She was born in 1632 in France. She entered the Augustinian Hospitaller Sisters of the Mercy of Jesus in 1644. She spent her life ministering to the poor and sick in Quebec, and died there at the age of 36.

Almighty ever-living God, let us feel your compassion more readily during these days when, by your gift, we have known it more fully, so that those you have freed from the darkness of error may cling more firmly to the teachings of your truth. First reading : Acts 8:26-40
The angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, ‘Be ready to set out at noon along the road that goes from Jerusalem down to Gaza, the desert road.’ So he set off on his journey. Now it happened that an Ethiopian had been on pilgrimage to Jerusalem; he was a eunuch and an officer at the court of the kandake, or Queen of Ethiopia, and was in fact her chief treasurer. He was now on his way home; and as he sat in his chariot he was reading the prophet Isaiah. The Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go up and meet that chariot.’ When Philip ran up, he heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ ‘How can I’ he replied ‘unless I have someone to guide me?’ So he invited Philip to get in and sit by his side. Now the passage of Scripture he was reading was this: Like a sheep that is led to the slaughter-house, like a lamb that is dumb in front of its shearers, like these he never opens his mouth. He has been humiliated and has no one to defend him. Who will ever talk about his descendants, since his life on earth has been cut short! The eunuch turned to Philip and said, ‘Tell me, is the prophet referring to himself or someone else?’ Starting, therefore, with this text of Scripture Philip proceeded to explain the Good News of Jesus to him. Further along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, ‘Look, there is some water here; is there anything to stop me being baptised?’ He ordered the chariot to stop, then Philip and the eunuch both went down into the water and Philip baptised him. But after they had come up out of the water again Philip was taken away by the Spirit of the Lord, and the eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing. Philip found that he had reached Azotus and continued his journey proclaiming the Good News in every town as far as Caesarea.

Meditation
For the past few days, our readings have been taken from chapter 6 of Saint John’s gospel, which dwells deeply on the concept of the bread of life. This bread, symoblising Christ’s own body and offering of eternal life to those who receive it, is Christ himself. Where can we find such bread? In the Holy Mass, Christ makes himself sacramentally present under the visible signs of bread and wine. According to the teachings of the Church, after the prayer of the consecration uttered by a validly ordained priest, the bread becomes the body of Christ, and the wine becomes His blood. This transformation is known as “transubstantiation”. (see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 1376). When I receive Holy Communion, do I truly believe that I am receiving Christ?
He was born in Yorkshire. He was celebrated for his scholarship as well as for his virtues. He was canonized in 1037, and his feast is celebrated annually on 7 May.

First reading : Acts 8:1-8
That day a bitter persecution started against the Church in Jerusalem, and everyone except the apostles fled to the country districts of Judaea and Samaria. There were some devout people, however, who buried Stephen and made great mourning for him. Saul then worked for the total destruction of the Church; he went from house to house arresting both men and women and sending them to prison. Those who had escaped went from place to place preaching the Good News. One of them was Philip who went to a Samaritan town and proclaimed the Christ to them. The people united in welcoming the message Philip preached, either because they had heard of the miracles he worked or because they saw them for themselves. There were, for example, unclean spirits that came shrieking out of many who were possessed, and several paralytics and cripples were cured. As a result there was great rejoicing in that town.

Meditation
The pursuit of eternal life is a fundamental concern for humanity. Whether through discoveries, scientific progress, or technological innovations, the desire for a longer and improved life remains a driving force, whether consciously or unconsciously. However, it is imperative for God’s children to always remember that Jesus remains the ultimate answer to their quest for eternal life. He alone can provide true satisfaction which, however, comes with one condition: belief in Christ Jesus. Let us earnestly seek His grace and wholeheartedly believe in Him, for it is written, “Whoever sees the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life.”

1ère lecture : Ac 8, 1b- 8
Le jour de la mort d’Étienne, éclata une violente persécution contre l’Église de Jérusalem. Tous se dispersèrent dans les campagnes de Judée et de Samarie, à l’exception des Apôtres. Des hommes religieux ensevelirent Étienne et célébrèrent pour lui un grand deuil. Quant à Saul, il ravageait l’Église, il pénétrait dans les maisons, pour en arracher hommes et femmes, et les jeter en prison. Ceux qui s’étaient dispersés annonçaient la Bonne Nouvelle de la Parole là où ils passaient. C’est ainsi que Philippe, l’un des Sept, arriva dans une ville de Samarie, et là il proclamait le Christ. Les foules, d’un même cœur, s’attachaient à ce que disait Philippe, car elles entendaient parler des signes qu’il accomplissait, ou même les voyaient. Beaucoup de possédés étaient délivrés des esprits impurs, qui sortaient en poussant de grands cris. Beaucoup de paralysés et de boiteux furent guéris. Et il y eut dans cette ville une grande joie.

Méditation
La kénose, l’abaissement de Jésus le conduit à se conformer à la volonté de son père : « je suis descendu du ciel pour faire non pas ma volonté, mais la volonté de Celui qui m’a envoyé ». La pratique de la vie chrétienne ne devrait pas être autre chose que de s’engager à faire en tout et pour tout, la volonté de Dieu.

Meditation
A child asks his mother: “Mama, when are we going to church next? Is it tomorrow”? When the mother questions him further, the young boy reveals that he wants to go back to church because the priest gave him candies last week. Jesus’ contemporaries echo a similar sentiment, saying, ‘Give us that bread always.’ Their sole desire is for bread, the material sustenance, rather than grasping the depth of His teachings. In the same vein, we, self-proclaimed Christians, may find ourselves following Christ for varied reasons. Scripture reveals that true Christian identity is rooted in faith in Christ. It prompts us to question our internal motivations for going to church. Am I merely going to church as a formality, or do I genuinely believe in Jesus Christ, the bread of life?

1ère lecture : Ac 7, 51 – 8,1a
En ces jours-là, Étienne disait au peuple, aux anciens et aux scribes : « Vous qui avez la nuque raide, vous dont le cœur et les oreilles sont fermés à l’Alliance, depuis toujours vous résistez à l’Esprit Saint ; vous êtes bien comme vos pères !
Y a-t-il un prophète que vos pères n’aient pas persécuté ? Ils ont même tué ceux qui annonçaient d’avance la venue du Juste, celui-là que maintenant vous venez de livrer et d’assassiner. Vous qui aviez reçu la loi sur ordre des anges, vous ne l’avez pas observée. » Ceux qui écoutaient ce discours avaient le cœur exaspéré et grinçaient des dents contre Étienne. Mais lui, rempli de l’Esprit Saint, fixait le ciel du regard : il vit la gloire de Dieu, et Jésus debout à la droite de Dieu. Il déclara : « Voici que je contemple les cieux ouverts et le Fils de l’homme debout à la droite de Dieu. » Alors ils poussèrent de grands cris et se bouchèrent les oreilles. Tous ensemble, ils se précipitèrent sur lui, l’entraînèrent hors de la ville et se mirent à le lapider. Les témoins avaient déposé leurs vêtements aux pieds d’un jeune homme appelé Saul. Étienne, pendant qu’on le lapidait, priait ainsi : « Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon esprit. » Puis, se mettant à genoux, il s’écria d’une voix forte : « Seigneur, ne leur compte pas ce péché. » Et, après cette parole, il s’endormit dans la mort. Quant à Saul, il approuvait ce meurtre.

« Amen, amen, je vous le dis : ce n’est pas Moïse qui vous a donné le pain venu du ciel ; c’est mon Père qui vous donne le vrai pain venu du ciel. Car le pain de Dieu, c’est celui qui descend du ciel et qui donne la vie au monde. » Ils lui dirent alors : « Seigneur, donne-nous toujours de ce pain-là. » Jésus leur répondit : « Moi, je suis le pain de la vie. Celui qui vient à moi n’aura jamais faim ; celui qui croit en moi n’aura jamais soif. »

Que nos prières montent vers toi, Seigneur, avec ces offrandes pour le sacrifice ; dans ta bonté purifie-nous, et nous correspondrons davantage au sacrement de ton amour. Par Jésus.

Dieu tout-puissant, dans la résurrection du Christ, tu nous recrées pour la vie éternelle ; multiplie en nous les fruits du sacrement pascal : fais-nous prendre des forces neuves à cette nourriture qui apporte le salut. Par Jésus.
Méditation
« En tes mains Seigneur je remets mon esprit ». Face à la persécution, Etienne s’abandonne au Seigneur dont il contemple la gloire dans les cieux. Confier son sort à l’éternel c’est donc opter pour un choix décisif : celui de trouver tout bien et toute vie en lui. Puisque Jésus se présente comme le pain de la vie, n’ayons pas peur de remettre en ses mains tous les aspects de notre existence ; il nous ouvrira les portes du ciel.
Le Père Rémy II Messanga Beyala, missionnaire claretain originaire du Cameroun, a quitté cette terre le 29 avril 2025 à Muret, en France, à l’âge de 52 ans. Né en 1973, il a voué sa vie au service de Dieu et de ses frères, en répondant à l’appel missionnaire avec foi, dévouement et humilité.
Envoyé en mission universelle en France, il exerçait son ministère à Muret, où il s’était pleinement investi dans la vie pastorale, portant avec lui la chaleur et la richesse de son expérience spirituelle. Apprécié pour sa sagesse, sa proximité avec les fidèles et son engagement sans réserve, il laisse derrière lui le souvenir d’un prêtre profondément humain et totalement donné à la mission.
Ce lundi 5 mai, il a été inhumé en France dans une atmosphère de recueillement et de prière. Simultanément, au Cameroun, les missionnaires claretains ont tenu à lui rendre un vibrant hommage au cours d’une messe d’obsèques célébrée en son honneur à la paroisse Saint Charles Lwanga de Nkolbisson. ladite célébration a été presidée par le TRP Jude Thaddeus Langeh, Cmf, Supérieur Majeur de la Délégation Indépendante du Cameroun. Famille biologique, amis proches, fidèles paroissiens et connaissances, nombreux sont ceux qui ont fait le déplacement pour dire adieu à celui qui, un jour, avait répondu « me voici » à l’appel du Seigneur.
Ce moment de communion entre la France et le Cameroun, entre la terre de mission et la terre d’origine, reflète bien la dimension universelle de la vocation du Père Rémy II Messanga Beyala. Sa vie, comme son départ, unit les cœurs dans la prière, la gratitude et l’espérance.
Puisse son exemple continuer d’inspirer les générations de missionnaires à venir. Que le Seigneur, qu’il a fidèlement servi, l’accueille dans sa paix et sa lumière.

First reading : Acts 6:8-15
Stephen was filled with grace and power and began to work miracles and great signs among the people. But then certain people came forward to debate with Stephen, some from Cyrene and Alexandria who were members of the synagogue called the Synagogue of Freedmen, and others from Cilicia and Asia. They found they could not get the better of him because of his wisdom, and because it was the Spirit that prompted what he said. So they procured some men to say, ‘We heard him using blasphemous language against Moses and against God.’ Having in this way turned the people against him as well as the elders and Scribes, they took Stephen by surprise, and arrested him and brought him before the Sanhedrin. There they put up false witnesses to say, ‘This man is always making speeches against this Holy Place and the Law. We have heard him say that Jesus the Nazarene is going to destroy this Place and alter the traditions that Moses handed down to us.’ The members of the Sanhedrin all looked intently at Stephen, and his face appeared to them like the face of an angel.

Meditation
“Do not work for food that cannot last, but work for food that endures to eternal life”. One of the main problems our world faces today is food scarcity. The number of people who lack food daily continues to rise in our societies. Even in Jesus’ time, food shortages were prevalent, prompting people to voluntarily follow someone who could provide them with some bread to eat. Jesus uses the miracle of the loaves to capture their attention and guide them toward a deeper reality. Today, He invites us to seek lasting food. However, we cannot ignore the pressing reality of the need for material food. Similar to Jesus, we are called to work to alleviate the food crisis in our society. As a Christian, how do I contribute to mitigating the wave of hunger in my society?

1ère lecture : Ac 6, 8-15
En ces jours-là, Étienne, rempli de la grâce et de la puissance de Dieu, accomplissait parmi le peuple des prodiges et des signes éclatants. Intervinrent alors certaines gens de la synagogue dite des Affranchis, ainsi que des Cyrénéens et des Alexandrins, et aussi des gens originaires de Cilicie et de la province d’Asie. Ils se mirent à discuter avec Étienne, mais sans pouvoir résister à la sagesse et à l’Esprit qui le faisaient parler. Alors ils soudoyèrent des hommes pour qu’ils disent : « Nous l’avons entendu prononcer des paroles blasphématoires contre Moïse et contre Dieu. » Ils ameutèrent le peuple, les anciens et les scribes, et, s’étant saisis d’Étienne à l’improviste, ils l’amenèrent devant le Conseil suprême. Ils produisirent de faux témoins, qui disaient : « Cet individu ne cesse de proférer des paroles contre le Lieu saint et contre la Loi. Nous l’avons entendu affirmer que ce Jésus, le Nazaréen, détruirait le Lieu saint et changerait les coutumes que Moïse nous a transmises. » Tous ceux qui siégeaient au Conseil suprême avaient les yeux fixés sur Étienne, et ils virent que son visage était comme celui d’un ange.

Lorsque des grands accusent ton serviteur, je médite sur tes ordres. Je trouve mon plaisir en tes exigences : ce sont elles qui me conseillent.
J’énumère mes voies : tu me réponds ; apprends-moi tes commandements. Montre- moi la voie de tes préceptes, que je médite sur tes merveilles.
Détourne-moi de la voie du mensonge, fais-moi la grâce de ta loi. J’ai choisi la voie de la fidélité, je m’ajuste à tes décisions.

Evangile : Jn 6, 22-29
Jésus avait rassasié cinq mille hommes, et ses disciples l’avaient vu marcher sur la mer. Le lendemain, la foule restée sur l’autre rive se rendit compte qu’il n’y avait eu là qu’une seule barque, et que Jésus n’y était pas monté avec ses disciples, qui étaient partis sans lui. Cependant, d’autres barques, venant de Tibériade, étaient arrivées près de l’endroit où l’on avait mangé le pain après que le Seigneur eut rendu grâce. Quand la foule vit que Jésus n’était pas là, ni ses disciples, les gens montèrent dans les barques et se dirigèrent vers Capharnaüm à la recherche de Jésus. L’ayant trouvé sur l’autre rive, ils lui dirent : « Rabbi, quand es-tu arrivé ici ? » Jésus leur répondit : « Amen, amen, je vous le dis : vous me cherchez, non parce que vous avez vu des signes, mais parce que vous avez mangé de ces pains et que vous avez été rassasiés. Travaillez non pas pour la nourriture qui se perd, mais pour la nourriture qui demeure jusque dans la vie éternelle, celle que vous donnera le Fils de l’homme, lui que Dieu, le Père, a marqué de son sceau. » Ils lui dirent alors : « Que devons-nous faire pour travailler aux œuvres de Dieu ? » Jésus leur répondit: « L’œuvre de Dieu, c’est que vous croyiez en celui qu’il a envoyé. »

Méditation
Les miracles opérés par Jésus ont pour seul et unique but de faire naître la foi : croire en l’envoyé de Dieu. C’est cela l’œuvre de Dieu, nous faire croire lui. Notre recherche de Dieu doit donc poursuivre le but de nous ouvrir à la vraie foi. Au-delà de toit autre chose matérielle dont notre vie a besoin, nous devons chercher Dieu pour l’unique chose nécessaire pour notre Salut : sa présence à nos côtés qui est porteuse de réconfort.
Le quatrième évangile nous fait connaître Philippe : il était de Bethsaïde, comme Pierre et André; comme eux, il fut un des premiers que Jésus ait appelés à le suivre, avant même le début de la prédication en Galilée. A Jérusalem, peu avant la passion, c’est à Philippe que des Grecs s’adressent pour être introduits auprès de Jésus.

1ère lecture : Act 5, 27b-32.40b-41
En ces jours-là, les Apôtres comparaissaient devant le Conseil suprême. Le grand prêtre les interrogea: «Nous vous avions formellement interdit d’enseigner au nom de celui-là, et voilà que vous remplissez Jérusalem de votre enseignement. Vous voulez donc faire retomber sur nous le sang de cet homme!» En réponse, Pierre et les Apôtres déclarèrent: «Il faut obéir à Dieu plutôt qu’aux hommes. Le Dieu de nos pères a ressuscité Jésus, que vous aviez exécuté en le suspendant au bois du supplice. C’est lui que Dieu, par sa main droite, a élevé, en faisant de lui le Prince et le Sauveur, pour accorder à Israël la conversion et le pardon des péchés. Quant à nous, nous sommes les témoins de tout cela, avec l’Esprit Saint, que Dieu a donné à ceux qui lui obéissent.» Après avoir fait fouetter les Apôtres, ils leur interdirent de parler au nom de Jésus, puis ils les relâchèrent. Quant à eux, quittant le Conseil suprême, ils repartaient tout joyeux d’avoir été jugés dignes de subir des humiliations pour le nom de Jésus.

Fêtez le Seigneur, vous, ses fidèles, rendez grâce en rappelant son nom très saint. Sa colère ne dure qu’un instant, sa bonté, toute la vie.

2ème lecture : Apocalypse 5, 11-14

Ils disaient d’une voix forte: «Il est digne, l’Agneau immolé, de recevoir puissance et richesse, sagesse et force, honneur, gloire et louange.» Toute créature dans le ciel et sur la terre, sous la terre et sur la mer, et tous les êtres qui s’y trouvent, je les entendis proclamer: «À celui qui siège sur le Trône, et à l’Agneau, la louange et l’honneur, la gloire et la souveraineté pour les siècles des siècles.» Et les quatre Vivants disaient: «Amen!»; et les Anciens, se jetant devant le Trône, se prosternèrent.

Évangile : Jean 21, 1-14
En ce temps-là, Jésus se manifesta encore aux disciples sur le bord de la mer de Tibériade, et voici comment. Il y avait là, ensemble, Simon-Pierre, avec Thomas, appelé Didyme (c’est-à-dire Jumeau), Nathanaël, de Cana de Galilée, les fils de Zébédée, et deux autres de ses disciples. Simon-Pierre leur dit : « Je m’en vais à la pêche.» Ils lui répondent: « Nous aussi, nous allons avec toi. » Ils partirent et montèrent dans la barque ; or, cette nuit-là, ils ne prirent rien. Au lever du jour, Jésus se tenait sur le rivage, mais les disciples ne savaient pas que c’était lui. Jésus leur dit : « Les enfants, auriez-vous quelque chose à manger ? » Ils lui répondirent: « Non. » Il leur dit : « Jetez le filet à droite de la barque, et vous trouverez. » Ils jetèrent donc le filet, et cette fois ils n’arrivaient pas à le tirer, tellement il y avait de poissons. Alors, le disciple que Jésus aimait dit à Pierre: « C’est le Seigneur ! » Quand Simon-Pierre entendit que c’était le Seigneur, il passa un vêtement, car il n’avait rien sur lui, et il se jeta à l’eau. Les autres disciples arrivèrent en barque, traînant le filet plein de poissons ; la terre n’était qu’à une centaine de mètres. Une fois descendus à terre, ils aperçoivent, disposé là, un feu de braise avec du poisson posé dessus, et du pain. Jésus leur dit : « Apportez donc de ces poissons que vous venez de prendre. » Simon-Pierre remonta et tira jusqu’à terre le filet plein de gros poissons : il y en avait cent cinquante-trois. Et, malgré cette quantité, le filet ne s’était pas déchiré. Jésus leur dit alors : « Venez manger. » Aucun des disciples n’osait lui demander: « Qui es-tu ? » Ils savaient que c’était le Seigneur. Jésus s’approche ; il prend le pain et le leur donne ; et de même pour le poisson. C’était la troisième fois que Jésus ressuscité d’entre les morts se manifestait à ses disciples.

Il fallait que s´accomplît ce qui était annoncé par l´Écriture: les souffrances du Messie, sa résurrection des morts le troisième jour, et la conversion proclamée en son nom pour le pardon des péchés, à toutes les nations, alléluia.

Méditation
Jésus ressuscité se révèle à ses disciples et montre que c’est bien lui, par trois signes qui permettent de l’identifier : il reprend le miracle de la pêche miraculeuse ; il mange avec ses disciples et leur distribue le pain et le poisson comme à la dernière cène. C’est donc dans nos actes quotidiens que nous devons reconnaitre la présence de Dieu. Accomplir chacune de mes tâches avec bonté me permet ainsi de vivre avec le Seigneur.
Philip was born at Bethsaida and started as a disciple of John the Baptist. After the Baptist’s death he followed Christ. James, a cousin of the Lord, was the son of Alphaeus. He ruled the Church at Jerusalem; wrote an epistle; led an austere life; and converted many Jews to the Faith. He was crowned with martyrdom in the year 62.

O God, who gladden us each year with the feast day of the Apostles Philip and James, grant us, through their prayers, a share in the Passion and Resurrection of your Only Begotten Son, so that we may merit to behold you for eternity. First reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-8

Purify our minds, we pray, O Lord, by these holy gifts we have received, so that, contemplating you in your Son together with the Apostles Philip and James, we may be worthy to possess eternal life. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
“Lord, let us see the Father!” Philip’s plea reminds us of the psalmist’s cry: “
O God, you are my God; for you, I long. For you, my soul is thirsting. My body pines for you like a dry, weary land without water” (Ps 62). Philip’s entreaty serves as a reminder to us to prioritise what is essential over things that are passing. As Christians and ministers of the Word of God, our primary duty is to seek the face of God and lead others to Him. For this to be possible, we must be firmly rooted in Christ Jesus, the True Way to eternal life. Indeed, without knowing the Way, we cannot seek the Father, approach Him, or guide others to Him. Let us pray and seek the grace to remain fervent with God’s love. It is this fervour that propels us to seek God’s face on a daily basis.
