of heaven and earth, he does not make his home in shrines made by human hands. Nor is he dependent on anything that human hands can do for him, since he can never be in need of anything; on the contrary, it is he who gives everything – including life and breath – to everyone. From one single stock he not only created the whole human race so that they could occupy the entire earth, but he decreed how long each nation should flourish and what the boundaries of its territory should be. And he did this so that all nations might seek the deity and, by feeling their way towards him, succeed in finding him. Meditation
When Paul arrives in Athens, the heart of Greek cultural and religious expression, the inhabitants of the town are eager to listen to him. Christians should be bearers of glad tidings that capture the attention of all. In today’s society, people often seek credentials or or a well-furnished CV before respecting someone addressing them. As Christians, we must equip ourselves with knowledge and strive for personal development to effectively proclaim the Good News with authority. However, academic achievements alone are not sufficient to lend authority to our preaching. The true source of authority for the Good News, earning us the respect of others, lies in them being able to witness Christ in us. Pray always for the grace to preach the Word of God in the contemporary “Athens” of our time, primarily through our way of life.

Envoyé avec d’autres moines romains par le pape saint Grégoire le Grand pour annoncer l’Évangile au peuple des Angles, il fut accueilli avec bienveillance par le roi du Kent, Éthelbert, et imitant la vie apostolique de l’Église primitive, il convertit à la foi chrétienne le roi lui-même et beaucoup de son peuple, et établit plusieurs sièges épiscopaux sur cette terre. Il mourut le 26 mai, vers 604.

1ère lecture : Act 16, 22-34
En ces jours-là, dans la ville de Philippes, la foule se déchaîna contre Paul et Silas. Les magistrats ordonnèrent de leur arracher les vêtements pour leur donner la bastonnade. Après les avoir roués de coups, on les jeta en prison, en donnant au geôlier la consigne de les surveiller de près. Pour appliquer cette consigne, il les mit tout au fond de la prison, avec les pieds coincés dans des blocs de bois. Vers le milieu de la nuit, Paul et Silas priaient et chantaient les louanges de Dieu, et les autres détenus les écoutaient. Tout à coup, il y eut un violent tremblement de terre, qui secoua les fondations de la prison: à l’instant même, toutes les portes s’ouvrirent, et les liens de tous les détenus se détachèrent. Le geôlier, tiré de son sommeil, vit que les portes de la prison étaient ouvertes; croyant que les détenus s’étaient évadés, il dégaina son épée et il était sur le point de se donner la mort. Mais Paul se mit à crier d’une voix forte : « Ne va pas te faire de mal, nous sommes tous là. » Ayant réclamé de la lumière, le geôlier se précipita et, tout tremblant, se jeta aux pieds de Paul et de Silas. Puis il les emmena dehors et leur demanda: « Que dois-je faire pour être sauvé, mes seigneurs ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Crois au Seigneur Jésus, et tu seras sauvé, toi et toute ta maison. » Ils lui annoncèrent la parole du Seigneur, ainsi qu’à tous ceux qui vivaient dans sa maison. À l’heure même, en pleine nuit, le geôlier les emmena pour laver leurs plaies. Aussitôt, il reçut le baptême avec tous les siens. Puis il fit monter chez lui Paul et Silas, il fit préparer la table et, avec toute sa maison, il laissa déborder sa joie de croire en Dieu.

Pourtant, je vous dis la vérité : il vaut mieux pour vous que je m’en aille, car, si je ne m’en vais pas, le Défenseur ne viendra pas à vous ; mais si je pars, je vous l’enverrai. Quand il viendra, il établira la culpabilité du mondée matière de péché, de justice et de jugement. En matière de péché, puisqu’on ne croit pas en moi. En matière de justice, puisque je m’en vais auprès du Père, et que vous ne me verrez plus. En matière de jugement, puisque déjà le prince de ce monde est jugé. »

Donne-nous, Seigneur, de te rendre grâce toujours par ces mystères de Pâques ; ils continuent en nous ton œuvre de rédemption, qu’il nous soit une source intarissable de joie. Par Jésus.

Méditation
L’expérience du geôlier nous rappelle une dimension essentielles de la vie chrétienne: la foi en Jésus-Christ, mort et ressuscité, est un engagement sur le chemin qui mène au salut. Le salut du genre humain se trouve en Dieu, et notre foi en lui nous porte irréversiblement vers ce salut. Il nous faut donc toujours avoir à l’esprit cette concordance entre la foi er le salut : il n’y a pas foi qui ne mène au salut, et il n’y a pas de salut sans la foi.

Saint Philip Neri (1515 – 1595)

He was born in Florence in 1515. At the age of eighteen he went to Rome, and earned his living as a tutor. He undertook much-needed charitable work among the young men of the city, and started a brotherhood to help the sick poor and pilgrims.

Grant, almighty and merciful God, that we may in truth receive a share in the Resurrection of Christ your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 16:22-34
The crowd joined in and showed their hostility to Paul and Silas, so the magistrates had them stripped and ordered them to be flogged. They were given many lashes and then thrown into prison, and the gaoler was told to keep a close watch on them. So, following his instructions, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. Late that night Paul and Silas were praying and singing God’s praises, while the other prisoners listened. Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison to its foundations. All the doors flew open and the chains fell from all the prisoners. When the gaoler woke and saw the doors wide open he drew his sword and was about to commit suicide, presuming that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, ‘Don’t do yourself any harm; we are all here.’ The gaoler called for lights, then rushed in, threw himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas, and escorted them out, saying, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ They told him, ‘Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, and your household too.’ Then they preached the word of the Lord to him and to all his family. Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised then and there with all his household. Afterwards he took them home and gave them a meal, and the whole family celebrated their conversion to belief in God.

Meditation
The account of Paul and Silas highlights the transformative power of prayers and praises directed to God. Their fervent prayers and songs of praise ascended to heaven, leading to the miraculous opening of the prison gates by the power of God. Those who entrust their lives to the Lord need not fear, knowing that He is capable of delivering them from any form of imprisonment. As Christians, confident that Christ never abandons His own, we should emulate the attitude of Paul and Silas each day. Turning to Christ in times of trouble, and seeking His intervention, becomes a vital practice. Like Paul and Silas, we are called to render our praises to God at all times.

1ère lecture : Act 16, 11-15
Avec Paul, de Troas nous avons gagné le large et filé tout droit sur l’île de Samothrace puis, le lendemain, sur Néapolis, et ensuite sur Philippes, qui est une cité du premier district de Macédoine et une colonie romaine. Nous avons passé un certain temps dans cette ville et, le jour du sabbat, nous en avons franchi la porte pour rejoindre le bord de la rivière, où nous pensions trouver un lieu de prière. Nous nous sommes assis, et nous avons parlé aux femmes qui s’étaient réunies. L’une d’elles nommée Lydie, une négociante en étoffes de pourpre, originaire de la ville de Thyatire, et qui adorait le Dieu unique, écoutait. Le Seigneur lui ouvrit l’esprit pour la rendre attentive à ce que disait Paul. Quand elle fut baptisée, elle et tous les gens de sa maison, elle nous adressa cette invitation : « Si vous avez reconnu ma foi au Seigneur, venez donc dans ma maison pour y demeurer. » C’est ainsi qu’elle nous a forcé la main.

La première lecture nous montre comment Lydie force la main des apôtres en les invitant dans sa demeure. L’écoute de la Bonne Nouvelle l’ayant fascinée, elle pense ainsi se mettre au service du Seigneur. Nous sommes tous appelés à comprendre que l’écoute de la parole de Dieu est une motivation dans la participation active à l’œuvre évangélisatrice.

First reading : Acts 16:11-15
Sailing from Troas we made a straight run for Samothrace; the next day for Neapolis, and from there for Philippi, a Roman colony and the principal city of that particular district of Macedonia. After a few days in this city we went along the river outside the gates as it was the sabbath and this was a customary place for prayer. We sat down and preached to the women who had come to the meeting. One of these women was called Lydia, a devout woman from the town of Thyatira who was in the purple-dye trade. She listened to us, and the Lord opened her heart to accept what Paul was saying. After she and her household had been baptised she sent us an invitation: ‘If you really think me a true believer in the Lord,’ she said ‘come and stay with us’; and she would take no refusal.

Meditation
In the first reading, Lydia, a devout woman and trader, extends hospitality to the messengers of the Good News. This message brings so much joy to her home that she accepts baptism for herself and her entire household. Lydia hears the Word of God and allows her heart to be touched by it, and she becomes a fervent follower of Christ. Reflecting on Lydia’s response, we should ask ourselves: “How do I react when the Word of God touches me?” “Do I make a firm resolution to change my way of life and become a more devout servant of the Lord, or do I continuously postpone my conversion?” Let us ask God for the grace to act promptly when we hear His Word, drawing closer to Him each day.

First reading : Acts 15:1-2,22-29
Some men came down from Judaea and taught the brothers, ‘Unless you have yourselves circumcised in the tradition of Moses you cannot be saved.’ This led to disagreement, and after Paul and Barnabas had had a long argument with these men it was arranged that Paul and Barnabas and others of the church should go up to Jerusalem and discuss the problem with the apostles and elders. Then the apostles and elders decided to choose delegates to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; the whole church concurred with this. They chose Judas known as Barsabbas and Silas, both leading men in the brotherhood, and gave them this letter to take with them: ‘The apostles and elders, your brothers, send greetings to the brothers of pagan birth in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia. We hear that some of our members have disturbed you with their demands and have unsettled your minds. Meditation
After Christ’s ascension into heaven, the church began to encounter multiple crises due to her growth. As she expanded to other nations, problems of customs and traditions inevitably arose. However, these crises have never succeeded to destroy the church. At any given point in her history, she has navigated through whatever crises have arisen and found solutions to remedy them. This resilience is attributed to the presence of the Advocate the Lord promised to send to be her guide. Christ did not abandon His church. Through the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, He is always with us, not only helping us remember what He taught us but also providing His assistance in times of trials and tribulations. Let us seek the grace to be always receptive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

1ère lecture : Act 15, 1-2.22-29
En ces jours-là, des gens, venus de Judée à Antioche, enseignaient les frères en disant : « Si vous n’acceptez pas la circoncision selon la coutume qui vient de Moïse, vous ne pouvez pas être sauvés. » Cela provoqua un affrontement ainsi qu’une vive discussion engagée par Paul et Barnabé contre ces gens-là. Alors on décida que Paul et Barnabé, avec quelques autres frères, monteraient à Jérusalem auprès des Apôtres et des Anciens pour discuter de cette question. Les Apôtres et les Anciens décidèrent avec toute l’Église de choisir parmi eux des hommes qu’ils enverraient à Antioche avec Paul et Barnabé. C’étaient des hommes qui avaient de l’autorité parmi les frères: Jude, appelé aussi Barsabbas, et Silas. Voici ce qu’ils écrivirent de leur main: « Les Apôtres et les Anciens, vos frères, aux frères issus des nations, qui résident à Antioche, en Syrie et en Cilicie, salut ! Attendu que certains des nôtres, comme nous l’avons appris, sont allés, sans aucun mandat de notre part, tenir des propos qui ont jeté chez vous le trouble et le désarroi, nous avons pris la décision, à l’unanimité, de choisir des hommes que nous envoyons chez vous, avec nos frères bien-aimés Barnabé et Paul, eux qui ont fait don de leur vie pour le nom de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ. Nous vous envoyons donc Jude et Silas, qui vous confirmeront de vive voix ce qui suit: L’Esprit Saint et nous-mêmes avons décidé de ne pas faire peser sur vous d’autres obligations que celles-ci, qui s’imposent : vous abstenir des viandes offertes en sacrifice aux idoles, du sang, des viandes non saignées et des unions illégitimes. Vous agirez bien, si vous vous gardez de tout cela. Bon courage ! »

Moi, Jean, j’ai vu un ange. En esprit, il m’emporta sur une grande et haute montagne ; il me montra la Ville sainte, Jérusalem, qui descendait du ciel, d’auprès de Dieu : elle avait en elle la gloire de Dieu ; son éclat était celui d’une pierre très précieuse, comme le jaspe cristallin. Elle avait une grande et haute muraille, avec douze portes et, sur ces portes, douze anges ; des noms y étaient inscrits : ceux des douze tribus des fils d’Israël. Il y avait trois portes à l’orient, trois au nord, trois au midi, et trois à l’occident. La muraille de la ville reposait sur douze fondations portant les douze noms des douze Apôtres de l’Agneau. Dans la ville, je n’ai pas vu de sanctuaire, car son sanctuaire, c’est le Seigneur Dieu, Souverain de l’univers, et l’Agneau. La ville n’a pas besoin du soleil ni de la lune pour l’éclairer, car la gloire de Dieu l’illumine : son luminaire, c’est l’Agneau.

Dans l’évangile Jésus rappelle l’exigence du vécu de l’amour qui se trouve au centre de la trilogie Amour – Parole de Dieu – Joie. Le vécu de l’amour nous rapproche des exigences de la Parole de Dieu; et vivre de sous le spectre de la du Seigneur nous plonge dans l’euphorie de la joie.

1ère lecture : Act 16, 1-10
En ces jours-là, Paul, qui avait quitté Antioche avec Silas, arriva ensuite à Derbé, puis à Lystres. Il y avait là un disciple nommé Timothée ; sa mère était une Juive devenue croyante, mais son père était grec. À Lystres et à Iconium, les frères lui rendaient un bon témoignage. Paul désirait l’emmener ; il le prit avec lui et le fit circoncire à cause des Juifs de la région, car ils savaient tous que son père était grec. Dans les villes où Paul et ses compagnons passaient, ils transmettaient les décisions prises par les Apôtres et les Anciens de Jérusalem, pour qu’elles entrent en vigueur. Les Églises s’affermissaient dans la foie le nombre de leurs membres augmentait chaque jour. Paul et ses compagnons traversèrent la Phrygie et le pays des Galates, car le Saint-Esprit les avait empêchés de dire la Parole dans la province d’Asie. Arrivés en Mysie, ils essayèrent d’atteindre la Bithynie, mais l’Esprit de Jésus s’y opposa. Ils longèrent alors la Mysie et descendirent jusqu’à Troas. Pendant la nuit, Paul eut une vision: un Macédonien lui apparut, debout, qui lui faisait cette demande : « Passe en Macédoine et viens à notre secours. » À la suite de cette vision de Paul, nous avons aussitôt cherché à partir pour la Macédoine, car nous en avons déduit que Dieu nous appelait à y porter la Bonne Nouvelle.

La grâce qui jaillit de la vie chrétienne ne nous extirpe pas de des contrariétés que nous pouvons rencontrer en ce monde. La vie chrétienne est une vie à la suite du Christ.
