Saint Paulin de Nole, Evêque
VERT
Ce riche patricien romain (353-431), né à Bordeaux, consul en 378, se convertit, est baptisé en 389 et donne ses biens aux pauvres. Ordonné prêtre, il se retire avec sa femme Thérèse et quelques disciples à Nole (Italie), dont il devient évêque en 409. Il y vit dans la prière et la pauvreté, tout dévoué à son troupeau, spécialement aux heures de calamités résultant de l’invasion des Goths.

Ecoute, Seigneur, je t’appelle. Toi qui t’es fait mon protecteur, ne me quitte pas, ne m’abandonne pas, Dieu, mon sauveur !
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu tout-puissant, force de ceux qui espèrent en toi, sois favorable à nos appels: Puisque l’homme est fragile et que, sans toi, il ne peut rien, donne-nous toujours le secours de ta grâce. Ainsi nous pourrons, en observant tes commandements, vouloir et agir de manière à répondre à ton amour. Par Jésus, le Christ, notre Seigneur. Amen.
1ère lecture : 2 Ch 24, 17-25
Après la mort de Joad, les princes de Juda vinrent se prosterner devant le roi Joas, et alors le roi les écouta. Les gens abandonnèrent la maison du Seigneur, Dieu de leurs pères, pour servir les poteaux sacrés et les idoles. À cause de cette infidélité, la colère de Dieu s’abattit sur Juda et sur Jérusalem. Pour les ramener à lui, Dieu envoya chez eux des prophètes. Ceux-ci transmirent le message, mais personne ne les écouta. Dieu revêtit de son esprit Zacharie, le fils du prêtre Joad. Zacharie se présenta devant le peuple et lui dit : « Ainsi parle Dieu : Pourquoi transgressez-vous les commandements du Seigneur ? Cela fera votre malheur : puisque vous avez abandonné le Seigneur, le Seigneur vous abandonne. » Ils s’ameutèrent alors contre lui et, par commandement du roi, le lapidèrent sur le parvis de la maison du Seigneur. Le roi Joas, en faisant mourir Zacharie, fils de Joad, oubliait la fidélité que Joad lui avait témoignée. Zacharie s’était écrié en mourant: « Que le Seigneur le voie, et qu’il fasse justice !» Or, à la fin de l’année, l’armée d’Aram monta contre le roi Joas et arriva en Juda et à Jérusalem. Ses hommes massacrèrent tous les princes du peuple et envoyèrent tout le butin au roi de Damas. L’armée d’Aram ne comptait qu’un petit nombre d’hommes, et pourtant le Seigneur leur livra une armée très importante, parce que les gens de Juda avaient abandonné le Seigneur, Dieu de leurs pères ; et Joas reçut le châtiment qu’il méritait. Lorsque les Araméens partirent, le laissant dans de grandes souffrances, ses serviteurs complotèrent contre lui parce qu’il avait répandu le sang du fils du prêtre Joad, et ils le tuèrent sur son lit. Il mourut, et on l’ensevelit dans la Cité de David, mais non pas dans les tombeaux des rois.

Évangile : Mt 6, 24-34
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples: « Nul ne peut servir deux maîtres: ou bien il haïra l’un et aimera l’autre, ou bien il s’attachera à l’un et méprisera l’autre. Vous ne pouvez pas servir à la fois Dieu et l’Argent. C’est pourquoi je vous dis : Ne vous souciez pas, pour votre vie, de ce que vous mangerez, ni, pour votre corps, de quoi vous le vêtirez. La vie ne vaut-elle pas plus que la nourriture, et le corps plus que les vêtements ? Regardez les oiseaux du ciel : ils ne font ni semailles ni moisson,ils n’amassent pas dans des greniers, et votre Père céleste les nourrit. Vous-mêmes, ne valez-vous pas beaucoup plus qu’eux ? Qui d’entre vous, en se faisant du souci, peut ajouter une coudée à la longueur de sa vie ? Et au sujet des vêtements, pourquoi se faire tant de souci ? Observez comment poussent les lis des champs : ils ne travaillent pas, ils ne filent pas. Or je vous dis que Salomon lui-même, dans toute sa gloire, n’était pas habillé comme l’un d’entre eux. Si Dieu donne un tel vêtement à l’herbe des champs, qui est là aujourd’hui, et qui demain sera jetée au feu, ne fera-t-il pas bien davantage pour vous, hommes de peu de foi ? Ne vous faites donc pas tant de souci ; ne dites pas : “Qu’allons-nous manger ?” ou bien : “Qu’allons-nous boire ?” ou encore : “Avec quoi nous habiller ?” Tout cela, les païens le recherchent. Mais votre Père céleste sait que vous en avez besoin. Cherchez d’abord le royaume de Dieu et sa justice, et tout cela vous sera donné par surcroît. Ne vous faites pas de souci pour demain : demain aura souci de lui-même ; à chaque jour suffit sa peine. »

Tu as voulu que nous trouvions, Seigneur dans les biens de la Vie, de l’Amour, de la Charité, de la Vérité et de la Sagesse que nous te présentons, les nourritures de cette vie et le sacrement de Vie, d’Amour, de Charité, de Vérité, et de Sagesse d’une vie nouvelle; fais que nos corps et nos âmes puissent toujours en bénéficier. Méditation
Ce passage de l’Evangile est d’une grande beauté. Jésus nous présente un Dieu amour et généreux. Nous pouvons faire confiance à Dieu pour nous fournir ce dont nous avons besoins quand nous agissons d’abord pour son Royaume. Dieu nous fait confiance, Il nous a donné la vie et nous appelle à Lui être uni. Certes, nous avons besoin de quoi vivre et nous vêtir, mais un souci excessif à ce sujet devient un but, au lieu d’un moyen.L’importance primordiale du message de Jésus c’est le Royaume, mais pas un royaume de pouvoir et de commandement. C’est un message d’amour et de justice qui doit imprégner toutes nos relations. Quand nous relisons notre passé, nous découvrons que Dieu nous a soutenus et guidés à travers toutes nos difficultés jusqu’à ce jour. Notre identité se trouve dans notre relation avec Dieu qui nous aime et nous demande de lui faire confiance.

He was born in London, the son of a judge, and himself became an eminent lawyer. He was tried on the charge of high treason for denying the King’s supreme headship of the Church, found guilty, and sentenced to death. He went to his execution, on 6 July 1535.

First reading : 2 Chronicles 24: 17-25
After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came to pay court to the king, and the king now turned to them for advice. The Judaeans abandoned the Temple of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, for the worship of sacred poles and idols. Because of their guilt, God’s anger fell on Judah and Jerusalem. He sent them prophets to bring them back to the Lord, but when these gave their message, they would not listen. The spirit of God took possession of Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood up before the people and said, ‘God says this, “Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord to no good purpose? You have deserted the Lord, now he deserts you.”’ They then plotted against him and by order of the king stoned him in the court of the Temple of the Lord. King Joash, forgetful of the kindness that Jehoiada, the father of Zechariah, had shown him, killed Jehoiada’s son who cried out as he died, ‘The Lord sees and he will avenge!’ When a year had gone by, the Aramaean army made war on Joash. They reached Judah and Jerusalem, and executed all the officials among the people, sending back to the king at Damascus all that they had plundered from them. Though the Aramaean army had by no means come in force, the Lord delivered into its power an army of great size for having deserted him, the God of their ancestors. The Aramaeans treated Joash as he had deserved, and when they retired they left him a very sick man; and his officers, plotting against him to avenge the death of the son of Jehoiada the priest, murdered him in his bed. So he died, and they buried him in the Citadel of David, though not in the tombs of the kings.

You cannot be the slave both of God and of money. ‘That is why I am telling you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your body and how you are to clothe it. Surely life means more than food, and the body more than clothing! Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are we not worth much more than they are? Can any of you, for all his worrying, add one single cubit to his span of life? And why worry about clothing? Think of the flowers growing in the fields; they never have to work or spin; yet I assure you that not even Solomon in all his regalia was robed like one of these. Now if that is how God clothes the grass in the field which is there today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, will he not much more look after you, you men of little faith? So do not worry; do not say, “What are we to eat? What are we to drink? How are we to be clothed?” It is the pagans who set their hearts on all these things. Your heavenly Father knows you need them all. Set your hearts on his kingdom first, and on his righteousness, and all these other things will be given you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow: tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.’
Prayer over the Offerings
O God, who in the offerings presented here provide for the twofold needs of human nature, nourishing us with food and renewing us with your Sacrament, grant, we pray, that the sustenance they provide may not fail us in body or in spirit. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
Many Christians today lack serenity of heart, so much so that the slightest trivialities easily trigger them. Jesus asks a fundamental question, «WHY WORRY?» The underlying foundation of this question posed by Jesus is born out of his constant call on us to live lives of contentment and total submission to God’s divine providence. We must come to terms with the fact that our worries only make matters worse and solves practically nothing. We must be imbued with the spiritual consciousness that God our Father is always on hand and right in time to provide whatever we need at each given point in time. He did not create us to become subjects of ridicule but to be responsible, productive and dutiful with unreserved trust in him who sustains our wellbeing.

At the age of 16 he became a Jesuit novice in Rome. Aloysius, still a novice, worked hard helping patients infected by the plague. He himself caught the plague. He died at midnight on the 20th of June with the name of Jesus on his lips.

First reading : 2 Kings 11:1-4,9-18,20
When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah learned that her son was dead, she promptly did away with all those of royal stock. But Jehosheba, daughter of King Jehoram and sister of Ahaziah, secretly took away Jehoash, her brother’s son, from among the sons of the king who were being murdered, and put him with his nurse in the sleeping quarters; in this way she hid him from Athaliah, and he was not put to death. He stayed with her for six years, hidden in the Temple of the Lord, while Athaliah governed the country. In the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders of hundreds of the Carians and of the guards, and had them brought to him in the Temple of the Lord. He made a pact with them and, putting them under oath, showed them the king’s son. The commanders of hundreds did everything as Jehoiada the priest had ordered. They brought their men, those coming off duty on the sabbath together with those mounting guard on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. The priest equipped the commanders of hundreds with King David’s spears and shields which were in the Temple of the Lord. The guards formed up, each man with his weapon in his hand, from the south corner to the north corner of the Temple, surrounding the altar and the Temple.’ Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son, put the crown and armlets on him, and he anointed him king. They clapped their hands and shouted, ‘Long live the king!’ Athaliah, on hearing the shouts of the people made for the Temple of the Lord where the people were. When she saw the king standing there beside the pillar, as the custom was, with the captains and trumpeters at the king’s side, and all the country people rejoicing and sounding trumpets, Athaliah tore her garments and shouted, ‘Treason, treason!’ Then Jehoiada the priest gave the order to the army officers: ‘Take her outside the precincts and put to death anyone who follows her.’ ‘For’ the priest had reasoned, ‘she must not be put to death in the Temple of the Lord.’ They seized her, and when she had reached the palace through the Entry of the Horses, she was put to death there. Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and king and people, by which the latter undertook to be the people of the Lord; and also between king and people. All the country people then went to the temple of Baal and demolished it; they smashed his altars and his images and killed Mattan, priest of Baal, in front of the altars. The priest posted sentries to guard the Temple of the Lord. All the country people were delighted, and the city made no move. And they put Athaliah to death in the royal palace.

Meditation
Treasures on earth are vulnerable to dissipating and destroying forces; treasures in heaven are safe. Furthermore, «where your treasure is, there will also be your heart.» We devote the majority of our time and energy to earning a living. We want to receive more than we need, share some with others, and save some for the future. This instruction is not a criticism of working and saving but rather a caution to understand how these actions shape us. Jesus continues his lecture on treasure with a metaphor: the eye is the torch of the body, illuminating our way. Jesus does not disrespect people who are blind since Jesus is referring to something more profound than visual acuity. He emphasises the significance of our perceptions and their function in our development. Do the values of the heavenly kingdom influence their perspectives? Or are they influenced by selfish desires that oppose those values?

Louis (1568-1591) fut page à la cour des Médicis et à celle d’Espagne. A 17 ans, il obtient d’entrer chez les Jésuites et renonce à ses droits sur la principauté de Mantoue. Son amour de la pureté lui avait inspiré de faire le vœu de chasteté dès 9 ans. Après une courte vie religieuse menée dans la fidélité la plus absolue, il est emporté par la peste en soignant les malades à Rome et peut ainsi réaliser son désir immense de se plonger dans la ‘’mer immense’’ de l’amour divin.

L’homme au Cœur pur, aux mains innocentes, celui-là peut gravir la montagne du Seigneur et demeurer dans son lieu saint.
Prière d’ouverture
Seigneur, dispensateur des dons spirituels, tu as réuni dans le jeune Louis de Gonzague la pratique de la pénitence et une admirable pureté de vie ; si nous n’avons pas la même innocence, accorde-nous, à sa prière et par ses mérites, d’imiter son renoncement. Par Jésus.

En ces jours-là, lorsque Athalie, mère d’Ocozias, apprit que son fils était mort, elle entreprit de faire périr toute la descendance royale. Mais Josabeth, fille du roi Joram et sœur d’Ocozias, prit Joas, un des fils du roi Ocozias, pour le soustraire au massacre. Elle le cacha, lui et sa nourrice, dans une chambre de la maison du Seigneur, pour le dissimuler aux regards d’Athalie ; c’est ainsi qu’il évita la mort. Il demeura avec Josabeth pendant six ans, caché dans la maison du Seigneur, tandis qu’Athalie régnait sur le pays. Au bout de sept ans, le prêtre Joad envoya chercher les officiers des mercenaires et des gardes, et les fit venir près de lui dans la maison du Seigneur. Il conclut une alliance avec eux, leur fit prêter serment dans la maison du Seigneur, et leur montra le fils du roi. Les officiers exécutèrent tous les ordres du prêtre Joad. Chacun prit ses hommes, ceux qui entraient en service le jour du sabbat, et ceux qui en sortaient ce jour-là, et tous rejoignirent le prêtre Joad. Celui-ci leur remit les lances et les carquois du roi David, qui étaient conservés dans la maison du Seigneur. Les gardes se postèrent, les armes à la main, devant l’autel, du côté sud et du côté nord de la Maison, afin d’entourer le futur roi. Alors Joad fit avancer le fils du roi, lui remit le diadème et la charte de l’Alliance, et on le fit roi. On lui donna l’onction, on l’acclama en battant des mains et en criant : « Vive le roi !» Athalie entendit cette clameur des gardes et du peuple, et elle accourut vers le peuple à la maison du Seigneur. Et voilà ce qu’elle vit : le roi debout sur l’estrade, selon le rituel ; auprès de lui les officiers et les trompettes, et tout le peuple du pays criant sa joie tandis que les trompettes sonnaient. Alors, elle déchira ses vêtements et s’écria: « Trahison ! Trahison ! » Le prêtre Joad donna cet ordre aux officiers : « Faites-la sortir de la Maison, à travers vos rangs. Si quelqu’un veut la suivre, frappez-le par l’épée. » En effet, le prêtre Joad avait interdit de la mettre à mort dans la maison du Seigneur. On mit la main sur elle, et elle arriva au palais par la porte des Chevaux. C’est là qu’elle fut mise à mort. Joad conclut une alliance entre le Seigneur, le roi et le peuple, pour que le peuple soit le peuple du Seigneur; il conclut l’alliance entre le roi et le peuple. Alors, tous les gens du pays entrèrent dans le temple de Baal et le démolirent. Ils mirent en pièces ses autels et ses statues et, devant les autels, ils tuèrent Matane, prêtre de Baal. Le prêtre Joad posta ensuite des gardes devant la maison du Seigneur. Tous les gens du pays étaient dans la joie, et la ville retrouva le calme. Quant à Athalie, on l’avait mise mort par l’épée dans la maison du roi.
Psaume : 131 (132), 11, 12, 13-14, 17-18
R/Le Seigneur a fait choix de Sion ; elle est le séjour qu’il désire.
Le Seigneur l’a juré à David, et jamais il ne reprendra sa parole : « C’est un homme issu de toi que je placerai sur ton trône.
« Si tes fils gardent mon alliance, les volontés que je leur fais connaître, leurs fils, eux aussi, à tout jamais, siégeront sur le trône dressé pour toi.»
Car le Seigneur a fait choix de Sion; elle est le séjour qu’il désire: « Voilà mon repos à tout jamais, c’est le séjour que j’avais désiré.
« Là, je ferai germer la force de David ; pour mon messie, j’ai allumé une lampe. Je vêtirai ses ennemis de honte, mais, sur lui, la couronne fleurira. »

Évangile : Mt 6, 19-23
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Ne vous faites pas de trésors sur la terre, là où les mites et les vers les dévorent, où les voleurs percent les murs pour voler. Mais faites-vous des trésors dans le ciel, là où il n’y a pas de mites ni de vers qui dévorent, pas de voleurs qui percent les murs pour voler. Car là où est ton trésor, là aussi sera ton cœur. La lampe du corps, c’est l’œil. Donc, si ton œil est limpide, ton corps tout entier sera dans la lumière ; mais si ton œil est mauvais, ton corps tout entier sera dans les ténèbres. Si donc la lumière qui est en toi est ténèbres, comme elles seront grandes, les ténèbres ! »

Méditation Encore un enseignement sur le Royaume de Dieu, et là encore, Jésus bouleverse notre façon habituelle de voir les choses. Jésus nous rappelle que Dieu regarde notre cœur et nous invite à nous demander où se trouvent nos vraies priorités. Un appel à ne point mettre notre cœur et nos espoirs dans les possessions matérielles, le laisser libre pour la grande œuvre du Royaume à savoir: ‘’ Aimer Dieu et s’aimer les uns les autres’’. Les lois mosaïques étaient très précises, couvrant toutes les situations et éventualités. Face a cela, Jésus invite ses auditeurs et nous aujourd’hui à un niveau plus profond de compréhension en comparant trésors terrestres et trésors célestes, les ténèbres et la lumière. Puisse le Seigneur nous aider à nous concentrer sur les options positives dans toutes les situations.

Green
During a persecution by Diocletian, Alban surrendered himself in place of a Christian priest, and so unbaptised by water, attained a baptism of blood. In the same persecution Julius and Aaron, at Caerleon on Usk, are named among others who gave their lives for the faith.

O God, strength of those who hope in you, graciously hear our pleas, and, since without you, mortal frailty can do nothing, grant us always the help of your grace, that in following your commands, we may please you by our resolve and our deeds. First reading : Ecclesiasticus 48:1-15
The prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch. It was he who brought famine on the people, and who decimated them in his zeal. By the word of the Lord, he shut up the heavens, he also, three times, brought down fire. How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have? – rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol by the word of the Most High; dragging kings down to destruction,and high dignitaries from their beds; hearing reproof on Sinai, and decrees of punishment on Horeb; anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you; taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses; designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God’s wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts of fathers towards their children, and to restore the tribes of Jacob, Happy shall they be who see you, and those who have fallen asleep in love; for we too will have life. Elijah was shrouded in the whirlwind, and Elisha was filled with his spirit; throughout his life no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him. No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied. In his lifetime he performed wonders,and in death his works were marvellous.

Gospel : Matthew 6:7-15
Jesus said to his disciples, ‘In your prayers do not babble as the pagans do, for they think that by using many words they will make themselves heard. Do not be like them; your Father knows what you need before you ask him. So you should pray like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be held holy, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven those who are in debt to us. And do not put us to the test, but save us from the evil one ‘Yes, if you forgive others their failings, your heavenly Father will forgive you yours; but if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive your failings either.’
Prayer over the Offerings
O God, who in the offerings presented here provide for the twofold needs of human nature, nourishing us with food and renewing us with your Sacrament, grant, we pray, that the sustenance they provide may not fail us in body or in spirit. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
As this reception of your Holy Communion, O Lord, foreshadows the union of the faithful in you, so may it bring about unity in your Church. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Today, Matthew gives us a catechesis on prayer in the words of Jesus. The purpose and foundation for our prayer should not just be that we need something, and we should not believe that using a torrent of words makes our prayer more effective. We pray because Jesus wants us to, and we have faith in our Father, who knows what we need before we ask. In our prayers, we should prioritise God and his kingdom, expressed and transmitted to us via food, forgiveness, and protection.
