SAINT Gérald
Il était moine dans l’abbaye de Moissac. Admirant la beauté des chants liturgique qu’on lui attribuait, l’évêque de Tolède vint le chercher en lui confiant la mission de rénover la musique liturgique dans son diocèse. Saint Gérald y réussit. Tant et si bien qu’il fut nommé évêque de Braga au nord du Portugal.

Voici que le Seigneur va venir et avec lui tous ceux qui ont cru en lui ; on verra, ce jour-là, une grande lumière.
Prière d’ouverture
En réponse à nos appels, Seigneur, accorde ton secours à ceux qui luttent et qui peinent : que la présence au milieu de nous de celui qui doit venir, ton Fils bien-aimé, nous redonne courage et nous préserve de la dégradation du péché. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Is 11, 1-10
En ce jour-là, un rameau sortira de la souche de Jessé, père de David, un rejeton jaillira de ses racines. Sur lui reposera l’esprit du Seigneur : esprit de sagesse et de discernement, esprit de conseil et de force, esprit de connaissance et de crainte du Seigneur, qui lui inspirera la crainte du Seigneur. Il ne jugera pas d’après les apparences, il ne tranchera pas d’après ce qu’il entend dire. Il jugera les petits avec justice, il tranchera avec droiture en faveur des pauvres du pays. Comme un bâton, sa parole frappera le pays, le souffle de ses lèvres fera mourir le méchant. Justice est la ceinture de ses hanches ; fidélité, le baudrier de ses reins. Le loup habitera avec l’agneau, le léopard se couchera près du chevreau, le veau et le lionceau seront nourris ensemble, un petit garçon les conduira. La vache et l’ourse auront même pâturage, leurs petits auront même gîte. Le lion, comme le bœuf, mangera du fourrage. Le nourrisson s’amusera sur le nid du cobra, sur le trou de la vipère l’enfant étendra la main. Il ne se fera plus rien de mauvais ni de corrompu sur ma montagne sainte; car la connaissance du Seigneur remplira le pays comme les eaux recouvrent le fond de la mer. Ce jour-là, la racine de Jessé, père de David, sera dressée comme un étendard pour les peuples, les nations la chercheront, et la gloire sera sa demeure.

Oui, Père, tu l’as voulu ainsi dans ta bonté. Méditation
Dans l’évangile, saint Luc appelle les chrétiens à partager dès aujourd’hui et toujours la joie de Jésus. Rempli de l’Esprit Saint, Il tressaille de joie en entendant les faits et gestes que racontent les soixante-douze disciples envoyés dans les localités où lui-même devait se rendre. « Je te loue, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, de ce que tu as caché ces choses aux sages et aux intelligents ». Ce passage de l’évangile a été appelé par certains auteurs, avec justesse, le «Magnificat de Jésus», puisqu’il comporte l’idée sous-jacente de celle exposée par Marie dans son cantique. La gratitude est une des facettes de l’humilité. L’arrogant estime ne rien devoir à personne. Pour remercier, il faut être capable de découvrir sa petitesse. “Merci” est un des premiers mots que l’on apprend aux enfants. Benoît XVI, parlant de l’attitude d’adoration, affirme qu’elle suppose une «reconnaissance de la présence de Dieu, Créateur et Seigneur de l’univers. C’est une reconnaissance emplie de gratitude, qui part du plus profond du cœur et qui investit l’être tout entier. Ce n’est qu’en adorant, en aimant Dieu par-dessus tout que l’homme peut se réaliser lui-même».

SAINT Birinus
Saint Birinus was sent to England as a missionary by Pope Honourius I about the year 634. He died about 650 and the main Church of the West Saxons which he had established at Dorchester-on-Thames was later moved to Winchester, as were the relics of Saint Birinus.

First reading: Isaiah 11: 1-10
A shoot springs from the stock of Jesse, a scion thrusts from his roots: on him the spirit of the Lord rests, a spirit of wisdom and insight, a spirit of counsel and power, a spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. (The fear of the Lord is his breath.) He does not judge by appearances, he gives no verdict on hearsay, but judges the wretched with integrity, and with equity gives a verdict for the poor of the land. Meditation
A truth is being revealed to us in today’s Gospel : “Happy the eyes that see what you see, for I tell you that many prophets wanted to see what you see, and never saw it ; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.” Jesus proclaimed his disciples blessed because they saw and heard what he who came from the Father did and said respectively. Thus, the condition for the happiness of the disciples is to open their eyes to what the master shows them. The happiness of the disciple resides in listening to the teachings of his master. If we are not happy in our lives as Christians, then we should perhaps question our view of reality.

1ère lecture : Is 2, 1-5
Le prophète Isaïe a reçu cette révélation au sujet de Juda et de Jérusalem : Il arrivera dans l’avenir que la montagne du temple du Seigneur sera placée à la tête des montagnes et dominera les collines. Toutes les nations afflueront vers elle, des peuples nombreux se mettront en marche, et ils diront : « Venez, montons à la montagne du Seigneur, au temple du Dieu de Jacob. Méditation
Le Seigneur vient pour tout transformer. Les nations seront libérées de leur insouciance et elles entendront la voix du Seigneur. Il y aura la paix et, les engins de guerres, les mentalités destructives deviendront artisans de paix et de joie pour les autres : « ils briseront leurs épées pour en faire des socs et leurs lances pour en faire des serpes… ». Dans l’évangile de ce jour, Jésus vient pour relever ceux qui sont couchés, paralysés, ceux qui souffrent. Et pour ce fait, son Avènement implique une attente ; non pas une entente passive, mais une attente en tant que tension, une sortie vers le Seigneur qui vient. Jésus comme le Messie, le Germe, est celui qui fera l’honneur et la gloire des rescapés d’Israël. Sa venue apporte le salut comme ce fut au temps de la sortie d’Egypte. Il vient pour guérir. Le temps de l’Avent favorise et hâte le dessein de la rencontre dans la pénitence, dans la joie. Joie parce que Jésus vient pour tout renouveler et tout sauver. Jésus vient pour s’occuper de nos infirmités et de notre vie de ténèbres épaisses.

SAINT John Damascene,
priest, Doctor
He was born of a Christian family in Damascus in the second half of the seventh century. He wrote many theological treatises in a dangerously clear and accessible style. Sometimes known as “the last of the Church Fathers,” he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1883.

Meditation
The faith of the centurion draws our attention our own faith. He a non-Jew, someone considered to be a pagan, recognized Jesus as the one sent by the Father to save, free and liberate humanity. This explains Jesus’ astonishment at the faith of the centurion: « I tell you solemnly, nowhere in Israel have I found faith like this ». The Lord challenges us today. Can he say the same of us at end of today? Whatever be the depth of our pain, of our sins, of our needs, of our worries, can we like the centurion say to the Lord « Say only a word and I shall be healed »? These words which we repeat every day at Mass are not vain. The experience of the centurion shows us that if we pronounce them with faith, the Lord will react and heal us. Let us live up to this challenge of faith today and forever.

Meditation
We are invited today, dear brothers and sisters, to be attentive as we await the coming of our saviour Jesus Christ. The Gospel is clear on this: “keep watch, for you do not know the moment”. This moment is that of the coming of the master, the son of man. Advent is principally the time to keep watch for the coming of Christ. His coming in the flesh at Christmas, his coming in glory at the end of time, and especially his coming in our daily activities and in our brothers and sisters. This time of waiting can be applied to all Christian life, for the Lord visits us daily. But are we vigilant to his visits? We need concrete preparation before meeting the Lord, and only God can help us to keep watch in prayers as we await his coming. God’s time is now!
