Né en Pannonie (Hongrie), soldat à seize ans, Martin (vers 317-397) n’était encore que catéchumène quand, rempli d’une charité évangélique, il partagea son manteau avec un pauvre à Amiens. Baptisé à vingt-deux ans, il quitte l’armée et va se mettre à l’école de saint Hilaire à Poitiers.

Aujourd’hui Martin, le saint évêque de Tours, est entré dans le repos ; au ciel il a été accueilli par les anges.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as été glorifié par la vie et la mort de l’évêque saint Martin, Renouvelle en nos cœurs les merveilles de ta grâce, si bien que ni la mort, ni la vie ne puissent nous séparer de ton amour. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Sg2, 23-3,9
Dieu a créé l’homme pour l’incorruptibilité, il a fait de lui une image de sa propre identité. C’est par la jalousie du diable que la mort est entrée dans le monde ; ils en font l’expérience, ceux qui prennent parti pour lui. Mais les âmes des justes sont dans la main de Dieu ; aucun tourment n’a de prise sur eux. Aux yeux de l’insensé, ils ont paru mourir ; leur départ est compris comme un malheur, et leur éloignement, comme une fin : mais ils sont dans la paix. Au regard des hommes, ils ont subi un châtiment, mais l’espérance de l’immortalité les comblait. Après de faibles peines, de grands bienfaits les attendent, car Dieu les a mis à l’épreuve et trouvés dignes de lui. Comme l’or au creuset, il les a éprouvés ; comme une offrande parfaite, il les accueille. Au temps de sa visite, ils resplendiront : comme l’étincelle qui court sur la paille, ils avancent. Ils jugeront les nations, ils auront pouvoir sur les peuples,et le Seigneur régnera sur eux pour les siècles. Qui met en lui sa foi comprendra la vérité ; ceux qui sont fidèles resteront, dans l’amour, près de lui. Pour ses amis, grâce et miséricorde : il visitera ses élus.

Le Seigneur regarde les justes, il écoute, attentif à leur cris. Le Seigneur affronte les méchants pour effacer de la terre leur mémoire.
Le Seigneur entend ceux qui l’appellent : de toutes leurs angoisses, il les délivre. Il est proche du cœur brisé, il sauve l’esprit abattu.

En ce temps là, Jésus disait : « Lequel d’entre vous, quand son serviteur aura labouré ou gardé les bêtes, lui dira à son retour des champs : “Viens vite prendre place à table” ? Ne lui dira-t-il pas plutôt “Prépare-moi à dîner, mets-toi en tenue pour me servir, le temps que je mange et boive. Ensuite tu mangeras et boiras à ton tour” ? Va-t-il être reconnaissant envers ce serviteur d’avoir exécuté ses ordres ? De même vous aussi,quand vous aurez exécuté tout ce qui vous a été ordonné,dites : “Nous sommes de simples serviteurs : nous n’avons fait que notre devoir” ».

En ce jour où nous fêtons saint Martin, sanctifie, Seigneur, cette offrande : Qu’elle nous aide toujours à marcher vers toi à travers les épreuves et les joies de cette vie. Par Jésus.

Toi qui nous as nourris, Seigneur, par le sacrement de l’unité, Fais-nous vivre en parfait accord avec toi, pour qu’en imitant saint Martin dans le don total qu’il te fit de lui-même, nous soyons heureux de t’appartenir vraiment. Par Jésus.
Méditation :
Jésus parle de l’humilité et du service. Cette méditation nous rappelle l’importance de l’humilité dans notre service envers Dieu. Les serviteurs dans cette parabole accomplissent leur devoir sans attendre de récompense. Méditons sur notre attitude envers le service et notre relation avec Dieu. Soyons humbles, reconnaissant que tout ce que nous avons et faisons est un don de Dieu. Servons avec gratitude et obéissance, sachant que c’est un honneur de Le servir. En pratiquant cette humilité dans notre service, nous renforçons notre relation avec Dieu et glorifions Son nom. La récompense réside dans le privilège de Lui plaire, plutôt que dans une reconnaissance terrestre.

Saint Martin of Tours, Bishop

He was born in the Roman province of Pannonia. He spent some time as a hermit on an island off the Ligurian coast, founded a monastery at Ligugé in western France. The famous story about St Martin is that while a soldier in Amiens he gave half of his military cloak to a beggar and later had a dream in which the beggar revealed himself as Christ. He died in 397.

I shall raise up for myself a faithful priest who will act in accord with my heart and my mind, says the Lord.
Collect
O God, who are glorified in the Bishop Saint Martin both by his life and death, make new, we pray, the wonders of your grace in our hearts, that neither death nor life may separate us from your love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Wisdom 2:23-3:9
God made man imperishable, he made him in the image of his own nature; it was the devil’s envy that brought death into the world, as those who are his partners will discover. But the souls of the virtuous are in the hands of God, no torment shall ever touch them. In the eyes of the unwise, they did appear to die, their going looked like a disaster, their leaving us, like annihilation; but they are in peace. If they experienced punishment as men see it, their hope was rich with immortality; slight was their affliction, great will their blessings be. God has put them to the test and proved them worthy to be with him; he has tested them like gold in a furnace, and accepted them as a holocaust.

Meditation
The words from our Gospel, “We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty,” serve as a poignant reminder that when we engage in acts of service, we should not necessarily expect any show of gratitude or reward. We should serve out of love for God and others. True service is not about getting something in return. It is about selflessly giving of ourselves to others. Jesus stands as the most outstanding example of service and humility. His earthly mission was characterised by service and sacrificial giving. Without expecting thanks or reward, Jesus demonstrated profound love in his service to humanity. Jesus is a great model for any discourse about humility. Philippians 2: 5-11 beautifully captures his humility. We must follow Jesus’ example of serving others out of pure love without harbouring expectations. Though the servant may not express the wish to be thanked, Jesus assures us today that humble service is inherently rewarding. Let us seek the Lord’s guidance to cultivate humility, enabling us put others before ourselves, and serve them out of love.

Pape en 440, Léon (vers 395-461) est un prédicateur dont les sermons sont d’une grande richesse doctrinale, et un pasteur qui sut, face aux hérésies, formuler le mystère de la personne du Christ, Dieu et homme, en des termes adoptés par le concile de Chalcédoine. Par ses interventions, l’évêque de Rome sauva à deux reprises sa ville de la ruine dont la menaçaient les Huns d’Attila et les Vandales de Genséric.

Le Seigneur a conclu avec saint Léon une alliance de paix. Il en a fait un chef qui possède à jamais la dignité du sacerdoce.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui ne laisses pas les puissances du mal prévaloir contre ton Église fondée sur le roc inébranlable des Apôtres, fais qu’à la prière du pape saint Léon, elle reste ferme dans ta vérité, et, sous ta garde, soit pour toujours en paix. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Sg 1, 1-7
Aimez la justice, vous qui gouvernez la terre, ayez sur le Seigneur des pensées droites, cherchez-le avec un cœur simple, car il se laisse trouver par ceux qui ne le mettent pas à l’épreuve, il se manifeste à ceux qui ne refusent pas de croire en lui. Les pensées tortueuses éloignent de Dieu, et sa puissance confond les insensés qui la provoquent. Car la Sagesse ne peut entrer dans une âme qui veut le mal, ni habiter dans un corps asservi au péché. L’Esprit saint, éducateur des hommes, fuit l’hypocrisie, il se détourne des projets sans intelligence, quand survient l’injustice, il la confond. L’esprit du Seigneur remplit l’univers : lui qui tient ensemble tous les êtres, il entend toutes les voix.

Méditation :
Jésus enseigne sur le pardon et la foi. Cette courte méditation s’inspire de ces versets. Jésus nous rappelle l’importance du pardon dans nos vies. Le pardon libère nos cœurs du fardeau de la rancune et de la colère. Il nous invite également à avoir une foi profonde. Même une petite foi peut accomplir de grandes choses, comme un grain de moutarde qui devient un arbre. Méditons sur notre capacité à pardonner et à avoir confiance en Dieu. Le pardon nous rapproche de la paix intérieure, et la foi nous ouvre la porte à la grâce divine. Avec ces deux qualités, nous pouvons surmonter les obstacles de la vie et grandir spirituellement.

Pope Saint Leo the Great (- 461)

He was born in Etruria and became Pope in 440. He was a true shepherd and father of souls. He constantly strove to keep the faith whole and strenuously defended the unity of the Church. He left many doctrinal and spiritual writings behind and a number of them are included in the Office of Readings to this day. He died in 461.

The Lord established for him a covenant of peace, and made him the prince, that he might have the dignity of the priesthood for ever.

O God, who never allow the gates of hell to prevail against your Church, firmly founded on the apostolic rock, grant her, we pray, that through the intercession of Pope Saint Leo, she may stand firm in your truth and know the protection of lasting peace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Wisdom 1:1-7
Love virtue, you who are judges on earth, let honesty prompt your thinking about the Lord, seek him in simplicity of heart; since he is to be found by those who do not put him to the test, he shows himself to those who do not distrust him. But selfish intentions divorce from God; and Omnipotence, put to the test, confounds the foolish. No, Wisdom will never make its way into a crafty soul nor stay in a body that is in debt to sin; the holy spirit of instruction shuns deceit, it stands aloof from reckless purposes, is taken aback when iniquity appears. Meditation
Forgiving, especially when we have been hurt, is not always easy. In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us a crucial lesson on forgiveness. When we experience pain, it is natural to feel anger, resentment, or betrayal. However, Jesus teaches us the necessity of forgiving others, even in the face of repeated wrongs. He is not telling us to condone the other person’s action; rather, He calls us to release our anger and resentment and move on. Forgiveness is a path to healing and liberation from the weight of past grievances. It grants us the freedom to let go of the burden of anger and resentment. In our prayers, let us ask God to increase our faith so that we can choose to forgive others, even in situations where it seems difficult or nearly impossible. May God empower us to embrace the transformative power of forgiveness.

Mais que chacun prenne garde à la façon dont il contribue à la construction. La pierre de fondation, personne ne peut en poser d’autre que celle qui s’y trouve : Jésus Christ.Ne savez-vous pas que vous êtes un sanctuaire de Dieu, et que l’Esprit de Dieu habite en vous ? Si quelqu’un détruit le sanctuaire de Dieu, cet homme, Dieu le détruira, car le sanctuaire de Dieu est saint, et ce sanctuaire, c’est vous.

Évangile : Jn 2, 13-22
Comme la Pâque juive était proche, Jésus monta à Jérusalem. Dans le Temple, il trouva installés les marchands de bœufs, de brebis et de colombes, et les changeurs. Il fit un fouet avec des cordes, et les chassa tous du Temple, ainsi que les brebis et les bœufs ; il jeta par terre la monnaie des changeurs, renversa leurs comptoirs, et dit aux marchands de colombes : « Enlevez cela d’ici. Cessez de faire de la maison de mon Père une maison de commerce. » Ses disciples se rappelèrent qu’il est écrit : L’amour de ta maison fera mon tourment. Des Juifs l’interpellèrent: « Quel signe peux-tu nous donner pour agir ainsi?» Jésus leur répondit: « Détruisez ce sanctuaire, et en trois jours je le relèverai. » Les Juifs lui répliquèrent: « Il a fallu quarante-six ans pour bâtir ce sanctuaire, et toi, en trois jours tu le relèverais ! » Mais lui parlait du sanctuaire de son corps. Aussi, quand il se réveilla d’entre les morts, ses disciples se rappelèrent qu’il avait dit cela ; ils crurent à l’Écriture et à la parole que Jésus avait dite.

Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que ton Eglise de la terre soit pour nous l’annonce de la Jérusalem céleste ; accorde-nous, par cette communion, d’être ici-bas le temple de ta grâce et d’entrer un jour dans la demeure de ta gloire. Par Jésus.
Méditation :
Nous lisons le récit de Jésus chassant les marchands du temple. Cette scène nous rappelle la sainteté du lieu de culte et la révérence due à Dieu. Méditons sur l’importance de purifier nos cœurs et nos vies pour devenir des temples spirituels dignes de la présence de Dieu. Comme Jésus a purifié le temple, cherchons à purifier notre propre être des impuretés de l’égoïsme, du péché et de l’indifférence envers Dieu et nos semblables. Que cette méditation nous inspire à cultiver une relation profonde avec Dieu, à honorer Sa sainteté, et à vivre une vie de foi authentique. En devenant des temples spirituels purs, nous accueillons la présence de Dieu dans nos vies de manière plus profonde et significative.

First reading : Ezekiel 47:1-2,8-9,12
The angel brought me to the entrance of the Temple, where a stream came out from under the Temple threshold and flowed eastwards, since the Temple faced east. He took me out by the north gate and led me right round outside as far as the outer east gate where the water flowed out on the right-hand side. He said, ‘This water flows east down to the Arabah and to the sea; and flowing into the sea it makes its waters wholesome. Wherever the river flows, all living creatures teeming in it will live. Gospel : John 2:13-22
Just before the Jewish Passover Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and in the Temple he found people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, and the money changers sitting at their counters there. Making a whip out of some cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well, scattered the money changers’ coins, knocked their tables over and said to the pigeon-sellers, ‘Take all this out of here and stop turning my Father’s house into a market.’ Then his disciples remembered the words of scripture: Zeal for your house will devour me. The Jews intervened and said, ‘What sign can you show us to justify what you have done?’ Jesus answered, ‘Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews replied, ‘It has taken forty-six years to build this sanctuary: are you going to raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the words he had said.

O God, who chose to foreshadow for us the heavenly Jerusalem through the sign of your Church on earth, grant, we pray, that, by our partaking of this Sacrament, we may be made the temple of your grace and may enter the dwelling place of your glory. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Jesus is angry, and his actions are both shocking and provocative. He underscores the sanctity of the Temple, emphasising the purpose for which it was built, a sacred place of prayer and worship. However, the presence of merchants and moneychangers has transformed it into a marketplace, exploiting those who come to the Temple to worship. Beyond its physical structure, the Temple also symbolises God’s presence among us. We must always treat God’s house with perpetual respect and reverence. The Lateran Basilica. being the oldest and most important Church in Rome, serves as a symbol of the unity of the Catholic Church. Commemorating its dedication today serves as a reminder to us of the dual significance of the Temple or Church — as a physical structure and as a representation of our bodies as the Temple of the Holy Spirit. This calls us to treat God’s house with respect while appreciating the gift of the Church and recognising our bodies as sacred vessels.

Son monastère battait de l’aile avec seulement six moines quand ceux-ci le choisirent comme abbé. En quelque temps, le monastère de Nogent ans la Marne devint l’un des plus florissants. Après l’insistance de l’évêque de Reims, il accepte de devenir évêque d’Amiens. Ce qui lui en coûta en quelque sorte. Car la plupart des membres du clergé était à la solde des grands seigneurs.

Méditation :
Le Christ nous encourage à réfléchir à la manière dont nous utilisons nos ressources matérielles. Le gérant malhonnête a été astucieux dans la gestion de ses biens terrestres, mais Jésus souligne que les enfants de lumière, c’est-à-dire les croyants, devraient être tout aussi sages dans l’utilisation de leurs ressources pour des fins éternelles. Méditons sur notre propre gestion des biens matériels. Cherchons à les utiliser avec sagesse et générosité, en investissant dans des choses qui ont une valeur éternelle, comme l’amour, la justice, et la compassion envers les autres. En faisant ainsi, nous découvrons une leçon spirituelle précieuse dans cette parabole apparemment énigmatique.

He was born in Oxford and ordained priest in 1596. He worked secretly as a priest in 1603 in Oxfordshire. He was arrested in 1610: the possession of the holy oils and a breviary was considered sufficient evidence of priesthood and he was condemned to death. He was hanged, drawn and quartered at Oxford on 8 November 1610 and beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1929.

Meditation
Jesus teaches us a valuable lesson on the use of our resources to build relationships with others. While material possessions themselves are not inherently bad, they can become dangerous if we allow them to control us, and infringe on our freedom. True wealth lies in our relationships with others. Investing our resources in building these connections is an investment in our eternal future. Authentic wealth, therefore, is found in our relationship with God. By choosing to serve God, we open ourselves to provide for the needs of the needy in our midst. Let us ask the Lord to help us to choose true wealth over dishonest wealth and to use our resources to nurture relationships with others while enhancing our service to God. May God be the only true master in our life!

He was the first of the great Anglo-Saxon missionaries to Europe and is remembered not just for his devotion in preaching the Gospel but also for his joyfulness of character and his holiness of life. He died at Echternach in Luxembourg in 739.

My brothers, I am quite certain that you are full of good intentions, perfectly well instructed and able to advise each other. He has appointed me as a priest of Jesus Christ, and I am to carry out my priestly duty by bringing the Good News from God to the pagans, and so make them acceptable as an offering, made holy by the Holy Spirit. I think I have some reason to be proud of what I, in union with Christ Jesus, have been able to do for God. What I am presuming to speak of, of course, is only what Christ himself has done to win the allegiance of the pagans, using what I have said and done by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thus all the way along, from Jerusalem to Illyricum, I have preached Christ’s Good News to the utmost of my capacity. I have always, however, made it an unbroken rule never to preach where Christ’s name has already been heard. The reason for that was that I had no wish to build on other men’s foundations; on the contrary, my chief concern has been to fulfil the text: Those who have never been told about him will see him, and those who have never heard about him will understand.

Meditation
Frequently, there is a misconception surrounding the parable of the dishonest steward, as some may mistakenly view it as Jesus’ endorsement of dishonesty. However, Jesus is not praising the steward for his dishonesty. Instead, he highlights the steward’s shrewdness in using his resources to secure his future. Essentialy, Jesus is not endorsing unethical actions but rather emphasising the steward’s cleverness in planning for what lies ahead. Jesus does not recommend dishonesty but urges us to exhibit the same level of diligence for goodness as the steward displayed for dishonesty. Furthermore, a crucial lesson from the parable is the call to be prudent in managing our material and spiritual resources. It urges us to exercise wisdom in handling our finances, time, and talents. We should also be careful about the relationships we form and the choices we make. Let us ask God to help us be good stewards so we can use our resources wisely and generously to benefit ourselves and others.

Willibord (658-739), moine bénédictin de Ripon en Angleterre, puis de Rathmelsing en Irlande, fut envoyé en Frise (690) pour y porter l’évangile. Après avoir été sacré évêque par le pape Sergius 1er, il établit son siège à Utrecht et fonda plusieurs monastères, notamment celui d’Echternach où il mourut.

Moi-même, je suis convaincu, mes frères, que vous êtes pleins de bonnes qualités, remplis de toute connaissance de Dieu, et capables aussi de vous reprendre les uns les autres. Mais je vous ai écrit avec un peu d’audace, comme pour raviver votre mémoire sur certains points, et c’est en raison de la grâce que Dieu m’a donnée. Cette grâce, c’est d’être ministre du Christ Jésus pour les nations, avec la fonction sacrée d’annoncer l’Évangile : de Dieu, afin que l’offrande des nations soit acceptée par Dieu, sanctifiée dans l’Esprit Saint. Je mets donc ma fierté dans le Christ Jésus, pour ce qui est du service de Dieu. Car je n’oserais rien dire s’il ne s’agissait de ce que le Christ a mis en œuvre par moi afin d’amener les nations à l’obéissance de la foi, par la parole et l’action, la puissance des signes et des prodiges, la puissance de l’Esprit de Dieu. Ainsi, depuis Jérusalem en rayonnant jusqu’à la Dalmatie, j’ai mené à bien l’annonce de l’Évangile: du Christ. Je l’ai fait en mettant mon honneur à n’évangéliser que là où le nom du Christ n’avait pas encore été prononcé, car je ne voulais pas bâtir sur les fondations posées par un autre, mais j’ai agi selon qu’il est écrit: Ceux à qui on ne l’avait pas annoncé verront ; ceux qui n’en avaient pas entendu parler comprendront.

Il demanda au premier: “ Combien dois-tu à mon maître ? ” Il répondit : “ Cent barils d’huile. “ Le gérant lui dit : “Voici ton reçu; vite, assieds-toi et écris cinquante.
