SAINT Margaret Mary Alacoque
She joined the Visitation Sisters at Paray-le-Monial. She made rapid progress along the way of perfection and was given mystical visions as a result of which she worked hard to institute devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Church.

First reading: Romans 1:1-7
From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus who has been called to be an apostle, and specially chosen to preach the Good News that God promised long ago through his prophets in the scriptures. This news is about the Son of God who, according to the human nature he took was a descendant of David: it is about Jesus Christ our Lord who, in the order of the spirit, the spirit of holiness that was in him, was proclaimed Son of God in all his power through his resurrection from the dead. Through him we received grace and our apostolic mission to preach the obedience of faith to all pagan nations in honour of his name. You are one of these nations, and by his call belong to Jesus Christ. Meditation
Jesus’ rebuke is severe. What more does this generation need from him? He, the Son of God, is there in their midst, and they want more. In fact, it is not a sign that they want, but proof, which is quite different. Proof leaves no room for freedom, not even for trust, it is imposed and cannot be discussed. To be effective, a sign requires recognition, a responsible act of faith. What use is an indication on a path if we refuse to follow it? God does not impose himself in our lives, he gives us discreet signs of his presence, signs that we must recognise and welcome. Signs that show us a path, that of conversion of the eyes and the heart. It is up to us to set out freely.

Prière d’ouverture
Nous t’en prions, Seigneur, que ta grâce nous devance et qu’elle nous accompagne toujours, pour nous rendre attentifs à faire le bien sans relâche. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Is 25, 6-10a
Le Seigneur de l’univers préparera pour tous les peuples, sur sa montagne, un festin de viandes grasses et de vins capiteux, un festin de viandes succulentes et de vins décantés. Sur cette montagne, il fera disparaître le voile de deuil qui enveloppe tous les peuples et le linceul qui couvre toutes les nations. Il fera disparaître la mort pour toujours. Le Seigneur Dieu essuiera les larmes sur tous les visages, et par toute la terre il effacera l’humiliation de son peuple. Le Seigneur a parlé. Et ce jour-là, on dira : « Voici notre Dieu, en lui nous espérions, et il nous a sauvés ; c’est lui le Seigneur, en lui nous espérions ; exultons, réjouissons-nous : il nous a sauvés !» Car la main du Seigneur reposera sur cette montagne.

Frères, je sais vivre de peu, je sais aussi être dans l’abondance. J’ai été formé à tout et pour tout : à être rassasié et à souffrir la faim, à être dans l’abondance et dans les privations. Je peux tout en celui qui me donne la force. Cependant, vous avez bien fait de vous montrer solidaires quand j’étais dans la gêne. Et mon Dieu comblera tous vos besoins selon sa richesse, magnifiquement, dans le Christ Jésus. Gloire à Dieu notre Père pour les siècles des siècles. Amen.

Évangile: Mt 22, 1-14
En ce temps-là, Jésus se mit de nouveau à parler aux grands prêtres et aux pharisiens, et il leur dit en paraboles : « Le royaume des Cieux est comparable à un roi qui célébra les noces de son fils. Il envoya ses serviteurs appeler à la noce les invités, mais ceux-ci ne voulaient pas venir. Il envoya encore d’autres serviteurs dire aux invités : ‘Voilà : j’ai préparé mon banquet, mes bœufs et mes bêtes grasses sont égorgés ; tout est prêt : venez à la noce.’ Mais ils n’en tinrent aucun compte et s’en allèrent, l’un à son champ, l’autre à son commerce; les autres empoignèrent les serviteurs, les maltraitèrent et les tuèrent. Le roi se mit en colère, il envoya ses troupes, fit périr les meurtriers et incendia leur ville. Alors il dit à ses serviteurs : ‘Le repas de noce est prêt, mais les invités n’en étaient pas dignes. Allez donc aux croisées des chemins : tous ceux que vous trouverez, invitez-les à la noce.’ Les serviteurs allèrent sur les chemins, rassemblèrent tous ceux qu’ils trouvèrent, les mauvais comme les bons, et la salle de noce fut remplie de convives.

Avec ces offrandes, Seigneur, reçois les prières de tes fidèles. Que cette liturgie célébrée avec amour nous fasse passer à la gloire du ciel. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Un festin de noces royal : voilà l’image que Jésus nous présente pour exprimer le bonheur que Dieu veut partager avec nous pour l’éternité. Déjà apparaissait avec le prophète Isaïe l’espérance que Dieu enlèverait le voile de deuil qui recouvre la terre. L’homme n’est pas un être-pour-la-mort ; il a été créé pour vivre avec Dieu dans un amour nuptial. Et c’est Jésus ressuscité qui nous donne accès à la salle des noces. Voici l’Epoux, venez à sa rencontre ! Dieu nous appelle ; dans son amour miséricordieux, il nous revêt de la robe nuptiale pour célébrer la Pâque de son Fils bien-aimé ; le festin du Royaume, comme dès ici-bas dans l’Eucharistie. Nous sommes tous invités, attendus au festin des noces de l’Agneau.

Jesus began to speak to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son’s wedding. He sent his servants to call those who had been invited, but they would not come. Next he sent some more servants. ‘Tell those who have been invited’ he said, ‘that I have my banquet all prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to the wedding.’ But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business, and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and killed them. The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to be unworthy, go to the crossroads in the town and invite everyone you can find to the wedding.’ So these servants went out on to the roads and collected together everyone they could find, bad and good alike; and the wedding hall was filled with guests. When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a wedding garment, and said to him, ‘How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?’ And the man was silent. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and throw him out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.’

Meditation
A royal wedding feast: this is the image that Jesus presents to us to express the happiness that God wants to share with us for eternity. Already with the prophet Isaiah, there appeared the hope that God would remove the veil of mourning that covers the earth. Man is not meant for death; he was created to live with God in a nuptial love. And it is the risen Jesus who gives us access to the wedding hall. Here is the Bridegroom, come and meet him! God calls us; in his merciful love, he clothes us in the wedding dress to celebrate the Passover of his beloved Son; the feast of the Kingdom, as already here below in the Eucharist. We are all invited, awaited at the wedding feast of the Lamb.

SAINT Callistus I, Pope
From a weakened ex-slave in receipt of an invalidity pension, Callistus rose to be archdeacon, had charge of the Roman catacomb which now bears his name, and ended up as Pope. He lived in a time of peace under the emperor Alexander Severus, whose mother was a Christian, he may have been killed in a riot.

Within your will, O Lord, all things are established, and there is none that can resist your will. For you have made all things, the heaven and the earth, and all that is held within the circle of heaven; you are the Lord of all.

Almighty ever-living God, who in the abundance of your kindness surpass the merits and the desires of those who entreat you, pour out your mercy upon us to pardon what conscience dreads and to give what prayer does not dare to ask. First reading: Joel 4: 12-21
The Lord says this: “Let the nations rouse themselves, let them march to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for I am going to sit in judgement there on all the nations round. For the day of the Lord is near in the Valley of Decision! Sun and moon grow dark, the stars lose their brilliance. The Lord roars from Zion, makes his voice heard from Jerusalem; heaven and earth tremble. But the Lord will be a shelter for his people, a stronghold for the sons of Israel. “You will learn then that I am the Lord your God, dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain. Jerusalem will be a holy place, no alien will ever pass through it again.” When that day comes, the mountains will run with new wine and the hills flow with milk, and all the river beds of Judah will run with water. A fountain will spring from the house of the Lord to water the wadi of Acacias. Egypt will become a desolation, Edom a desert waste on account of the violence done to the sons of Judah whose innocent blood they shed in their country. But Judah will be inhabited for ever, Jerusalem from age to age. “I will avenge their blood and let none go unpunished”, and the Lord shall make his home in Zion.

Meditation
The woman who, in the midst of the crowd, proclaims Mary blessed because she gave birth to and nourished Jesus, restricts the scope of this beatitude happy… She makes it something small and transitory, granted to a single person. There is a certain envy in her cry. But God’s measure is good, packed, shaken, overflowing, and Jesus offers this woman and all of us eternal bliss. Those who hear the word of God and keep it are happy, for they are loved by God who comes to make his home in them. Didn’t Jesus say: “If anyone loves me, he will remain faithful to my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and dwell with him?”

SAINT Edouard, Le Confesseur
Dernier roi à régner sur l’Angleterre avant la conquête de ce pays par les Normands de Guillaume le Conquérant, il avait horreur du sang versé. Aussi éminent par sa piété que par sa générosité, il sut se faire l’ami des petites gens et fut vite l’objet d’un culte populaire. Mais, en réalité, il n’était pas fait pour être roi.
Antienne d’ouverture : Est 13, 9
Tout dépend de ta volonté, Seigneur, et rien ne peut lui résister : C’est toi qui as fait le ciel et la terre et les merveilles qu’ils contiennent. Tu es le Maître de l’univers.
Prière d’ouverture
Dans ton amour inépuisable, Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, tu combles ceux qui t’implorent, bien au-delà de leurs mérites et de leurs désirs. Répands sur nous ta miséricorde en délivrant notre conscience de ce qui l’inquiète et en donnant plus que nous n’osons demander. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Joël 1, 13-15 ; 2, 1-2
Prêtres, mettez un vêtement de deuil, et pleurez ! Serviteurs de l’autel, faites entendre des lamentations! Venez, serviteurs de mon Dieu, passez la nuit vêtus de toile à sac ! Car la maison de votre Dieu ne reçoit plus ni offrandes ni libations. Prescrivez un jeûne sacré, annoncez une fête solennelle, réunissez les anciens et tous les habitants du pays dans la maison du Seigneur votre Dieu. Évangile : Luc 11, 15-26
En ce temps-là, comme Jésus avait expulsé un démon, certains dirent: « C’est par Béelzéboul, le chef des démons, qu’il expulse les démons.» D’autres, pour le mettre à l’épreuve, cherchaient à obtenir de lui un signe venant du ciel. Jésus, connaissant leurs pensées, leur dit: « Tout royaume divisé contre lui-même devient désert, ses maisons s’écroulent les unes sur les autres. Si Satan, lui aussi, est divisé contre lui-même, comment son royaume tiendra-t-il ? Vous dites en effet que c’est par Béelzéboul que j’expulse les démons. Mais si c’est par Béelzéboul que moi, je les expulse, vos disciples, par qui les expulsent-ils ? Dès lors, ils seront eux-mêmes vos juges. En revanche, si c’est par le doigt de Dieu que j’expulse les démons, c’est donc que le règne de Dieu est venu jusqu’à vous. Quand l’homme fort, et bien armé, garde son palais, tout ce qui lui appartient est en sécurité. Mais si un plus fort survient et triomphe de lui, il lui enlève son armement auquel il se fiait, et il distribue tout ce dont il l’a dépouillé. Celui qui n’est pas avec moi est contre moi ; celui qui ne rassemble pas avec moi disperse. Quand l’esprit impur est sorti de l’homme, il parcourt des lieux arides en cherchant où se reposer. Et il ne trouve pas. Alors il se dit: “Je vais retourner dans ma maison, d’où je suis sorti.” En arrivant, il la trouve balayée et bien rangée. Alors il s’en va, et il prend d’autres esprits encore plus mauvais que lui, au nombre de sept ; ils entrent et s’y installent. Ainsi, l’état de cet homme-là est pire à la fin qu’au début. »

Accorde-nous, Seigneur notre Dieu, de trouver dans cette communion notre force et notre joie, afin que nous puissions devenir ce que nous avons reçu: le corps du Christ. Lui qui.
Méditation
Quand Jésus manifeste sa puissance et que parole et geste s’accordent, les esprits tordus refusent de voir ce qui est véritablement manifesté et se concentrent sur ce qui n’est pas. Ils attribuent à Satan les délivrances opérées par Jésus. Or attribuer au mal une guérison, une libération, est un pur non-sens. Il s’agit ici du combat entre Dieu et Satan, qui a pour terrain le cœur de l’homme. Jésus nous met en garde contre les « risques de rechute » : il ne suffit pas d’avoir bénéficié de la délivrance ou d’une grande grâce spirituelle pour se croire débarrassé des attaques du Malin… Si nous ne veillons pas à entretenir la flamme de notre foi en Jésus Sauveur par l’écoute de la Parole, la prière et la vie sacramentelle, ceci attirera toutes sortes de « démons » indésirables, à commencer par les pensées négatives. C’est pourquoi il nous faut pratiquer la vigilance du cœur jusqu’au bout, avec assiduité, comme nous dit Jésus.
