Saint Turibius of Mongrovejo
(1538 – 1606)
Purple
He was born in Spain in about 1538 and studied law at the University of Salamanca. He was named bishop of Lima in 1580. He was full of apostolic zeal. He died in Lima on 23 March 1606.

Gospel : John 11:45-56
Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and had seen what Jesus did believed in him, but some of them went to tell the Pharisees what Jesus had done. Then the chief priests and Pharisees called a meeting. ‘Here is this man working all these signs’ they said ‘and what action are we taking? If we let him go on in this way everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy the Holy Place and our nation.’ One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, ‘You do not seem to have grasped the situation at all; you fail to see that it is better for one man to die for the people, than for the whole nation to be destroyed.’ He did not speak in his own person, it was as high priest that he made this prophecy that Jesus was to die for the nation – and not for the nation only, but to gather together in unity the scattered children of God. From that day they were determined to kill him. So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town called Ephraim, in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples. The Jewish Passover drew near, and many of the country people who had gone up to Jerusalem to purify themselves looked out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, ‘What do you think? Will he come to the festival or not?’

Meditation
While Jesus went about doing good and bringing people to the kingdom of God, the Chief Priests and Pharisees in his time were interested in politics. In today’s gospel, we hear the Jews being afraid of the Roman authorities and looking for a way to kill the son of God. They feared that Jesus was proving to be a king parallel to Caesar, and if Rome heard it, it would query them and maybe reduce their authority. Whenever religion and politics mingle, most often, religion pays for it. The Church tries to look at politics from a distance though encouraging her children to participate to sanitise it. Religion remains a sign that points humanity to its meaning and reminds us that there is a reason why we are here. As Christians, we must not let political matters dissuade us from defending truth and justice.

Archevêque de Lima à quarante-deux ans, il s’efforce de réparer les erreurs et les injustices commises par les conquérants vis-à-vis des Indiens. Il se heurte à la résistance des gouverneurs eux-mêmes ; mais ses adversaires ne peuvent venir à bout de sa patience inébranlable et de sa douce fermeté. Quand il meurt, une réforme profonde était déjà accomplie.

Évangile : Jean 11, 45-57
En ce temps-là, quand Lazare fut sorti du tombeau, beaucoup de Juifs, qui étaient venus auprès de Marie et avaient donc vu ce que Jésus avait fait, crurent en lui. Mais quelques-uns allèrent trouver les pharisiens pour leur raconter ce qu’il avait fait. Les grands prêtres et les pharisiens réunirent donc le Conseil suprême ; ils disaient : « Qu’allons-nous faire ? Cet homme accomplit un grand nombre de signes. Si nous le laissons faire, tout le monde va croire en lui, et les Romains viendront détruire notre Lieu saint et notre nation.» Alors, l’un d’entre eux, Caïphe, qui était grand prêtre cette année-là, leur dit : « Vous n’y comprenez rien vous ne voyez pas quel est votre intérêt : il vaut mieux qu’un seul homme meure pour le peuple, et que l’ensemble de la nation ne périsse pas. » Ce qu’il disait-là ne venait pas de lui-même ; mais, étant grand prêtre cette année-là, il prophétisa que Jésus allait mourir pour la nation; et ce n’était pas seulement pour la nation, c’était afin de rassembler dans l’unité les enfants de Dieu dispersés. À partir de ce jour-là, ils décidèrent de le tuer. C’est pourquoi Jésus ne se déplaçait plus ouvertement parmi les Juifs ; il partit pour la région proche du désert, dans la ville d’Éphraïm où il séjourna avec ses disciples. Or, la Pâque juive était proche, et beaucoup montèrent de la campagne à Jérusalem pour se purifier avant la Pâque. Ils cherchaient Jésus et, dans le Temple, ils se disaient entre eux : « Qu’en pensez-vous ? Il ne viendra sûrement pas à la fête ! » Les grands prêtres et les pharisiens avaient donné des ordres : quiconque saurait où il était devait le dénoncer, pour qu’on puisse l’arrêter.

Méditation
La décision est prise : il doit mourir, ce Jésus dont le dernier signe du retour à la vie de Lazare a convaincu plusieurs juifs d’adhésion de foi en sa messianité comme en sa divinité. Mais hélas, que fera sa mise à mort qui semble être d’un grand intérêt pour les autorités religieuses juives en perte de crédibilité face à lui ? Que fera-t-elle pour la nation d’Israël que grands prêtres et pharisiens pensent ainsi préserver des foudres romaines de sa prétention messianique ? Elle ne fera que rassembler les enfants de Dieu dispersés, afin que des extrémités de la terre nous formions le peuple de l’alliance nouvelle en son nom. Cette Alliance que le Seigneur a promis de conclure, par la bouche du prophète Ézéchiel, dans la première lecture. Eh oui, la mort alors prophétique de Jésus nous fera bien réaliser que Dieu sait faire concourir à notre plus grand bien, et à celui des autres, même le plus grand mal qu’on croirait pouvoir nous faire. Faisons-lui donc absolument confiance, comme Jésus Christ, son Fils.

Meditation
Jesus was about to be stoned for calling God his Father, and he did not retract or apologise. He instead fired the harder. Winston Churchill once said, “It is better to die on the battlefield than in the glory of sleep.” Many Christians live in situations where it is challenging to profess their faith in Christ. Many lose their lives every day because they believe in Jesus. Some are even ashamed that they will be given nicknames for praying in public or making the sign of the cross around people. While this may be understood as an effort to avoid hypocrisy, it is worth noting that there will always be ‘Pharisees’ wanting to stone us for our faith. Are you a convinced Christian or a Christian by convenience?

Elle faisait partie de ces nobles dames romaines admiratrices de saint Jérôme. Admirative, elle écoutait les leçons d’Ecritures Saintes qu’il donnait à Rome. Devenue veuve, elle distribua ses biens aux pauvres et entra dans un monastère romain dont elle devint la supérieure. Saint Jérôme lui consacrera une lettre dithyrambique.

En ce temps-là, de nouveau, des Juifs prirent des pierres pour lapider Jésus. Celui-ci reprit la parole : « J’ai multiplié sous vos yeux les œuvres bonnes qui viennent du Père. Pour laquelle de ces œuvres voulez-vous me lapider ? » Ils lui répondirent: «Ce n’est pas pour une œuvre bonne que nous voulons te lapider, mais c’est pour un blasphème: tu n’es qu’un homme, et tu te fais Dieu. » Jésus leur répliqua : «N’est-il pas écrit dans votre Loi : J’ai dit: Vous êtes des dieux ? Elle les appelle donc des dieux, ceux à qui la parole de Dieu s’adressait, et l’Écriture ne peut pas être abolie. Or, celui que le Père a consacré et envoyé dans le monde, vous lui dites: “Tu blasphèmes”, parce que j’ai dit : “Je suis le Fils de Dieu”. Si je ne fais pas les œuvres de mon Père, continuez à ne pas me croire. Mais si je les fais, même si vous ne me croyez pas, croyez les œuvres. Ainsi vous reconnaîtrez, et de plus en plus, que le Père est en moi, et moi dans le Père.» Eux cherchaient de nouveau à l’arrêter, mais il échappa à leurs mains. Il repartit de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à l’endroit où, au début, Jean baptisait; et il y demeura. Beaucoup vinrent à lui en déclarant : « Jean n’a pas accompli de signe ; mais tout ce que Jean a dit de celui-ci était vrai. » Et là, beaucoup crurent en lui.

Dans son corps, le Christ a porté nos péchés sur le bois de la croix, afin que nous puissions mourir à nos péchés et vivre selon la justice: c’est par ses blessures que vous avez été guéris.

Que la force de cette communion, Seigneur, ne nous abandonne jamais; qu’elle écarte loin de nous tout ce qui pourrait nous perdre. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Le procès juif de Jésus se termine dans cette controverse avec eux sous le refus qui est le leur de croire qu’il est le Fils de Dieu. On peut voir se profiler à l’horizon sa mise à mort prochaine, pour les affirmations lourdes mais vraies qu’il leur aura faites. Jésus pouvait-il se dédire devant eux ? Non, il devait proclamer sans répit la vérité, au risque de déposer sa vie. D’où lui venait cette intrépidité qu’il nous faudrait nous aussi avoir pour la cause de Dieu et pour celle de la vérité? De sa confiance (sa foi) en Dieu. Cette confiance par laquelle brille le prophète Jérémie dans la première lecture. Celui qui la voue au Seigneur n’a plus peur et ne recule pas devant l’adversité. Plutôt, il reste serein et prie, pour confier sa cause à Dieu. Puissions-nous grandir dans cette confiance de la foi.

But I know him, and if I were to say: I do not know him, I should be a liar, as you are liars yourselves. But I do know him, and I faithfully keep his word. Look with favour, Lord, we pray, on these sacrificial offerings, that they may profit our conversion and the salvation of all the world. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
“Abraham’s blessings are mine!” goes a common song. Indeed, Abraham is blessed! Thousands of years after his death, he is still honoured by Jews, Christians and Muslims. Abraham was a man of faith. Because he believed the promises of God came to pass for him and his descendants. We may be unfaithful, but God is always faithful. (2 Tim 2:13). But it is possible to call Abraham “my father in faith”, yet to everything unlike him. To seek hostility instead of peace, to fail to trust God, and deny welcoming those who challenge us with the truth. When we do this, we get locked in our shadows. Jesus, the Rock of Ages, is promising us a new vision through his passion. Christ, the “I AM”, wishes to share with us a new life. That life will be ours when we learn to listen to, share and keep his word daily.
