Meditation
It is essential to distinguish between those we hate and those who hate us. Jesus specifically addresses those who harbour animosity against us. He stresses that we are not free if we hate people, for this is not being perfect as our heavenly Father is. Jesus says that if we, in return, harbour hatred against our brother or sister, then we are no different. In dealing with those who hate us, Jesus advocates for forgiveness, particularly towards those who have no apparent reason to receive our kindness or affection. Whether they act knowingly or in ignorance, extending forgiveness becomes a crucial step towards healing. God’s love for our enemies is not hinged on our feeling of love or hatred towards them.

Fille naturelle d’un grand seigneur, elle fut élevée par les religieuses dominicaines de Poissy. Restée veuve à 34 ans, elle rencontre saint Vincent de Paul. Subjuguée par la charité contagieuse du prêtre, elle devient rapidement sa collaboratrice dans toutes ses actions charitables. En 1633, ils fondent ensemble la « Compagnie des Filles de la Charité », communément appelée Sœurs de Saint Vincent de Paul.

Méditation
Dans l’évangile d’hier, Jésus exhortait ses disciples à dépasser la sainteté des scribes et des pharisiens. Aujourd’hui, Jésus nous appelle à aller plus loin : à aimer nos ennemis, à bénir nos persécuteurs et à prier pour eux. En un mot, à sans cesse mourir à ce qui n’est que nous-mêmes, à notre propre intérêt. Il nous invite à être entièrement donnés, à être pauvres en esprit, à avoir une sincère contrition de tous nos péchés passés. Si faibles et imparfaits que nous soyons, nous sommes invités à grandir dans l’Esprit. Si seulement nous pouvions accepter la mission qu’a l’Esprit de nous purifier et de nous transformer, nous, l’Église et tous les hommes ! C’est ainsi que par la sainteté de notre vie nous deviendrons témoins du Dieu vivant au milieu de nous, prophètes du Royaume. Remplis de la vie de Dieu, baignés de sa lumière et consumés par son amour, nous serons prêts à conduire nos frères et sœurs.

She was the wife of King Henry I of Germany. Saint Matilda interceded with the king on behalf of criminals, nursed the sick, taught the unschooled, and was generous in almsgiving.

Am I likely to take pleasure in the death of a wicked man – it is the Lord who speaks – and not prefer to see him renounce his wickedness and live? ‘But if the upright man renounces his integrity, commits sin, copies the wicked man and practises every kind of filth, is he to live? All the integrity he has practised shall be forgotten from then on; but this is because he himself has broken faith and committed sin, and for this he shall die. Meditation
In moments of disagreements and tension among brothers and sisters, the connection between us and God is equally strained. Fraternal love becomes an indispensable condition, making it impossible to discuss prayer, piety, or love without first achieving reconciliation among brethren. Regardless of the type of worship, it remains hollow if peace does not reign. While anger is a human emotion, Lent provides an opportunity to manage it effectively, preventing it from leading to regrettable actions. Jesus stresses the importance of starting our Lenten journey with God by first reconciling with our brothers and sisters before presenting our gifts and ourselves in worship.

Mariée par obéissance, Françoise (1384-1440) fut durant près de quarante ans une épouse et une mère de famille modèle. Les visions dont elle fut favorisée ne l’empêchèrent pas de connaître l’épreuve : deux de ses trois enfants moururent et, avec son mari, elle dut subir les revers politiques de l’époque. Elle fonda en 1433 une association d’oblates, qui vivent encore aujourd’hui selon l’esprit de saint Benoît. Devenue veuve, elle fut choisie comme supérieure de leur communauté, et y passa le reste de sa vie dans une union de plus en plus profonde avec Dieu.

Dégage-moi de mes tourments, Seigneur. Vois ma misère et ma peine, enlève tous mes péchés.

1ère lecture : Ezéchiel 18, 21-28
Ainsi parle le Seigneur Dieu : Si le méchant se détourne de tous les péchés qu’il a commis, s’il observe tous mes décrets, s’il pratique le droit et la justice, c’est certain, il vivra, il ne mourra pas. On ne se souviendra d’aucun des crimes qu’il a commis, il vivra à cause de la justice qu’il a pratiquée. Prendrais-je donc plaisir à la mort du méchant – oracle du Seigneur Dieu –, et non pas plutôt à ce qu’il se détourne de sa conduite et qu’il vive ? Mais le juste, s’il se détourne de sa justice et fait le mal en imitant toutes les abominations du méchant, il le ferait et il vivrait ? Toute la justice qu’il avait pratiquée, on ne s’en souviendra plus : à cause de son infidélité et de son péché, il mourra ! Et pourtant vous dites : « La conduite du Seigneur n’est pas la bonne. » Écoutez donc, fils d’Israël: est-ce ma conduite qui n’est pas la bonne ? N’est-ce pas plutôt la vôtre? Si le juste se détourne de sa justice, commet le mal, et meurt dans cet état, c’est à cause de son mal qu’il mourra. Si le méchant se détourne de sa méchanceté pour pratiquer le droit et la justice, il sauvera sa vie. Il a ouvert les yeux et s’est détourné de ses crimes. C’est certain, il vivra, il ne mourra pas.

Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre, et si quelqu’un commet un meurtre, il devra passer en jugement. Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis : Tout homme qui se met en colère contre son frère devra passer en jugement. Si quelqu’un insulte son frère, il devra passer devant le tribunal. Si quelqu’un le traite de fou, il sera passible de la géhenne de feu. Donc, lorsque tu vas présenter ton offrande à l’autel, si, là, tu te souviens que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi, laisse ton offrande, là, devant l’autel, va d’abord te réconcilier avec ton frère, et ensuite viens présenter ton offrande. Mets-toi vite d’accord avec ton adversaire pendant que tu es en chemin avec lui, pour éviter que ton adversaire ne te livre au juge, le juge au garde, et qu’on ne te jette en prison. Amen, je te le dis: tu n’en sortiras pas avant d’avoir payé jusqu’au dernier sou. ».

Méditation
Nous sommes tous appelés à la sainteté. Mais, faisons-nous face courageusement à la vérité du monde d’aujourd’hui, aussi bien à notre porte qu’au loin ? C’est un degré de sainteté qui est à la fois purement un don du Saint Esprit et un fruit de notre propre oubli de soi. C’est vivre chaque jour le mystère pascal dans une foi profonde et vibrante, une espérance rayonnante et un amour de Dieu et de notre prochain qui embrasse tout. La voie royale pour atteindre une telle perfection est en effet la Croix, la souffrance joyeusement offerte, car la folie de la Croix est sa gloire. Ceci peut sembler effrayant, mais sainte Thérèse de l’Enfant-Jésus et de la Sainte-Face nous dit simplement et en vérité que c’est possible si, bien qu’adultes, nous acceptons d’être spirituellement pauvres, d’être des enfants : d’être comme le Christ crucifié et ressuscité. La grandeur de Dieu se trouve dans son humilité, il devient l’un de nous pour nous rassembler tous autour du Père.

Meditation
Matthew 7:7 has not always reflected our realities. There are instances when we have sought answers from God without receiving them. Many individuals of unwavering faith have earnestly asked for years without receiving the desired response — a situation that may resonate with some of us. It becomes evident that God does not respond to our prayers by giving us what we necessarily ask for. That notwithstanding, Jesus assures us that our prayers are always answered provided they align with the Father’s will. There are times when we ask, and God tests our faith or delays the response because we may not be ready to receive the intended gift. This Gospel passage encourages patience, making clear that God will eventually grant us what is truly beneficial for us.
