Bakanja

 

Béatifié le 24 avril 1994 pendant le premier Synode des évêques pour l’Afrique, Isidore Bakanja était catéchumène chez les pères Trappistes, à Mbandaka, au Zaïre, actuel Congo démocratique. Répugnant sa dévotion profonde au Christ le patron dont il était le domestique le fit battre à mort. Âgé de 29 ans, il rendit l’âme le 12 août 1909.

Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, toi que nous pouvons déjà appeler notre Père, Fais grandir en nos cœurs l’esprit filial, afin que nous soyons capables d’entrer un jour dans l’héritage qui nous est promis. Par Jésus Christ.

 

1ère lecture : Ez 16,1-15.59-60.63

La parole du Seigneur me fut adressée : « Fils d’homme, fais connaître à Jérusalem ses abominations. Tu diras : Ainsi parle le Seigneur Dieu à Jérusalem : Par tes origines et ta naissance, tu es du pays de Canaan. Ton père était un Amorite, et ta mère, une Hittite. À ta naissance, le jour où tu es née, on ne t’a pas coupé le cordon, on ne t’a pas plongée dans l’eau pour te nettoyer, on ne t’a pas frottée de sel, ni enveloppée de langes. Aucun regard de pitié pour toi, personne pour te donner le moindre de ces soins, par compassion. On t’a jetée en plein champ, avec dégoût, le jour de ta naissance. Je suis passé près de toi, et je t’ai vue te débattre dans ton sang. Quand tu étais dans ton sang, je t’ai dit : “Je veux que tu vives !” Je t’ai fait croître comme l’herbe des champs. Tu as poussé, tu as grandi, tu es devenue femme, ta poitrine s’est formée, ta chevelure s’est développée. Mais tu étais complètement nue. Je suis passé près de toi, et je t’ai vue : tu avais atteint l’âge des amours. J’étendis sur toi le pan de mon manteau et je couvris ta nudité. Je me suis engagé envers toi par serment, je suis entré en alliance avec toi – oracle du Seigneur Dieu – et tu as été à moi. Je t’ai plongée dans l’eau, je t’ai nettoyée de ton sang, je t’ai parfumée avec de l’huile. Je t’ai revêtue d’habits chamarrés, je t’ai chaussée de souliers en cuir fin, je t’ai donné une ceinture de lin précieux, je t’ai couverte de soie. Je t’ai parée de joyaux : des bracelets à tes poignets, un collier à ton cou, un anneau à ton nez, des boucles à tes oreilles, et sur ta tête un diadème magnifique. Tu étais parée d’or et d’argent, vêtue de lin précieux, de soie et d’étoffes chamarrées. La fleur de farine, le miel et l’huile étaient ta nourriture. Tu devins de plus en plus belle et digne de la royauté. Ta renommée se répandit parmi les nations, à cause de ta beauté, car elle était parfaite, grâce à ma splendeur dont je t’avais revêtue – oracle du Seigneur Dieu. Mais tu t’es fiée à ta beauté, tu t’es prostituée en usant de ta renommée, tu as prodigué tes faveurs à tout passant : tu as été à n’importe qui. Car ainsi parle le Seigneur Dieu : Je vais agir avec toi comme tu as agi, toi qui as méprisé le serment et rompu l’alliance. Cependant, moi, je me ressouviendrai de mon alliance, celle que j’ai conclue avec toi au temps de ta jeunesse, et j’établirai pour toi une alliance éternelle. Ainsi tu te souviendras, tu seras couverte de honte. Dans ton déshonneur, tu n’oseras pas ouvrir la bouche quand je te pardonnerai tout ce que tu as fait – oracle du Seigneur Dieu. »

 

Cantique : Is 12,2.4-6

R/   Seigneur, tu reviens de ta fureur et tu me consoles

 

  1. Voici le Dieu qui me sauve : j’ai confiance, je n’ai plus de crainte. Ma force et mon chant, c’est le Seigneur ; il est pour moi le salut.
  2. Ce jour-là, vous direz : « Rendez grâce au Seigneur, proclamez son nom, annoncez parmi les peuples ses hauts faits ! » Redites-le : « Sublime est son nom ! » Jouez pour le Seigneur !
  3. Il montre sa magnificence, et toute la terre le sait. Jubilez, criez de joie, habitants de Sion, car il est grand au milieu de toi, le Saint d’Israël !

Évangile : Mt 19, 3-12

En ce temps-là, des pharisiens s’approchèrent de Jésus pour le mettre à l’épreuve ;ils lui demandèrent : « Est-il permis à un homme de renvoyer sa femme pour n’importe quel motif ? » Il répondit : « N’avez-vous pas lu ceci ? Dès le commencement, le Créateur les fit homme et femme ? et dit : “À cause de cela, l’homme quittera son père et sa mère, il s’attachera à sa femme, et tous deux deviendront une seule chair.”  Ainsi, ils ne sont plus deux, mais une seule chair. Donc, ce que Dieu a uni, que l’homme ne le sépare pas ! »  Les pharisiens lui répliquent : « Pourquoi donc Moïse a-t-il prescrit la remise d’un acte de divorce avant la répudiation?»  Jésus leur répond : « C’est en raison de la dureté de votre cœur que Moïse vous a permis de renvoyer vos femmes. Mais au commencement, il n’en était pas ainsi.   Or je vous le dis :si quelqu’un renvoie sa femme– sauf en cas d’union illégitime–et qu’il en épouse une autre, il est adultère. »  Ses disciples lui disent: « Si telle est la situation de l’homme par rapport à sa femme, mieux vaut ne pas se marier. » Il leur répondit : « Tous ne comprennent pas cette parole, mais seulement ceux à qui cela est donné. Il y a des gens qui ne se marient pas car, de naissance, ils en sont incapables ; il y en a qui ne peuvent pas se marier car ils ont été mutilés par les hommes ; il y en a qui ont choisi de ne pas se marier à cause du royaume des Cieux. Celui qui peut comprendre, qu’il comprenne!»

 

Prière  sur  les  offrandes

Seigneur, tu as donné ces présents à ton Église pour qu’elle puisse te les offrir. Daigne les accueillir favorablement, qu’ils deviennent, par ta puissance, le sacrement de notre salut. Par Jésus.

Glorifie le Seigneur, Jérusalem, il te nourrit de la fleur du froment.

Que cette communion à ton sacrement, Seigneur, soit notre délivrance et nous enracine dans ta vérité. Par Jésus.

 

 

Méditation

Est-il permis à un homme de renvoyer sa femme pour n’importe quel motif ? » A cette question égoïste posée par les pharisiens, le Christ nous présente la Loi nouvelle : Aimons-nous les uns les autres… Quelle que soit notre situation, ce qui nous est demandé est d’aimer, d’être ouverts à nos frères et de marcher humblement avec eux vers la vie, à la suite du Christ Jésus. Exprimer dans notre être le mystère que nous vivons, exalter cette vie que nous recevons de Dieu Notre Père… Au soir de notre vie, nous serons jugés sur l’amour.

Gospel : Matthew 19:3-12

Some Pharisees approached Jesus, and to test him they said, ‘Is it against the Law for a man to divorce his wife on any pretext whatever?’ He answered, ‘Have you not read that the creator from the beginning made them male and female and that he said: This is why a man must leave father and mother, and cling to his wife, and the two become one body? They are no longer two, therefore, but one body. So then, what God has united, man must not divide.’ They said to him, ‘Then why did Moses command that a writ of dismissal should be given in cases of divorce?’ ‘It was because you were so unteachable’ he said ‘that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but it was not like this from the beginning. Now I say this to you: the man who divorces his wife – I am not speaking of fornication – and marries another, is guilty of adultery.’ The disciples said to him, ‘If that is how things are between husband and wife, it is not advisable to marry.’ But he replied, ‘It is not everyone who can accept what I have said, but only those to whom it is granted. There are eunuchs born that way from their mother’s womb, there are eunuchs made so by men and there are eunuchs who have made themselves that way for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.’

 

 

Prayer over the Offerings

Be pleased, O Lord, to accept the offerings of your Church, for in your mercy you have given them to be offered and by your power you transform them into the mystery of our salvation. Through Christ our Lord.

May the communion in your Sacrament that we have consumed, save us, O Lord, and confirm us in the light of your truth. Through Christ our Lord.

 

 

Meditation

Celibacy “for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” is a mystery that is not too easy for the people of our time to understand. Those who achieve it are those “to whom God has revealed it”. This is a revelation that is necessarily intimate and profound. However, the fact that some are chosen does not mean that others are excluded. God calls each one according to what is good for that person. Christ also adapts the radicality of his discourse to his interlocutors. To the Pharisees who questioned Him about repudiation, he reminded them of the indissolubility of marriage. Only to His disciples does he then propose the contemplation of another radical way of life, that of celibacy. Later, He takes the trouble to differentiate between those who “cannot” marry and those who decide not to. Thus Christ makes celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom a vocation in its own right, not a second-best option.

St. Clare

(1193/4 – 1253)

 

She was born at Assisi and came under the influence of Saint Francis. She left home at the age of 18 and, under Francis’s guidance, began a community that grew to become the order of the Poor Clares. Clare was a noted contemplative and a caring mother to her nuns. She died at Assisi in 1253.

 

Entrance Antiphon : Cf. Ps 148:12-14

Let the virgins praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his splendour is above heaven and earth.

 

Collect

O God, who in your mercy, led Saint Clare to a love of poverty; grant, through her intercession, that, following Christ in poverty of spirit, we may merit to contemplate you one day in the heavenly Kingdom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

R/   Never forget the deeds of the Lord.

 

  1. They put God to the proof and defied him; they refused to obey the Most High. They strayed, as faithless as their fathers, like a bow on which the archer cannot count.
  2. With their mountain shrines they angered him; made him jealous with the idols they served. God saw this and was filled with fury: he utterly rejected Israel.
  3. He gave his ark into captivity, his glorious ark into the hands of the foe. He gave up his people to the sword, in his anger against his chosen ones.

Gospel : Matthew 18:21-19:1

Peter went up to Jesus and said, ‘Lord, how often must I forgive my brother if he wrongs me? As often as seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘Not seven, I tell you, but seventy-seven times. ‘And so the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who decided to settle his accounts with his servants. When the reckoning began, they brought him a man who owed ten thousand talents; but he had no means of paying, so his master gave orders that he should be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, to meet the debt. At this, the servant threw himself down at his master’s feet. “Give me time” he said “and I will pay the whole sum.” And the servant’s master felt so sorry for him that he let him go and cancelled the debt. Now as this servant went out, he happened to meet a fellow servant who owed him one hundred denarii; and he seized him by the throat and began to throttle him. “Pay what you owe me” he said. His fellow servant fell at his feet and implored him, saying, “Give me time and I will pay you.” But the other would not agree; on the contrary, he had him thrown into prison till he should pay the debt. His fellow servants were deeply distressed when they saw what had happened, and they went to their master and reported the whole affair to him. Then the master sent for him. “You wicked servant,” he said “I cancelled all that debt of yours when you appealed to me. Were you not bound, then, to have pity on your fellow servant just as I had pity on you?” And in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers till he should pay all his debt. And that is how my heavenly Father will deal with you unless you each forgive your brother from your heart.’  Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and he left Galilee and came into the part of Judaea which is on the far side of the Jordan.

 

Prayer over the Offerings

As we proclaim your wonders, O Lord, in the commemoration of the holy Virgin St. Clare, we bring you these offerings and prayers; grant, we ask, that, as her merits are pleasing to you, so, too, our dutiful service may find favour in your sight. Through Christ our Lord.

The bridegroom has come, and the virgins who were ready have gone with him into the wedding feast.

 

Prayer after Communion

May the mysteries we have received, O Lord, on this feast day of the Virgin St. Clare constantly bestir and enlighten us, we pray, so that we may stand ready for the coming of your Son and be admitted to his wedding feast on high. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Meditation

Our refusal to forgive our neighbours shows above all that we do not measure the weight of the forgiveness we have received from God. If I do not forgive others their faults, it is because I have not understood how serious my own faults are before God and how much I myself have been forgiven. This is the main theme of the Gospel parable. We must forgive because we have been forgiven so much ourselves. We have no right to hold on to our bitterness, resentment and anger against our brother because God has not held on to his anger against us. Forgiveness comes from love – God’s love for us, our love for others. The servant who does not understand this will pay dearly for his lack of understanding.

Ste Claire, vierge

 

Touchée par l’exemple du Poverello, une jeune fille d’Assise offrit au Christ la fraîcheur de ses dix-huit ans et se confia à saint François, le dimanche des Rameaux 1212. Ce fut l’origine du second ordre franciscain, celui des Pauvres Dames ou Clarisses. Sœur Claire (1193-1253) allait diriger pendant quarante-deux ans le couvent de Saint-Damien à Assise, le premier de l’Ordre.

Tu sortiras ton sac, comme un sac d’exilé, en plein jour, sous leurs yeux. Toi-même, tu sortiras le soir, sous leurs yeux, comme s’en vont les exilés. Sous leurs yeux, tu feras un trou dans le mur,  et tu sortiras par là. Sous leurs yeux, tu chargeras ton sac sur ton épaule,  et tu le sortiras dans l’obscurité ; tu voileras ton visage, et tu ne verras plus le pays : j’ai fait de toi un signe pour la maison d’Israël.» Je fis ce qui m’avait été ordonné: en plein jour, je sortis mon sac, comme un sac d’exilé ; puis le soir, je fis un trou dans le mur, à la main; je sortis mon sac dans l’obscurité, et sous leurs yeux je le chargeai sur mon épaule. Au matin, la parole du Seigneur me fut adressée : « Fils d’homme, la maison d’Israël, cette engeance de rebelles, t’a bien demandé : “Qu’est-ce que tu fais là?” Réponds: “Ainsi parle le Seigneur Dieu : Cet oracle concerne le prince qui est à Jérusalem et toute la maison d’Israël qui s’y trouve.” Tu diras : “Je suis pour vous un signe. Ce que j’ai fait, c’est cela même qui leur sera fait : ils partiront en exil, en captivité; le prince qui est au milieu d’eux chargera son sac sur son épaule, il sortira dans l’obscurité; on percera le mur pour le faire sortir ; il voilera son visage, si bien qu’il ne verra plus de ses yeux le pays.” »

R/   N’oubliez pas les exploits du Seigneur !

 

  1. Nos pères ont tenté le Dieu Très-Haut, ils refusaient d’observer ses lois; ils déviaient comme leurs pères, ils désertaient, trahissaient comme un arc infidèle.
  2. Leurs hauts lieux le provoquaient, leurs idoles excitaient sa jalousie. Dieu a entendu, il s’emporte, il écarte tout à fait Israël.
  3. Il laisse capturer sa gloire, et sa puissance par des mains ennemies. Il livre son peuple à l’épée, contre son héritage, il s’emporte.

 

Acclamation

Alléluia. Alléluia! Pour ton serviteur, que ton visage s’illumine : apprends-moi tes commandements. Alléluia! (Ps 118, 135)

 

Évangile : Mt 18, 21 – 19, 1

En ce temps-là, Pierre s’approcha de Jésus pour lui demander : « Seigneur, lorsque mon frère  commettra des fautes contre moi, combien de fois dois-je lui pardonner ? Jusqu’à sept fois ? » Jésus lui répondit : « Je ne te dis pas jusqu’à sept fois, mais jusqu’à 70 fois sept fois. Ainsi, le royaume des Cieux est comparable à un roi qui voulut régler ses comptes avec ses serviteurs. Il commençait, quand on lui amena quelqu’un qui lui devait dix mille talents (c’est-à-dire soixante millions de pièces d’argent). Comme cet homme n’avait pas de quoi rembourser, le maître ordonna de le vendre, avec sa femme, ses enfants et tous ses biens, en remboursement de sa dette. Alors, tombant à ses pieds, le serviteur demeurait prosterné et disait : “Prends patience envers moi, et je te rembourserai tout.” Saisi de compassion, le maître de ce serviteur le laissa partir et lui remit sa dette. Mais, en sortant, ce  serviteur trouva un de ses compagnons qui lui devait cent pièces d’argent. Il se jeta sur lui pour l’étrangler, en disant : “Rembourse ta dette !” Alors, tombant à ses pieds, son compagnon le suppliait : “Prends patience envers moi, et je te rembourserai.” Mais l’autre refusa et le fit jeter en prison jusqu’à ce qu’il ait remboursé ce qu’il devait. Ses compagnons, voyant cela, furent profondément attristés et allèrent raconter à leur maître tout ce qui s’était passé. Alors celui-ci le fit appeler et lui dit : “Serviteur mauvais ! je t’avais remis toute cette dette parce que tu m’avais supplié. Ne devais-tu pas, à ton tour, avoir pitié de ton compagnon, comme moi-même j’avais eu pitié de toi ?” Dans sa colère, son maître le livra aux bourreaux jusqu’à ce qu’il eût remboursé tout ce qu’il devait. C’est ainsi que mon Père du ciel vous traitera, si chacun de vous ne pardonne pas à son frère du fond du cœur. » Lorsque Jésus eut terminé ce discours, il s’éloigna de la Galilée et se rendit dans le territoire de la Judée, au-delà du Jourdain.

Méditation

Peut-on être chrétien sans pardonner ou demander pardon ? Si l’on en croit les versets 17 et 34, rien n’est sûr ! Le Christ nous dit aujourd’hui que le pardon est un processus complexe, parfois long, qui demande des efforts de communication, de compréhension de soi et de l’autre car « le cœur de l’homme est tortueux par-dessus tout » (Jérémie 17.9).

St Laurent,

diacre et martyr

 

Le diacre Laurent fut arrêté lors de la persécution de Valérien et mourut par le feu peu de jours après le pape Sixte II, exécuté en 258. D’après le récit de son martyre, Laurent, intendant des biens de l’Église, n’aurait pas trouvé meilleur moyen pour les préserver de la rapacité des persécuteurs, que de les distribuer aux pauvres ; il aurait été brûlé sur un lit de fer en forme de gril.

Au service de l’Église, le diacre saint Laurent s’est offert lui-même; il fut digne de souffrir le martyre et de rejoindre dans la joie le Seigneur Jésus Christ.

 

Prière  d’ouverture

C’est l’ardeur de ton amour, Seigneur, qui a donné au diacre saint Laurent de se montrer fidèle dans son service, et d’accéder à la gloire du martyre ; accorde-nous d’aimer ce qu’il aimait, et d’accomplir ce qu’il a enseigné. Par Jésus.

 

1ère lecture : 2 Cor 9, 6-10

Frères, rappelez-vous le proverbe : À semer trop peu, on récolte trop peu ; à semer largement, on récolte largement. Que chacun donne comme il a décidé dans son cœur, sans regret et sans contrainte, car Dieu aime celui qui donne joyeusement. Et Dieu est assez puissant pour vous donner toute grâce en abondance, afin que vous ayez, en toute chose et toujours, tout ce qu’il vous faut, et même que vous ayez en abondance de quoi faire toute sorte de bien. L’Écriture  dit en effet de l’homme juste : Il distribue, il donne aux pauvres ; sa justice demeure à jamais. Dieu, qui fournit la semence au semeur et le pain pour la nourriture, vous fournira la graine ; il la multipliera, il donnera la croissance à ce que vous accomplirez dans la justice.

  1. Heureux qui craint le Seigneur, qui aime entièrement sa volonté! Sa lignée sera puissante sur la terre; la race des justes est bénie.
  2. L’homme de bien a pitié, il partage; il mène ses affaires avec droiture. Cet homme jamais ne tombera ; toujours on fera mémoire du juste.

Méditation

Selon le catéchisme de l’Eglise Catholique, le fruit de l’arbre de la croix est la vie surnaturelle. Le Christ nous l’explique à travers l’image du grain de blé qui meurt en terre et qui néanmoins porte du fruit en abondance, et saint Paul en est le brillant exemple d’un disciple du Christ qui a donné sa vie pour lui. Il nous dit : Le travail, j’en ai fait beaucoup plus ; les prisons, j’y ai été davantage ; les coups reçus : Sans comparaison et bien de fois j’ai frôlé la mort. Cinq fois les juifs m’ont fait donné les 39 coups de fouet ; trois fois j’ai reçu la bastonnade, une fois j’ai été lapidé ; trois fois j’ai fait naufrage, et j’ai surnagé un jour et une nuit entière. J’ai accumulé les fatigues du voyage, avec rivières dangereuses et périls des bandits avec les complots de mes compatriotes aussi bien que les païens. Périls dans les cités, périls dans la solitude, périls sur mer, périls au milieu des faux frères. J’ai connu le travail et l’épuisement, les veilles fréquentes, la faim et la soif, les jeunes repérés, le froid et le manque de vêtements (2Co 11, 24-27). En cela, Paul est mort pour porter du fruit en abondance. Et nous, comment mourrons-nous dans le Christ ?

Look upon the offerings of the Church, O Lord, as she makes her prayer to you, and grant that, when consumed by those who believe, they may bring ever greater holiness. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

Today’s gospel invites us to make ourselves neighbours to others, especially those in need. The Commandments of God simply say, love of God and neighbour. When we are really moved by love, we shall certainly be neighbours to many, and cross many boundaries to be closer to those in need. It is this love that moved the Samaritan to stop and to help the man in need. The same love made him pay the bills and promised to take care of whatever might be necessary. His action is not just being charitable but a manifestation of unconditional love for neighbour.

Née dans le judaïsme, Edith Stein était professeur d’université à Wroclaw (Breslau) et elle se tourna progressivement vers le Christ. Au temps de l’invasion nazie et de la persécution des juifs, elle devint carmélite à Cologne, prenant le nom de Thérèse Bénédicte de La Croix. Elle fut martyrisée à Auschwitz.

Jésus illustre sa réponse en appelant vers lui un enfant. Comment donc, en devenant comme cet enfant, deviendrais-je le plus puissant dans le royaume des cieux ? Jésus nous le dit clairement : par une humilité véritable. Tout enfant sait qu’il dépend de ses parents. Le Seigneur nous le dit en ce jour, le premier pas dans notre sainteté personnelle est d’accepter humblement que nous dépendons totalement de Dieu. Sans Lui, nous n’existerions pas. Voilà le pas fondamental, et le premier, vers la véritable grandeur.

She was born Edith Stein into a Jewish family. She had a distinguished career as a philosopher and received a doctorate at Freiburg. She entered a Carmelite monastery in Cologne and took the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Teresa Benedicta was taken to Auschwitz and killed on 9 August 1942.

Meditation

Today, Jesus places before our eyes a little child, whose innocence we have to copy; someone who still presents the state in which our dignity as children of God, our deepest identity, is unblemished. We are all called to become the beloved sons of the Father. The Holy Spirit himself affirms in our minds that we are children of God. God, in his goodness, has willed it so. That is why it is necessary for us to become like little children: we must respond to the availability of God who gives himself eternally, with a commitment capable of welcoming this divine gift at every moment.

D’abord chanoine régulier d’Osma, Vieille Castille, Dominique de Guzman (1170-1221) découvre, au cours d’un voyage où il accompagne son évêque, les ravages faits par l’hérésie albigeoise dans le Midi de la France, et les vrais remèdes qu’il faudrait employer pour en délivrer l’Église.

Fêtons saint Dominique, ami de Dieu, dont la gloire fut de proclamer avec enthousiasme la vérité reçue du Seigneur.

 

Prière d’ouverture

Permets, Seigneur, que ton Église trouve un secours dans les mérites et les enseignements de saint Dominique : qu’il intercède pour nous avec toute sa tendresse, après avoir été un prédicateur éminent de ta vérité.

 

1ère lecture : Ez 1,2-6.24-28

Le cinq du mois, la cinquième année de la déportation du roi Jékonias, la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Ézékiel, fils du prêtre Bouzi, dans le pays des Chaldéens, au bord du fleuve Kebar. La main du Seigneur se posa sur lui. J’ai vu : un vent de tempête venant du nord, un gros nuage, un feu jaillissant et, autour, une clarté ; au milieu, comme un scintillement de vermeil du milieu du feu. Au milieu, la forme de quatre Vivants ; elle paraissait une forme humaine. Ils avaient chacun quatre faces et chacun quatre ailes. J’entendis le bruit de leurs ailes, pareil, quand ils marchaient, au bruit des grandes eaux, pareil à la voix du Puissant, une rumeur comme celle d’une armée. Lorsqu’ils s’arrêtaient, ils laissaient retomber leurs ailes. On entendit un bruit venant de plus haut que le firmament qui était au-dessus de leurs têtes. Au-dessus de ce firmament, il y avait une forme de trône, qui ressemblait à du saphir ; et, sur ce trône, quelqu’un qui avait l’aspect d’un être humain, au-dessus, tout en haut. Puis j’ai vu comme un scintillement de vermeil, comme l’aspect d’un feu qui l’enveloppait tout autour, à partir de ce qui semblait être ses reins et au-dessus. À partir de ce qui semblait être ses reins et au-dessous, j’ai vu comme l’aspect d’un feu et, autour, une clarté. Comme l’arc apparaît dans la nuée un jour de pluie, ainsi cette clarté à l’entour : c’était l’aspect, la forme de la gloire du Seigneur. À cette vue, je tombai face contre terre, et j’entendis une voix qui me parlait.

R/ Le ciel et la terre sont remplis de ta gloire, Alléluia !

 

  1. Louez le Seigneur du haut des cieux, louez-le dans les hauteurs. Vous, tous ses anges, louez-le, louez-le, tous les univers.

En ce temps-là, comme Jésus et les disciples étaient réunis en Galilée, il leur dit :  « Le Fils de l’homme va être livré aux mains des hommes;  ils le tueront et, le troisième jour, il ressuscitera. » Et ils furent profondément attristés. Comme ils arrivaient à Capharnaüm, ceux qui perçoivent la redevance des deux drachmes pour le Temple vinrent trouver Pierre et lui dirent: « Votre maître paye bien les deux drachmes, n’est-ce pas ?  Il répondit : « Oui. » Quand Pierre entra dans la maison, Jésus prit la parole le premier: « Simon, quel est ton avis ?Les rois de la terre, de qui perçoivent-ils les taxes ou l’impôt ? De leurs fils, ou des autres personnes ? » Pierre lui répondit: «Des autres. » Et Jésus reprit : « Donc, les fils sont libres. Méditation

Dans les textes de ce jour, nous découvrons une vision fondamentale de la vie chrétienne : l’ardeur que Jésus y met pour rester avec nous. Le Seigneur trouve sa joie dans les fils des hommes (Prov. 8,31). Frères et sœurs, cette réalité peut changer notre approche de la vie spirituelle sur laquelle nous ne plaçons souvent aucune attention, pendant que nous mettons beaucoup plus l’accent sur ce que nous faisons, comme si c’était cela le plus important ! Notre vie intérieure doit être centrée sur le Christ, son amour pour nous, son dévouement jusqu’à la mort, dans la recherche constante de notre amour.

Almighty ever-living God, whom, taught by the Holy Spirit, we dare to call our Father; bring, we pray, to perfection in our hearts, the spirit of adoption as your sons and daughters, that we may merit to enter into the inheritance which you have promised. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

 

First reading : Wisdom 18:6-9

That night had been foretold to our ancestors, so that, once they saw what kind of oaths they had put their trust in, they would joyfully take courage. This was the expectation of your people, the saving of the virtuous and the ruin of their enemies; for by the same act with which you took vengeance on our foes you made us glorious by calling us to you. The devout children of worthy men offered sacrifice in secret and this divine pact they struck with one accord: that the saints would share the same blessings and dangers alike; and forthwith they had begun to chant the hymns of the fathers.

 

Psalm 32(33):1,12,18-20,22

R/   Happy are the people the Lord has chosen as his own.

 

  1. Ring out your joy to the Lord, O you just; for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, the people he has chosen as his own.
  2. The Lord looks on those who revere him, on those who hope in his love, to rescue their souls from death, to keep them alive in famine.
  3. Our soul is waiting for the Lord. The Lord is our help and our shield. May your love be upon us, O Lord, as we place all our hope in you.

 

Second reading : Hebrews 11:1-2,8-19

Only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for, or prove the existence of the realities that at present remain unseen. It was for faith that our ancestors were commended. It was by faith that Abraham obeyed the call to set out for a country that was the inheritance given to him and his descendants, and that he set out without knowing where he was going. By faith he arrived, as a foreigner, in the Promised Land, and lived there as if in a strange country, with Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. They lived there in tents while he looked forward to a city founded, designed and built by God. It was equally by faith that Sarah, in spite of being past the age, was made able to conceive, because she believed that he who had made the promise would be faithful to it. Because of this, there came from one man, and one who was already as good as dead himself, more descendants than could be counted, as many as the stars of heaven or the grains of sand on the seashore. All these died in faith, before receiving any of the things that had been promised, but they saw them in the far distance and welcomed them, recognising that they were only strangers and nomads on earth. People who use such terms about themselves make it quite plain that they are in search of their real homeland. They can hardly have meant the country they came from, since they had the opportunity to go back to it; but in fact they were longing for a better homeland, their heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, since he has founded the city for them. It was by faith that Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac. He offered to sacrifice his only son even though the promises had been made to him and he had been told: It is through Isaac that your name will be carried on. He was confident that God had the power even to raise the dead; and so, figuratively speaking, he was given back Isaac from the dead.

 

 

Gospel Acclamation : Mt11:25

Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed are you, Father,  Lord of heaven and earth, for revealing the mysteries of the kingdom to mere children. Alleluia!

 

Gospel : Luke 12:32-48

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘There is no need to be afraid, little flock, for it has pleased your Father to give you the kingdom. ‘Sell your possessions and give alms. Get yourselves purses that do not wear out, treasure that will not fail you, in heaven where no thief can reach it and no moth destroy it. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.  ‘See that you are dressed for action and have your lamps lit. Be like men waiting for their master to return from the wedding feast, ready to open the door as soon as he comes and knocks. Happy those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. I tell you solemnly, he will put on an apron, sit them down at table and wait on them. It may be in the second watch he comes, or in the third, but happy those servants if he finds them ready. You may be quite sure of this, that if the householder had known at what hour the burglar would come, he would not have let anyone break through the wall of his house. You too must stand ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.’  Peter said, ‘Lord, do you mean this parable for us, or for everyone?’ The Lord replied, ‘What sort of steward, then, is faithful and wise enough for the master to place him over his household to give them their allowance of food at the proper time? Happy that servant if his master’s arrival finds him at this employment. I tell you truly, he will place him over everything he owns. But as for the servant who says to himself, “My master is taking his time coming,” and sets about beating the menservants and the maids, and eating and drinking and getting drunk, his master will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know. The master will cut him off and send him to the same fate as the unfaithful. The servant who knows what his master wants, but has not even started to carry out those wishes, will receive very many strokes of the lash. The one who did not know, but deserves to be beaten for what he has done, will receive fewer strokes. When a man has had a great deal given him, a great deal will be demanded of him; when a man has had a great deal given him on trust, even more will be expected of him.’

 

Prayer over the Offerings

Be pleased, O Lord, to accept the offerings of your Church, for in your mercy, you have given them to be offered and by your power you transform them into the mystery of our salvation. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Communion Antiphon : Ps 147: 12, 14

O Jerusalem, glorify the Lord, who gives you your fill of finest wheat.

 

Prayer after Communion

May the communion in your Sacrament that we have consumed, save us, O Lord, and confirm us in the light of your truth. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Meditation

The scripture is replete with various images, one which is the image of the thief. This image is used severally in the Gospel by Christ vis-à-vis the coming of the kingdom of heaven. When Christ speaks of the thief breaking in, He harps on the unexpected nature of His many comings. We are kept in uncertainty concerning the precise time of His coming. The keyword to bear in mind here is “watchfulness” at all times. We must shake off our state of stupor and indulgence in ephemerals things, and always fill our minds with matters that will lead us to eternity at any time. The grace of God will help us.
