O God, who have commanded us to listen to your beloved Son, be pleased, we pray, to nourish us inwardly by your word, that, with spiritual sight made pure, we may rejoice to behold your glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Genesis 12: 1-4
The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country, your family and your father’s house, for the land I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name so famous that it will be used as a blessing. I will bless those who bless you: I will curse those who slight you. All the tribes of the earth shall bless themselves by you.” So Abram went as the Lord told him.

R/ May your love be upon us, O Lord, as we place all our hope in you.
The word of the Lord is faithful and all his works to be trusted. The Lord loves justice and right and fills the earth with his love.
The Lord looks on those who revere him, on those who hope in his love, to rescue their souls from death, to keep them alive in famine.
Our soul is waiting for the Lord. The Lord is our help and our shield. May your love be upon us, O Lord, as we place all our hope in you.
Second reading: 2 Timothy 1: 8-10
With me, bear the hardships for the sake of the Good News, relying on the power of God who has saved us and called us to be holy – not because of anything we ourselves have done but for his own purpose and by his own grace. This grace had already been granted to us, in Christ Jesus, before the beginning of time, but it has only been revealed by the Appearing of our saviour Christ Jesus. He abolished death, and he has proclaimed life and immortality through the Good News.

Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9
Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone. There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as the light. Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them; they were talking with him. Then Peter spoke to Jesus. “Lord,” he said, “it is wonderful for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” He was still speaking when suddenly a bright cloud covered them with shadow, and from the cloud there came a voice which said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen to him.” When they heard this the disciples fell on their faces overcome with fear. But Jesus came up and touched them. “Stand up,” he said, “do not be afraid.” And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but only Jesus. As they came down from the mountain Jesus gave them this order, “Tell no one about the vision until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”

As we receive these glorious mysteries, we make thanksgiving to you, O Lord, for allowing us while still on earth to be partakers even now of the things of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

Bless your faithful, we pray, O Lord, with a blessing that endures for ever, and keep them faithful to the Gospel of your Only Begotten Son, so that they may always desire and at last attain that glory whose beauty he showed in his own Body, to the amazement of his Apostles. Meditation
The Lord invites us this Sunday to step out of our comfort zone. He invites us to a commitment of faith. In the first reading, he asks Abram to leave the land of his fathers and let himself be led into an unknown land; in the second reading, he asks us not to be afraid of the service of proclaiming the Gospel and calls us to be witnesses of his love. But we find that we do not like to set out to do this. Like Peter in today’s Gospel, we often want to put up tents and sleep in our comfort zone. However, the Lord makes us understand that his glory is to be proclaimed after the resurrection. So we must first go through the Friday of the trial. On this Sunday, let us follow the example of the commitment of Abram, our father in faith. Let us trust in God, and we will never be disappointed.

Prince polonais, Casimir (1458-1484) fut surnommé ‘’frère et défenseur des pauvres’’. Âme très pure, il avait un ardent amour envers la Vierge Marie. Après une vie austère, il mourut de phtisie. Il est le patron de la Pologne et de la Lituanie.

1ère lecture : Dt 26, 16-19

Méditation Amis de Dieu, notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ nous invite, en ce jour, à la perfection dans notre façon d’aimer. Il nous appelle à pratiquer un amour sans couleur et sans odeur. Il s’agit pour nous de ne pas avoir de différence et de préférence dans notre rapport à l’autre. Notre amour à l’autre ne doit pas être conditionné, limité et freiné par les pesanteurs du jugement humain. Nous devons pratiquer un amour sans frontière. Comme Dieu aime tout le monde et fait pleuvoir ses grâces sur tous, nous devons apprendre à tourner le dos à tout esprit qui ternit l’image et la ressemblance de Dieu en nous et nous pousse au favoritisme, à l’égoïsme et au sectarisme. Que le Seigneur augmente en nous, en ce jour, cette grâce de l’amour sans réserve et sans limite qui, seul, nous permettra de tendre véritablement à la perfection de Dieu.

SAINT Casimir
He was the second son of King Casimir IV of Poland. He assiduously cultivated the Christian virtues, especially chastity and generosity to the poor. He died of tuberculosis on 4 March 1484. .

Meditation
Friends of God, today our Lord Jesus Christ invites us to perfection in the way we love. He calls us to practise love without colour or smell. This means having no difference and no preference in our relationships with the others. Our love for the other must not be conditioned, limited and held back by the weight of human judgement. We must practice love without borders. As God loves everyone and showers his graces on all, we must learn to turn our backs on every spirit that tarnishes the image and likeness of God in us. We must turn away from all that leads us to favouritism, selfishness and bigotry. May the Lord increase in us the grace of unreserved and boundless love that will truly enable us to strive for God’s perfection.

Il était évêque de Magydos, dans le sud de l’actuelle Turquie, quand éclata la persécution de Dèce. Nombreux furent alors les chrétiens qui apostasièrent pour sauver leur vie. Craignant que ses fidèles n’en fassent autant, il leur conseilla des fuir et lui-même se laissa arrêter. Conduit devant le gouverneur, il fut condamné à mourir, comme son maître, par crucifixion

1ère lecture : Ezéchiel 18, 21-28
Ainsi parle le Seigneur Dieu : Si le méchant se détourne de tous les péchés qu’il a commis, s’il observe tous mes décrets, s’il pratique le droit et la justice, c’est certain, il vivra, il ne mourra pas. On ne se souviendra d’aucun des crimes qu’il a commis, il vivra à cause de la justice qu’il a pratiquée. Prendrais-je donc plaisir à la mort du méchant – oracle du Seigneur Dieu –, et non pas plutôt à ce qu’il se détourne de sa conduite et qu’il vive ? Mais le juste, s’il se détourne de sa justice et fait le mal en imitant toutes les abominations du méchant, il le ferait et il vivrait ? Toute la justice qu’il avait pratiquée, on ne s’en souviendra plus : à cause de son infidélité et de son péché, il mourra ! Et pourtant vous dites : « La conduite du Seigneur n’est pas la bonne. » Écoutez donc, fils d’Israël: est-ce ma conduite qui n’est pas la bonne ? N’est-ce pas plutôt la vôtre? Si le juste se détourne de sa justice, commet le mal, et meurt dans cet état, c’est à cause de son mal qu’il mourra. Si le méchant se détourne de sa méchanceté pour pratiquer le droit et la justice, il sauvera sa vie. Il a ouvert les yeux et s’est détourné de ses crimes. C’est certain, il vivra, il ne mourra pas.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Je vous le dis : Si votre justice ne surpasse pas celle des scribes et des pharisiens, vous n’entrerez pas dans le royaume des Cieux. Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre, et si quelqu’un commet un meurtre, il devra passer en jugement. Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis : Tout homme qui se met en colère contre son frère devra passer en jugement. Si quelqu’un insulte son frère, il devra passer devant le tribunal. Si quelqu’un le traite de fou, il sera passible de la géhenne de feu. Donc, lorsque tu vas présenter ton offrande à l’autel, si, là, tu te souviens que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi, laisse ton offrande, là, devant l’autel, va d’abord te réconcilier avec ton frère, et ensuite viens présenter ton offrande. Mets-toi vite d’accord avec ton adversaire pendant que tu es en chemin avec lui, pour éviter que ton adversaire ne te livre au juge, le juge au garde, et qu’on ne te jette en prison. Amen, je te le dis: tu n’en sortiras pas avant d’avoir payé jusqu’au dernier sou. ».

Méditation
Le prophète Ezéchiel te fait comprendre dans la première lecture de ce jour que tu es appelé à persévérer sur le chemin du Bien. C’est ce que Dieu attend de toi. Le chemin de la vie exige de toi la vigilance pour ne pas perdre le cap de la route qui mène au ciel. Beaucoup de personnes, en effet, ont bien commencé leur vie et l’ont mal fini parce qu’ils se sont détournés du droit chemin. D’autres, en revanche, se sont ressaisis après avoir mal commencé et ont ainsi gagné le ticket du ciel. Pour cela, Jésus te demande, dans l’Evangile de ce jour, de soigner les relations que tu entretiens avec tes semblables. Ta pratique de la charité et de la justice doit dépasser celle des scribes et des pharisiens, car, une petite colère, une simple insulte ou le mépris de l’autre peuvent te faire perdre le ciel. Puisses-tu donc, en ce jour, réviser la façon dont tu traites les autres et gagner ton ciel.

SAINT Katharine Drexel
She was born in Philadelphia to a rich banking family. In 1889, at the age of 33, she founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, dedicated to mission work among Indians and black people.

But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother ‘Fool’, he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him ‘Renegade’, he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are still on the way to the court with him, or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. I tell you solemnly, you will not get out till you have paid the last penny.”

Meditation
The prophet Ezekiel makes you understand your call to persevere on the path of goodness in today’s first reading. The path of life requires you to be vigilant so that you do not lose your way on the road to Heaven. Many people have begun their lives well and ended them badly because they have turned away from the right path. On the other hand, others have recovered after a bad start and have thus earned a ticket to Heaven. For this reason, Jesus asks you in today’s Gospel to take care of your relationship with your fellow human beings. Your practice of charity and justice must go beyond that of the Scribes and Pharisees because a bit of anger, a simple insult or contempt for others can cost you Heaven. Review the way you treat others today in order to gain Heaven.

Bienheureux Charles le Bon
Homme pénétré de l’amour de Dieu et fils du roi Knut IV (saint Canut du Danemark), il participa à la première croisade. A son retour, il devint comte des Flandres, de Picardie et d’Artois. Sa bonté lui fit des amis chez les pauvres et sa justice lui attira la haine des grands de ce monde qui l’assassinèrent pendant la messe dans l’Eglise Saint-Donatien de Bruges. Son culte fut confirmé en 1883.

Viens à mon secours car je suis seule, et je n’ai pas d’autre défenseur que toi, Seigneur. Car je vais jouer avec le danger. Dans les livres de mes ancêtres, Seigneur, j’ai appris que ceux qui te plaisent, tu les libères pour toujours, Seigneur. Et maintenant, aide- moi, car je suis solitaire et je n’ai que toi, Seigneur mon Dieu. Méditation
L’évangile de ce jour nous montre comment doit être la prière du disciple de Jésus-Christ. Trois attitudes spirituelles doivent toujours conduire la démarche intérieure de l’orant : demandez, cherchez et frappez, tous des verbes d’action. Ces attitudes ne seront possibles qu’avec le concours de trois vertus capitales. “Demandez” suppose de reconnaitre notre indigence. Pour demander il faut faire preuve d’humilité, d’abaissement, bref de la mort de son ego pour se libérer de la dictature du sentiment de suffisance. La deuxième vertu qui va de pair avec le fait de “chercher” est la persévérance malgré les obstacles dressés sur le chemin de la quête. Quant à la troisième vertu : la confiance, qui accompagne le fait de “ frappez”. Elle doit toujours habiter le disciple du Christ afin de savoir sans cesse oser et de ne jamais s’abandonner au découragement.

SAINT CHAD
Chad was born in Northumbria, one of four brothers, all of whom became priests. He was educated under St Aidan and partly in Ireland. Chad was outstanding for his humility and simplicity of life. He died of the plague on 2 March 672.

Meditation
Today’s Gospel shows us how the prayer of the disciple of Jesus Christ should be. Three spiritual attitudes must always lead the inner process of the speaker: ask, search and knock, all verbs of action. These attitudes will only be possible with the help of three crucial virtues. “To Ask” implies recognizing our insufficiency. To ask requires humility, abasement, the death of the ego to free oneself from the dictatorship of the feeling of sufficiency. The second virtue that goes hand in hand with “seeking” is perseverance, despite the obstacles in the way of the request. The third virtue that accompanies “knocking” is trust. It must always be present in the disciple of Christ so that he is daring and never give in to discouragement.

Saint Aubin d’Angers
Originaire de Vannes en Bretagne, il devint évêque d’Angers dont il est le patron céleste. Il sut se dresser devant l’injustice pour adoucir le sort des prisonniers et des malheureux. Alors que beaucoup d’évêques se taisaient par crainte, il sut imposer le respect du mariage aux grands seigneurs qui, à l’époque mérovingienne, n’hésitaient pas à épouser leurs propres sœurs ou leurs propres filles.

Rappelle-toi, Seigneur, les tendresses, l’amitié, que tu nous as montrées depuis toujours. Que jamais le mal n’ait raison de nous ; délivre-nous de toutes nos angoisses.

Regarde, Seigneur, avec bienveillance ton peuple qui cherche à mieux te servir : tandis qu’en nous imposant des privations nous maîtrisons notre corps, permets qu’en agissant selon le bien, nous obtenions un esprit nouveau. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Jonas 3, 1-10
La parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jonas : « Lève- toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville païenne, proclame le message que je te donne sur elle.» Jonas se leva et partit pour Ninive, selon la parole du Seigneur. Or, Ninive était une ville extraordinairement grande : il fallait trois jours pour la traverser. Jonas la parcourut une journée à peine en proclamant : « Encore quarante jours, et Ninive sera détruite ! » Aussitôt, les gens de Ninive crurent en Dieu. Ils annoncèrent un jeûne, et tous, du plus grand au plus petit, se vêtirent de toile à sac. La chose arriva jusqu’au roi de Ninive. Il se leva de son trône, quitta son manteau, se couvrit d’une toile à sac, et s’assit sur la cendre. Puis il fit crier dans Ninive ce décret du roi et de ses grands : « Hommes et bêtes, gros et petit bétail, ne goûteront à rien, ne mangeront pas et ne boiront pas. Hommes et bêtes, on se couvrira de toile à sac, on criera vers Dieu de toute sa force, chacun se détournera de sa conduite mauvaise et de ses actes de violence. Qui sait si Dieu ne se ravisera pas et ne se repentira pas, s’il ne reviendra pas de l’ardeur de sa colère ? Et alors nous ne périrons pas ! En voyant leur réaction, et comment ils se détournaient de leur conduite mauvaise, Dieu renonça au châtiment dont il les avait menacés.

R/ Tu ne repousses pas, ô mon Dieu, un cœur brisé et broyé.

Car Jonas a été un signe pour les habitants de Ninive ; il en sera de même avec le Fils de l’homme pour cette génération. Lors du Jugement, la reine de Saba se dressera en même temps que les hommes de cette génération, et elle les condamnera. En effet, elle est venue des extrémités de la terre pour écouter la sagesse de Salomon, et il y a ici bien plus que Salomon. Lors du Jugement, les habitants de Ninive se lèveront en même temps que cette génération, et ils la condamneront ; en effet, ils se sont convertis en réponse à la proclamation faite par Jonas, et il y a ici bien plus que Jonas. »

Bienaimé de Dieu, sais-tu encore reconnaitre les signes et les appels de Dieu dans ta vie ? Chaque jour, Dieu te parle. Dieu t’invite à ouvrir ton cœur à l’écoute de sa parole. Dieu t’invite à la conversion de vie. Jonas a été un signe pour la conversion du peuple de Ninive. Ce peuple a su être attentif à ce signe et s’est converti à l’écoute de sa parole de conversion. Aujourd’hui ce ne sont pas des Jonas qui te manquent pour te convertir, car Jésus te fait comprendre dans l’Evangile de ce jour qu’il y a autour de toi des prophètes plus grands que Jonas. Alors qu’est-ce que tu attends pour ouvrir ton cœur et tourner le dos à la vie mauvaise qui t’expose à la colère de Dieu? Combien de temps vas-tu continuer à résister à la voix de l’amour et du bien ? Puisse le Seigneur en ce jour t’accorder la grâce de la véritable conversion de cœur et de vie.

The earliest life of St David dates from five centuries after his death in 589. He became abbot and bishop at Mynyw. He is credited with a monastic rule and also with a Penitentiary.

First Reading: Jonah 3: 1-10
The word of the Lord was addressed a second time to Jonah: “Up!” he said. “Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to them as I told you to.” Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was a city great beyond compare: it took three days to cross it. Jonah went on into the city, making a day’s journey. He preached in these words, “Only forty days more and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.” And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least. The news reached the king of Nineveh, who rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth and sat down in ashes. A proclamation was then promulgated throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his ministers, as follows: “Men and beasts, herds and flocks, are to taste nothing; they must not eat, they must not drink water. All are to put on sackcloth and call on God with all their might; and let everyone renounce his evil behaviour and the wicked things he has done. Who knows if God will not change his mind and relent, if he will not renounce his burning wrath, so that we do not perish?” God saw their efforts to renounce their evil behaviour, and God relented: he did not inflict on them the disaster which he had threatened.

Meditation
Beloved of God, do you still recognize the signs and calls of God in your life? God speaks to you every day. God invites you to open your heart to his word. God invites you to transform your life. Jonah was a sign for the conversion of the people of Nineveh. The Ninevites who listened to his preaching on repentance were converted. Today you do not lack Jonahs to convert you because Jesus makes you understand in today’s Gospel that there are greater prophets around you than Jonah. So, what are you waiting for to open your heart and turn your back on the evil life that exposes you to the wrath of God? How long will you continue to resist the voice of love and goodness? May the Lord grant you the grace of true conversion of heart and life on this day.

SAINT Romain
Doux et indulgent, Romain avait trente cinq ans lorsqu’il quitta son Bugey natal, n’emportant avec lui que « la vie des Pères du Désert». Il prit son chemin vers l’Est, traversa de grandes forêts et finit par atteindre la Bienne. Il venait de trouver ce qui lui convenait: de la terre labourable, une fontaine, des arbres et du silence. Il vécut là quelques années comme s’il était dans le désert égyptien de la Thébaïde.

D’âge en âge, tu as été notre refuge, Seigneur, depuis toujours et pour toujours, tu es Dieu.

Méditation
La parole de Dieu, qui jamais ne lui retourne sans avoir accompli ce qu’il dit, inspire et enrichit nos prières. Pas besoin de rabâcher en priant, de peur d’être absents de nos paroles. En nous enseignant la prière type du Pater (Notre Père), Jésus nous apprend à prier Dieu avec un esprit filial, c’est-à-dire avec l’amour, la spontanéité, le sans-gêne, la confiance, la simplicité, l’humilité et la docilité d’un enfant. Il nous apprend à parler intimement à Dieu comme un enfant parle à son papa. Aussi nous apprend-il à prier avec un esprit fraternel, c’est-à-dire avec des sentiments fraternels portés à tous les hommes. C’est dire donc qu’en faisant cette prière, nous devons tous nous considérer et vivre comme des fils et des filles d’un même Père, unis dans la paix et l’amour. Au bout du compte, le Pater nous engage à : bénir et aimer le Nom de Dieu, le faisant connaître et aimer, avec cette soumission à sa volonté qui fait advenir son règne. Un règne de vie où tous ont à manger ; de réconciliation où on se pardonne ; d’amour où le mal disparaît.
