St. Bruno
(c.1033 – 1101)

He was born at Cologne and educated partly at Reims. He was head of the episcopal school there for almost 20 years. In 1075 he was appointed chancellor of the church of Reims and had to devote himself to the administration of the diocese. The bishop at that time, Manasses de Gournai, was impious, corrupt, and violent. Through the intervention of Bruno and others, the Council of Autun suspended Manasses, who retaliated by demolishing the houses of their accusers and confiscating their goods. In 1080 a final decision of the Pope, together with a popular uprising, deposed Manasses.

So now, Lord, please take away my life, for I might as well be dead as go on living.’ The Lord replied, ‘Are you right to be angry?’ Jonah then went out of the city and sat down to the east of the city. There he made himself a shelter and sat under it in the shade, to see what would happen to the city. Next, when the sun rose, God arranged that there should be a scorching east wind; the sun beat down so hard on Jonah’s head that he was overcome and begged for death, saying, ‘I might as well be dead as go on living.’ God said to Jonah, ‘Are you right to be angry about the castor-oil plant?’ He replied, ‘I have every right to be angry, to the point of death.’ The Lord replied, ‘You are only upset about a castor-oil plant which cost you no labour, which you did not make grow, which sprouted in a night and has perished in a night. And am I not to feel sorry for Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, to say nothing of all the animals?’

Meditation
In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus underlines how we ought to pray. Our prayers should be a prayer of worship, contrition, reliance, submission and perseverance. We are called today to be persistent in prayer as a means of a better communion with God, a means of waiting on God to realise and fulfil his plans in us. His love for us is sure, and he will give us what is good for us at the right time. Thus, we need to trust, hope and have faith in God, and above all, love him more.

Helena Kowalska was born on the 25th August 1905 in Głogowiec, near Łódź in Poland, the third of ten children of a poor and religious family. From an early age she had a religious vocation, and she showed great determination in pursuing it despite the opposition of her parents and rejection by the first few convents to which she applied.

The news reached the king of Nineveh, who rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth and sat down in ashes. Meditation The words of Christ, “Mary has chosen the better part”, do not mean Martha was doing badly by being hospitable They are invitation to always find a balance with the Lord. Attachment to God, listening and putting into practice his word attract his mercy, compassion and forgiveness, which the people of Nineveh experienced in today’s first reading. May God grant us the grace never to depart from his presence.

St. Francis of Assisi

Francis was the son of a prosperous cloth merchant in Assisi. When his father objected to having his goods sold without his consent to pay for the restoration of a church, the bishop commanded Francis to repay the money. He did. He also renounced his father and gave back everything he had ever been given, even his garments.
Entrance Antiphon
Francis, the man of God, left his home behind, abandoned his inheritance and became poor and penniless, but the Lord raised him up.
Collect
O God, by whose gift Saint Francis was conformed to Christ in poverty and humility, grant that, by walking in Francis’ footsteps, we may follow your Son, and, through joyful charity, come to be united with you. As we bring you these offerings, O Lord, we pray that we may be rightly disposed for the celebration of the mystery of the Cross, which Saint Francis so ardently embraced. Through Christ our Lord.

Grant us, we pray, O Lord, through these holy gifts which we have received, that, imitating the charity and apostolic zeal of Saint Francis, we may experience the effects of your love and spread them everywhere for the salvation of all. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The readings invite us to be selfless in our actions. Christ uses the story of the Good Samaritan who went out of himself and chose mercy and compassion over societial norms, prejudices, opinion, time, and money, to teach us that love for God is expressed in kindness to enemies and strangers. May we respond faithfully to this call for mercy and compassion towards those suffering in our world.

Première lecture : Jonas 1, 1 – 2, 1.11
La parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jonas, fils d’Amittaï : « Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville païenne, et proclame que sa méchanceté est montée jusqu’à moi. » Jonas se leva, mais pour s’enfuir à Tarsis, loin de la face du Seigneur. Descendu à Jaffa, il trouva un navire en partance pour Tarsis. Il paya son passage et s’embarqua pour s’y rendre, loin de la face du Seigneur. Mais le Seigneur lança sur la mer un vent violent, et il s’éleva une grande tempête, au point que le navire menaçait de se briser. Les matelots prirent peur ; ils crièrent chacun vers son dieu et, pour s’alléger, lancèrent la cargaison à la mer. Or, Jonas était descendu dans la cale du navire, il s’était couché et dormait d’un sommeil mystérieux. Le capitaine alla le trouver et lui dit : «Qu’est-ce que tu fais ? Tu dors ?Lève-tôt ! Invoque ton dieu. Peut-être que ce dieu s’occupera de nous pour nous empêcher de périr.» Et les matelots se disaient entre eux: «Tirons au sort pour savoir à qui nous devons ce malheur. »Ils tirèrent au sort, et le sort tomba sur Jonas. Ils lui demandèrent: « Dis-nous donc d’où nous vient ce malheur. Quel est ton métier ? D’où viens-tu ? Quel est ton pays ? De quel peuple es-tu ? » Jonas leur répondit : « Je suis hébreu, moi, je crains le Seigneur, le Dieu du ciel, qui a fait la mer et la terre ferme. » Les matelots furent saisis d’une grande peur et lui dirent : « Qu’est-ce que tu as fait là ? »Car ces hommes savaient, d’après ce qu’il leur avait dit, qu’il fuyait la face du Seigneur. Ils lui demandèrent: « Qu’est-ce que nous devons faire de toi, pour que la mer se calme autour de nous?» Car la mer était de plus en plus furieuse. Il leur répondit: « Prenez-moi, jetez-moi à la mer, pour que la mer se calme autour de vous. Car, je le reconnais, c’est à cause de moi que cette grande tempête vous assaille. » Les matelots ramèrent pour regagner la terre, mais sans y parvenir, car la mer était de plus en plus furieuse autour d’eux. Ils invoquèrent alors le Seigneur : «Ah ! Seigneur, ne nous fais pas mourir à cause de cet homme, et ne nous rends pas responsables de la mort d’un innocent, car toi, tu es le Seigneur:ce que tu as voulu, tu l’as fait.» Puis ils prirent Jonas et le jetèrent à la mer. Alors la fureur de la mer tomba. Les hommes furent saisis par la crainte du Seigneur ; ils lui offrirent un sacrifice accompagné de vœux. Le Seigneur donna l’ordre à un grand poisson d’engloutir Jonas. Jonas demeura dans les entrailles du poisson trois jours et trois nuits. Alors le Seigneur parla au poisson, et celui-ci rejeta Jonas sur la terre ferme.

Par hasard, un prêtre descendait par ce chemin ; il le vit et passa de l’autre côté. De même un lévite arriva à cet endroit ; il le vit et passa de l’autre côté. Mais un Samaritain, qui était en route, arriva près de lui ; il le vit et fut saisi de compassion. Il s’approcha, et pansa ses blessures en y versant de l’huile et du vin; puis il le chargea sur sa propre monture, le conduisit dans une auberge et prit soin de lui. Méditation
Celui qui croit en Dieu et qui rejette son prochain est un croyant qui lit mal et qui comprend de travers la Parole de Dieu. Jonas n’accueillait pas à sa juste valeur l’étranger. Il ne voulait pas aller à Ninive. Pourtant la foi en Dieu le Créateur tient intégralement à cette attache interpersonnelle. La mer et la terre se remuent quand un croyant se ferme à l’homme parce qu’il est de race étrangère. La foi combat les divisions, la haine et les inimitiés. Dieu attend de tout croyant une ouverture sans limite à l’humanité. « Va, et aussi, fais de même ». Car on ne peut pas voir Dieu, si on néglige l’homme. Un chrétien fait de tout homme son prochain, quelle que soit son origine.

Second reading: Hebrews 2:9-11
We see in Jesus one who was for a short while made lower than the angels and is now crowned with glory and splendour because he submitted to death; by God’s grace he had to experience death for all mankind. As it was his purpose to bring a great many of his sons into glory, it was appropriate that God, for whom everything exists and through whom everything exists, should make perfect, through suffering, the leader who would take them to their salvation. For the one who sanctifies, and the ones who are sanctified, are of the same stock; that is why he openly calls them brothers.

Meditation
Marriage faces a lot of challenges, for example: divorce, same sex marriage and separations. We are exhorted to uphold the values of marriage as it was in God’s plan of creation. Marriage remains a sacrament between man and woman with its essential elements being unity, indissolubility, the wellbeing of the spouses, procreation and the upbringing of the offspring. Anything outside this constitutes a deformation of this holy institution. Let us together uphold the dignity of the marriage institution, which is not only the mother of every vocation but the foundation of the domestic church which is the family.

Première lecture : Genèse 2,18-24.
Le Seigneur Dieu dit : « Il n’est pas bon que l’homme soit seul. Je vais lui faire une aide qui lui correspondra. » Avec de la terre, le Seigneur Dieu modela toutes les bêtes des champs et tous les oiseaux du ciel, et il les amena vers l’homme pour voir quels noms il leur donnerait. C’étaient des êtres vivants, et l’homme donna un nom à chacun. L’homme donna donc leurs noms à tous les animaux, aux oiseaux du ciel et à toutes les bêtes des champs. Mais il ne trouva aucune aide qui lui corresponde. Alors le Seigneur Dieu fit tomber sur lui un sommeil mystérieux, et l’homme s’endormit. Le Seigneur Dieu prit une de ses côtes, puis il referma la chair à sa place. Avec la côte qu’il avait prise à l’homme, il façonna une femme et il l’amena vers l’homme. L’homme dit alors : « Cette fois-ci, voilà l’os de mes os et la chair de ma chair ! On l’appellera femme – Ishsha –, elle qui fut tirée de l’homme – Ish. » À cause de cela, l’homme quittera son père et sa mère, il s’attachera à sa femme, et tous deux ne feront plus qu’un.

Deuxième lecture : Hébreux 2,9-11.
Mais Jésus, qui a été abaissé un peu au-dessous des anges, nous le voyons couronné de gloire et d’honneur à cause de sa Passion et de sa mort. Si donc il a fait l’expérience de la mort, c’est, par grâce de Dieu, au profit de tous. Celui pour qui et par qui tout existe voulait conduire une multitude de fils jusqu’à la gloire ; c’est pourquoi il convenait qu’il mène à sa perfection, par des souffrances, celui qui est à l’origine de leur salut. Car celui qui sanctifie, et ceux qui sont sanctifiés, doivent tous avoir même origine ; pour cette raison, Jésus n’a pas honte de les appeler ses frères.

Des pharisiens l’abordèrent et, pour le mettre à l’épreuve, ils lui demandaient: « Est-il permis à un mari de renvoyer sa femme ? » Jésus leur répondit : « Que vous a prescrit Moïse ? » Ils lui dirent: « Moïse a permis de renvoyer sa femme à condition d’établir un acte de répudiation. » Jésus répliqua : « C’est en raison de la dureté de vos cœurs qu’il a formulé pour vous cette règle. Si une femme qui a renvoyé son mari en épouse un autre, elle devient adultère.» Des gens présentaient à Jésus des enfants pour qu’il pose la main sur eux ; mais les disciples les écartèrent vivement. Voyant cela, Jésus se fâcha et leur dit : « Laissez les enfants venir à moi, ne les empêchez pas, car le royaume de Dieu est à ceux qui leur ressemblent. Amen, je vous le dis : celui qui n’accueille pas le royaume de Dieu à la manière d’un enfant n’y entrera pas. » Il les embrassait et les bénissait en leur imposant les mains.

Méditation
L’union de l’homme et de la femme devant Dieu doit se vivre dans le mystère même de Dieu qui est Amour. Il s’agit d’une véritable rencontre de personnes égales en dignité qui conjuguent pour la promotion de leur humanité. Dans ce rendez-vous, chaque partenaire est prêt à se sacrifier pour l’autre, pour sa croissance, pour son bonheur. Les partenaires ne sont pas des personnes qui se suffisent. Le texte hébreu le dit clairement et poétiquement : le mariage lie Ish et Ishsha, ça rime joliment. Ils partagent l’humanité dans l’égalité. Les deux sont des personnes égales en dignité. La vie dans le respect religieux de cette différence est tout simplement la beauté du mariage

Holy Guardian Angels

The doctrine that every individual soul has a guardian angel is not an article of faith, but it is present in both the Old and New Testaments. As Jesus says, “see that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven always gaze on the face of my Father in heaven” (Matthew 18:10-14). This feast reminds us that God cares for each of us, individually.

Meditation
To be great is to be childlike and not to be childish. We are called in today’s Gospel to cultivate and practice childlike attitudes if we seek true greatness. Childlikeness goes with humility, simplicity, servitude, love, honesty, frankness and hospitality for example. These values are our sole ticket to the Kingdom of God. Above all these, are those who welcome children, who protect them, who care for them. These people will surely benefit from the graces of prayers of their angels who watch and pray for them in heaven.

La Bible nous révèle que, dans l’histoire des hommes, interviennent les anges, envoyés par Dieu pour guider et protéger son peuple. Quand l’Eglise rappelle cette doctrine, elle nous invite à nous réjouir de la présence des anges, à participer à leur louange et à nous confier à eux aux heures de danger ou de tentation.

Tu nous as donné, Seigneur, dans ce sacrement, la nourriture pour la vie éternelle ; guide-nous par le secours des anges, sur le chemin du salut et de la paix, par Jésus.
Méditation
« Une fois convertis, mettez dix fois plus d’ardeur à le chercher » (Ba 4, 27). Le croyant n’a pas fini sa marche vers Dieu. Se tourner vers le Seigneur consiste à devenir réellement son enfant. C’est se laisser enfanter par Dieu. La volonté du Seigneur doit être notre désir. Ses sentiments doivent habiter le cœur du croyant. C’est très désagréable de voir un homme se perdre dans sa pensée qui s’éloigne royalement des routes de Dieu. Il ne faut jamais oublier Dieu dans sa vie. Le vrai chrétien se sait toujours enfant de Dieu. Il vit dans la proximité du Seigneur et dans l’attention forte à sa Parole. Ses oreilles ne refusent aucunement les lois de Dieu. Son ambition est de grandir dans sa voie et son ardeur ne baisse point dans la piété.

St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus
(1873 – 1897)

She was born in France on 2nd January, 1873 and entered the Carmel of Lisieux in 1888. Though her faith was seriously tested by sickness she grew in sanctity. She died at the age of 24 in 1897 with the following words: “I am not dying, I am entering life”. Her example of holiness has been received with great enthusiasm by all the faithful and even outside Christianity.
Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Deut 32: 10-12
The Lord led her and taught her, and kept her as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle spreading its wings he took her up and bore her on his shoulders. The Lord alone was her guide.

O God, who open your Kingdom to those who are humble and to little ones, lead us to follow trustingly in the little way of Saint Thérèse, so that through her intercession, we may see your eternal glory revealed. Meditation
Now, we have the chance to turn away from our evil path. Faith and conversion come not only from hearing but also putting into practice the words of the Gospel. And this gospel presents us with a choice, to seek for Life or death. He who rejects any of those placed before us to announce the Good News is rejecting Jesus himself. We are called today to conversion, to a total change of life and to be listeners and doers of the Word of God.

Sainte Thérèse de l’Enfant-Jésus, vierge, patronne secondaire de la France

Thérèse Martin (1873-1897) a vingt-quatre ans quand elle meurt, quasi inconnue, au Carmel de Lisieux, après une vie de fidélité silencieuse, animée par un amour ardent de Jésus et du prochain. En 1925, Thérèse de l’Enfant-Jésus est la sainte qu’aime le monde entier et dont l’autobiographie propose à tous, spécialement aux plus petits, son message simple et exigeant : suivre la ‘’petite voie’’, c’est reconnaître sa petitesse et s’abandonner avec confiance à l’infinie bonté de Dieu, comme un tout petit dans les bras de sa mère. Cette contemplative, assaillie par des tentations d’incroyance, a un témoignage à apporter aux chrétiens dont la foi est affrontée à l’athéisme. Elle est aussi la patronne des missions.

Au Seigneur notre Dieu appartient la justice, mais à nous la honte sur le visage comme on le voit aujourd’hui :honte pour l’homme de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem, pour nos rois et nos chefs, pour nos prêtres, nos prophètes et nos pères ; oui, nous avons péché contre le Seigneur, nous lui avons désobéi, nous n’avons pas écouté la voix du Seigneur notre Dieu, qui nous disait de suivre les préceptes que le Seigneur nous avait mis sous les yeux. Depuis le jour où le Seigneur a fait sortir nos pères du pays d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour, nous n’avons pas cessé de désobéir au Seigneur notre Dieu ; dans notre légèreté, nous n’avons pas écouté sa voix. Aussi, comme on le voit aujourd’hui, le malheur s’est attaché à nous, avec la malédiction que le Seigneur avait fait prononcer par son serviteur Moïse, au jour où il a fait sortir nos pères du pays d’Égypte pour nous donner une terre ruisselant de lait et de miel. Nous n’avons pas écouté la voix du Seigneur notre Dieu, à travers toutes les paroles des prophètes qu’il nous envoyait. Chacun de nous, selon la pensée de son cœur mauvais, est allé servir d’autres dieux et faire ce qui est mal aux yeux du Seigneur notre Dieu.

Car, si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chez vous avaient eu lieu à Tyr et à Sidon, il y a longtemps que leurs habitants auraient fait pénitence, avec le sac et la cendre. D’ailleurs, Tyr et Sidon seront mieux traitées que vous lors du Jugement. Et toi, Capharnaüm, seras-tu élevée jusqu’au ciel ? Non, jusqu’au séjour des morts tu descendras ! Que cette eucharistie, Seigneur, renouvelle nos esprits et nos corps, et nous donne part à l’héritage glorieux de celui qui nous unit à son sacrifice lorsque nous proclamons sa mort. Lui qui.
Méditation
On ne naît pas chrétien, mais on le devient. Depuis le jour de son baptême, le disciple du Christ est un homme qui se sait pécheur et qui tend toujours vers la conversion, une option qui le tient perpétuellement à cœur. Aussi, une fois sorti du courroux de la torture et de la déperdition, il compte désormais s’épanouir dans la félicité céleste en compagnie de Dieu. La vie change de cap. La légèreté n’est plus de mise. L’écoute et la soumission à Dieu sont la règle de conduite. Son agir se base davantage sur la volonté de Dieu qui est le bien, le beau et le vrai. Croyant, il ne fait rien qui soit déplaisant à Dieu. Il ne rejette pas le Créateur et la Voix du Maître de la vie réglemente son quotidien. Il accueille tout ce que Dieu indique.
