‘’Ignorer les Ecritures, c’est ignorer le Christ’’. Cette maxime de Jérôme (vers 340-420) est la clé de sa vie, toute consacrée à traduire et à commenter la Bible. Venu à Rome pour faire ses études, le jeune Dalmate s’y enthousiasme pour la vie de l’esprit.
Antienne d’ouverture : Dn 3, 31
Que les paroles de Dieu soient toujours sur tes lèvres ; médite-les jour et nuit, veille à les accomplir en tout ce qu’elles contiennent : alors ta vie prendra sens et valeur.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as donné à saint Jérôme de goûter la sainte Écriture et d’en vivre intensément, fais que ton peuple soit davantage nourri de ta Parole et trouve en elle une source de vie. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Za 8, 20-23
Ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers:Voici que, de nouveau, des peuples afflueront, des habitants de nombreuses villes. Les habitants d’une ville iront dans une autre ville et diront: « Allons apaiser la face du Seigneur, allons chercher le Seigneur de l’univers! Quant à moi, j’y vais. » Des peuples nombreux et des nations puissantes viendront à Jérusalem chercher le Seigneur de l’univers et apaiser sa face. Ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers : En ces jours-là, dix hommes de toute langue et de toute nation saisiront un Juif par son vêtement et lui diront : « Nous voulons aller avec vous, car nous avons appris que Dieu est avec vous. »
Psaume : 86 (87), 1-3, 4, 5, 6-7
R/ Dieu est avec nous.
Elle est fondée sur les montagnes saintes. Le Seigneur aime les portes de Sion plus que toutes les demeures de Jacob. Pour ta gloire on parle de toi, ville de Dieu !
« Je cite l’Égypte et Babylone entre celles qui me connaissent.» Voyez Tyr, la Philistie, l’Éthiopie : chacune est née là-bas.
Mais on appelle Sion : « Ma mère ! » car en elle, tout homme est né. C’est lui, le Très-Haut, qui la maintient.
Au registre des peuples, le Seigneur écrit : « Chacun est né là-bas.» Tous ensemble ils dansent, et ils chantent : « En toi, toutes nos sources ! »
Acclamation
Alléluia. Alléluia. Le Fils de l’homme est venu pour servir, et donner sa vie en rançon pour la multitude. Alléluia.
Évangile : Lc 9, 51-56
Comme s’accomplissait le temps où il allait être enlevé au ciel, Jésus, le visage déterminé, prit la route de Jérusalem. Il envoya, en avant de lui, des messagers; ceux-ci se mirent en route et entrèrent dans un village de Samaritains pour préparer sa venue. Mais on refusa de le recevoir, parce qu’il se dirigeait vers Jérusalem. Voyant cela, les disciples Jacques et Jean dirent: « Seigneur, veux-tu que nous ordonnions qu’un feu tombe du ciel et les détruise ? » Mais Jésus, se retournant, les réprimanda. Puis ils partirent pour un autre village.
Prière sur les offrandes
Permets, Seigneur notre Dieu, qu’après avoir accueilli ta Parole en nos cœurs, à l’exemple de saint Jérôme, nous mettions plus d’empressement à t’offrions le sacrifice du salut. Par Jésus.

Quand tes paroles se présentaient, Seigneur, je les dévorais. Ta Parole faisait mes délices et la joie de mon cœur.
Prière après la communion
Permets, Seigneur notre Dieu, que cette communion reçue en la fête de saint Jérôme réveille le cœur de tes fidèles : attentifs aux enseignements de l’Écriture, ils verront quel chemin il faut suivre ; en le suivant, ils parviendront à la vie éternelle. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Dieu est avec nous. Avons-nous une conscience aigue de cette présence de Dieu à nos côtés ? Jésus a le visage résolu parce qu’il est convaincu que Le Père est avec lui. A la différence des apôtres, il ne laisse pas les émotions prendre le dessus dans ces prises de décisions. Développons véritablement cette conscience de « Dieu est avec nous » afin que en voyant notre sérénité devant les situations difficiles, d’autres viennent s’accrocher à nous pour aller avec nous à Jésus.

He was born in Dalmatia. He founded a monastery, a hospice, and a school, and settled down to the most important work of his life, the translation of the Bible into Latin, a translation which, with some revisions, is still in use today. He died at Bethlehem.

Blessed indeed is he who ponders the law of the Lord day and night: he will yield his fruit in due season.
Collect
O God, who gave the Priest Saint Jerome a living and tender love for Sacred Scripture, grant that your people may be ever more fruitfully nourished by your Word and find in it the fount of life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Zechariah 8:20-23
The Lord of Hosts says this: ‘There will be other peoples yet, and citizens of great cities. And the inhabitants of one city will go to the next and say, “Come, let us go and entreat the favour of the Lord, and seek the Lord of Hosts; I am going myself.” And many peoples and great nations will come to seek the Lord of Hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favour of the Lord.’ The Lord of Hosts says this: ‘In those days, ten men of nations of every language will take a Jew by the sleeve and say, “We want to go with you, since we have learnt that God is with you.”’

Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, ‘Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to burn them up?’ But he turned and rebuked them, and they went off to another village.

Grant us, O Lord, that, having meditated on your Word, following the example of Saint Jerome, we may more eagerly draw near to offer your majesty the sacrifice of salvation. Through Christ our Lord.

Lord God, your words were found and I consumed them; your word became the joy and the happiness of my heart.
Prayer after Communion
May these holy gifts we have received, O Lord, as we rejoice in celebrating Saint Jerome, stir up the hearts of your faithful so that, attentive to sacred teachings, they may understand the path they are to follow and, by following it, obtain life everlasting. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
How swiftly I often react when things do not go the way I deem best! When someone else faces a public scandal, I cry out “Justice! Justice! And Justice quickly!” However, when it is me in the spotlight, I plead: “Mercy! Mercy on me, Lord!!” I am quick to complain and curse when someone utters a word that pulls me out of my comfort zone! I have often forgotten that ‘revenge belongs to Yahweh’. And cursing? I recall that in the Letter of Jude, even Archangel Michael refrained from cursing Lucifer during their dispute over the body of Moses. May God grant me a spirit of gratitude for every situation.

Prière d’ouverture
Dans ta sagesse admirable, Seigneur, tu assignes leurs fonctions aux anges et aux hommes; fais que nous soyons protégés sur cette terre par ceux qui dans le ciel servent toujours devant ta face. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : : Dn 7, 9-10.13-14
La nuit, au cours d’une vision, moi, Daniel, je regardais : des trônes furent disposés, et un Vieillard prit place ; son habit était blanc comme la neige, et les cheveux de sa tête, comme de la laine immaculée ; son trône était fait de flammes de feu, avec des roues de feu ardent. Un fleuve de feu coulait, qui jaillissait devant lui. Des milliers de milliers le servaient, des myriades de myriades se tenaient devant lui. Le tribunal prit place et l’on ouvrit des livres. Je regardais, au cours des visions de la nuit, et je voyais venir, avec les nuées du ciel, comme un Fils d’homme; il parvint jusqu’au Vieillard, et on le fit avancer devant lui. Et il lui fut donné domination, gloire et royauté ; tous les peuples, toutes les nations et les gens de toutes langues le servirent. Sa domination est une domination éternelle, qui ne passera pas, et sa royauté, une royauté qui ne sera pas détruite.

R/ Je chanterai le Seigneur, en présence des anges
De tout mon cœur, Seigneur, je te rends grâce : tu as entendu les paroles de ma bouche. Je te chante en présence des anges, vers ton temple sacré, je me prosterne.
Je rends grâce à ton nom pour ton amour et ta vérité, car tu élèves, au-dessus de tout, ton nom et ta parole. Le jour où tu répondis à mon appel, tu fis grandir en mon âme la force.
Tous les rois de la terre te rendent grâce quand ils entendent les paroles de ta bouche. Ils chantent les chemins du Seigneur : « Qu’elle est grande, la gloire du Seigneur ! »

Évangile : Jn 1, 47-51
En ce temps-là, lorsque Jésus vit Nathanaël venir à lui, il déclara à son sujet : « Voici vraiment un Israélite : il n’y a pas de ruse en lui.» Nathanaël lui demande : « D’où me connais-tu ? » Jésus lui répond: « Avant que Philippe t’appelle, quand tu étais sous le figuier, je t’ai vu. » Nathanaël lui dit : « Rabbi, c’est toi le Fils de Dieu ! C’est toi le roi d’Israël ! » Jésus reprend : « Je te dis que je t’ai vu sous le figuier, et c’est pour cela que tu crois ! Tu verras des choses plus grandes encore. » Et il ajoute : « Amen, amen, je vous le dis : vous verrez le ciel ouvert, et les anges de Dieu monter et descendre au-dessus du Fils de l’homme. »

Avec nos humbles prières, Seigneur, nous t’offrons le sacrifice d’action de grâce ; puisque les anges le portent en présence de ta gloire, daigne l’accueillir avec bonté, et fais qu’il nous obtienne le salut. Par Jésus.

Si vous ne changez pas, pour devenir comme les petits enfants, dit le Seigneur, vous n’entrerez pas dans le Royaume des cieux.
Prière après la communion
Déjà réconfortés par le pain du ciel, nous te supplions humblement, Seigneur : puissions-nous avec ces forces neuves, et sous la protection des anges, avancer d’un pas ferme dans la voie du salut. Par Jésus.
Méditation
La célébration des archanges nous invite à méditer sur trois aspects de notre vie. Primo, la place du nom. Tous les trois archanges ont un nom qui détermine leur fonction et leurs actions. Secundo, les archanges sont là pour mener certains combats pour nous. Dieu nous les donne comme allié dans le combat spirituel. Mais comment les invoquons-nous ? Tercio les archanges, sont des anges restés fidèles à Dieu. La finalité de leur mission est de transmettre message du salut de Dieu aux Hommes. Les écoutons-nous ?

Saint Michael is mentioned in the Apocalypse as the leader of the heavenly host; St Gabriel appears in Daniel and was also the bearer of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary. St Raphael in the Book of Tobit heals Tobit of his blindness. His name means God heals.

Bless the Lord, all you his angels, mighty in power, fulfilling his word, and heeding his voice.

O God, who dispose in marvellous order ministries both angelic and human, graciously grant that our life on earth may be defended by those who watch over us as they minister perpetually to you in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Daniel 7:9-10,13-14
As I watched: Thrones were set in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, the hair of his head as pure as wool. His throne was a blaze of flames, its wheels were a burning fire. A stream of fire poured out, issuing from his presence. Having been nourished with heavenly Bread, we beseech you humbly, O Lord, that, drawing from it new strength, under the faithful protection of your Angels, we may advance boldly along the way of salvation. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Indeed, the realisation that Jesus knows Nathanael is a profound opportunity for gratitude. Acknowledging that Jesus knows me and calls me by my name since the day I was baptised, and that I have a Guardian Angel, is a reason to thank God. My gratitude extends to God for my life, my Patron Saint, and my sisters and brothers. In this light, the Hymn: “Thank you for every new good morning” takes on a deeper and more meaningful significance for me.

He was born in Aquitaine and became a priest. He devoted his whole life to the service of the poor. He founded a congregation of priests for missionary work and with St Louise de Marillac, the Sisters of Charity.

All that you have done to us, O Lord, you have done with true judgement, for we have sinned against you and not obeyed your commandments. But give glory to your name and deal with us according to the bounty of your mercy.

O God, who manifest your almighty power above all by pardoning and showing mercy, bestow, we pray, your grace abundantly upon us, and make those hastening to attain your promises heirs to the treasures of heaven. First reading : Amos 6:1,4-7
The almighty Lord says this: Woe to those ensconced so snugly in Zion and to those who feel so safe on the mountain of Samaria, those famous men of this first of nations to whom the House of Israel goes as client. Lying on ivory beds and sprawling on their divans, they dine on lambs from the flock, and stall-fattened veal; they bawl to the sound of the harp, they invent new instruments of music like David, they drink wine by the bowlful, and use the finest oil for anointing themselves, but about the ruin of Joseph they do not care at all. That is why they will be the first to be exiled; the sprawlers’ revelry is over.

R/ My soul, give praise to the Lord.
It is the Lord who keeps faith for ever, who is just to those who are oppressed. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free.
It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who loves the just, the Lord, who protects the stranger.
The Lord upholds the widow and orphan but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion’s God, from age to age.
Second reading : 1 Timothy 6:11-16
As a man dedicated to God, you must aim to be saintly and religious, filled with faith and love, patient and gentle. Fight the good fight of the faith and win for yourself the eternal life to which you were called when you made your profession and spoke up for the truth in front of many witnesses. Now, before God the source of all life and before Christ, who spoke up as a witness for the truth in front of Pontius Pilate, I put to you the duty of doing all that you have been told, with no faults or failures, until the Appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who at the due time will be revealed by God, the blessed and only Ruler of all, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, who alone is immortal, whose home is in inaccessible light, whom no man has seen and no man is able to see: to him be honour and everlasting power. And at his gate there lay a poor man called Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to fill himself with the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Dogs even came and licked his sores. Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. ‘In his torment in Hades he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus in his bosom. So he cried out, “Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.” “My son,” Abraham replied “remember that during your life good things came your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted here while you are in agony. But that is not all: between us and you a great gulf has been fixed, to stop anyone, if he wanted to, crossing from our side to yours, and to stop any crossing from your side to ours.” ‘The rich man replied, “Father, I beg you then to send Lazarus to my father’s house, since I have five brothers, to give them warning so that they do not come to this place of torment too.” “They have Moses and the prophets,” said Abraham “let them listen to them.” “Ah no, father Abraham,” said the rich man “but if someone comes to them from the dead, they will repent.” Then Abraham said to him, “If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead.”’

Grant us, O merciful God, that this our offering may find acceptance with you and that through it the wellspring of all blessing may be laid open before us. Through Christ our Lord.

Remember your word to your servant, O Lord, by which you have given me hope. This is my comfort when I am brought low.
Prayer after Communion
May this heavenly mystery, O Lord, restore us in mind and body, that we may be coheirs in glory with Christ, to whose suffering we are united whenever we proclaim his Death. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
Good Jesus! I once heard that this Lazarus did not go to Heaven simply because he was poor on earth, or the rich man did not end up in Hell solely because of his wealth. It is a reminder that my earthly status, whether poor or rich, does not determine my eternal destination. Heavenly Father, daily remind me that You made me to know You, to love You, to serve You in my neighbour, and to find happiness with You in Heaven when my earthly journey ends.
