All Saints – Solemnity
All Saints Day is the day on which Catholics celebrate all the saints, known and unknown. All Saints Day beckons us to something beautiful: It reminds us of our great potential—the promise that lies within each of us. The promise of holiness.
Entrance Antiphon
Let us all rejoice in the Lord, as we celebrate the feast day in honour of all the Saints, at whose festival the Angels rejoice and praise the Son of God.
Collect
Almighty ever-living God, by whose gift we venerate in one celebration, the merits of all the Saints, bestow on us, we pray, through the prayers of so many intercessors, an abundance of the reconciliation with you for which we earnestly long. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First Reading: Apocalypse 7:2-4. 9-14
I, John, saw another angel rising where the sun rises, carrying the seal of the living God; he called in a powerful voice to the four angels whose duty was to devastate land and sea, “Wait before you do any damage on land or at sea or to the trees, until we have put the seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.” Then I heard how many were sealed: a hundred and forty-four thousand, out of all the tribes of Israel. After that I saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, tribe and language; they were standing in front of the throne and in front of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palms in their hands. R/ Such are the men who seek your face, O Lord.
The Lord’s is the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples. It is he who set it on the seas; on the waters he made it firm.

Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-3
Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us, by letting us be called God’s children; and that is what we are. Because the world refused to acknowledge him, therefore it does not acknowledge us. My dear people, we are already the children of God but what we are to be in the future has not yet been revealed; all we know is, that when it is revealed we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is. Surely everyone who entertains this hope must purify himself, must try to be as pure as Christ.

Prayer over the Offerings
May these offerings we bring in honour of all the Saints be pleasing to you, O Lord, and grant that, just as we believe the Saints to be already assured of immortality, so we may experience their concern for our salvation. Through Christ our Lord.

Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

As we adore you, O God, who alone are holy and wonderful in all your Saints, we implore your grace, so that, coming to perfect holiness in the fullness of your love, we may pass from this pilgrim table to the banquet of our heavenly homeland. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Today’s Gospel (on the Beatitudes) introduces us formidably into the Month of the Dead and invites us to enter the Kingdom of Heaven by taking care of our social and moral life and by enroling in the school of holiness. In fact, the blessings we seek are for everyone according to our different states in life and the different situations in which we await the Lord; the meek, the poor in heart, the afflicted, the hungry or thirsty for justice, the merciful, etc.

SAINT Quentin
Au 3e siècle, Quentin, romain, partit pour la Gaule avec saint Lucien de Beauvais et plusieurs compagnons pour évangéliser cette région du Beauvaisis et de la Picardie. Son succès provoqua la colère du préfet romain Rictiovare qui l’arrêta à Soissons, lui fit subir interrogatoires et supplices, le fit décapiter.

1ère lecture : Romains 8, 18-25
Frères, j’estime qu’il n’y a pas de commune mesure entre les souffrances du temps présent et la gloire qui va être révélée pour nous. En effet, la création attend avec impatience la révélation des fils de Dieu. Car la création a été soumise au pouvoir du néant, non pas de son plein gré, mais à cause de celui qui l’a livrée à ce pouvoir. Pourtant, elle a gardé l’espérance d’être, elle aussi, libérée de l’esclavage de la dégradation, pour connaître la liberté de la gloire donnée aux enfants de Dieu. Nous le savons bien, la création tout entière gémit, elle passe par les douleurs d’un enfantement qui dure encore. Et elle n’est pas seule. Nous aussi, en nous-mêmes, nous gémissons ; nous avons commencé à recevoir l’Esprit Saint, mais nous attendons notre adoption et la rédemption de notre corps. Car nous avons été sauvés, mais c’est en espérance ; voir ce qu’on espère, ce n’est plus espérer : ce que l’on voit, comment peut-on l’espérer encore ? Mais nous, qui espérons ce que nous ne voyons pas, nous l’attendons avec persévérance.

R/ Quelles merveilles le Seigneur fit pour nous !
Quand le Seigneur ramena les captifs à Sion, nous étions comme en rêve ! Alors notre bouche était pleine de rires, nous poussions des cris de joie.
Alors on disait parmi les nations: « Quelles merveilles fait pour eux le Seigneur ! » Quelles merveilles le Seigneur fit pour nous : nous étions en grande fête !

Elle a poussé, elle est devenue un arbre, et les oiseaux du ciel ont fait leur nid dans ses branches. » Il dit encore : « À quoi pourrai-je comparer le règne de Dieu ? Méditation
Le grain de sénevé est tout petit, il est même presqu’insignifiant. D’ailleurs, on ne le sème pas, mais on le « jette » dans un jardin. Le levain, quant à lui, est tout simplement enfoui ! Et voilà les deux images que Jésus emploie pour parler du Royaume de Dieu, pas moins ! Le grain de sénevé est un arbre en puissance et le levain, comme son nom l’indique, peut faire lever toute la pâte ! Sans doute Jésus veut-il nous faire comprendre que rien n’est insignifiant pour notre Dieu. Il peut tout : d’une graine il peut faire un arbre, il donne sens et fécondité à ce qui, dans nos vies, semble tellement petit ou dérisoire. C’est dans notre faiblesse que se déploie sa puissance mais il a besoin que nous lui offrions ces petits riens qui transforment le monde.

I think that what we suffer in this life can never be compared to the glory, as yet unrevealed, which is waiting for us. The whole creation is eagerly waiting for God to reveal his sons. It was not for any fault on the part of creation that it was made unable to attain its purpose, it was made so by God; but creation still retains the hope of being freed, like us, from its slavery to decadence, to enjoy the same freedom and glory as the children of God. From the beginning till now the entire creation, as we know, has been groaning in one great act of giving birth; and not only creation, but all of us who possess the first-fruits of the Spirit, we too groan inwardly as we wait for our bodies to be set free. For we must be content to hope that we shall be saved – our salvation is not in sight, we should not have to be hoping for it if it were – but, as I say, we must hope to be saved since we are not saved yet – it is something we must wait for with patience.

Meditation
A mustard seed is very small, even insignificant. In fact, it is not sown but thrown into a garden. Leaven, on the other hand, is simply buried! And these are the two images that Jesus uses to talk about the Kingdom of God, no less! But it’s true that the mustard seed is a potential tree, and that leaven, as its name indicates, can make the whole dough rise! No doubt, Jesus wants us to understand that nothing is insignificant for our God. He can do anything: from a seed, he can make a tree; he gives meaning and fruitfulness to what, in our lives, seems so small or derisory. It is in our weakness that his power unfolds, but he needs us to offer him these small things that transform the world.

SAINT Marcellus
A centurion from Tingis (Morocco), he not only refused to worship Roman gods but also threw down his soldier’s insignia in front of the legion’s standards. As he did this, he proclaimed his Christian identity, his allegiance to the Lord and rejected the worship of gods made of stone and wood. He was put to death by the sword around the year 300.

One Sabbath day Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who for eighteen years had been possessed by a spirit that left her enfeebled; she was bent double and quite unable to stand upright. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are rid of your infirmity.” And he laid his hands on her. And at once she straightened up, and she glorified God. But the synagogue official was indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, and he addressed the people present. “There are six days,” he said, “when work is to be done. Come and be healed on one of those days and not on the Sabbath.” But the Lord answered him. “Hypocrites!” he said “Is there one of you who does not untie his ox or his donkey from the manger on the Sabbath and take it out for watering? And this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has held bound these eighteen years – was it not right to untie her bonds on the Sabbath day?” When he said this, all his adversaries were covered with confusion, and all the people were overjoyed at all the wonders he worked.

Meditation
Jesus saw the bent woman and immediately understood her suffering. He healed her without asking her permission. She immediately realised that Jesus had delivered her from her illness and gave thanks to God. What a beautiful, simple miracle, like the exchange of a look of love and trust. The ruler of the synagogue intervenes in this gentleness with great noise: he addresses the crowd to get over his bad temper, and speaks to them like a bad master to his servants. He pretends to be defending the rights of God but has not the slightest movement of compassion for this woman who has been crippled for eighteen years. It is Jesus’ turn to be indignant at this false judgement, which prefers order to love. This should be a lesson to us; the respect for human life, human dignity and the well-being of our neighbour are above every law. Let us strive for what makes man whole.

En effet, tous ceux qui se laissent conduire par l’Esprit de Dieu, ceux-là sont fils de Dieu. Vous n’avez pas reçu un esprit qui fait de vous des esclaves et vous ramène à la peur ; mais vous avez reçu un Esprit qui fait de vous des fils ; et c’est en lui que nous crions « Abba ! », c’est-à-dire : Père ! C’est donc l’Esprit Saint lui-même qui atteste à notre esprit que nous sommes enfants de Dieu. Puisque nous sommes ses enfants, nous sommes aussi ses héritiers : héritiers de Dieu, héritiers avec le Christ, si du moins nous souffrons avec lui pour être avec lui dans la gloire.

Voici qu’il y avait là une femme, possédée par un esprit qui la rendait infirme depuis dix-huit ans ; elle était toute courbée et absolument incapable de se redresser. Quand Jésus la vit, il l’interpella et lui dit : « Femme, te voici délivrée de ton infirmité. » Et il lui imposa les mains. À l’instant même elle redevint droite et rendait gloire à Dieu. Alors le chef de la synagogue, indigné de voir Jésus faire une guérison le jour du sabbat, prit la parole et dit à la foule : « Il y a six jours pour travailler; venez donc vous faire guérir ces jours-là, et non pas le jour du sabbat. » Le Seigneur lui répliqua: « Hypocrites! Chacun de vous, le jour du sabbat, ne détache-t-il pas de la mangeoire son bœuf ou son âne pour le mener boire? Alors cette femme, une fille d’Abraham, que Satan avait liée voici dix-huit ans, ne fallait-il pas la délivrer de ce lien le jour du sabbat ? » À ces paroles de Jésus, tous ses adversaires furent remplis de honte, et toute la foule était dans la joie à cause de toutes les actions éclatantes qu’il faisait.

Jésus a vu la femme courbée et a aussitôt compris sa souffrance. Il la guérit sans lui en demander la permission. Elle comprend tout de suite que Jésus l’a délivrée de son mal et rend grâce à Dieu. Quel beau miracle, tout simple, comme l’échange d’un regard d’amour et de confiance. Le chef de la synagogue vient intervenir dans cette douceur avec de grand bruit : il s’adresse à la foule pour passer sa mauvaise humeur, et lui parle comme le fait un mauvais maître à ses valets. Il se donne l’air de défendre les droits de Dieu mais n’a pas le moindre mouvement de compassion pour cette femme infirme depuis dix-huit ans. C’est au tour de Jésus d’être indigné par ce faux jugement, qui préfère l’ordre à l’amour. Quelle bonne nouvelle ! Jésus ne planifie pas sa grâce pour nous, il nous la donne en abondance.

Frères, vous savez comment nous nous sommes comportés chez vous pour votre bien. Et vous-mêmes, en fait, vous nous avez imités, nous et le Seigneur, en accueillant la Parole au milieu de bien des épreuves, avec la joie de l’Esprit Saint. Ainsi vous êtes devenus un modèle pour tous les croyants de Macédoine et de Grèce. Et ce n’est pas seulement en Macédoine et en Grèce qu’à partir de chez vous la parole du Seigneur a retenti, mais la nouvelle de votre foi en Dieu s’est si bien répandue partout que nous n’avons pas besoin d’en parler. En effet, les gens racontent, à notre sujet, l’accueil que nous avons reçu chez vous ; ils disent comment vous vous êtes convertis à Dieu en vous détournant des idoles, afin de servir le Dieu vivant et véritable, et afin d’attendre des cieux son Fils qu’il a ressuscité d’entre les morts, Jésus, qui nous délivre de la colère qui vient.

Évangile : Mt 22, 34-40
En ce temps-là, les pharisiens, apprenant que Jésus avait fermé la bouche aux sadducéens, se réunirent, et l’un d’entre eux, un docteur de la Loi, posa une question à Jésus pour le mettre à l’épreuve: « Maître, dans la Loi, quel est le grand commandement ? » Jésus lui répondit : « Tu aimeras le Seigneur ton Dieu de tout ton cœur, de toute ton âme et de tout ton esprit. Voilà le grand, le premier commandement. Et le second lui est semblable: Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même. De ces deux commandements dépend toute la Loi, ainsi que les Prophètes. »

Méditation
Qu’est-ce que l’Amour, Comment aimer ? Ces questions portent en elles, nous le sentons, la clé de la vraie vie à laquelle nous aspirons. C’est parce que le Christ a « les paroles de la vie éternelle », parce qu’il est venu pour que les hommes aient la vie en abondance, en donnant sa vie pour nous, qu’il est le seul à pouvoir nous révéler la vérité tout entière sur l’Amour. Il le fait par sa Parole que Paul nous invite à accueillir, c’est-à-dire à méditer et surtout à croire, « avec joie de l’Esprit Saint » ; et par son exemple vivant, que le même Paul nous exhorte à imiter. Ce n’est donc qu’en le contemplant, dans la prière et la rencontre dans les sacrements, que nous comprendrons pas à pas ce que veut dire : aimer Dieu par-dessus tout et son prochain comme soi-même, et que nous pourrons vivre ce double et unique commandement qui nous ouvre la vie éternelle, ici-bas déjà.

Second reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:5-10
You observed the sort of life we lived when we were with you, which was for your instruction, and you were led to become imitators of us, and of the Lord; and it was with the joy of the Holy Spirit that you took to the gospel, in spite of the great opposition all round you. This has made you the great example to all believers in Macedonia and Achaia since it was from you that the word of the Lord started to spread – and not only throughout Macedonia and Achaia, for the news of your faith in God has spread everywhere. We do not need to tell other people about it: other people tell us how we started the work among you, how you broke with idolatry when you were converted to God and became servants of the real, living God; and how you are now waiting for Jesus, his Son, whom he raised from the dead, to come from heaven to save us from the retribution which is coming.

Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, “Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?” Jesus said, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.”

Meditation
What is love? How are we to love? We feel that these questions hold the key to the true life to which we aspire. It is because Christ has the words of eternal life; because he came so that people might have life in abundance by giving his life for us, that he alone can reveal to us the whole truth about Love. We learn of this truth through his Word which Paul invites us to accept, that is, to meditate on and above all to believe, with the joy of the Holy Spirit; and through his living example, which the same Paul exhorts us to imitate. It is only by contemplating him, through prayer and encounter in the sacraments, that we will understand, step by step, what it means to love God above all else and our neighbour as ourselves, and that we will be able to live this twofold and unique commandment of love. It is a commandment that opens up eternal life to us, even while we are still here on earth.

SAINTS Simon et Jude, Apôtres
Fete
Le surnom de zélote, donné à Simon, indique dans quel parti l’appel de Jésus a été le chercher : il était l’un de ces violents qui voulaient rétablir le royaume d’Israël en soulevant le peuple de Dieu contre les occupants païens. Devenu l’un des Douze, il apprendra de son Maître les chemins de l’humble douceur qui mènent par la croix au Royaume de Dieu. La violence du zélote fera place à la force du témoin du Christ crucifié.

Dans un amour sans repentir, le Seigneur a choisi pour apôtres saint Simon et saint Jude et il leur a donné une gloire éternelle.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui nous as conduits à la connaissance de ton nom par la prédication des Apôtres, fais qu’à la prière des saints Simon et Jude, ton Église ne cesse de grandir en accueillant toujours de nouveaux croyants. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Ep 2, 19-22
Frères, vous n’êtes plus des étrangers ni des gens de passage, vous êtes concitoyens des saints, vous êtes membres de la famille de Dieu, car vous avez été intégrés dans la construction qui a pour fondations les Apôtres et les prophètes ; et la pierre angulaire, c’est le Christ Jésus lui-même. En lui, toute la construction s’élève harmonieusement pour devenir un temple saint dans le Seigneur. En lui, vous êtes, vous aussi, les éléments d’une même construction pour devenir une demeure de Dieu par l’Esprit Saint.
Psaume : 18 (19), 2-3, 4-5ab
R/ Par toute la terre s’en va leur message.
Les cieux proclament la gloire de Dieu, le firmament raconte l’ouvrage de ses mains. Le jour au jour en livre le récit et la nuit à la nuit en donne connaissance.
Pas de paroles dans ce récit, pas de voix qui s’entende ; mais sur toute la terre en paraît le message et la nouvelle, aux limites du monde.

Évangile : Lc 6, 12-19
En ces jours-là, Jésus s’en alla dans la montagne pour prier, et il passa toute la nuit à prier Dieu Le jour venu, il appela ses disciples et en choisit douze auxquels il donna le nom d’Apôtres : Simon, auquel il donna le nom de Pierre, André son frère, Jacques, Jean, Philippe, Barthélemy, Matthieu, Thomas, Jacques fils d’Alphée, Simon appelé le Zélote, Jude fils de Jacques, et Judas Iscariote, qui devint un traître. Jésus descendit de la montagne avec eux et s’arrêta sur un terrain plat. Il y avait là un grand nombre de ses disciples et une grande multitude de gens venus de toute la Judée, de Jérusalem, et du littoral de Tyr et de Sidon. Ils étaient venus l’entendre et se faire guérir de leurs maladies ; ceux qui étaient tourmentés par des esprits impurs retrouvaient la santé. Et toute la foule cherchait à le toucher, parce qu’une force sortait de lui et les guérissait tous.

En vénérant la gloire éternelle des Apôtres Simon et Jude nous te supplions, Seigneur : accueille nos prières, fais-nous participer dignement à cette eucharistie. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Jésus choisit douze apôtres parmi les disciples. Son choix, il le mûrit dans la prière. Une nuit passée à l’écoute de la voix du Père et du murmure de l’Esprit saint. Peut-être, sans cette nuit de prière, aurait-il appelé d’autres disciples que ceux-ci : des hommes plus instruits, plus fidèles… Mais là, pas d’entretien d’embauche, pas de test. Simplement la ratification d’un choix posé dans une parfaite confiance au Père qui jamais ne se trompe en ses desseins. Du choix de la marque de notre alimentation, au choix de notre tenue ou de notre métier, nous prenons sans cesse des décisions, petites ou grandes. Il nous faut bien sûr réfléchir, évaluer les conséquences prévisibles de nos actes. Plus encore, il nous est bon de nous rendre disponible aux signes que Dieu nous donne pour éclairer nos routes et nos carrefours.

SAINTS SIMON AND Jude, Apostle
Feast
Jude, also called Thaddaeus, is the apostle who at the Last Supper asked the Lord why he showed himself only to the disciples and not to the world. For many centuries he was scarcely venerated because people confused him with Judas Iscariot. He is the patron saint of lost and desperate causes.
Entrance Antiphon
These are the holy men whom the Lord chose in his own perfect love; to them he gave eternal glory.
Collect
O God, who by the blessed Apostles have brought us to acknowledge your name, graciously grant, through the intercession of Saints Simon and Jude, that the Church may constantly grow by increase of the peoples who believe in you. First reading: Ephesians 2:19-22
You are no longer aliens or foreign visitors: you are citizens like all the saints, and part of God’s household. Having received this Sacrament, O Lord, we humbly implore you in the Holy Spirit, that what we do to honour the glorious passion of the Apostles Simon and Jude may keep us ever in your love. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Jesus chooses twelve apostles from among the disciples. He matured his choice in prayer; a night spent listening to the voice of the Father and the whisper of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps, without this night of prayer, he would have called other disciples than these: men who were better educated, more faithful… But there was no job interview, no test. Simply the ratification of a choice made in perfect trust in the Father who is never mistaken in his plans. From choosing the brand of food we eat, to choosing our clothes or our job, we are constantly making decisions, big or small. Of course, we need to reflect, to evaluate the foreseeable consequences of our actions. But even more than that, it is good for us to make ourselves available to the signs that God gives us to light up our roads and crossroads.

SAINT Evariste, Pape et Martyr
Juif originaire de Bethléem, il se convertit au christianisme. Il organisa les paroisses de Rome et le service diaconal dans cette ville. Il vivait à l’époque où saint Ignace d’Antioche vint à Rome consommer son martyre.

1ère lecture : Romains 7, 18-25a
Frères, je sais que le bien n’habite pas en moi, c’est-à-dire dans l’être de chair que je suis. En effet, ce qui est à ma portée, c’est de vouloir le bien, mais pas de l’accomplir. Je ne fais pas le bien que je voudrais, mais je commets le mal que je ne voudrais pas. Si je fais le mal que je ne voudrais pas, alors ce n’est plus moi qui agis ainsi, mais c’est le péché, lui qui habite en moi. Moi qui voudrais faire le bien, je constate donc, en moi, cette loi : ce qui est à ma portée, c’est le mal. Au plus profond de moi-même, je prends plaisir à la loi de Dieu. Mais, dans les membres de mon corps, je découvre une autre loi, qui combat contre la loi que suit ma raison et me rend prisonnier de la loi du péché présente dans mon corps. Malheureux homme que je suis ! Qui donc me délivrera de ce corps qui m’entraîne à la mort? Mais grâce soit rendue à Dieu par Jésus Christ notre Seigneur !

R/ Seigneur, apprends- moi tes commandements.
Apprends-moi à bien saisir, à bien juger : je me fie à tes volontés. Toi, tu es bon, tu fais du bien : apprends-moi tes commandements.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait aux foules : « Quand vous voyez un nuage monter au couchant, vous dites aussitôt qu’il va pleuvoir, et c’est ce qui arrive. Et quand vous voyez souffler le vent du sud, vous dites qu’il fera une chaleur torride, et cela arrive. Hypocrites ! Vous savez interpréter l’aspect de la terre et du ciel ; mais ce moment-ci, pourquoi ne savez-vous pas l’interpréter ? Et pourquoi aussi ne jugez-vous pas par vous-mêmes ce qui est juste? Ainsi, quand tu vas avec ton adversaire devant le magistrat, pendant que tu es en chemin mets tout en œuvre pour t’arranger avec lui, afin d’éviter qu’il ne te traîne devant le juge, que le juge ne te livre à l’huissier, et que l’huissier ne te jette en prison. Je te le dis : tu n’en sortiras pas avant d’avoir payé jusqu’au dernier centime. »

Accorde-nous, Seigneur, de te servir à cet autel en toute liberté d’esprit. Ainsi ta grâce pourra nous purifier dans le mystère que nous célébrons. Par Jésus.

Le Seigneur veille sur ceux qui le craignent, sur ceux qui espèrent son amour, pour les préserver de la mort, les garder en vie aux jours de famine.
Prière après la communion
Seigneur, fais-nous trouver des forces neuves dans cette communion aux réalités du ciel. Assure-nous tes bienfaits ici-bas et instruis-nous des richesses de ton Royaume. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Jésus nous fait prendre conscience que Dieu est avec nous dans le présent, il est donc urgent de ne pas reporter la réconciliation à un temps incertain et improbable. Précisément, la remarque de Jésus est plus que jamais d’actualité. En effet, si nous avons une aptitude sans précédent à analyser et comprendre les faits de notre monde, nous avons souvent beaucoup de mal à comprendre ce que Dieu veut nous dire. Or, autant aujourd’hui qu’hier, le Seigneur nous parle. Plus nous serons ouverts et disponibles à ce qu’il veut nous dire, mieux nous saurons discerner les signes des temps.
