Ce Savoyard (1567-1622) avait fait de solides études à Paris et à Padoue. Ordonné prêtre, il devint l’infatigable prédicateur du Chabbais, afin de ramener cette région à la foi catholique. Son zèle apostolique lui valut d’être choisi comme évêque de Genève, en résidence à Annecy. En cette ville, il fonda, avec Sainte Jeanne de Chantal, l’Ordre de la Visitation.

Pour le salut des âmes, Seigneur, tu as voulu que l’évêque saint François de Sales devienne le serviteur de tous en toutes choses ; fais que, soutenus par son exemple, nous donnions une preuve de ta douce charité en nous dévouant pour nos frères. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : 2 S 5, 1-7. 10
En ces jours-là, toutes les tribus d’Israël vinrent trouver David à Hébron et lui dirent: «Vois! Nous sommes de tes os et de ta chair. Dans le passé déjà, quand Saül était notre roi, c’est toi qui menais Israël en campagne et le ramenais, et le Seigneur t’a dit: “Tu seras le berger d’Israël mon peuple, tu seras le chef d’Israël.» Ainsi, tous les anciens d’Israël vinrent trouver le roi à Hébron. Le roi David fit alliance avec eux, à Hébron, devant le Seigneur. Ils donnèrent l’onction à David pour le faire roi sur Israël. Il avait trente ans quand il devint roi, et il régna quarante ans: à Hébron il régna sur Juda pendant sept ans et demi; et à Jérusalem il régna trente-trois ans, et à Jérusalem il régna trente-trois ans, à la fois sur Israël et sur Juda. Le roi avec ses hommes marcha sur Jérusalem contre les habitants de la région, les Jébuséens. On lui dit: «Tu n’entreras pas ici: des aveugles et des boiteux suffiraient à te repousser.» Autrement dit : David n’entrera pas ici. Mais David s’empara de la forteresse de Sion – c’est la Cité de David. David devint de plus en plus puissant. Le Seigneur, Dieu des armées, était avec lui.

1. Autrefois, tu as parlé à tes amis, dans une vision tu leur as dit: « J’ai donné mon appui à un homme d’élite, j’ai choisi dans ce peuple un jeune homme.
2. « J’ai trouvé David, mon serviteur, je l’ai sacré avec mon huile sainte; et ma main sera pour toujours avec lui, mon bras fortifiera son courage.

En ce temps-là, les scribes, qui étaient descendus de Jérusalem, disaient: «Ce Jésus est possédé par Béelzéboul; c’est par le chef des démons qu’il expulse les démons.» Les appelant près de lui, Jésus leur dit en parabole: «Comment Satan peut-il expulser Satan? Si un royaume est divisé contre lui-même, ce royaume ne peut pas tenir. Si les gens d’une même maison se divisent entre eux, ces gens ne pourront pas tenir. Si Satan s’est dressé contre lui-même, s’il est divisé, il ne peut pas tenir; c’en est fini de lui. Mais personne ne peut entrer dans la maison d’un homme fort et piller ses biens, s’il ne l’a d’abord ligoté. Alors seulement il pillera sa maison. Amen, je vous le dis: Tout sera pardonné aux enfants des hommes: leurs péchés et les blasphèmes qu’ils auront proférés. Mais si quelqu’un blasphème contre l’Esprit Saint, il n’aura jamais de pardon. Il est coupable d’un péché pour toujours.» Jésus parla ainsi parce qu’ils avaient dit: «Il est possédé par un esprit impur.»

Méditation
Des scribes dénoncent Jésus : « Il a en Lui Béelzéboul, c’est par le chef des démons qu’il chasse les démons. » Accusation absurde qui se brise sur la simplicité limpide de Jésus : un royaume divisé contre lui-même court à sa perte ! Accusation perverse qui attribue le bien à l’esprit du mal. Monstrueux blasphème qui confond « l’Esprit Saint » et « l’esprit impur ». C’est la marque de l’adversaire : lucidité illusoire et mensonge. Jésus, rempli d’Esprit Saint, est « le pur ». Il dit et fait le bien. Il est « l’homme fort » qui a lié Satan et délié les hommes.
L’Evangile s’achève par une parole énigmatique : « Si quelqu’un blasphème contre l’Esprit Saint, il reste sans pardon à jamais.» Le pardon de Dieu a-t-il une limite ? Où est son infinie miséricorde ? Soyons-en sûr, Jésus ne nous condamne pas. Avec le tranchant du véritable amour, il nous avertit d’un danger mortel : par un refus délibéré, nous pouvons nous exclure nous-mêmes du pardon.

First reading : Nehemiah 8:2-6,8-10
Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, consisting of men, women, and children old enough to understand. This was the first day of the seventh month. On the square before the Water Gate, in the presence of the men and women, and children old enough to understand, he read from the book from early morning till noon; all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden dais erected for the purpose. In full view of all the people – since he stood higher than all the people – Ezra opened the book; and when he opened it all the people stood up. Then Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people raised their hands and answered, ‘Amen! Amen!’ Then they bowed down and, face to the ground, prostrated themselves before the Lord. 1. The law of the Lord is perfect, it revives the soul. The rule of the Lord is to be trusted; it gives wisdom to the simple.

Second reading : 1 Corinthians 12:12-30
Just as a human body, though it is made up of many parts, is a single unit because all these parts, though many, make one body, so it is with Christ. In the one Spirit we were all baptised, Jews as well as Greeks, slaves as well as citizens, and one Spirit was given to us all to drink. Nor is the body to be identified with any one of its many parts. If the foot were to say, ‘I am not a hand and so I do not belong to the body’, would that mean that it stopped being part of the body? If the ear were to say, ‘I am not an eye, and so I do not belong to the body’, would that mean that it was not a part of the body? If your whole body was just one eye, how would you hear anything? If it was just one ear, how would you smell anything? Instead of that, God put all the separate parts into the body on purpose. If all the parts were the same, how could it be a body? As it is, the parts are many but the body is one. The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you’, nor can the head say to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ What is more, it is precisely the parts of the body that seem to be the weakest which are the indispensable ones; and it is the least honourable parts of the body that we clothe with the greatest care. So our more improper parts get decorated in a way that our more proper parts do not need. God has arranged the body so that more dignity is given to the parts which are without it, and that there may not be disagreements inside the body, but that each part may be equally concerned for all the others. If one part is hurt, all parts are hurt with it. If one part is given special honour, all parts enjoy it. Now you together are Christ’s body; but each of you is a different part of it. In the Church, God has given the first place to apostles, the second to prophets, the third to teachers; after them, miracles, and after them the gift of healing; helpers, good leaders, those with many languages. Are all of them apostles, or all of them prophets, or all of them teachers? Do they all have the gift of miracles, or all have the gift of healing? Do all speak strange languages, and all interpret them?

Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee; and his reputation spread throughout the countryside. He taught in their synagogues and everyone praised him. He came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up to read and they handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll he found the place where it is written: The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour. He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to speak to them, ‘This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen.’

Meditation
The Gospel reading speaks to us about the commencement of the ministry of Jesus. Anointed by the Spirit of the Lord, He announces the Lord’s year of favour in which the Good News will be preached to the poor, sight restored to the blind and the captives and downtrodden gain freedom. He has anointed us at our baptism to be His collaborators bringing the Good News to the poor. By lending a helping hand, we can free someone from captivity to poverty. When we love and care about others’ welfare, we can free them from loneliness and desolation. The downtrodden can regain the strength to carry on through our kind words. Christ wants to reach His people through us.

1ère lecture : Ne 8, 2-4a.5-6.8-10
En ces jours-là, le prêtre Esdras apporta le livre de la Loi en présence de l’assemblée, composée des hommes, des femmes, et de tous les enfants en âge de comprendre. C’était le premier jour du septième mois. Esdras, tourné vers la place de la porte des Eaux, fit la lecture dans le livre, depuis le lever du jour jusqu’à midi, en présence des hommes, des femmes, et de tous les enfants en âge de comprendre : tout le peuple écoutait la lecture de la Loi. Le scribe Esdras se tenait sur une tribune de bois, construite tout exprès. Esdras ouvrit le livre ; tout le peuple le voyait, car il dominait l’assemblée. Quand il ouvrit le livre, tout le monde se mit debout. Alors Esdras bénit le Seigneur, le Dieu très grand, et tout le peuple, levant les mains, répondit : « Amen ! Amen ! » Puis ils s’inclinèrent et se prosternèrent devant le Seigneur, le visage contre terre. Esdras lisait un passage dans le livre de la loi de Dieu, puis les Lévites traduisaient, donnaient le sens, et l’on pouvait comprendre. Néhémie le gouverneur, Esdras qui était prêtre et scribe, et les Lévites qui donnaient les explications, dirent à tout le peuple : « Ce jour est consacré au Seigneur votre Dieu ! Ne prenez pas le deuil, ne pleurez pas ! » Car ils pleuraient tous en entendant les paroles de la Loi. Esdras leur dit encore : « Allez, mangez des viandes savoureuses, buvez des boissons aromatisées, et envoyez une part à celui qui n’a rien de prêt. Car ce jour est consacré à notre Dieu ! Ne vous affligez pas : la joie du Seigneur est votre rempart ! »

R/ Tes paroles, Seigneur, sont esprit et elles sont vie. (cf. Jn 6, 63c)
1. La loi du Seigneur est parfaite, qui redonne vie ; la charte du Seigneur est sûre, qui rend sages les simples.
2. Les préceptes du Seigneur sont droits, ils réjouissent le cœur ; le commandement du Seigneur est limpide, il clarifie le regard.
3. La crainte qu’il inspire est pure, elle est là pour toujours ; les décisions du Seigneur sont justes et vraiment équitables.
4. Accueille les paroles de ma bouche, le murmure de mon cœur ; qu’ils parviennent devant toi, Seigneur, mon rocher, mon défenseur !
2ème lecture : 1 Co 12, 12-30
Frères, prenons une comparaison : notre corps ne fait qu’un, il a pourtant plusieurs membres ; et tous les membres, malgré leur nombre, ne forment qu’un seul corps. Il en est ainsi pour le Christ. C’est dans un unique Esprit, en effet, que nous tous, Juifs ou païens, esclaves ou hommes libres, nous avons été baptisés pour former un seul corps. Tous, nous avons été désaltérés par un unique Esprit. Le corps humain se compose non pas d’un seul, mais de plusieurs membres. Le pied aurait beau dire : « Je ne suis pas la main, donc je ne fais pas partie du corps », il fait cependant partie du corps. L’oreille aurait beau dire : « Je ne suis pas l’œil, donc je ne fais pas partie du corps », elle fait cependant partie du corps. Si, dans le corps, il n’y avait que les yeux, comment pourrait-on entendre ? S’il n’y avait que les oreilles, comment pourrait-on sentir les odeurs ? Mais, dans le corps, Dieu a disposé les différents membres comme il l’a voulu. S’il n’y avait en tout qu’un seul membre, comment cela ferait-il un corps ? En fait, il y a plusieurs membres, et un seul corps. L’œil ne peut pas dire à la main : « Je n’ai pas besoin de toi » ; la tête ne peut pas dire aux pieds : « Je n’ai pas besoin de vous ». Bien plus, les parties du corps qui paraissent les plus délicates sont indispensables. Et celles qui passent pour moins honorables, ce sont elles que nous traitons avec plus d’honneur ; celles qui sont moins décentes, nous les traitons plus décemment ; pour celles qui sont décentes, ce n’est pas nécessaire. Mais en organisant le corps, Dieu a accordé plus d’honneur à ce qui en est dépourvu. Il a voulu ainsi qu’il n’y ait pas de division dans le corps, mais que les différents membres aient tous le souci les uns des autres. Si un seul membre souffre, tous les membres partagent sa souffrance ; si un membre est à l’honneur, tous partagent sa joie. Or, vous êtes corps du Christ et, chacun pour votre part, vous êtes membres de ce corps. Parmi ceux que Dieu a placés ainsi dans l’Église, il y a premièrement des apôtres, deuxièmement des prophètes, troisièmement ceux qui ont charge d’enseigner ; ensuite, il y a les miracles, puis les dons de guérison, d’assistance, de gouvernement, le don de parler diverses langues mystérieuses. Tout le monde évidemment n’est pas apôtre, tout le monde n’est pas prophète, ni chargé d’enseigner ; tout le monde n’a pas à faire des miracles, à guérir, à dire des paroles mystérieuses, ou à les interpreter.

Alléluia, alléluia! Le Seigneur m’a envoyé, porter la Bonne Nouvelle aux pauvres, annoncer aux captifs leur libération. Alléluia. (Lc 4, 18cd)
Évangile : Lc 1, 1-4 ; 4, 14-21
Beaucoup ont entrepris de composer un récit des événements qui se sont accomplis parmi nous, d’après ce que nous ont transmis ceux qui, dès le commencement, furent témoins oculaires et serviteurs de la Parole. C’est pourquoi j’ai décidé, moi aussi, après avoir recueilli avec précision des informations concernant tout ce qui s’est passé depuis le début, d’écrire pour toi, excellent Théophile, un exposé suivi, afin que tu te rendes bien compte de la solidité des enseignements que tu as entendus. En ce temps-là, lorsque Jésus, dans la puissance de l’Esprit, revint en Galilée, sa renommée se répandit dans toute la région. Il enseignait dans les synagogues, et tout le monde faisait son éloge. Il vint à Nazareth, où il avait été élevé. Selon son habitude, il entra dans la synagogue le jour du sabbat, et il se leva pour faire la lecture. On lui remit le livre du prophète Isaïe. Il ouvrit le livre et trouva le passage où il est écrit : L’Esprit du Seigneur est sur moi parce que le Seigneur m’a consacré par l’onction. Il m’a envoyé porter la Bonne Nouvelle aux pauvres, annoncer aux captifs leur libération, et aux aveugles qu’ils retrouveront la vue, remettre en liberté les opprimés, annoncer une année favorable accordée par le Seigneur. Jésus referma le livre, le rendit au servant et s’assit. Tous, dans la synagogue, avaient les yeux fixés sur lui. Alors il se mit à leur dire : « Aujourd’hui s’accomplit ce passage de l’Écriture que vous venez d’entendre »

Méditation
« Aujourd’hui » est le premier mot prononcé en public par Jésus, selon Luc. C’est une façon pour lui d’affirmer le présent, le présent vécu, avec toute sa fragilité, qui prend soudain une merveilleuse richesse de sens. Quand Jésus dit : « aujourd’hui », cet aujourd’hui devient d’un coup le seul jour qui compte dans toute l’histoire. Jésus nous dit que l’Ecriture est faite pour interpeller ; elle est un message de Dieu à l’homme. Tant qu’elle ne l’a pas atteint dans ses œuvres vives, elle n’a pas d’intérêt ; tant qu’elle reste sur le papier, elle est, comme on dit de façon expressive, lettre morte. C’est dans nos oreilles qu’elle devient véritablement elle-même, qu’elle se met à exister, qu’elle est remplie. Ceci l’est beaucoup plus des passages où elle se donne elle-même plus explicitement comme une « bonne nouvelle ». Qu’est-ce qu’une bonne nouvelle qui ne réjouit pas ceux qui la reçoivent ? C’est une bonne nouvelle ratée, ni plus ni moins. Comme quoi il dépend de nous, aujourd’hui, que l’Evangile soit ou non raté…

Meditation
Jesus goes about His ministry in a radical manner, teaching, welcoming and attending to the crowds that wanted to see, hear, and touch Him. For Him, going about His Father’s business was His delight (cf. Luke 2:49; Jn 4:34). On the other hand, you have His family who fear for His life and welfare, having abandoned His foster father’s occupation, He sets himself up against the Jewish authorities given the content of His teachings and the crowds that flock to Him. Things have gone so bad that he cannot even find time to eat. They are convinced he is out of His mind. When consumed by the zeal to work for God, we risk being misunderstood. May faith and determination lead us on.

Fondateur dès 1835 de l’œuvre de l’Apostolat Catholique, aujourd’hui Union de l’Apostolat Catholique, et dans laquelle est incluse la Société de l’Apostolat Catholique (Pallottins), il invitait chacun à tout faire pour la plus grande gloire de Dieu et pour son propre salut ainsi que le salut des autres.

David lui demanda: « D’où viens-tu donc ? » Il lui répondit : « Je me suis échappé du camp d’Israël. » David lui dit: « Que s’est-il passé ? Raconte-le-moi ! » L’homme répondit : « Le peuple s’est enfui du champ de bataille ; beaucoup d’entre eux sont tombés et sont morts. Et même Saül et son fils Jonathan sont morts ! » Alors David arracha et déchira ses vêtements, et tous les hommes qui étaient avec lui firent de même. Ils se lamentèrent, pleurèrent et jeûnèrent jusqu’au soir, à cause de Saül et de son fils Jonathan, à cause du peuple du Seigneur et de la maison d’Israël, parce qu’ils étaient tombés par l’épée. Alors David chanta cette lamentation : « Ta fierté, Israël, transpercée sur tes hauteurs ! Comment sont-ils tombés, les héros? Saül et Jonathan, aimables, pleins de charme, ni dans la vie ni dans la mort ne furent séparés, plus rapides que les aigles, plus vaillants que les lions. Filles d’Israël, pleurez sur Saül : il vous revêtait de pourpre somptueuse et rehaussait de joyaux d’or vos vêtements. Comment sont-ils tombés, les héros, au milieu du combat ? Jonathan, transpercé sur les hauteurs ! J’ai le cœur serré à cause de toi, mon frère Jonathan. Tu étais plein d’affection pour moi, et ton amitié pour moi était merveille plus grande que l’amour des femmes ! Comment sont-ils tombés, les héros ? Comment ont-elles disparu, les armes du combat ? »

Méditation
Jésus, très sollicité par la foule, est tenu pour rien par les siens. Ceux qui croyaient le connaître, pour l’avoir côtoyé au quotidien, sont plus étrangers à son message. « Il est venu chez les siens, et les siens ne l’ont pas connu » dit l’Evangile de Jean. Drame de famille ? Pas seulement, tout le drame de l’humanité se dit en ces deux lignes. Et le nôtre aussi du même coup ! Toujours en retard d’un train quand il faut reconnaître le bien à faire, et même le bien qui nous est fait ; quand il faut percer la carapace de nos clichés et de nos idées préconçues pour voir, enfin, dans notre prochain, dans les événements, une dimension, une profondeur, qui nous avait toujours échappée. Il nous faut demander « des yeux pour voir, des oreilles pour entendre », sans quoi nous perdrons la tête !

St. Agnes

As with so many of the early Roman martyrs, very little is now known about Agnes’ life. Agnes was filled with the love of God from an early age, vowed herself to celibacy, and when the opportunity of martyrdom arose, she did not hide away but stepped forward and took it.

Behold, now she follows the Lamb who was crucified for us, powerful in virginity, modesty her offering, a sacrifice on the altar of chastity.

First reading : 1 Samuel 24:3-21
Saul took three thousand men chosen from the whole of Israel and went in search of David and his men east of the Rocks of the Wild Goats. Now David and his men were sitting in the recesses of the cave; David’s men said to him, ‘Today is the day of which the Lord said to you, “I will deliver your enemy into your power, do what you like with him.”’ David stood up and, unobserved, cut off the border of Saul’s cloak. Meditation
Jesus goes up the hill (a place of encounter), from there calls those he wanted. He called them to be his companions and to be sent out. As companions in His salvific work, they were first to be with Him, share His life and experience and live the experience of community. Then he would later send them out to do the things He did; preaching, dislodging the evil powers and constructing the reign of God. Jesus calls us by name (cf. Is 43:1) to an intimate relationship with Him and with others in the community of believers. Our testimony to Christ and His Gospel is largely connected with the extent of our intimacy with Christ and disposition to live with others as brothers and sisters.

vierge et martyre, mémoire
A Rome, au début du 4e siècle, une jeune fille de douze ans affronte sans crainte la mort, plutôt que de renier le Christ qu’elle aime par-dessus tout. Forte de la force même de Dieu, cette enfant résiste aux menaces, aux tortures, et réussit à préserver sa virginité. Telle fut Agnès, dont le nom, d’origine grecque, signifie ‘’la pure’’. Mais ‘’Agnès’’ évoque aussi ‘’agneau’’ : dans sa martyre, le Christ, Agneau de Dieu, continuait à triompher du mal par son sang répandu.

Saül prit trois mille hommes, choisis dans tout Israël, et partit à la recherche de David et de ses gens en face du Rocher des Bouquetins. Il arriva aux parcs à moutons qui sont en bordure de la route ; il y a là une grotte, où Saül entra pour se soulager. Or, David et ses hommes se trouvaient au fond de la grotte. Les hommes de David lui dirent : « Voici le jour dont le Seigneur t’a dit : “Je livrerai ton ennemi entre tes mains, tu en feras ce que tu voudras.” » David vint couper furtivement le pan du manteau de Saül. Alors le coeur lui battit d’avoir coupé le pan du manteau de Saül. Il dit à ses hommes : « Que le Seigneur me préserve de faire une chose pareille à mon maître, qui a reçu l’onction du Seigneur : porter la main sur lui, qui est le messie du Seigneur. » Par ses paroles, David retint ses hommes. Il leur interdit de se jeter sur Saül. Alors Saül quitta la grotte et continua sa route. David se leva, sortit de la grotte, et lui cria : « Mon seigneur le roi ! » Saül regarda derrière lui. David s’inclina jusqu’à terre et se prosterna, puis il lui cria : « Pourquoi écoutes-tu les gens qui te disent : “David te veut du mal” ? Aujourd’hui même, tes yeux ont vu comment le Seigneur t’avait livré entre mes mains dans la grotte ; pourtant, j’ai refusé de te tuer, je t’ai épargné et j’ai dit : “Je ne porterai pas la main sur mon seigneur le roi qui a reçu l’onction du Seigneur.” Regarde, père, regarde donc : voici dans ma main le pan de ton manteau. Puisque j’ai pu le couper, et que pourtant je ne t’ai pas tué, reconnais qu’il n’y a en moi ni méchanceté ni révolte. Je n’ai pas commis de faute contre toi, alors que toi, tu traques ma vie pour me l’enlever. C’est le Seigneur qui sera juge entre toi et moi, c’est le Seigneur qui me vengera de toi, mais ma main ne te touchera pas ! Comme dit le vieux proverbe : “Des méchants sort la méchanceté.” C’est pourquoi ma main ne te touchera pas. Après qui donc le roi d’Israël s’est-il mis en campagne ? Après qui cours-tu donc ? Après un chien crevé, après une puce ? Que le Seigneur soit notre arbitre, qu’il juge entre toi et moi, qu’il examine et défende ma cause, et qu’il me rende justice, en me délivrant de ta main ! » Lorsque David eut fini de parler, Saül s’écria : « Est-ce bien ta voix que j’entends, mon fils David ? » Et Saül se mit à crier et à pleurer. Puis il dit à David : « Toi, tu es juste, et plus que moi : car toi, tu m’as fait du bien, et moi, je t’ai fait du mal. Aujourd’hui tu as montré toute ta bonté envers moi : le Seigneur m’avait livré entre tes mains, et tu ne m’as pas tué ! Quand un homme surprend son ennemi, va-t-il le laisser partir tranquillement ? Que le Seigneur te récompense pour le bien que tu m’as fait aujourd’hui. Je sais maintenant que tu régneras certainement, et que la royauté d’Israël tiendra bon en ta main.

Méditation
Jésus s’en va dans la montagne, un lieu à l’écart, pour une étape importante de sa vie et de sa mission : l’appel de ses collaborateurs. C’est une nouvelle genèse, avec un échantillon d’humanité, des braves gens comme vous et moi : Pierre, Jacques, Jean… Il les institue, les investit d’une mission, en nommant, et même renommant certains pour l’occasion. Jésus nomme ses collaborateurs comme Adam avait nommé les créatures du Paradis. L’aventure peut commencer. C’est important de savoir qui on est, et qui nous envoie, pour être ambassadeur ! Un nom se reçoit toujours d’un autre. Il est le gage d’une confiance et une ouverture sur un avenir. Jésus veut « qu’ils soient avec lui ». Dans l’Evangile de Jean il demandera même à Dieu : « qu’ils soient en nous ». Projet de communion pour toute l’humanité, qu’il commence humblement avec Pierre, Jacques, Jean… Que nos espérances les plus folles pour le monde puissent trouver un début de réalisation avec… Pierre, Jacques, Jean…

First reading : Philippians 2:1-11
If our life in Christ means anything to you, if love can persuade at all, or the Spirit that we have in common, or any tenderness and sympathy, then be united in your convictions and united in your love, with a common purpose and a common mind. That is the one thing which would make me completely happy. There must be no competition among you, no conceit; but everybody is to be self-effacing. Meditation
Jesus compares the kingdom of God to a treasure and pearl of great value either stumbled on or found by a seeker. Whether one finds it without intending or finds it because he has been searching for it, what is important is that the person who finds it recognises that it is priceless and is ready to give up every other thing to acquire it. In Christ we encounter the reign of God. Do we realise how blessed we are to know Christ? Do we value the fact that He has transferred us into His kingdom (cf. Col 1:13)? Are we willing to sacrifice every other thing for the teachings of Christ and the values of the kingdom?

t. Fabien, pape et martyr
L’Église ancienne connaissait des ascensions brusques du laïcat à un ordre élevé de la hiérarchie : ce fut le cas de Fabien qui, de laïc, fut élu pape en 236. A la charge de successeur de Pierre il ajouta l’honneur du martyre : il témoigna victorieusement pour le Christ lors de la persécution de Dèce en 250.

En ces jours-là, au retour de l’armée, lorsque David revint après avoir tué le Philistin, les femmes sortirent de toutes les villes d’Israël à la rencontre du roi Saül pour chanter et danser au son des tambourins, des cris de joie et des cymbales. Les femmes dansaient en se renvoyant ce refrain: «Saül a tué ses milliers, et David, ses dizaines de milliers.» Saül le prit très mal et fut très irrité. Il disait: «À David on attribue les dizaines de milliers, et à moi les milliers ; il ne lui manque plus que la royauté!» Depuis ce jour-là, Saül regardait David avec méfiance. Saül dit à son fils Jonathan et à tous ses serviteurs son intention de faire mourir David. Mais Jonathan, le fils de Saül, aimait beaucoup David et il alla le prévenir: «Mon père Saül cherche à te faire mourir. Demain matin, sois sur tes gardes, mets-toi à l’abri, dissimule-toi. Moi, je sortirai et je me tiendrai à côté de mon père dans le champ où tu seras. Je parlerai de toi à mon père, je verrai ce qu’il en est et je te le ferai savoir.» Jonathan fit à son père Saül l’éloge de David; il dit: «Que le roi ne commette pas de faute contre son serviteur David, car lui n’a commis aucune faute envers toi. Au contraire, ses exploits sont une très bonne chose pour toi. Il a risqué sa vie, il a frappé à mort Goliath le Philistin, et le Seigneur a donné une grande victoire à tout Israël : tu l’as vu et tu en as été heureux. Pourquoi donc commettre une faute contre la vie d’un innocent, en faisant mourir David sans motif?» Saül écouta Jonathan et fit ce serment: «Par le Seigneur vivant, il ne sera pas mis à mort!» Alors Jonathan appela David et lui répéta tout ce que le roi avait dit. Puis il le conduisit à Saül, et David reprit sa place comme avant.

1. Pitié, mon Dieu ! Des hommes s’acharnent contre moi; tout le jour, ils me combattent, ils me harcèlent. Ils s’acharnent, ils me guettent tout le jour ; mais là-haut, une armée combat pour moi.

Évangile : Mc 3, 7-12
En ce temps-là, Jésus se retira avec ses disciples près de la mer, et une grande multitude de gens, venus de la Galilée, le suivirent. De Judée, de Jérusalem, d’Idumée, de Transjordanie, et de la région de Tyr et de Sidon vinrent aussi à lui une multitude de gens qui avaient entendu parler de ce qu’il faisait. Il dit à ses disciples de tenir une barque à sa disposition pour que la foule ne l’écrase pas. Car il avait fait beaucoup de guérisons, si bien que tous ceux qui souffraient de quelque mal se précipitaient sur lui pour le toucher. Et lorsque les esprits impurs le voyaient, ils se jetaient à ses pieds et criaient: «Toi, tu es le Fils de Dieu!» Mais il leur défendait vivement de le faire connaître.

Seigneur, accorde-nous la grâce de vraiment participer à cette eucharistie; Car chaque fois qu’est célébré ce sacrifice en mémorial, c’est l’ouvre de notre Rédemption qui s’accomplit. Par Jésus.

Pénètre-nous, Seigneur, de ton esprit de charité, Afin que soient unis par ton amour ceux que tu as nourris d’un même pain. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Hier, les Pharisiens tenaient conseil avec les Hérodiens pour faire périr Jésus, et aujourd’hui, le voilà entouré d’une foule venue de loin pour se faire guérir. Quel contraste ! Quel homme menacé de mort agirait ainsi ? Un guérisseur, aussi puissant soit-il, aurait cessé toute activité pour protéger sa propre vie. Mais pour le moment, personne autour de lui ne se pose cette question. La foule suit Jésus, non parce qu’elle a compris qui il était, mais parce qu’elle a été guérie et rassasiée. Jésus le sait, c’est pourquoi il rabroue les esprits impurs quand ils crient « Tu es le Fils de Dieu ». Leur connaissance n’est qu’extérieure. Il faut attendre que Jésus se manifeste sur la croix pour qu’un centurion puisse dire à la fin de l’évangile : « Vraiment, cet homme était Fils de Dieu ! »

St. Fillan
St. Fillan, son of Feriach was also known as Foelan. Extravagant miracles attributed to him, such as the one in which his prayers caused a wolf that had killed the ox he was using to drag materials to the church he was building. Fillan died on January 19.

David said to Saul, ‘Let no-one lose heart on his account; your servant will go and fight the Philistine.’ But Saul answered David, ‘You cannot go and fight the Philistine; you are only a boy and he has been a warrior from his youth.’ ‘The Lord who rescued me from the claws of lion and bear’ David said ‘will rescue me from the power of this Philistine.’ Then Saul said to David, ‘Go, and the Lord be with you!’ He took his staff in his hand, picked five smooth stones from the river bed, put them in his shepherd’s bag, in his pouch, and with his sling in his hand he went to meet the Philistine. Putting his hand in his bag, he took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead; the stone penetrated his forehead and he fell on his face to the ground. Thus David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone and struck the Philistine down and killed him. David had no sword in his hand. Then David ran and, standing over the Philistine, seized his sword and drew it from the scabbard, and with this he killed him, cutting off his head. The Philistines saw that their champion was dead, and took to flight.

Gospel : Mark 3:1-6
Jesus went into a synagogue, and there was a man there who had a withered hand. And they were watching him to see if he would cure him on the sabbath day, hoping for something to use against him. He said to the man with the withered hand, ‘Stand up out in the middle!’ Then he said to them, ‘Is it against the law on the sabbath day to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to kill?’ But they said nothing. Then, grieved to find them so obstinate, he looked angrily round at them, and said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it out and his hand was better. The Pharisees went out and at once began to plot with the Herodians against him, discussing how to destroy him.
Prayer over the Offerings
Grant us, O Lord, we pray, that we may participate worthily in these mysteries, for whenever the memorial of this sacrifice is celebrated the work of our redemption is accomplished. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
The Gospel reading presents us with one of the reasons the pharisees sought to destroy Jesus; the accusation of flouting the Sabbath – in this context, working on a Sabbath. When the practice of religion begins to lay excessive emphasis on laws and regulations, it runs the risk of forgetting God who is love (cf. 1 Jn 4:8); the letters of the law gain priority over the spirit; worshippers become slaves of their religion and religious gatherings lose their being meaning of a space of encounter with God and with one another. A true encounter with God opens our eyes to the needs of our brethren and compels us to act. Transforming His anger into compassion, Jesus invites us to reflect God who is love.
