Saint Nicholas, Bishop
Purple/White
He was bishop of Myra, in Lycia (now part of Turkey) and died about the middle of the fourth century. He is the patron saint of pawnbrokers, whose insignia of three golden balls represent the three purses of gold he is said to have given secretly to a poor man who could not afford dowries for his three daughters.

Behold, the Lord will come descending with splendour to visit his people with peace, and he will bestow on them eternal life.
Collect
Stir up your power, we pray, O Lord, and come, that with you to protect us, we may find rescue from the pressing dangers of our sins, and with you to set us free, we may be found worthy of salvation. Who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Isaiah 29:17-24
The Lord says this: In a short time, a very short time, shall not Lebanon become fertile land and fertile land turn into forest? The deaf, that day, will hear the words of a book and, after shadow and darkness, the eyes of the blind will see. But the lowly will rejoice in the Lord even more and the poorest exult in the Holy One of Israel; for tyrants shall be no more, and scoffers vanish, and all be destroyed who are disposed to do evil: those who gossip to incriminate others, those who try at the gate to trip the arbitrator and get the upright man’s case dismissed for groundless reasons. Therefore the Lord speaks, the God of the House of Jacob, Abraham’s redeemer: No longer shall Jacob be ashamed, no more shall his face grow pale, for he shall see what my hands have done in his midst, he shall hold my name holy. They will hallow the Holy One of Jacob, stand in awe of the God of Israel. Erring spirits will learn wisdom and murmurers accept instruction.

Meditation
“Your faith deserves it” is Jesus’s answer to the two blind men after touching their eyes. The faith of the faithful, accompanied by the sacramental gesture, is a guarantee of answered prayers. Many Christians seem to forget this fact, and sometimes they go as far as to weaken their faith by seeking their healing solely and absolutely through sacramental gestures. Through their faith, the blind men received Christ’s light and can now say, like the psalmist, “The Lord is my light.” The Lord Jesus stands out as the light which lightens our darkness and points out the way. Humanity needs to ask the Lord Jesus to have pity on her and restore her sight so that once more she may see the Lord’s designs in making them male and female and in making the womb a life-bearer and not a death chamber.

Il était moine dans l’abbaye de Moissac. Admirant la beauté des chants liturgique qu’on lui attribuait, l’évêque de Tolède vint le chercher en lui confiant la mission de rénover la musique liturgique dans son diocèse. Saint Gérald y réussit. Tant et si bien qu’il fut nommé évêque de Braga au nord du Portugal.

1ère lecture : Is 26, 1-6
En ce jour-là, ce cantique sera chanté dans le pays de Juda: Nous avons une ville forte ! Le Seigneur a mis pour nous protéger rempart et avant-mur. Ouvrez les portes ! Qu’elle entre, la nation juste, celle qui reste fidèle. Tu construis solidement la paix, Seigneur, pour ceux qui ont confiance en toi. Mettez toujours votre confiance dans le Seigneur, car le Seigneur est le Rocher pour toujours. Méditation Jésus nous met en garde contre l’illusion : il ne suffit pas de dire: Seigneur, Seigneur ! pour entrer dans le Royaume des cieux. Nous devons dire : « Seigneur, Seigneur!» mais en sachant bien qu’il ne suffit pas de le dire du bout des lèvres, alors que toutes nos décisions témoigneraient que Jésus n’est pas Seigneur pour nous. La prière, coupée de l’amour obéissant, est une illusion, sinon un mensonge. Jésus sera vraiment notre Seigneur si nous nous faisons un cœur semblable au sien, passionné par l’amour du Père. Remettre notre volonté à un autre pourrait être dangereux si cet « autre » n’était le Dieu de tendresse et de miséricorde. Vouloir ce qu’il veut, c’est choisir le bonheur. Vouloir autre chose, c’est prendre le risque d’une construction fragile. Écouter Jésus, parole d’amour du Père, c’est l’attitude chrétienne par excellence. Laisser cette parole nous transformer, nous conformer à la volonté aimante du Père, l’écouter et le laisser vivre en nous!

Saint Birinus
Purple
Birinus was sent to England as a missionary by Pope Honorius I about the year 634. He died about 650 and the main Church of the West Saxons which he had established at Dorchester-on-Thames was later moved to Winchester, as were the relics of Saint Birinus.

Meditation
A rock represents stability, consistency, and concreteness… Of course, it is also a symbol of rigidity and hardness, but that is not the point here. Stability means not being blown around by every wind of thought, passing enthusiasm, or passing fashion. Consistency entails not relying on brilliant words alone but putting the weight of one’s life behind each word we speak – so much so and so habitually that no words are required. Concreteness means not avoiding challenges, but confronting them head-on, even if they threaten to test or defeat us severely. Since the Incarnation, abstract-sounding realities like the mind of God, the will of God, etc., have become concrete in Christ. “You are the house whose foundations are the apostles and prophets, and whose cornerstone is Christ Jesus” (Eph 2:20).

Saint John Damascene, Priest, Doctor
Purple
He was born of a Christian family in Damascus in the second half of the seventh century. He wrote many theological treatises in a dangerously clear and accessible style. Sometimes known as “the last of the Church Fathers,” he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1883.

The Lord will come and he will not delay. He will illumine what is hidden in darkness and reveal himself to all the nations.

Prepare our hearts, we pray, O Lord our God, by your divine power, so that at the coming of Christ your Son we may be found worthy of the banquet of eternal life and merit to receive heavenly nourishment from his hands. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

The crowds were astonished to see the dumb speaking, the cripples whole again, the lame walking and the blind with their sight, and they praised the God of Israel. But Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I feel sorry for all these people; they have been with me for three days now and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them off hungry, they might collapse on the way.’ The disciples said to him, ‘Where could we get enough bread in this deserted place to feed such a crowd?’ Jesus said to them, ‘How many loaves have you?’ ‘Seven’ they said ‘and a few small fish.’ Then he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves and the fish, and he gave thanks and broke them and handed them to the disciples, who gave them to the crowds. Meditation
It may not seem like miracles happen in the world of today. We know the likelihood of a severe illness or condition being cured is slim. However, if we grasp this and have faith, we can witness the miracles in our day-to-day lives to prove that we experience more joys than sorrows. Even if the blessings are modest or large, they are still lovely presents we might get. Every one of us is sick or disabled somehow, and we all want Jesus to heal us. However, we must thank God for all the blessings he has given us.

Prière d’ouverture
Apprête nos cœurs, Dieu très bon, par la puissance de ta grâce ; pour qu’au jour où ton Fils viendra, il nous juge dignes de prendre place à sa table et de recevoir, de sa main, le pain du Ciel. Lui qui règne.
1ère Lecture : Isaïe 25, 6-10a
En ce jour- là, le Seigneur de l’univers préparera pour tous les peuples, sur sa montagne, un festin de viandes grasses et de vins capiteux, un festin de viandes succulentes et de vins décantés. Sur cette montagne, il fera disparaître le voile de deuil qui enveloppe tous les peuples et le linceul qui couvre toutes les nations. Il fera disparaître la mort pour toujours. Le Seigneur Dieu essuiera les larmes sur tous les visages, et par toute la terre il effacera l’humiliation de son peuple. Le Seigneur a parlé. Et ce jour- là, on dira : « Voici notre Dieu, en lui nous espérions, et il nous a sauvés ; c’est lui le Seigneur, en lui nous espérions; exultons, réjouissons-nous : il nous a sauvés ! » Car la main du Seigneur reposera sur cette montagne.

Évangile : Matthieu 15, 29-37
En ce temps- là, Jésus arriva près de la mer de Galilée. Il gravit la montagne et là, il s’assit. De grandes foules s’approchèrent de lui, avec des boiteux, des aveugles, des estropiés, des muets, et beaucoup d’autres encore ; on les déposa à ses pieds et il les guérit. Alors la foule était dans l’admiration en voyant des muets qui parlaient, des estropiés rétablis, des boiteux qui marchaient, des aveugles qui voyaient ; et ils rendirent gloire au Dieu d’Israël. Jésus appela ses disciples et leur dit : « Je suis saisi de compassion pour cette foule, car depuis trois jours déjà ils restent auprès de moi, et n’ont rien à manger. Je ne veux pas les renvoyer à jeun, ils pourraient défaillir en chemin. » Les disciples lui disent : « Où trouverons-nous dans un désert assez de pain pour rassasier une telle foule ? » Jésus leur demanda: « Combien de pains avez-vous? » Ils dirent : « Sept, et quelques petits poissons. » Alors il ordonna à la foule de s’asseoir par terre. Il prit les sept pains et les poissons; rendant grâce, il les rompit, et il les donnait aux disciples, et les disciples aux foules. Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés.

Seigneur notre Dieu, nous attendons de ta miséricorde Que cette nourriture prise à ton autel nous empêche de céder à nos penchants mauvais et nous prépare aux fêtes qui approchent. Par Jésus.
Méditation L’évangéliste note qu’après la multiplication des pains, la foule assemblée rendit gloire au Dieu d’Israël. Le but de ce miracle est donc de montrer que tous les hommes indistinctement peuvent être sauvés. Les disciples comprennent alors combien la tâche, qui leur sera confiée, est démesurée. Où trouverons-nous dans un désert assez de pain pour qu’une telle foule mange à sa faim ? Comment ferons-nous, maintenant, pour que, par-delà les frontières de la Palestine, toutes les cultures soient embrassées dans la mission salvatrice du Christ ? Notre propre conversion, porter témoignage et annoncer au monde entier l’Évangile constituent des tâches démesurément grandes. Où trouverons-nous, Seigneur, le moyen et le courage de répondre aux besoins de vérité, de justice et d’amour dont l’humanité tout entière a soif ? Notre action dans le monde peut être conduite selon le dessein du Père en évitant la violence et l’injustice à condition de reconnaître que nous avons toujours besoin de l’aide du Seigneur.
