BLESSED PETER SNOW AND RALPH GRIMSTON
Peter Snow a priest in Soissons, France and Ralph Grimston, his friend (a layman) where key figures in the English mission (1598). Both suffered dead for preaching the gospel. They were beatified in 1987.

Even today, whenever Moses is read, the veil is over their minds. It will not be removed until they turn to the Lord. Now this Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, with our unveiled faces reflecting like mirrors the brightness of the Lord, all grow brighter and brighter as we are turned into the image that we reflect; this is the work of the Lord who is Spirit. Since we have by an act of mercy been entrusted with this work of administration, there is no weakening on our part. If our gospel does not penetrate the veil, then the veil is on those who are not on the way to salvation; the unbelievers whose minds the god of this world has blinded, to stop them seeing the light shed by the Good News of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. Meditation
Brotherly love goes beyond purely external manifestation. It is not enough to respect human life; it is also necessary to create a fraternal climate in which this life can flourish. If Jesus takes issue with the Pharisees and scribes, it is because their righteousness was only apparent. They kept many rules, prayed and worshipped God. They fasted, read the word of God and attended religious services. However, they had substituted outward actions for inward good habits. But then, the righteousness that God demands of the believer requires much more: the heart and mind, in addition to outward actions, must conform to God’s will. This is the debt of love that we must pay to all. Lord, please clothe us with your own righteousness and we will be able to present our offering at your altar in all sincerity.

1ère lecture : 2 Cor 3, 4-11
Frères, si nous avons une telle confiance en Dieu par le Christ, ce n’est pas à cause d’une capacité personnelle que nous pourrions nous attribuer : notre capacité vient de Dieu. Lui nous a rendus capables d’être les ministres d’une Alliance nouvelle, fondée non pas sur la lettre mais dans l’Esprit ; car la lettre tue, mais l’Esprit donne la vie. Le ministère de la mort, celui de la Loi gravée en lettres sur des pierres, avait déjà une telle gloire que les fils d’Israël ne pouvaient pas fixer le visage de Moïse à cause de la gloire, pourtant passagère, qui rayonnait de son visage. Combien plus grande alors sera la gloire du ministère de l’Esprit! Le ministère qui entraînait la condamnation, celui de la Loi, était déjà rayonnant de gloire; combien plus grande sera la gloire du ministère qui fait de nous des justes ! Non, vraiment, ce qui, dans une certaine mesure, a été glorieux ne l’est plus, parce qu’il y a maintenant une gloire incomparable. Si, en effet, ce qui était passager a connu un moment de gloire, combien plus ce qui demeure restera- t-il dans la gloire !

Amen, je vous le dis : Avant que le ciel et la terre disparaissent, pas un seul iota, pas un seul trait ne disparaîtra de la Loi jusqu’à ce que tout se réalise. Donc, celui qui rejettera un seul de ces plus petits commandements, et qui enseignera aux hommes à faire ainsi, sera déclaré le plus petit dans le royaume des Cieux. Méditation
Comme Abraham, nous avons reçu une mission de Dieu. Il arrive parfois qu’elle annonce la croix, comme celle qui lui demande l’enfant de la promesse ; et tout semble dès lors abolir les assurances que Dieu nous avait données. Nous vivons ces passages imprévus, personnellement ou communautairement, comme des moments d’échec, comme des impasses où même l’espérance semble vaine. Aujourd’hui n’oublions pas que sur ce chemin même de la croix, Jésus est en train d’accomplir sa promesse envers nous.

SAINT Antoine de Padoue,
Prêtre et Docteur de l’Eglise
Né à Lisbonne, Fernand fut d’abord chanoine régulier à Coïmbre. Il prit le nom d’Antoine quand il entra chez les Franciscains. D’abord retiré dans la solitude, il se voua ensuite à la prédication. Grâce à ses dons d’orateur et à la connaissance de l’Ecriture, son ministère fut fécond et justifie son titre de ‘’docteur évangélique’’.

Les sages brilleront comme la splendeur du firmament, et ceux qui sont des maîtres de justice pour la multitude resplendiront comme des étoiles, dans les siècles des siècles.

Nous sommes sel et lumière proclamés par Jésus lui-même. Sel, parce que nous sommes porteurs de l’Evangile de Jésus, et que seule cette bonne nouvelle peut donner à l’existence des hommes son vrai goût. Déjà l’Evangile a pénétré notre vie et nous avons laissé travailler en nous-mêmes l’Esprit du Seigneur. Nous sommes lumière depuis notre baptême et ayant reçu le sceau de l’Esprit et l’engagement de notre vie, nous sommes des disciples de Jésus aux yeux de tous. Nous ne pouvons plus nous cacher comme une ville située sur le haut d’une montagne. Nous ne pouvons renoncer à être lumière pas plus qu’une lampe que l’on vient d’allumer et que l’on a placée sur le lampadaire pour qu’elle éclaire tous ceux qui sont dans la maison.

SAINT ANTONY OF PADUA
Saint Antony was first of all an Augustinian monk, and later a Franciscan. Illness prevented him going to Africa to preach. His sermons are full of gentleness, but he reproved the wicked with fearless severity – especially backsliding clergy and the oppressors of the weak.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

Meditation
We are salt and light proclaimed by Jesus himself. Salt, because we are bearers of the Gospel of Jesus, and only this Good News can give to the existence of men its true taste. The Gospel has already penetrated our lives and we have let the Spirit of the Lord work in us. We are light by virtue of our baptism. And having received the seal of the Spirit and the commitment of our life, we are disciples of Jesus in the eyes of all. We can no longer hide just like a city on a mountain top. We cannot give up being light anymore than a lamp that has just been lit and placed on the lampstand to light up all those in the house.

A vous, la grâce et la paix de la part de Dieu notre Père et du Seigneur Jésus Christ. Béni soit Dieu, le Père de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ, le Père plein de tendresse, le Dieu de qui vient tout réconfort. Dans toutes nos détresses, il nous réconforte; ainsi, nous pouvons réconforter tous ceux qui sont dans la détresse, grâce au réconfort que nous recevons nous-mêmes de Dieu. Le Seigneur Jésus-Christ ne dit pas : « vous qui êtes pauvres et misérables, restez-y » ; il n’est pas question pour lui de freiner la promotion humaine et le progrès social, mais il s’adresse à tous les hommes, ceux qui ont de quoi vivre et ceux qui n’ont rien, et il leur dit : « Gardez un cœur de pauvre », devant les hommes vos frères et devant Dieu. Car en tout homme Dieu ne voit qu’un fils, qui a besoin d’être aimé, pardonné et sauvé. La haine parasite de plus en plus le cœur du chrétien dans son désir évangélique de justice et de liberté. Que Dieu nous aide à entrer dans la nouvelle création libéré de tout mal.

Meditation
The first beatitude of Jesus is addressed to all those whose hearts are poor enough to be small before God, whose hands are open to receive strength and hope from him alone. The Lord Jesus Christ does not say: “You who are poor and miserable, stay there”; it is not a question for him of slowing down human promotion and social progress, but he addresses all men, those who have enough to live on and those who have nothing, and he says to them: “Keep a poor heart” before your brothers and sisters and before God. For in every man, God sees only a son, who needs to be loved, forgiven and saved. Hatred increasingly parasitizes the heart of the Christian in his evangelical desire for justice and freedom. May God help us to enter the new creation free from all evil.

1ère lecture : Dt 8, 2-3.14b-16a
Moïse disait au peuple d’Israël : « Souviens-toi de la longue marche que tu as faite pendant quarante années dans le désert ; le Seigneur ton Dieu te l’a imposée pour te faire passer par la pauvreté ; il voulait t’éprouver et savoir ce que tu as dans le cœur : allais-tu garder ses commandements, oui ou non ? Il t’a fait passer par la pauvreté, il t’a fait sentir la faim, et il t’a donné à manger la manne – cette nourriture que ni toi ni tes pères n’aviez connue – pour que tu saches que l’homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais de tout ce qui vient de la bouche du Seigneur. R/ Glorifie le Seigneur, Jérusalem !
Glorifie le Seigneur, Jérusalem ! Célèbre ton Dieu, ô Sion ! Il a consolidé les barres de tes portes, dans tes murs il a béni tes enfants.
Il fait régner la paix à tes frontières, et d’un pain de froment te rassasie. Il envoie sa parole sur la terre : rapide, son verbe la parcourt. Il révèle sa parole à Jacob, ses volontés et ses lois à Israël. Pas un peuple qu’il ait ainsi traité ; nul autre n’a connu ses volontés.
2ème lecture: 1 Co 10, 16-17
Frères, la coupe de bénédiction que nous bénissons, n’est-elle pas communion au sang du Christ ? Le pain que nous rompons, n’est-il pas communion au corps du Christ ? Puisqu’il y a un seul pain, la multitude que nous sommes est un seul corps, car nous avons tous part à un seul pain.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait aux foules des Juifs : « Moi, je suis le pain vivant, qui est descendu du ciel : si quelqu’un mange de ce pain, il vivra éternellement. Le pain que je donnerai, c’est ma chair, donnée pour la vie du monde. » Les Juifs se querellaient entre eux : « Comment celui-là peut-il nous donner sa chair à manger ? » Jésus leur dit alors : « Amen, amen, je vous le dis : si vous ne mangez pas la chair du Fils de l’homme, et si vous ne buvez pas son sang, vous n’avez pas la vie en vous. Celui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang a la vie éternelle; et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour. En effet, ma chair est la vraie nourriture, et mon sang est la vraie boisson. Celui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang demeure en moi, et moi, je demeure en lui. De même que le Père, qui est vivant, m’a envoyé, et que moi je vis par le Père, de même celui qui me mange, lui aussi vivra par moi. Fais que nous possédions, Seigneur Jésus, la jouissance éternelle de ta divinité, Car nous en avons ici-bas l’avant-goût lorsque nous recevons ton corps et ton sang. Toi qui.
Méditation
Nous célébrons aujourd’hui la fête du Saint Sacrement, Corps et Sang du Christ. C’est Jésus lui-même qui se donne en nourriture ; nourriture essentielle pour notre vie. Les textes de ce dimanche nous préparent à accueillir ce don de Dieu. La tentation aujourd’hui est de croire que notre réussite vient du seul génie des hommes. « Souviens-toi ! » N’oublie jamais de te nourrir de la Parole de Dieu et de l’Eucharistie, le Pain descendu du ciel, Jésus lui-même. Sa chair et son sang sont une nourriture qui donne la Vie éternelle. Il faut se nourrir de son enseignement et boire ses paroles. Elles sont celles du Fils qui nous apporte la vie du Père. Mais pour accueillir ce don, il nous faut sortir de nos certitudes et de nos raisonnements humains. Il nous faut avoir un cœur de pauvre, entièrement ouvert à celui qui est « le Chemin, la Vérité et la Vie ». L’Eucharistie est « Pain de Vie ». Cette fête aujourd’hui doit raviver notre désir de communion avec Dieu pour « demeurer en lui et lui en nous. »

The blessing-cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ, and the bread that we break is a communion with the body of Christ. The fact that there is only one loaf means that, though there are many of us, we form a single body because we all have a share in this one loaf.

Meditation
Today we celebrate the feast of the Blessed Sacrament, the Body and Blood of Christ. It is Jesus who gives himself as food; essential food for our life. The texts of this Sunday prepare us to welcome this gift of God. The temptation today is to believe that our success comes only from the genius of men. Remember! Never forget to feed on the Word of God and the Eucharist, the Bread that came down from heaven, Jesus himself. His flesh and blood are food that gives eternal life. We must feed on his teaching and drink his words. They are those of the Son who brings us the life of the Father. But to welcome this gift, we must leave our certainties and our human reasoning. We must have a poor man’s heart, completely open to him who is “the Way, the Truth and the Life”. The Eucharist is “Bread of Life”. This feast today must rekindle our desire for communion with God to “remain in him and he in us.”

First reading: Tobit 12: 1, 5-15, 20
When the feasting was over, Tobit called his son Tobias and said, “My son, you ought to think about paying the amount due to your fellow traveller; give him more than the figure agreed on.” So Tobias called his companion and said, “Take half of what you brought back, in payment for all you have done, and go in peace.” Then Raphael took them both aside and said, “Bless God, utter his praise before all the living for all the favours he has given you. In his teaching Jesus said, “Beware of the scribes who like to walk about in long robes, to be greeted obsequiously in the market squares, to take the front seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets; these are the men who swallow the property of widows, while making a show of lengthy prayers. The more severe will be the sentence they receive.” He sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the treasury, and many of the rich put in a great deal. A poor widow came and put in two small coins, the equivalent of a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “I tell you solemnly, this poor widow has put more in than all who have contributed to the treasury; for they have all put in money they had over, but she from the little she had has put in everything she possessed, all she had to live on.”

Trusting in your compassion, O Lord, we come eagerly with our offerings to your sacred altar, that, through the purifying action of your grace, we may be cleansed by the very mysteries we serve. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
Jesus saw this widow put her penny into the treasury. He liked her gesture and communicated something important to his disciples: “Amen, I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.” First of all, she gave despite her poverty which did not discourage her. Secondly, she gave all she had. Although poor, she had something to give to God. She accepted to be lacking, so that God, in her life, was the first to be served. Unlike us today, she knew how to face the risk of being in lack, like the widow of Zarephath who sacrificed her last handful of flour for Elijah. Neither before God nor before men was she afraid to give of all her poverty; this is what touched Jesus. She knew that she would be poorer for it, but her simple, upright faith told her that God would provide and that she did not have to become rich to give. God welcomes the offering of the poor who accept to remain before him and before poor people.

Prière d’ouverture
Seigneur notre Père, nous en appelons à ta providence qui jamais ne se trompe en ses desseins : tout ce qui fait du mal, écarte-le, et donne-nous ce qui peut nous aider. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Tb 12, 1.5-15.20
En ces jours-là, quand les noces furent achevées, Tobith appela son fils Tobie et lui dit : « Mon enfant, pense à donner son salaire à ton compagnon de voyage, et ajoute un supplément.» Tobith appela Raphaël et lui dit : « Accepte comme salaire la moitié de tout ce que tu as rapporté, et va, porte-toi bien ! » Alors l’ange les prit tous deux à part et leur dit : « Bénissez Dieu et célébrez-le devant tous les vivants pour le bien qu’il vous a fait. Bénissez-le et chantez son nom. Annoncez à tous les hommes les actions de Dieu comme elles le méritent, et n’hésitez pas à le célébrer. S’il est bon de tenir cachés les secrets d’un roi, il faut révéler les œuvres de Dieu et les célébrer comme elles le méritent. Faites le bien, et le mal ne vous atteindra pas. Mieux vaut prier avec vérité et faire l’aumône avec justice, qu’être riche avec injustice. Mieux vaut faire l’aumône qu’amasser de l’or. L’aumône délivre de la mort et purifie de tout péché. Ceux qui font l’aumône seront rassasiés de vie, tandis que le pécheur et l’homme injuste sont leurs propres ennemis. Je veux vous révéler toute la vérité, sans rien vous cacher. Je viens de vous dire que, s’il est bon de tenir cachés les secrets d’un roi, il faut révéler les œuvres de Dieu comme elles le méritent. Eh bien ! Quand tu priais en même temps que Sarra, c’était moi qui présentais votre prière devant la gloire de Dieu, pour qu’il la garde en mémoire, et je faisais de même lorsque tu enterrais les morts. Quand tu n’as pas hésité à te lever, à laisser ton repas et à partir enterrer un mort, c’est alors que j’ai été envoyé vers toi pour te mettre à l’épreuve, mais Dieu m’a aussi envoyé pour te guérir, ainsi que Sarra, ta belle-fille. Moi, je suis Raphaël, l’un des sept anges qui se tiennent ou se présentent devant la gloire du Seigneur. Et maintenant, bénissez le Seigneur sur la terre ! Célébrez Dieu ! Voici que je remonte auprès de celui qui m’a envoyé. Mettez par écrit tout ce qui vous est arrivé. » Alors l’ange remonta au ciel.

En ce temps-là, dans son enseignement, Jésus disait : « Méfiez- vous des scribes, qui tiennent à se promener en vêtements d’apparat et qui aiment les salutations sur les places publiques, les sièges d’honneur dans les synagogues, et les places d’honneur dans les dîners. Ils dévorent les biens des veuves et, pour l’apparence, ils font de longues prières : ils seront d’autant plus sévèrement jugés. » Jésus s’était assis dans le Temple en face de la salle du trésor, et regardait comment la foule y mettait de l’argent. Beaucoup de riches y mettaient de grosses sommes. Une pauvre veuve s’avança et mit deux petites pièces de monnaie. Jésus appela ses disciples et leur déclara : « Amen, je vous le dis : cette pauvre veuve a mis dans le Trésor plus que tous les autres. Car tous, ils ont pris sur leur superflu, mais elle, elle a pris sur son indigence : elle a mis tout ce qu’elle possédait, tout ce qu’elle avait pour vivre. »
Prière sur les offrandes
Confiants dans ton amour, Seigneur, nous venons à ton autel avec nos offrandes: puissions-nous, par un effet de ta grâce, être purifiés dans l’Eucharistie que nous célébrons. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Jésus avait vu cette veuve poser son denier dans le tronc. Il a aimé son geste et a communiqué quelque chose d’important à ses disciples : « Amen, je vous le dis, cette pauvre veuve a mis plus que tous les autres dans le trésor. » Tout d’abord elle a donné malgré sa pauvreté qui ne l’a pas découragée. Bien que pauvre, elle avait quelque chose à donner à Dieu. Elle a accepté de manquer, pour que Dieu, dans sa vie, fût le premier servi. Contrairement à nous aujourd’hui, elle a su affronter le risque de manquer, comme la veuve de Sarepta, qui a sacrifié pour Elie sa dernière poignée de farine. Ni devant Dieu, ni devant les hommes, elle n’a eu peur de donner de toute sa pauvreté ; voilà ce qui touche Jésus. Elle savait qu’elle allait ainsi s’appauvrir d’avantage, mais sa foi toute simple et droite lui disait que Dieu pourvoira et qu’elle n’avait pas à devenir riche pour donner. Dieu accueille avec joie l’offrande des pauvres qui acceptent de rester devant lui et devant les hommes pauvres.
