THOMAS D’AQUIN, PRETRE ET DOCTEUR DE L’EGLISE
(Psautier III –Blanc // Vert)
Né dans une noble famille napolitaine et élevé à l’abbaye bénédictine du Mont-Cassin, Thomas choisit à 19 ans d’entrer chez les Frères Prêcheurs. Il est l’auteur de la Somme Théologique, ouvrage dans lequel il met en œuvre la leçon de Saint Albert le Grand selon laquelle il faut faire confiance à la raison et à l’intelligence de l’homme pour chercher Dieu. Il meurt sur la route, en chemin vers Lyon où il devait participer au grand Concile de 1274.

Dieu qui as fait de saint Thomas d’Aquin un modèle admirable par sa recherche d’une vie sainte et son amour de la science sacrée, accorde-nous de comprendre ses enseignements et de suivre ses exemples. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : 2 S 7, 4-17
Cette nuit-là, la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Nathan: «Va dire à mon serviteur David: Ainsi parle le Seigneur: Est-ce toi qui me bâtiras une maison pour que j’y habite? Depuis le jour où j’ai fait monter d’Égypte les fils d’Israël et jusqu’à ce jour, je n’ai jamais habité dans une maison ; j’ai été comme un voyageur, sous la tente qui était ma demeure. Pendant tout le temps où j’étais comme un voyageur parmi tous les fils d’Israël, ai-je demandé à un seul des juges que j’avais institués pasteurs de mon peuple Israël: “Pourquoi ne m’avez-vous pas bâti une maison de cèdre?” Tu diras donc à mon serviteur David: Ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers: C’est moi qui t’ai pris au pâturage, derrière le troupeau, pour que tu sois le chef de mon peuple Israël. J’ai été avec toi partout où tu es allé, j’ai abattu devant toi tous tes ennemis. Je t’ai fait un nom aussi grand que celui des plus grands de la terre. Je fixerai en ce lieu mon peuple Israël, je l’y planterai, il s’y établira et ne tremblera plus, et les méchants ne viendront plus l’humilier, comme ils l’ont fait autrefois, depuis le jour où j’ai institué des juges pour conduire mon peuple Israël. Oui, je t’ai accordé la tranquillité en te délivrant de tous tes ennemis. Le Seigneur t’annonce qu’il te fera lui-même une maison. Quand tes jours seront accomplis et que tu reposeras auprès de tes pères, je te susciterai dans ta descendance un successeur, qui naîtra de toi, et je rendrai stable sa royauté. C’est lui qui bâtira une maison pour mon nom, et je rendrai stable pour toujours son trône royal. Moi, je serai pour lui un père; et lui sera pour moi un fils. S’il fait le mal, je le corrigerai avec le bâton, à la manière humaine, je le frapperai comme font les hommes. Mais ma fidélité ne lui sera pas retirée, comme je l’ai retirée à Saül que j’ai écarté de devant toi. Ta maison et ta royauté subsisteront toujours devant moi, ton trône sera stable pour toujours.» Toutes ces paroles, toute cette vision, Nathan les rapporta fidèlement à David.

En ce temps-là, Jésus se mit de nouveau à enseigner au bord de la mer de Galilée. Une foule très nombreuse se rassembla auprès de lui, si bien qu’il monta dans une barque où il s’assit. Il était sur la mer, et toute la foule était près de la mer, sur le rivage. Il leur enseignait beaucoup de choses en paraboles, et dans son enseignement il leur disait: «Écoutez! Voici que le semeur sortit pour semer. Comme il semait, du grain est tombé au bord du chemin ; les oiseaux sont venus et ils ont tout mangé. Du grain est tombé aussi sur du sol pierreux, où il n’avait pas beaucoup de terre ; il a levé aussitôt, parce que la terre était peu profonde; et lorsque le soleil s’est levé, ce grain a brûlé et, faute de racines, il a séché. Du grain est tombé aussi dans les ronces, les ronces ont poussé, l’ont étouffé, et il n’a pas donné de fruit. Mais d’autres grains sont tombés dans la bonne terre; ils ont donné du fruit en poussant et en se développant, et ils ont produit trente, soixante, cent, pour un.» Et Jésus disait: «Celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, qu’il entende!» Quand il resta seul, ceux qui étaient autour de lui avec les Douze l’interrogeaient sur les paraboles. Il leur disait: «C’est à vous qu’est donné le mystère du royaume de Dieu; mais à ceux qui sont dehors, tout se présente sous forme de paraboles. Et ainsi, comme dit le prophète: Ils auront beau regarder de tous leurs yeux, ils ne verront pas; ils auront beau écouter de toutes leurs oreilles, ils ne comprendront pas ; sinon ils se convertiraient et recevraient le pardon.» Il leur dit encore: «Vous ne saisissez pas cette parabole? Alors, comment comprendrez-vous toutes les paraboles? Le semeur sème la Parole. Il y a ceux qui sont au bord du chemin où la Parole est semée: quand ils l’entendent, Satan vient aussitôt et enlève la Parole semée en eux. Et de même, il y a ceux qui ont reçu la semence dans les endroits pierreux: ceux-là, quand ils entendent la Parole, ils la reçoivent aussitôt avec joie; mais ils n’ont pas en eux de racine, ce sont les gens d’un moment; que vienne la détresse ou la persécution à cause de la Parole, ils trébuchent aussitôt. Et il y en a d’autres qui ont reçu la semence dans les ronces: ceux-ci entendent la Parole, mais les soucis du monde, la séduction de la richesse et toutes les autres convoitises les envahissent et étouffent la Parole, qui ne donne pas de fruit. Et il y a ceux qui ont reçu la semence dans la bonne terre: ceux-là entendent la Parole, ils l’accueillent, et ils portent du fruit : trente, soixante, cent, pour un.»

Regarde, Seigneur, les offrandes que nous te présentons en la fête de saint Thomas d’Aquin ; que la confession de ta vérité conduise au salut ceux qui gardent la même foi que lui. Par Jésus.

Nous t’en prions, Dieu tout-puissant : puisque nous confessons, avec saint Thomas d’Aquin, que Jésus est vraiment Dieu, fais que la divinité de ton Fils unique nous apporte, dans cette communion, la vie et la force pour toujours. Lui qui.
Méditation :
« Ecoutez. » Si le grain de la Parole est semé à tout vent, le terrain doit être prêt à l’accueillir, dans l’hospitalité de chaque instant. Terre de notre cœur, terre de désir, « terre aride, altérée, sans eau » (Ps 62), terre à creuser, à labourer, à défricher par le long travail de l’écoute. C’est le travail du Peuple d’Israël, celui des disciples, celui qui mène au silence de la croix où l’amour prend racine. La terre devient silencieuse, le grain tombé en terre meurt à soi-même et s’ouvre à la vie de l’Esprit. « Charité, joie, paix, longanimité, serviabilité, bonté, confiance dans les autres, douceur, maîtrise de soi, tels sont les fruits de l’Esprit » (Ga 5, 22). Telle est la fécondité de nos vies pour le Royaume.

He was born of a noble family in southern Italy, and was educated by the Benedictines. In the normal course of events he would have joined that order and taken up a position suitable to his rank; but he decided to become a Dominican instead. His family were so scandalised by this disreputable plan that they kidnapped him and kept him prisoner for over a year; but he was more obstinate than they were, and he had his way at last.

Meditation
“The sower sows the Word.” The Word of God has been announced to us by various people God has placed in our paths: our parents, our priests, our catechists, our teachers, our friends, and even strangers. We have easy access to the Holy Scriptures these days. But how do we receive the Word of God? Do we waive it away as an unnecessary distraction? Do we follow it only when it is convenient for us and abandon it when it challenges us? Do we bend it when we are pursuing wealth, power and honour? Or do we allow it to transform our lives so that we become true witnesses of Jesus in the world? Let us allow the Word of God to take root in our lives and bear fruits of holiness and virtue. King David was an example of a true servant of God, who allowed God’s Word to guide his actions. His reward was the kingship of Israel and the assurance of God’s constant protection and blessing. Let us become servants of God like him, who listen to God’s Word and obey it, and God’s blessings will accompany us all the days of our lives.

Biographie de la Sainte :
Angèle Merici (vers 1470-1540), âgée de 65 ans environ, fonda à Brescia l’Institut des Ursulines. Pour assurer la totale disponibilité des religieuses, elle ne voulait pas de clôture, elle souhaitait peu de vie commune et une adaptation périodique de la règle. Sa pédagogie peut être résumée en cette consigne qu’elle donnait aux éducatrices : « attirer les jeunes filles avec amour ».

1ère lecture : 2 S 6, 12b-15. 17-19
En ces jours-là, David fit monter l’arche de Dieu de la maison d’Obed-Édom jusqu’à la Cité de David, au milieu des cris de joie. Quand les porteurs de l’Arche eurent avancé de six pas, il offrit en sacrifice un taureau et un veau gras. David, vêtu d’un pagne de lin, dansait devant le Seigneur, en tournoyant de toutes ses forces. David et tout le peuple d’Israël firent monter l’arche du Seigneur parmi les ovations, au son du cor. Ils amenèrent donc l’arche du Seigneur et l’installèrent à sa place, au milieu de la tente que David avait dressée pour elle. Puis il offrit devant le Seigneur des holocaustes et des sacrifices de paix. Quand David eut achevé d’offrir les holocaustes et les sacrifices de paix, il bénit le peuple au nom du Seigneur des armées. Il fit une distribution à tout le peuple, à la foule entière des Israélites, hommes et femmes : pour chacun une galette de pain, un morceau de rôti et un gâteau de raisins. Ensuite tout le monde s’en retourna chacun chez soi.

Celui qui fait la volonté de Dieu, celui-là est pour moi un frère, une sœur, une mère.»

Méditation :
« Il est hors de sens » : tel est le reproche que les proches de Jésus lui adressent. Veulent-ils le retenir dans les liens familiaux ? « Ceux qui font la volonté de Dieu, ceux-là sont ma mère, mes frères », répond Jésus. « Nous sommes fous à cause du Christ, mais vous, vous êtes sages en Christ », écrira saint Paul dans sa première lettres aux Corinthiens. Entrer dans la volonté de Dieu, se mettre à la suite du Christ, c’est accepter de se laisser bousculer, désorienter humainement, pour accueillir le don de Dieu et entrer dans la famille que le Christ, par son obéissance, a réconciliée avec Dieu. Les liens familiaux deviennent alors liens de liberté dans l’obéissance à Notre Père qui aime et fait grandir, et qui nous unit dans le véritable amour.

She was born in Desenziano, in Lombardy, in about 1470. She became a Franciscan tertiary and set up a school to instruct girls in Christanity and good works. In 1535 she founded the Ursulines, an order of nuns devoted to giving a Christian education to girls from poor families. She died in 1540.

First reading: 2 Samuel 6:12b-15, 17-19
David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the City of David amid festivities. As soon as the bearers of the ark of the Lord had advanced six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. Then David, girt with a linen apron, came dancing before the Lord with abandon, as he and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts of joy and to the sound of the horn. The ark of the Lord was brought in and set in its place within the tent David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. Meditation
“Whoever does the will of God is my mother, brother and sister.” We all know people who reject their biological parents because they received no love or care from them. On the other hand, we have friends whom we refer to as brothers or sisters because the affection they show to us. Clearly, love can build bonds which are even stronger than family ties. This is also true of our relationship with God; God has only one begotten Son, but we become his sons and daughters if we love him and do his will. David loved God so much that he offered him sacrifices and danced to glorify his name. Mary loved God so much that she surrendered herself to his will by accepting to be the mother of his Son Jesus. She treasured the Word of God her heart and meditated on it; she followed Jesus right to the foot of the cross, and she joined the first Christian community in constant prayer. Let David and Mary be our models; supported by their prayers, may we learn to love and God and obey his will like tem, and we shall be true children of God.

Timothy and Titus were converted to Christianity by St Paul, and became his companions and helpers. Paul entrusted Timothy with the care of the Christians in Ephesus, and sent Titus to Crete to look after the Christians there. He wrote them the so-called “pastoral” epistles, giving advice for pastors and people alike.

Meditation
“I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother and in your mother.” Paul speaks of the origins of Timothy’s faith; he received it from his mother Lois, who in turn received it from her own mother Eunice. In his family therefore, the Christian faith was transmitted from generation to generation. St. John Paul II called the family the domestic Church, and with good reason; it is in the family that the Christian should first be discovered and lived. Parents have a responsibility to initiate their children into the mystery of the faith. They have to teach them to know and love God, to pray, and to practice Christian virtues. In the Gospel, Jesus reprimands the Jews for refusing to believe in his divine power and accusing him of working for the devil; in so doing, they sin against the Holy Spirit. We all have to learn to believe in Jesus, acknowledge his power over all existence, and allow him to transform our lives. This learning process has to begin and be sustained in the family. If you are a parent, then you have the duty to transmit the faith to your spouse and your children.

Des scribes dénoncent Jésus : « Il a en Lui Béelzéboul, c’est par le chef des démons qu’il expulse les démons. » Accusation absurde qui se brise sur la simplicité limpide de Jésus : un royaume divisé contre lui-même ne peut pas tenir ! Accusation perverse qui attribue le bien à l’esprit du mal. Monstrueux blasphème qui confond « l’Esprit Saint » et « l’esprit impur ». C’est la marque de l’adversaire : lucidité et mensonge. Jésus, rempli d’Esprit Saint, est « le pur ». Il dit et fait le bien. Il est « l’homme fort » qui a lié Satan et délié les hommes.

Meditation
“The Lord is my light and my help.” Isaiah announced that the people of Zebulun and Naphtali had seen a great light that would dispel their darkness. Matthew writes in the Gospel that this prophecy was fulfilled by Jesus, who went to these territories to begin his ministry. Jesus is the light sent by God to dispel the darkness of sin in our lives and in our world. Light enables us to see our way, so that we do not stumble and fall; Jesus enlightens us with his Word, which shows us the right way to live so that we can avoid the dangers and stumbling blocks of life and find true happiness. His Word is first and foremost a message of repentance; we must change our ways by abandoning all that is contrary to his will. His Word is also an invitation to discipleship; we must follow him and allow his precepts guide our actions. And one of these precepts is unity; we must avoid everything that causes rivalry and division in our families, communities and gatherings, and always strive to bring people together to work for the common good.

J’ai entendu parler de vous, mes frères, par les gens de chez Cloé: on dit qu’il y a des disputes entre vous. Je m’explique. Chacun de vous prend parti en disant: «Moi, j’appartiens à Paul», ou bien: «J’appartiens à Apollos», ou bien: «J’appartiens à Pierre», ou bien: «J’appartiens au Christ». Le Christ est-il donc divisé? Est-ce donc Paul qui a été crucifié pour vous? Est-ce au nom de Paul que vous avez été baptisés? D’ailleurs, le Christ ne m’a pas envoyé pour baptiser, mais pour annoncer l’Évangile, et sans avoir recours à la sagesse du langage humain, ce qui viderait de son sens la croix du Christ.

Méditation :
Aujourd’hui, jour de la conversion de l’Apôtre Paul, nous nous souvenons de cet événement de son histoire, une rencontre bouleversante qui a changé la vie de cet homme, Saul de Tarse. Chaque rencontre avec le Seigneur bouleverse la vie, à l’exemple de celle des quatre pêcheurs Simon, André, Jacques. Jésus appelle chacun par son nom et l’invite à le suivre. L’appel ouvre l’espace de la rencontre. La mission que Jésus confie à ses disciples se nourrit de la force intime de ce lien. Pêcheur de poissons, « pêcheur d’hommes ». La différence est grande ! Hors de l’eau, un poisson est voué à la mort. A l’inverse, l’homme qui, arraché au gouffre des eaux, se prend aux filets de la miséricorde, échappe à la mort du péché. Il renaît à une vie nouvelle. L’Eucharistie est le lieu de cette rencontre bouleversante que le Seigneur nous propose aujourd’hui.

SAINT FRANCIS DE SALES, BISHOP AND DOCTOR

He was born near Annecy, in Savoy, studied the law, and was ordained to the priesthood despite the opposition of his father. His first mission was to re-evangelize the people of his home district (the Chablais), who had gone over to Calvinism. Always in danger of his life from hostile Calvinists, he preached with such effectiveness that after four years most of the people had returned to the Church. He was then appointed bishop of Geneva, and spent the rest of his life reforming and reorganising the diocese, and in caring for the souls of his people by preaching and spiritual guidance.

Meditation
“He is out of his mind.” Indeed, Christianity can seem like madness. From a human perspective, it usually makes little sense, because it requires us to do things that men would normally not do. Does one mourn when one’s enemy dies? Yet that is what David did; he wept for Saul who had tried to kill him several times. The Christian shows mercy when the world expects him to seek vengeance; he shows love when he is expected to hate; he thinks about others when his natural instinct is to protect his interests; he gives when normally he should take. Yes, the Christian acts in a way which seems like madness in the eyes of the world. To be a Christian is to swim against the current; it means choosing to follow the way of love rather than the way of the world. May the Lord fill us with the madness of Christian love, and the courage to stick to the Christian ideal even when it goes against the expectations of society.

SAINT FRANCOIS DE SALES, EVEQUE ET DOCTEUR DE L’EGLISE

Issu d’une famille savoyarde noble, il choisit le chemin de la foi catholique en consacrant sa vie à Dieu et renonce à tous ses titres de noblesse. Il devint l’un des théologiens les plus considérés de son temps. Ce grand prédicateur accéda au siège d’évêque de Genève et fonda, avec la baronne Jeanne de Chantal, l’ordre religieux de la Visitation.

Or, le troisième jour, un homme arriva du camp de Saül, les vêtements déchirés et la tête couverte de poussière. En arrivant auprès de David, il se jeta à terre et se prosterna. David lui demanda: « D’où viens-tu donc ? » Il lui répondit : « Je me suis échappé du camp d’Israël. » David lui dit: « Que s’est-il passé ? Raconte-le-moi ! » L’homme répondit : « Le peuple s’est enfui du champ de bataille ; beaucoup d’entre eux sont tombés et sont morts. Et même Saül et son fils Jonathan sont morts ! » Alors David arracha et déchira ses vêtements, et tous les hommes qui étaient avec lui firent de même. Ils se lamentèrent, pleurèrent et jeûnèrent jusqu’au soir, à cause de Saül et de son fils Jonathan, à cause du peuple du Seigneur et de la maison d’Israël, parce qu’ils étaient tombés par l’épée. Alors David chanta cette lamentation : « Ta fierté, Israël, transpercée sur tes hauteurs ! Comment sont-ils tombés, les héros? Saül et Jonathan, aimables, pleins de charme, ni dans la vie ni dans la mort ne furent séparés, plus rapides que les aigles, plus vaillants que les lions. Filles d’Israël, pleurez sur Saül : il vous revêtait de pourpre somptueuse et rehaussait de joyaux d’or vos vêtements. Comment sont-ils tombés, les héros, au milieu du combat ? Jonathan, transpercé sur les hauteurs ! J’ai le cœur serré à cause de toi, mon frère Jonathan. Tu étais plein d’affection pour moi, et ton amitié pour moi était merveille plus grande que l’amour des femmes ! Comment sont-ils tombés, les héros ? Comment ont-elles disparu, les armes du combat ? »

- Berger d’Israël, écoute, toi qui conduis Joseph, ton troupeau: resplendis au-dessus des Kéroubim, devant Éphraïm, Benjamin, Manassé ! Réveille ta vaillance et viens nous sauver.
- Seigneur, Dieu de l’univers, vas-tu longtemps encore opposer ta colère aux prières de ton peuple, le nourrir du pain de ses larmes, l’abreuver de larmes sans mesure ? Tu fais de nous la cible des voisins : nos ennemis ont vraiment de quoi rire !
Acclamation :
Alléluia, alléluia! Seigneur, ouvre notre cœur pour nous rendre attentifs aux paroles de ton Fils. Alléluia. (2 Tm 1, 10)
Évangile : Mc 3, 20-21
En ce temps-là, Jésus revint à la maison, où de nouveau la foule se rassembla, si bien qu’il n’était même pas possible de manger. Les gens de chez lui, l’apprenant, vinrent pour se saisir de lui, car ils affirmaient : « Il a perdu la tête. »
Prière sur les offrandes :
Grâce au sacrifice que nous t’offrons, Seigneur, allume en nous le feu de l’Esprit qui brûlait d’amour le cœur de saint François. Par Jésus.
Antienne de communion : Jn 13, 35
« Ce qui montrera à tous les hommes que vous êtes mes disciples, dit le Seigneur, c’est l’amour que vous aurez les uns pour les autres. »
Prière après la communion :
Accorde-nous par cette communion, Dieu tout-puissant, d’imiter la douceur et la charité de saint François, pour obtenir avec lui la gloire du ciel. Par Jésus.
Méditation :
Jésus très sollicité par la foule, est tenu pour rien par les siens. Ceux qui croyaient le connaître, pour l’avoir côtoyé au quotidien, sont les étrangers à son message. « Il est venu chez les siens, et les siens ne l’ont pas connu » dit l’Evangile de Jean. Drame de famille ? Pas seulement ; tout le drame de l’humanité se dit en ces deux lignes. Et le nôtre aussi du même coup ! Toujours en retard quand il faut reconnaître le bien à faire, et même le bien qui nous est fait ; quand il faut percer la carapace de nos clichés et de nos idées préconçues pour voir, enfin, dans notre prochain, dans les événements, une dimension, une profondeur, qui nous avait toujours échappée. Il nous faut demander « des yeux pour voir, des oreilles pour entendre », sans quoi… nous perdrons la tête !
