Saint John Chrysostom (349 – 407)
Psalter: Week III

He was born in Antioch. After a thorough education, he took up the ascetic life. He was ordained to the priesthood, and became a fruitful and effective preacher. The term Chrysostom meaning «golden-mouthed» was given because of his great eloquence.
Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Dn 12: 3
Those who are wise will shine brightly like the splendour of the firmament and those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars for ever.
Collect
O God, strength of those who hope in you, who willed that the Bishop Saint John Chrysostom should be illustrious by his wonderful eloquence and his experience of suffering, grant us, we pray, that, instructed by his teachings, we may be strengthened through the example of his invincible patience. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 1 Timothy 1:15-17
Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them; and if mercy has been shown to me, it is because Jesus Christ meant to make me the greatest evidence of his inexhaustible patience for all the other people who would later have to trust in him to come to eternal life. Meditation
“…the man who built his house on soil”! Now, I pause to reflect: In all the fervour about my Faith, whose name and image am I truly defending — Jesus’ or my own? When faced with disagreement concerning my preaching, do I become gloomy and lament the lack appreciation for my sacrifices in spreading the Good News? Similarly, If I do not receive gratitude after performing a generous act, do I consider giving up on doing good for others? Lord Jesus, remind me that it is only your name that I should be defending in all my thoughts, actions, and words. Amen.

Mais il y avait aussi de nombreux martyrs qui donnèrent le témoignage de leur vie. Tel fut le cas, en 1622, des bienheureux martyrs Apollinaire Franco, franciscain, Thomas Zumarraga, dominicain, tous deux prêtres, et quatre compagnons qui furent jetés en prison et brûlés vifs.

Qu’as-tu à regarder la paille dans l’œil de ton frère, alors que la poutre qui est dans ton œil à toi, tu ne la remarques pas ? Comment peux-tu dire à ton frère: “Frère, laisse-moi enlever la paille qui est dans ton œil”, alors que toi-même ne vois pas la poutre qui est dans le tien ? Hypocrite ! Vers une Vision Claire
Le véritable but de la vie chrétienne est de vivre et de donner le Christ, en orientant les gens vers Lui en enseignant la Parole de Dieu et en en témoignant. Pour beaucoup d’entre nous aujourd’hui, la simple pensée d’une poutre dans notre œil est préposée ! Nous sommes devenus des experts inspecteurs des yeux, cherchant des bûches dans les yeux des autres alors que nous avons toute une forêt dans les nôtres ! Cependant, nous devons devenir des inspecteurs de «moi» et identifier qui nous sommes, pour diagnostiquer les poutres qui nous empêchent de voir Jésus. Faisons une chirurgie du «moi» et enlevons les poutres de nos propres yeux. Un véritable disciple du Christ est celui qui reconnaît ses péchés et va vers Jésus en repentance.

How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,” when you cannot see the plank in your own? Hypocrite! Take the plank out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter that is in your brother’s eye.’

Jesus advises that I remove the plank from my ‘own eye first,’ and I rejoice to realise that I can begin this process by adopting Pope Francis’ ‘Five Finger Prayer arrangement’: starting with the thumb (praying for those closest to me, family and friends), index finger (for those who teach, instruct, and heal me, such as my teachers, doctors, and priests); middle finger (for authority figures and those in government); ring finger (for the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, and the poor), and finally the pinkie (praying for myself).

Méditation:
Imiter Dieu Au cœur de l’enseignement de Jésus se trouve la préparation à aimer nos ennemis et à montrer de la gentillesse à ceux qui ne sont pas en mesure de nous rembourser. Dans le cours ordinaire des choses, si nous essayons d’être généreux, nous attendons au moins un peu de gratitude. Donner aux autres les met en dette envers vous. Nous avons du mal à être complètement désintéressés dans notre don. On nous demande plus que de simplement donner en vue de recevoir. Idéalement, l’amour n’a rien d’égoïste, tout comme Dieu nous aime. Dieu est bon même envers les ingrats et les méchants. Jésus dit que nous pouvons être semblables à Dieu dans notre amour et dans nos dons. Il promet que si nous donnons de cette manière divine, nous serons abondamment bénis. Une pleine mesure de récompense sera versée dans notre giron. Nous sommes invités, dans les mots de la première lecture, à laisser cette parole du Christ, dans toute sa richesse, trouver une demeure en nous.

In 1615, he became a member of the Order of Saint Benedict and was ordained as a priest in 1617. He was arrested several times during his travels before he eventually suffered a martyr’s death in 1671.

Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand. But when Christ is revealed – and he is your life – you too will be revealed in all your glory with him. That is why you must kill everything in you that belongs only to earthly life: fornication, impurity, guilty passion, evil desires and especially greed, which is the same thing as worshipping a false god; all this is the sort of behaviour that makes God angry. And it is the way in which you used to live when you were surrounded by people doing the same thing, but now you, of all people, must give all these things up: getting angry, being bad-tempered, spitefulness, abusive language and dirty talk; and never tell each other lies. You have stripped off your old behaviour with your old self, and you have put on a new self which will progress towards true knowledge the more it is renewed in the image of its creator; and in that image there is no room for distinction between Greek and Jew, between the circumcised or the uncircumcised, or between barbarian and Scythian, slave and free man. There is only Christ: he is everything and he is in everything.

“Getting angry, being bad-tempered…” Paul identifies these as ‘two brother evils’ among other sins. I remember hearing someone assert about anger: “Anger can be rejected! I will not choose anger when I am accused in my innocence; I will not choose anger either when my wrongdoing is exposed.”
