Seigneur, par ton sang tu racheté pour Dieu des hommes de toutes races, langues, peuples et nations. Tu en fais pour notre Dieu un royaume de prêtres, alléluia.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu à qui nous devons le salut et la liberté écoute le cri de notre prière : puisque tu nous as racheté par le sang de ton Fils, fait que nous puisons vivre de toi et trouver en toi le bonheur éternel. Par Jésus-Christ.
1ère lecture : Act. 13, 26-33
En ces jours-là, Paul vint à Antioche de Pisidie. Dans la synagogue, il disait : « Vous, frères, les fils de la lignée d’Abraham et ceux parmi vous qui craignent Dieu, c’est à nous que la parole du salut a été envoyée. En effet, les habitants de Jérusalem et leurs chefs ont méconnu Jésus, ainsi que les paroles des prophètes qu’on lit chaque sabbat ; or, en le jugeant, ils les ont accomplies. Sans avoir trouvé en lui aucun motif de condamnation à mort, ils ont demandé à Pilate qu’il soit supprimé. Et, après avoir accompli tout ce qui était écrit de lui, ils l’ont descendu du bois de la croix et mis au tombeau. Mais Dieu l’a ressuscité d’entre les morts. Il est apparu pendant bien des jours à ceux qui étaient montés avec lui de Galilée à Jérusalem, et qui sont maintenant ses témoins devant le peuple. Et nous, nous vous annonçons cette Bonne Nouvelle: la promesse faite à nos pères, Dieu l’a pleinement accomplie pour nous, leurs enfants, en ressuscitant Jésus, comme il est écrit au psaume deux: Tu es mon fils ; moi, aujourd’hui, je t’ai engendré. ».

Reçoit avec bonté, Seigneur, les offrandes de ton peuple : garde le sous ta protection, pour qu’il ne perde aucun des biens que tu lui donne, et qu’il découvre ce qui demeure toujours. Par Jésus

Méditation
Dans la première lecture saint Paul affirme que Dieu a accomplie sa promesse en ressuscitant Jésus comme il était annoncé dans les écritures. C’est le contenu essentiel de la Bonne Nouvelle annoncée par les apôtres. Pour Paul, la résurrection de Jésus est un motif d’espérance. Avec la résurrection, nait l’espoir que Dieu agira dans la vie de son peuple, car il n’oublie jamais ses promesses.

First reading : Acts 13:26-33
Paul stood up in the synagogue at Antioch in Pisidia, held up a hand for silence and began to speak: ‘My brothers, sons of Abraham’s race, and all you who fear God, this message of salvation is meant for you. What the people of Jerusalem and their rulers did, though they did not realise it, was in fact to fulfil the prophecies read on every sabbath. Though they found nothing to justify his death, they condemned him and asked Pilate to have him executed. When they had carried out everything that Scripture foretells about him they took him down from the tree and buried him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and it is these same companions of his who are now his witnesses before our people. ‘We have come here to tell you the Good News. It was to our ancestors that God made the promise but it is to us, their children, that he has fulfilled it, by raising Jesus from the dead. As Scripture says in the second psalm: You are my son: today I have become your father.’

Meditation
Many people have likely encountered the experience of getting lost in an unfamiliar town or struggling to navigate to a specific destination. Thanks to technology, a Global Positioning System (GPS) app on our mobile phone now makes it easy to find our way if we get lost. Similarly, as Christians, to reach our destination, we need Christ to guide us. He declares Himself the way, the truth, and the life, essentially our spiritual GPS. By staying rooted in Him and living according to His Word, we are assured of reaching our ultimate destination, which is heaven, where he has prepared a place for us.

Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui relèves la nature humaine bien au-dessus de sa condition originelle, souviens-toi de cette œuvre de ton amour : maintiens dans ta bénédiction ceux que tu as régénérés. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Act 13, 13-25
Quittant l’île de Chypre pour l’Asie Mineure, Paul et ceux qui l’accompagnaient s’embarquèrent à Paphoset arrivèrent à Pergé en Pamphylie. Mais Jean-Marc les abandonna pour s’en retourner à Jérusalem. Quant à eux, ils poursuivirent leur voyage au-delà de Pergé et arrivèrent à Antioche de Pisidie. Le jour du sabbat, ils entrèrent à la synagogue et prirent place. Après la lecture de la Loi et des Prophètes, les chefs de la synagogue leur envoyèrent dire: « Frères, si vous avez une parole d’exhortation pour le peuple, parlez. » Paul se leva, fit un signe de la main et dit : « Israélites, et vous aussi qui craignez Dieu, écoutez : Le Dieu de ce peuple, le Dieu d’Israël a choisi nos pères ; il a fait grandir son peuple pendant le séjour en Égypte et il l’en a fait sortir à bras étendu. Pendant une quarantaine d’années, il les a supportés au désert et, après avoir exterminé tour à tour sept nations au pays de Canaan, il a partagé pour eux ce pays en héritage. Tout cela dura environ quatre cent cinquante ans. Ensuite, il leur a donné des juges, jusqu’au prophète Samuel. Puis ils demandèrent un roi, et Dieu leur donna Saül, fils de Kish, homme de la tribu de Benjamin, pour quarante années. Après l’avoir rejeté, Dieu a, pour eux, suscité David comme roi, et il lui a rendu ce témoignage : J’ai trouvé David, fils de Jessé ; c’est un homme selon mon cœur qui réalisera toutes mes volontés. De la descendance de David, Dieu, selon la promesse, a fait sortir un sauveur pour Israël : c’est Jésus, dont Jean le Baptiste a préparé l’avènement en proclamant avant lui un baptême de conversion pour tout le peuple d’Israël. Au moment d’achever sa course, Jean disait : “Ce que vous pensez que je suis, je ne le suis pas. Mais le voici qui vient après moi, et je ne suis pas digne de retirer les sandales de ses pieds.” ».

Sachant cela, heureux êtes-vous, si vous le faites. Ce n’est pas de vous tous que je parle. Moi, je sais quels sont ceux que j’ai choisis, mais il faut que s’accomplisse l’Écriture: Celui qui mange le pain avec moi m’a frappé du talon. Je vous dis ces choses dès maintenant, avant qu’elles n’arrivent ; ainsi, lorsqu’elles arriveront, vous croirez que moi, JE SUIS. Amen, amen, je vous le dis :si quelqu’un reçoit celui que j’envoie, il me reçoit moi-même ; et celui qui me reçoit, reçoit Celui qui m’a envoyé. »

Que nos prières montent vers toi, Seigneur, avec ces offrandes pour le sacrifice ; dans ta bonté purifie-nous, et nous correspondrons davantage aux sacrements de ton amour. Par Jésus.

Méditation
En parcourant l’histoire du peuple choisi, saint Paul rappelle à ses auditeurs que le choix de David était un prélude de la présence de Jésus qui agit selon le cœur de Dieu son père. Jésus vient donc accomplir le projet de Dieu de faire des hommes un peuple unifié avec un seul roi un seul Seigneur, un seul maitre : le Christ.

He was born near Madrid to very poor parents. He was a labourer and later a bailiff on the estates of a landowner called Juan de Vargas. He was noted for his piety. He died on 15 May 1130.

O God, who restore human nature to yet greater dignity than at its beginnings, look upon the amazing mystery of your loving kindness, and in those you have chosen to make new through the wonder of rebirth, may you preserve the gifts of your enduring grace and blessing. First reading : Acts 13:13-25
Paul and his friends went by sea from Paphos to Perga in Pamphylia where John left them to go back to Jerusalem. The others carried on from Perga till they reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to the synagogue on the sabbath and took their seats. After the lessons from the Law and the Prophets had been read, the presidents of the synagogue sent them a message: ‘Brothers, if you would like to address some words of encouragement to the congregation, please do so.’ Paul stood up, held up a hand for silence and began to speak: ‘Men of Israel, and fearers of God, listen! The God of our nation Israel chose our ancestors, and made our people great when they were living as foreigners in Egypt; then by divine power he led them out, and for about forty years took care of them in the wilderness. When he had destroyed seven nations in Canaan, he put them in possession of their land for about four hundred and fifty years. After this he gave them judges, down to the prophet Samuel. Then they demanded a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin. After forty years, he deposed him and made David their king, of whom he approved in these words, “I have selected David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will carry out my whole purpose.” To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David’s descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel. Before John ended his career he said, “I am not the one you imagine me to be; that one is coming after me and I am not fit to undo his sandal.”’

Meditation
“Whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me”. Regrettably, a lack of hospitality and an increasing indifference towards strangers have become a normal tendency in our society. Scepticism and fear often deter people from opening their doors to strangers. This indifference has extended even to relatives, as it is not uncommon to hear someone say to a family member, “Why didn’t you inform me before coming?” Unfortunately, this plague has also affected some priests and religious, who are expected to embody symbols of hospitality. Christ challenges us to be ready to welcome others, especially strangers, as He can visit us in the form of a stranger. Let us strive to overcome the prevailing indifference and rediscover the virtue of hospitality in our interactions with those around us.

Après l’Ascension du Seigneur, Matthias est élu pour remplacer Judas et compléter le nombre des Douze. Avant l’élection, Pierre rappelle quelle est la mission essentielle des Apôtres, afin de définir les conditions que doit remplir l’élu. Les Douze doivent témoigner que Jésus, cet homme dont ils ont partagé la vie avant qu’il ne meure crucifié, a été ressuscité par Dieu dont il partage maintenant la gloire.

D’un seul cœur, les Apôtres participaient fidèlement à la prière, avec quelques femmes, dont Marie, mère de Jésus, et avec ses frères, alléluia.
Prière d’ouverture
Au terme de ces fêtes pascales, accorde-nous Dieu tout-puissant, de garder la Pâques de ton Fils présente dans toute notre vie. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Act 1, 15-17.20-26
En ces jours-là, Pierre se leva au milieu des frères qui étaient réunis au nombre d’environ cent vingt personnes, et il déclara : « Frères, il fallait que l’Écriture s’accomplisse. En effet, par la bouche de David, l’Esprit Saint avait d’avance parlé de Judas, qui en est venu à servir de guide aux gens qui ont arrêté Jésus: ce Judas était l’un de nous et avait reçu sa part de notre ministère. Il est écrit au livre des Psaumes: Que son domaine devienne un désert, et que personne n’y habite, et encore: Qu’un autre prenne sa charge. Or, il y a des hommes qui nous ont accompagnés durant tout le temps où le Seigneur Jésus a vécu parmi nous, depuis le commencement, lors du baptême donné par Jean, jusqu’au jour où il fut enlevé d’auprès de nous. Il faut donc que l’un d’entre eux devienne, avec nous, témoin de sa résurrection. » On en présenta deux : Joseph appelé Barsabbas, puis surnommé Justus, et Matthias. Ensuite, on fit cette prière : « Toi, Seigneur, qui connais tous les cœurs, désigne lequel des deux tu as choisi pour qu’il prenne, dans le ministère apostolique, la place que Judas a désertée en allant à la place qui est désormais la sienne. » On tira au sort entre eux, et le sort tomba sur Matthias, qui fut donc associé par suffrage aux onze Apôtres.

Louez, serviteurs du Seigneur, louez le nom du Seigneur ! Béni soit le nom du Seigneur, maintenant et pour les siècles des siècles !
Du levant au couchant du soleil, loué soit le nom du Seigneur! Le Seigneur domine tous les peuples, sa gloire domine les cieux.
Qui est semblable au Seigneur notre Dieu ? Lui, il siège là-haut. Mais il abaisse son regard vers le ciel et vers la terre.
De la poussière il relève le faible, il retire le pauvre de la cendre pour qu’il siège parmi les princes, parmi les princes de son peuple.

Évangile : Jean 15, 9-17
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Comme le Père m’a aimé, moi aussi je vous ai aimés. Demeurez dans mon amour. Si vous gardez mes commandements, vous demeurerez dans mon amour, comme moi, j’ai gardé les commandements de mon Père, et je demeure dans son amour. Je vous ai dit cela pour que ma joie soit en vous, et que votre joie soit parfaite. Mon commandement, le voici : Aimez-vous les uns les autres comme je vous ai aimés. Il n’y a pas de plus grand amour que de donner sa vie pour ceux qu’on aime. Vous êtes mes amis si vous faites ce que je vous commande. Je ne vous appelle plus serviteurs, car le serviteur ne sait pas ce que fait son maître ; je vous appelle mes amis, car tout ce que j’ai entendu de mon Père, je vous l’ai fait connaître. Ce n’est pas vous qui m’avez choisi, c’est moi qui vous ai choisis et établis afin que vous alliez, que vous portiez du fruit, et que votre fruit demeure. Alors, tout ce que vous demanderez au Père en mon nom, il vous le donnera. Voici ce que je vous commande : c’est de vous aimer les uns les autres. »

Méditation
Dans l’évangile Jésus nous rappelle que pour être heureux nous devons nous aimer les uns les autres. Vivre ainsi dans l’amour nous fait pénétrer dans le mystère de la sainte trinité où Dieu vit dans une parfaite union d’amour. Et lorsqu’on est proche de Dieu par le vécu de l’amour, tout ce que l’on demande au père il nous l’accorde. Toute la vie chrétienne repose sur cette espérance : recevoir tout ce que l’on demande.

O God, who assigned Saint Matthias a place in the college of Apostles, grant us, through his intercession, that, rejoicing at how your love has been allotted to us, we may merit to be numbered among the elect. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 1:15-17,20-26
One day Peter stood up to speak to the brothers – there were about a hundred and twenty persons in the congregation: ‘Brothers, the passage of scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit, speaking through David, foretells the fate of Judas, who offered himself as a guide to the men who arrested Jesus – after having been one of our number and actually sharing this ministry of ours. Now in the Book of Psalms it says: Let someone else take his office. ‘We must therefore choose someone who has been with us the whole time that the Lord Jesus was travelling round with us, someone who was with us right from the time when John was baptising until the day when he was taken up from us – and he can act with us as a witness to his resurrection.’ Having nominated two candidates, Joseph known as Barsabbas, whose surname was Justus, and Matthias, they prayed, ‘Lord, you can read everyone’s heart; show us therefore which of these two you have chosen to take over this ministry and apostolate, which Judas abandoned to go to his proper place.’ They then drew lots for them, and as the lot fell to Matthias, he was listed as one of the twelve apostles.

Meditation
People often talk about their best friends, and a defining feature of such relationships is that friends share almost everything together. Best friends rarely keep secrets from each other. In the gospel passage, Jesus goes a step further by calling His disciples friends and clarifying that this designation is because He has revealed to them all that He has learnt from His Father. Jesus invites us to become His friends. How do we react to this invitation? To be a friend of Christ is to love Him and our neighbour. Let us seek the grace to renew our friendship with Christ on a daily basis.

1ère lecture : Ac 11, 19-26
En ces jours-là, les frères dispersés par la tourmente qui se produisit lors de l’affaire d’Étienne allèrent jusqu’en Phénicie, puis à Chypre et Antioche, sans annoncer la Parole à personne d’autre qu’aux Juifs. Parmi eux, il y en avait qui étaient originaires de Chypre et de Cyrène, et qui, en arrivant à Antioche, s’adressaient aussi aux gens de langue grecque pour leur annoncer la Bonne Nouvelle : Jésus est le Seigneur. La main du Seigneur était avec eux : un grand nombre de gens devinrent croyants et se tournèrent vers le Seigneur. La nouvelle parvint aux oreilles de l’Église de Jérusalem, et l’on envoya Barnabé jusqu’à Antioche. À son arrivée, voyant la grâce de Dieu à l’œuvre, il fut dans la joie. Il les exhortait tous à rester d’un cœur ferme attachés au Seigneur. C’était en effet un homme de bien, rempli d’Esprit Saint et de foi. Une foule considérable s’attacha au Seigneur. Barnabé partit alors à Tarse chercher Saul. L’ayant trouvé, il l’amena à Antioche. Pendant toute une année, ils participèrent aux assemblées de l’Église, ils instruisirent une foule considérable. Et c’est à Antioche que, pour la première fois, les disciples reçurent le nom de « chrétiens ».

On célébrait la fête de la dédicace du Temple à Jérusalem. C’était l’hiver. Jésus allait et venait dans le Temple, sous la colonnade de Salomon. Les Juifs firent cercle autour de lui ; ils lui disaient : « Combien de temps vas- tu nous tenir en haleine ? Si c’est toi le Christ, dis-le-nous ouvertement ! » Jésus leur répondit : « Je vous l’ai dit, et vous ne croyez pas. Les œuvres que je fais, moi, au nom de mon Père, voilà ce qui me rend témoignage. Mais vous, vous ne croyez pas, parce que vous n’êtes pas de mes brebis. Mes brebis écoutent ma voix ; moi, je les connais, et elles me suivent. Je leur donne la vie éternelle : jamais elles ne périront, et personne ne les arrachera de ma main. Mon Père, qui me les a données, est plus grand que tout, et personne ne peut les arracher de la main du Père. Le Père et moi, nous sommes UN. »

Méditation
«Les œuvres que je fais, moi, au nom de mon Père, voilà ce qui me rend témoignage». A la suite de Jésus, le témoignage chrétien doit être soutenu par des œuvres de bonté. Les juifs restent perplexes sur l’identité réelle de Jésus comme certaines personnes autour de nous s’étonnent lorsqu’on dit être chrétien alors que nos actes le contredisent parfois. Plutôt que nos paroles ce sont nos actions qui doivent montrer que nous appartenons au Christ.

First reading : Acts 11:19-26
Those who had escaped during the persecution that happened because of Stephen travelled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, but they usually proclaimed the message only to Jews. Some of them, however, who came from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch where they started preaching to the Greeks, proclaiming the Good News of the Lord Jesus to them as well. The Lord helped them, and a great number believed and were converted to the Lord. The Church in Jerusalem heard about this and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. There he could see for himself that God had given grace, and this pleased him, and he urged them all to remain faithful to the Lord with heartfelt devotion; for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith. And a large number of people were won over to the Lord. Barnabas then left for Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him he brought him to Antioch. As things turned out they were to live together in that Church a whole year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the disciples were first called ‘Christians.’

The Jews gathered round him and said, ‘How much longer are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.’ Jesus replied: ‘I have told you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name are my witness; but you do not believe, because you are no sheep of mine. The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me. Meditation Our faith in Jesus Christ plays a pivotal role in determining the nature of our discipleship. Jesus makes this point clear when He tells the people, “You do not believe because you are not my sheep.” To be a true disciple of Christ, to be part of His sheepfold, you must first of all believe in Him. How can we claim to belong to Him if we do not believe in His Word? The Word of God becomes the masterpiece in the life of every Christian. It begs the question: What is my relationship with this Word? Do I show that I am a true follower of Christ, a true sheep of His flock, by living in accordance with the Gospel?

1ère lecture : Act 11, 1-18
En ces jours-là, les Apôtres et les frères qui étaient en Judée avaient appris que les nations, elles aussi, avaient reçu la parole de Dieu. Lorsque Pierre fut de retour à Jérusalem, ceux qui étaient juifs d’origine le prirent à partie, en disant: « Tu es entré chez des hommes qui ne sont pas circoncis, et tu as mangé avec eux ! » Alors Pierre reprit l’affaire depuis le commencement et leur exposa tout dans l’ordre, en disant : « J’étais dans la ville de Jaffa, en train de prier, et voici la vision que j’ai eue dans une extase: c’était un objet qui descendait. On aurait dit une grande toile tenue aux quatre coins ; venant du ciel, elle se posa près de moi. Fixant les yeux sur elle, je l’examinais je vis les quadrupèdes de la terre, les bêtes sauvages, les reptiles et les oiseaux du ciel. J’entendis une voix qui me disait : “Debout, Pierre, offre-les en sacrifice, et mange !”Je répondis : “Certainement pas, Seigneur ! Jamais aucun aliment interdit ou impur n’est entré dans ma bouche. Une deuxième fois, du haut du ciel la voix répondit : “Ce que Dieu a déclaré pur, toi, ne le déclare pas interdit. ” Cela se produisit par trois fois, puis tout fut remonté au ciel. Et voici qu’à l’instant même, devant la maison où j’étais, survinrent trois hommes qui m’étaient envoyés de Césarée. L’Esprit me dit d’aller avec eux sans hésiter. Les six frères qui sont ici m’ont accompagné, et nous sommes entrés chez le centurion Corneille. Il nous raconta comment il avait vu l’ange se tenir dans sa maison et dire : “Envoie quelqu’un à Jaffa pour chercher Simon surnommé Pierre. Celui-ci t’adressera des paroles par lesquelles tu seras sauvé, toi et toute ta maison. Au moment où je prenais la parole, l’Esprit Saint descendit sur ceux qui étaient là, comme il était descendu sur nous au commencement. Alors je me suis rappelé la parole que le Seigneur avait dite : “Jean a baptisé avec l’eau, mais vous, c’est dans l’Esprit Saint que vous serez baptisés. ”Et si Dieu leur a fait le même don qu’à nous, parce qu’ils ont cru au Seigneur Jésus Christ, qui étais-je, moi, pour empêcher l’action de Dieu ? » En entendant ces paroles, ils se calmèrent et ils rendirent gloire à Dieu, en disant : « Ainsi donc, même aux nations, Dieu a donné la conversion qui fait entrer dans la vie ! »

Ce berger n’est qu’un mercenaire, et les brebis ne comptent pas vraiment pour lui. Moi, je suis le bon pasteur ; je connais mes brebis, et mes brebis me connaissent, comme le Père me connaît, et que je connais le Père ; et je donne ma vie pour mes brebis. J’ai encore d’autres brebis, qui ne sont pas de cet enclos : celles-là aussi, il faut que je les conduise. Elles écouteront ma voix : il y aura un seul troupeau et un seul pasteur. Voici pourquoi le Père m’aime : parce que je donne ma vie, pour la recevoir de nouveau. Nul ne peut me l’enlever : je la donne de moi-même. J’ai le pouvoir de la donner, j’ai aussi le pouvoir de la recevoir de nouveau : voilà le commandement que j’ai reçu de mon Père. »

Méditation
L’expérience de l’apôtre Pierre chez le centurion Corneille nous rappelle que l’œuvre du Salut entreprise par Dieu concerne tous les hommes. La Bonne Nouvelle du salut peut donc être annoncée chez tous les peuples. les paroles de Jésus affirment bien cette exigence d’ouverture: « J’ai encore d’autres brebis, qui ne sont pas de cet enclos : celles-là aussi, il faut que je les conduise».

Nereus and Achilleus are two soldiers that suffered martyrdom under the persecution of Diocletian. Two basilicas in Rome are dedicated to their memory. They are remembered for their strength in faith even under persection.

First reading : Acts 11:1-18
The apostles and the brothers in Judaea heard that the pagans too had accepted the word of God, and when Peter came up to Jerusalem the Jews criticised him and said, ‘So you have been visiting the uncircumcised and eating with them, have you?’ Peter in reply gave them the details point by point: ‘One day, when I was in the town of Jaffa,’ he began ‘I fell into a trance as I was praying and had a vision of something like a big sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners. This sheet reached the ground quite close to me. I watched it intently and saw all sorts of animals and wild beasts – everything possible that could walk, crawl or fly. Then I heard a voice that said to me, “Now, Peter; kill and eat!” But I answered: Certainly not, Lord; nothing profane or unclean has ever crossed my lips. And a second time the voice spoke from heaven, “What God has made clean, you have no right to call profane.” This was repeated three times, before the whole of it was drawn up to heaven again. ‘Just at that moment, three men stopped outside the house where we were staying; they had been sent from Caesarea to fetch me, and the Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going back with them. The six brothers here came with me as well, and we entered the man’s house. He told us he had seen an angel standing in his house who said, “Send to Jaffa and fetch Simon known as Peter; he has a message for you that will save you and your entire household.” ‘I had scarcely begun to speak when the Holy Spirit came down on them in the same way as it came on us at the beginning, and I remembered that the Lord had said, “John baptised with water, but you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” I realised then that God was giving them the identical thing he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ; and who was I to stand in God’s way?’ This account satisfied them, and they gave glory to God. ‘God’ they said ‘can evidently grant even the pagans the repentance that leads to life.’

When he has brought out his flock, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow because they know his voice. They never follow a stranger but run away from him: they do not recognise the voice of strangers.’ Jesus told them this parable but they failed to understand what he meant by telling it to them. So Jesus spoke to them again: ‘I tell you most solemnly, I am the gate of the sheepfold. All others who have come are thieves and brigands; but the sheep took no notice of them. I am the gate. Anyone who enters through me will be safe: he will go freely in and out and be sure of finding pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full.’

Look with kindness upon your people, O Lord, and grant, we pray, that those you were pleased to renew by eternal mysteries may attain in their flesh the incorruptible glory of the resurrection. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Today, Christ reminds us that He is the Gate. This perfectly rhymes with John 14:6 where He openly declares: “I am the way and the truth and the life”. It logically follows that life exists only in Christ Jesus. In other words, Jesus is the only way that leads to eternal life. As Christians, we are also called to be gateways that guide others toward eternal life. Unfortunately, our actions may at times lead people away from Christ and the Church. We must ask ourselves the question: Who resides in me? Is it the one who points out the gate to everlasting life, or the one who comes to kill, steal, and destroy? Let us seek the grace to be signposts, illuminating the path to heaven through our way of life.
