SAINT Ephrem,
Diacre et Docteur de l’Eglise
Théologien et poète, Ephrem (vers 306-373) refusa le sacerdoce par humilité et fut diacre à Nisibe, puis à Edesse. Il composa en syriaque des commentaires de la Bible, des homélies et des hymnes qui l’ont fait surnommer ‘’la cithare du Saint-Esprit’’. Il a exprimé dans ses poèmes une tendre dévotion à la Vierge Marie.

Regarde-moi, Seigneur, et prends pitié de moi, car je suis seul et misérable ; vois ma misère et ma peine, enlève tous mes péchés.

1ère lecture : Tb 11, 5-17
En ces jours-là, Anna était assise à l’entrée de la cour et surveillait la route par laquelle son fils était parti. Elle le reconnut qui arrivait et cria à Tobith : « Voici ton fils qui revient, et aussi son compagnon de voyage. » Raphaël dit à Tobie, avant que celui-ci ne s’approche de son père : « J’ai la certitude que ses yeux vont s’ouvrir. Étale sur eux le fiel du poisson ; le remède provoquera la contraction des yeux et en détachera le voile blanchâtre. Ton père retrouvera la vue et verra la lumière. » Anna courut se jeter au cou de son fils et lui dit : « Je te revois, mon enfant. À présent, je peux mourir ! » Et elle se mit à pleurer. Quant à Tobith, il se leva et franchit l’entrée de la cour en trébuchant. Tobie alla vers lui, le fiel du poisson à la main. Il lui souffla dans les yeux, le saisit et lui dit : « Confiance, père ! » Puis il lui appliqua le remède et en rajouta. Ensuite, de ses deux mains, il lui retira les pellicules en partant du coin des yeux. Tobith se jeta alors au cou de son fils et lui dit en pleurant : « Je te revois, mon enfant, toi, la lumière de mes yeux ! » Et il ajouta : « Béni soit Dieu ! Béni soit son grand nom ! Bénis soient tous ses saints anges! Que son grand nom soit sur nous ! Bénis soient tous les anges pour tous les siècles ! Car Dieu m’avait frappé, mais voici que je revois mon fils Tobie. » Tobie entra dans la maison, tout joyeux et bénissant Dieu à pleine voix. Il raconta à son père qu’il avait fait bon voyage, qu’il rapportait l’argent et comment il avait épousé Sarra, la fille de Ragouël: « La voilà qui arrive, ajouta-t-il ; elle est aux portes de Ninive. » Tobith partit à la rencontre de sa belle-fille, aux portes de Ninive; il était tout joyeux et bénissait Dieu. En le voyant marcher d’un pas ferme et traverser la ville sans que personne le conduise par la main, les habitants furent émerveillés, et Tobith proclamait que Dieu l’avait pris en pitié et lui avait rouvert les yeux. Quand il arriva près de Sarra, la femme de son fils Tobie, il la bénit en disant : « Sois la bienvenue, ma fille ! Béni soit ton Dieu de t’avoir menée vers nous ! Béni soit ton père ! Béni soit mon fils Tobie et bénie sois-tu, ma fille ! Sois la bienvenue dans ta maison, sois comblée de bénédiction et de joie. Entre, ma fille ! » Ce jour-là fut un jour de joie pour les Juifs qui habitaient Ninive.

Je veux louer le Seigneur tant que je vis, chanter mes hymnes pour mon Dieu tant que je dure. Heureux qui s’appuie sur le Dieu de Jacob, qui met son espoir dans le Seigneur son Dieu.
Il garde à jamais sa fidélité, il fait justice aux opprimés, aux affamés, il donne le pain ; le Seigneur délie les enchaînés.
Le Seigneur ouvre les yeux des aveugles, le Seigneur redresse les accablés, le Seigneur aime les justes, le Seigneur protège l’étranger.
Il soutient la veuve et l’orphelin, il égare les pas du méchant. D’âge en âge, le Seigneur régnera : ton Dieu, ô Sion, pour toujours !
Évangile : Mc 12, 35-37
En ce temps-là, quand Jésus enseignait dans le Temple, il déclarait : « Comment les scribes peuvent-ils dire que le Messie est le fils de David ? David lui-même a dit, inspiré par l’Esprit Saint : Le Seigneur a dit à mon Seigneur : “Siège à ma droite jusqu’à ce que j’aie placé tes ennemis sous tes pieds !” David lui-même le nomme Seigneur. D’où vient alors qu’il est son fils ? » Et la foule nombreuse l’écoutait avec plaisir.

Confiants dans ton amour, Seigneur, nous venons à ton autel avec nos offrandes: puissions-nous, par un effet de ta grâce, être purifiés dans l’Eucharistie que nous célébrons. Par Jésus.

Méditation
« David lui-même le nomme Seigneur. D’où vient alors qu’il est son fils ? » La promesse faisait mention d’un Messie, un homme, un fils de David. Mais Dieu a envoyé un Messie qui est plus qu’un homme, puisqu’il partage la gloire de celui qui l’envoie et, par-dessus tout, porte le nom de Seigneur. Les Juifs ne le croyaient pas si grand qu’il fût éternel, et ils l’ont méconnu de même dans son abaissement que dans sa mort. Mais nous, nous croyons que l’attente de l’homme, si pénible soit-elle, doit se prolonger dans la foi en la bonté de Dieu ; elle débouchera sur un bonheur plus grand, peut-être même ici-bas. Nous confessons que le Seigneur Jésus, fils de David et Fils de Dieu est pour toute l’humanité un mystère et un appel. Puisse sa personne ne jamais cesser de nous interpeler, afin qu’à travers lui et en lui nous cherchons continuellement le père.

SAINT EPHRAEM THE DEACON
Saint Ephraem was a poet and a theologian. He is famous not only for the beauty of expression of his homilies but also for his hymns, which have spread far beyond his native Syriac church and are in use in East and West alike.

First reading: Tobit 11: 5-17
Anna was sitting, watching the road by which her son would come. She was sure at once it must be he and said to the father, “Here comes your son, with his companion.” Raphael said to Tobias before he reached his father, “I give you my word that your father’s eyes will open. You must put the fish’s gall to his eyes; the medicine will smart and will draw a filmy white skin off his eyes. And your father will be able to see and look on the light.” The mother ran forward and threw her arms round her son’s neck. “Now I can die,” she said “I have seen you again.” And she wept. Tobit rose to his feet and stumbled across the courtyard through the door. Tobias came on towards him (he had the fish’s gall in his hand). He blew into his eyes and said, steadying him, “Take courage, father!” With this he applied the medicine, left it there a while, then with both hands peeled away a filmy skin from the corners of his eyes. Then his father fell on his neck and wept. He exclaimed, “I can see, my son, the light of my eyes!” And he said: “Blessed be God! Blessed be his great name! Blessed be all his holy angels! Blessed be his great name for evermore! For he had scourged me and now has had pity on me and I see my son Tobias.” Tobias went into the house, and with a loud voice joyfully blessed God. Then he told his father everything: how his journey had been successful and he had brought the silver back; how he had married Sarah, the daughter of Raguel; how she was following him now, close behind, and could not be far from the gates of Nineveh. Tobit set off to the gates of Nineveh to meet his daughter-in-law, giving joyful praise to God as he went. When the people of Nineveh saw him walking without a guide and stepping forward as briskly as of old, they were astonished. Tobit described to them how God had taken pity on him and had opened his eyes. Then Tobit met Sarah, the bride of his son Tobias, and blessed her in these words, “Welcome, daughter! Blessed be your God for sending you to us, my daughter. Blessings on your father, blessings on my son Tobias, blessings on yourself, my daughter. Welcome now to your own house in joyfulness and in blessedness. Come in, my daughter.” He held a feast that day for all the Jews of Nineveh.

David himself calls him Lord, in what way then can he be his son?” And the great majority of the people heard this with delight.

Meditation
“David himself calls him Lord. Where does it come from then that he is his son?” The promise mentioned a Messiah, a man, a son of David. But God sent a Messiah who is more than a man, since he shares the glory of the one who sent him and, above all, bears the name of Lord. The Jews did not believe him to be so great that he was eternal, and they disregarded him both in his abasement and in his death. But we believe that man’s expectation, however painful, must be prolonged in faith in the goodness of God; it will lead to a greater happiness, perhaps even here on earth. We confess that the Lord Jesus, son of David and Son of God, is for all humanity a mystery and a call. May his person never cease to challenge us, so that through him and in him we may continually seek the Father.
BLESSED JAMES BERTHIEU
Born in France, he was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1864. In 1875 he left for Madagascar where he spent the rest of his life. On the night of 8 June 1896, while he was praying, he was shot dead and his body thrown in the river Mananara.

He has a daughter called Sarah, but apart from Sarah he has no other son or daughter.” As they entered Ecbatana, Tobias said, “Brother Azarias, take me at once to our brother Raguel’s.” And he showed him the way to the house of Raguel, whom they found sitting beside his courtyard door. They greeted him first, and he replied, “Welcome and greetings, brothers.” And he took them into his house. He said to his wife Edna, “How like my brother Tobit this young man is!” Raguel killed a sheep from the flock, and they gave them a warm-hearted welcome. They washed and bathed and sat down to table. Then Tobias said to Raphael, “Brother Azarias, will you ask Raguel to give me my sister Sarah?” Raguel overheard the words, and said to the young man, “Eat and drink, and make the most of your evening; no one else has the right to take my daughter Sarah – no one but you, my brother. In any case I, for my own part, am not at liberty to give her to anyone else, since you are her next of kin. However, my boy, I must be frank with you: I have tried to find a husband for her seven times among our kinsmen, and all of them have died the first evening, on-going to her room. But for the present, my boy, eat and drink; the Lord will grant you his grace and peace.” Tobias spoke out, “I will not hear of eating and drinking till you have come to a decision about me.” Raguel answered, “Very well. Since, as prescribed by the Book of Moses, she is given to you, heaven itself decrees she shall be yours. I therefore entrust your sister to you. From now you are her brother and she is your sister. She is given to you from today for ever. The Lord of heaven favour you tonight, my child, and grant you his grace and peace.” Raguel called for his daughter Sarah, took her by the hand and gave her to Tobias with these words, “I entrust her to you; the law and the ruling recorded in the Book of Moses assign her to you as your wife. Take her; take her home to your father’s house with a good conscience. The God of heaven grant you a good journey in peace.” Then he turned to her mother and asked her to fetch him writing paper. He drew up the marriage contract, how he gave his daughter as bride to Tobias according to the ordinance in the Law of Moses. After this they began to eat and drink. The parents, meanwhile, had gone out and shut the door behind them. Tobias rose from the bed, and said to Sarah, “Get up, my sister! You and I must pray and petition our Lord to win his grace and his protection.” She stood up, and they began praying for protection, and this was how he began: “You are blessed, O God of our fathers; blessed, too, is your name for ever and ever. Let the heavens bless you and all things you have made for evermore. It was you who created Adam, you who created Eve his wife to be his help and support; and from these two the human race was born. It was you who said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; let us make him a helpmate like himself.’ And so I do not take my sister for any lustful motive; I do it in singleness of heart. Be kind enough to have pity on her and on me and bring us to old age together.” And together they said, “Amen, Amen”, and lay down for the night.

Disciple de saint Remi, il devint évêque de Vermand, près de Saint-Quentin. En 531, il consacra la reine sainte Radegonde à Dieu. On dit de lui qu’il était d’une grande bonté. Il donnait de larges aumônes à tous les indigents, y compris les paresseux.

Cet homme est ton parent, et il a une fille qui s’appelle Sarra. » Entré à Ecbatane, Tobie dit à Raphaël : « Azarias, mon frère, conduis-moi tout droit chez notre frère Ragouël. » Raphaël le conduisit donc chez Ragouël. Ils le trouvèrent assis à l’entrée de la cour et le saluèrent les premiers. Il leur répondit: « Grande joie à vous, frères, soyez les bienvenus ! », et il les fit entrer dans sa maison. Tobie et Raphaël prirent un bain, ils se lavèrent, avant de prendre place pour le repas. Puis, Tobie dit à Raphaël : « Azarias, mon frère, demande à Ragouël de me donner en mariage Sarra ma parente. » Ragouël entendit ces mots et dit au jeune Tobie : « Cette nuit, mange, bois, prends du bon temps : toi seul as le droit d’épouser ma fille Sarra, et moi-même je n’ai pas le pouvoir de la donner à un autre homme, puisque tu es mon plus proche parent. Pourtant, je dois te dire la vérité, mon enfant : je l’ai donnée en mariage à sept de nos frères, et ils sont morts la nuit même, au moment où ils allaient s’approcher d’elle. Mais à présent, mon enfant, mange et bois : le Seigneur interviendra en votre faveur. » Tobie répliqua: « Je ne mangerai ni ne boirai rien, tant que tu n’auras pas pris de décision à mon sujet. » Ragouël lui dit : « Soit ! elle t’est donnée en mariage selon le décret du Livre de Moïse ; c’est un jugement du ciel qui te l’a accordée. Emmène donc ta sœur. Car, dès à présent, tu es son frère et elle est ta sœur. À partir d’aujourd’hui elle t’est donnée pour toujours. Que le Seigneur du ciel veille sur vous cette nuit, mon enfant, et vous comble de sa miséricorde et de sa paix ! » Ragouël appela Sarra, qui vint vers lui. Il prit la main de sa fille et la confia à Tobie, en disant: « Emmène-la : conformément à la Loi et au décret consigné dans le Livre de Moïse, elle t’est donnée pour femme. Prends-la et conduis-la en bonne santé chez ton père. Et que le Dieu du ciel vous guide dans la paix ! » Puis il appela sa femme et lui dit d’apporter une feuille sur laquelle il écrivit l’acte de mariage, selon lequel il donnait Sarra à Tobie conformément au décret de la loi de Moïse. Après quoi, on commença à manger et à boire. Ragouël s’adressa à sa femme Edna : « Va préparer la seconde chambre, ma sœur, et tu y conduiras notre fille. » Elle s’en alla préparer le lit dans la chambre, comme Ragouël l’avait demandé, y conduisit sa fille et pleura sur elle. Puis, elle essuya ses larmes et lui dit : « Confiance, ma fille ! Que le Seigneur du ciel change ta douleur en joie ! Confiance, ma fille ! » Puis elle se retira. Quand les parents de Sarra eurent quitté la chambre et fermé la porte, Tobie sortit du lit et dit à Sarra : « Lève-toi, ma sœur. Prions, et demandons à notre Seigneur de nous combler de sa miséricorde et de son salut. » Elle se leva, et ils se mirent à prier et à demander que leur soit accordé le salut. Tobie commença ainsi : « Béni sois-tu, Dieu de nos pères ; béni soit ton nom dans toutes les générations, à jamais. Que les cieux te bénissent et toute ta création dans tous les siècles. C’est toi qui as fait Adam ; tu lui as fait une aide et un appui : Ève, sa femme. Et de tous deux est né le genre humain. C’est toi qui as dit: “Il n’est pas bon que l’homme soit seul. Je vais lui faire une aide qui lui soit semblable.” Aussi, ce n’est pas pour une union illégitime que je prends ma sœur que voici, mais dans la vérité de la Loi. Daigne me faire miséricorde, ainsi qu’à elle, et nous mener ensemble à un âge avancé.» Puis ils dirent d’une seule voix : « Amen ! Amen ! » Et ils se couchèrent pour la nuit.

Heureux qui craint le Seigneur et marche selon ses voies ! Tu te nourriras du travail de tes mains : Heureux es- tu! À toi, le bonheur!
Ta femme sera dans ta maison comme une vigne généreuse, et tes fils, autour de la table, comme des plants d’olivier.
3. Voilà comment sera béni l’homme qui craint le Seigneur. De Sion, que le Seigneur te bénisse ! Tu verras le bonheur de Jérusalem tous les jours de ta vie.
Évangile : Mc 12, 28b-34
En ce temps-là, un scribe s’avança pour demander à Jésus : « Quel est le premier de tous les commandements ? » Jésus lui fit cette réponse : « Voici le premier : Écoute, Israël : le Seigneur notre Dieu est l’unique Seigneur. Tu aimeras le Seigneur ton Dieu de tout ton cœur, de toute ton âme, de tout ton esprit et de toute ta force. Et voici le second : Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même. Il n’y a pas de commandement plus grand que ceux-là. » Le scribe reprit : « Fort bien, Maître, tu as dit vrai : Dieu est l’Unique et il n’y en a pas d’autre que lui. L’aimer de tout son cœur, de toute son intelligence, de toute sa force, et aimer son prochain comme soi-même, vaut mieux que toute offrande d’holocaustes et de sacrifices.» Jésus, voyant qu’il avait fait une remarque judicieuse, lui dit : « Tu n’es pas loin du royaume de Dieu. » Et personne n’osait plus l’interroger.

« Quel est le premier de tous les commandements, celui qui passe avant tout ? » Jésus répond, en somme : « il y a un premier, et il y a un second ». Il faut donc bien admettre une hiérarchie des devoirs. Tu aimeras le Seigneur ton Dieu de tout ton être. Tu l’aimeras de toutes les ressources de ta personne. Puis tu aimeras ton prochain en espérant pour lui ce dont tu rêves pour toi-même. C’est donc d’un même élan que tu aimeras ton Dieu et ton frère. Pas de précepte plus grand que ce double amour pour un même cœur. Aujourd’hui encore, pour nous détacher des idoles de nos mains ou de notre cœur, le Seigneur nous redit ce qui doit être l’essentiel d’une vie : l’Amour.

SAINT COLMAN OF DROMORE
He was active in the late fifth and early sixth centuries. He spent most of his life in the Dromore area of County Down. He was persuaded by Saint Mac Nissi to settle at Dromore in around 514, where he became the first bishop of the See of Dromore.

The servant-girl said, “Yes, you kill your bridegrooms yourself. That makes seven already to whom you have been given, and you have not once been in luck yet. Just because your bridegrooms have died, that is no reason for punishing us. Go and join them, and may we be spared the sight of any child of yours!” That day, she grieved, she sobbed, and went up to her father’s room intending to hang herself. But then she thought, “Suppose they blamed my father! They will say, “You had an only daughter whom you loved, and now she has hanged herself for grief.” I cannot cause my father a sorrow which would bring down his old age to the dwelling of the dead. I should do better not to hang myself, but to beg the Lord to let me die and not live to hear anymore insults.” This time the prayer of each of them found favour before the glory of God, and Raphael was sent to bring remedy to them both. He was to take the white spots from the eyes of Tobit, so that he might see God’s light with his own eyes; and he was to give Sarah, the daughter of Raguel, as bride to Tobias son of Tobit, and to rid her of Asmodeus, that worst of demons. For it was to Tobias before all other suitors that she belonged by right. Tobit was coming back from the courtyard into the house at the same moment as Sarah, the daughter of Raguel, was coming down from the upper room.

Now there were seven brothers. The first married a wife and then died leaving no children. The second married the widow, and he too died leaving no children; with the third it was the same, and none of the seven left any children. Last of all the woman herself died. Now at the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be, since she had been married to all seven?” Jesus said to them, “Is not the reason why you go wrong, that you understand neither the scriptures nor the power of God? Meditation
To make himself known to Moses, God referred to the three patriarchs as living. They are alive when God speaks to Moses, because they have been enlivened by the power of God since the moment of their bodily death, and so they are destined for the Resurrection. The same mystery will happen to all those who die in friendship with God. The Resurrection is not a reproduction of the habits of this world; it is communion with the life of God. Thus, whether it be brotherly life, married life, filial piety or the tenderness of loved ones, all love which, on earth, will have translated the love of God, will be taken up, assumed, and transcended by the love of God which will be all in all, for love of God. Yes, to believe in the Resurrection is to allow oneself to be inhabited by hope. It changes the way we look around us. May we be graced to taste the fruits of the Resurrection through each Eucharist.

SAINT NORBERT
He was born in Xanten, Germany. After a period of worldly life, at the age of 35 he had a narrow escape from death and his life changed. He became a priest. He founded a religious Order after the rule of St. Augustine. He died in 1134.

But the more ointments they tried me with, the more the spots blinded me, and in the end I became blind altogether. Quick, let the owners have it back; we have no right to eat stolen goods.” She said, “No, it was a present given me over and above my wages.” I did not believe her, and told her to give it back to the owners (I blushed at this in her presence). Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay, yes or no?” Seeing through their hypocrisy he said to them, “Why do you set this trap for me? Meditation
In addition to indirect taxes, all those subject to the Roman dictatorship had to pay a personal tax called the tribute, and only children and the elderly were exempted. This tribute was hated by all, especially by the resistance fighters (Zealots) who forced people to refuse it, because it was a sign of subjection to the Roman occupier. Suddenly, Jesus comes to oppose this trap with a truth that is imposed on all. We have to understand that the limits of life here on earth must not in any way affect our hope which must remain great. May the Lord give us the knowledge to render to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to seek constantly to render to God what is God’s. For as St. Augustine tells us: “Let your country be more important to you than your parents! Do not listen to them if they give you an order against the fatherland! But do not listen to your country, if it were to give you an order against God.”

SAINT NORBERT, Evêque
Né à Xante dans une famille de la noblesse rhénane, Norbert de Gennep fut d’abord un clerc courtisan à la cour impériale. Il se convertit brusquement pour se vouer à la pénitence et à la prédication itinérante. Il fonda à Prémontré, près de Laon, un ordre de chanoines réguliers la vie commune et exerçant un ministère pastoral. Elu archevêque de Magdebourg, il y fit une œuvre de réformateur. Il est un des premiers saints caractérisés par la dévotion très grande envers l’eucharistie.

1ère lecture : Tb 2, 9-14
Cette nuit-là, lors de la fête de la Pentecôte, après avoir enterré un mort, moi, Tobith, je pris un bain, puis j’entrai dans la cour de ma maison et je m’étendis contre le mur de la cour, le visage découvert à cause de la chaleur. Je ne m’aperçus pas qu’il y avait des moineaux dans le mur, au-dessus de moi, et leur fiente me tomba toute chaude dans les yeux et provoqua des leucomes. Je me rendis chez les médecins pour être soigné, mais plus ils m’appliquaient leurs baumes, plus ce voile blanchâtre m’empêchait de voir, et je finis par devenir complètement aveugle : je restai privé de la vue durant quatre ans. Tous mes frères s’apitoyaient sur mon sort, et Ahikar pourvut à mes besoins pendant deux ans jusqu’à son départ pour l’Élymaïde. Pendant ce temps-là, ma femme Anna, pour gagner sa vie, exécutait des travaux d’ouvrière, qu’elle livrait à ses patrons, et ceux-ci lui réglaient son salaire. Or, le sept du mois de Dystros, elle acheva une pièce de tissu et l’envoya à ses patrons ; ils lui réglèrent tout ce qu’ils lui devaient et, pour un repas de fête, ils lui offrirent un chevreau pris à sa mère. Arrivé chez moi, le chevreau se mit à bêler. J’appelai ma femme et lui dis : « D’où vient ce chevreau ? N’aurait-il pas été volé ? Rends-le à ses propriétaires. Car nous ne sommes pas autorisés à manger quoi que ce soit de volé!» Elle me dit : « Mais c’est un cadeau qu’on m’a donné en plus de mon salaire ! » Je refusai de la croire, je lui dis de rendre l’animal à ses propriétaires, et je me fâchai contre ma femme à cause de cela. Alors elle me répliqua : « Qu’en est-il donc de tes aumônes ? Qu’en est-il de tes bonnes œuvres ? On voit bien maintenant ce qu’elles signifient ! »

En ce temps-là, on envoya à Jésus des pharisiens et des partisans d’Hérode pour lui tendre un piège en le faisant parler, et ceux-ci vinrent lui dire : « Maître, nous le savons : tu es toujours vrai ; tu ne te laisses influencer par personne, car ce n’est pas selon l’apparence que tu considères les gens, mais tu enseignes le chemin de Dieu selon la vérité. Est-il permis, oui ou non, de payer l’impôt à César, l’empereur? Devons- nous payer, oui ou non ? » Mais lui, sachant leur hypocrisie, leur dit : « Pourquoi voulez-vous me mettre à l’épreuve ? Faites-moi voir une pièce d’argent. » Ils en apportèrent une, et Jésus leur dit : « Cette effigie et cette inscription, de qui sont-elles ? – De César », répondent-ils. Jésus leur dit : « Ce qui est à César, rendez-le à César, et à Dieu ce qui est à Dieu. » Et ils étaient remplis d’étonnement à son sujet.

Confiants dans ton amour, Seigneur, nous venons à ton autel avec nos offrandes : puissions-nous, par un effet de ta grâce, être purifiés dans l’Eucharistie que nous célébrons. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Tous soumis à la dictature Romaine devaient payer, en plus des impôts indirects, un impôt personnel qu’on appelait le tribut et donc seuls les enfants et les vieillards étaient exemptés. Signe de sujétion à l’occupant romain, ce tribut était honni de tous, tout spécialement des résistants (Zélotes), qui forçaient les gens à le refuser. Voilà que soudain, à ce piège Jésus vient opposer une vérité qui s’impose à tous. Il s’agit pour nous de comprendre que les limites de la vie ici-bas ne doivent en rien porter atteinte à notre espérance qui doit demeurer grande. Puisse le Seigneur nous donner de savoir rendre à César ce qui est à César et rechercher en permanence à rendre à Dieu ce qui est à Dieu. Car comme nous le dit Saint Augustin : « Que la patrie soit pour toi plus que tes parents eux-mêmes ! Ne les écoute pas s’ils te donnaient un ordre contre la patrie ! Mais n’écoute pas ta patrie, si elle te donnait un ordre contre Dieu ».

Apôtre de la Germanie et moine bénédictin anglais du nom de Winfrid. D’abord avec saint Willibord, puis seul, il parcourt la Germanie où il fonde des monastères, notamment à Fulda. Grégoire II le sacre évêque et lui donne le nom de Boniface. Devenu archevêque de Mayence, il garde le même souci d’annoncer l’Evangile ; à 84 ans, il part en Frise et y est massacré le jour de la Pentecôte. Son corps fut ramené à Fulda, où l’épiscopat allemand tient ses assemblées.

Saint Boniface est vraiment un martyr, car il a versé son sang pour le nom du Christ ; il n’a pas craint les menaces, et il est parvenu au Royaume du ciel.
Prière d’ouverture
Permets, Seigneur, qu’a l’intercession de saint Boniface, nous puissions tenir sans défaillance et proclamer par toute notre vie la foi qu’il a lui-même enseignée, et dont il sut témoigner dans le martyre. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Tb 12, 1.5-15.20
Moi, Tobith, j’ai marché dans les voies de la vérité et j’ai fait ce qui est juste tous les jours de ma vie ; j’ai fait beaucoup d’aumônes à mes frères et aux gens de ma nation qui avaient été emmenés captifs avec moi au pays des Assyriens, à Ninive. Lors de notre fête de la Pentecôte, qui est la sainte fête des Semaines, on me prépara un bon repas et je m’étendis pour le prendre. On plaça devant moi une table et on me servit quantité de petits plats. Alors je dis à mon fils Tobie : « Va, mon enfant, essaie de trouver parmi nos frères déportés à Ninive un pauvre qui se souvienne de Dieu de tout son cœur ; amène-le pour qu’il partage mon repas. Moi, mon enfant, j’attendrai que tu sois de retour. » Tobie partit chercher un pauvre parmi nos frères. À son retour, il dit : « Père ! – Qu’y a-t-il, mon enfant? – Père, quelqu’un de notre nation a été assassiné ; il a été jeté sur la place publique, il vient d’y être étranglé. » Laissant là mon repas avant même d’y avoir touché, je me précipitai, j’enlevai de la place le cadavre que je déposai dans une dépendance en attendant le coucher du soleil pour l’enterrer. À mon retour, je pris un bain et je mangeai mon pain dans le deuil, en me rappelant la parole que le prophète Amos avait dite sur Béthel : « Vos fêtes se changeront en deuil, et tous vos chants en lamentation.» Et je me mis à pleurer. Puis, quand le soleil fut couché, je partis creuser une tombe pour enterrer le mort. Mes voisins se moquaient de moi : « N’a-t-il donc plus peur ?, disaient-ils. On l’a déjà recherché pour le tuer à cause de cette manière d’agir, et il a dû s’enfuir. Et voilà qu’il recommence à enterrer les morts ! »

Alléluia ! Heureux qui craint le Seigneur, qui aime entièrement sa volonté ! Sa lignée sera puissante sur la terre ; la race des justes est bénie.
Les richesses affluent dans sa maison: à jamais se maintiendra sa justice. Lumière des cœurs droits, il s’est levé dans les ténèbres, homme de justice, de tendresse et de pitié.
L’homme de bien a pitié, il partage; il mène ses affaires avec droiture. Cet homme jamais ne tombera ; toujours on fera mémoire du juste.

En ce temps-là, Jésus se mit à parler en paraboles aux chefs des prêtres, aux scribes et aux anciens : « Un homme planta une vigne, il l’entoura d’une clôture,
y creusa un pressoir et y bâtit une tour de garde. Puis il loua cette vigne à des vignerons, et partit en voyage. Le moment venu, il envoya un serviteur auprès des vignerons pour se faire remettre par eux ce qui lui revenait des fruits de la vigne. Mais les vignerons se saisirent du serviteur, le frappèrent, et le renvoyèrent les mains vides. De nouveau, il leur envoya un autre serviteur ; et celui-là, ils l’assommèrent et l’humilièrent. Il en envoya encore un autre, et celui-là ils le tuèrent ; puis beaucoup d’autres serviteurs : ils frappèrent les uns et tuèrent les autres. Il lui restait encore quelqu’un : son fils bien-aimé. Il l’envoya vers eux en dernier, en se disant : « Ils respecteront mon fils. » Mais ces vignerons-là se dirent entre eux : « Voici l’héritier : allons-y ! tuons-le, et l’héritage va être à nous ! Ils se saisirent de lui, le tuèrent, et le jetèrent hors de la vigne. Que fera le maître de la vigne ?
Il viendra, fera périr les vignerons, et donnera la vigne à d’autres. N’avez-vous pas lu ce passage de l’Écriture ? La pierre qu’ont rejetée les bâtisseurs est devenue la pierre d’angle c’est là l’œuvre du Seigneur, la merveille devant nos yeux ! » Les chefs du peuple cherchaient à arrêter Jésus, mais ils eurent peur de la foule. Ils avaient bien compris en effet qu’il avait dit la parabole à leur intention. Ils le laissèrent donc et s’en allèrent.
Prière sur les offrandes
Accepte, Seigneur, les offrandes que nous apportons en la fête de saint Boniface, qu’elles soient précieuses à tes yeux, comme le fut le sang de ton martyr. Par Jésus.

« Je suis la vigne et vous êtes les sarments, dit le Seigneur. Celui qui demeure en moi et en qui je demeure, celui-là donne beaucoup de fruit. »
Prière après la communion :
Déjà renouvelés par tes mystères très saints, nous te supplions, Seigneur. Puissions-nous imiter le courage de saint Boniface, afin de connaître un jour le bonheur du ciel que tu réserves à ceux qui souffrent pour toi. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Au Temple, Jésus est confronté aux grands prêtres, aux anciens et aux scribes. Il n’a pas voulu leur révéler explicitement d’où il tenait son autorité (Mc 11,28). Mais Il est un homme, qui met tout en œuvre pour sa vigne… La vigne du Seigneur de l’univers, c’est la maison d’Israël, et les gens de Juda sont le plant qu’il chérissait. Il en attendait le droit, et c’est l’injustice. Il en attendait la justice, et il ne trouve que les cris des malheureux. (Is 5,7). Dans la parabole qu’il donne, ce n’est pas le manque de fruits (comme avec le figuier) ou leur mauvaise qualité qui seront dénoncés, mais la cupidité des vignerons et cela indépendamment de la productivité de la vigne. Après avoir reçu grâces après grâce gratuitement, comme les vignerons indélicats, nous n’en avons peut-être pas fait bon usage. Éloignons-nous de nos mauvais comportements et convertissons-nous en nous responsabilisant et en accueillant le Dieu de Miséricorde.

Saint Boniface
Bishop, Martyr
Born in England about 680, St. Boniface became a Benedictine monk. He was appointed the first bishop of Germany by Pope Gregory II. Together with thirty companions, he died a martyrs dead in 754.

This Saint went as far as death, handing over his life to destruction for the work of Christ.

May the Martyr Saint Boniface be our advocate, O Lord, that we may firmly hold the faith he taught with his lips and sealed in his blood and confidently profess it by our deeds. First reading: Tobit 1:3, 2: 1-8
I, Tobit, have walked in paths of truth and in good works all the days of my life. I have given much in alms to my brothers and fellow countrymen, exiled like me to Nineveh in the country of Assyria. In the reign of Esarhaddon I returned home, and my wife Anna was restored to me with my son Tobias. At our feast of Pentecost (the feast of Weeks) there was a good dinner. I took my place for the meal; the table was brought to me and various dishes were brought. Then I said to my son Tobias, “Go, my child, and seek out some poor, loyal-hearted man among our brothers exiled in Nineveh, and bring him to share my meal. I will wait until you come back, my child.” So Tobias went out to look for some poor man among our brothers, but he came back again and said, “Father!” I answered, “What is it, my child?” He went on, “Father, one of our nation has just been murdered; he has been strangled and then thrown down in the market place; he is there still.” I sprang up at once, left my meal untouched, took the man from the market place and laid him in one of my rooms, waiting until sunset to bury him. I came in again and washed myself and ate my bread in sorrow, remembering the words of the prophet Amos concerning Bethel: Your feasts will be turned to mourning, and all your songs to lamentation. R/ Happy the man who fears the Lord.
Happy the man who fears the Lord, who takes delight in all his commands. His sons will be powerful on earth; the children of the upright are blessed.

Gospel: Mark 12:1-12
Jesus began to speak to the chief priests, the scribes and the elders in parables: “A man planted a vineyard; he fenced it round, dug out a trough for the winepress and built a tower; then he leased it to tenants and went abroad. When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them his share of the produce from the vineyard. But they seized the man, thrashed him and sent him away empty-handed. Next, he sent another servant to them; him they beat about the head and treated shamefully. And he sent another and him they killed; then a number of others, and they thrashed some and killed the rest. He had still someone left: his beloved son. He sent him to them last of all. ‘They will respect my son’ he said. But those tenants said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come on, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they seized him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. Now what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and make an end of the tenants and give the vineyard to others. Have you not read this text of scripture: ‘It was the stone rejected by the builders that became the keystone. This was the Lord’s doing and it is wonderful to see?’” And they would have liked to arrest him, because they realised that the parable was aimed at them, but they were afraid of the crowds. So they left him alone and went away.
Prayer over the Offerings
As we commemorate the martyrdom of blessed N., O Lord, we make our offerings at your altar, praying that we, who celebrate the mysteries of our Lord’s Passion, may imitate what we now do. Through Christ our Lord.

As we celebrate the heavenly banquet, we beseech you, Lord, that, in following such a great example of faith, we may be encouraged by the remembrance of the blessed Martyr N. and led on by his (her) gracious intercession. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
In the Temple, Jesus confronts the chief priests, the elders and the scribes. He does not want to explicitly reveal to them where his authority comes from (Mk 11:28). But he is a man who does everything for his vineyard… The vineyard of the Lord of the universe is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are the plant he cherishes. He expected justice but got injustice. All he found was the cry of the wretched. (Is 5, 7). In the parable Jesus gives, it is not the lack of fruit (as with the fig tree) or its poor quality that will be denounced, but the greed of the vinedressers, regardless of the productivity of the vineyard. After having received grace after grace freely, we, like the indelicate vintners, may not have made good use of it. Let us turn away from our bad behaviours and convert ourselves by taking responsibility and welcoming the God of Mercy.

Meditation
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity. “May the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all…” The Holy Trinity is the feast of God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, God who is Love. By his way of life, by his words and his actions, Jesus shows us true love. This in forgiveness, in healing the sick, in welcoming all without exception. For there is no greater love than to give one’s life for those one loves. And today, he invites us to draw the consequences: “Love one another as I have loved you”. Our mission towards one another is to continue what Jesus did. That is why he sends us the Holy Spirit, to guide us towards the whole truth. It is by the love we have for one another that we will be recognized as disciples of Christ. May this same Holy Spirit make us a more fraternal people, who know how to give thanks every day.

1ère lecture : Ex 34, 4b-6.8-9
En ces jours-là, Moïse se leva de bon matin, et il gravit la montagne du Sinaï comme le Seigneur le lui avait ordonné. Il emportait les deux tables de pierre. Évangile : Jn 3, 16-18
Dieu a tellement aimé le monde qu’il a donné son Fils unique, afin que quiconque croit en lui ne se perde pas, mais obtienne la vie éternelle. Car Dieu a envoyé son Fils dans le monde, non pas pour juger le monde, mais pour que, par lui, le monde soit sauvé. Celui qui croit en lui échappe au Jugement ; celui qui ne croit pas est déjà jugé, du fait qu’il n’a pas cru au nom du Fils unique de Dieu.

Sanctifie, Seigneur notre Dieu, le sacrifice sur lequel nous invoquons ton nom très saint; Et, par cette eucharistie, fais de nous-mêmes une éternelle offrande à ta gloire. Par Jésus.

Puissions-nous trouver, Seigneur, le salut de l’âme et du corps dans le sacrement que nous avons reçu, Tandis que nous affirmons notre foi en la Trinité, éternelle et sainte, comme en son indivisible Unité. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Nous célébrons aujourd’hui la fête de la Sainte Trinité. « Que la grâce de Jésus-Christ, l’amour de Dieu le père et la communion de l’Esprit-Saint soient avec vous tous… » La Sainte Trinité, c’est la fête de Dieu qui est Père, Fils et Saint-Esprit, Dieu qui est Amour. Par sa manière de vivre, par ses paroles et ses actes, Jésus nous montre l’amour véritable. Ceci dans le pardon, les guérisons des malades, l’accueil de tous sans exception. Car il n’y a pas de plus grand amour que de donner sa vie pour ceux qu’on aime. Et aujourd’hui, il nous invite à en tirer les conséquences : « Aimez-vous les uns les autres comme je vous ai aimés ». Notre mission envers les uns et les autres, c’est de continuer ce que Jésus a fait. Voilà pourquoi Il nous envoie l’Esprit-Saint, pour qu’il nous guide vers la vérité toute entière. C’est à l’amour que nous aurons les uns pour les autres que nous serons reconnus comme disciples du Christ. Que ce même Esprit-Saint fasse de nous un un peuple plus fraternel, qui sache rendre grâce chaque jour.
