Prince de la maison de Wessex. Il règne sur le royaume d’Angleterre de 1042 jusqu’à sa mort. Son règne est marqué par la paix et la prospérité. Sa grande piété lui vaut son surnom et le fait d’être ensuite canonisé en 1161. Trente-six ans après sa mort, on aurait ouvert son tombeau sans constater la moindre trace de décomposition du corps.

1ère lecture : 2 S 24, 2.9-17
En ces jours-là, le roi David dit à Joab, le chef de l’armée, qui était près de lui : «Parcourez toutes les tribus d’Israël, de Dane à Bershéba, et faites le recensement du peuple, afin que je connaisse le chiffre de la population.» Joab donna au roi les chiffres du recensement: Israël comptait huit cent mille hommes capables de combattre, et Juda cinq cent mille hommes. Mais après cela, le cœur de David lui battit d’avoir recensé le peuple, et il dit au Seigneur: «C’est un grand péché que j’ai commis! Maintenant, Seigneur, daigne passer sur la faute de ton serviteur, car je me suis vraiment conduit comme un insensé!» Le lendemain matin, David se leva. Or la parole du Seigneur avait été adressée au prophète Gad, le voyant attaché à David : «Va dire à David: Ainsi parle le Seigneur: Je vais te présenter trois châtiments; choisis l’un d’entre eux, et je te l’infligerai.» Gad se rendit alors chez David et lui transmit ce message: «Préfères-tu qu’il y ait la famine dans ton pays pendant sept ans? Ou bien fuir devant tes adversaires lancés à ta poursuite, pendant trois mois? Ou bien la peste dans ton pays pendant trois jours? Réfléchis donc, et vois ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m’a envoyé.» David répondit au prophète Gad: «Je suis dans une grande angoisse… Eh bien ! tombons plutôt entre les mains du Seigneur, car sa compassion est grande, mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes!» Le Seigneur envoya donc la peste en Israël dès le lendemain jusqu’à la fin des trois jours. Depuis Dane jusqu’à Bershéba, il mourut 70 000 hommes. Mais lorsque l’ange du Seigneur étendit la main vers Jérusalem pour l’exterminer, le Seigneur renonça à ce mal, et il dit à l’ange exterminateur : «Assez ! Maintenant, retire ta main. » L’ange du Seigneur se trouvait alors près de l’aire à grain d’Arauna le Jébuséen. David, en voyant l’ange frapper le peuple, avait dit au Seigneur : «C’est moi qui ai péché, c’est moi qui suis coupable ; mais ceux-là, le troupeau, qu’ont-ils fait? Que ta main s’appesantisse donc sur moi et sur la maison de mon père!»
Psaume : 31 (32), 1-2, 5, 6, 7
R/ Enlève, Seigneur, l’offense de ma faute.
- Heureux l’homme dont la faute est enlevée, et le péché remis! Heureux l’homme dont le Seigneur ne retient pas l’offense, dont l’esprit est sans fraude!
- Je t’ai fait connaître ma faute, je n’ai pas caché mes torts. J’ai dit : «Je rendrai grâce au Seigneur en confessant mes péchés.» Et toi, tu as enlevé l’offense de ma faute.

Évangile : Mc 6, 1-6
En ce temps-là, Jésus se rendit dans son lieu d’origine, et ses disciples le suivirent. Le jour du sabbat, il se mit à enseigner dans la synagogue. De nombreux auditeurs, frappés d’étonnement, disaient: «D’où cela lui vient-il? Quelle est cette sagesse qui lui a été donnée, et ces grands miracles qui se réalisent par ses mains? N’est-il pas le charpentier, le fils de Marie, et le frère de Jacques, de José, de Jude et de Simon? Ses sœurs ne sont-elles pas ici chez nous?» Et ils étaient profondément choqués à son sujet. Jésus leur disait: «Un prophète n’est méprisé que dans son pays, sa parenté et sa maison.» Et là il ne pouvait accomplir aucun miracle; il guérit seulement quelques malades en leur imposant les mains. Et il s’étonna de leur manque de foi. Alors Jésus parcourait les villages d’alentour en enseignant.

Méditation
Bien-aimé de Dieu, l’attitude que décrit le Christ aujourd’hui est celle dont nous faisons montre chaque jour tandis qu’il cherche à nous parler à travers nos proches. Bien des fois, nous manifestons ce manque de foi lorsque par exemple, nous avons vécu avec un frère ou une sœur qui avait beaucoup de défaut un qui avec le temps devient un consacré. Il souvent impossible pour lui de nous évangélisé parce que nous nous renfermons constamment sur ses origines et les trais de sa personnalité. Dieu, pour nous instruire, à besoin de ses médiations humaines fussent-elles nos familiers. Nous sommes donc appelés à les écouter afin de ne pas passer à coté de ses grâces.

First reading: 2 Samuel 24:2, 9-17
King David said to Joab and the leaders of the army who were with him, “Tour all the tribes in Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba and register the people, that I may know their number.” Joab then reported to the king the number of people registered: in Israel, eight hundred thousand men fit for military service; in Judah, five hundred thousand. Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people, and said to the Lord: “I have sinned grievously in what I have done. But now, Lord, forgive the guilt of your servant, for I have been very foolish.” When David rose in the morning, the Lord had spoken to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying: “Go and say to David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I offer you three alternatives; choose one of them, and I will inflict it on you.'” Gad then went to David to inform him. He asked: “Do you want a three years’ famine to come upon your land, or to flee from your enemy three months while he pursues you, or to have a three days’ pestilence in your land? Now consider and decide what I must reply to him who sent me.” David answered Gad: “I am in very serious difficulty. Let us fall by the hand of God, for he is most merciful; but let me not fall by the hand of man.” Thus David chose the pestilence. Now it was the time of the wheat harvest when the plague broke out among the people. The Lord then sent a pestilence over Israel from morning until the time appointed, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beer-sheba died. But when the angel stretched forth his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord regretted the calamity and said to the angel causing the destruction among the people, “Enough now! Stay your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. When David saw the angel who was striking the people, he said to the Lord: “It is I who have sinned; it is I, the shepherd, who have done wrong. But these are sheep; what have they done? Punish me and my kindred.”

Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Meditation
“He was amazed at their lack of faith.” David ordered a census in order to know how many subjects he had and how many soldiers he had at his service. In so doing, he forgot that his power came from God and his military victories were the result of God’s protection and not his own military might. The people of Nazareth rejected Jesus because they refused to see in him anything more than the ordinary person who had grown up in their midst; he could not be more than the person they knew him to be. Their attitude, like that of David, reflected a lack of trust. Lack of faith in God is at the root of all sin. We sin because we count on ourselves and not on God, because we refuse to allow God to be in control of our lives, because we fail to recognise the power of God. Let us, like David ask God for forgiveness for all the times when we have not trusted him, when we have counted on ourselves and not on him. Let us reaffirm our belief in Jesus and allow him to work wonders in our lives. Let us ask Jesus to increase our faith.

Absalom unexpectedly came up against David’s servants. He was mounted on a mule, and, as the mule passed under the branches of a large terebinth, his hair caught fast in the tree. He hung between heaven and earth while the mule he had been riding ran off. Someone saw this and reported to Joab that he had seen Absalom hanging from a terebinth. And taking three pikes in hand, he thrust for the heart of Absalom, still hanging from the tree alive. Now David was sitting between the two gates, and a lookout went up to the roof of the gate above the city wall, where he looked about and saw a man running all alone. The lookout shouted to inform the king, who said, “If he is alone, he has good news to report.” The king said, “Step aside and remain in attendance here.” So he stepped aside and remained there. When the Cushite messenger came in, he said, “Let my lord the king receive the good news that this day the Lord has taken your part, freeing you from the grasp of all who rebelled against you.” But the king asked the Cushite, “Is young Absalom safe?” The Cushite replied, “May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rebel against you with evil intent be as that young man!” The king was shaken, and went up to the room over the city gate to weep. He said as he wept, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!” Joab was told that the king was weeping and mourning for Absalom; and that day’s victory was turned into mourning for the whole army when they heard that the king was grieving for his son.

When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea. One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, “My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.” He went off with him and a large crowd followed him. There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse. She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. She said, “If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.” Immediately her flow of blood dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who has touched my clothes?” But his disciples said to him, “You see how the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, Who touched me?” And he looked around to see who had done it. The woman, realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction.” While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official’s house arrived and said, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?” Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. So he went in and said to them, “Why this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.” And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out. He took along the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was. He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. At that they were utterly astounded. He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.

Meditation
“Do not be afraid; just have faith.” David was facing a rebellion led by his own son, Absalom, and he had had to flee for his life; but God came to his rescue and delivered him. Jairus came to Jesus because he believed that Jesus could save his daughter from death. Even when he was told his daughter had died, he stayed with Jesus because Jesus asked him to have faith. The woman with haemorrhage touched Jesus’ clothes because she was convinced that just that act would bring her healing. These three people teach us one lesson: absolute trust in the power and mercy of Jesus. Like them, we come up against hurdles and go through crises in life: we have to deal with unemployment, economic hardship, sickness, the loss of loved ones, challenges in our workplaces etc. When these moments come, let us turn to Jesus in faith. Let us go to him in prayer and remain committed to his precepts. Like Jairus and the sick woman, let us go to him with the firm conviction that he has a solution to our problems. Jesus tells us today not to be afraid, but to have faith in him.

SAINT BLAISE DE SEBASTE, EVEQUE ET MARTYR

Evêque de Sébaste, il naquit en Arménie et fut décapité pour la foi au Christ vers 316. Sa légende fit de lui un saint très populaire, spécialement invoqué pour les maux de gorge. Saint Anschaire, évêque Moine bénédictin de Corbie, en Picardie, puis de la Nouvelle Corbie, en Saxe, Anschaire (801-865) partit évangéliser l’Allemagne du Nord, puis le Danemark et la Suède. Evêque de Hambourg, puis de Brême, il ne se découragea pas quand les invasions normandes menacèrent son œuvre et ruinèrent sa ville épiscopale. Celui qui fut “apôtre au dehors et moine au-dedans” est le type même du missionnaire qui sème dans la peine en attendant que d’autres moissonnent dans la joie.

En ces jours-là, dans sa fuite, Absalom se retrouva par hasard en face des serviteurs de David. Il montait un mulet, et le mulet s’engagea sous la ramure d’un grand térébinthe. La tête d’Absalom se prit dans les branches, et il resta entre ciel et terre, tandis que le mulet qui était sous lui continuait d’avancer. Quelqu’un l’aperçut et avertit Joab : «Je viens de voir Absalom suspendu dans un térébinthe.» Joab se saisit de trois épieux qu’il planta dans le coeur d’Absalom. David était assis à l’intérieur de la double porte de la ville. Un guetteur allait et venait sur la terrasse de la porte, au-dessus du rempart; comme il regardait au loin, il aperçut un homme seul qui courait. Le guetteur cria pour avertir le roi, et le roi dit : «S’il est seul, c’est qu’il a une bonne nouvelle à nous annoncer.» Le roi lui dit : «Écarte-toi et tiens-toi là.» Il s’écarta et attendit. Alors arriva l’Éthiopien, qui déclara : «Bonne nouvelle pour mon seigneur le roi! Le Seigneur t’a rendu justice aujourd’hui, en t’arrachant aux mains de tous ceux qui se dressaient contre toi.» Le roi demanda : «Le jeune Absalom est-il en bonne santé?» Et l’Éthiopien répondit : «Qu’ils aient le sort de ce jeune homme, les ennemis de mon seigneur le roi, et tous ceux qui se sont dressés contre toi pour le mal!» Alors le roi fut bouleversé, il monta dans la salle au-dessus de la porte, et il se mit à pleurer. Tout en marchant, il disait : «Mon fils Absalom! mon fils! mon fils Absalom! Pourquoi ne suis-je pas mort à ta place? Absalom, mon fils! mon fils!» On alla prévenir Joab : «Voici que le roi pleure : il est en deuil d’Absalom.» La victoire, ce jour-là, se changea en deuil pour toute l’armée, car elle apprit ce jour-là que le roi était dans l’affliction à cause de son fils. Et ce jour-là, l’armée rentra dans la ville à la dérobée, comme se dérobe une armée qui s’est couverte de honte en fuyant durant la bataille.

Évangile : Mc 5, 21-43
En ce temps-là, Jésus regagna en barque l’autre rive, et une grande foule s’assembla autour de lui. Il était au bord de la mer. Arrive un des chefs de synagogue, nommé Jaïre. Voyant Jésus, il tombe à ses pieds et le supplie instamment : «Ma fille, encore si jeune, est à la dernière extrémité. Viens lui imposer les mains pour qu’elle soit sauvée et qu’elle vive.» Jésus partit avec lui, et la foule qui le suivait était si nombreuse qu’elle l’écrasait. Or, une femme, qui avait des pertes de sang depuis douze ans… elle avait beaucoup souffert du traitement de nombreux médecins, et elle avait dépensé tous ses biens sans avoir la moindre amélioration; au contraire, son état avait plutôt empiré -… cette femme donc, ayant appris ce qu’on disait de Jésus, vint par derrière dans la foule et toucha son vêtement. Elle se disait en effet: «Si je parviens à toucher seulement son vêtement, je serai sauvée.» À l’instant, l’hémorragie s’arrêta, et elle ressentit dans son corps qu’elle était guérie de son mal. Aussitôt Jésus se rendit compte qu’une force était sortie de lui. Il se retourna dans la foule, et il demandait : «Qui a touché mes vêtements?» Ses disciples lui répondirent : «Tu vois bien la foule qui t’écrase, et tu demandes : “Qui m’a touché ?» Mais lui regardait tout autour pour voir celle qui avait fait cela. La femme, saisie de crainte et toute tremblante, sachant ce qui lui était arrivé, vint se jeter à ses pieds et lui dit toute la vérité. Jésus lui dit alors: «Ma fille, ta foi t’a sauvée. Va en paix et sois guérie de ton mal.» Comme il parlait encore, des gens arrivent de la maison de Jaïre, le chef de synagogue, pour dire à celui-ci: «Ta fille vient de mourir. À quoi bon déranger encore le Maître?» Jésus, surprenant ces mots, dit au chef de synagogue: «Ne crains pas, crois seulement.» Il ne laissa personne l’accompagner, sauf Pierre, Jacques, et Jean, le frère de Jacques. Ils arrivent à la maison du chef de synagogue. Jésus voit l’agitation, et des gens qui pleurent et poussent de grands cris. Il entre et leur dit: « Pourquoi cette agitation et ces pleurs? L’enfant n’est pas morte: elle dort.» Mais on se moquait de lui. Alors il met tout le monde dehors, prend avec lui le père et la mère de l’enfant, et ceux qui étaient avec lui; puis il pénètre là où reposait l’enfant. Il saisit la main de l’enfant, et lui dit: «Talitha koum», ce qui signifie: «Jeune fille, je te le dis, lève-toi!» Aussitôt la jeune fille se leva et se mit à marcher – elle avait en effet douze ans. Ils furent frappés d’une grande stupeur. Et Jésus leur ordonna fermement de ne le faire savoir à personne; puis il leur dit de la faire manger.

L’attitude de la femme hemorroisse dans l’évangile de ce jour, nous invite à savoir garder confiance lorsque nous sommes malmenés par les vents contraires. Nous devons malgré nos maladies, avoir le courage de toucher le Seigneur avec foi. Dans un autre sens, le Christ en posant la question de savoir qui l’a touché voudrait nous faire comprendre qu’il n’est pas insensible à nos prières. Quel que soit le nombre de prière qu’il reçoit, Dieu traite toujours le cas de chacun particulièrement et avec grand soin.

THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD (FEAST)

This celebrates the event when Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem, fulfilling the
Mosaic Law’s requirement to consecrate their firstborn son to God. The feast is also known as Candlemas because of the custom of blessing candles, symbolizing Christ as the light of the world. The presentation also commemorates Mary’s ritual purification, which was required 40 days after the birth of a child, according to the Mosaic Law. Candlemas marks the end of the liturgical season of Christmas.

Meditation
“Mary and Joseph took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.” The prophet Malachi spoke of the coming of the Lord. This prophecy was fulfilled by Jesus, and his presentation in the Temple was his first public appearance. Through Mary and Joseph, God presented his son Jesus to the Israelites and he also presents him to us. Over the ages, he has offered Jesus to us through his written Word and the teaching and witness of the Church. How do we receive him? Are we prepared to welcome him in our lives? Simeon and Anna are examples of people who were ready to receive Jesus. They had been living holy lives and expecting the Messiah, and when they saw him, they welcomed him with joy. Let us similarly embrace Jesus through a sincere profession of faith, obedience to his Word, and a life of witness to his name. Let us allow him to refine us like gold and purify us, in the words of Malachi, so that our lives may become a sacrifice pleasing and acceptable to him. It is only through him that we, like Simeon and Anna, can attain the fulfilment that we all seek in life.

PRESENTATION DU SEIGNEUR AU TEMPLE, JOURNEE INTERNATIONALE DE LA VIE CONSACREE

Pour accomplir la loi juive, Marie et Joseph viennent au Temple avec Jésus, car celui-ci, étant un premier-né, doit y être présenté. Luc relate cet événement pour mettre en relief le chemin par lequel Jésus passera pour accomplir sa mission de Sauveur universel. En effet, au moment où la Sainte Famille pénètre dans le Temple, l’Esprit Saint fait parler un vieillard qui reconnaît en Jésus le Serviteur annoncé par le livre d’Isaïe. Comme ce Serviteur, le fils de Marie souffrira la contradiction. C’est sous les traits d’un Messie souffrant qu’il réalisera les promesses faites à son peuple, représenté par deux vieillards, Syméon et Anne.

Deuxième lecture : He 2, 14-18
Puisque les enfants des hommes ont en commun le sang et la chair, Jésus a partagé, lui aussi, pareille condition : ainsi, par sa mort, il a pu réduire à l’impuissance celui qui possédait le pouvoir de la mort, c’est-à-dire le diable et il a rendu libres tous ceux qui, par crainte de la mort, passaient toute leur vie dans une situation d’esclaves. Car ceux qu’il prend en charge, ce ne sont pas les anges, c’est la descendance d’Abraham. Il lui fallait donc se rendre en tout semblable à ses frères, pour devenir un grand prêtre miséricordieux et digne de foi pour les relations avec Dieu, afin d’enlever les péchés du peuple. Et parce qu’il a souffert jusqu’au bout l’épreuve de sa Passion, il est capable de porter secours à ceux qui subissent une épreuve.

Quand fut accompli le temps prescrit par la loi de Moïse pour la purification, les parents de Jésus l’amenèrent à Jérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur, selon ce qui est écrit dans la Loi : Tout premier-né de sexe masculin sera consacré au Seigneur. Ils venaient aussi offrir le sacrifice prescrit par la loi du Seigneur : un couple de tourterelles ou deux petites colombes. Or, il y avait à Jérusalem un homme appelé Syméon. C’était un homme juste et religieux, qui attendait la Consolation d’Israël, et l’Esprit Saint était sur lui. Il avait reçu de l’Esprit Saint l’annonce qu’il ne verrait pas la mort avant d’avoir vu le Christ, le Messie du Seigneur. Sous l’action de l’Esprit, Syméon vint au Temple. Au moment où les parents présentaient l’enfant Jésus pour se conformer au rite de la Loi qui le concernait, Syméon reçut l’enfant dans ses bras, et il bénit Dieu en disant : « Maintenant, ô Maître souverain, tu peux laisser ton serviteur s’en aller en paix, selon ta parole. Car mes yeux ont vu le salut que tu préparais à la face des peuples : lumière qui se révèle aux nations et donne gloire à ton peuple Israël. » Le père et la mère de l’enfant s’étonnaient de ce qui était dit de lui. Syméon les bénit, puis il dit à Marie sa mère : « Voici que cet enfant provoquera la chute et le relèvement de beaucoup en Israël. Il sera un signe de contradiction — et toi, ton âme sera traversée d’un glaive — : ainsi seront dévoilées les pensées qui viennent du cœur d’un grand nombre. » Il y avait aussi une femme prophète, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d’Aser. Elle était très avancée en âge ; après sept ans de mariage, demeurée veuve, elle était arrivée à l’âge de 84 ans. Elle ne s’éloignait pas du Temple, servant Dieu jour et nuit dans le jeûne et la prière. Survenant à cette heure même, elle proclamait les louanges de Dieu et parlait de l’enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient la délivrance de Jérusalem. Lorsqu’ils eurent achevé tout ce que prescrivait la loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent en Galilée, dans leur ville de Nazareth. L’enfant, lui, grandissait et se fortifiait, rempli de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.

Accueille, Seigneur, avec bonté les dons de ton Église en fête : elle te les présente pour le sacrifice de ton Fils unique, puisque tu as voulu qu’il s’offre à toi comme l’Agneau sans tâche pour le salut du monde. Lui qui règne avec toi pour les siècles des siècles.

Méditation
La fête de la présentation du Seigneur est une opportunité pour les parents de revoir leurs attitudes à la naissance de leurs progénitures. Combien sont-ils qui trouvent utiles de présenter leurs nouveaux nés au Seigneur? Ce geste qui semble banal est, en réalité, un signe de reconnaissance à Dieu pour le don de l’enfant et, une occasion de lui demander de protéger celui ou celle qu’il nous a donné. Aucun parent ne pourrait par lui-même protéger un enfant. Dieu seul en est capable. Pour cela, il faut faire pour ces tout-petits, ce qu’ils ne peuvent pas faire par eux-même.

Meditation
“Happy are you.” Just as Moses went up to Mount Sinai and brought down the Law of the Old Covenant, Jesus goes up the mountain and gives the Law of the New Covenant to the people. This Law is a recipe for happiness; Jesus tells us that if we follow it we will find happiness in this life. We shall find happiness if we are spiritually poor, that is, if we acknowledge our nothingness and total dependence on God despite our material wealth or worldly positions. We shall find happiness if we unite our difficulties and challenges to the sufferings of Christ and turn to him for comfort. We shall find happiness if we are gentle and loving to those we encounter, and if we promote justice and fairness in society. We shall find happiness if we show mercy to those we meet, if we are advocates of peace and unity, and if we purify our intentions such that our words and actions are inspired by God’s Word. We shall find happiness if we remain faithful to God even when we are persecuted. To be a Christian is to be happy, and through the Beatitudes we shall attain happiness, in this world and in the next.

Au contraire, ce qu’il y a de fou dans le monde, voilà ce que Dieu a choisi, pour couvrir de confusion les sages; ce qu’il y a de faible dans le monde, voilà ce que Dieu a choisi, pour couvrir de confusion ce qui est fort ; ce qui est d’origine modeste, méprisé dans le monde, ce qui n’est pas, voilà ce que Dieu a choisi, pour réduire à rien ce qui est ; ainsi aucun être de chair ne pourra s’enorgueillir devant Dieu. En ce quatrième dimanche du temps ordinaire, le Christ dans l’évangile de Matthieu met en évidence les béatitudes assortis chacune d’une promesse. Ce bonheur parfait, il nous invite à le vivre sur la terre en vue du Royaume des cieux où ils sont éternels. La question que chacun devrait se poser en ce jour pour répondre à cette invitation est celle de savoir si, parmi les béatitudes citées, on retrouve une, voir plusieurs qui correspondent à ses habitus sociales.

He was born in Piedmont of a peasant family, and he was brought up by his widowed mother. He became a priest, and his particular concern was for the young. He settled in Turin, where, as in so many cities in the 19th century, the industrial revolution was bringing enormous movements of population and consequent social problems, especially for the young men who came there to work. John Bosco devoted himself to the care of the young, first of all by means of evening classes, to which hundreds came, and then by setting up a boarding-house for apprentices, and then workshops for their training and education.

First reading: 2 Samuel 12:1-7a, 10-17
The Lord sent Nathan to David, and when he came to him, Nathan said: “Judge this case for me! In a certain town there were two men, one rich, the other poor. The rich man had flocks and herds in great numbers. But the poor man had nothing at all except one little ewe lamb that he had bought. He nourished her, and she grew up with him and his children. She shared the little food he had and drank from his cup and slept in his bosom. She was like a daughter to him. Now, the rich man received a visitor, but he would not take from his own flocks and herds to prepare a meal for the wayfarer who had come to him. Instead he took the poor man’s ewe lamb and made a meal of it for his visitor.”
David grew very angry with that man and said to him: “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this merits death! He shall restore the ewe lamb fourfold because he has done this and has had no pity.” Then Nathan said to David: “You are the man! Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah to be your wife.’ Thus says the Lord: ‘I will bring evil upon you out of your own house. I will take your wives while you live to see it, and will give them to your neighbor. He shall lie with your wives in broad daylight. You have done this deed in secret, but I will bring it about in the presence of all Israel, and with the sun looking down.'”
Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan answered David: “The Lord on his part has forgiven your sin: you shall not die. But since you have utterly spurned the Lord by this deed, the child born to you must surely die.” Then Nathan returned to his house. The Lord struck the child that the wife of Uriah had borne to David, and it became desperately ill. David besought God for the child. He kept a fast, retiring for the night to lie on the ground clothed in sackcloth. The elders of his house stood beside him urging him to rise from the ground; but he would not, nor would he take food with them.

- A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. Cast me not out from your presence, and your Holy Spirit take not from me.

Gospel: Mark 4:35-41
On that day, as evening drew on, Jesus said to his disciples: “Let us cross to the other side.” Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus with them in the boat just as he was. And other boats were with him. A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up. Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. They woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up, re- buked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” They were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?”
Prayer over the Offerings
Receive, O Lord, we pray, the offerings placed on your altar in commemoration of blessed John Bosco, so that, as you brought him glory, you may, through these sacred mysteries, grant to us your pardon. Through Christ our Lord.
Communion Antiphon: Cf. Mt 24: 46-47
Blessed is the servant whom the Lord finds watching when he comes. Amen I say to you: He will put that servant in charge of all his property.
Prayer after Communion
May partaking at the heavenly table, almighty God, confirm and increase strength from on high in all who celebrate the feast day of blessed John Bosco, that we may preserve in integrity the gift of faith and walk in the path of salvation you trace for us. Through Christ our Lord.Meditation
“Create a clean heart in me, O Lord.” Jesus, by calming the storm, demonstrated his power over the forces of nature. He also showed that he is greater than the devil, because for the Jews the sea was a symbol of the forces of evil and darkness. If Jesus is greater than the devil, it means he is greater than sin, which we commit because of the devil’s temptation. He is greater than our weakness, and there is no sin that he cannot forgive. David had desired another man’s wife, committed adultery with her, and had her husband killed in order to have her. God in his justice condemned him, but when he acknowledged his sin, God in his mercy pardoned him. God is always ready to forgive us and give us another chance, if and only if we repent and turn back to him. May we always be aware of sin, and may we never hesitate to implore God’s mercy. His love and mercy are larger than our sinfulness; he will always grant us his forgiveness if we sincerely ask for it.

SAINT JEAN BOSCO, PRETRE

Dès son enfance, Jean Bosco (1815-1888) est attiré par le sacerdoce. Il se consacre à l’apostolat de la jeunesse populaire avec un sens pédagogique remarquable, une sérénité communicative nuancée d’humour et un dévouement sans limite. Dieu le soutient en multipliant les miracles en sa faveur.
Antienne d’ouverture : Ps 95, 1-6
« Laissez les enfants venir à moi, dit le Seigneur. Ne les empêchez pas, car le Royaume de Dieu est à ceux qui leur ressemblent. »
Prière d’ouverture :
Dieu qui as suscité saint Jean Bosco pour donner à la jeunesse un maître et un père, inspire-nous le même amour qui nous fera chercher le salut de nos frères en ne servant que toi seul. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : 2 S 12, 1-7a.10-17
En ces jours-là, le Seigneur envoya vers David le prophète Nathan qui alla le trouver et lui dit: «Dans une même ville, il y avait deux hommes; l’un était riche, l’autre était pauvre. Le riche avait des moutons et des bœufs en très grand nombre. Le pauvre n’avait rien qu’une brebis, une toute petite, qu’il avait achetée. Il la nourrissait, et elle grandissait chez lui au milieu de ses fils; elle mangeait de son pain, buvait de sa coupe, elle dormait dans ses bras: elle était comme sa fille. Un voyageur arriva chez l’homme riche. Pour préparer le repas de son hôte, celui-ci épargna ses moutons et ses bœufs. Il alla prendre la brebis du pauvre, et la prépara pour l’homme qui était arrivé chez lui.» Alors, David s’enflamma d’une grande colère contre cet homme, et dit à Nathan: « Par le Seigneur vivant, l’homme qui a fait cela mérite la mort! Et il remboursera la brebis au quadruple, pour avoir commis une telle action et n’avoir pas épargné le pauvre.» Alors Nathan dit à David: «Cet homme, c’est toi! Ainsi parle le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: Désormais, l’épée ne s’écartera plus jamais de ta maison, parce que tu m’as méprisé et que tu as pris la femme d’Ourias le Hittite pour qu’elle devienne ta femme. Ainsi parle le Seigneur: De ta propre maison, je ferai surgir contre toi le malheur. Je t’enlèverai tes femmes sous tes yeux et je les donnerai à l’un de tes proches, qui les prendra sous les yeux du soleil. Toi, tu as agi en cachette, mais moi, j’agirai à la face de tout Israël, et à la face du soleil!» David dit à Nathan: «J’ai péché contre le Seigneur!» Nathan lui répondit : « Le Seigneur a passé sur ton péché, tu ne mourras pas. Cependant, parce que tu as bafoué le Seigneur, le fils que tu viens d’avoir mourra.» Et Nathan retourna chez lui. Le Seigneur frappa l’enfant que la femme d’Ourias avait donné à David, et il tomba gravement malade. David implora Dieu pour le petit enfant: il jeûna strictement, et, quand il rentrait chez lui, il passait la nuit couché par terre. Les anciens de sa maison insistaient auprès de lui pour qu’il se relève, mais il refusa, et ne prit avec eux aucune nourriture.
Psaume: 50 (51), 12-13, 14-15, 16-17
R/ Crée en moi un cœur pur, ô mon Dieu.
- Crée en moi un cœur pur, ô mon Dieu, renouvelle et raffermis au fond de moi mon esprit. Ne me chasse pas loin de ta face, ne me reprends pas ton esprit saint.
- Rends-moi la joie d’être sauvé ; que l’esprit généreux me soutienne. Aux pécheurs, j’enseignerai tes chemins; vers toi, reviendront les égarés.
- Libère-moi du sang versé, Dieu, mon Dieu sauveur, et ma langue acclamera ta justice. Seigneur, ouvre mes lèvres, et ma bouche annoncera ta louange.

Évangile : Mc 4, 35-41
Ce jour-là, le soir venu, Jésus dit à ses disciples: « Passons sur l’autre rive.» Quittant la foule, ils emmenèrent Jésus, comme il était, dans la barque, et d’autres barques l’accompagnaient. Survient une violente tempête. Les vagues se jetaient sur la barque, si bien que déjà elle se remplissait. Lui dormait sur le coussin à l’arrière. Les disciples le réveillent et lui disent: «Maître, nous sommes perdus; cela ne te fait rien?» Réveillé, il menaça le vent et dit à la mer: « Silence, tais-toi!» Le vent tomba, et il se fit un grand calme. Jésus leur dit: « Pourquoi êtes-vous si craintifs? N’avez-vous pas encore la foi?» Saisis d’une grande crainte, ils se disaient entre eux: « Qui est-il donc, celui-ci, pour que même le vent et la mer lui obéissent ? »
Prière sur les offrandes :
Accepte, Seigneur, le sacrifice que ton peuple consacré t’offre aujourd’hui en l’honneur de saint Jean Bosco ; que notre participation à ce mystère fasse de nous les témoins de ta charité. Par Jésus.
Antienne de communion :
« Si vous ne changez pas pour devenir comme les petits enfants, dit le Seigneur, vous n’entrerez pas dans le Royaume des cieux. »
Prière après la communion :
Dieu tout-puissant, fais que nous trouvions un soutien dans ce repas sacré.
Méditation :
« Maître, nous sommes perdus ; cela ne te fais rien ? » La peur de la mort étreint les disciples et leur cri ressemble plus à un reproche qu’à une prière confiante. On dirait qu’ils croient que Jésus pourrait les laisser périr dans les flots. Ils n’ont pas encore vraiment compris qu’ils ont avec eux dans la barque celui dont parlent les Ecritures : « Si je traverse les ravins de la mort, je ne crains aucun mal, car tu es avec moi. En toi nos pères espéraient et tu les délivrais. Dans ta tendresse, tu ne les as pas abandonnés à la mort, car tu les aimais. » Parfois, il peut nous sembler que le Seigneur est indifférent à notre détresse. Qu’il nous donne alors le courage de continuer de crier vers lui et la confiance en sa promesse : « Je serai avec vous tous les jours jusqu’à la fin du monde ».
